The abundance of Gloeotrichia echinulata colonies in the sediments of Lake Erken and their phosphorus content were investigated to determine the contribution of Gloeotrichia colonies to total sediment phosphorus. Moreover, the potential size of the algal inoculum and the migration to the water during summer were estimated.The surplus phosphorus content of the resting colonies in the sediment was about 45% of total phosphorus, which maximized at 8.5 µg P (mg dw)–1 or 81 ng P colony–1. The C:P ratio (by weight) in the early colonies appearing in the lake water was 50:1, while the ratio stabilized at 150 during the major migration period. The internal supply of surplus phosphorus was used during the pelagic growth of the colonies.The internal phosphorus loading to the epilimnion of Lake Erken due to Gloeotrichia migration could, from the measurements of the increase in particulate epilimnetic phosphorus, be estimated at 40 mg P m –2 or 2.5 mg P m–2 d–1 in late July and early August. Determination of the number of colonies in the sediment before and during the migration verified this value to be a conservative estimate of the internal phosphorus loading due to Gloeotrichia migration to the epilimnion in Lake Erken.The sediment P content calculated from the P concentration in early epilimnion colonies resulted in a value of 35 µg P (g dw)–1 as a maximum. This corresponds to only 3% of the total phosphorus content in Lake Erken sediment.  相似文献

In June 1992, an extensive investigation programme was carried out in the turbidity zone of the Elbe river. Special attention was paid to salinity and suspended particulate matter (SPM) and their influence on bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton, mysids and fish. SPM was separated into three fractions of different settling velocities. Mean settling velocity (ws) was 0.05 cm s−1. The major part of SPM belonged to the slow settling fraction (ws<0.02 cm s−1). Bacterial exoenzymatic activity showed a positive correlation with SPM and chlorophyll-a content, and also to total dissolved free amino acids. Phytoplankton biomass reached maximum values of 5.7 μg chlorophyll-a l−1 at ebb tide. Chlorophyll-a correlated negatively with salinity, indicating riverine input of phytoplankton. A positive correlation was found between chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen. Abundance of zooplankton species and their developmental stages varied over the tidal cycles; abundance of cirriped larvae and copepodite stages of the dominant speciesEurytemora affinis (Copepoda, Crustacea) was positively correlated with salinity. Individual filtering rates (IFR) ofEurytemora affinis were negatively affected by the SPM content of the water. Maximum IFR for adults was 7.2 ml h−1. Community grazing reached maximum rates of 30.3 ml l−1 h−1 (i.e. 72.7% d−1). The dominant mysidNeomysis integer showed maximum abundance at night, possibly resulting from diel vertical migration. Abundance ofN. integer was positively correlated with SPM content. The fish community, consisting of 17 fish species, was characterised by high densities of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus). A positive correlation was found between salinity and abundance of typical marine fish species, such as sprat (Sprattus sprattus). Similar temporal variation of abundance of smelt, sprat, andEurytemora copepodites indicates processes of habitat preference of these planktivorous fish in relation to optimal food supply. SPM was the factor controlling both distribution of organisms and the turnover of nutrients. Salinity only was important for the distribution of organisms.  相似文献

A detailed record of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in the benthic boundary layer (BBL) 1.5 m above an accumulation bottom and 13.5 m below the surface was obtained from frequent (30 min interval) beam attenuation measurements made with a Sea Tech transmissometer in the main basin of Lake Erken, a moderately deep (mean depth 9 m, maximum depth 21 m) dimictic lake in central Sweden. Concentrations of SPM (g m–3) were not as strongly correlated to the beam attenuation coefficient (c, [m–1]), as were concentrations of the inorganic SPM fraction. Apparently, this was caused by large optically inactive organic particles which significantly affected the measurements of SPM, but had little effect on the attenuation of light.When the water column was thermally stratified, SPM concentrations in the BBL showed a seasonal increase which was related to an increase in the thermocline depth. As the epilimnion deepened, there was also a marked increase in the occurrence of rapid and large changes in SPM concentration. After the loss of stratification, the amount of SPM and the temporal variability in its concentration was reduced. Since surface waves could not influence sediment resuspension at the depth of measurement, these data show the importance of internal waves in promoting sediment resuspension in areas of sediment accumulation. The relatively short period in each summer, when the thermocline reaches a sufficient depth to allow for resuspension over accumulation bottoms, can have important consequences for both the redistribution of lake sediments and the internal loading of phosphorus.  相似文献

Enclosures, open to the bottom sediments and to the atmosphere, containing about 17 m3 of lake water in the mesotrophic area of Lake Balaton, were used to elucidate the role of the benthivorous fish bream (Ambramis brama L.) in the lake during 1984–1986.Throughout the whole period water was less transparent in the enclosure containing fish, which strongly influenced the concentrations of suspended solids and chlorophyll a.Both phytoplankton biomass and production readily responded to nutrient increase in the enclosure with fish. In 1985 diatoms were replaced by cyanobacteria whereas in 1986, at a lower fish stocking, a shift in algal structure towards chlorophytes was observed.Egested organic substances and the resuspension of sediment particles by fish increased bacterial production.  相似文献

The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

Enclosures (17 m3) were used in the mesotrophic area of Lake Balaton to determine the impact of benthivorous bream (Abramis brama L.) on the lower trophic levels during summers of 1984–86. In enclosures with a fish biomass similar to the biomass in the eutrophic area of the lake, the number of phytoplankton species was highest. In enclosures with a low fish biomass the phytoplankton was dominated by the greens. A high biomass of bream in the mesotrophic basin caused bacterial production corresponding to that of the eutrophic part of the lake. Crustaceans were dominated by copepods and were unable to control phytoplankton peaks. Bottom-up effects of bream were more obvious than top-down effects and seem to be more important in the possible control of water quality.  相似文献

1. As supported by field data, turbidity recorded by light scattering sensors could reliably be converted into concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and coefficient of vertical light attenuation (Kd) in Lake Balaton. 2. Autocorrelation analysis revealed that proper determination of SPM concentration and Kd required daily sampling. To approximate daily rate of resuspension, 15 min or more frequent measurements were needed. Thus, routine monitoring provides very little insight into environmental variability of shallow lakes as habitats for phytoplankton. 3. The internal P load was estimated from daily rate of resuspension and P desorption capacity of sediments. The latter was assumed to be proportionate to the potentially mobile inorganic P content of SPM. A comparison with net primary production and nutrient status of phytoplankton showed that the proposed method of estimating time series of internal P load captured seasonal trends. 4. The daily rate of resuspension was high whereas that of internal P load was low in Lake Balaton relative to other shallow lakes. The latter reflects favourable behaviour of the calcite‐rich sediments. As a consequence, carrying capacity of Basin 1 of Lake Balaton was P‐determined. 5. The timing of external and internal loads was radically different. While the former showed mostly seasonal changes, large pulses characterised the latter. As a consequence, internal load may supply more P to phytoplankton growth during the critical summer months than external load. However, the relative importance of these sources may show substantial interannual variability. 6. Large resuspension events often followed each other during periods of 10–15 days. It has been shown that disturbances in this frequency range are of key importance in maintaining the diversity of phytoplankton. We propose that resuspension can be perceived not only as a disturbance factor but also as a factor that periodically relaxes nutrient stress. The former feature may dominate the instantaneous effect, whereas the latter may determine the persistent effect of resuspension on succession of phytoplankton.  相似文献

In Lake Volkerak, situated in the southwest of the Netherlands, downward settling fluxes are related to external inputs of suspended solids and wind action. The settling fluxes, measured using sediment traps, were 55 g (dw) m –2 d –1 on average. The ratio of metal concentration to scandium concentration was used to discriminate between external (polluted) suspended solids and internal (relatively clean) suspended solids. Generally, the contribution of the river suspended solids was small compared to that of resuspended material; the river-transported material was mainly deposited in the centre and to the east of the lake. The amount of material trapped increased substantially with increasing wind velocity.A simple model was used to interpretate the data. This model does not have a predictive capacity, but can be used to interpret and assess the significance of material retained in the sediment traps. Erosion was related to the wind velocity, using an empirical relationship between the orbital velocity of the wind-generated waves at the bottom and the wind velocity. The critical wind velocity for erosion to occur was estimated to be 5.5 m s–1. The extremely high amounts retained in the sediment traps in shallow areas during storms emphasised the importance of these wind conditions for the transport of fine sediments.  相似文献

The limiting factor in the water of Lake Balaton was calculated by means of Verduin's equation. If only the orthophosphate-phosphorus concentration is inserted into the equation, phosphorus is the primary limiting factor. If, however, total phosphorus is considered, the factor intensity of nitrogen will be the least, i. e. nitrogen will be the primary limiting-factor of plant growth. According to measurements during 1976, average values for the total dissolved phosphorus and orthophosphate-phosphorus content of Balaton Lake water were 15,66 mg/m3 and 7.66 mg/m3, respectively. Experiments with the algal strain Scenedesmus obtusiusculus Chod. (Chlorophyceae, Chlorococcales). were designed to test the availability of the condensed phosphorus form for the algae. The experiments were performed partly with synthetic polyphosphates, partly, with polyphosphates isolated from Balaton Lake water. The results showed, contrary to our expectations, that phosphates present in the condensed form (irrespective of their structure and degree of condensation). were not utilized by the algae under sterile conditions, i. e. in the absence of bacterial activity. In the light of the above it is recommended to consider only orthophosphate-phosphorus when calculating the limiting factor.  相似文献

Degradation rates of organic phosphorus in lake sediment   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Phosphorus (P) binding groups were identified in phytoplankton, settling particles, and sediment profiles by 31P NMR spectroscopy from the Swedish mesotrophic Lake Erken. The 31P NMR analysis revealed that polyphosphates and pyrophosphates were abundant in the water column, but rapidly mineralized in the sediment. Orthophosphate monoesters and teichoic acids degraded more slowly than DNA-P, polyphosphates, and P lipids. Humic acids and organic acids from phytoplankton were precipitated from the NaOH extract by acidification and identified by 31P NMR spectroscopy. The precipitated P was significantly more recalcitrant than the P compound groups remaining in solution, but does not constitute a major sink of P as it did not reach a stable concentration with depth, which indicates that it may eventually be degraded. Since P also precipitated from phytoplankton, the origin of humic-P can not be related solely to allochthonous P.  相似文献

Effect of cyanobacterial blooms on thermal stratification   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Enclosure experiments were performed at Akanoi Bay, Lake Biwa, in 1995 to determine whether the blooms of cyanobacterial algae changed thermal stratification in the lake. We used four rectangular enclosures, each 10 m × 10 m, with a volume of 200 m3, which were open to the sediments. Two enclosures, A and B, were mixed artificially by aquatic pumps from 1000 to 1400 every day, and the other two enclosures, C and D, were controls with no mixing. The experiment was conducted during late summer from August 3 to September 27. Chlorophyll a concentrations were highest in enclosure D, followed by enclosure C, both of which were controls without mixing. Enclosure A had lower concentrations than enclosures C and D, and enclosure B had the lowest concentrations. No large cyanobacterial algae blooms of Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. were seen in the mixed enclosures A and B. In enclosures C and D, blooms of Anabaena sp. occurred in the middle of August, and Microcystis sp. later became dominant in enclosure D at the end of August. In enclosure D, the water temperature changed over the diel cycle before August 17, with thermal stratification during the day and complete mixing at night. After August 17, as Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. became dominant, the temperature at the bottom of the enclosure did not change clearly over the 24-h cycle. The APE (available potential energy) density (a measure of water column stability) in the enclosures increased by almost 100% when the biovolume of Anabaena sp. + Microcystis sp. exceeded 20 mm3 l−1. These results indicate that blooms of Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. can increase the available potential energy in the water column and create more stable stratification for their growth. Water velocities were measured around water plants in a chalk stream. Low velocities (<100 mm.s?1) were associated with stands of plants while faster flowing water (>500 mm.s?1) was found in open water and above weed beds. An indirect method of estimating mean water velocity through weed beds, using discharge measurements, revealed velocities between 40 and 140 mm.s?1, while open water velocities ranged between 200 and 370 mm.s?1. A laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, seeded with fine, suspended, bacterial floc with 1.76 g volatile suspended solids/l, was used to treat synthetic methanolic waste. After 180 days of continuous peration, granular sludge with discrete granules of 1 to 2 mm diam. was formed, with 52 g volatile suspended solids/l. Granules were brown, relatively soft and had a settling velocity of 1.61 cm/s. Extracellular polymeric matter extracted from the granular sludge had high carbohydrate content but low nucleic acid content. The ash of the granular sludge contained Na+, K+ and Mg2+ up to 15.0, 11.7 and 3.75 mg/g, respectively. Plastic enclosures (limnocorrals) were used to assess the impact of adding NO3 - to an oligotrophic pond. The pond, Mare's Egg Spring, is spring fed at a constant temperature of 4.5 °C (the main portion of the pool never exceeded 6 °C) and a molar ratio of N:P of 0.5. The pool is dominated by the cyanobacterium (blue green alga), Nostoc pruniforme, which is capable of nitrogen fixation. This, in combination with the low N:P ratio, suggested that non-nitrogen fixing primary producers were limited by nitrogen. Over a period of one month, growth and nitrogen fixation of Nostoc, suspended chlorophyll, sediment denitrification, and benthic diatom diversity were not dependent upon nitrate concentration. However, sedimentary chlorophyll levels increased slightly when NO inf3 sup- levels were increased from 0.71 µM (ambient) to 214 µM. Limnocorrals with slit sides gave water replacement rates between those for complete enclosure and those in open water. In the open channel, Nostoc growth was highest, and suspended chlorophyll the lowest. In the closed corrals, Nostoc growth was the lowest and suspended chlorophyll the highest, with intermediate values in the slit corrals. Therefore, short term increases of NO inf3 sup- levels in nitrogen poor aquatic systems do not necessarily affect the biological community, but slowing water replacement in small ponds may have significant effects.  相似文献

Sediments have a significant influence on the overlying water, and nutrient release from sediments is an important source for lake eutrophication, particularly in shallow lakes. Sediment resuspension is primarily driven by wind-induced currents. In this research, the correlation between release rate of suspended sediment and flow velocity was studied, and an experiment on hydrodynamic forces was conducted in a rectangle flume using water and sediments collected from three sites in Lake Taihu, a eutrophic lake in China. It was shown that the starting velocities of sediment in Lake Taihu at three different incipient standards gained from the experiment were 15, 30, and 40 cm s−1 and the release rate of suspended sediment could reach up to 643.4, 5377.1, and 13980.5 g m−2 d−1, respectively. Based on the experiment, a water quantity and quality numerical model of wind-induced current with sediment pollution for Lake Taihu was developed. The model was calibrated and validated by applying it to the study of the water quality of Lake Taihu. The calculated values were generally in good agreement with field observations, which indicated that the developed model could represent the dynamics of sediment resuspension to a certain extent. This study provides a new approach and a practical tool for planning and management policy and operations to protect the water quality and ecosystems of shallow lakes.  相似文献

Summary Free-floating sediment traps used on a transect from Scotia Sea to Weddell Sea collected larger, more degraded, krill faecal strings in the deeper (150 m) than in the 50 or 75 m traps. The smallest faecal strings were only present in the shallower traps. Sinking velocity of smaller faecal strings was — as expected — much lower than for larger ones, with a total range of 50 to 800 m · day –1 for faecal string volumes of 0.007 to 0.53 mm3. Krill feeding largely on diatoms produced faeces with higher settling velocity than those feeding on non-diatom phytoplankton. Smaller krill faecal strings do not leave the upper mixed layer. Potential settling velocities as measured in settling tubes (without turbulence), may in this respect be misleading. Small oval faecal pellets of unknown origin showed relatively high settling velocities (80 to 250 m·day–1 for 0.002 to 0.013 mm3) due to higher compaction and lower form resistance to sinking.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Picoeukaryotes dominate the phytoplankton of Lake Balaton—the largest shallow lake in Central Europe—in the winter period. We examined the annual dynamics of picoplankton abundance and composition in the lake in order to establish if the picoeukaryotes merely survive the harsher winter conditions or they are able to grow in the ice-covered lake when the entire phytoplankton is limited by low light and temperature. Lake Balaton has an annual temperature range of 1–29°C, and it is usually frozen between December and February for 30–60 days. In the spring-autumn period phycocyanin and phycoerythrin rich Cyanobacteria are the dominant picoplankters, and picoeukaryotes are negligible. Our five-year study shows the presence of three types of picophytoplankton assemblages in Lake Balaton: (1) Phycoerythrin-rich Cyanobacteria—the dominant summer picoplankters in the mesotrophic lake area; (2) Phycocyanin-rich Cyanobacteria—the most abundant summer picoplankters in the eutrophic lake area and; (3) Picoeukaryotes—the dominant winter picoplankters in the whole lake. The observed winter abundance of picoeukaryotes was high (up to 3 × 105 cells ml−1), their highest biomass (520 μg l−1) exceeded the maximum summer biomass of picocyanobacteria (500 μg l−1). Our results indicate that the winter predominance of picoeukaryotes is a regular phenomenon in Lake Balaton, irrespective of the absence or presence of the ice cover. Picoeukaryotes are able to grow at as low as 1–2°C water temperature, while the total phytoplankton biomass show the lowest annual values in the winter period. In agreement with earlier findings, the contribution of picocyanobacteria to the total phytoplankton biomass in Lake Balaton is inversely related to the total phytoplankton biomass, whereas no such relationship was observable in the case of picoeukaryotes.  相似文献

The aim of the investigations was to identify the main process controlling the rather low phosphate concentration in the water of Lake Balaton. Three processes were taken into consideration: a) phosphate uptake by algae, b) coprecipitation with biogenic lime, and c) adsorption on suspended sediment particles. A plexiglass box open at the bottom was placed in the shallow water with its sides extending into the sediment. The water in the box was stirred. When phosphate alone was added to the water in the box, its concentration decreased very rapidly. On the other hand, if NaOCl was also added in order to kill algae and bacteria, the phosphate concentration remained constant. This proves the priority of life processes in phosphate removal. In the next experiment phosphate and EDTA-Na2 were added simultaneously to the water in the box. The complexing agent prevented biogenic lime formation but did not influence the rapid phosphorus removal. This fact indicates that the main process involved in phosphate control is direct uptake by algae. The same conclusion was obtained in laboratory experiments where labelled phosphate was added to the bottles containing Lake Balaton water. It was demonstrated by the photo-oxidation technique that the phosphate removed from the water was incorporated into the organic particulate matter.  相似文献

软体动物贝壳表型是适应性进化的结果,为探究贝壳形态特性与软体动物随水流扩散功能的相关性,实验选取9种具代表性的腹足纲和双壳纲贝类作为研究对象,研究了其成体的壳-体质量比与静水沉降特性及二者的相关性。结果表明:体质量的变异系数(C.V.=1.11)大于壳长(C.V.=0.67)、壳宽(C.V.=0.54)的变异系数;壳-体质量比具较强的种属特异性,种内变异系数小(C.V.=0.20),而种间差异极显著(P < 0.01)。受试贝类的平均壳-体质量比为0.32±0.13,陆生贝类的壳-体质量比显著小于水生贝类(P < 0.01),壳-体质量比最大的河蚬(0.54±0.06)是最小的非洲大蜗牛(0.17±0.04)的3倍,福寿螺的壳-体质量比为0.50±0.06。双壳类和螺类的沉降行为差异明显,只有中华园田螺、铜锈环棱螺和河蚬不能在静水中漂浮;沉降速度最大的河蚬((24.99±4.22)cm/s)是最小的椭圆萝卜螺((4.13±0.96)cm/s)的6倍,入侵种非洲大蜗牛((18.30±3.64)cm/s)和福寿螺((21.77±5.23)cm/s)与土著种铜锈环棱螺((19.48±3.14)cm/s)和中华园田螺((21.44±3.92)cm/s)在沉降速度上无显著差异(P < 0.01)。成体贝类的壳-体质量比与沉降速度(R2=0.28)、沉降加速度(R2=0.39)之间存在一定的相关性。在此基础上,贝类沉降特性随生活史变化的研究将进一步揭示贝类进化与种群扩散中的生态水力学作用。  相似文献

As one of the major measures for controlling the man-made eutrophication of Lake Balaton, the Hidvég reservoir of 20 km2 surface area was built near the mouth of River Zala, draining half the watershed of the lake, and representing the largest nutrient source for the lake. The reservoir, as the first element of the expected total system of 70 km2 surface area (Kis-Balaton Control System), started to operate in June 1985, aiming at removing nutrients primarily through sedimentation, adsorption and uptake by macrophytes.Detailed investigations began with the operation. These cover the observation of upstream and downstream nutrient loads and the water quality in the reservoir, the study of major phosphorus removal processes, and analysis of the nitrogen cycle and of the behaviour of phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish and macrophytes. The research programme is completed by the evaluation of observations (including the use of phosphorus budget models), with special emphasis on future operation modes of the reservoir.The nutrient removal efficiencies in the reservoir came up to expectations. The removal rates for suspended solids, total-P, soluble reactive-P and nitrate-N exceeded 50 % in the first full year of operation (1986). As a result of reservoir operation, nutrient loads in the western basin of Lake Balaton have been significantly reduced. However, the improvement in water quality can be expected only with a lag time due to the internal P load of the basin.  相似文献
