Summary Ingestion and filtering rates in larval Xenopus laevis, Bufo calamita, Rana temporia and Bufo bufo fed suspensions of Chlorella fusca were investigated. Concentrations were measured with a Coulter Counter. (1) For all species, filtration occurred at concentrations far below those reported by other authors for Rana sylvatica feeding on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. For Bufo bufo, only larvae near metamorphosis showed ingestion at low particle concentrations. Since buccopharyngeal ventilation continues even in the absence of food particles, this threshold feeding behaviour in the younger larvae must be due to different mechanisms to those found in Daphnia and Calanus studied by other authors: probably reduction of the buccal pumping rate and the mucus production of the filter apparatus. (2) For B. calamita, R. temporaria and X. laevis the highest suspension feeding efficiency was at early tadpole stages, corresponding with the high growth rate of these stages. Summary We have investigated interspecific interactions between larvae of the 3 native British anurans, Rana temporaria, Bufo bufo and B. calamita in the field and in the laboratory. Over a 3 year period, predation of B. calamita spawn by the two competitively superior species accounted for only 0.3–3.0% of the total deposited in the dune pools of the study site. However, in ponds with marked niche overlap destruction of natterjack spawn was often 100%. Furthermore, growth rates of B. calamita larvae surviving to hatch were grossly inhibited when large numbers (>0.1 per l) of common frog or toad tadpoles were present. Overall survival to metamorphosis by the competitively inferior species was always negligible in these situations. These results were confirmed by experiments using caged larvae, and by movement of R. temporaria spawn between pools. Growth could be reduced to <25% of uninhibited controls, and time taken to achieve metamorphosis extended by at least 40% in the presence of larger larvae. Laboratory experiments confirmed that inhibitory effects of both R. temporaria and B. bufo larvae on growth by B. calamita tadpoles was demonstrable at tadpole densities comparable with those found in the field.  相似文献

Summary Tadpoles ofBufo calamita, a species that spawns in little temporary pools, were tested on intra- and interspecific crowding-effects. Water was conditioned by tadpoles of the following species:Bufo calamita (tadpoles of different age),Alytes obstetricans, Bombina variegata, Bufo bufo, Hyla arborea, Rana lessonae, R. ridibunda andR. temporaria. Tadpoles ofBufo calamita are most sensitive to water conditioned by older tadpoles of the own species during the first 2–3 weeks of development. They are also strongly inhibited by tadpoles ofRana temporaria andBufo bufo (that, as a rule, do not occur in the same habitat). Relative little effects are observed in water conditioned by tadpoles of the two species that occur very often in ecological sympatry withBufo calamita: Hyla arborea andBombina variegata. Young tadpoles ofBufo calamita are most tolerant of tadpoles of the same age of the own species. The crowding-effect increases with the number and weight of tadpoles/volume conditioning the water. In the age of 2–3 weeks the sensibility to intra- and interspecific crowding-effects fades. Thus inBufo calamita the age specific sensibility to crowding-effects in tadpoles may act as a density regulation mechanism in temporary pools.

Summary Most hybrids betweenBufo bufo andB. calamita obtained by nuclear transplantation become arrested at the early gastrula stage. In both parental controls and the hybrid embryos, the presence and distribution of extracellular matrix was analysed with fluorescent wheat germ agglutinin and by immunolabelling with antibodies directed against fibronectin. InB. bufo andB. calamita gastrulae and in the few hybrids that complete gastrulation, the inner surface of the blastocoel roof is covered by a fibronectin-rich fibrillar matrix. In nucleocytoplasmic hybrids whose development was arrested at the gastrula stage, the fibronectin-containing extracellular matrix was either totally absent or poorly developed and disorganized.  相似文献

Two congeneric anurans with highly overlapping geographical ranges, Bufo bufo and B. calamita, were investigated with respect to isolating mechanisms during the terrestrial phase of life in the three habitat types in which both species occur in Britain. Marked spatial niche separations were observed in all three habitats (coastal dunes, upper saltmarshes and lowland heaths). B. bufo was associated with complex, dense vegetation structures and had a relatively wide niche, while B. calamita had a narrower niche and occurred mostly on open, poorly-vegetated ground. Food niche overlap was high at all three study sites. Animals translocated into atypical habitats returned to their preferred type whenever possible, and suffered increased mortality or loss of condition if prevented from doing so. B. calamita operated at significantly higher body temperatures (by an average of 1.4° C) than B. bufo when hunting at night. Experiments in outdoor vivaria indicated that B. calamita survived in open habitats because individuals escaped desiccation in daytime by burrowing into the substrate, whereas B. bufo lacked this behaviour and perished on the inhospitable surface. By contrast, B. calamita individuals lost mass and became hyperactive in densely-vegetated conditions because their hunting efficiency was selectively reduced relative to that of B. bufo. Taken together, the data indicated that spatial niche separation between these species during the terrestrial phase of life was dictated primarily by behavioural and physiological factors, and not by competition.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The functional response of the filter-feeding blackfly larva Frosimulium mixtum/fuscum was examined in laboratory experiments. We focused on the relationship between a component of the particle handling process (the cephalic fan flick rate) and ingestion rate, to determine whether ingestion rate is limited by handling-time. The influence of food deprivation on ingestion rate and feeding efficiency also was assessed. 2. Ingestion rate rose asymptotically with increasing food availability, leveling off at a concentration of about 100 mg1?1. Satiation did not account for this plateau. Flick rate (the frequency with which larvae open and close their cephalic fans) increased in a similar fashion, though flick rate only accounted for about two-thirds of the variation in ingestion rate. 3. A simple equation describing the components of the feeding process in blackfly larvae was developed to investigate alternate flick rate ‘decision rules’ capable of predicting relationships between food concentration, flick rate and ingestion rate. The flick rate did not follow a fixed time rule, in which larvae allow particles to accumulate in the fan for a fixed amount of time prior to retraction. For most food densities, flick rate patterns more closely approximated a fixed number rule, in which fans are retracted after a fixed number of particles accumulate. 4. Flick rate rose with increasing food concentration even after the ingestion rate had levelled off, whereas several optimal filter-feeding models predict that filtering rate should decline as food concentration increases above this level. This predicted behavior was not observed because the number of particles ingested per flick failed to increase with increasing food concentration. 5. The efficiency of particle ingestion (number ingested × number available?1× 100) was very low (<0.1%), and declined with increasing food concentration. 6. An increase in food deprivation time prior to a feeding trial produced a significant increase in flick rate, ingestion rate and feeding efficiency. This adjustment of feeding behaviour allowed animals to replace their gut contents more quickly following longer periods of food deprivation, which agrees with the qualitative predictions of optimal digestion-time models.  相似文献

Among the host fruits of the Caribbean fruit fly there are a variety of sizes and shapes. These morphological differences may influence the vulnerability of the larvae to parasites. In the laboratory, Caribbean fruit fly larvae placed in the smaller of 2 different sizes of artificial ‘fruit’ (cloth spheres filled with a diet material) were parasitized at a higher rate by the braconid,Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) when spheres were presented separately. However, when parasites were simultaneously presented with 6 different sizes of ‘fruit’ there was no significant relationship between size and parasitization rate. This may be due to the parasites preference to search for larvae in larger ‘fruit’. In field collections of different species of host fruit, a significant inverse correlation exists between fruit radius and rate of parasitization. However, host fruit size accounts for only about 5% of the variance in yearly parasitization rates.   相似文献

Starting in the 1960s, the Indian chemist Krishna Bahadur, from the University of Allahabad, published on organic and inorganic particles that he had synthesized and baptized ‘Jeewanu’, or ‘particle of life’. Bahadur conceived of the Jeewanu as a simple form of the living. These studies are presented in a historical perspective and positioned within mid-20th century research on the origin of life, notably the so-called ‘coacervate theory’ of the Soviet biochemist Aleksandr I Oparin. Larvae of the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis (Daudin), are efficient, obligate suspension feeders. We examine the relationship between the ambient particle concentration offered these larvae as food and their filtering, ingestion, and buccal pumping rates. We demonstrate that: (i) the larvae can sense and respond to a broad range of particle concentrations, down to 0.2 mg 1–1 (dry weight); (ii) their metabolic needs theoretically can be met by particle concentrations as low as 5 mg 1–1; and (iii) their patterns of regulation of filtering and ingestion fit predictions from certain models used to describe zooplankton feeding dynamics. Two such models are discussed: the modified Monod (Michaelis-Menten) model, with a lower threshold below which the tadpoles do not feed, and an energy optimization model. Both the models and the observed behavior of the tadpoles allow for stability of populations of food organisms. Tadpole feeding dynamics apparently are compatible with both the predictions and assumptions of these models, suggesting similar regulation of feeding by tadpoles and zooplankton. Ruminants are characterised by two different types of reticulorumen (RR) physiology. ‘Cattle-type’ ruminants have, amongst other features such as RR contents stratification and a heterogenous intraruminal papillation, a distinct difference between the mean retention time (MRT) of small particles and fluids (the ratio is called the selectivity factor, SF). ‘Moose-type’ ruminants have RR contents that are less stratified, a more homogenous intraruminal papillation and low SFs, indicating less difference in the MRT of small particles and fluids. To date, physiological data indicating a ‘moose-type’ physiology have only been measured in giraffids and Odocoilean cervids, raising the question whether it is limited to these taxonomic groups only. Here, we measured MRTs of fluids and particles in five duikers (Bovidae, Cephalophinae) from three species (Sylvicapra grimmia, Cephalophus monticola and Cephalophus sylvicultor) and found SFs in the RR of 1.27 ± 0.18—well within the range of these other browsers. These results are the first physiological indication that a ‘moose-type’ physiology may also occur in bovid species and thus might represent a true convergent adaptation.  相似文献

The distribution and occurrence of the aminergic structures of the hypothalamus and the hypophysis of the investigated species are very similar, except for the pars distalis. In the tadpoles of the anuran species Rana temporaria, R. arvalis, R. dalmatina, R. escutenta, Bufo bufo and B. calamita, the pars distalis is aminergically innervated (the Falck-Hillarp technique), but these nerves disappear at the metamorphic climax. In the larvae of the urodelan species Triturus cristatus and T. vulgaris, the pars distalis is devoid of such nerves. Electron microscopical studies of R. temporaria, B. bufo and T. cristatus confirm these observations. A discussion of the functional significance of the pars distalis nerves and the phylogenetic role of the difference between anuran and urodelan species is given.  相似文献

Many rice cultivars that originated from lower-latitude regions exhibit a strong photoperiod sensitivity (PS) and show extremely late heading under long-day conditions. Under natural day-length conditions during the cropping season in Japan, the indica rice cultivar ‘Nona Bokra’ from India showed extremely late heading (202 days to heading) compared to the japonica cultivar ‘Koshihikari’ (105 days), from Japan. To elucidate the genetic factors associated with such extremely late heading, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses of heading date using an F2 population and seven advanced backcross progeny (one BC1F2 and six BC2F2) derived from a cross between ‘Nona Bokra’ and ‘Koshihikari’. The analyses revealed 12 QTLs on seven chromosomes. The ‘Nona Bokra’ alleles of all QTLs contributed to an increase in heading date. Digenic interactions were rarely observed between QTLs. Based on the genetic parameters of the QTLs, such as additive effects and percentage of phenotypic variance explained, these 12 QTLs are likely generate a large proportion of the phenotypic variation observed in the heading dates between ‘Nona Bokra’ and ‘Koshihikari’. Comparison of chromosomal locations between heading date QTLs detected in this study and QTLs previously identified in ‘Nipponbare’ × ‘Kasalath’ populations revealed that eight of the heading date QTLs were recognized nearby the Hd1, Hd2, Hd3a, Hd4, Hd5, Hd6, Hd9, and Hd13. These results suggest that the strong PS in ‘Nona Bokra’ was generated mainly by the accumulation of additive effects of particular alleles at previously identified QTLs.  相似文献

Competition between larvae of two anuran species (Bufo bufo and B. calamita) was investigated under field conditions likely to disfavour cell-mediated interference mechanisms. The experiment used triplicated cage treatments in an unshaded farm pond, a poor habitat for the unicellular pathogen Anurofeca richardsi implicated in interference competition between these anurans in sand dune ponds. The farm pond experienced lower maximum temperatures than a nearby dune pond but sustained larger numbers of eukaryotic algae and therefore had higher primary productivity. Survival and growth of B. calamita larvae were inversely related to density in all treatments but interspecific effects were much more severe than intraspecific ones. There was no evidence of A. richardsi in any treatment and competition between the Bufo larvae was therefore intense in the absence of Anurofeca-mediated interference effects. Anuran larvae reduced the standing crop and altered the community composition of algae in the treatment cages but larval growth rates were not simply related to food availability. Algal cell numbers in larval guts, a measure of food acquisition, were however inversely related to tadpole density in both species. Feeding niche overlap was high but decreased as larval density increased. Resource competition was implicated as the most probable major mechanism. Summary A reliable method to screen Anthurium for burrowing nematode resistance and tolerance in vitro was developed using 17 genetically distinct Anthurium cultivars. Based on nonparametric data analysis, tolerance and resistance were found to be independent traits to be evaluated separately. An effective parameter for tolerance evaluation was ranking of relative leaf retention, whereas an effective parameter for resistance evaluation was the ranking of nematode reproduction, log(Rf+1). A comparison of the ranking of leaf retention with ranking of nematode reproduction clustered the cultivar responses to burrowing nematode infection into four groups: intolerant and resistant, moderately tolerant but susceptible, intolerant and susceptible, and tolerant and susceptible. ‘Ozaki’ was identified as an intolerant reference, ‘Nitta’ as a susceptible reference. ‘Blushing Bride’ was the most tolerant cultivar among those screened, but it may not be an ideal tolerant reference due to its low vigor. Future screening for burrowing nematode-tolerant and-resistant cultivars in Anthurium should include ‘Ozaki’ and ‘Nitta’ as internal controls. Evaluation of resistance should be based on a resistance index obtained by log(Rf of hybrid tested +1) divided by log(Rf of ‘Nitta’ +1); tolerance should be based on ranking of relative leaf retention.  相似文献

Thylakoid membranes and Photosystem I (PS I) complexes were isolated from a glaucocystophyte, Cyanophora paradoxa, which is thought to have the most primitive ‘plastids’, and the proteins related to PS I were examined. The intrinsic light-harvesting chlorophyll protein complexes of PS I (LHC I) were not detected by an immunological method. The PS I complexes consisted of at least eight low-molecular-mass proteins in addition to PS I reaction center proteins. The N-terminal sequence of the PsaD protein has higher homology to that of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and land plants, than to that of other algae or cyanobacteria. On the other hand, the PsaL sequence has the highest homology to those of cyanobacteria. Taking into account the other sequences of PS I components whose genes are encoded in the cyanelle genome, and the fact that LHC I is not detected, it is concluded that PS I of C. paradoxa has chimeric characteristics of both ‘green’ lineages and cyanobacteria. Leaf yellowing is a major problem in Alstroemeria and absence of leaf senescence symptoms is an important quality attribute. Two Alstroemeria cultivars ‘Yellow King’ and ‘Marina’ were sourced from a commercial farm and harvested when sepals began to reflex. Stems were re-cut under water and kept in vase solutions of gibberellin A4+7 (0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 or 15.0 mg l−1 [Provider]). Treatments and cultivars were combined in a factorial fashion and arranged in a completely randomised design. Application of GA4+7 in the holding solution at 2.5–10.0 mg l−1 significantly delayed the onset of leaf senescence by around 7 days and significantly increased days to 50% petal fall by ca. 2 days. Additionally, these GA4+7 concentrations resulted in higher retention of leaf nitrogen, leaf chlorophyll and also increased leaf water content, while reducing leaf dry weight, all relative to untreated controls. Cultivar ‘Yellow King’ had significantly longer vase life and a better retention of leaf quality than ‘Marina’. Our results suggest that a concentration of 10 mg l−1 GA4+7 can be used to prolong vase life, delay leaf senescence and enhance post-harvest quality of Alstroemeria cut flowers during their transport to market.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) leaf tissue of cv Bastille and cv Michoacan 12 was extracted with n-hexane. The extracts were bioassayed against 5th instar African armyworm,Spodoptera exempta (Walker)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), by feeding the larvae on agar based media or sucrose impregnated glass fibre discs. The hexane extract of the ‘resistant’ cv Bastille exhibited feeding deterrency and toxicity which were not shown by the ‘susceptible’ cv Michoacan 12. The hexane extract of cv Bastille was adsorbed onto silica gel, the solution filtered off and the adsorbed component taken up into ethyl acetate. Bioassay of these fractions indicated that the toxic and deterrent action was retained in the ethyl acetate fraction. Preparative thin layer chromatography of the ethyl acetate fraction isolated two biologically active constituents. These were both growth inhibitors and lethal by ingestion to the 5th instar African armyworm. Implications for resistance in maize varieties to insect pests are discussed.  相似文献

Plants with leaves having numerous trichomes or domatia frequently harbor greater numbers of phytoseiid mites than do plant with leaves that lack these structures. We tested the hypothesis that this pattern occurs, in part, with Typhlodromus pyri because trichomes increase the capture of pollen or fungal spores that serve as alternative food. Using a common garden orchard, we found that apple varieties with trichome-rich leaves had 2–3 times more pollen and fungal spores compared to varieties with trichome-sparse leaves. We also studied the effects of leaf trichome density and pollen augmentation on T. pyri abundance to test the hypothesis that leaf trichomes mediate pollen and fungal spore capture and retention and thereby influence phytoseiid numbers. Cattail pollen (Typha sp.) was applied weekly to mature ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Red Delicious’ trees grown in an orchard and, in a separate experiment, to potted trees of the same varieties. ‘McIntosh’ trees have leaves with many trichomes whereas leaves on the ‘Red Delicious’ trees have roughly half as many trichomes. With both field-grown and potted trees, adding cattail pollen to ‘Red Delicious’ trees increased T. pyri numbers compared to ‘Red Delicious’ trees without pollen augmentation. In contrast, cattail pollen augmentation had no effect on T. pyri populations on ‘McIntosh’ trees. Augmentation with cattail pollen most likely supplemented a lower supply of naturally available alternative food on ‘Red Delicous’ leaves and thereby enhanced predator abundance. These studies indicate that larger populations of T. pyri on pubescent plants are due, in part, to the increased capture and retention of pollen and fungal spores that serve as alternative foods. The morphology and development of the larval oral apparatus of Rana dalmatina, Bombina variegata, Bufo bufo, and Bufo viridis are described and compared using scanning electron microscopy. The species show different arrangements of the mouthparts. The small oral apparatus of R. dalmatina larvae has three labial tooth rows on the upper labium, while there are four tooth rows on the lower labium with a medial gap in row proximal to the mouth. The margins of the oral apparatus are defined by papillae that encircle the lower labium. B. variegata tadpoles have two upper labial tooth rows and three lower labial tooth rows that are uninterrupted, unlike the ones of R. dalmatina. The mouth is encircled by papillae that are larger than those of R. dalmatina. The oral discs of tadpoles of both B. bufo and B. viridis are similar. They are defined by two upper labial tooth rows (the second of which is interrupted by a medial gap) and by three lower tooth rows that differ in lengths in the two Bufo species. Both species develop papillae on the mouth angles and in two rows on the upper labium. Some morphological differences among the oral discs of R. dalmatina, B. variegata, B. bufo, and B. viridis tadpoles can be attributed to phylogenetic differences, but most can be related to their varying feeding habits and/or to their dietary specializations.  相似文献
