Adult black flies (Simulium decorum) that succumbed to infections caused by Erynia curvispora(= Entomophthora curvispora) were found in Ithaca, New York. Other than hyphal elements of the fungus, the only recognizable structures found within most cadavers were remnants of the tracheal system. Several female cadavers contained well developed eggs. A few males contained shrivelled testes. Germination of primary conidia produced: 1, secondary conidia similar to the primaries or; 2, rounded secondary conidia or; 3, very long germ tubes. In vitro culture of E. curvispora was achieved but its ability to sporulate and to grow vegetatively gradually disappeared. Insectary-reared S. vittatum and S. pictipes were experimentally infected by conidia from in vitro cultures in the laboratory. The incubation period of the disease under these conditions was about six days. In nature the mycosis not only decreases the life expectancy of black flies but probably limits their egg-producing capabilities as well. The mycosis probably compromises the fly's ability to vector filarial worms that cause diseases of man and other mammals.  相似文献

A mycosis was detected in Symphoromyia hirta (Diptera: Rhagionidae) collected near Ithaca, New York. Other dipterous victims of the disease included Rhagio mystaceus and Empis obesa. Afflicted flies, found on the under surfaces of leaves of woody plants, were affixed to the substrate by rhizoids. The pathogen formed both resting spores and conidia on the exterior of the cadavers. It grew rapidly and sporulated abundantly in culture. Attempts to induce infections in Musca domestica and Aedes aegypti were unsuccessful. The pathogen Erynia ithacensis sp. n. forms resting spores that are incised with very irregular ridges. This characteristic serves to separate it from other dipterophilic species of Erynia.This study was supported in part by the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research in Tropical Diseases.  相似文献

The possibility that the feeding rates of larvae of S. austeni and S. lineatum are influenced by the nature of the food material is considered in relation to natural river conditions and laboratory feeding experiments. Diatoms appeared to be the most satisfactory food source and bacteria (Pseudomonas) the poorest. Simuliid larvae attain high assimilation efficiencies when feeding on diatoms but the proportion of river suspended solids which they assimilate is probably very low.  相似文献

The distribution of eggs on sorghum by Atherigona soccata Rond. and host preference for oviposition were studied. The female laid her eggs more or less evenly on sorghum leaves, laying one or two eggs per leaf. Under field conditions eggs were most frequently laid on the third leaf, followed by the second leaf, while under insectary conditions the second leaf was preferred to the third. Sorghum bicolor was markedly preferred to other graminaceous plant species, Digitaria scallarum, Rottboellia exaltata, Setaria verticillata and Panicum maximum.

Dans les conditions naturelles les ufs sont plus fréquemment déposés d'abord sur la 3ème feuille, puis sur la 2ème feuille, tandis qu'en insectarium la 2ème feuille est préférée à 3ème. A troop of olive baboons (Papio anubis) was studied over a four week period. Total observation time was 140 hours, 118 hours of which were spent gathering quantitative data on positional behaviour and the maintenance and social behaviour with which it is associated. The contribution of each activity on a time basis to the positional repertoire is described and some data is presented on the development of positional activities in infants. The contribution of positional activities to various maintenance and social activities is also described quantitatively. The complex of positional, maintenance, social and environmental factors involved especially in feeding, foraging, play, and grooming are described and discussed. The similarities between the adaptive response shown during the study period and that of other ground living cercopithecines is also discussed.  相似文献

The aquatic stages of the cattle biting pest, Simulium chutteri Lewis utilize river flow in their dispersal and colonization behaviour. Peaks of drifting activity in S. chutteri larvae occurred in the early morning and late afternoon. It is deduced that female flies scatter eggs onto slow flowing waters upstream of rapids. Larvae hatch from drifting eggs and colonize substrates in slower flowing regions upstream of rapids, while later stage instars move into faster flowing regions within rapids where they complete their development. This microhabitat selection by S. chutteri leads to rapid attainment of large population sizes in suitable sections of river and reduces competition between different stage larvae. In their utilization of a variety of microhabitats the larvae of this species differ from co-existing simuliid species which restrict developmental stages to single habitats.Catastrophic drift was recorded for S. chutteri larvae and could be a mechanism to regulate population size.Drift of simuliid larvae off rapids was not related to benthic population densities in the rapids and was therefore not due to excessive production. It is concluded that larval drift off rapids is related to habitat disturbances associated with water flow fluctuations and the activity of aquatic predators and other animals.The distribution of S. chutteri in the Vaal River is restricted by oviposition requirements of the adult female. Knowledge of drift behaviour and water flow requirements of Simuliidae have been applied to manage the population size of S. chutteri in the Vaal River.  相似文献

Polytene and mitotic chromosomes of Simulium ornatipes and S. melatum were subjected to C banding procedures. In both species polytene chromosomes consistently show C banding of centromere regions, telomeres, nucleolar organiser and, unexpectedly, numerous interstitial sites. The interstitial C banding sites correspond to morphologically single polytene bands. Their response is graded and independent of band size. Interstitial C bands in S. ornatipes are scattered throughout the complement, whereas in S. melatum they are clustered. Supernumerary heterochromatic segments in S. ornatipes also exhibit strong C banding and inverted segments can differ from standard in C banding pattern. — Mitotic chromosomes of both species show a single centric C band with indications of two weak interstitial bands in S. ornatipes, suggesting that many C band regions, detectable in polytene chromosomes, are not resolved by present techniques in mitotic chromosomes. — Contrary to current opinion that C banding is diagnostic for constitutive heterochromatin, the interstitial C band sites of polytene chromosomes are regarded as euchromatic. Conversely, the heterochromatic pericentric regions of S. ornatipes are not C banded. — It appears that polytene chromosomes offer a promising system for the elucidation of C banding mechanisms.  相似文献

Fifty percent of anAmblyomma variegatum female population were able to find upwind-positioned targets containing the synthetic aggregation-attachment pheromone of this species or the pheromone componento-nitrophenol alone. The ticks were not attracted to the other components of the pheromone: methyl-salicylate and pelargonic acid. Platythyris is included in the Pygopidae because of the resemblance of its internal structures to that family, despite the great difference in external form. The genus occurs in strata of Barremian to Senonian age in Europe north and west of the Alpine line and probably originated in the Caucasian-Crimean region. Female carrot flies (Psila rosae F.) infected with Entomophthora muscae (C.) Fres. on days 1 to 4 of adult life were unable to lay their eggs near the food plant. Flies infected on day 5 of adult life showed an egg-laying behaviour similar to that of uninfected flies. E. muscae-infected female carrot flies caught in the field showed an egg-laying behaviour comparable to that of the flies infected in the laboratory during the first day of their live.Eggs laid by infected females were equally as fertile as eggs laid by uninfected females, and developed into normal flies.It is concluded that female carrot flies infected with E. muscae in the field do not in general contribute to the development of the carrot fly population, due to their abnormal egg-laying behaviour.
Zusammenfassung Wenn Weibchen der echten Möhrenfliegen (Psila rosae) zwischen den ersten und der vierten Tag in dem Laboratorium mit E. muscae infiziert worden waren, könnten sie ihre Eier an den Futterpflanze nicht ablegen. E. muscae-infizierte Weibchen, die ins Feld gefangen worden waren, zeigten auch ein abweichendes Eiablageverhalten. Ihr Behalten war mit dem Verhalten von Fliegen vergleichbar, die an ihrem ersten Lebenstag im Laboratorium infiziert worden waren.Von infizierten Weibchen gelegte Eier waren ebenso fruchtbar wie die von nicht infizierten Weibchen gelegten Eiern. Es wird konkludiert, dass E. muscae-infizierten Weibchen der echten Möhrenfliegen der Entwicklung der Population keinen Beitrag leisten.

Summary The adherence of zoospores of Lagenidium giganteum to the cuticle of mosquito larvae is the initial step in the infection process. Subsequently, a germ tube penetrates the integument, inducing a rapid melanization of the injured cuticle and epidermis. After entering the hemocoel the developing hyphae are occasionally encapsulated locally. This process is slow (6 to 12 h postincubation) and most frequently cell-free, although it can be mediated by circulating hemocytes. Sporadic hemocyte mediation of the humoral encapsulation process in larval stages of Culicidae adds a previously unreported dimension to this unusual type of defense reaction. The defense reactions of larvae of Aedes aegypti were ineffective against observed infection by Lagenidium giganteum.  相似文献

Abstract. Animal-baited traps, using fox, mink, rabbits and ducks, were used in host preference experiments in two habitats (Beach and Woods). A generalized linear model of blood-feeding host preference is presented to test for significant differences between the isomorphic species Simulium venustum and Simulium truncatum. The S.truncatum population peaked before that of S.venustum. On any given day the two species divided their blood-feeding efforts among the different hosts in the same proportions. On the Beach, fox was the preferred host at the beginning of the season, but by the end of the season flies fed with equal frequency on the fox and the mink. In the Woods fox remained the preferred host throughout the season (late May to early July). Possible reasons for these feeding trends are discussed.  相似文献

Experiments reported in Sandidge (2003; Nature 426: 30) indicated that the brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclusa Gertsch & Mulaik, preferred to scavenge dead prey over live prey and that the spiders were not detrimentally affected when fed insecticide-killed crickets. Extrapolations made in subsequent media coverage disseminating the results of this research made counter-intuitive statements that pesticide treatment in houses would increase brown recluse populations in homes. This information was presented as if the scavenging behavior was specialized in the brown recluse; however, it was more likely that this behavior has not been well studied in other species. To provide a comparison, the current laboratory study examined the likelihood of non-Loxosceles spiders to scavenge dead prey. Of 100 non-Loxosceles spiders that were tested (from 11 families, 24 genera, and at least 29 species from a variety of spider hunting guilds), 99 scavenged dead crickets when offered in petri dishes. Some of the spiders were webspinners in which real-world scavenging of dead prey is virtually impossible, yet they scavenge when given the opportunity. Therefore, scavenging is a flexible opportunistic predatory behavior that is spread across a variety of taxa and is not a unique behavior in brown recluses. These findings are discussed in relation to pest management practices.  相似文献

We have analyzed the anomalous pycnotic cycle of the X sex chromosome of the grasshopper Pyrgomorpha conica throughout both meiotic divisions and its possible influence on spermiogenesis. During diplotene the sex chromosome shows two differentiated pycnotic regions: (i) the centromeric region, which is negatively heteropycnotic, and (ii) the noncentromeric region, which shows alternating negatively and positively heteropycnotic zones in all standard individuals. The variation in size and location of the negative heteropycnotic zones, their smooth appearance, and their lack of effect on spermiogenesis lead us to suggest that condensation differences and not euchromatinization are responsible for their presence. In two individuals the sex chromosome appeared partially isopycnotic at metaphase I, and high levels of abnormal spermatids (macrospermatids and microspermatids) were found. We suggest that the possible activity of this chromosome during the second meiotic division may promote the disruption of spermiogenesis by affecting the mechanism that maintains intercellular bridges between normal spermatids.  相似文献

The responses of adult Amblyomma variegatum ticks released from various distances to different doses of the synthetic attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAAP) (made up of ortho-nitrophenol, methyl salicylate and nonanoic acid in paraffin oil), dispensed from the center of circular field plots, were studied in the presence or absence of elevated levels of CO2. Up to 90% of the ticks released were attracted to the pheromone source in the presence of CO2 within 3h. CO2 alone was unattractive, similar to previous findings in Zimbabwe, but unlike results from a Caribbean A. variegatum population, which was significantly attracted to this signal. In the absence of CO2, smaller but significant proportions of the released ticks were attracted to the pheromone, albeit more slowly, suggesting another variation in the responses of this bont tick to inter- and intra-specific signals. Our results are interpreted in the light of a study undertaken elsewhere demonstrating relatively high heterozygosity among tick populations. Possible directions of further research to explore the use of the pheromone in off-host control of the tick are also highlighted.  相似文献
