Background: Although the BMI is widely used as a measure of adiposity, it is a measure of excess weight, and its association with body fatness may differ across racial or ethnic groups. Objective: To determine whether differences in body fatness between white, black, Hispanic, and Asian children vary by BMI‐for‐age, and whether the accuracy of overweight (BMI‐for‐age ≥ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 95th percentile) as an indicator of excess adiposity varies by race/ethnicity. Methods and Procedures: Total body dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) provided estimates of %body fat among 1,104 healthy 5‐ to 18‐year‐olds. Results: At equivalent levels of BMI‐for‐age, black children had less (mean, 3%) body fatness than white children, and Asian girls had slightly higher (1%) levels of %body fat than white girls. These differences, however, varied by BMI‐for‐age, with the excess body fatness of Asians evident only among relatively thin children. The ability of overweight to identify girls with excess body fatness also varied by race/ethnicity. Of the girls with excess body fatness, 89% (24/27) of black girls, but only 50% (8/16) of Asian girls, were overweight (P = 0.03). Furthermore, the proportion of overweight girls who had excess body fatness varied from 62% (8/13) among Asians to 100% (13/13) among whites. Discussion: There are racial or ethnic differences in body fatness among children, but these differences vary by BMI‐for‐age. If race/ethnicity differences in body fatness among adults also vary by BMI, it may be difficult to develop race‐specific BMI cut points to identify equivalent levels of %body fat.  相似文献

We examine the effect of food prices on clinical measures of obesity, including body mass index (BMI) and percentage body fat (PBF) measures derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), among youths ages 12 through 18 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This is the first study to consider clinically measured levels of body composition rather than BMI to investigate the effects of food prices on obesity outcomes among youths classified by gender and race/ethnicity. Our findings suggest that increases in the real price per calorie of food for home consumption and the real price of fast-food restaurant food lead to improvements in obesity outcomes among youths. We also find that a rise in the real price of fruits and vegetables leads to increased obesity. Finally, our results indicate that measures of PBF derived from BIA and DXA are no less sensitive and in some cases more sensitive to the prices just mentioned than BMI, and serve an important role in demonstrating that rising food prices (except fruit and vegetable prices) are indeed associated with reductions in obesity rather than with reductions in body size proportions alone.  相似文献

The body adiposity index (BAI; hip circumference (cm)/height (m)(1.5) - 18) has recently been shown to demonstrate a stronger correlation with percentage body fat (%fat) than that between the BMI and %fat in Mexican-American adults. Here, we compare the concordance between %fat from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and BAI, and between %fat and BMI, in European-American adults (n = 623). Agreement between BAI, BMI, and %fat was assessed using Lin's concordance coefficients (ρ(c)), where values <0.90 are considered poor. In the sample as a whole, the agreement between BAI and %fat (ρ(c) = 0.752) was far better than that between BMI and %fat (ρ(c) = 0.445) but was nonetheless relatively poor. There were large mean differences in %fat between the BAI and DXA %fat, particularly at lower levels of adiposity (<20%), and further the BAI overestimated %fat in males and underestimated %fat in females. Optimizing the BAI formula for our sample only marginally improved performance. Results of the present study show that BAI provides a better indicator of adiposity in European-American adults than does BMI, but does not provide valid estimates of %fat, particularly at lower levels of body fatness. Further research is warranted to investigate the predictive ability of BAI for various health outcomes.  相似文献

Human obesity is a growing epidemic throughout the world. Body mass index (BMI) is commonly used as a good indicator of obesity. Body adiposity index (BAI = hip circumference (cm)/stature (m)1.5 ? 18), as a new surrogate measure, has been proposed recently as an alternative to BMI. This study, for the first time, compares BMI and BAI for predicting percent body fat (PBF; estimated from skinfolds) in a sample of 302 Buryat adults (148 men and 154 women) living in China. The BMI and BAI were strongly correlated with PBF in both men and women. The correlation coefficient between BMI and PBF was higher than that between BAI and PBF for both sexes. For the linear regression analysis, BMI better predicted PBF in both men and women; the variation around the regression lines for each sex was greater for BAI comparisons. For the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the area under the ROC curve for BMI was higher than that for BAI for each sex, which suggests that the discriminatory capacity of the BMI is higher than the one of BAI. Taken together, we conclude that BMI is a more reliable indicator of PBF derived from skinfold thickness in adult Buryats. Objective: To examine associations between eating frequency (EF) and body fatness in pre‐ and postmenopausal women, after excluding potential low‐energy reporters. Research Methods and Procedures: In this cross‐sectional study of 220 free‐living women, 64 pre‐ and 50 postmenopausal non‐low‐energy‐reporting women were further analyzed (age, 24 to 74 years; BMI, 18.5 to 38.6 kg/m2). Anthropometric and body composition measurements (DXA) were performed in all study participants. EF, energy, and macronutrient intake were assessed by 3‐day food record. Physical activity level and energy expenditure were assessed by self‐reported questionnaire. Results: No association between EF and adiposity indices was detected in premenopausal women. In contrast, EF was positively correlated with percentage body fat in postmenopausal women (r = 0.30, p = 0.03). EF was positively correlated with total energy intake in both groups and with total energy expenditure in premenopausal women only (r = 0.34, p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis revealed that, in postmenopausal women, EF was a significant predictor of body fatness (standardized β = 0.41, p = 0.01). Discussion: Frequent eating was not found to be related to adiposity in premenopausal women, but it was associated with increased body fat in postmenopausal women. Possible explanations could be that the frequent eating is not associated with a physically active lifestyle in postmenopausal women or that frequent eating predisposes women after menopause to a higher energy intake by increasing food stimuli and rendering it more difficult for them to control energy balance.  相似文献

Lower serum concentrations of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) are associated with increased risk for several obesity-related diseases in women including hormone-sensitive cancers, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Previous investigations have reported that body composition, specifically central obesity, and/or higher insulin concentrations are key factors associated with lower SHBG in overweight and obese women; however, these studies were limited by their cross-sectional design. We hypothesized that intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT), a fat depot linked with an abnormal metabolic profile, is inversely and independently associated with SHBG. Therefore, we determined the longitudinal associations among SHBG, insulin, and IAAT in 107 premenopausal women enrolled in a weight loss study. Overweight (BMI 27-30 kg/m(2)) women were weight reduced until BMI of ≤ 24 was achieved. Body composition and IAAT were measured at baseline and after weight loss with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography, respectively. Serum concentrations of insulin and SHBG were determined. Paired t-test showed that insulin and IAAT decreased significantly and SHBG increased significantly following weight loss (P < 0.0001 for all). Simple correlations from baseline showed no association with insulin and SHBG (r = -0.142, P = 0.143) and a significant inverse association between IAAT and SHBG (r = -0.43, P < 0.0001). Repeated measures mixed-model showed that after adjusting for age and time (weight loss), IAAT was significantly inversely associated with SHBG (P = 0.0002) and there was no association with insulin and SHBG (P = 0.180). We conclude that SHBG concentrations are influenced by IAAT and not insulin in premenopausal women.  相似文献

It has been widely assumed that for a given BMI, Asians have higher percent body fat (PBF) than whites, and that the BMI threshold for defining obesity in Asians should be lower than the threshold for whites. This study sought to test this assumption by comparing the PBF between US white and Vietnamese women. The study was designed as a comparative cross‐sectional investigation. In the first study, 210 Vietnamese women ages between 50 and 85 were randomly selected from various districts in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). In the second study, 419 women of the same age range were randomly selected from the Rancho Bernardo Study (San Diego, CA). In both studies, lean mass (LM) and fat mass (FM) were measured by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) (QDR 4500; Hologic). PBF was derived as FM over body weight. Compared with Vietnamese women, white women had much more FM (24.8 ± 8.1 kg vs. 18.8 ± 4.9 kg; P < 0.0001) and greater PBF (36.4 ± 6.5% vs. 35.0 ± 6.2%; P = 0.012). However, there was no significant difference in PBF between the two groups after matching for BMI (35.1 ± 6.2% vs. 35.0 ± 5.7%; P = 0.87) or for age and BMI (35.6 ± 5.1% vs. 35.8 ± 5.9%; P = 0.79). Using the criteria of BMI ≥30, 19% of US white women and 5% of Vietnamese women were classified as obese. Approximately 54% of US white women and 53% of Vietnamese women had their PBF >35% (P = 0.80). Although white women had greater BMI, body weight, and FM than Vietnamese women, their PBF was virtually identical. Further research is required to derive a more appropriate BMI threshold for defining obesity for Asian women.  相似文献

BackgroundThe burden of obesity in Vietnam has not been well defined because there is a lack of reference data for percent body fat (PBF) in Asians. This study sought to define the relationship between PBF and body mass index (BMI) in the Vietnamese population.MethodsThe study was designed as a comparative cross-sectional investigation that involved 1217 individuals of Vietnamese background (862 women) aged 20 years and older (average age 47 yr) who were randomly selected from the general population in Ho Chi Minh City. Lean mass (LM) and fat mass (FM) were measured by DXA (Hologic QDR 4500). PBF was derived as FM over body weight.ResultsBased on BMI ≥30, the prevalence of obesity was 1.1% and 1.3% for men and women, respectively. The prevalence of overweight and obesity combined (BMI ≥25) was ~24% and ~19% in men and women, respectively. Based on the quadratic relationship between BMI and PBF, the approximate PBF corresponding to the BMI threshold of 30 (obese) was 30.5 in men and 41 in women. Using the criteria of PBF >30 in men and PBF >40 in women, approximately 15% of men and women were considered obese.ConclusionThese data suggest that body mass index underestimates the prevalence of obesity. We suggest that a PBF >30 in men or PBF >40 in women is used as criteria for the diagnosis of obesity in Vietnamese adults. Using these criteria, 15% of Vietnamese adults in Ho Chi Minh City was considered obese.  相似文献

Even though BMI is the most commonly used method for assessing and monitoring obesity, it does not take into account the individual's body fat content assuming instead that body mass is closely associated with body fat, which is a tenuous assumption. The aim of this study was to make a direct comparison between measurements of body fat content using a convenient and rapid Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). We recruited 52, premenopausal women (age range 19-45), all of whom had a BMI that classified them as either overweight or obese (range: 27-40 kg/m(2), mean: 31.1 ± 3.7 kg/m(2)) and indicated a statistically significant linear relationship between the fat content in kilograms measured by FT-NIR and DXA (r = 0.95, P < 0.001). Bland-Altman analysis showed that almost all the differences between two measurements fell within 2 s.d. We report here that the FT-NIR method provided comparable measurements of subcutaneous body fat content similar to those of total fat obtained using DXA. The FT-NIR method is a lower cost, easy to use and transport, and, based on comparison with DXA, an accurate method to measure body fat content. We propose that FT-NIR is an ideal method for safe repeat measurements in large trials or in screening and monitoring individuals during interventions in which changes in body fat will occur.  相似文献

Background

Limited data have indicated that body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) of athletes and young adults provide misleading results concerning body fat content. This study was aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between different surrogate indices of fatness (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR and body adiposity index (BAI)) with the percentage of body fat in Polish students with respect to their sex and physical activity.

Methods

A total of 272 students volunteered to participate in the study. Of these students, 177 physical education students (90 males and 87 females) were accepted as active (physical activity of 7 to 9 hours/week); and 95 students of other specializations (49 males and 46 females) were accepted as sedentary (physical activity of 1.5 hours/week). Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured, and BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were calculated. Body fat percentage was assessed using four skinfold measurements.

Results

Classification of fatness according to the BMI and the percentage of body fat have indicated that BMI overestimates fatness in lean subjects (active men and women, sedentary men), but underestimates body fat in obese subjects (sedentary women). In all groups, BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were significantly correlated with the percentage of body fat (with the exception of WHR and hip circumference in active and sedentary women, respectively). However, coefficients of determination not exceeding 50% and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients lower than 0.9 indicated no relationship between measured and calculated body fat.

Conclusion

The findings in the present study support the concept that irrespective of physical activity and sex none of the calculated indices of fatness are useful in the determination of body fat in young adults. Thus, it seems that easily calculated indices may contribute to distorted body image and unhealthy dietary habits observed in many young adults in Western countries, but also in female athletes.  相似文献

BMI is the preferred measure of adiposity in adolescents. Recent evidence suggests that in adults the relationship between BMI and adiposity can vary by age and race/ethnicity. We investigated the relationship between BMI and percent body fat (%BF) in a large multi-ethnic, nationally representative sample of US adolescents (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, NHANES, 1999-2004). BMI was calculated; %BF was derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry data and compared to BMI among adolescents from three groups: non-Hispanic white (NHW), non-Hispanic black (NHB), and Mexican-American (MA). Fractional polynomials were used to model a new equation to estimate %BF from a given BMI. MA boys weighed significantly less than either NHW or NHB boys, while only NHB girls weighed significantly more than the other girls. Among the boys there were no differences in mean BMI, whereas %BF differed significantly between all three groups. For the girls, both BMI and %BF differed significantly the groups with MA girls having the highest %BF. The significant correlates for modeling %BF from BMI included gender, age, race/ethnicity, weight, [formula in text]: the final model explained 79% of the variance in %BF. NHB adolescents had significantly lower %BF for BMI and MA had higher than NHW. Our results indicate that BMI may not be an equivalent measure of %BF in a multi-ethnic population of US adolescents.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine sex and race differences in the relationship between anthropometric measurements and adiposity in white and African-American (AA) adults. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) areas were measured with computed tomography (CT). Fat mass (FM) was measured with dual-energy-X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationship of waist circumference (WC) and BMI to VAT, SAT, and FM within sex-by-race groups. General linear models were used to compare relationships between WC or BMI, and adiposity across sex and race, within age groups (18-39 and 40-64 years). The sample included 1,667 adults (men: 489 white; 120 AA; women: 666 white, 392 AA). WC and BMI correlations were highest for FM and SAT compared to VAT. Women had higher FM levels than men regardless of WC, but the sex difference in FM was attenuated in younger AA adults with a high BMI. For a given level of WC or BMI, women had higher levels of SAT than men; however, significant interactions indicated that the relationship was not consistent across all levels of BMI and WC. Sex and race differences in VAT varied significantly with WC and BMI. In general, white adults had higher levels of VAT than AA adults at higher levels of BMI and WC. Sex differences, and in some instances race differences, in the relationships between anthropometry and fat-specific depots demonstrate that these characteristics need to be considered when predicting adiposity from WC or BMI.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of body fat percentage (BF%) on female attractiveness. To this end, a series of female body images were selected from a collection of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans. Images were stratified by three levels (low, mid, and high) of waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and seven levels (15%–50%) of BF%. These 21 images were presented in a random order and rated for attractiveness. Results indicate that WHR, BMI, and BF% are all significant predictors of female attractiveness when regressed separately (R2= 0.19, 0.70, and 0.76, respectively). When regressed simultaneously, all three variables accounted for 87% of the variance in image attractiveness, with only BF% and WHR being significant predictors. Further analysis revealed that body fat might disrupt the negative linear relationship between WHR and attractiveness. Men and women differed significantly in most categories of WHR and BF%, with men generally rating images as less attractive than women. These data indicate that BF% appears to be a strong cue for attractiveness and that the impact of WHR and BMI on attractiveness is dependent, in part, on BF%. The appearance of body fat may provide disruption in the visual cues of both shape and size of the female body, potentially impacting behavior.  相似文献

Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) is quick, easy, and safe when quantifying fat and lean tissue. New BIA models (Tanita BC-418 MA, abbreviated BIA(8)) can perform segmental body composition analysis, e.g., estimate %trunkal fatness (%TF). It is not known, however, whether new BIA models can detect metabolic risk factors (MRFs) better than older models (Tanita TBF-300, abbreviated BIA(4)). We therefore tested the correlation between MRF and percentage whole-body fat (%BF) from BIA(4) and BIA(8) and compared these with the correlation between MRF and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA, used as gold standard), BMI and waist circumference (WC). The sample consisted of 136 abdominally obese (WC >or= 88 cm), middle-aged (30-60 years) women. MRF included fasting blood glucose and insulin; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides; high sensitive C-reactive protein, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and fibrinogen; and alanine transaminase (ALT) liver enzyme. We found that similar to DXA, but in contrast to BMI, neither %BF BIA(4) nor %BF BIA(8) correlated with blood lipids or ALT. In the segmental analysis of %TF, BIA(8) only correlated with inflammatory markers, but not insulin, blood lipids, or ALT liver enzyme (in contrast to WC and %TF DXA). %TF DXA was associated with homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) independently of WC (P = 0.03), whereas %TF BIA(8) was not (P = 0.53). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves confirmed that %TF BIA(8) did not differ from chance in the detection of insulin resistance (P = 0.26). BIA estimates of fatness were, at best, weakly correlated with obesity-related risk factors in abdominally obese women, even the new eight-electrode model. Our data support the continued use of WC and BMI.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to validate noninvasive models, retrieved from the literature, estimating body fat in white women. The cohort used for the validation consisted of 277 postmenopausal women, and the reference method was dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Five models were retrieved containing anthropometric measurements such as bicep and tricep skinfolds, waist circumference (WC), height, and body weight. Models including only BMI were found to be less biased and more valid than others including skinfolds and circumferences. The model by Visser et al., estimating body density (BD = 0.0226 × sex - 0.0022 × BMI + 1.0605) with the subsequent use of Brozek's (and not Siri's) equation to estimate body fat percentage (%BF), was found to be more valid than the other models for this cohort. In conclusion, it seems that Visser's et al. model, including only BMI, with Brozek's equation, is a fast, noninvasive, and valid method to assess body composition in white postmenopausal women in clinical practice and research.  相似文献

Body fat distribution and abdominal fatness are indicators of risks for coronary heart disease. However, the relationships between resting energy expenditure (REE) and the body fat distribution or the abdominal fatness are unclear. We examined the relationships of REE with whole-body fat distribution (waist, hip and waist-to-hip ratio: WHR) and abdominal fatness (intra-abdominal fat: IF and subcutaneous fat: SF) after adjustment for body composition. 451 men and 471 women were subdivided into two groups, 40-59 years: middle-aged group and 60-79 years: elderly group. REE was measured by an indirect calorimetry system. Percentage of fat mass (%FM), fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) were assessed by a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry method. The IF area (IFA) and SF area (SFA) at the level of the umbilicus were measured using computed tomography. Circumference of waist and hip were measured in a standing position. The WHR, waist circumference and SFA did not significantly (p>0.05) associate with the REE after adjusting for FM, FFM and age in any of the groups. The adjusted REE was significantly and inversely correlated with hip (r=-0.159, p<0.05) and IFA (r=-0.131, p<0.05) in the elderly men. These results suggest that lower REE may contribute to greater hip and IFA rather than WHR and waist in elderly men.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and body composition and to estimate the genetic contribution of sleep duration and body composition in a Chinese twin population. This cross-sectional analysis included 738 men and 511 women aged 21-72 year. Anthropometric and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures of body composition were used. Sleep duration was obtained from a standard sleep questionnaire. Multiple regression models were used to examine the association between sleep duration and body composition measures. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the heritability of sleep duration and body composition. Compared with individuals in the 2nd and 3rd age-specific quartiles of sleep duration (reference group), shorter (1st quartile) sleep duration among women but not men was associated with higher z-scores (0.248-0.317) for all adiposity measures--BMI, fat mass index (FMI), percent body fat mass (%BF), and percent trunk fat mass (%TF), P < 0.05 for each--and with 0.306 lower z-scores for percent body lean mass (%LM) and 0.353 lower lean/fat mass ratio (LFR), P < 0.01 for each. The heritability of sleep duration was 0.27 in men and 0.29 in women, while the heritability of body composition was as high as 0.56-0.73 after adjustment for age in both genders. Short sleep duration was associated with increased body fat and decreased lean body mass in women but not in men. Sleep duration was largely influenced by environmental factors while adiposity measures were mainly influenced by genetic factors.  相似文献

To examine the associations between birth weight and BMI, and total body composition, in overweight Latino adolescents. Two hundred and forty-two overweight Latino children (baseline age = 11.1 +/- 1.7 years; BMI >or= 85th percentile) were measured annually for up to 6 years (2.6 +/- 1.4 observations/child, total 848 visits). Birth weight and history of gestational diabetes were obtained by parental interview. Visceral fat and subcutaneous abdominal fat were assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, while total body fat, total lean tissue mass (LTM), trunk fat, and lean tissue trunk mass were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. BMI and BMI percentile were calculated using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention age appropriate cutoffs. Longitudinal linear mixed effects (LME) modeling was used to evaluate the influence of birth weight on subsequent changes in body composition and distribution of fat across puberty. Birth weight significantly predicted BMI (P < 0.001), total trunk fat (P < 0.001), total trunk LTM (P < 0.001), total fat mass (FM) (P < 0.001), and total LTM (P < 0.001), but not subcutaneous (P = 0.534) or visceral fat (P = 0.593) at age 11 years. Longitudinally, as participants transitioned into puberty, birth weight did not significantly predict any of the body composition or fat distribution measures (P > 0.05). Birth weight is significantly associated with increased adiposity and LTM and negatively associated with trunk fat mass and trunk lean mass at baseline; however these relationships did not predict rate of change of any of the variables as the children progress through adolescence.  相似文献

Based on cell culture and studies in mice, increased dietary calcium appears to stimulate lipolysis and could possibly reduce body adiposity through hormonal influences on adipocyte calcium uptake. In this study, we investigated the effects of 1,500 mg supplemental calcium daily for 3 months on hormones regulating calcium and energy metabolism and rates of lipid oxidation and lipolysis in overweight women. Fifteen overweight (BMI > 25 kg/m(2)) premenopausal women were supplemented with 1,500 mg of calcium, as CaCO(3), per day for 3 months while maintaining their usual diets and activity levels. Baseline and endpoint measurements were obtained after the subjects consumed a standardized 25% fat diet for 4 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by indirect calorimetry, lipolysis by infusion of deuterated glycerol, and body fat by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Urinary calcium, circulating levels of hormones involved in energy and lipid metabolism (insulin, leptin, and adiponectin) or calcium metabolism (25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)(2)D), and parathyroid hormone (PTH)) were also measured. Urinary levels of calcium (P = 0.005) increased and 1,25(OH)(2)D declined (P = 0.03). However other parameters, including body weight, body fat, PTH, insulin, leptin, adiponectin, 25(OH)D, as well as rates of lipid oxidation and lipolysis were not altered by calcium supplementation. Adipose tissue levels and human obesity are known to be associated with increased heat production. At the same time, subcutaneous adipose tissue provides an insulating layer that impedes heat loss. The energy implications of obesity and body thermoregulatory mechanisms remain relatively poorly understood. This study attempted to examine the potential relationship between body composition (subcutaneous and visceral fat) determined by bioimpedance as well as BMI (body mass index), and skin surface temperature distribution recorded at rest.One specific aim of this study was to draw a thermal map of body areas in obese women and compare this with women of normal body mass, and thus to identify body regions within which heat transfer is particularly impeded. As high fat content is a good insulator, it could reduce the body‘s ability to respond effectively to changes in environmental temperature, which would be problematic for thermal homeostasis. Our results showed that core temperature did not differ between obese and normal body mass participants, while skin temperature of most body surfaces was lower in obese subjects.The results of regression analysis showed that the mean body surface temperature (Tmean) decreased with increasing percentage of body fat (PBF) of the abdominal area. The opposite relationship was observed for the front area of the hand (simultaneous increase in Tmean and PBF). We also found a negative correlation between BMI and Tmean of the thigh areas, both the front and the back. From this it could be concluded that the mean body surface temperature is dependent on body fat.  相似文献
