What's bugging brood parasites?

Brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) might reduce populations of the songbird species they parasitize, including endangered species. Data are therefore needed on the frequency with which cowbirds use different species of foster parents. Hahn et al. propose a clever new approach by which the identity of foster parents can be inferred from host-specific lice the cowbirds acquire as nestlings. We discuss the feasibility of this method and underlying assumptions.

Organisms have been recovered with unusual metabolic capabilities and a chemosynthetic lifestyle independent of the recent surface photosynthetically derived energy inputs. The properties of the subsurface microbiota are critical when assessing aspects such as the utility of burying radioactive waste, the remediation of mixtures of organics, metals, and nuclides, and the search for life in extreme environments on Earth as well as on Mars and other extraterrestrial sites. In addition this pioneering work provides a foundation for examining life processes in extreme environments, such as the environment beneath the ocean floor.     

What's going on post-budding?

In general, the retrovirus particles become infectious on post-budding with cleavages of structural protein Gag by viral protease. Protease defective mutants bud particles normally, but the particles are non-infectious and called donuts-like particle because of their morphology. The viral genomes inside the donuts-like particles form very fragile dimer, which are far different from those in wild-type particles. The ordered particle maturation process is essential for infectivity of virus, but its mechanism largely remains unclear. We have constructed HIV-1 Gag cleavage site mutants to enable the steady state observation of virion maturation steps, and precisely study Gag processing, RNA dimerization, virion morphology and infectivity. As results, we found that these process progressed synchronously, but each transition point did not coincide completely. The mutual relationship between viral protein and RNA maturation is discussed for a further understanding of the retroviral life cycle.
