Broiler manure produced at large concentrated facilities poses risks to the quality of water and public health. This study utilizes broiler litter and cake as source materials for granular activated carbon production and optimizes conditions for their production. Pelletized manure samples were pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C for 1 h followed by activation in an inert atmosphere under steam at different water flow rates, for a period ranging from 15 to 75 min. Carbon physical and adsorptive properties were dependent on activation time and quantity of steam used as activant, yields varied from 18% to 28%, surface area varied from 253 to 548 m2/g and copper ion adsorption varied from 0.13 to 1.92 mmol Cu2+/g carbon. Best overall performing carbons were steam activated for 45 min at 3 ml/min. Comparative studies with commercial carbons revealed the broiler cake-based carbon as having the highest copper ion efficiency.  相似文献

Representative samples of soft, low density, group 1 (rice straw, rice hulls, sugarcane bagasse) and hard, high density, group 2 agricultural by-products (pecan shells) were converted into granular activated carbons (GACs). GACs were produced from group 1 and 2 materials by physical activation or from group 2 materials by chemical activation. Carbons were evaluated for their physical (hardness, bulk density), chemical (ash, conductivity, pH), surface (total surface area), and adsorption properties (molasses color removal, sugar decolorization) and compared with two commercial reference carbons. The results show that the type of by-product, binder, and activation method determine the properties of GACs. Regardless of the binder, sugarcane bagasse showed a better potential than rice straw or rice hulls as precursor of GACs with the desirable properties of a sugar decolorizing carbon. Pecan shells produced GACs that were closest to the reference carbons in terms of all the properties investigated.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate selected physical and chemical properties of agricultural byproduct-based activated carbons made from pecan shells and sugarcane bagasse, and compare those properties to a commercial coal-based activated carbon as well as to compare the adsorption efficiency of these carbons for geosmin. Comparison of the physical and chemical properties of pecan shell- and bagasse-based carbons to the commercial carbon, Calgon Filtrasorb 400, showed that pecan shell carbon, but not the bagasse carbon, compared favorably to Filtrasorb 400, especially in terms of surface area, bulk density, ash and attrition. A carbon dosage study done in a model system showed the amount of geosmin adsorbed to be greater for Filtrasorb 400 and the bagasse-based carbon at low carbon concentrations than for the pecan shell carbons, but geosmin adsorption was similar in all carbons at higher carbon dosages. Application of the Freundlich isotherm model to the adsorption data showed that carbons made by steam activation of pecan shells or sugarcane bagasse had geosmin adsorption characteristics most like those of the commercial carbon. In terms of physical, chemical and adsorptive properties, steam-activated pecan shell carbon most resembled the commercial carbon and has the potential to replace Filtrasorb 400 in applications involving removal of geosmin from aqueous environments.  相似文献

A series of phosphoric-acid activated carbons were made from almond shells using six different activation or activation/oxidation methods. The carbons were compared to each other and to two commercial carbons in an effort to ascertain the relative value of the carbons in terms of yield, surface area, attrition, surface functional groups, organic uptake, metal uptake, as well as estimated cost of production. Of the six methods investigated, the method that produced the best overall performing almond shell carbon and least expensive carbon in terms of production cost was the “Air-Activation” method. This method involved the simultaneous activation and oxidation of almond shells under an air atmosphere.  相似文献

Granular activated carbons (GACs) were produced from sugarcane bagasse combined with one of two binders (corn syrup, coal tar) by physical activation and from pecan shells by physical and chemical activation. GACs were evaluated for their physical (hardness, bulk density), chemical (ash, pH), surface (surface area, pore size distribution, surface chemistry), and adsorption properties (molasses color removal, sugar decolorization) and compared with two commercial reference carbons. Results showed that larger surface area, a well-developed macro- and mesoporosity, and a minimal surface charge were desirable in GACs designed for sugar decolorization. Steam activation of pecan shells carbon was the only by-product-activation combination that produced GAC with all the above three desirable characteristics of a good sugar decolorizer. Chemical activation of pecan shells yielded GACs with high surface area and adequate pore size distribution but with large surface charge. In contrast, sugarcane bagasse-based GACs exhibited low surface areas and unsatisfactory physical/chemical properties.  相似文献

Metagenomic libraries herald the era of magnifying the microbial world, tapping into the vast metabolic potential of uncultivated microbes, and enhancing the rate of discovery of novel genes and pathways. In this paper, we describe a method that facilitates the extraction of metagenomic DNA from activated sludge of an industrial wastewater treatment plant and its use in mining the metagenome via library construction. The efficiency of this method was demonstrated by the large representation of the bacterial genome in the constructed metagenomic libraries and by the functional clones obtained. The BAC library represented 95.6 times the bacterial genome, while, the pUC library represented 41.7 times the bacterial genome. Twelve clones in the BAC library demonstrated lipolytic activity, while four clones demonstrated dioxygenase activity. Four clones in pUC library tested positive for cellulase activity. This method, using FTA cards, not only can be used for library construction, but can also store the metagenome at room temperature.  相似文献

Proportions of clay and silt increase and those of sand and gravel decrease with depth in fish ponds. Highest concentrations of nitrogen and organic matter and lowest concentrations of phosphorus were found in muds from deeper waters. Cation exchange capacity of muds increased with depth while pH of muds decreased with depth. Relationships between water depth and characteristics of muds should be considered to reduce bias when sampling pond muds.  相似文献

Summary An in vitro brain slice preparation of the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of weakly electric fish was developed. The morphology of this slice was studied and revealed that most ELL neurons and synapses retained their normal appearance for at least 10 h in vitro. The electrophysiological characteristics of the main ELL output neurons, the pyramidal cells, were measured. Extracellular electrode recordings demonstrated that pyramidal cells are capable of spontaneous, rhythmic spike activity. Intracellular recordings showed that intrinsic oscillations in membrane potential underlie the bursting behavior. The majority of pyramidal cells respond to depolarizing current pulses with an initial lag in spike firing followed by a non-accommodating, higher frequency spike train.Time and voltage-dependent properties of pyramidal cell responsiveness, as well as the effects of pharmacological blocking agents indicated that rhythmic activity and repetitive firing are dominated by a persistent, subthreshold sodium conductance (gNa) which activates at depolarized levels and is the driving force behind the membrane potential oscillations and the sustained (non-accommodating) spike firing. In addition, a transient, outward potassium conductance (gA) is responsible for the lag in spike firing by acting as a brake during the initial 50–200 ms of a depolarizing stimulus.Calcium currents and calcium-dependent potassium conductance add to the interval between spontaneous bursts but appear insufficient for spike frequency accommodation.The in vitro behaviour of pyramidal cells differs substantially from the behaviour of the same cell type in vivo. A simple and convenient procedure for chemoselectively protecting the amino groups of chitosan has been developed to provide N-phthaloyl-chitosan that is indispensable as a soluble N-protected precursor for further controlled modification reactions of chitosan. Although the conventional N-phthaloylation of chitosan in N,N-dimethylformamide was accompanied by partial phthaloylation of the hydroxy groups, the addition of a small amount of hydroxy-containing compounds effectively suppressed the O-phthaloylation. Of some compounds examined, water proved particularly suitable, resulting in the formation of chemoselectively N-phthaloylated chitosan without any appreciable O-phthaloyl groups. The resulting N-phthaloyl-chitosan was found to be crystalline despite the presence of a bulky substituent. A solubility test indicated that N-phthaloyl-chitosan exhibited considerable affinity for organic solvents.  相似文献

In this study, contributions of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin to the mass and the porous properties of chars and activated carbons from various lignocellulosic materials were studied. A predictive calculation was established using the experimental results obtained for the three components separately to evaluate the carbonization and activation yields and their respective contributions to the chars and to the subsequent activated carbons of various precursors in term of weight fraction. These equations were validated. The results showed that lignin can be considering as being the major contributor of all chars and activated carbons. Besides, the evolution of the mean pore size versus the specific porous volume showed that each component contributes to the porosity of chars and activated carbons whatever is its weight contribution.  相似文献

AIMS: The isolation and characterization of a novel coffee-associated Bacillus mojavensis strain, designated as strain AB1, and its survival on the coffee phyllosphere. METHODS AND RESULTS: A pair of 16S rDNA primers was designed to amplify a highly variable region within the 16S rDNA gene of Bacillus spp., with the purpose of identifying the AB1 isolate through PCR and sequence analysis. By this method, AB1 was identified as a strain of B. mojavensis. Bioassays were carried out to characterize the broad spectrum antifungal activity of AB1. Plant colonization studies revealed that AB1 could colonize the coffee phyllosphere better than Bacillus thuringiensis. CONCLUSIONS: These studies suggest that AB1 could be a new strain of B. mojavensis. AB1 is also shown to have antifungal activity against a wide spectrum of pathogenic fungi. The antifungal metabolite of AB1 has been partially characterized as a thermostable, protease- and alkali-resistant substance that is secreted into the surrounding medium. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: As far as is known, this is the first strain of B. mojavensis which has been identified as inhabiting the coffee phyllosphere. The study highlights the potential use of AB1 as an antifungal agent in the coffee crop and as a delivery agent of the insecticidal toxin of B. thuringiensis to the coffee phyllosphere. The 16S rRNA identification strategy discussed could also be used in the identification of other new Bacillus strains.  相似文献

As a new precursor, [bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehydato)tin(II)]; ([Sn(HNA)2]), complex was used in thermal decomposition process for the synthesis of tin oxide (SnO2) nanoclusters. The steric hindrance of the precursor raises the need of using co-surfactant, therefore oleylamine (C18H37N) was applied as the only surfactant of the reaction. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Also the novel precursor was thermal treated in solid-state reaction in different temperature, 400, 500, and 600 °C. Synthesized tin dioxide nanoclusters with tetragonal phase, have average size of 1.5-4 nm. Finally, optical properties of the products were examined and investigated by photoluminescence spectra.  相似文献

The removal of a widespread used drug (i.e., ibuprofen) from water was investigated using high valuable carbon adsorbents obtained from chemical and physical activation of a bioresource (cork) and a municipal waste (plastic). The waste-derived carbons outperformed the adsorption capacity of commercial carbonaceous adsorbents due to their adequate features for the removal of the targeted compound. Regarding the adsorption mechanism, the results obtained point out that ibuprofen retention is favored in activated carbons with basic surface properties. On the other hand, the textural features also play an important role; the presence of a transport pores network (i.e., mesopores) is crucial to ensure the accessibility to the inner porosity, and the microporosity must be large enough to accommodate the ibuprofen molecule. Specifically, adsorbents with a large fraction of ultramicropores (pore widths <0.7 nm) are not adequate to effectively remove ibuprofen.  相似文献

AIMS: The work is intended to achieve optimum culture conditions of alpha-galactosidase production by a mutant strain Penicillium sp. in solid-state fermentation (SSF). METHODS AND RESULTS: Certain fermentation parameters involving incubation temperature, moisture content, initial pH value, inoculum and load size of medium, and incubation time were investigated separately. The optimal temperature and moisture level for alpha-galactosidase biosynthesis was found to be 30 degrees C and 50%, respectively. The range of pH 5.5-6.5 was favourable. About 40-50 g of medium in 250-ml flask and inoculum over 1.0 x 10(6) spores were suitable for enzyme production. Seventy-five hours of incubation was enough for maximum alpha-galactosidase production. Substrate as wheat bran supplemented with soyabean meal and beet pulp markedly improved the enzyme yield in trays. CONCLUSIONS: Under optimum culture conditions, the alpha-galactosidase activity from Penicillium sp. MAFIC-6 indicated 185.2 U g(-1) in tray of SSF. SIGNIFICANT AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The process on alpha-galactosidase production in laboratory scale may have a potentiality of scaling-up.  相似文献

The high nuclearity zinc complex, Zn6(OAc)8(μ-OH)2(dmae)2(dmaeH)2 (1) (OAc = acetate and dmaeH = N,N′-dimethylaminoethanol), having a low decomposition temperature and sufficiently high solubility in non-polar solvents, was synthesized by a simple chemical technique in high yield and analyzed by melting point, elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography and thermal analysis. Aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique was used to deposit a high-quality thin film with good adhesion to the glass substrate at relatively low temperature (320 °C). Scanning electron microscopy of the film shows clearly distinct crystallites of uniform shape with 2.4-2.9 μm size. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements have indicated the deposition of a crystalline phase of hexagonal ZnO with space group P63mc.  相似文献
