In consideration of their origin the adaptive strategies of the evergreen species of the Mediterranean maquis were analysed. Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica arborea L., and Erica multiflora L. had the lowest net photosynthetic rate (PN) in the favourable period [7.8±0.6 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], the highest PN decrease (on an average 86 % of the maximum) but the highest recovery capacity (>70 % of the maximum) at the first rainfall in September. Cistus incanus L. and Arbutus unedo L. had the highest PN during the favourable period [15.5±5.2 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], 79 % decrease during drought, and a lower recovery capacity (on an average 54 %). Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia L., and Pistacia lentiscus L. had an intermediate PN in the favourable period [9.2±1.3 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], a lower reduction during drought (on an average 63 %), and a range from 62 % (Q. ilex and P. latifolia) to 39 % (P. lentiscus) of recovery capacity. The Mediterranean species had higher decrease in PN and stomatal conductance during drought and a higher recovery capacity than the pre-Mediterranean species. Among the pre-Mediterranean species, P. latifoliahad the best adaptation to long drought periods also by its higher leaf mass per area (LMA) which lowered leaf temperature thus decreasing transpiration rate during drought. Moreover, its leaf longevity determined a more stable leaf biomass during the year. Among the Mediteranean species, R. officinalis was the best adapted species to short drought periods by its ability to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, R. officinalis had the lowest tolerance to high temperatures by its PN dropping below half its maximum value when leaf temperature was over 33.6°C. R. officinalismay be used as a bioindicator species of global change. This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the page numbers.  相似文献

Climate warming is predicted to amplify drought stress. Thus, it is important to understand how coexisting plant species respond to severe droughts. Here we study how seven Mediterranean woody plant species with different evolutionary history and functional characteristics (Pinus halepensis Mill., Juniperus phoenicea L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Rhamnus lycioides L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Genista scorpius (L.) DC., and Globularia alypum L.) responded to a severe winter drought during 2011–2012 in Spain. The study site is located in the Valcuerna valley, Monegros desert, northeastern Spain. We evaluated how the drought affected the annual growth-ring formation of the species by using dendrochronology and quantified the intensity of drought-induced defoliation and mortality and compared it between species and groups of species with different evolutionary history. Radial growth of all species was strongly reduced by the 2012 drought. The pre-Mediterranean species (P. halepensis, J. phoenicea, P. lentiscus and R. lycioides) reduced growth more than the Mediterranean species (R. officinalis, G. scorpius and G. alypum). Defoliation was significantly higher in pre-Mediterranean than in Mediterranean species. When species were analyzed separately we found that P. halepensis was the species with the highest growth reduction but J. phoenicea was defoliated more severely and showed higher mortality rates as a consequence of drought. In the case of the Mediterranean shrubs, drought-induced mortality was only noticeable in R. officinalis. Drought impacted growth of all species but this did not induce mortality in all of them. Growth reduction was dependent on evolutionary history. However, functional characteristics of the species such as leaf stomatal regulation and root architecture may be more important than evolutionary history on explaining drought-induced mortality. Indeed, species with shallow root systems such as J. phoenicea and R. officinalis were the most adversely affected by the drought.  相似文献

We investigated net photosynthetic rate (PN) of ear and two uppermost (flag and penultimate) leaves of wheat cultivars Hongmangmai (drought resistant) and Haruhikari (drought sensitive) during post-anthesis under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions. The PNof ear and flag leaf were significantly higher and less affected by drought in Hongmangmai than in Haruhikari. The rate of reduction in stomatal conductance (gs) was similar for the two cultivars, but intercellular CO2concentration (Ci) in the flag leaf of Hongmangmai was lower than that of Haruhikari in non-irrigated treatment. No differences were observed in leaf water potential (ψ1) and osmotic adjustment of the flag leaf of the cultivars. These results imply that differences in photosynthetic inhibition on the flag leaf at low leaf ψ1between the cultivars were primarily due to non-stomatal effects. Hence the main physiological factor associated with yield stability of Hongmangmai under drought stress may be attributed to the capacity for chloroplast activity in the flag leaf, which apparently allows sustained PNof flag leaf during grain filling under drought stress. The higher PNof ear in Hongmangmai under drought could also be related to its drought resistance.  相似文献

Salinity is a major problem of many agricultural lands that is usually associated with drought stress in arid and semi-arid regions. In this study we examine the role of salinity stress on temperature requirements of two herbaceous species and how it could be modeled to quantify alterations. We applied four non-linear regression models (segmented, beta, beta modified, and dent-like) to describe the germination rate–temperature relationships of Silybum marinum L. and Calendua officinalis L. over six constant temperatures exposed to different levels of salinity stress. Our results revealed that salinity could affect the cardinal temperatures in both plants and, as a result, it is not possible to suggest one model for all levels of salinity stress. The best model to fit data to predict cardinal temperatures of Silybum marianum and Calendula officinalis at the no-salinity condition were dent-like (AICc?=?4.03) and beta (AICc = ??2.30), respectively. Knowing the thermal time constant (fo) value helps us predict the minimum number of hours required for completion of germination at the optimal temperature. All models in this study were estimated higher fo due to higher salinity stress in both Silybum marianum and Calendula officinalis seeds. The highest estimated fo for Silybum marianum (91.5?±?59.6) and Calendula officinalis (178.9?±?26.5) was obtained from the results of germination rate prediction using a dent-like model at 200 mM salinity.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and stomatal limitation (Ls) were investigated in two Syringa species. The saturation irradiance (SI) was 400 µmol m-2s-1 for S. pinnatifolia and 1 700 µmol m-2s-1 for S. oblata. Compared with S. oblata, S. pinnatifolia had extremely low g s . Unlike S. oblata, the maximal photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in S. pinnatifoliaoccurred around 08:00 and then fell down, indicating this species was sensitive to higher temperature and high photosynthetic photon flux density. However, such phenomenon was interrupted by the leaf development rhythms before summer. A relatively lower PN together with a lower leaf area and shoot growth showed the capacity for carbon assimilation was poorer in S. pinnatifolia.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters including net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water-use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal conductance (gs) were studied in indoor C3 plants Philodendron domesticum (Pd), Dracaena fragans (Df), Peperomia obtussifolia (Po), Chlorophytum comosum (Cc), and in a CAM plant, Sansevieria trifasciata (St), exposed to various low temperatures (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25°C). All studied plants survived up to 0°C, but only St and Cc endured, while other plants wilted, when the temperature increased back to room temperature (25°C). The PN declined rapidly with the decrease of temperature in all studied plants. St showed the maximum PN of 11.9 μmol m?2 s?1 at 25°C followed by Cc, Po, Pd, and Df. E also followed a trend almost similar to that of PN. St showed minimum E (0.1 mmol m?2 s?1) as compared to other studied C3 plants at 25°C. The E decreased up to ≈4-fold at 5 and 0°C. Furthermore, a considerable decline in WUE was observed under cold stress in all C3 plants, while St showed maximum WUE. Similarly, the gs also declined gradually with the decrease in the temperature in all plants. Among C3 plants, Pd and Po showed the maximum gs of 0.07 mol m?2 s?1 at 25°C followed by Df and Cc. However, St showed the minimum gs that further decreased up to ~4-fold at 0°C. In addition, the content of photosynthetic pigments [chlorophyll a, b, (a+b), and carotenoids] was varying in all studied plants at 0°C. Our findings clearly indicated the best photosynthetic potential of St compared to other studied plants. This species might be recommended for improving air quality in high-altitude closed environments.  相似文献

The plasticity response of Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica seedlings to combined nitrogen (N) deposition and drought stress was evaluated, and their performance in natural niche overlaps was predicted. Seedlings in a greenhouse were exposed to four N deposition levels (0, 4, 8, and 20 g N m?2 year?1) and two water levels (80 and 50 % field-water capacity). Plant traits associated with growth, biomass production, leaf physiology, and morphology were determined. Results showed that drought stress inhibited seedling performance, altered leaf morphology, and decreased fluorescence parameters in both species. By contrast increased N supply had beneficial effects on the nutritional status and activity of the PSII complex. The two species showed similar responses to drought stress. Contrary to the effects in Q. mongolica, N deposition promoted leaf N concentration, PSII activity, leaf chlorophyll contents, and final growth of Q. variabilis under well-watered conditions. Thus, Q. variabilis was more sensitive to N deposition than Q. mongolica. However, excessive N supply (20 g N m?2 year?1) did not exert any positive effects on the two species. Among the observed plasticity of the plant traits, plant growth was the most plastic, and leaf morphology was the least plastic. Therefore, drought stress played a primary role at the whole-plant level, but N supply significantly alleviated the adverse effects of drought stress on plant physiology. A critical N deposition load around 20 g N m?2 year?1 may exist for oak seedlings, which may more adversely affect Q. variabilis than Q. mongolica.  相似文献

Shallow ponds with rapidly photosynthesising cyanobacteria or eukaryotic algae are used for growing biotechnology feedstock and have been proposed for biofuel production but a credible model to predict the productivity of a column of phytoplankton in such ponds is lacking. Oxygen electrodes and Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) fluorometer technology were used to measure gross photosynthesis (P G) vs. irradiance (E) curves (P G vs. E curves) in Chlorella (chlorophyta), Dunaliella salina (chlorophyta) and Phaeodactylum (bacillariophyta). P G vs. E curves were fitted to the waiting-in-line function [P G = (P Gmax × E/Eopt) × exp(1 — E/Eopt)]. Attenuation of incident light with depth could then be used to model P G vs. E curves to describe P G vs. depth in pond cultures of uniformly distributed planktonic algae. Respiratory data (by O2-electrode) allowed net photosynthesis (P N) of algal ponds to be modelled with depth. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis at the pond surface reduced P N of the water column. Calculated optimum depths for the algal ponds were: Phaeodactylum, 63 mm; Dunaliella, 71 mm and Chlorella, 87 mm. Irradiance at this depth is ≈ 5 to 10 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). This knowledge can then be used to optimise the pond depth. The total net P N [μmol(O2) m?2 s?1] were: Chlorella, ≈ 12.6 ± 0.76; Dunaliella, ≈ 6.5 ± 0.41; Phaeodactylum ≈ 6.1 ± 0.35. Snell’s and Fresnel’s laws were used to correct irradiance for reflection and refraction and thus estimate the time course of P N over the course of a day taking into account respiration during the day and at night. The optimum P N of a pond adjusted to be of optimal depth (0.1–0.5 m) should be approximately constant because increasing the cell density will proportionally reduce the optimum depth of the pond and vice versa. Net photosynthesis for an optimised pond located at the tropic of Cancer would be [in t(C) ha?1 y?1]: Chlorella, ≈ 14.1 ± 0.66; Dunaliella, ≈ 5.48 ± 0.39; Phaeodactylum, ≈ 6.58 ± 0.42 but such calculations do not take weather, such as cloud cover, and temperature, into account.  相似文献

Dynamics of enterobacteria of normal intestinal microflora was studied in Apis mellifera mellifera L. bees hibernating under snow in the Western Urals. The cell numbers (N) of the predominant species Klebsiella oxytoca increased from 10-106 CFU/bee in November 2004 to 104-107 CFU/bee in March 2005; its frequency of occurrence (P) increased from 92 to 100%. Increase of Providencia rettgeri (11.2004: N up to 106, P 25%; 03.2005: N 102-106, P 80%) was accompanied by the substitution of Morganella morganii (11.2004: N up to 106, P 25%) with Proteus vulgaris (03.2005: N up to 105, P 8%). By spring, Hafnia alvei and Citrobacter sp., which are pathogenic to bees, disappeared (11.2004: N up to 105, P 13 and 10%, respectively). Endophytic species Pantoea agglomerans, Leclecria sp., and other representatives of the “Enterobacter agglomerans” group were present in November and after the first emergence in spring (N up to 105; November: P 15%; April: P 23%). In April, the number of enterobacteria decreased to 105, and P. rettgeri became the predominant species (P 54%) instead of K. oxytoca (P 43%).  相似文献

Four plant species, Elymus mollis Trin., Carex kobomugi Ohwi, Glehnia littoralis F. Schmidt ex Miq., and Vitex rotundifolia L.f., are dominant perennial species in coastal sand dunes of Korea. We examined a physiological adaptation of these species by measurements of diurnal variation in photosynthesis and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and solute patterns in leaves during one season (June), which is favorable for plant growth of all four species. All four species adopted different strategies in order to utilize radiation and to maintain water status under a fluctuating microclimate. Although the lowest water contents among four plant species was found, E. mollis with a high Chl and K+ content showed better photosynthetic performance, with high stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency (CE), and water-use efficiency. Midday depression of P N in E. mollis and G. littoralis, without a reduction of gs, was associated with a reduction in CE and maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, indicating nonstomatal limitation. Photosynthesis depression in both C. kobomugi and V. rotundifolia, with relatively low g s values, could be attributed to both stomatal and nonstomatal limitations. The high storage capacity for inorganic ions in E. molli, C. kobomugi, and G. littoralis may play an efficient role in regulating photosynthesis and maintaining leaf water status through stomatal control, and can also play an important role in osmotic adjustment.  相似文献

Physiological responses to light availability and soil flooding on Lindera melissifolia (Walt.) Blume were studied. Shrubs were grown under 70, 37 or 5% of full sunlight with either 0, 45, or 90 d of soil flooding. We measured leaf photosynthetic rate (PN) to test the hypothesis that soil flooding reduces P N in L. melissifolia following shrub acclimation to low light availability. Results showed that light availability and soil flooding interacted to affect P N. In the 0 d and 45 d flooding regimes (flood water removed 36–39 d prior to measurement), P N was similar between shrubs receiving 70% or 37% light, and these shrubs had 147% greater P N than shrubs receiving 5% light. Shrubs receiving 90 d of soil flooding had similar low rates of area-based P N regardless of light level. Similar P N between 0 d and 45 d flooded shrubs indicated physiological recovery following removal of flood water.  相似文献

Medicago sativa L. cv. Longzhong is a nutritious forage plant in dryland regions of the Loess Plateau with strong drought tolerance and broad adaptability. To understand the adaptation mechanism of alfalfa (M. sativa L. cv. Longzhong) to drought stress, growth, and physiological parameters including levels of chlorophyll content, osmotic adjustment, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants were measured under simulated levels of drought (? 0.40, ? 0.80, ? 1.20, ? 1.60, and ? 2.00 MPa). The changes in M. sativa L. cv. Longzhong were compared with those of plants of M. sativa L. cv. Longdong control (Variety I) suited to moderate rainfall areas and M. sativa L. cv. Gannong No. 3 (Variety II) suited to irrigated areas. The results showed that root–shoot ratio, the chlorophyll (a + b) and osmolytes contents, the degree of lipid peroxidation and ROS production, and the levels of antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants increased significantly with increasing drought stress, whereas plant height, aboveground biomass, chlorophyll a/b ratio, leaf water potential (Ψ1), and relative water content (RWC) decreased in response to drought. The Longzhong variety responded early to beginning drought stress (between 0 and ? 0.4 MPa) compared with the controls. Under drought stress (between ? 0.4 and ? 2.0 MPa), the Longzhong variety had significantly higher belowground biomass, root–shoot ratio, Ψ1, RWC, catalase (CAT) activity and reduced glutathione content than those of Varieties I and II, but hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl free radical (OH·) contents were significantly lower. Step regression analysis showed that OH·, CAT, malondialdehyde, superoxide anion-free radical (O 2 ·? ), and superoxide dismutase of Longzhong had the most marked response to drought stress. In conclusion, the stronger drought tolerance of the Longzhong variety might be due to its higher water-holding capacity, root–shoot ratio, and ability to coordinate enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, which coordinate the peroxidation and oxidative systems.  相似文献

In this study, we have compared the photosynthetic characteristics of two contrasting species of Tradescantia plants, T. fluminensis (shade-tolerant species), and T. sillamontana (light-resistant species), grown under the low light (LL, 50–125 µmol photons m?2 s?1) or high light (HL, 875–1000 µmol photons m?2 s?1) conditions during their entire growth period. For monitoring the functional state of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), we measured chlorophyll (Chl) a emission fluorescence spectra and kinetics of light-induced changes in the heights of fluorescence peaks at 685 and 740 nm (F 685 and F 740). We also compared the light-induced oxidation of P700 and assayed the composition of carotenoids in Tradescantia leaves grown under the LL and HL conditions. The analyses of slow induction of Chl a fluorescence (SIF) uncovered different traits in the LL- and HL-grown plants of ecologically contrasting Tradescantia species, which may have potential ecophysiological significance with respect to their tolerance to HL stress. The fluorometry and EPR studies of induction events in chloroplasts in situ demonstrated that acclimation of both Tradescantia species to HL conditions promoted faster responses of their PSA as compared to LL-grown plants. Acclimation of both species to HL also caused marked changes in the leaf anatomy and carotenoid composition (an increase in Violaxanthin?+?Antheraxantin?+?Zeaxanthin and Lutein pools), suggesting enhanced photoprotective capacity of the carotenoids in the plants grown in nature under high irradiance. Collectively, the results of the present work suggest that the mechanisms of long-term PSA photoprotection in Tradescantia are based predominantly on the light-induced remodeling of pigment-protein complexes in chloroplasts.  相似文献

The response of effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΔF/Fm’) to temperature was investigated under field conditions (1 950 m a.s.l.) in three alpine plant species with contrasting leaf temperature climates. The in situ temperature response did not follow an optimum curve but under saturating irradiances [PPFD >800 µìmol(photon) m?2s?1] highest ΔF/Fm’ occurred at leaf temperatures below 10°C. This was comparable to the temperature response of antarctic vascular plants. Leaf temperatures between 0 and 15°C were the most frequently (41 to 56%) experienced by the investigated species. At these temperatures, ΔF/Fm’ was highest in all species (data from all irradiation classes included) but the species differed in the temperature at which ΔF/Fm’ dropped below 50% (Soldanella pusilla >20°C, Loiseleuria procumbens >25°C, and Saxifraga paniculata >40°C). The in situ response of ΔF/Fm’ showed significantly higher ΔF/Fm’ values at saturating PPFD for the species growing in full sunlight (S. paniculata and L. procumbens) than for S. pusilla growing under more moderate PPFD. The effect of increasing PPFD on ΔF/Fm’, for a given leaf temperature, was most pronounced in S. pusilla. Despite the broad diurnal leaf temperature amplitude of alpine environments, only in S. paniculata did saturating PPFD occur over a broad range of leaf temperatures (43 K). In the other two species it was half of that (around 20 K). This indicates that the setting of environmental scenarios (leaf temperature×PPFD) in laboratory experiments often likely exceeds the actual environmental demand in the field.  相似文献

To uncover adaptation capacities of two flooding-tolerant plant species, Pterocarya stenoptera (a native species) and Pinus elliottii (an exotic species from southeastern USA), to alternating submergence and drought, we investigated their physiological and growth responses to water stress. Water treatments, including control, continuous flooding (CF), and periodic flooding and drought (PF), were applied to seedlings in order to simulate water level fluctuation in the hydrofluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Results showed that net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance, and intrinsic water-use efficiency of both plant species were negatively affected under CF and PF compared with the corresponding controls. The PN of both species under PF was comparable to that under CF. At the end of the experiment, the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration was not statistically different between water treatments, while that of P. elliottii was significantly higher than that of P. stenoptera. Although P. stenoptera formed lenticels under flooding conditions, P. elliottii seedlings allocated more mass to leaves and increased the relative growth rate of height to enhance the photosynthetic efficiency. Our results illustrated that P. stenoptera and P. elliottii seedlings developed different adaptive strategies in response to flooding, both CF and PF. Therefore, both P. stenoptera and P. elliottii are promising candidates for the vegetation reconstruction of the riparian zones in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region.  相似文献

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) as a precious relict plant is cultivated around the world, and it is also a typical dioecious tree. Drought is a major environmental stress that limits the growth and development of ginkgo. Although many studies have examined the impact of drought on ginkgo, few have investigated gender-related under drought treatment in the species. In our research, we examined comparative morphology, physiology and the ultrastructure of mesophyll cell in male and female ginkgoes to determine which gender shows superior adaptability to drought stress. Two-year-old cutting-propagated male and female ginkgoes suffered to drought treatment. The experiments showed that drought significantly limited growth and development, disrupted photosynthesis, and destoried the antioxidant protection system in both male and female ginkgoes. When the gender differences in the species were compared, females showed better growth, activities of SOD and POD, concentrations of chl t, chl a/b ratio and proline, P n, C i, g s, qP and NPQ under drought, but lower concentrations of H2O2 and O2 ?, and relative electrolyte leakage. In the aspect of cell ultrastructure, female plants showed a slower rate of cell breakdown and chloroplast decomposition under drought stress than males. The results indicate that female plants of ginkgo show superior growth performance and self-protective mechanisms and higher photosynthetic capacity than male plants under drought stress. Thus, we conclude that female individuals of ginkgo possess better adaptability to drought stress than male individuals.  相似文献

Anastatica hierochuntica is an annual desert plant, which was recently shown to have unusually low nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and a high PSII electron transport rate (ETR). In the current study, we examined how these unusual characteristics are related to a lack of CO2 and inhibition of net photosynthetic rate (PN). We compared the photosynthetic and photoprotective response of A. hierochuntica and sunflower (Helianthus annuus), under conditions of photosynthetic inhibition, with either low CO2 or drought. We found that under nonsteady state conditions of low CO2 availability, A. hierochuntica exhibited about half of the NPQ values and almost twice of the ETR values of H. annuus. However, the long-term inhibition of PN under drought caused a similar increase in NPQ and a decrease in ETR in both A. hierochuntica and H. annuus. These results suggest that the unusually low NPQ and high ETR in A. hierochuntica are not directly related to a response to drought conditions.  相似文献

Increase in salinity is predicted to affect plant growth and survival in most arid and semiarid regions worldwide. Mitragyna parvifolia (Roxb.) Korth. is an important medicinal tree species distributed throughout the semiarid regions of India; however, it is facing a threat of its extinction in its natural habitat. We examined the effects of increasing NaCl salinity on two-month-old M. parvifolia seedlings grown in an environment-controlled chamber and exposed to soils of different electrical conductivity (EC) caused by NaCl [0–5 (control), 5–10, 10–15, 15–20, and 20–25 dS m?1)] for 85 days. Seedlings transferred to soil of EC >15 dS m?1 did not survive beyond 1 week. Increase in the Na+ concentration negatively correlated with their height and positively correlated with their water-use efficiency (WUE). However, leaf area, net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate showed varying correlations and an overall decrease in these parameters compared with the control. At EC of 10–15 dS m?1, the seedling height was reduced by 37% and P N was lowered by 50% compared with those of the control. An increase in the Na+/K+ ratio was observed with increasing salinity. The maximum quantum efficiency of PSII significantly decreased with increasing salinity compared with the control. Our results suggest that the increase in salinity reduced the overall performance of the M. parvifolia seedlings. However, the maintenance of WUE and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII might help M. parvifolia to tolerate NaCl salinity of 15 dS m?1.  相似文献

The interactive effects of shade and drought on the morphological and physiological traits of Catalpa bungei plantlets were assessed. Seedling growth, biomass, biomass allocation, leaf morphology, chlorophyll (Chl) content and gas-exchange parameters were measured in plants raised for 3 months under three light levels [80% (HI), 50% (MI), 30% (LI)] and two water levels [moisture (M) and drought (D)]. The results showed that shade greatly decreased growth, biomass, leaf area (LA) and Chl a/b; increased specific leaf area (SLA) and Chl content; and reduced photosynthetic rate (P n). Drought reduced the growth, biomass, LA, SLA, Chl a/b, P n, stomatal conductance (G s), transpiration rate (T r) and intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (C i) and increased the Chl content. Stomatal closure was an early physiological response to water stress. Light, water and their interaction significantly affected plant traits and their bivariate relationships. The phenotypic plasticity index of light (0.47) was much higher than that of water (0.21), indicating that light was the main driver of the variations observed. Under drought stress, growth, biomass, leaf and stem biomass allocation significantly decreased in the HI and MI environments, whereas no significant difference was observed in growth or biomass parameters under the LI condition. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed in P n, G s, or T r under the LI condition under water stress. Our results showed that shade did not alter the negative effects caused by drought stress in MI but did alleviate the negative effects of the LI condition. In summary, the effect of drought on C. bungei plantlets depends on the irradiance conditions.  相似文献

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yields are impacted by overall photosynthetic production. Factors that influence crop photosynthesis are the plants genetic makeup and the environmental conditions. This study investigated cultivar variation in photosynthesis in the field conditions under both ambient and higher temperature. Six diverse cotton cultivars were grown in the field at Stoneville, MS under both an ambient and a high temperature regime during the 2006–2008 growing seasons. Mid-season leaf net photosynthetic rates (PN) and dark-adapted chlorophyll fluorescence variable to maximal ratios (Fv/Fm) were determined on two leaves per plot. Temperature regimes did not have a significant effect on either PN or Fv/Fm. In 2006, however, there was a significant cultivar × temperature interaction for PN caused by PeeDee 3 having a lower PN under the high temperature regime. Other cultivars’ PN were not affected by temperature. FM 800BR cultivar consistently had a higher PN across the years of the study. Despite demonstrating a higher leaf Fv/Fm, ST 5599BR exhibited a lower PN than the other cultivars. Although genetic variability was detected in photosynthesis and heat tolerance, the differences found were probably too small and inconsistent to be useful for a breeding program.  相似文献
