SAME-DIFFERENT DISCRIMINATION TESTS WITH INTERSTIMULUS DELAYS UP TO ONE DAY   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are many ways in which a laboratory difference test differs from 'real life'discrimination of foods. One of these is the interval of time between tasting the two stimuli to be discriminated. To investigate this, Cubero et al. (1995) investigated interstimulus delays of up to 1 min. for the same-different test, using a citrus flavored beverage as a medium. The present study extended this research by increasing the interstimulus delays up to 1 day. For judges unfamiliar with the stimuli, performance deteriorated as the time interval increased. For judges more familiar with the stimuli, performance deteriorated but not as much. The results were compatible with Cubero et al.'s hypothesis that different types of memory trace for the first (standard) stimulus were utilized for comparison with the second (comparison) stimulus.  相似文献

Using a simultaneous discrimination procedure it was shown that pigeons were capable of learning to discriminate 100 different black and white visual patterns from a further 625 similar stimuli, where responses to the former were rewarded and responses to the latter were not rewarded. Tests in which novel stimuli replaced either the rewarded or nonrewarded stimuli showed that the pigeons had not only learned about the 100 positive stimuli but also about the 625 negative stimuli. The fact that novel stimuli enhanced discrimination performance when they replaced the many negative stimuli indicated that the pigeons had categorized the stimuli into two classes, familiar and less familiar. Long-term retention was examined after a 6-month interval. To begin with it seemed poor but a recognition test performed after the subjects had been retrained with a subset of the stimuli after an interval of 7 months confirmed that pigeons are capable of retaining in memory several 100 visual items over an extended period. It is proposed that the initial retrieval weakness was due to a forgetting of the contingencies between stimulus categories and response outcomes. Further tests involving variously modified stimuli indicated that while stimulus size variations had a negative effect on performance, orientation changes did not interfere with recognition, supporting the view that small visual stimuli are memorized by pigeons largely free of orientation labels. The experiment generally confirms that pigeons have the capacity of storing information about a large number of visual stimuli over long periods of time.  相似文献

In previous experiments two extreme modes of visual discrimination performance have been investigated by measuring small differences in pattern shape at points along a continuum of pattern shapes. These two modes, associated with discrete and continuous encoding processes, were obtained by simultaneously manipulating the number of pattern components in the display and the effective duration of the display. In this experiment, discrimination performance was measured for a fixed number of pattern components, namely three, and variable display time course. The stimuli used were curved lines drawn from a continuum with curvature parameter s. There were three stimulus time courses: (1) 2-s stimulus display, (2) 100-ms stimulus display, and (3) 100-ms stimulus display followed by a post-stimulus mask. Discrimination performance declined smoothly and monotonically with s for (1), but varied non-monotonically with s revealing a central peak for (3). Performance for (2) was intermediate between that for (1) and that for (3). A reduction in effective stimulus duration alone was thus sufficient to cause a transition from continuous to discrete modes of discrimination performance, a result which may be compatible with an explanation of variable discrimination modes based on a method of successive internal approximations of the stimulus.  相似文献

Pigeons' responses were recorded in successive 15-s subintervals of 60-s components of several multiple variable-interval schedules of food reinforcement. In the standard multiple schedule or successive discrimination, discriminative stimuli were present throughout each component. In the delayed discrimination or memory procedure, red or green stimuli were present in the first 15 s of components and were followed by a white stimulus for the remainder of both components. Ratios of responses in the first 15 s of the two components, where discriminative stimuli were present, were sensitive to ratios of reinforcers obtained in the two components, to the same extent in both multiple and memory procedures. In both procedures, sensitivity to reinforcement decreased systematically over component subintervals, but to a greater extent in the memory procedure where discriminative stimuli were absent. The reduction in sensitivity with time since presentation of prior discriminative stimuli in the memory procedure was therefore influenced by two main factors: delayed stimulus control by the discriminative stimuli presented earlier in the component, and a decrease in sensitivity to reinforcement with increasing time since component alternation.  相似文献

Superparasitism avoidance by the endoparasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani Perez on the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae was studied. Experiments were carried out in which aphids were exposed to two consecutive attacks by parasitoids. Results showed that superparasitism avoidance in A. rhopalosiphi was mediated by two successive stimuli whose effectiveness depended on the time interval between attacks. For short time intervals (<16 h), host rejections were mainly associated with the presence of dried cornicle secretion on the host's body which was exuded during the first attack. The repellency of this secretion declined with the time interval between attacks, becoming ineffective 2 days after the first parasitization, and allowed females to reject up to 30% of parasitized hosts. For longer time intervals (>/=16 h), host rejection behavior was a response of parasitoid females to internal changes in host quality associated with parasite development. This response gradually increased with an increase in time interval, reaching no more than 60%, 96 h after initial parasitization. This host discrimination ability did not allow females to distinguish between hosts parasitized by themselves or by conspecifics. Consequently, these findings suggest that superparasitism is a common event in A. rhopalosiphi and especially on recently parasitized hosts.  相似文献

Spatial interval discrimination in the presence of flanking lines   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Spatial interval discrimination was studied in the absence or presence of distractors. In the latter case, two flanking lines surrounded two vertical lines delimiting the spatial interval. Using a temporal 2AFC technique with a method of constant stimuli we measured the accuracy of performance (discrimination thresholds) and biases (points of subjective equality) depending on the separations between the target and the flanking lines. For separations less than or comparable to the size of the spatial interval we found both a reduction of precision and the increase of perceived sizes of the spatial intervals: the discrimination thresholds were increased, the size of the spatial interval was overestimated. For larger separations, the size of the spatial interval was underestimated, but the precision of performance was not affected by the presence of flanking lines. We discuss the possible mechanisms underlying spatial interval discrimination in the presence of flanking lines.  相似文献

An interval bisection procedure was used to study time discrimination in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), which have been proposed as an animal model for the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); Wistar Kyoto and Wistar rats were used as comparison groups. In this procedure, after subjects learn to make one response (S) following a short duration stimulus, and another (L) following a long duration stimulus, stimuli of intermediate durations are presented, and the percentage of L is calculated for each duration. A logistic function is fitted to these data, and different parameters that describe the time discrimination process are obtained. Four conditions, with different short and long durations (1-4, 2-8, 3-12, 4-16s) were used. The results indicate that time discrimination is not altered in SHR, given that no difference in any of the parameters obtained were significant. Given that temporal processing has been proposed as a fundamental factor in the development of the main symptoms of ADHD, and that deficits in time discrimination have been found in individuals with that disorder, the present results suggest the necessity of exploring time perception in SHR with other procedures and sensory modalities, in order to assess its validity as an animal model of ADHD.  相似文献

The dynamics of the cortical evoked activity in the process of learning of time microintervals (10, 60 and 180 ms) discrimination was studied in healthy adults. Feedback stimulus visually informing of the real correlations of the differentiated pauses facilitates the discrimination. The factor of the visual field does not affect the estimation of brief time intervals. At correct identifications, the P300 wave is recorded with a higher amplitude, than at errors. In the trial following the "nonconfirming" feedback stimulus, the standard and test stimuli evoke in the left hemisphere a greater P300 wave, than in the trial after the "confirming" stimulus. Feedback influence is retained in the long-term memory.  相似文献

Memory for sweet taste intensities in different media during 125 h was investigated using three concentrations (w/w) of sucrose: 4.21% (0.125 M), 8.28% (0.25 M) and 16.06% (0.5 M). Sucrose was dissolved in four media [water with no tastant and water with 0.73% (0.125 M) sodium chloride, 0.04% (0.002 M) citric acid and 0.04% (0.002 M) caffeine] as standard stimuli. Subjects (n = 39) were assigned into four groups, each group performing the memory task in one medium only. After tasting each standard the subjects reproduced the subjective taste intensity immediately and after 12 min and 1, 5, 25 and 125 h by mixing portions of low (0%) and high (29.75%; 1 M) concentrations (w/w) of sucrose and by tasting and retasting (ad libitum procedure). The produced sucrose concentrations increased significantly from the first session to the 125 h time interval. There was a significant difference between immediately reproduced standard concentrations and concentrations produced after all time intervals. Relative differences from standard (delta i/i) differed only between concentrations produced immediately and after 125 h time interval. The low (4.21%) concentration showed larger differences from standard than the high (16.06%) concentration. The added tastant had no effect on the results.   相似文献

The current study examined the effects of the D2 agonist (quinpirole) and D2 antagonist (eticlopride) on temporal discrimination performance in a conditional discrimination task (Experiment I) and a delayed conditional discrimination task (Experiment II). In both experiments rats discriminated between a scheduled stimulus duration of 3 s versus 9 s. Consistent with previous reports, overall discrimination performance decreased in a dose-dependent manner with both drugs. Changes in response bias (the tendency to choose-short or choose-long irrespective of actual stimulus duration), however, were best characterized in terms of both drugs tending to attenuate the bias effects normally observed during baseline drug-free performance. Specifically, the 'choose-short' bias observed in Experiment I and at a relatively short, 0.1 s, delay in Experiment II became less extreme with increasing doses. In addition, the 'choose-long' bias observed at a relatively long, 6 s, delay in Experiment II also became less extreme with increasing doses. Thus, whether there was an apparent shift from a short response bias to long, or vice versa, was the product of the delay interval between stimulus presentation and choice rather than whether the drug in question was a D2 agonist or antagonist. Such an attenuation of bias may have arisen because of subjects confounding the delay interval with the actual discriminative stimulus duration.  相似文献

Any occasional changes in the acoustic environment are of potential importance for survival. In humans, the preattentive detection of such changes generates the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of event-related brain potentials. MMN is elicited to rare changes ('deviants') in a series of otherwise regularly repeating stimuli ('standards'). Deviant stimuli are detected on the basis of a neural comparison process between the input from the current stimulus and the sensory memory trace of the standard stimuli. It is, however, unclear to what extent animals show a similar comparison process in response to auditory changes. To resolve this issue, epidural potentials were recorded above the primary auditory cortex of urethane-anesthetized rats. In an oddball condition, tone frequency was used to differentiate deviants interspersed randomly among a standard tone. Mismatch responses were observed at 60-100 ms after stimulus onset for frequency increases of 5% and 12.5% but not for similarly descending deviants. The response diminished when the silent inter-stimulus interval was increased from 375 ms to 600 ms for +5% deviants and from 600 ms to 1000 ms for +12.5% deviants. In comparison to the oddball condition the response also diminished in a control condition in which no repetitive standards were presented (equiprobable condition). These findings suggest that the rat mismatch response is similar to the human MMN and indicate that anesthetized rats provide a valuable model for studies of central auditory processing.  相似文献

The notion of the temporal window of integration, when applied in a multisensory context, refers to the breadth of the interval across which the brain perceives two stimuli from different sensory modalities as synchronous. It maintains a unitary perception of multisensory events despite physical and biophysical timing differences between the senses. The boundaries of the window can be influenced by attention and past sensory experience. Here we examined whether task demands could also influence the multisensory temporal window of integration. We varied the stimulus onset asynchrony between simple, short-lasting auditory and visual stimuli while participants performed two tasks in separate blocks: a temporal order judgment task that required the discrimination of subtle auditory-visual asynchronies, and a reaction time task to the first incoming stimulus irrespective of its sensory modality. We defined the temporal window of integration as the range of stimulus onset asynchronies where performance was below 75% in the temporal order judgment task, as well as the range of stimulus onset asynchronies where responses showed multisensory facilitation (race model violation) in the reaction time task. In 5 of 11 participants, we observed audio-visual stimulus onset asynchronies where reaction time was significantly accelerated (indicating successful integration in this task) while performance was accurate in the temporal order judgment task (indicating successful segregation in that task). This dissociation suggests that in some participants, the boundaries of the temporal window of integration can adaptively recalibrate in order to optimize performance according to specific task demands.  相似文献

Studies of temporal discrimination in non-human subjects have reliably shown a choose-short effect: higher matching accuracy on short-duration-sample trials than on long-duration-sample trials. This effect occurs as a function of increasing the delay between the onset of sample and comparison stimuli in a delayed matching-to-sample procedure. The present experiment investigated whether the choose-short effect could be demonstrated in human subjects under conditions which paralleled those used with non-human subjects. Subjects responded under a discrete-trial procedure in which they were required to push one of two buttons depending on the duration of a sample stimulus (a blue square on a computer monitor). Delays (0, 8, 16, and 32s) separated sample and comparison stimuli (two white boxes) and were tested both within and across several sessions. Intermediate durations (probe stimuli between 2 and 4s) were also presented. The addition of a delay between the sample and comparison stimuli produced a bias to judge intervals as short when the 8 and 32-s delays were tested across sessions and when the 0, 16, and 32-s delays were tested within the same session. Thus, the choose-short effect was produced in human subjects using the interval bisection procedure regardless of delay length.  相似文献

Secondary data analysis was used to compare responding early on a transfer test from rats previously trained simultaneously or successively on multiple temporal discriminations for the same number of trials [Guilhardi, P., Church, R.M., 2005 a. Dynamics of temporal discrimination. Learn. Behav., 33, 399-416]. Three fixed intervals (30, 60, and 120 s) were signaled by three stimuli (light, noise, and clicker). Twelve rats were trained with the three stimulus-interval pairs intermixed on each experimental session (simultaneous condition); 12 other rats were trained in successive blocks of 10 sessions on each pair (blocked condition). Then, all rats had a transfer test in which all three stimulus-interval pairs were presented intermixed on each session. Rats in the simultaneous and blocked condition responded similarly during training, but differently during early stages of the transfer test. One possibility is that rats in the blocked condition were controlled by the previous interval, not by the current stimulus. These results challenge the usual assumptions from models of timing and conditioning that both simultaneous and blocked training produce learning of the associations between stimulus and interval in a multiple interval training task.  相似文献

Recognition of short time intervals (10, 60, and 180 ms) between visual stimuli presented to the left or right hemisphere was studied in adult healthy people. The interval of 180 ms is recognized better than that of 10 or 60 ms. Learning with repeated tests with 180 ms intervals proceeds better than that with short intervals. The predominance of the left hemisphere has been revealed only for perception of 10 ms interval. The other time intervals asymmetry is not observed. It is suggested that the left hemisphere is predominant in estimation of short (less than 60 ms) time intervals. In formation of time nervous model a significant role is played by local activation of the cortical zone where the standard stimulus is addressed.  相似文献

The goal was to determine whether rats time filled and empty intervals of equal duration differently. Each of five rats was trained for 50 sessions on an instrumental appetitive head entry procedure in which food was available (primed) every 120 s. On "empty" cycles, 30s prior to the next food prime, a 0.5-s pulse of white noise was presented. On "filled" cycles, 30s prior to the next food prime, white noise came on and stayed on until food was delivered. The two types of cycles were presented with equal probability. The results showed that the rats timed both the food-to-food interval and the stimulus-to-food interval. A comparison of the response gradients on filled and empty cycles following stimulus presentation showed better temporal discrimination on filled cycles. The results were modeled using a Packet theory of timing, with a linear averaging rule to combine the temporal information provided by the stimulus and food. The model fits to the individual response gradients were evaluated with a Turing test.  相似文献

In positive serial conditional discrimination, animals respond during a target stimulus when it is preceded by a feature stimulus, but they do not respond when the same target stimulus is presented alone. Moreover, the feature and target stimuli are separated from each other by an empty interval. The present work aimed to investigate if two durations (4 or 16 s) of the same feature stimulus (light) could modulate the operant responses of rats to different levers (A and B) during a 5-s target stimulus (tone). In the present study, lever A was associated with the 4-s light, and lever B was associated with the 16-s light. A 5-s empty interval was included between the light and the tone. In the same training procedure, the rats were also presented with the 5-s tone without the preceding light stimuli. In these trials, the responses were not reinforced. We evaluated the hippocampal involvement of these behavioral processes by selectively lesioning the dentate gyrus with colchicine. Once trained, the rats were submitted to a test using probe trials without reinforcement. They were presented with intermediate durations of the feature stimulus (light) to obtain a temporal bisection curve recorded during the exposure to the target stimuli. The rats from both groups learned to respond with high rates during tones preceded by light and with low rates during tones presented alone, which indicated acquisition of the serial conditional discrimination. The rats were able to discriminate between the 4- and 16-s lights by correctly choosing lever A or B. In the test, the temporal bisection curves from both experimental groups showed a bisection point at the arithmetic mean between 4 and 16 s. Such processes were not impaired by the dentate gyrus lesion. Thus, our results showed that different durations of a feature stimulus could result in conditional properties. However, this processing did not appear to depend on the dentate gyrus alone.  相似文献

EEG and behavioural reactions were studied at the action of signal and nonsignal light flashes. The minimal time of stimulus exposition necessary for preserving differences in EEG activation reactions to nonreinforced stimuli of different intensity (in a diapason from 3.5 to 250 lk) was shown to exceed 1 s. After giving the signal meaning to the flashes the minimal time of stimulus exposition when the animals were capable to discriminate intensity of the flashes (in a diapason from 3.5 to 30 lk) just at the first presentation, was equal to 0.1 s. Decrease of the minimal time of stimulus exposition necessary for discrimination of the light signals was supposed to be stipulated by their biological significance and presetting of the analyzing system being organized by preliminary learning a crude analysis of stimuli. Discrimination of the light stimuli of short duration was impossible without such presetting.  相似文献

The P300 event-related potential was elicited with auditory stimuli in 4 experiments which manipulated combinations of stimulus target probability (10% vs. 30%), task difficulty (easy vs. hard), and inter-stimulus interval (5 sec vs. 2 sec). P300 amplitude was smaller and peak latency longer for the more difficult relative to the easier tasks across experiments. Increases in stimulus target probability generally diminished P300 amplitude and shortened peak latency more for the easy relative to difficult task conditions. Increasing the number of non-target stimulus tones decreased P300 amplitude reliably, but increased latency only slightly. Task difficulty did not interact with variations in inter-stimulus interval which produced generally weak effects for both amplitude and latency. These findings suggests that P300 amplitude and latency obtained from auditory discrimination paradigms reflect processing difficulty independently of stimulus target probability unless differences in task requirements affect stimulus encoding.  相似文献

This study tested a model of how animals discriminate the relative numerosity of stimuli in successive or sequential presentation tasks. In a discrete-trials procedure, pigeons were shown one light for nf times and then another for nl times. Next they received food for choosing the light that had occurred the least-number of times during the sample. At issue were (a) how performance varies with the interval between the two stimulus sets (the interblock interval) and the interval between the end of the sample and the beginning of the choice period (the retention interval); and (b) whether a simple mathematical model of the discrimination process could account for the data. The model assumed that the influence of a stimulus on choice increases linearly when the stimulus is presented, but decays exponentially when the stimulus is absent; choice probability is given by the ratio of the influence values of the two stimuli. The model also assumed that as the retention interval elapses there is an increasing probability that the ongoing discriminative process be disrupted and then the animal responds randomly. Results showed that increasing the interblock intervals reduced the probability of choosing the last stimulus of the sample as the least-frequent one. Increasing the retention interval reduced accuracy without inducing any stimulus bias. The model accounted well for the major trends in the data.  相似文献
