Interaction between the execution process of eye movement and that of hand movement must be indispensable for eye–hand coordination. The present study investigated corticospinal excitability in the hand muscles during the premotor processes of eye and/or hand movement to elucidate interaction between these processes. Healthy humans performed a precued reaction task of eye and/or finger movement and motor-evoked potentials in the hand muscles were evoked in the reaction time. Leftward eye movement suppressed corticospinal excitability in the right abductor digiti minimi muscle only when little finger abduction was simultaneously executed. Corticospinal excitability in the first dorsal interosseous muscle was not suppressed by eye movement regardless of whether or not it was accompanied by finger movement. Suppression of corticospinal excitability in the hand muscles induced by eye movement in the premotor period depends on the direction of eye movement, the muscle tested, and the premotor process of the tested muscle. The suppression may reflect interaction between the motor process of eye movement and that of hand movement particularly active during eye–hand coordination tasks during which both processes proceed.  相似文献

We investigate the role of obstacle avoidance in visually guided reaching and grasping movements. We report on a human study in which subjects performed prehensile motion with obstacle avoidance where the position of the obstacle was systematically varied across trials. These experiments suggest that reaching with obstacle avoidance is organized in a sequential manner, where the obstacle acts as an intermediary target. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the notion of workspace travelled by the hand is embedded explicitly in a forward planning scheme, which is actively involved in detecting obstacles on the way when performing reaching. We find that the gaze proactively coordinates the pattern of eye–arm motion during obstacle avoidance. This study provides also a quantitative assessment of the coupling between the eye–arm–hand motion. We show that the coupling follows regular phase dependencies and is unaltered during obstacle avoidance. These observations provide a basis for the design of a computational model. Our controller extends the coupled dynamical systems framework and provides fast and synchronous control of the eyes, the arm and the hand within a single and compact framework, mimicking similar control system found in humans. We validate our model for visuomotor control of a humanoid robot.  相似文献

Conventional kinesin (kinesin-1) is a motor protein that performs a vital function in the eukaryotic cell: it actively transports cargo to required destinations. Kinesin pulls cargo along microtubule tracks using twin linked motor domains (heads) that bind the microtubule, hydrolyse ATP, and alternately step forward. The detail of the kinesin walk has yet to be discovered but a prominent theory is that the mechanism is rectified Brownian motion (RBM) biased by linker zippering. There is evidence that an ATP binding gate coordinates the heads. The hypothesis proposed here is that the gate is unnecessary, that entropic linker strain is sufficient to enable procession. An agent-based computer simulation has been devised to explore head coordination in the RBM model. Walking was found to emerge in silico without a gate to synchronise the heads. Further investigation of the model by applying a range of hindering loads resulted in backstepping or detachment with similar characteristics to behaviour observed in vitro. It is unclear whether kinesin waits at an obstacle but adding an ATP hydrolysis gate to the model in order to force waiting resulted in the model behaving less realistically under load. It is argued here that an RBM model free of gating is a good candidate for explaining kinesin procession.  相似文献

Although human prion diseases are rare, they are invariably fatal, and treatments remain elusive. Hundreds of iatrogenic prion transmissions have occurred in the past two decades, and the bovine spongiform encephalopathy epidemic has raised concerns about prion transmission from cattle to humans. Research into therapeutics for prion disease is being pursued in several centres and prominently includes immunological strategies. Currently, the options that are being explored aim either to mobilize the innate and adaptive immune systems towards prion destruction or to suppress or dedifferentiate the lymphoreticular compartments that replicate prions. This article reviews the pathophysiology of prion diseases in mouse models and discusses their relevance to immunotherapeutic and immunoprophylactic antiprion strategies.  相似文献

Isolation of the pulmonary veins may be an effective treatment modality for eliminating atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes but unfortunately not for all patients. When ablative therapy fails, it is assumed that AF has progressed from a trigger-driven to a substrate-mediated arrhythmia. The effect of radiofrequency ablation on persistent AF can be attributed to various mechanisms, including elimination of the trigger, modification of the arrhythmogenic substrate, interruption of crucial pathways of conduction, atrial debulking, or atrial denervation. This review discusses the possible effects of pulmonary vein isolation on the fibrillatory process and the necessity of cardiac mapping in order to comprehend the mechanisms of AF in the individual patient and to select the optimal treatment modality.  相似文献

There is much evidence that some aspects of ageing are similar to those observed in selective hormone deficiencies during adulthood. Replacement therapy in hypogonadism and/or growth hormone (GH) deficiency in adulthood is very successful in reversing the related clinical symptomatology. However, preliminary studies of GH treatment in the normal elderly have been largely disappointing: an increase in muscle mass is only accompanied by improved muscle strength if exercise is also increased during this period. No real benefit of GH therapy, additional to that of exercise, has been reported. Epidemiological studies indicate a relationship between high-normal insulin-like growth factor-I levels and cancer development. No definitive answers can presently be given regarding the safety of long-term GH therapy in otherwise healthy individuals during the somatopause.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To assess whether, on the basis of one blood test, penicillin allergy might be excluded sufficiently for general practitioners to give oral penicillin to patients claiming a history of penicillin allergy. DESIGN--Prospective study of patients referred by general practitioners. SETTING--Outpatient allergy clinic in a district general hospital. PATIENTS--175 referred patients who gave a history of immediate type reaction to penicillin, of whom 144 attended as requested and 132 completed the investigations. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--History and examination, serum radioallergosorbent test to phenoxymethylpenicillin and benzylpenicillin, and oral challenge with penicillin. RESULTS--Of 132 patients, four were confirmed to have penicillin allergy by the radioallergosorbent test and 128 had an oral penicillin challenge without ill effect. CONCLUSIONS--Most patients who gave a history of penicillin allergy are not so allergic, and their actual allergic state should be substantiated whenever feasible. For patients reporting minor or vague reactions negative findings with a radioallergosorbent test to phenoxymethylpenicillin and benzylpenicillin provide sufficient evidence to give oral penicillin safely.  相似文献
