The abundance of the predatory gastropod, the Far East dogwhelk Nucella heyseana in the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan was assessed by applying the mark and recapture technique with reverse sampling. It was shown that assessment of mollusk abundance using this approach did not differ significantly from that resulting from the frame technique. It was determined that the number of the dogwhelks decreased in recent years in the surveyed area. In implementing long-term research, including the seasonal dynamics of the number of N. heyseana and other mollusk species similar to it in their biology and behavior, we suggest applying, concurrently with the mark and recapture technique, other methods, enabling one to obtain more adequate figures of their numbers in the cold season.  相似文献

Synopsis Plasma calcium and magnesium concentrations in perch,Perca fluviatilis, were monitored in an acid lake, Lake Iso Tenhetty (pH ∼5, Al concentrations 0.3–0.5 mg l-1) compared with a nearby reference lake, Lake P?ij?nne, in Southern Finland. The effect of acid stress could be noticed as 1/3 lower fecundity of perch in the acid lake. Plasma Ca concentrations were temporarily lower in the middle of the winter in the fish of the acid lake, and in April–May samples the situation was opposite. Plasma Mg concentration was also lower in the perch from the acid lake in midwinter months, when compared with the double as high values (∼3 mmol l-1) from the reference lake. Elevated level of plasma Mg have been reported for fish in cold acclimation especially in winter. Thus overwintering may be specially stressing for some specimens in acid waters. Also ova did contain clearly less magnesium in the midwinter sample from the acid lake perch compared with the reference lake sample. This difference, however, was no more to be found later in spring. Mg content in the ova of perch was in both cases high, which may be necessary to the breeding in comparable acid waters. According to the literature fish cannot increase their magnesium content directly from the water. Mortality for the reference lake embryos was lower than those of the acid lake when incubated in the acid lake. No physiological acclimation inside the fish could be demonstrated in this case.  相似文献

Summary The regression of atretic oocytes in Perca fluviatilis was studied by histochemical, light and electron microscopic methods. The course of regression can be divided into three stages, the first two comprising the dissolution of the atretic oocyte and its phagocytosis by the granulosa cells of the follicular epithelium, and the third stage consisting of the dissolution of the granulosa cells themselves. The ultrastructure in all three stages shows only features related to phagocytosis and lysosome formation. In particular, there is no agranular endoplasmic reticulum formed within the phagocytically active granulosa cells, nor is there any 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity (3-HSD). Large yellow-orange pigments, formed during the third stage of regression, are ascribed to a relative deficiency of lysosomes in lipid digestion, and do not result from a preceeding steroid-synthesising phase as in mammalian corpora lutea. Thus, the atretic oocyte of P. fluviatilis is considered not to give rise to a corpus luteum formation with endocrine function, but merely represents a degenerative structure.  相似文献

Sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum L) from four different geographic locations in Sierra Leone were sampled for their mycoflora. Three toxigenic Aspergillus species: A. flavus Link ex Fries, A. ochraceus Wilhelm, and A. tamarii Kita were common to all samples. Penicillium citrinum Thom and two Fusarium sp. were found in samples from two localities. The mycotoxins aflatoxin B1 and G1, ochratoxin A and B, and citrinin were positively identified.  相似文献

Synopsis A model describing evacuation of multiple meals in fishes is experimentally tested. It is shown that the total food quantity is evacuated according to the pattern and at the rate predicted by the model. The mathematical assumption inherent in the model is, however, erroneous as the evacuation of different meals is shown to occur at different rates. The consequences of this for studies of food consumption rates in fishes are discussed.  相似文献

Gill net catches of perch Perca fluviatilis in eight acidified lakes immediately before liming are compared] with catches in the same lakes two years after liming. Simultaneously, six control lakes, not limed, were investigated with the same procedures. A significant increase in the average catches of perch was found in the limed lakes, but not in the control lakes. This result confirms earlier reports, although seldom supported with data from controls, on successful recovery after liming.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The validity of treating counts as indices to abundance is based on the assumption that the expected detection probability, E(p), is constant over time or comparison groups or, more realistically, that variation in p is small relative to variation in population size that investigators seek to detect. Unfortunately, reliable estimates of E(p) and var(p) are lacking for most index methods. As a case study, we applied the time‐of‐detection method to temporally replicated (within season) aural counts of crowing male Ring‐necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) at 18 sites in southern Minnesota in 2007 to evaluate the detectability assumptions. More specifically, we used the time‐of‐detection method to estimate E(p) and var(p), and then used these estimates in a Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate bias‐variance tradeoffs associated with adjusting count indices for imperfect detection. The estimated mean detection probability in our case study was 0.533 (SE = 0.030) and estimated spatial variation in E(p) was 0.081 (95% CI: 0.057–0.126). On average, both adjusted (for) and unadjusted counts of crowing males qualitatively described the simulated relationship between pheasant abundance and grassland abundance, but the bias‐variance tradeoff was smaller for adjusted counts (MSE = 0.003 vs. 0.045, respectively). Our case study supports the general recommendation to use, whenever feasible, formal population‐estimation procedures (e.g., mark‐recapture, distance sampling, double sampling) to account for imperfect detection. However, we caution that interpreting estimates of absolute abundance can be complicated, even if formal estimation methods are used. For example, the time‐of‐detection method was useful for evaluating detectability assumptions in our case study and the method could be used to adjust aural count indices for imperfect detection. Conversely, using the time‐of‐detection method to estimate absolute abundances in our case study was problematic because the biological populations and sampling coverage could not be clearly delineated. These estimation and inference challenges may also be important in other avian surveys that involve mobile species (whose home ranges may overlap several sampling sites), temporally replicated counts, and inexact sampling coverage.  相似文献

Life history traits of Daphnia galeata clones were affected differently by kairomones exuded by two species of fish. The exposure to Gasterosteus kairomone resulted in an increase in population intrinsic rate of increase and body growth rate relative to the exposure to Perca kairomone. These differences between fish treatments have not been reported earlier. The results suggest differences between fish kairomones that are not due to concentration effects alone. This raises the possibility that kairomones are cocktails of chemicals rather than a single `fish substance'. It also supports the view the effects of size-selective predation vary depending on the local predator–prey assemblage examined. This finding leads to an additional, previously underestimated but potentially complex aspect in zooplankton ecology.  相似文献

I investigated if risk-taking behaviour of young-of-the-year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis was connected with population-specific predation patterns in four lakes in northern Sweden. The lakes differ in perch size distribution, according to earlier fishing surveys. Thus, the most intense predation pressure by cannibals is assumed to occur at different prey-size windows in the four lakes. In an aquarium study, I observed groups of perch, and registered time spent foraging in an open habitat and number of prey attacks in the presence of a predator. Perch from Ängersjön, with the highest proportion of large fish in the population, spent more time in the open area than those from Fisksjön that has a dense population of mainly small perch. The Ängersjön perch also made more prey attacks than did perch from Fisksjön and Bjännsjön. Relative differences in predation risk in the four lakes were estimated as cannibalistic attack rates, on a range of sizes of YOY perch, calculated from population size distributions. Principal component analysis on predation risk patterns resulted in two components, of which PC1 explained 79.1% of the variation. High scores of PC1 indicated low cannibalistic attack rates on smaller perch (10–20 mm) and high rates on larger fish (≥30 mm), while low scores indicated the opposite. The level of risk-taking behaviour in the aquarium study positively correlated with lake-specific PC1 scores. The perch with the most cautious behaviour in the aquaria originated from the population with the highest predation pressure on early stages. The boldest perch came from the lake with low predation on the smallest, but with higher predation on larger YOY perch. Thus, the influence of predation risk on behaviour patterns in perch may depend on the timing of the highest exposure to predators.  相似文献

Estimates of range‐wide abundance, harvest, and harvest rate are fundamental for sound inferences about the role of exploitation in the dynamics of free‐ranging wildlife populations, but reliability of existing survey methods for abundance estimation is rarely assessed using alternative approaches. North American mallard populations have been surveyed each spring since 1955 using internationally coordinated aerial surveys, but population size can also be estimated with Lincoln's method using banding and harvest data. We estimated late summer population size of adult and juvenile male and female mallards in western, midcontinent, and eastern North America using Lincoln's method of dividing (i) total estimated harvest, , by estimated harvest rate, , calculated as (ii) direct band recovery rate, , divided by the (iii) band reporting rate, . Our goal was to compare estimates based on Lincoln's method with traditional estimates based on aerial surveys. Lincoln estimates of adult males and females alive in the period June–September were 4.0 (range: 2.5–5.9), 1.8 (range: 0.6–3.0), and 1.8 (range: 1.3–2.7) times larger than respective aerial survey estimates for the western, midcontinent, and eastern mallard populations, and the two population estimates were only modestly correlated with each other (western: = 0.70, 1993–2011; midcontinent: = 0.54, 1961–2011; eastern: = 0.50, 1993–2011). Higher Lincoln estimates are predictable given that the geographic scope of inference from Lincoln estimates is the entire population range, whereas sampling frames for aerial surveys are incomplete. Although each estimation method has a number of important potential biases, our review suggests that underestimation of total population size by aerial surveys is the most likely explanation. In addition to providing measures of total abundance, Lincoln's method provides estimates of fecundity and population sex ratio and could be used in integrated population models to provide greater insights about population dynamics and management of North American mallards and most other harvested species.  相似文献

The pollination syndrome hypothesis has provided a major conceptual framework for how plants and pollinators interact. However, the assumption of specialization in pollination systems and the reliability of floral traits in predicting the main pollinators have been questioned recently. In addition, the relationship between ecological and evolutionary specialization in pollination interactions is still poorly understood. We used data of 62 plant species from three communities across southern Norway to test: (1) the relationships between floral traits and the identity of pollinators, (2) the association between floral traits (evolutionary specialization) and ecological generalization, and (3) the consistency of both relationships across communities. Floral traits significantly affected the identity of pollinators in the three communities in a way consistent with the predictions derived from the pollination syndrome concept. However, hover flies and butterflies visited flowers with different shapes in different communities, which we mainly attribute to among-community variation in pollinator assemblages. Interestingly, ecological generalization depended more on the community-context (i.e. the plant and pollinator assemblages in the communities) than on specific floral traits. While open yellow and white flowers were the most generalist in two communities, they were the most specialist in the alpine community. Our results warn against the use of single measures of ecological generalization to question the pollination syndrome concept, and highlight the importance of community comparisons to assess the pollination syndromes, and to understand the relationships between ecological and evolutionary specialization in plant-pollinator interactions.  相似文献

Size variation among individuals born at the same time in a common environment (within cohorts) is a common phenomenon in natural populations. Still, the mechanisms behind the development of such variation and its consequences for population processes are far from clear. We experimentally investigated the development of early within-cohort size variation in larval perch (Perca fluviatilis). Specifically we tested the influence of initial variation, resulting from variation in egg strand size, and intraspecific density for the development of size variation. Variation in egg strand size translated into variation in initial larval size and time of hatching, which, in turn, had effects on growth and development. Perch from the smallest egg strands performed on average equally well independent of density, whereas larvae originating from larger egg strands performed less well under high densities. We related this difference in density dependence to size asymmetries in competitive abilities leading to higher growth rates of groups consisting of initially small individuals under high resource limitation. In contrast, within a single group of larvae, smaller individuals grew substantially slower under high densities whereas large individuals performed equally well independent of density. As a result, size variation among individuals within groups (i.e. originating from the same clutch) increased under high densities. This result may be explained by social interactions or differential timing of diet shifts and a depressed resource base for the initially smaller individuals. It is concluded that to fully appreciate the effects of density-dependent processes on individual size variation and size-dependent growth, consumer feedbacks on resources need to be considered.  相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of larval and juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were studied for two years in large, deep Lake Constance. After hatching larvae were transported by water currents to the open water. The majority of larvae remained in the pelagic zone for about one month. In both years, their return to the littoral zone coincided with the decline of pelagic zooplankton abundance. After returning to the littoral zone, juveniles stayed among submerged macrophytes within 5 m depth and lived apart from larger perch which lived at depths of 6–20 m. By late summer, juveniles changed their distribution pattern: during the day they stayed intensively close to piers and ports, but increased their swimming activity at dusk, cruising among shallow and deep waters and feeding on zooplankton, and rested on the bottom at night. This behaviour appears to be related to the decrease of inshore food resources and to the presence of predators in deeper water. 0+ perch left the littoral zone and moved into deep waters when autumnal mixing began in late October. They overwintered near the bottom at depths of more than 30 m. During most of the year, juvenile and adult perch were separated from each other. But as soon as they occupied the same habitat, the occurrence of cannibalism increased.  相似文献

Summary Two laminae composed of smooth muscles, elastic tissue and collagen have been described in relation with the gill skeleton in Perca fluviatilis. A transverse smoothmuscle lamina joins the base of the cartilage rods of the two opposite hemibranchs. A longitudinal smooth-muscle lamina runs parallel to the afferent branchial artery and joins the cartilage rods from one filament to the other. In both laminae, the formaldehyde-induced fluorescence technique (Falck-Hillarp) reveals a network of nerve fibers displaying a green fluorescence characteristic of catecholamines. At the ultrastructural level, the presence of nerve endings containing clear and granular vesicles, and the degeneration of these endings after 6-hydroxydopamine treatment confirm the aminergic nature and the sympathetic origin of this innervation. Surgical denervation brings evidence that the innervation of both laminae is supplied by the metatrematic branches of the branchial nerves. The role of these smooth-muscle laminae remains speculative.  相似文献

The horizontal movement patterns of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were studied by means of an automatic positioning system in a small Mediterranean temperate lake in northeastern Spain. Seven perch (247–265 mm in fork length, 243–271 g in weight) were implanted surgically with ultrasonic transmitters (38 mm long, 3.5 g in water) and their positions monitored approximately every 180 s using a radio-linked acoustic positioning (VRAP) system. Fish positions were integrated into a geographic information system database with information on date, time, slope and bottom depth. As a measure of the intensity of movement, the swimming speed was calculated. The Minimum Convex Polygon area was obtained as a measure of the area of activity. The data dispersion was calculated as r 2 (the mean squared distance from the center of activity). The tagged perch showed individual variations in activity levels, but all had a circadian pattern, being less active at night (average speed 6.0 cm s–1) than during the day (average speed 10.4 cm s–1). They exhibited two peaks of activity, at sunrise and sunset. Two patterns of movement emerged, the first characterised by movement between the limnetic and the littoral zones, the second restricted to the shoreline. Fish appeared to follow the same path, reducing the area of activity to a limited part of the lake. Also, fish returned to the same place after movements, showing site fidelity but only for a few days. Overall, although perch could be very abundant in open waters (limnetic zone), they demonstrated a high dependence on the littoral zone.  相似文献

An analysis of the diet of 0+ perch, smelt and roach caught at night of the pelagial of a mesotrophic lake showed that their food was composed mainly of herbivorous and predatory cladocerans, copepods and Chaoborus larvae during summer, and of herbivorous cladocerans and copepods during October. An analysis of habitat use by juveniles revealed separation among the species: roach occurred in the upper, perch and smelt in the deeper water layers. Food and habitat were alternatively partitioned among the juveniles. In early summer the lowest food overlap between perch and smelt coincided with high habitat overlap. In October high food overlap between perch and smelt corresponded with low habitat overlap. Smelt and roach fry used common food resources throughout the season, but they were segregated in habitat.  相似文献

The foraging efficiency of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis), feeding on two types of prey, was studied in laboratory experiments. Waterfleas (Daphnia magna) and phantom midge larvae (Chaoborus flavicans) were offered in a range of densities, either separately or combined. Perch fed more efficiently on each prey type separately than when both were mixed. Foraging efficiency decreased with an increase of mixed prey density with both prey types present in equal numbers, but also when the proportion of Chaoborus increased. This could be caused by the existence of different hunting techniques, each of which is fully efficient in the presence of one prey type only. In the presence of two prey types, the predator constantly has to switch from one hunting technique to another.  相似文献

Four fishing periods within a yearly cycle between 1990 and 1991 were carried out in the lake-reservoir of Mirgenbach, lake of the nuclear power station in Cattenom (Moselle, France). The catches of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were analyzed.In all, about 630 perch were caught in 8 sampling stations. The analysis of seasonal catches of this carnivorous fish was made according to size and mesh; a simple correspondence factor analysis enabled us to establish that this species lived in different areas depending on the season.  相似文献
