Retinal projections were experimentally manipulated in a bony fish to reveal conditions under which considerably enlarged ipsilateral projections developed and persisted. Three experimental groups were studied: animals after unilateral enucleation, after unilateral nerve crush, and after enucleation and crush of the remaining optic nerve. At 29 days after unilateral enucleation alone, no enhanced ipsilateral projection had developed. After nerve crush, however, large numbers of retinal fibers regenerated into the ipsilateral tectum. Retrogradely filled, ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells were distributed throughout the entire retina. After 15 days regenerating retinal fibers covered the entire ipsilateral tectum. At later stages the ipsilateral projection showed progressive reduction in coverage of the tectum. Combining enucleation with nerve crush led to an ipsilateral projection that covered the tectum at 28 days and later. In this experimental situation the development of an ipsilateral projection appears to be a two-step process: (1) Fibers are rerouted to the ipsilateral side at the diencephalon, and (2) ipsilateral fibers persist in the tectum only in the absence of a contralateral projection while they appear to be eliminated in the other cases.

We employed voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the responses of the supragranular somatosensory cortex to stimulation of the four paws in urethane-anesthetized rats. We obtained the following main results. (1) Stimulation of the contralateral forepaw evoked VSD responses with greater amplitude and smaller latency than stimulation of the contralateral hindpaw, and ipsilateral VSD responses had a lower amplitude and greater latency than contralateral responses. (2) While the contralateral stimulation initially activated only one focus, the ipsilateral stimulation initially activated two foci: one focus was typically medial to the focus activated by contralateral stimulation and was stereotaxically localized in the motor cortex; the other focus was typically posterior to the focus activated by contralateral stimulation and was stereotaxically localized in the somatosensory cortex. (3) Forepaw and hindpaw somatosensory stimuli activated large areas of the sensorimotor cortex, well beyond the forepaw and hindpaw somatosensory areas of classical somatotopic maps, and forepaw stimuli activated larger cortical areas with greater activation velocity than hindpaw stimuli. (4) Stimulation of the forepaw and hindpaw evoked different cortical activation dynamics: forepaw responses displayed a clear medial directionality, whereas hindpaw responses were much more uniform in all directions. In conclusion, this work offers a complete spatio-temporal map of the supragranular VSD cortical activation in response to stimulation of the paws, showing important somatotopic differences between contralateral and ipsilateral maps as well as differences in the spatio-temporal activation dynamics in response to forepaw and hindpaw stimuli.

The topography of the middle-latency N110 after radial nerve stimulation suggested a generator in SII. To support this hypothesis, we have tried to identify a homologous component in the tibial nerve SEP (somatosensory evoked potential). Evoked potentials following tibial nerve stimulation (motor+sensory threshold) were recorded with 29 electrodes (bandpass 0.5–500 Hz, sampling rate 1000 Hz). For comparison, the median nerve was stimulated at the wrist. Components were identified as peaks in the global field power (GFP). Map series were generated around GFP peaks and amplitudes were measured from electrodes near map maxima. With median nerve stimulation, we recorded a negativity with a maximum in temporal electrode positions and 106±12 ms peak latency (mean±SD), comparable to the N110 following radial nerve stimulation. After tibial nerve stimulation the latency of a component with the same topography was 131±11 ms (N130). Both N110 and N130 were present ipsi- as well as contralaterally. Amplitudes were significantly higher on the contralateral than the ipsilateral scalp for both median (3.1±2.4 μV vs. 1.7±1.6 μV) and tibial nerve (1.9±1.2 μV vs. 0.6+1 μV). The topography of the N130 can be explained by a generator in the vicinity of SII. The latency difference between median and tibial nerve stimulation is related to the longer conduction distance (cf. N20 and P40). The smaller ipsilateral N130 is consistent with the bilateral body representation in SII.

The development of the contra- and ipsilateral cortical potential evoked by electrical sciatic nerve stimulation was studied in 77 male albino rats aged 5 to 45 days. A contralateral response was already recorded, as double negativity, in the youngest animals, while an ipsilateral evoked potential was not reliably present until the 10th day. At this time, however, both responses started with an inconstant positive wave and their shape was practically the same. During subsequent development the responses differed only in respect to their dominant component: in the contralateral response, the N1 wave had the highest amplitude for most of the time, while in the ipsilateral response the delayed N2 wave was the largest component. The latent periods of contralateral responses were somewhat shorter than those of ipsilateral evoked potentials. During development we noticed a phase of abrupt shortening of the latent period, which took place before the 15th day in the contralateral response and before the 20th day in the ipsilateral response. We also found a difference in the fatigability of the responses, which was greater in immature rats than in adult animals; in the ipsilateral evoked potential it approached adult values more slowly. The development of the ipsilateral response is thus delayed compared with the development of the contralateral response.

Distribution maps of cortical potentials evoked by mechanical stimulation of different number of contralateral vibrissae were studied. It was found that stimulation of all the contralateral vibrissae led to more extensive activation than the barrel field in the somatosensory cortex. The activation was most widespread when all the vibrissae were synchronously deflected. With reduction of the number of synchronously stimulated whiskers the activated cortical area did not decrease in parallel. Deflection of only a few whiskers activated significantly smaller cortical areas.

Somatosensory evoked potentials following lesions of the claustrum
Ipsi- and contralateral cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded following median nerve stimulation in 12 patients with unilateral brain lesions and in 5 healthy subjects. Computed tomographic scans of brain were performed on admission. In all patients with lesions of the claustrum there was absence of SEP contralateral to the side of the lesion and ipsilateral to the stimulated nerve. This phenomenon did not appear in our material following lesions involving other structures e.g. thalamus or somatosensory cortex. Our observations suggest that the claustrum may influence deeply the contralateral somatosensory cortex. This may be due to the fact that a large part of the claustrum is involved in transmission of the sensory information from receptors to the somatosensory cortex.

The topography of early frontal SEPs (P20 and N26) to left median nerve stimulation was studied in 30 normal subjects and 3 patients with the left frontal bone defect. The amplitudes of P20 and N26 were maximum at the frontal electrode (F4) contralateral to the stimulation and markedly decreased at frontal electrodes ipsilateral to the site of stimulation. There was, however, no latency difference of P20 and N26 between ipsilateral and contralateral frontal electrodes. These results suggest that the origin of the ipsilateral and contralateral P20 and N26 is the same. The wide distribution of P20 and N26 over both frontal areas could be explained by assuming a smearing effect from generators actually located in the rolandic fissure and motor cortex.

Field potentials (FP) and responses of single neurones to electrical stimulation of vibrissal pads have been recorded in motor cortex in the albino mature and developing rats. The FPs were characterized by 3-phasic shape and high stability in mature rats. The FPs evoked by contralateral stimuli have a range of onset latency of 4 to 24 ms (peak of distribution 8-11 ms); those to ipsilateral stimuli have a latency of 4 to 23 ms (peak of distribution 12-16 ms). Responses of single neurones were evoked with a latency of 9 to 20 ms. Usually, the FPs were evoked by both contralateral and ipsilateral stimulation, and in some tracks were effective only ipsilateral stimuli in the developing rats beginning from the 11th day of life. The FPs in such animals were less stable and more fatigable. During 2-4 weeks of life, FPs evoked by contralateral stimulation appeared with a latency of 15 to 46 ms; during the same period, a latency of single unit responses ranged between 20 to 33 ms. The FPs to ipsilateral stimuli appeared with a latency of 18 to 47 ms, a latency of single unit responses of 27 to 47 ms. The results indicate functional immaturity of vibrissal system up to the end of the first month of rat life.

Electrophysiological studies have revealed that a large proportion of the mouse primary visual cortex (V1) receives input also from the ipsilateral eye. This is surprising as most optic nerve fibers cross at the optic chiasm in mice. Inactivating V1 of one hemisphere has recently demonstrated a strong contribution of one hemisphere''s activity on binocularity of single units and visually evoked potentials of V1 in the other hemisphere of young rats and of single units in young adult mice. Here we used intrinsic signal optical imaging to quantitatively study the influence of cortico-cortical connections on the magnitude of neuronal activation in the entire binocular zone of adult mouse V1. We simultaneously measured V1-activity of both hemispheres in adult C57BL/6J mice before and after blocking sensory-driven activity in one hemisphere with muscimol. In V1 contralateral to the inactivation, ipsilateral eye evoked activity was reduced by on average 18% while contralateral eye evoked activity did not change. Our results clearly show that cortico-cortical interactions exert a global amplification of ipsilateral eye evoked activity in adult mouse V1.

Using topographic maps, we studied the scalp field distribution of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to the stimulation of the tibial (TN), sural (SN) and lateral femoral cutaneous (LFCN) nerves in 24 normal volunteers. Cortical peaks, i.e., N35, P40, N50 and P60 were generally dominant in the contralateral hemisphere for the LFCN-SEP, whereas all peaks except N35 had dominance in the ipsilateral hemisphere for TN- and SN-SEPs. The findings imply that ipsilateral or contralateral peak dominance for the lower extremity SEP is determined by where the cortical leg representation occurs. As a result, mesial hemisphere representation results in peak dominance projected to the hemisphere ipsilateral to stimulation. Representations at the superior lip of the interhemispheric fissure or lateral convexity lead to midline or contralateral peak dominance. These findings also suggest that the paradoxically lateralized P40 is not the result of a positive field dipole shadow generated by the primary negative wave in the mesial hemisphere, but is the primary positive wave, analogous to P26 of the median nerve SEP. Accordingly, contralaterally dominant N35 is likely equivalent to the first cortical potential of N20 in the median nerve SEP. The difference in vector directions of potential fields between N35 and P40 may account for the opposite hemispheric dominance for these peaks in TN- and SN-SEPs.

Peroneal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were performed on 23 normal subjects and 9 selected patients with unilateral hemispheric lesions involving somatosensory pathways.Recording obtained from right and left peroneal nerve (PN) stimulations were compared in all subjects, using open and restricted frequency bandpass filters. Restricted filter (100–3000 Hz) and linked ear reference (A1–A2) enhanced the detection of short latency potentials (P1, P2, N1 with mean peak latency of 17.72, 21.07, 24.09) recorded from scalp electrodes over primary sensory cortex regions. Patients with lesions in the parietal cortex and adjacent subcortical areas demonstrated low amplitude and poorly formed short latency peroneal potentials, and absence of components beyond P3 peak with mean latency of 28.06 msec. In these patients, recordings to right and left median nerve (MN) stimulation showed absence or distorted components subsequent to N1 (N18) potential. These observations suggest that components subsequent to P3 potential in response to PN stimulation, and subsequent to N18 potential in response to MN stimulation, are generated in the parietal cortical regions.

Whether interlimb reflexes emerge only after a severe insult to the human spinal cord is controversial. Here the aim was to examine interlimb reflexes at rest in participants with chronic (>1 year) spinal cord injury (SCI, n = 17) and able-bodied control participants (n = 5). Cutaneous reflexes were evoked by delivering up to 30 trains of stimuli to either the superficial peroneal nerve on the dorsum of the foot or the radial nerve at the wrist (5 pulses, 300 Hz, approximately every 30 s). Participants were instructed to relax the test muscles prior to the delivery of the stimuli. Electromyographic activity was recorded bilaterally in proximal and distal arm and leg muscles. Superficial peroneal nerve stimulation evoked interlimb reflexes in ipsilateral and contralateral arm and contralateral leg muscles of SCI and control participants. Radial nerve stimulation evoked interlimb reflexes in the ipsilateral leg and contralateral arm muscles of control and SCI participants but only contralateral leg muscles of control participants. Interlimb reflexes evoked by superficial peroneal nerve stimulation were longer in latency and duration, and larger in magnitude in SCI participants. Interlimb reflex properties were similar for both SCI and control groups for radial nerve stimulation. Ascending interlimb reflexes tended to occur with a higher incidence in participants with SCI, while descending interlimb reflexes occurred with a higher incidence in able-bodied participants. However, the overall incidence of interlimb reflexes in SCI and neurologically intact participants was similar which suggests that the neural circuitry underlying these reflexes does not necessarily develop after central nervous system injury.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether rhythmic arm swing modulates the long latency effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on soleus motoneuron pool excitability. Ten healthy humans rhythmically swung the left arm back and forth in a sitting position. The soleus H-reflex was evoked when the arm was in the backward swing phase. Conditioning TMS was delivered over the motor cortex 8?ms before the soleus H-reflex was evoked. The soleus H-reflex amplitude in both legs was depressed by the rhythmic arm swing. In contrast, rhythmic arm swing enhanced the facilitatory effect of conditioning TMS over the motor cortex contralateral to the arm swing side on the soleus H-reflex ipsilateral to the arm swing side. This finding indicates that rhythmic arm swing enhances some polysynaptic facilitatory pathways from the motor cortex contralateral to the arm swing side to the soleus motoneuron pool ipsilateral to the arm swing side.

The aim of this study was to compare cerebral evoked potentials following selective activation of Aβ and Aδ fibers. In 15 healthy subjects, Aβ fibers were activated by electrical stimulation of the left radial nerve at the wrist. Aδ fibers were activated by short painful radian heat pulses, applied to the dorsum of the left hand by a CO2 laser. Evoked potentials were recorded with 15–27 scalp electrodes, evenly distributed over both hemispheres (bandpass 0.5–200 Hz). The laser-evoked potentials exhibited a component with a mean peak latency of 176 msec (N170). Its scalp topography showed a parieto-temporal maximum contralateral to the stimulus side. In contrast, the subsequent vertex negativity (N240), which appeared about 60 msec later, had a symmetrical scalp distribution. Electrically evoked potentials showed a component at 110 msec (N110), that had a topography similar to the laser-evoked N170. The topographies of the N170 and N110 suggest that they may both be generated in the secondary somatosensory cortex. There was no component in the electrically evoked potential that had a comparable interpeak latency to the following vertex potential: for N60 it was longer, for N110 it was shorter. On the other hand, in the laser-evoked potentials no component could be identified the topography of which corresponded to the primary cortical component N20 following electrical stimulation.

Attenuation of phrenic motor discharge by phrenic nerve afferents
Short latency phrenic motor responses to phrenic nerve stimulation were studied in anesthetized, paralyzed cats. Electrical stimulation (0.2 ms, 0.01-10 mA, 2 Hz) of the right C5 phrenic rootlet during inspiration consistently elicited a transient reduction in the phrenic motor discharge. This attenuation occurred bilaterally with an onset latency of 8-12 ms and a duration of 8-30 ms. Section of the ipsilateral C4-C6 dorsal roots abolished the response to stimulation, thereby confirming the involvement of phrenic nerve afferent activity. Stimulation of the left C5 phrenic rootlet or the right thoracic phrenic nerve usually elicited similar inhibitory responses. The difference in onset latency of responses to cervical vs. thoracic phrenic nerve stimulation indicates activation of group III afferents with a peripheral conduction velocity of approximately 10 m/s. A much shorter latency response (5 ms) was evoked ipsilaterally by thoracic phrenic nerve stimulation. Section of either the C5 or C6 dorsal root altered the ipsilateral response so that it resembled the longer latency contralateral response. The low-stimulus threshold and short latency for the ipsilateral response to thoracic phrenic nerve stimulation suggest that it involves larger diameter fibers. Decerebration, decerebellation, and transection of the dorsal columns at C2 do not abolish the inhibitory phrenic-to-phrenic reflex.

In neonatal rats, crushing or cutting the infraorbital nerve, the sensory nerve supply to the whiskers, has been found to prevent cortical barrel formation. However, both procedures are followed by regeneration of one-third to one-half of the nerve fibres and reinnervation of the whiskers. By counting fibres in individual whisker follicle nerves, it has been shown that 29-67% (mean 45%) of the myelinated fibres regenerate to the whiskers after a crush compared to 24-56% (mean 39%) after a cut. Further differences between the crush and cut lesions were indicated by studies on the time course of regeneration. Counts of the regenerating fibres at various ages as well as recordings of cortical evoked potentials in normal, nerve-crushed and nerve-cut animals showed that recovery was 3-4 days earlier in the nerve-crushed, compared with the nerve-cut animals. In normal and nerve-crushed animals the evoked potential was first detectable 2-3 days after birth while the response after nerve cut could not be recorded until day 7. Even after 60 days the amplitude of responses on both crushed and cut pathways was only about one-third of normal, while the latency was prolonged (normal 5.8 +/- 0.25 ms, crush 6.5 +/- 0.26 ms, cut 7.7 +/- 0.67 ms). Central changes occurring as a result of nerve cut or crush have been studied by microelectrode recordings from the trigeminal nucleus (the first synaptic level) and the somatosensory cortex. These also indicate clearly the greater severity of the cut lesion. Thus, in crushed animals, all levels of the trigeminal nucleus as well as the cortex show only minor modifications. The whiskers occupy the same total area and responses from all whiskers are present at their normal sites. However, after nerve cut, the responses from both the trigeminal nucleus and cortex show clear abnormalities. The total whisker area is reduced with a concomitant expansion of responses from the nose, check, lower jaw, and whiskers by the eye and ear. In addition, only one-third to one-half of the whiskers give responses. The site of these abnormalities is localized to the trigeminal nucleus since all whiskers show innervation in the peripheral nerve. It is suggested that the longer recovery time as well as the reduced accuracy of reinnervation may contribute to the poorer central recovery after a nerve cut.
