S ummary . Poorly cleansed pipeline milking plants gave much higher total and thermoduric colony counts than the internal surfaces of refrigerated farm bulk milk tanks, higher counts being recorded for milking plants after circulation cleaning than after cleansing by the acidified boiling water (ABW) method. Psychrotrophic counts were highest for farm milk tanks and lowest for milking plants cleansed by the ABW method. There was much variation in the proportion of thermoduric and psychrotrophic organisms in the total bacterial content of milking plants determined at 30°, thermodurics being much more prevalent in 21% of the rinses and psychrotrophs in 16%. Both groups formed about equal proportions in 9% of the pipeline rinses. The bacterial content of the farm bulk milk tanks was characterized by many psychrotrophs and few thermodurics.  相似文献

STUDIES ON THE USE OF BACTERICIDAL RUBBER IN MILKING MACHINE CLUSTERS   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
SUMMARY: Bactericidal rubber containing tetramethylthiuram disulphide was used in milking machine clusters cleaned by immersion in caustic soda on four farms, and by ordinary chemical sterilization on eight farms. Some reduction in the bacterial content of clusters was brought about by the bactericidal rubber, but high bacterial counts were not prevented, particularly where cleaning was inadequate. 'Fatigue splitting' of bactericidal rubber liners occurred after two to six weeks use.  相似文献

THE BACTERIAL CONTENT OF FARM DAIRY EQUIPMENT   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
SUMMARY: The results obtained during the examination of 2,310 advisory rinses of farm dairy equipment by means of colony count on Yeastrel milk agar at 30°, coli-aerogenes test at 30° and milk spoilage organisms (MSO) test at 22°, are discussed in relation to attainment of proposed satisfactory colony count levels. A much higher proportion of rinses of milking machine clusters gave unsatisfactory results than those of metal equipment. The MSO test (3 days, 22°) was a more sensitive indicator of the presence of milk spoilage organisms than the coli-aerogenes test, and is recommended for routine use. Results for milking machine clusters sterilized with steam were much better than those for clusters claimed to have been cleansed by chemical methods.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to explore if, and in that case how, various preventive measures against mastitis influenced the whole-farm economic outcome, measured as technical efficiency, of a sample of specialised dairy farms in Sweden. In particular, the paper aimed at analysing whether a change to preventive measures applied by fully efficient farms would be a way for inefficient farms to become fully efficient. First, technical efficiency was assessed for each farm in the sample based on farm-level accounting data and the data envelopment analysis. In a second step, the effects of preventive measures against mastitis (collected through a mail questionnaire) on technical efficiency were assessed with logistic regression. Keeping cows in a loose-housing barn, stimulating udders manually during milking, and having cows standing on clean bedding during milking were found to significantly increase the probability of a farm being fully efficient. Once the farmer considers the somatic cell count (SCC) to be too high, undertaking measures such as contacting a veterinarian, checking overall hygiene routines, and culling cows with high SCC were found to significantly increase the probability of a farm being fully efficient. Thus, these measures may be plausible targets for advisory services aimed at assisting farmers to become fully efficient, especially if they are confirmed in future studies. Several common preventive measures against mastitis, that is, choice of bedding material, frequency of cleaning stalls, pre-milking, post-milking teat disinfection, applying a milking order based on the SCC of cows, and milking high-SCC cows with a separate cluster, were found to have no statistically significant effect on farm economic outcome. However, these measures may still be valuable for non-economic goals, such as increased animal welfare, and the results imply that they can be implemented without negative impact on the economic performance of the farm.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to study the relationship between milk flow emission variables recorded during milking of dairy goats with variables related to milking routine, goat physiology, milking parameters and milking machine characteristics, to determine the variables affecting milking performance and help the goat industry pinpoint farm and milking practices that improve milking performance. In total, 19 farms were visited once during the evening milking. Milking parameters (vacuum level (VL), pulsation ratio and pulsation rate, vacuum drop), milk emission flow variables (milking time, milk yield, maximum milk flow (MMF), average milk flow (AVMF), time until 500 g/min milk flow is established (TS500)), doe characteristics of 8 to 10 goats/farm (breed, days in milk and parity), milking practices (overmilking, overstripping, pre-lag time) and milking machine characteristics (line height, presence of claw) were recorded on every farm. The relationships between recorded variables and farm were analysed by a one-way ANOVA analysis. The relationships of milk yield, MMF, milking time and TS500 with goat physiology, milking routine, milking parameters and milking machine design were analysed using a linear mixed model, considering the farm as the random effect. Farm was significant (P<0.05) in all the studied variables. Milk emission flow variables were similar to those recommended in scientific studies. Milking parameters were adequate in most of the farms, being similar to those recommended in scientific studies. Few milking parameters and milking machine characteristics affected the tested variables: average vacuum level only showed tendency on MMF, and milk pipeline height on TS500. Milk yield (MY) was mainly affected by parity, as the interaction of days in milk with parity was also significant. Milking time was mainly affected by milk yield and breed. Also significant were parity, the interaction of days in milk with parity and overstripping, whereas overmilking showed a slight tendency. We concluded that most of the studied variables were mainly related to goat physiology characteristics, as the effects of milking parameters and milking machine characteristics were scarce.  相似文献

Membrane filtration and epifluorescent microscopy were used for the rapid enumeration of bacteria in rinses of milking equipment. Rinse solution (10 ml) was filtered through a 0.6 µm pore size Nuclepore membrane filter and the bacteria retained stained with acridine orange. The clump count of orange fluorescing bacteria on the membrane correlated well with the corresponding plate count ( r =0.83). The technique is rapid, taking approximately 10 min, and is sufficiently sensitive to detect 1000 bacteria ml rinse (equivalent to 5 × 103 bacteria/m2 of milking equipment surfaces by the method currently in use).  相似文献

Background

Appropriate oral hygiene is required to maintain oral health in denture wearers. This study aims to compare the role of denture cleaning methods in combination with overnight storage conditions on biofilm mass and composition on acrylic removable dentures.

Methods

In a cross-over randomized controlled trial in 13 older people, 4 conditions with 2 different mechanical cleaning methods and 2 overnight storage conditions were considered: (i) brushing and immersion in water without a cleansing tablet, (ii) brushing and immersion in water with a cleansing tablet, (iii) ultrasonic cleaning and immersion in water without a cleansing tablet, and (iv) ultrasonic cleaning and immersion in water with a cleansing tablet. Each test condition was performed for 5 consecutive days, preceded by a 2-days wash-out period. Biofilm samples were taken at baseline (control) and at the end of each test period from a standardized region. Total and individual levels of selected oral bacteria (n = 20), and of Candida albicans were identified using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. Denture biofilm coverage was scored using an analogue denture plaque score. Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon-signed rank tests were used to compare the test conditions. The level of significance was set at α< 5%.

Results

Overnight denture storage in water with a cleansing tablet significantly reduced the total bacterial count (p<0.01). The difference in total bacterial level between the two mechanical cleaning methods was not statistically significant. No significant effect was observed on the amount of Candida albicans nor on the analogue plaque scores.

Conclusions

The use of cleansing tablets during overnight denture storage in addition to mechanical denture cleaning did not affect Candida albicans count, but reduced the total bacterial count on acrylic removable dentures compared to overnight storage in water. This effect was more pronounced when combined with ultrasonic cleaning compared to brushing.

Somatic cell count (SCC) can be used as a proxy for the prevalence of mastitis in a herd, reflecting the hygiene conditions and management practices on dairy farms, and thus an indicator of milk quality. In this study, we investigated how the adoption of management practices in milking systems can contribute to the reduction of SCC levels and improve milk quality. We collected data regarding management practices from 91 dairy farms in three municipalities of southeastern Pará: Parauapebas, Curionópolis, and Eldorado dos Carajás. Fifty milliliters of milk from each farm were collected in bottles containing bronopol, to preserve SCC. An exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) was performed to reduce the number of variables (management techniques) on dairy farms to some latent factors. We then used the selected factors to estimate the bovine mastitis management index to classify farms according to their use of technology and management techniques. Our results showed that most of the farmers (65.9%) used management techniques inefficiently in their systems, resulting in a significant loss of product quality, while only 3.3% had adopted the full set of techniques. The EFA results demonstrated that simple management practices including regular cleaning of the milking lines, a strip cup test, the California mastitis test, and washing teats with water before milking could be adopted to improve milk quality. However, in scenarios where the regulations become more rigorous, most farmers are unable to meet the maximum allowable SCC requirements, necessitating management innovations to reduce SCC. Therefore, the dissemination of knowledge, technical assistance, and access to new technologies is essential for improving management practices, and thus milk quality.  相似文献

The Microflora of Steam Sterilized Milking Equipment   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
S ummary : The classification of 1,466 bacteria, isolated on Yeastrel-milk agar incubated at 30° from 68 rinses of steam sterilized dairy equipment taken at five farms, showed that micrococci were dominant, with corynebacteria and aerobic sporeforming rods frequent, representatives of these three groups constituting 73% of the isolates. The microflora was characterized by the dominance of organisms which were relatively inactive in milk. Typical milk souring organisms such as lactic streptococci and coli-aerogenes organisms were rarely isolated, but anaerogenic Gram-negative rods resembling Achromobacter, Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium were not uncommon on milking machine clusters and on a cooling unit. The glass recorder jars contained a relatively high proportion of sporeformers.  相似文献

The reproducibility and efficacy of a swab technique for milking equipment in normal use was studied. Reproducibility was satisfactory when swabbing was done by trained personnel. It was confirmed that swabs pick up only a proportion of the microorganisms present on a surface; this proportion varies with the consistency of the contaminating material, but not with the type of surface on which it occurs. It is concluded that swabs allow the estimation of the maximum ability of a surface to contaminate the milk.
Rigid smooth surfaces of the milking machine are recontaminated by microorganisms originating from joints and complex parts of the machine during rinsing after cleaning. A procedure to evaluate the efficacy of cleaning these surfaces is proposed.  相似文献

Biofouling is one of the challenges that can strongly affect the finfish farm economy. Although several studies on biofouling in aquaculture have been conducted in the Mediterranean Sea, they focused on specific taxa or were limited to a particular period of sampling. The present study investigated for the first time the development, composition and variation in a biofouling community in a finfish farm with immersion time, season and depth. The results indicate that all these factors influence biofouling succession and recruitment. Moreover, the species that had a crucial role in structuring the community and in the farm cleaning activities were the ascidian Styela plicata and the bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. Compared with the literature data, the results highlight the heterogeneity in the composition of the biofouling present in the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, such knowledge of the biofouling community could provide important information about management efforts and the costs that farmers will face when siting new fish farms.  相似文献

The presence of highly heat-resistant spores of Bacillus sporothermodurans in ultrahigh-temperature or sterilized consumer milk has emerged as an important item in the dairy industry. Their presence is considered undesirable since they hamper the achievement of commercial sterility requirements. By using a selective 30-min heat treatment at 100 degrees C, 17 Belgian dairy farms were screened to evaluate the presence, sources, and nature of potentially highly heat-resistant spores in raw milk. High numbers of these spores were detected in the filter cloth of the milking equipment and in green crop and fodder samples. About 700 strains were isolated after the selective heating, of which 635 could be screened by fatty acid methyl ester analysis. Representative strains were subjected to amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, percent G+C content, and DNA-DNA reassociations for further identification. The strain collection showed a remarkable diversity, with representatives of seven aerobic spore-forming genera. Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus pallidus were the most predominant species overall. Twenty-three percent of the 603 spore-forming isolates proved to belong to 18 separate novel species. These findings suggest that the selective heating revealed a pool of unknown organisms with a higher heat-resistant character. This study showed that high spore counts can occur at the dairy farm and that feed and milking equipment can act as reservoirs or entry points for potentially highly heat-resistant spores into raw milk. Lowering this spore load by good hygienic measures could probably further reduce the contamination level of raw milk, in this way minimizing the aerobic spore-forming bacteria that could lead to spoilage of milk and dairy products. Assessment and characterization of this particular flora are of great importance to allow the dairy or food industry to adequately deal with newly arising microbiological problems.  相似文献

AIMS: As part of a field-based study of the distribution and persistence of Salmonella infection on commercial egg-laying farms, sampling was carried out on one or more occasions in egg-packing areas of 12 farms infected with Salm. Enteritidis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Salmonellas were isolated by cultural methods. Contamination was common, with Salmonella being found in 23.1% of floor swab samples, 30.8% of grading tables, 23.1% of conveyor belts or rollers and 23.8% of candlers. Four farms were sampled after cleaning and disinfection of packing plants had been carried out on the previous day, and residual contamination was found on 6.9% of samples from grading tables, 16.0% holding/sorting tables, 12.6% of conveyors or rollers, 16.7% of vacuum egg lifters, 21.4% of floor surfaces and 5.0% of egg store floor surfaces. Sterilized eggs passed through five farm packing plants showed a contamination rate of at least 16/5,948 (0.3%) egg passages. CONCLUSIONS: It is apparent that contamination in egg-packing plants may be a significant contributory factor to external contamination of shell eggs, and improved methods of cleaning and disinfecting egg-handling equipment are required. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The presence of Salmonella contamination in egg-packing plants presents a contamination hazard for eggs from Salmonella-free flocks. Samples from equipment in the packing plant could also be used for screening for detection of Salmonella in the throughout of the plant.  相似文献

Aims: To determine the effectiveness of premilking teat‐cleaning regimes in reducing the teat microbial load and effect on milk quality. Methods and Results: The effectiveness of several premilking teat‐cleaning regimes in reducing teat microbial load was assessed using 40 cows on each of the four commercial UK dairy farms with herringbone parlours during two sampling periods. In the first experiment, all the treatments reduced teat total viable count (TVC), but there was no significant difference between the hypochlorite wash and dry wipe, iodine dip and dry and alcohol‐medicated wipe or dry wipe alone. In the second experiment, the chlorine wash and dry wipe was significantly more effective in reducing teat TVC than a water wash and dry, chlorine dip and dry or a dry wipe. There was no relationship between cleaning regime and milk TVC, Enterobacteriaceae or Escherichia coli levels. Conclusions: All of the cleaning techniques studied reduced teat microbial load, however, the chlorine wash and dry was the most effective. Significance and Impact of the study: The premilking teat‐cleaning techniques studied reduced the teat microbial load and therefore reduced the potential for milk contamination; however, a wash including an effective disinfectant followed by a dry wipe was the most effective.  相似文献

AIMS: To provide molecular fingerprinting evidence of the contribution of wildlife vectors in the on-farm epidemiology of Salmonella Enteritidis infections. METHODS AND RESULTS: Salmonella Enteritidis strains were isolated from wildlife and from farm environment samples collected in 10 egg layer farms. Isolates were typed using plasmid profiling, XbaI-pulsed field gel electrophoresis and PstI-SphI ribotyping. In all 10 farms we were able to identify the same S. Enteritidis clones in wildlife vectors and farm environment. On several occasions the same clones were found before and after cleansing and disinfecting the farm premises. Also in some instances the same clones were present in mice samples, egg contents and spent hens. CONCLUSIONS: Definitive molecular evidence for the involvement of several wildlife species (mice, rats, flies, litter beetles and foxes) in the maintenance of S. Enteritidis infection on farms has been presented. Failures in biosecurity seriously compromise the control of this pathogen on laying farms. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This paper reports on the use of molecular tools for the study of the epidemiology of S. Enteritidis. It gives useful information to be considered in control programmes for this organism on poultry farms.  相似文献

Fouling organisms in bivalve aquaculture cause significant economic losses for the industry. Managing biofouling is typically reactive, and involves time- and labour-intensive removal techniques. Mussel spat settlement and biofouling were documented over 20 months at three mussel farms within Port Phillip Bay (PPB), Australia to determine if knowledge of settlement patterns could assist farmers in avoiding biofouling. Mussel spat settlement was largely confined to a 2-month period at one farm. Of the problematic foulers, Ectopleura crocea settlement varied in space and time at all three farms, whilst Ciona intestinalis and Pomatoceros taeniata were present predominantly at one farm and exhibited more distinct settlement periods. Within PPB, complete avoidance of biofouling is impossible. However, diligent monitoring may help farmers avoid peaks in detrimental biofouling species and allow them to implement removal strategies such as manual cleaning, and postpone grading and re-socking practices, until after these peaks.  相似文献

The rising global demand for animal products and the growing public concerns about the environment and animal welfare require dairy farms to improve their efficiency and apply more sustainable farming systems. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) could represent a valuable support in addressing these challenges. In recent years, dairy farms have been modernising and introducing new sensors and automatic systems for managing the herd. However, the diffusion of new technologies in Italian dairy farms is still limited and farmers are reluctant to invest in precision systems. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of PLF tools in Italian dairy farms, the motivations, benefits and limits of technological investments from the farmers’ point of view and the factors affecting the diffusion of technology. From November 2020 to June 2021, an online questionnaire was distributed and 52 responses were obtained. About 79% of the farms were located in Lombardy. The more represented milking system was the conventional milking parlour (73%), followed by automatic milking (19%). The average age of respondents was quite low: 35% of them was less than 40 years old and more than 50% was between 40 and 60. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of different factors on the presence of technology at farm. The age of the farmer, the milk production level and the presence of an automatic milking system influenced the technological level of the farm. Precision systems that provide information on animal activity for the management of reproduction and on milk yield and flow are the most popular and are considered among the most useful. Management of reproduction and milk production are the areas where farmers appear to show interest for future investments as well. Younger farmers appear to have implemented more PLF systems than older ones, and they show a propensity to invest in latest generation precision tools. Farmers seem to have a growing interest in PLF, but some limits have been identified: the investment costs, followed by the lack of time to check information from sensor systems and the difficulty in data interpretation. As PLF technologies can play an important role in the development of sustainable, animal-friendly and efficient livestock production, further improvements and efforts are necessary to increase the propensity to PLF of dairy farmers. Results can be useful in the Italian context but also in other countries where dairy farming is rapidly intensifying but PLF is encountering resistance.  相似文献

Changes affecting livestock farming systems have made farm work a central concern for both the sector and for farmers themselves. Increased pressure on farms to be competitive and productive together with farmers' demand for greater autonomy, holidays or time to spend on private activities and the family converge to underline the two key dimensions of work - productivity and flexibility - required for the assessment of work organization. This paper proposes a method called the QuaeWork (QUAlification and Evaluation of Work in livestock farms) to assess work productivity and flexibility on a farm, and its use to identify how livestock management can contribute to work organization on dairy farms. The QuaeWork method was set up through an iterative process combining surveys conducted with farmers in two regions of France, discussions with different experts and literature review. The QuaeWork was applied on a sample of seven dairy farms in the southern Massif Central in France to identify patterns of how livestock management contributes to work organization. The QuaeWork was used to analyse work organization over the year through a systemic approach to the farm, integrating interactions between herd and land management, workforce composition, equipment facilities and combinations of activities through a characterization of 'who does what, when and for how long'. The criteria for assessing work productivity were work duration (routine work, seasonal work) and work efficiency (per livestock unit or hectare of utilized agricultural area). The criteria for assessing work flexibility were room for manoeuvre and adjustments to internal and external events. The three main patterns of livestock management practices to work organization were identified. In pattern-1, farmers used indoor stable feeding practices with delegated work, with moderate room for manoeuvre and efficiency. In pattern-3, farmers used simplified milking, reproduction and breeding practices to seasonalize work and make it efficient with consistent room for manoeuvre. The method suggests social sustainability criteria to assess work productivity and flexibility, which are important for making reasoned decisions on livestock farm changes, especially innovations. Researchers could usefully exploit the QuaeWork to integrate work objectives (productivity, flexibility) into technical and economic goals.  相似文献

To maximise the return on capital invested in the milking parlour, the largest number of cows should be milked gently and completely in the shortest possible time. Bimodal milk flow and overmilking negatively influence the efficiency of the milk removal process and teat health. This observational study had the objective of investigating the prevalence of bimodal milk flow and overmilking, determining which individual and farm-related variables are associated with these occurrences, and determining the association of overmilking and bimodal milk flow with milk yield and with short- and long-term teat changes. Twenty-one farms were visited once during the study period, wherein the milking routine was timed, the teat condition was assessed, and dynamic evaluation of the milking vacuum was performed. A total of 606 vacuum graphic records were obtained, with an average of 29 ± 3 records per farm, in order to indirectly evaluate the milk flow and thus determine the occurrence of bimodal milking and overmilking time. The average percentage of bimodality per farm was 41.7%. The median overmilking time was 59 seconds, and on average, 78.3% of the cows in a herd were overmilked longer than 30 seconds. An association was found at cow level between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and days in milk, the total stimulation time, parity, and the preparation lag time. The increase in the mean total stimulation time and the number of passes during preparation were associated with a decrease in the proportion of bimodality in the herd. Parity, reattachment of the milking unit and milking in manual mode were associated with an increase in overmilking time of an individual cow. The presence of a clogged air bleed hole in the claw and the reduction of the cluster removal milk flow threshold were associated with an increase in the herd’s median overmilking time. The average milk flow decreased with the increase in overmilking time and with the occurrence of bimodal milk flow. An association was also found between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and decreased milk yield. A mean of 78.4% of cows per farm had short-term teat changes in at least one teat, and 33.6% of evaluated cows per farm displayed at least one teat with hyperkeratosis. These results emphasise the association of bimodality and overmilking on milking efficiency and reinforce the importance of the milkers’ actions and the functioning of the milking parlour for its prevention.  相似文献
