The external features of the developing embryos of the springtail, Tomocerus ishibashii, are described. The clypeolabral anlage arises as a single, unpaired swelling. The entognathy is completed by the ventral growth of the tergal anlagen of mandibular, maxillary, and labial segments. These anlagen also form the posterior part of the cranium. The palpi of maxilla and labium are homologous with the telopodites, and proximal parts of these head appendages are homologous with the coxopodites. The sternal element of the labial segment does not participate in the postmentum formation. The anlagen of abdominal appendages appear in the first to the fourth abdominal segments. The first, third, and fourth appendage anlagen form the ventral tube, tenaculum, and furcula, respectively. The fused proximal parts of the first, third, and fourth appendage anlagen are homologous with the coxopodites, and the distal parts which do not fuse are homologous with the telopodites. The anlagen of the second abdominal appendages become flattened and spread over the ventral side of this segment. The ventral structures of the first four abdominal segments are appendicular in origin.  相似文献

We evaluated the hypothesis that the Drosophila melanogaster second chromosome gene scabrous (sca), a candidate sensory bristle number quantitative trait locus (QTL), contributes to naturally occurring variation in bristle number. Variation in abdominal and sternopleural bristle number was quantified for wild-derived sca alleles in seven genetic backgrounds: as homozygous second chromosomes (C2) in an isogenic background, homozygous lines in which approximately 20 cM including the sca locus had been introgressed into the isogenic background (sca BC), as C2 and sca BC heterozygotes and hemizygotes against a P element insertional sca allele and a P-induced sca deficiency in the same isogenic background, and as sca BC heterozygotes against the wild-type sca allele of isogenic strain. Molecular restriction map variation was determined for a 45 kb region including the sca locus, and single-stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) was examined for the third intron and parts of the third and fourth exons. Associations between each of the 27 molecular polymorphisms and bristle number were evaluated within each genotype and on the first principal component score determined from all seven genotypes, separately for each sex and bristle trait. Permutation tests were used to assess the empirical significance thresholds, accounting for multiple, correlated tests, and correlated markers. Three sites in regulatory regions were associated with female-specific variation in abdominal bristle number, one of which was an SSCP site in the region of the gene associated with regulation of sca in embryonic abdominal segments.  相似文献

The properties of three dominant alleles of ftz are described. These alleles cause transformations of the first abdominal segment to the third and cause alternate segment pattern deletions that are out of phase with respect to those caused by ftz null alleles. To explain the effects of these mutations, a model is proposed in which ftz+ has two roles: to subdivide the body into parasegments and to activate appropriate bithorax complex functions in alternate parasegments. According to this model, the effects of the novel ftz alleles can be understood as arising from a slight widening of the blastoderm stripes of ftz expression.  相似文献

Many macruran decapod crustaceans show sexual dimorphism of abdominal appendages adapted for use as secondary reproductive organs. Not only does the Australian crayfish, Cherax destructor, show no external, abdominal dimorphism, but both males and females have lost the pleopods of the first abdominal segment entirely. The first nerves of the abdominal ganglia of crayfish and lobsters carry the axons of the pleopod motor neurons. We used intracellular cobalt infusion into the first nerves of the first and second abdominal ganglia to reveal the motor neuron complement of these ganglia in males and females. The first nerves of the second abdominal ganglia of both males and females have approximately 37 motor neurons associated with them. The homologous nerves in the first abdominal segment, where there are no pleopods, have only 8 or 9 motor neurons associated with them. The evolutionary implications of this difference are discussed.  相似文献

The polycomb-group genes, a set of genes characterized by mutations that cause similar phenotypes and dosage-dependent interactions, are required for the normal expression of segment-specific homeotic loci. Here we report that polycombeotic (formerly 1(3)1902), originally identified by a lethal mutation that causes a small-disc phenotype, is also a member of this group of essential genes. Adults homozygous for temperature-sensitive pco alleles that were exposed to the restrictive temperature during larval life display the second and third leg to first leg transformation characteristic of polycomb-group mutants. Adult females homozygous for temperature-sensitive alleles exposed to the restrictive temperature during oogenesis produce embryos that show anterior segments with structures normally unique to the eighth abdominal segment, another transformation characteristic of polycomb-group mutants. Mutations in the polycombeotic gene also cause defects not reported for mutations in other polycomb-group genes. Females homozygous for the most extreme temperature-sensitive allele are sterile, and larvae homozygous for null alleles have small imaginal discs and reduced frequencies of mitotic figures in the brain. Dominant mutations originally identified as enhancers or suppressors of zeste are gain-of-function alleles of polycombeotic. The type and variety of defects displayed by different mutations in this gene indicate that the product might be involved in chromosome structure and/or function.  相似文献

A paradoxical genotype for Drosophila melanogaster is constructed by combining two homeotic mutations, which cause contradictory transformations of the first abdominal segment to metathorax and second abdominal segment. The resulting conflict in genetic instructions is resolved by the individual cells which normally give rise to the first abdominal segment. Each cell elects to follow only one set of instructions and determines to either metathorax or second abdominal segment. The choice between pathways can be characterized by the “determination equilibrium,” which is a measure of the probability that no cell in a presumptive first abdominal histoblast determines to second abdominal segment. The determination equilibrium allows a quantitative assessment of genotypic and physiological factors which can influence the probability of a determinative decision. These results are discussed from the point of view of the abstract nature of determinative decisions and from the point of view of the mechanisms involved.  相似文献

The musculature of the fourth to eighth abdominal segments is typically composed of twenty pairs of segmental muscles associated with the body wall. In the first to third and ninth and tenth segments certain modifications to the basic plan occur in association with the abdominal-thoracic junction, the respiratory apparatus and the anal appendages. In some segments there are also paired muscles associated with the alimentary canal. Two large transverse muscles are present in the abdomen. There are eight abdominal ganglia, the first seven of which each give rise to three pairs of lateral nerves, the eighth to five pairs. In addition there are ten median abdominal nerves. The innervation fields of the various nerves are described. The first three pairs of lateral nerves of the last ganglion are homologous with the lateral nerves of the other abdominal ganglia; the fourth pair innervates most of segment nine; and the fifth pair innervates the remainder of segment nine, segment ten and the anal appendages. Certain of the abdominal muscles are innervated by branches from two different nerve roots. In segments six and seven the anterior point of attachment of the longitudinal stretch receptors is normally different from that in the other abdominal segments. This is discussed in the light of the types of movement which involve the abdomen and it seems apparent that these receptors are affected not only by swimming and abdominal flexion, as are the other longitudinal stretch receptors, but also by respiratory movements. Two distinct types of epidermal sensilla are present on the abdomen, spines and hairs. The former are the more numerous on the body, the latter on the anal appendages.  相似文献

The last-instar larva, pupa, male and female of Simulium virescens sp. nov. are described and illustrated. This species has a peculiar larva, which has an elongated head capsule and light-green colour. The first thoracic segment has tubercle on its dorsal region and the third thoracic segment has one pair of tubercles; the first to the fourth abdominal segments have one pair of tubercles on each segment. Until now this new species had only been collected at the type locality, which is on the middle stretch of the Correntina River in the southwestern portion of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Females were voraciously biting humans during the field work. This new species represents the second species of Simulium (Psilopelmia) in Brazil and the first registered outside of the Brazilian Amazon Region.  相似文献

The 8th abdominal segment of Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) larvae contains aerating trachea and tracheole tufts that end in the hemocoel of the 8th segment, unlike the tracheae that invade tissues in other segments. These tracheal tufts from the 8th abdominal segment extend to the tokus region, which along with the telson cavity is known to act as a “lung” for hemocytes in Calpodes ethlius and a few other lepidopteran larvae. The goal of this research was to study the effects of these tracheal tufts in the 8th abdominal segment on parasitoid development inside the host larvae, H. virescens. The first objective was to determine if the eggs of the parasitoid, Toxoneuron nigriceps, are predominantly located among the tracheal tufts of the 8th abdominal segment compared to other body cavity regions irrespective of their oviposition site or the position of the host larvae. The results showed that several hours after oviposition most of the eggs are found in the 8th abdominal segment irrespective of the oviposition site or the position of the host larvae. The second objective was to study the effect of varying oxygen concentrations in vitro on various developmental stages of the egg. The results showed that decreasing oxygen concentrations adversely affects the parasitoid egg development in vitro. A third objective was to determine the oxygen concentration in 8th abdominal segment of the host larvae and compare it to other regions of the body using an oxygen sensor placed in vivo. The results suggested relatively high concentration of oxygen in the 8th abdominal segment compared to other regions of the host, thus supporting our hypothesis that the increased oxygen level in the 8th abdominal segment is important to the development of the parasitoid eggs.  相似文献

A clonal analysis has shown that the dorsal surface of the first abdominal segment of Drosophila melanogaster is subdivided into anterior and posterior compartments. Cells of the posterior compartment grow up to but not beyond the anterior-posterior compartment border within the first abdominal segment and the intersegmental border that defines the boundary between the first and second abdominal segments. Growing within these boundaries, a narrow band of tissue clonally isolated from the adjoining tissue is formed. When these posterior cells are deficient for the engrailed locus, however, neither the compartment nor the segment border is maintained. The implications, that compartmentalization is essential for segmentation, and that all insect segments are subdivided by anterior and posterior compartments, are discussed.  相似文献
