Changes in the kinetics of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism were studied in 26 highly profiled athletes performing bicycle ergometer exercise. The different intensity exercise sessions included those with a critical intensity corresponding to the maximum oxygen consumption up to value of the maximum anaerobic intensity of about 10 MMR units. The maximal aerobic metabolism was maintained in the exercises with a relative intensity of 1.0 to 2.5 MMR units. At the higher values of the exercise relative intensity, the oxygen current consumption exponentially decreased. An increase in the rate of anaerobic glycolytic energy production, which was first recorded at the threshold of anaerobic metabolism (W AT = 0.5 MMR units), increased linearly with a further increase in the exercise relative intensity up to the level of the exhaustion intensity (W ex = 4.7 MMR units). A sharp increase in the rate of an alactic anaerobic process was found at the relative intensity values of 2.5 MMR units, and this increase grew linearly up to values of the maximal anaerobic intensity (W max = 9.5 MMR units).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of severe acute hypoxia on exercise performance and metabolism during 30-s Wingate tests. Five endurance- (E) and five sprint- (S) trained track cyclists from the Spanish National Team performed 30-s Wingate tests in normoxia and hypoxia (inspired O(2) fraction = 0.10). Oxygen deficit was estimated from submaximal cycling economy tests by use of a nonlinear model. E cyclists showed higher maximal O(2) uptake than S (72 +/- 1 and 62 +/- 2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1), P < 0.05). S cyclists achieved higher peak and mean power output, and 33% larger oxygen deficit than E (P < 0.05). During the Wingate test in normoxia, S relied more on anaerobic energy sources than E (P < 0.05); however, S showed a larger fatigue index in both conditions (P < 0.05). Compared with normoxia, hypoxia lowered O(2) uptake by 16% in E and S (P < 0.05). Peak power output, fatigue index, and exercise femoral vein blood lactate concentration were not altered by hypoxia in any group. Endurance cyclists, unlike S, maintained their mean power output in hypoxia by increasing their anaerobic energy production, as shown by 7% greater oxygen deficit and 11% higher postexercise lactate concentration. In conclusion, performance during 30-s Wingate tests in severe acute hypoxia is maintained or barely reduced owing to the enhancement of the anaerobic energy release. The effect of severe acute hypoxia on supramaximal exercise performance depends on training background.  相似文献

Sustained aerobic exercise not only affects the rate of force development but also decreases peak power development. The aim of this study was to investigate whether anaerobic power of amateur mountain bikers changes during the first half of the competition season. Eight trained cyclists (mean ± SE: age: 22.0 ±0.5 years; height: 174.6 ± 0.9 cm; weight: 70.7 ± 2.6 kg) were subjected to an ergocycle incremental exercise test and to the Wingate test on two occasions: before, and in the middle of the season. After the incremental exercise test the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption was measured during 5-min recovery. Blood lactate concentration was measured in the 4th min after the Wingate test. Maximum oxygen uptake increased from 60.0 ± 1.5 ml min-1 kg-1 at the beginning of the season to 65.2 ± 1.4 ml min-1 kg-1 (P < 0.05) in the season. Neither of the mechanical variables of the Wingate test nor excess post-exercise oxygen consumption values were significantly different in these two measurements. However, blood lactate concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in season (11.0 ± 0.5 mM) than before the season (8.6 ± 0.4 mM). It is concluded that: 1) despite the increase of cyclists’ maximum oxygen uptake during the competition season their anaerobic power did not change; 2) blood lactate concentration measured at the 4th min after the Wingate test does not properly reflect training-induced changes in energy metabolism.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations as well as whole blood β2-adrenoceptor gene (ADRB2) expression in young ice hockey players before and immediately after exercise in relation to performed work. Nineteen Youth National Team ice hockey players were subjected to the maximal incremental cycloergometer exercise. The test was done in the pre-competitive phase of training. Among many parameters the plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations and ADRB2 gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were determined before and after exercise. The average performed work was 3261.3 ± 558.3 J · kg−1 and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) for all players was 53.85 ± 3.91 mL · kg−1 min−1. The geometric mean of the ADRB2 gene expression was statistically significantly different before and after exercise (P ≤ 0.05), while adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in plasma significantly increased after exercise. In the analysed group of athletes we found that initial level of plasma noradrenaline correlated with the performed work (r = - 0.55, P < 0.014) and normalized ADRB2 expression before the exercise correlated with the work done by them (r = 0.48, P<0.039). However, no statistically significant correlations were found between the plasma adrenaline or noradrenaline concentrations and ADRB2 gene expression in peripheral blood of the players. The performed work in the maximal incremental exercise test of regularly training young ice hockey players depends on the initial levels of noradrenaline in plasma and ADRB2 mRNA in PBMC.  相似文献

Objectives: The aim of this study was to test the hypotheses: (1) there is a negative correlation between protein and lipid oxidative damage following maximal-intensity exercise, and oxygen uptake and work intensity (%VO2max) at the respiratory compensation point (RCP) in women and men; (2) nitro-oxidative stress following maximal-intensity exercise results from the intensification of anaerobic processes and muscle fibre micro-damage.

Methods: Study participants comprised 20 women (21.34±1.57 years) and 20 men (21.97±1.41 years) who performed a treadmill incremental test (IT); VO2max: 45.08?±?0.91 and 57.38?±?1.22?mL?kg?1?min?1 for women and men, respectively. The oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) concentration and creatine kinase (CK) as well as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were measured in the blood serum, and total antioxidative capacity (TAC) and lactate concentration (Lac) were determined in blood plasma before and after IT.

Results: After the IT, increases in ox-LDL, 3-NT, CK, and LDH were seen in both groups (P?P?P?Conclusions: The gain of ox-LDL and 3-NT following maximal-intensity exercise is independent of VO2max, oxygen consumption and exercise intensity at RCP. This increase of ox-LDL and 3-NT is indicative of similar lipid and protein damage in women and men. A significant increase in TAC in women following maximal-intensity exercise is the result of muscle fibre micro-injuries.  相似文献

Well-trained subjects (n=6) were studied before and after losing a mean 3.0%–4.3% of body mass to determine whether muscle performance could be maintained or even enhanced by dietary creatine supplementation. During a 5-day period of loss of mass the subjects were randomly assigned to a creatine or placebo supplemented diet. All the subjects were measured before and after loss of mass on both supplements for isokinetic peak torque (PT) and work at peak torque (W PT) of knee extensors, also for intermittent high intensity working capacity of the same muscle group. The latter test consisted of submaximal isokinetic knee extensions at an angular velocity of 1.57 rad · s−1 for 45 s at the rate of 30 contractions each min (submaximal work, W s max ) followed by 15-s maximal effort (maximal work, W max ). Total duration of the test was 3 min. Haematocrit was measured and haemoglobin, ammonia, lactate, glucose and urea concentrations were analysed in blood samples obtained at rest and after cessation of muscle performance tests. The results indicated that creatine supplementation in comparison with placebo treatment during rapid body mass reduction may help to maintain muscle PT and W PT at high angular velocities, not influencing W max and the rate of fatigue development during W max , but affecting adversely W s max . Within the limitations of the present study the reasons for the partially detrimental effect of creatine administration remain obscure, but it is suggested that impaired creatine uptake in muscle during body mass loss as well as creatine induced changes in muscle glucose and glycogen metabolism may be involved. ObjectiveOur objective was to evaluate complex hormonal response in ball game and cyclic sport elite athletes through an incremental treadmill test, since, so far, variables in experimental procedures have often hampered comparisons of data.MethodsWe determined anthropometric data, heart rate, maximal oxygen uptake, workload, plasma levels of lactate, adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, cortisol, angiontensinogen and endothelin in control (n = 6), soccer (n = 8), handball (n = 12), kayaking (n = 9) and triathlon (n = 9) groups based on a Bruce protocol through a maximal exercise type of spiroergometric test.ResultsWe obtained significant increases for adrenaline, 2.9- and 3.9-fold by comparing the normalized means for soccer players and kayakers and soccer players and triathletes after/before test, respectively. For noradrenaline, we observed an even stronger, three-time significant difference between each type of ball game and cyclic sport activity.ConclusionsExercise related adrenaline and noradrenaline changes were more pronounced than dopamine plasma level changes and revealed an opportunity to differentiate cyclic and ball game activities and control group upon these parameters. Normalization of concentration ratios of the monitored compounds by the corresponding maximal oxygen uptake reflected better the differences in the response level of adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and cortisol.  相似文献

Seventeen male physical education students performed three types of treadmill exercise: (1) progressive exercise to exhaustion, (2) prolonged exercise of 50 min duration at the anaerobic threshold of 4 mmol . l-1 blood lactate (AE), (3) a single bout of short-term high-intensity exercise at 156% of maximal exercise capacity in the progressive test, leading to exhaustion within 1.5 min (ANE). Immediately before and after ANE and before, during, and after AE adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone, cortisol, insulin, testosterone, and oestradiol were determined in venous blood, and glucose and lactate were determined in arterialized blood from the earlobe. Adrenaline and noradrenaline increased 15 fold during ANE and 3--4 fold and 6--9 fold respectively during AE. The adrenaline/noradrenaline ratio was 1 : 3 during ANE and 1 : 10 during AE. Cortisol increased by 35% in ANE (12% of which appeared in the postexercise period) and 54% in AE. Insulin increased during ANE but decreased during AE. Testosterone and oestradiol increased by 14% and 16% during ANE and by 22% and 28% during AE. The results point to a markedly higher emotional stress and higher sympatho-adrenal activity in anaerobic exercise. Growth hormone and cortisol appear to be the more affected by intense prolonged exercise. Taking plasma volume changes and changes of metabolic clearance rates into consideration, neither of the exercise tests appeared to affect secretion of testosterone and oestradiol.  相似文献

Objective

To describe different end criteria for reaching maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) during a continuous graded exercise test on the treadmill, and to explore the manner by which different end criteria have an impact on the magnitude of the VO2max result.

Methods

A sample of 861 individuals (390 women) aged 20–85 years performed an exercise test on a treadmill until exhaustion. Gas exchange, heart rate, blood lactate concentration and Borg Scale6–20 rating were measured, and the impact of different end criteria on VO2max was studied;VO2 leveling off, maximal heart rate (HRmax), different levels of respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and postexercise blood lactate concentration.

Results

Eight hundred and four healthy participants (93%) fulfilled the exercise test until voluntary exhaustion. There were no sex-related differences in HRmax, RER, or Borg Scale rating, whereas blood lactate concentration was 18% lower in women (P<0.001). Forty-two percent of the participants achieved a plateau in VO2; these individuals had 5% higher ventilation (P = 0.033), 4% higher RER (P<0.001), and 5% higher blood lactate concentration (P = 0.047) compared with participants who did not reach a VO2 plateau. When using RER ≥1.15 or blood lactate concentration ≥8.0 mmol•L–1, VO2max was 4% (P = 0.012) and 10% greater (P<0.001), respectively. A blood lactate concentration ≥8.0 mmol•L–1 excluded 63% of the participants in the 50–85-year-old cohort.

Conclusions

A range of typical end criteria are presented in a random sample of subjects aged 20–85 years. The choice of end criteria will have an impact on the number of the participants as well as the VO2max outcome. Suggestions for new recommendations are given.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate criteria for maximal effort in middle-aged men and women undertaking a maximal exercise test until they were exhausted if no measurements of oxygen uptake are made. A large group of 2164 men and 975 women, all active in sports and aged between 40 and 65 years, volunteered for a medical examination including a progressive exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. In the 3rd min of recovery a venous blood sample was taken to determine the plasma lactate concentration ([la]p, 3min). Lactate concentration and maximal heart rate (f c, max) were lower in the women than in the men (P<0.001). Multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the contribution of sex to [la]p, 3 min, independent of age and f c max, It was found that [la]p,3 min was about 2.5 mmol·l–1 lower in women than in men of the same age and f c, max. In our population 88% of the men and 85% of the women met a combination of the following f c, max and [la]p, 3min criteria: f c, max equal to or greater than 220 minus age beats·min–1 and/or [la]p, 3min equal to or greater than 8 mmol·l–1 in the men and f c, max equal to or greater than 220 minus age beats·min–1 and/or [la]p, 3min equal to or greater than 5.5 mmol·1–1 in the women.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the Wingate cycling and Bosco repeated jumps anaerobic tests. Eleven men (21.36 +/- 1.6 years; 179.1 +/- 9.3 cm; 78.7 +/- 11.0 kg) and 9 women (21.89 +/- 3.66 years; 171.8 +/- 10.0 cm; 75.9 +/- 21.4 kg), all university athletes, volunteered to participate. Subjects performed each test in random order. The tests consisted of a 30-second Wingate test and a 60-second Bosco test. The Wingate test was conducted using a Monark cycle ergometer and the Bosco test was conducted on a force platform. Following the performance of each test, peak lactate concentrations were determined. Average and peak power values were statistically greater in men and on the Bosco test. Peak lactate values were statistically greater in men but did not differ based on test. Correlations between peak lactate concentrations between tests and lactate values with peak or average power were not statistically significant. The relationship between peak power between tests was statistically significant among men, but not women. The results of the study indicated that the Bosco and Wingate tests, which both measure anaerobic characteristics, appear to measure different aspects of anaerobic power and capacity. The Bosco test also may be inappropriate for athletes who are not well trained in jumping.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the difference in peak blood ammonia concentration between sprinters and long-distance runners in submaximal, maximal and supramaximal exercise. Five sprinters and six long-distance runners performed cycle ergometer exercise at 50% maximal, 75% maximal, maximal and supramaximal heart rates. Blood ammonia and lactate were measured at 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 min after each exercise. Peak blood ammonia concentration at an exercise intensity producing 50% maximal heart rate was found to be significantly higher compared to the basal level in sprinters (P less than 0.01) and in long-distance runners (P less than 0.01). The peak blood ammonia concentration of sprinters was greater in supra-maximal exercise than in maximal exercise (P less than 0.05), while there was no significant difference in long-distance runners. The peak blood ammonia content after supramaximal exercise was higher in sprinters compared with long-distance runners (P less than 0.01). There was a significant relationship between peak blood ammonia and lactate after exercise in sprinters and in long-distance runners. These results suggest that peak blood ammonia concentration after supramaximal exercise may be increased by the recruitment of fast-twitch muscle fibres and/or by anaerobic training, and that the processes of blood ammonia and lactate production during exercise may be strongly linked in sprinters and long-distance runners.  相似文献

Sex-related differences of catecholamine responses were evaluated in nine healthy women and six age-matched men at rest and during incremental treadmill exercise. Heart rate, oxygen uptake (VO2), glucose and lactate blood levels as well as the free plasma catecholamines, noradrenaline and adrenaline, were determined. No significant differences were observed for these parameters between the two groups at rest. The females had relative VO2max and maximal running velocities similar to the males, which points to a comparable dynamic performance ability. However, at identical work loads, noradrenaline, adrenaline and glucose levels were significantly higher in women than in men. Lactate, heart rate and relative VO2 showed a similar tendency at submaximal exercise levels, indicating higher strain at identical stress levels in women. The reason for the higher sympathetic activity in women at identical work loads may be their relatively smaller skeletal muscle mass in relation to the loads during this test.  相似文献

The mechanical power (Wtot, W·kg–1) developed during ten revolutions of all-out periods of cycle ergometer exercise (4–9 s) was measured every 5–6 min in six subjects from rest or from a baseline of constant aerobic exercise [50%–80% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)] of 20–40 min duration. The oxygen uptake [VO2 (W·kg–1, 1 ml O2 = 20.9 J)] and venous blood lactate concentration ([la]b, mM) were also measured every 15 s and 2 min, respectively. During the first all-out period, Wtot decreased linearly with the intensity of the priming exercise (Wtot = 11.9–0.25·VO2). After the first all-out period (i greater than 5–6 min), and if the exercise intensity was less than 60% VO2max, Wtot, VO2 and [la]b remained constant until the end of the exercise. For exercise intensities greater than 60% VO2max, VO2 and [la]b showed continuous upward drifts and Wtot continued decreasing. Under these conditions, the rate of decrease of Wtot was linearly related to the rate of increase of V [(d Wtot/dt) (W·kg–1·s–1) = 5.0·10–5 –0.20·(d VO2/dt) (W·kg–1·s–1)] and this was linearly related to the rate of increase of [la]b [(d VO2/dt) (W·kg–1·s–1) = 2.310–4 + 5.910–5·(d [la]b/dt) (mM·s–1)]. These findings would suggest that the decrease of Wtot during the first all-out period was due to the decay of phosphocreatine concentration in the exercising muscles occurring at the onset of exercise and the slow drifts of VO2 (upwards) and of Wtot (downwards) during intense exercise at constant Wtot could be attributed to the continuous accumulation of lactate in the blood (and in the working muscles).  相似文献

Objective: To explore sex differences in the regulation of lipolysis during exercise, the lipid‐mobilizing mechanisms in the subcutaneous adipose tissue (SCAT) of overweight men and women were studied using microdialysis. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects matched for age, BMI, and physical fitness performed two 30‐minute exercise bouts in a randomized fashion: the first test at 30% and 50% of their individual maximal oxygen uptake (Vo 2max) and the second test at 30% and 70% of their Vo 2max. Results: In both groups, an exercise‐dependent increment in extracellular glycerol concentration (EGC) was observed. Whatever the intensity, phentolamine [α‐adrenergic receptor (AR) antagonist] added to a dialysis probe potentiated exercise‐induced lipolysis only in men. In a probe containing phentolamine plus propranolol (β‐AR antagonist), no changes in EGC occurred when compared with the control probe when exercise was performed at 30% and 50% Vo 2max. A significant reduction of EGC (when compared with the control probe) was observed in women at 70% Vo 2max. At each exercise power, the plasma non‐esterified fatty acid and glycerol concentrations were higher in women. Exercise‐induced increase in plasma catecholamine levels was lower in women compared with men. Plasma insulin decreased and atrial natriuretic peptide increased similarly in both groups. Discussion: Overweight women mobilize more lipids (assessed by glycerol) than men during exercise. α2‐Anti‐lipolytic effect was functional in SCAT of men only. The major finding is that during low‐to‐moderate exercise periods (30% and 50% Vo 2max), lipid mobilization in SCAT relies less on catecholamine‐dependent stimulation of β‐ARs than on an increase in plasma atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations and the decrease in plasma insulin.  相似文献

During incremental exercise, the left ventricular ejection fraction increases up to the intensity of the anaerobic threshold and tends to level off at higher exercise intensities. Since there is a correlation between the response of peak filling rate and ejection fraction to exercise, this study was conducted to determine whether the response of left ventricular diastolic function is similar to the response of systolic function relative to lactate threshold. Twelve healthy men performed two exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. In the first test, lactate threshold and maximal power output were determined. In the second exercise test, gated radionuclide ventriculography was performed at rest, at the lactate threshold intensity, and at peak exercise to measure ejection fraction and peak filling rate. Ejection fraction increased significantly from rest [mean (SD): 62 (5)%] to lactate threshold [76 (7) %] and did not change significantly from lactate threshold to peak exercise [77 (7)%]. Likewise, peak filling rate (normalized for stroke counts) increased from resting [6.1 (0.9)V s · s–1] to lactate threshold [9.4 (1.8)V s · s–1] and did not change significantly from lactate threshold to peak exercise [9.6 (2.9)V s · s–1]. There was no correlation between the change in peak filling rate and the change in ejection fraction from rest to lactate threshold. Thus, during incremental exercise, left ventricular diastolic function responds qualitatively similar to systolic function.  相似文献

The influence of training status on the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) was used to assess the validity of the MAOD method during supramaximal all-out cycle exercise. Sprint trained (ST; n = 6), endurance trained (ET; n = 8), and active untrained controls (UT; n = 8) completed a 90 s all-out variable resistance test on a modified Monark cycle ergometer. Pretests included the determination of peak oxygen uptake ( O2peak) and a series (5–8) of 5-min discontinuous rides at submaximal exercise intensities. The regression of steady-state oxygen uptake on power output to establish individual efficiency relationships was extrapolated to determine the theoretical oxygen cost of the supramaximal power output achieved in the 90 s all-out test. Total work output in 90 s was significantly greater in the trained groups (P<0.05), although no differences existed between ET and ST. Anaerobic capacity, as assessed by MAOD, was larger in ST compared to ET and UT. While the relative contributions of the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems were not significantly different among the groups, ET were able to achieve significantly more aerobic work than the other two groups, while ST were able to achieve significantly more anaerobic work. Peak power and peak pedalling rate were significantly higher in ST. The results suggested that MAOD determined during all-out exercise was sensitive to training status and provided a useful assessment of anaerobic capacity. In our study sprint training, compared with endurance training, appeared to enhance significantly power output and high intensity performance over brief periods (up to 60 s), yet few overall differences in performance (i.e. total work) existed during 90 s of all-out exercise.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to investigate the physiological responses and, in particular, the participation of lactic acid anaerobic metabolism in aerobic dance, which is claimed to be pure aerobic exercise. In contrast to previous studies, that have put subjects in very unfamiliar situations, the parameters were monitored in the familiar context of gymnasium, practice routine and habitual instructor. A group of 30 skilled fairly well-trained women performed their usual routine,␣a combination of the two styles: low (LI) and high impact (HI), and were continuously monitored for heart rate (HR) and every 8 min for blood lactate concentration ([La]b). Of the group, 15 were tested to determine their maximal aerobic power (O2max) using a cycleergometer. They were also monitored during the routine for oxygen uptake (O2) by a light telemetric apparatus. The oxygen pulses of the routine and of the corresponding exercise intensity in the incremental test were not statistically different. The mean values in the exercise session were: peak HR 92.8 (SD 7.8)% of the subject's maximal theoretical value, peak O2 99.5 (SD 12.4)% of O2max, maximal [La]b 6.1 (SD 1.7) mmol · l−l, and mean 4.8 (SD 1.3) mmol · l−l. Repeated measures ANOVA found statistically significant differences between the increasing [La]b values (P < 0.001). In particular, the difference between the [La]b values at the end of the mainly LI phase and those of the LI-HI combination phase, and the difference between the samples during the combination LI-HI phase were both statistically significant (both P= 0.002 and P= 0.002). The similar oxygen pulses confirmed the validity of the present experiment design and the reliability of HR monitoring in this activity. The HR, O2 and, above all, the increase of [La]b to quite high values, showing a non steady state, demonstrated the high metabolic demand made by this activity that involved lactic acid metabolism at a much higher level than expected. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between the characteristics of anaerobic exercise in the upper limb and important indicators of growth and developmental age such as height (h), body mass (m b), skeletal age (SA), plasma testosterone (T) and pubertal stage (PS). We used the force-velocity (F-) relationship test in a population of 66 healthy adolescent male junior jockeys, with considerable variation in these indicators but of the same physical fitness level (training effect). The mean values of the maximal anaerobic power (W an,max) were 391 (SD 93) W. The values of the variables in the F- relationship for the upper limb were only slightly or uncorrelated with the chronological age, but highly correlated with h, m b and SA (P<0.001). The correlation with T was less significant. Using ANOVA a highly significant effect of PS on the variables in the F- relationship was found (P<0.001). The absolute or relative (normalized to m b) increase in W an,max during puberty was greater from PS P2 and P3 than at other stages. Therefore PS would appear to be a significant factor for developmental changes in anaerobic characteristics during puberty in the adolescent. The PS P3 determined only by public hair might be an easy and accurate indicator for sports category classification of adolescents during puberty  相似文献

Sex differences in running economy (gross oxygen cost of running, CR), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic threshold (Than), percentage utilization of aerobic power (% VO2max), and Than during running were investigated. There were six men and six women aged 20–30 years with a performance time of 2 h 40 min over the marathon distance. The VO2max, Than, and CR were measured during controlled running on a treadmill at 1° and 3° gradient. From each subject's recorded time of running in the marathon, the average speed (v M) was calculated and maintained during the treadmill running for 11 min. The VO2 max was inversely related to body mass (m b), there were no sex differences, and the mean values of the reduced exponent were 0.65 for women and 0.81 for men. These results indicate that for running the unit ml·kg–0.75·min–1 is convenient when comparing individuals with different m b. The VO2max was about 10% (23 ml·kg–0.75·min–1) higher in the men than in the women. The women had on the average 10–12 ml·kg–0.75·min–1 lower VO2 than the men when running at comparable velocities. Disregarding sex, the mean value of CR was 0.211 (SEM 0.005) ml·kg–1·m–1 (resting included), and was independent of treadmill speed. No sex differences in Than expressed as % VO2max or percentage maximal heart rate were found, but Than expressed as VO2 in ml·kg–0.75·min–1 was significantly higher in the men compared to the women. The percentage utilization of f emax and concentration of blood lactate at v M was higher for the female runners. The women ran 2 days more each week than the men over the first 4 months during the half year preceding the marathon race. It was concluded that the higher VO2max and Than in the men was compensated for by more running, superior CR, and a higher exercise intensity during the race in the performance-matched female marathon runners.  相似文献
