The purpose of this investigation was to predict body density of young and middle-aged women and to determine if the use of a greater variety of variables, particularly those for fat in the bust and hip regions, increases the predictability of body density. Body density determined by the hydrostatic technique (dependent variable) was obtained from 83 volunteer young women and 60 middle-aged women ranging from 18 to 22 and 33 to 50 yr of age, respectively. Independent variables included 8 skinfold, 13 girth, and 7 diameter measures; age; height; weight; and bra and cup sizes. Mean body density for young women was 1.043 g/ml (SD plus or minus 0.014) and percent fat, 24.8 (SD plus or minus 6.4); 1.031 g/ml (SD plus or minus 0.015) and 29.8% (SD plus or minus 6.7) for middle aged subjects. Percent fat was calculated by the formula of Siri. Factor analysis was used to examine the dimensions measured by the independent variables as a function of age. A multiple regression model was used to develop predictions of body density from the independent variables. The best combination of four variables for predicting body density was skinfold thigh, skinfold suprailiac, cup size, skinfold suprailiac, girth waist, and skinfold thigh (R = 0.89) for middle-aged women. The data showed that the highest predictons were found by using combinations of skinfold, girth, and diameter variables; cup size also supported the need for different regression equations for different age groups.  相似文献

In 45 physically active men (ages 35-67 yr) who underwent hydrostatic weighing to determine body composition, multiple regression equations were developed for the prediction of body density (D), lean body weight (LBW), fat body weight (FBW), and % fat using selected anthropometric measurements. The prediction accuracy for these parameters using several previously generated anthropometric regression equations was also determined. With equations developed from the present data a substantially higher correlation was obtained between measured and predicted LBW (r = 0.95) than between measured and predicted D (r = 0.85), FBW (r = 0.88), or % fat (r = 0.84). When previously developed equations were applied to the present sample, correlations between measured and predicted values were considerably lower (4-42%) than in the original studies; this reduction was least in the case of LBW. Analysis of previous data indicated that in selected populations total body weight can account for a relatively large fraction of the variance in LBW. LBW may be estimated quite accurately (r greater than or equal to 0.90) in physically active men with one of several regression equations which include total body weight as an independent variable.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory responses during heat acclimation were compared between nine young (mean age 21.2 yr) and nine middle-aged men (mean age 46.4 yr) who were matched (P greater than 0.05) for body weight, surface area, surface area-to-weight ratio, percent body fat, and maximal aerobic power. After evaluation in a comfortable environment (22 degrees C, 50% relative humidity), the men were heat acclimated by treadmill walking (1.56 m/s, 5% grade) for two 50-min exercise bouts separated by 10 min of rest for 10 consecutive days in a hot dry (49 degrees C ambient temperature, 20% relative humidity) environment. During the first day of heat exposure performance time was 27 min longer (P less than 0.05) for the middle-aged men, whereas final rectal and skin temperatures and heart rate were lower, and final total body sweat loss was higher (P less than 0.05) compared with the young men. These thermoregulatory advantages for the middle-aged men persisted for the first few days of exercise-heat acclimation (P less than 0.05). After acclimation no thermoregulatory or performance time differences were observed between groups (P greater than 0.05). Sweating sensitivity, esophageal temperature at sweating onset, and the sweating onset time did not differ (P greater than 0.05) between groups either pre- or postacclimatization. Plasma osmolality and sodium concentration were slightly lower for the young men both pre- and postacclimatization; however, both groups had a similar percent change in plasma volume from rest to exercise during these tests.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The association between cadmium exposure and bone mineral density (BMD) has not been well studied in young and middle-aged men. This study examined the relationship between the level of blood Cd (BCd) and BMD in a young to middle-aged representative male population while considering renal function. Using data from the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008–2009, 1275 adult men aged 20–64 years were analyzed. BCd was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and renal function was assessed by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with CKD-EPI formula. The risk of lower bone density was increased according to the increase in BCd levels after adjusting for eGFR and covariates, in which a significant interaction between BCd and eGFR existed. Significant negative associations between BCd and BMD were found: beta (p-value) were −0.03 (0.02), −0.04 (0.004) and −0.03 (0.04) in total femur, lumbar spine and femoral neck, respectively, which were limited to the people with eGFR  lower 25%. Although, a causal relationship could not be determined because of a cross-sectional design in the present study, the results suggest low level Cd toxicity to bone via low eGFR and that measures to reduce environmental Cd exposure may be helpful to prevent bone loss in men.  相似文献

Background

The present study analyses changes in body composition over the course of a working week. The purpose of the study is to identify the size of the changes in the observed parameters by means of typical error of measurement (TE) as the initial value for the interpretation of the detected changes in the repeated measurement in diagnostic practice.

Methods

The researched group consisted of 86 males, aged 21.4 ± 1.0 years. All the participants were free of any medical conditions. The measurement of each participant took place over 1 week from Monday till Friday, in the morning hours. Parameters measured: body mass (BM), total body water (TBW), and body fat (BF). The measurement employed two devices using the bioelectric impedance analysis. These devices were the analyzers Tanita BC 418 MA and Nutriguard MS. In order to assess the differences between the average values, the analysis of repeated measurements was used. To assess the material significance, eta squared was used. TE was used to express the size of the changes in the observed parameters.

Results

A statistically significant difference between the average values of the observed parameters was only detected when using the Tanita BC 418 MA analyzer. Based on the post-hoc tests, these differences in the average values were always detected on Monday and Friday. No material significance was proved, however. The highest TE values were also detected in measurements carried out on Monday and Friday. For BM, the value of TE was 0.6 kg, for TBW 1.0–1.1 %, 0.8–0.9 kg, and for BF 1.2–1.6 %, 1.1–1.3 kg depending on the analyzer used.

Conclusions

The results of the present study demonstrate the stability of parameters of body composition throughout a working week, with the provision that standard measuring conditions are fulfilled. For the purpose of diagnostic practice, when interpreting the results of the repeated measurements, it is advisable to take as provable change caused by the observed factors only the ones whose values exceed the value of a weekly TE or the upper limit of the interval of the measurement reliability.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine how the muscularity of the abdomen at the umbilicus level differs between sedentary middle-aged and young men. Magnetic resonance imaging was applied to determine the cross-sectional areas of skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, and interperitoneal tissue in 43 middle-aged (40 58yrs) and 38 young (21-29 yrs) men. The cross-sectional area of the skeletal muscle was analyzed as the sum of those of the rectus abdominis, abdominal oblique, lower back, and iliopsoas skeletal muscle groups. The middle-aged men showed greater waist circumference and whole abdominal cross-sectional area than the young men. In addition, the cross-sectional areas of subcutaneous fat and interperitoneal tissue were greater in the middle-aged men than in the young men. However, the total cross-sectional area of the skeletal muscle was similar between the two groups, although its percentage to the whole abdominal cross-sectional area was higher in the young men compared to the middle-aged men. Among the four skeletal muscle groups analyzed, the percentage of the cross-sectional areas in abdominal oblique muscles to that of total skeletal muscle was higher in the middle-aged men than in the young men and that of the lower back muscles was the reverse. These results were similar even when cross-sectional area data were analyzed using a subsample (33 middle-aged and 23 young men) matched for body height and mass. Thus, the present study indicated that the total muscularity of the abdomen at the umbilicus level was similar between the middle-aged and young men, but the relative distributions of lower back and abdominal oblique muscles varied between the two generations.  相似文献

The correlations of blood pressure to various indices of muscularity and fatness were studied in 183 young healthy men (mean age 19.7, SD 2.1 years). Systolic pressure showed significant positive correlations with body fat percentage, isometric strength of trunk extensors, body mass index, lean body mass, strength of leg extensors, heart rate, and the sum of four skinfolds. Diastolic pressure had significant positive correlations with body mass index, lean body mass, body fat percentage, sum of skinfolds, strength of leg extensors, strength of trunk extensors, and age. A stepwise selective multiple regression analysis for systolic pressure resulted in four significantly correlating variables: body fat percentage (p less than 0.001), heart rate (p less than 0.01), lean body mass (p less than 0.05), and strength of trunk extensors per kg body weight (p less than 0.05). For diastolic pressure the analysis resulted in two explaining variables: body mass index (p less than 0.001) and age (p less than 0.05). In a regression equation with 13 variables the strength of trunk flexors was negatively correlated with diastolic pressure. It is concluded that both fatness and muscularity are factors related to blood pressure in young men. The muscularity effect is more clearly associated with trunk and leg extensor strength.  相似文献
