Host-specific development and survival rates were measured and population parameters computed for both a wild and a laboratory strain of the oriental fruit fly (Dacus dorsalis Hendel) in Hawaii. Gross fecundities of the wild and laboratory strains were 241 and 1551 eggs per female, respectively. Egg to eclosion developmental rates were 27 days for the wild strain and 24 days for the laboratory strain. The preovipositional period of the wild strain was 19 days compared to 9 days in the laboratory strain.Differences of this magnitude in fecundity and developmental rates between laboratory and wild strains have not been observed in other recent demographic studies of tephritids. The results suggest that the laboratory strain of the oriental fruit fly may have undergone more intense selection than laboratory strains of the other species.

Abstract. 1. This study was conducted in Greece using a wild strain of medflies ( Ceratitis capitata [Weidemann]) to assess age-specific vital rates in adults, and development and survival in pre-adults when reared on different host fruit. The results were used to construct life tables.
2. The demographic analyses suggested that there are basically four aspects of the medfly's life history which are of major importance: (i) multiple, highlyoverlapping generations; (ii) high net reproduction while young; (iii) high larval fitness in certain hosts; (iv) lack of diapause.
3. Reasons why these characteristics are felt to be important are briefly discussed.

ABSTRACT.
- 1 The sexual competitiveness of sterile melon fly males [Ducus (Zeugodacus) cucurbitue Coquillett] was estimated under field conditions.
- 2 The value of competitiveness was about 0.8 for flies in the fifth to tenth generation from the beginning of mass-rearing, but decreased to about 0.2 in the eighteenth generation.
- 3 The sexual competitiveness estimated using laboratory data was near unity even in the final stage of our study.
- 4 It was concluded that the field evaluation of sexual competitiveness is essential to determine the quality of the insects reared for purposes of pest control.

The influence of female mate preference on the fitness components of offspring was studied in the melon fly,Dacus cucurbitae. Adult flies were allowed to mate under two experimental treatments. In one treatment, 100 females and 100 males were allowed
to mate freely in a cage (cage-mating). In the other treatment, a single female was allowed to mate with a single male in
a small chamber (chamber-mating). Viability in the immature stages was not different between two treatments. The developmental
speed of female offspring in the cage-mating treatment was faster than that in the chamber-mating treatment. The wing length
of offspring of both sex in the cage-mating treatment was also larger than that in the chamber-mating treatment. These results
were considered to support 3-trait handicap models of the evolution of female mate preference.

The vapours of certain pure chemicals, typical of ripe fruits, elicited characteristic components of ovipositional behaviour from gravid Dacus tryoni (Froggat) in an olfactometer: the flies walked and flew upwind to the source of the vapour and then probed with their ovipositors. A range of alcohols, acids, ketones and esters having 2–6 carbon atoms were effective (1 and 10% of iso-butyric acid, n-butyric acid, methyl butyrate, ethyl butyrate, 2-butanone, ethyl lactate and ethyl acetate; and 10% concentrations of ethanol and 2-propanone). The most effective were 4–6 carbon acids, esters and ketones. Behavioural threshold for n-butyric acid vapour at 26°C was obtained from a 5×10–3% dilution in paraffin oil; maximum fly response occurred at about 200 times this concentration. Low concentrations of the 15-carbon sesquiterpene, -farnesene, were also very effective, despite its lower volatility. These results suggest that at least three different types of alfactory sensory neurones are involved in the identification of fruit attractants by gravid D. tryoni.

Evidence presented indicates that exposure of wild Queensland fruit files, Dacus tryoni (Froggatt), to a given host fruit type (e.g. pear) for 3 days causes females to attempt oviposition to a greater degree in that fruit type than in other fruit types (e.g. tomato, grape). The effects of exposure to a particular fruit type proved reversible, suggesting that D. tryoni females were capable of learning. Females exposed to pear for 3 days appeared to retain the effect of such exposure on acceptance of tomato for up to 4 days but appeared to retain the effect on acceptance of grape for less than 2 days. The possible significance of prior experience of females with a particular fruit type on future ability to discriminate among varying-quality specimens of that type is discussed.

Reproductive data were collected on individually-held adult oriental fruit flies, Dacus dorsalis, melon flies, Dacus cucurbitae, and Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata including age-by-parity relations, birth interval, frequency distribution of individual egg production levels and the concentration of reproduction among females in a cohort. Specific findings include: i) delay in reproductive peaks in a cohort after eclosion is due almost entirely to the variance in attainment of reproductive maturity among individuals; ii) low reproductive output of reproductively mature melon flies is due mostly to long birth intervals; iii) high egg production in both the medfly and the oriental fruit fly is due to their consistency of egg laying levels and frequency (short birth intervals). Discussion stresses the importance of viewing reproduction, not as a singular and discrete life history trait, but as consisting of subcomponents of daily parity, cumulative parity and birth interval.

Sperm competition inBactrocera cucurbitae was studied by double matings of one female with normal and sterile males, with different intervals between the first and the second matings and with or without allowing oviposition after the first or the second mating. When the interval was less than 4 days, the last-male sperm precedence,P
2
, was not different from 0.5, but as the interval was prolonged,P
2
was higher than 0.5. There was no significant difference between treatments in which females were allowed to oviposit after the first mating and only after the second mating. The reason for the higherP
2
when the interval was long was therefore attributed not to sperm usage for egg fertilization during the two matings but, possibly, to sperm mortality. ThatP
2
was 0.5 for shorter intervals suggests that particular sperm replacement mechanisms such as removal and inactivation are absent in B. cucurbitae. Our study is the first to demonstrate a significant effect of short sperm longevity on the last-male sperm precedence.

Electroantennogram responses of the oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis, to a spectrum of alcohol and aldehyde plant volatiles
Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from unmated, laboratory-reared, male and female oriental fruit flies, Dacus dorsalis, in response to a range of between C1 and C12 carbon chain-length saturated and unaturated aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes, most all of which are known host-plant volatiles. Only two of the 35 compounds tested elicited significantly larger EAGs from female than male antennae. For the two functional-group series tested, aldehydes elicited responses greater than or equal to the responses to the alcohols. In general, the unsaturated alcohols did not elicit responses significantly different from the saturated alcohols. However, the unsaturated aldehydes, (E)-2-hexenal and 10-undecenal, elicited larger amplitude EAGs than their saturated analogs. EAGs were significantly greater for a particular carbon chain-length, with responsiveness to primary alcohols peaking at C6 and aldehydes peaking at C7. The (E)-2- monoenic alcohols peaked at C6, while the (E)-3-alcohols plateaued between C5 and C8. The greatest EAG responses of all compounds tested were elicited by the saturated and unsaturated C6 alcohols and aldehydes which are constitutents of the general green-leaf volatile complex that emanates from most plants. The potential adapative benefit of selective sensitivity to green-leaf volatiles is discussed in regards to foraging behaviors of oriental fruit flies.

Psyttalia fletcheri is a solitary larval endoparasitoid ofthe melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae. Initiallycolonized in 1985, mass production of P.fletcheri for the last 10 years has beenfacilitated with a rearing method developed earlier. However, the level of parasitoid recovery seldomexceeded 35%. We examined the parasitoid'sdevelopmental biology and behavior to identify theprocedures that may improve efficiency ofproduction. We found that by limiting the depth ofoviposition dish (receptacle that holds the hostlarvae during exposure to female parasitoids) to 4 mm and using 4-d-old (late 2nd instar) B.cucurbitae larvae for oviposition, parasitoid yieldwas increased two-fold.

Recovery time after experience of a given minimum temperature below torpor threshold is related to the value of that minimum, the length of time spent at that minimum, and the temperature prevailing during the recovery period above torpor threshold. A model can predict recovery time for flies experiencing a given temperature fluctuation if the length of time spent at the minimum is expressed as a proportion of LE50 at that minimum. The model has applications in defining the optimal protocol for chilling insects for use in the Sterile Insect Release Method. The model was confirmed by experiments showing that it is likely that flies will recover from non-lethal frosts before ant predators become active.

Cohorts of mass-reared adult femalePysttalia fletcheri, parasitoids of the melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae), were exposed to host-plant stimuli in a laminar airflow wind tunnel to analyze the cues used in host-habitat finding. Parasitoids hovered twice as frequently around plastic zucchini models emitting fresh cucumber odor as around models emitting clean air. The odor of decaying pumpkin was even more attractive, resulting in over a 10-fold increase in hovering, a 50-fold increase in landing, and a 150-fold increase in host-searching and probing behaviors compared to clean air. Fresh cucumber leaf odors were not attractive to the parasitoids, but decomposing leaves elicited a strong increase in hovering, landing, and searching behaviors. Plastic leaves which visually simulated cucurbit foliage did not in themselves significantly alter orientation behaviors, but the combination of leaf visual stimuli plus decaying leaf odors caused strong increases in hovering, landing, and searching. Fresh pumpkin odor and the odor of yeast-inoculated pumpkin were not as attractive to parasitoids as decaying leaf odors. Yeast isolated from decaying pumpkin and cultured on various sterile media were not substantially more attractive than clean air.

Ovarian maturation was prevented in 7-, 22-, 23- and 28-day-old females of Dacus oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae), developed in the pre-imaginal stages at LD 12:12, 19±1°C and kept as adults at LD 16:8, 26±1°C without access to olive fruits. In females of the above ages having continuous access to olive fruits and held under the same photoperiod and temperature conditions, 54, 87 and 100%, respectively, had mature oocytes. When the females had access to domes of paraffin wax, the percentages of females with mature oocytes were intermediate between those with and those without access to olive fruits. Under the above photoperiod and temperature conditions unfavorable for maturation, 50% of 4-week-old females had mature oocytes if exposed for one week to olive fruits during their first week and 91% if exposed during their 4th week of adult life. The respective percentages with wax domes in the cages were again intermediate between those with olives and those without olives or wax domes. The presence of olive fruits had also a strong positive effect on the ovarian maturation of females which developed from egg through the adult stage at LD 16:8, 26±1°C, a condition favoring ovarian maturation. Access to wax domes had again an intermediate effect on maturation. It is concluded therefore that the lack of ovarian maturation of D. oleae females which is observed under a short photophase during the pre-imaginal stages if followed by a long photophase and an increase of temperature during the adult stage, continues at least till the end of the 4th week of adult life in the absence of olive fruits but is averted when such fruits are offered to the adult flies.

ABSTRACT. The tethered flight of the Queensland fruit fly, Dacus tryoni Frogg. (Diptera, Tephritidae), was investigated, and the duration of each flight during a 2-h experimental period was recorded. The pattern of flight was analysed, and related to the age, sex and origin of the specimens, and to the availability of host fruit during the rearing of the adults. The effect of adult crowding on the pattern of flight was also briefly examined. The results indicated that the origin of the flies had little effect on the pattern of flight; male and female flies showed different trends with respect to the proportion of short flights undertaken as the flies matured; and the availability of fruit had a marked effect on the pattern of flight in recently mature flies. These data are discussed with respect to the dispersive/non-dispersive movements of the flies postulated from previously documented field data. It is suggested that there is a characteristic pattern of tethered flight, which can be related to the absence of hosts in the immediate environment, and would be likely to lead to greater dispersal under natural conditions.

The sterile insect release method was applied to eradicate the melon fly, Dacus cucurbitae, from the 58.5 km2 island of Kume, in the Okinawa Islands group. Weekly releases of 1 to 1.5 million flies irradiated as pupae with 6–7 kR from a cobalt-60 source did not decrease the wild melon fly population. Releases of 1.5–2 million pupae per week made from September, 1975 to January, 1976 decreased the percent egg-hatch of females caught on Kume Is., but did not decrease the percent infestation significantly. The number of pupae released was increased from February, 1976 to accelerate the eradication process. When the number of pupae released exceeded 3.5 million per week, a rapid increase in the ratio of marked (sterile) to unmarked (wild) flies, a remarkable decrease in percent egg-hatch, and a decrease in percent infestation of fruits were observed. There has been no sign of melon fly infestation in wild cucurbit fruits from October, 1976 to the present time (April, 1977), despite the fact that more than 70,000 fruits were carefully examined. The eradication of the melon fly from Kume Is. was thus achieved by April, 1977, after the release of 264 million sterile fly pupae.

Ability to survive exposure to single or repeated periods at a subzero temperature is related to the temperature experienced, whether it is approached quickly or slowly, the time for which it prevails and the interval between exposures. The severity of any low temperature can be expressed in terms of LE50 (time required to kill 50% of individuals with one exposure). Minima enduring for 35% LE50 do not cause any mortality, even when repeated daily. Minima enduring for 44% LE50 cause ca 14% mortality on the first occurrence but no more if repeated at 3 day intervals, but 3% more per occasion if repeated daily. Minima enduring for 88% LE50 cause ca 40% mortality on first occurrence and an equal amount at each recurrence even if each is 7 days apart. Minima enduring for 125% LE50 and over 150% LE50 cause respectively ca 80% and 100% mortality respectively on first occurrence. The daily maximum temperature (in the range 15°C to 25°C) appears to have little relevance to the mortality caused by a repeated minimum of -5°C. Flies of different ages have a similar ability to survive a repeated minimum of -6°C for up to six exposures, but thereafter old flies are more susceptible than young ones. These results can be related to mortality caused by frosty conditions in the field so long as the time spent at the minimum is known and the temperature on the ground can be measured or calculated.
