Effects of context on judgements of odor intensities in humans   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
This study evaluated whether the intensity of previously smelled odors could unintentionally influence the subsequent judgement of odor intensity. The predicted context effect was based on the adaptation- level theory. Before and 25 min after either WEAK or STRONG biasing odor concentrations, 51 subjects were required to rate the intensity of 10 different odor concentrations of California Orange Oil. After the WEAK bias, subjects judged the odor intensity as being stronger than they did after the STRONG bias. Thus the intensity of odors smelled 25 min earlier can unintentionally influence subsequent odor intensity judgement. The findings are discussed in the light of two alternative explanations, namely, a central implicit memory process and a stimulus- level-based change at the peripheral level.   相似文献

In order to assess the influence of odors on human performance and implicit memory for odors, 108 subjects completed a variety of tests in weakly scented (jasmine, lavender or odorless) rooms without having been made aware of the odor. After a 30 min interval the subjects were shown slides of different surroundings, including the room they had been in, and were requested to rate how well a set of 12 odors, including a blank, would fit to these surroundings. Half of these contexts contained visual cues related to two of the presented odors (leather and coffee). After the rating of fit the subjects had to rate the odors for pleasantness, were asked to identify the odors with their correct names and to tell where and when they had last smelled these odors. One subject remembered smelling the odor (jasmine) in the room and was discarded from the analysis of the results for the rating of fit. None of the others reported recollection of the experimental odors. The results showed that in general jasmine had a negative and lavender a positive effect on test performance. If an odor-related visual cue was present in the context, the related odor was always rated highest in fit to that context. Furthermore, the subjects working in rooms with an odor subsequently assigned this odor to the visual context of that room to a significantly higher degree than subjects working in rooms with different odors. Since none of the subjects reported that they had smelled the odor in the rooms where performance testing took place, it was concluded that the memory for these odors was implicit. Further analysis showed that such memory was only found in subjects who were unable to supply the right name for the odor. The possible consequences of this latter finding for understanding the relationship between sensory (episodic) and semantic odor memory are discussed.  相似文献

We assessed the influence of different odors on detection of a sweet tastant, and the ability of imagined odors to elicit the same effects as perceived odors on taste perception. The tastant used was sucrose, and the two odorants were strawberry and ham. In the first experiment, participants either smelled or imagined one of two odors during taste detection tasks (between-subject design), whereas in the second one, subjects completed both the odor imagery and perception conditions with taste detection tasks (within-subject design). The effect was odorant-specific: detection of sucrose was significantly better when subjects smelled strawberry than when they smelled ham. Furthermore, imagined odors influenced taste perception in the same way as did perceived odors. We concluded that the odor-specific effect on taste perception is an authentic perceptual phenomenon. Our results also support the notion that odor-induced changes in taste perception are mediated centrally. Finally, our findings are in agreement with reports supporting the existence of odor imagery.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Rodents discriminate and prefer familiar odors earlyin life. Almost from birth young rats suckle in response tomaternal odor, but suckle less when nipples are cleaned withorganic solvents. In two-choice tests, young prefer familiarnest odors, whether naturally occurring or artificially presented, and can even be made to tolerate odors normally aversive orto avoid odors normally pleasant. Variations in maternal dietcan alter odor preferences of theyoung. Nest odors can affect vocalization of young rodents. In contrastto the consistent effects of cold temperature and handling inthe many rodents studied, nest odors may affect vocalizationdifferently in different species. For example, familiar odorsreduce calling in rats, but increase calling in pine voles.Nest odor also alters spontaneous activity in young rats, whichlocomoteless when maternal odor is present. In this paper I report that home nest odors enhanced locomotionin rodents of three species (pine voles, Microtus pinetorum;white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus; and wild house mice,Mus musculus), but that the age at which this pattern occurredand the relationships of nest odors to vocalizations differedamong the species.  相似文献

The effect of color on orthonasal and retronasal odor intensities was investigated. When odorants were smelled orthonasally (i.e., through the nostrils), color enhanced odor intensity ratings, consistent with previous reports. However, when odorants were smelled retronasally (i.e., the odorous solution was put in the mouth), color reduced odor intensity ratings. These different effects of color on odor intensity (i.e., enhancement orthonasally and suppression retronasally) appear to be the result of route of olfactory stimulation rather than of any procedural artifact. This supports previous reports that retronasal and orthonasal odors are perceived differently.  相似文献

Predators use scent to locate their prey, and prey animals oftenalter their behavior in response to predation risk. I testedthe hypothesis that voles would decrease their frequency ofscent marking in response to predation risk. I conducted trialsin which prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster, and woodland voles,M. pinetorum, were allowed to scent mark ceramic tiles placedin their runways in the field. The tiles were subjected to oneof three treatments: scented with odor from mink, Mustela vison(a rodent predator); rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus (a nonpredatormammal control); and no odor (control). No significant differenceswere found in the frequency of scent marking in response tothe three treatments for either species. To validate that volesdid not decrease their scent marking in response to predationrisk, I brought male prairie voles from the field site intothe laboratory and allowed them to scent mark white paper substratetreated with mink odor, rabbit odor, or no odor. No significantdifferences were found in the frequency of scent marks in responseto the three treatments. These results differ from what waspredicted based on laboratory studies with other species ofrodents that show avoidance, reproductive suppression, decreasedactivity, and reduced scent marking in response to odors ofpredators. Voles appear to scent mark different substrates andunder a wide variety of social and environmental situations, and this is not influenced by the presence of odor from a predator.  相似文献

Hundreds of studies have assessed variation in the degree to which people experience disgust toward substances associated with pathogens, but little is known about the mechanistic sources of this variation. The current investigation uses olfactory perception and threshold methods to test whether it is apparent at the cue-detection level, at the cue-interpretation level, or both. It further tests whether relations between disgust sensitivity and olfactory perception are specific to odors associated with pathogens. Two studies (N's = 119 and 160) of individuals sampled from a Dutch university each revealed that pathogen disgust sensitivity relates to valence perceptions of odors found in pathogen sources, but not to valence perceptions of odors not associated with pathogens, nor to intensity perceptions of odors of either type. Study 2, which also assessed olfactory thresholds via a three-alternative forced-choice staircase method, did not reveal a relation between pathogen disgust sensitivity and the ability to detect an odor associated with pathogens, nor an odor not associated with pathogens. In total, results are consistent with the idea that pathogen disgust sensitivity relates to how olfactory pathogen cues are interpreted after detection, but not necessarily to the ability to detect such cues.  相似文献

Explorations of the qualitative and quantitative differencesbetween the odors of pemenone (PEM), androstenone (AND) andisovaleric acid (IVA) show that they share a number of commonperceptual characteristics. Among these are similarities intheir odor quality and relative intensity ratings. PEM is alsoan efficient cross-adaptor and modulator of a subject's ANDsensitivity. Here we evaluate the reciprocal efficacy of ANDadaptation to alter the perceived intensity and quality of PEM,IVA and AND. Twenty-three people, including both those osmicand allosmic (n = 11) for the putrid odor quality of PEM, weretested. Following training in odor quality and intensity ratingtechniques, subjects sampled a selected substance for 2 minto obtain adaptation and then reported quality and intensityratings for the three test stimuli. There was significant self-adaptationby PEM and IVA in all subjects, but self-adaptation by AND wasonly observed in the PEM-osmic subjects. AND did not cross-adaptPEM or IVA to any significant extent. Collectively, these resultscontrast with our earlier study in which PEM was an efficientcross-adaptor of AND. Here, AND was no more efficient than thecontrol as an adapting substance for PEM, despite significantself-adaptation of PEM by itself. This lack of reciprocity inthe effectiveness of PEM and AND as cross-adapters is not relatedto differences in odor intensity, as the PEM and AND concentrationswere adjusted for each subject to elicit comparable intensityreports. These results support the notion that PEM, AND andIVA share certain perceptual characteristics, but interact differentiallywith three or more sets of perceptual channels that are nowthought to result in a putrid odor quality.

Subjective individual experiences seem to indicate that odors may form strong connections with memories, especially those charged with emotional significance. In the dental field, this could be the case with the odorant eugenol, responsible for the typical clinging odor impregnating the dental office. The odor of eugenol could evoke memories of unpleasant dental experiences and, therefore, negative feelings such as anxiety and fear, since eugenates (cements containing eugenol) are used in potentially painful restorative dentistry. This hypothesis was tested by evaluating the emotional impact of the odor of eugenol through autonomic nervous system (ANS) analysis. The simultaneous variations of six ANS parameters (two electrodermal, two thermovascular and two cardiorespiratory), induced by the inhalation of this odorant, were recorded on volunteer subjects. Vanillin (a pleasant odorant) and propionic acid (an unpleasant one) served as controls. After the experiment, subjects were asked to rate the pleasantness versus unpleasantness of each odorant on an 11-point hedonic scale. The patterns of autonomic responses, obtained for each odorant and each subject, were transcribed into one of the six basic emotions defined by Ekman et al. (happiness, surprise, sadness, fear, anger and disgust). Results were compared between two groups of subjects divided according to their dental experience (fearful and non-fearful dental care subjects) and showed significant differences only for eugenol. This odorant was rated as pleasant by non-fearful dental subjects but unpleasant by fearful dental subjects. The evoked autonomic responses were mainly associated with positive basic emotions (happiness and surprise) in non-fearful dental subjects and with negative basic emotions (fear, anger, disgust) in fearful dental subjects. These results suggest that eugenol can be responsible for different emotional states depending on the subjects' dental experience, which seems to confirm the potential role of odors as elicitors of emotional memories. This study also supports the possible influence of the ambient odor impregnating the dental office, strengthening a negative conditioning toward dental care in some anxious patients.  相似文献

J. Appl.Physiol. 82(2): 584-591, 1997.The levator velipalatini (LVP) and the superior pharyngeal constrictor (SPC) influencevelopharyngeal patency and soft palate position, but their behaviorduring respiration is incompletely characterized. To further clarifytheir respiratory function, we recorded electromyographic activity(EMG) in the LVP and the SPC in awake normal subjects breathing orally.EMG data were obtained in six subjects for the LVP and in nine subjectsfor the SPC. EMG activity and timing and ventilation were measuredduring isocapnic hypoxia and hyperoxic hypercapnia. Phasic EMG activitywas inconsistently present during unstimulated oral breathing. Timingof EMG phasic activity was variable for both muscles. Peak LVP activitywas mainly or exclusively expiratory in three of six subjects. Peak SPCactivity was mainly or exclusively expiratory in five of nine subjects. With chemostimulation, recruitment of phasic activity was observed inthe LVP in four of six subjects and in the SPC in five of ninesubjects. Tonic activity increased in four of six subjects for the LVPand in three of nine subjects for the SPC. However, the response wasalinear, and intersubject as well as breath-to-breath variability wassubstantial. In conclusion, LVP and SPC are characterized by the highinter- and intrasubject variability of EMG activity, timing ofactivation, and response to chemostimulation.

Olfactorychemotransduction involves a signaling cascade. In addition totriggering transduction, odors suppress ion conductances. Bystimulating with brief odorant pulses, we observed a current associatedwith odor-induced suppression of voltage-gated conductances and studiedits time dependence. We characterized this suppression current inisolated Caudiverbera caudiverberaolfactory neurons. All four voltage-gated currents are suppressed byodor pulses in almost every neuron, and suppression is caused by odorsinducing excitation and by those inducing inhibition, indicating anonselective phenomenon, in contrast to transduction. Suppression has a10-fold shorter latency than transduction. Suppression was morepronounced when odors were applied to the soma than to the cilia, opposite to transduction. Suppression was also present in rat olfactory neurons. Furthermore, we could induce it inDrosophila photoreceptor cells, demonstrating its independence from the chemotransduction cascade. Weshow that odor concentrations causing suppression are similar to thosetriggering chemotransduction and that both suppression and transductioncontribute to the odor response in isolated olfactory neurons.Furthermore, suppression affects spiking, implying a possiblephysiological role in olfaction.

Discrimination training in which introduction of S– waspreceded by 250 S + trials resulted in errorless learning inrats trained to discriminate between two odors or tones versuslights, but not in those trained to discriminate between twolights or two tones. In a second study rats were trained todiscriminate odor, lights, or lights versus tones and then givena series of 10 successive discrimination reversals. Only ratstrained with odors showed positive transfer on the first reversaland acquisition of a learning-set. These results, together withthose of others, indicate that rats show exceptionally rapidacquisition of operant discriminations when trained with odorsand that this performance superiority is probably because odorsprovide more salient cues than do tones or lights.  相似文献

Spontaneous responses to the scent marks of male Saguinus fuscicolliswere tested in experiments where the subjects received a choicebetween scent of intact males and castrated males. Male tamarinsdiscriminated between the odors of intact and castrated males, both on the basis of fresh individual scent marks and on thebasis of marks from several donors pooled in methanol. Theirdiscriminatory response to pooled odors was more pronouncedthan that to individual odors. Females discriminated betweenintact and castrated male scents only on the basis of pooledsamples. This result shows that castration causes changes inthe odor of males. The difference in the response of the tamarinsto individual scent marks as compared to pooled samples is discussedin terms of quantitative changes caused by extraction and ofindividual recognition.  相似文献

Pleasantness, familiarity, and intensity are 3 interdependent dimensions commonly used to describe the perceived qualities of an odor. In particular, many empirical studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between familiarity and pleasantness. However, on the basis of both theoretical and methodological perspectives, we questioned the validity of such a relation for malodors. We report 2 studies based on subjective judgments of a large sample of odorants (Experiment 1) associated with autonomic recordings (Experiment 2). Multivariate exploratory analysis performed on the data splits the whole odorant set into 2 subsets composed, respectively, of unpleasant and pleasant odorants. Subsequent correlation analyses have shown that the relation between pleasantness and familiarity is specific for the pleasant odors in the 2 experiments. Moreover, autonomic activity was more important in response to malodors than to pleasant odors and was significantly correlated with unpleasantness ratings in the subset of unpleasant odors. These 2 studies argue in favor of a functional dissociation in the relations between both subjective and autonomic responses to odors as a function of pleasantness and indicate that researchers in the olfactory domain should consider the relations between pleasantness and familiarity as more complex than linear.  相似文献

The olfactory acuity of mice allows them to discriminate odorsof conspecifics differing by a few genes. This acuity is usedin habituation procedures where investigation of novel odorsby the mouse can be translated into relative difference or similaritybetween the stimuli. This study adapts these behavioral proceduresto address suprapopulation divergence among urinary odors inthe house mouse. Specifically, we investigate geographical patternsof odor divergence within and between 2 subspecies of the housemouse, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus, whichdiverged in allopatry and met secondarily in Europe where theyhybridize. Based on M. m. musculus perception, our study suggeststhat odors of the 2 subspecies differ in both allopatric andcontact zone populations and that divergence is more markedin the latter. Our earlier studies documented mate preferenceand signal divergence between the 2 subspecies. Hence, we considerthe role of the urinary odors as mating signals. We discusshow signal divergence between the 2 subspecies may relate toreproductive character displacement. This study validates theuse of habituation procedures to reconstruct geographical patternsof odorant signal divergence, providing a strong methodologicalplatform to address reproductive character displacement affectingcryptic mating signals in mammals.  相似文献

It is well established that for most people linguistic processing is primarily a left hemisphere activity, whereas recent evidence has shown that basic odor perception is more lateralized to the right hemisphere. Importantly, under certain conditions, emotional responding also shows right hemisphere laterality. Hedonic (pleasantness) assessments constitute basic level emotional responses. Given that olfaction is predominantly ipsilateral in function, it was hypothesized that odor pleasantness evaluations may be accentuated by right nostril perception and that odor naming would be superior with left nostril perception. To test this prediction we presented eight familiar neutral-mildly pleasant odors for subjects to sniff through the left and right nostrils. Subjects smelled each odor twice (once through each nostril) at two different sessions, separated by 1 week. At each session subjects provided pleasantness, arousal and naming responses to each odorant. Results revealed that odors were rated as more pleasant when sniffed through the right nostril and named more correctly when sniffed through the left. No effects for arousal were obtained. These findings are consistent with previously demonstrated neural laterality in the processing of olfaction, emotion and language, and suggest that a local and functional convergence may exist between olfaction and emotional processing.  相似文献

It has been established that the recognition of facial expressions integrates contextual information. In this study, we aimed to clarify the influence of contextual odors. The participants were asked to match a target face varying in expression intensity with non-ambiguous expressive faces. Intensity variations in the target faces were designed by morphing expressive faces with neutral faces. In addition, the influence of verbal information was assessed by providing half the participants with the emotion names. Odor cues were manipulated by placing participants in a pleasant (strawberry), aversive (butyric acid), or no-odor control context. The results showed two main effects of the odor context. First, the minimum amount of visual information required to perceive an expression was lowered when the odor context was emotionally congruent: happiness was correctly perceived at lower intensities in the faces displayed in the pleasant odor context, and the same phenomenon occurred for disgust and anger in the aversive odor context. Second, the odor context influenced the false perception of expressions that were not used in target faces, with distinct patterns according to the presence of emotion names. When emotion names were provided, the aversive odor context decreased intrusions for disgust ambiguous faces but increased them for anger. When the emotion names were not provided, this effect did not occur and the pleasant odor context elicited an overall increase in intrusions for negative expressions. We conclude that olfaction plays a role in the way facial expressions are perceived in interaction with other contextual influences such as verbal information.  相似文献

Although considerable anecdotal evidence suggests that pregnancy affects olfactory sensitivity, scientific evidence is limited and inconclusive. Whereas hedonic ratings are affected by pregnancy, odor identification is not. The aim of the current study was to examine odor perception in women across pregnancy and in the postpartum period. One hundred nonsmoking women who were pregnant, postpartum, or had never been pregnant were tested on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). Intensity ratings and scratch patterns were collected as potential indicators of sensitivity, and participants rated the odors' pleasantness. Participants also rated their own sense of smell. Mean UPSIT scores did not differ significantly across groups indicating no difference in odor identification. Trends in planned comparisons suggested that in the first trimester, odors were rated as more intense and less pleasant. In the first trimester, women scratched the odor strips significantly fewer times. Consistent with previous reports, 90% of pregnant women reported that specific odors smelled less pleasant and 60% reported that some odors smelled more pleasant. Although nearly two-thirds of pregnant women rated their olfactory sensitivity to be enhanced during pregnancy and overall pregnant women's self-rated olfactory sensitivity was higher than controls', self-ratings were not correlated with UPSIT scores nor odor intensity ratings. These results suggest that these and previous findings may reflect the fact that the effect of pregnancy on olfaction is small and inconsistent.  相似文献

The influence of chirality on odors was studied on 16 enantiomericpairs according to the dispersion/hydrogen bonding theory ofreceptor-odorant interaction. Comparisons of molecular structures were made by superimpositionof optimized conformations, using the Alchemy II package. Thequality of fit was assessed using the RMS parameter includedin Alchemy II and a new index for hydrogen bonding: the anglebetween H-bonds in the two molecules. In the case of camphoraceous odorants where an interaction modelwas already known superimposition according to the model ledto correct predictions of the high similarity of odors observedin enantiomeric pairs. For several urinous odorants comparisons were made using d-androstenoneas a reference compound for the urinous odor. Correct predictionswere obtained for l-androstenone, both enantiomers of androsta-4,16-dienone, and (+)-2-methyl-4-(5,5,6-exo-trimethy1-2-exonorbornyl)-cyclobexane.The (–) enantiomer of the latter compound was correctlypredicted only if it was assumed that its weak intensity isdue to a partial interaction with the hydrophobic zone of thereceptor. For ambergris odorants which have a complex odor (–)-Ambroxwas selected as the reference compound. The odors of (+)-Ambroxand enantiomers of four other compounds (ambergris or woody)were correctly predicted by superimposition. For nootkatone and three derivatives which have a grapefruitnote for one enantiomer and a woody note for the other no modelsor reference compounds were available. The superimpositionswere made between grapefruit enantiomers, on the one hand, andwoody enantiomers on the other hand. Woody and grapefruit characterswere correctly predicted in all cases. The limits of this approach based on molecular modelling arediscussed.  相似文献
