Feral house mice on sub-Antarctic Marion Island become reproductively active (males scrotal, females with perforate vaginas or pregnant) at an age >60 days and breed until death, which may occur at more than 13 months. Breeding is strongly seasonal; pregnant or lactating females were found only from October to May. A substantial proportion of mice old enough to breed in one summer overwinters to form a significant component of the breeding population the following summer but it is unlikely that any survive a second winter. The onset of breeding is closely synchronized with increasing day length but occurs about 2 months before mean temperature at the ground surface starts to increase significantly. Cessation of breeding is more closely associated with declining temperatures in late summer. For both males and females, the best correlation between reproductive activity and any of the temperature parameters measured was with average maximum temperature 1 cm above the ground. Competition for macroinvertebrate prey increases sharply in early winter due to high mouse numbers. The breeding season in 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 was at least 2 months longer than in 1979/1980, because the mice started breeding earlier, and stopped breeding later, in 1991/1993. The later cessation of breeding in 1991/1993 was despite the fact that there was a greater competition for macroinvertebrate prey, and that mean air temperatures during the early winter months were lower, than in 1979/1980.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry was used to measure the range areas, activity patterns and time budgets of 21 adult male wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) between May 1991 and August 1992. The study investigated variation in range, total distance travelled, speed of movement and time budgets between wood mice in the nonbreeding and breeding seasons in a deciduous woodland (n = 8 and 6 respectively). We also examined habitat differences by estimating these same parameters for wood mice inhabiting maritime sand-dunes in the breeding season (n = 7). Insufficient males of an appropriate mass for radiotracking were captured to study the sand-dune mice in the nonbreeding season. Significant variation was found across both season and site. In the breeding season, in woodland, range areas were 5 times larger than during the nonbreeding season. Wood mice on the sand-dunes exploited ranges 28 times greater than their woodland counterparts. The pattern of variation in range area was parallelled by significant differences in total distances and average speeds travelled per night. Diurnal activity, c. 60 min day−1, was frequently recorded, at both sites, but only, in the breeding season, which was attributed to the need to forage in order to maintain energy balance. The comparatively lower availability of food on the sand-dunes was considered the main factor explaining the greater range area, total distance moved, speed travelled and level of activity of animals at this site. Populations of feral house mice (Mus domesticus L.) in Australia undergo multiannual fluctuations in density, and these outbreaks may be partly driven by some change in behavioural self-regulation. In other vertebrate populations with multiannual fluctuations, changes in kin structure have been proposed as a causal mechanism for changes in spacing behaviour, which consequently result in density fluctuations. We tested the predictions of two alternative conceptual models based on kin selection in a population of house mice during such an outbreak. Both published models (Charnov & Finerty 1980; Lambin & Krebs 1991) propose that the level of relatedness between interacting individuals affects their behavioural response and that this changes with population density, though the nature of this relationship differs between the two models. Neither of the models was consistent with all observed changes in relatedness between interacting female mice; however, our results suggested that changes in kin structure still have potential for explaining why mouse outbreaks begin. Therefore, we have developed a variant of one of these conceptual models suggesting that the maintenance of female kin groups through the preceding winter significantly improves recruitment during the subsequent breeding season, and is therefore necessary for mouse outbreaks. We provide six testable predictions to falsify this hypothesis.  相似文献

The White-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus , a morphologically and ecologically similar species to the Wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus (L.), preferentially deposits faeces on dropping boards, that is on artificial, clean, flat surfaces (Emlen, Hine, Fuller & Alfonso, 1957). Since such behaviour has clear scent-marking implications and can also be used to provide a ready index of population size, it was judged of interest to discover whether it is exhibited by Wood mice.  相似文献

Dispersal in house mice   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This review evaluates direct (live-trapping) and indirect (genetic) methods to study dispersal in wild house mice ( Mus musculus ) and summarizes field and experimental data to examine the causes and consequences of dispersal. Commensal house mice (associated with human habitations, farms, food stores and other anthropogenic habitats) typically show lower rates of dispersal than feral house mice (living in crops, natural and semi-natural habitats). However, early claims of long-term fine-scale genetic structure in commensal house mice (due to low rates of dispersal) are not supported by recent data. Dispersal becomes obligatory when habitat conditions deteriorate, but most dispersal occurs below the local environmental carrying capacity and is due to social interactions with conspecifics. Excursions are relatively frequent and probably allow mice to assess the quality of habitats before dispersing. Young males have the greatest tendency to disperse, apparently prompted mainly by aggressive interactions with dominant males. If they do disperse, females integrate into new groups more easily than do males. Dispersing house mice risk loss of condition or death, but may gain reproductive opportunities on arrival in a new location. House mice can be transported passively as stowaways with humans; this contributes to population persistence and genetic structure at regional scales and has allowed house mice to spread world-wide.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 565–583.  相似文献

Animal welfare depends on the possibility to express species-specific behaviours and can be strongly compromised in socially and environmentally deprived conditions. Nesting materials and refuges are very important resources to express these behaviours and should be considered as housing supplementation items. We evaluated the effects of one item of housing supplementation in standard settings in laboratory mice. C57BL/6JOlaHsd (B6) and BALB/cOlaHsd (BALB) young male and female mice, upon arrival, were housed in groups of four in standard laboratory cages and after 10 days of acclimatization, a red transparent plastic triangular-shaped Mouse House™ was introduced into half of the home cages. Animals with or without a mouse house were observed in various contexts for more than one month. Body weight gain and food intake, home cage behaviours, emotionality and response to standard cage changing procedures were evaluated. The presence of a mouse house in the home cage did not interfere with main developmental and behavioural parameters or emotionality of BALB and B6 male and female mice compared with controls. Both strains habituated to the mouse house in about a week, but made use of it differently, with BALB mice using the house more than the B6 strain. Our results suggest that mice habituated to the mouse house rather quickly without disrupting their home cage activities. Scientists can thus be encouraged to use mouse houses, also in view of the implementation of the EU Directive (2010/63/EU).  相似文献

Locations of feeding and drinking by social groups of commensal house mice (Mus domesticus), were monitored daily for 30 to 90 minutes for 1 to 3 months. Eighteen foodcups and 18 water bottles were distributed in a 2.4 × 5.1 m population cage. Social groups concentrated their feeding at a few of the foodcups which varied among replicates but drank from most of the water bottles. A mouse feeding at the same sites that are used by others implies that mice use social cues in choosing feeding sites. This is the first documentation of socially influenced choice of feeding sites by wild-caught commensal house mice. A mouse drinking at several sites without concentrating on any sites implies social cues are less important in choosing drinking sites.  相似文献

The subject of sanctuaries for chimpanzees has lately become the topic of a great deal of discussion (Brent, Butler, & Haberstroh, 1997; Committee on Long-Term Care of Chimpanzees, 1997; Dyke, Williams-Blangero, Mamelka, & Goodwin, 1995; Peterson & Goodall, 1993). In the United States, laboratories that use chimpanzees in research are facing a housing crisis. An increase in captive births caused by the initiation of the National Chimpanzee Breeding and Research Program in 1986 (Hobson, Graham, & Rowell, 1991), coupled with the diminished use of chimpanzees as experimental subjects, have led to a large population of chimpanzees considered to be surplus to demand (Blood, Wolfle, & Whitney, 1992). These chimpanzees, as well as an unknown number from the private sector, are candidates for what is currently being called retirement.  相似文献

House mice (Mus musculus) are human commensals and have served as a primary model in biomedical, ecological and evolutionary research. Although there is detailed knowledge of the biogeography of house mice in Europe, little is known of the history of house mice in China, despite the fact that China encompasses an enormous portion of their range. In the present study, 535 house mice caught from 29 localities in China were studied by sequencing the mitochondrial D‐loop and genotyping 10 nuclear microsatellite markers distributed on 10 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analyses revealed two evolutionary lineages corresponding to Mus musculus castaneus and Mus musculus musculus in the south and north, respectively, with the Yangtze River approximately representing the boundary. More detailed analyses combining published sequence data from mice sampled in neighbouring countries revealed the migration routes of the two subspecies into China: M. m. castaneus appeared to have migrated through a southern route (Yunnan and Guangxi), whereas M. m. musculus entered China from Kazakhstan through the north‐west border (Xinjiang). Bayesian analysis of mitochondrial sequences indicated rapid population expansions in both subspecies, approximately 4650–9300 and 7150–14 300 years ago for M. m. castaneus and M. m. musculus, respectively. Interestingly, the migration routes of Chinese house mice coincide with the colonization routes of modern humans into China, and the expansion times of house mice are consistent with the development of agriculture in southern and northern China, respectively. Finally, our study confirmed the existence of a hybrid zone between M. m. castaneus and M. m. musculus in China. Further study of this hybrid zone will provide a useful counterpart to the well‐studied hybrid zone between M. m. musculus and Mus musculus domesticus in central Europe.  相似文献

The diet and impact of house mice on a sub-Antarctic island   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An analysis of the stomach contents of house mice (Mus musculus L.) at three sites on Marion Island (47°S, 38°E) over a 1-year period showed that the mice feed mostly on terrestrial macroinvertebrates but that plants (mainly seed) are an important component of the diet in mid- to late summer. Larvae of a flightless moth, weevil larvae and adults and, at one of the sites, earthworms were the invertebrate items that showed the highest importance value over the year. Diet diversity was slightly lower in summer and autumn than in winter and spring. Diet variety was lowest in midsummer and highest in either autumn or winter, depending on the site. Mean stomach-content mass was significantly higher in midwinter than during the rest of the year. When offered prey of different types and sizes, mice selected moth larvae first in 92% of the trials; earthworms or weevil adults were most frequently selected second, and weevil larvae fourth. An introduced slug species was selected only once, as the last choice and only part of it was eaten. With both moth larvae and earthworms, the heaviest individual offered was almost always chosen first. Surprisingly, mice never consumed more than about half of the seed offered to them and their condition deteriorated severely during the trials with seed; in a third of the trials with two types of seed, the mice completely ignored the seed. The impact of mice predation on invertebrates was assessed at two of the sites - a dry mire and a coastal biotic herbfield that is influenced by seabird and seal manuring. Moth larvae and adults, weevil larvae and adults, earthworms, spiders and flies made up >90% of the animal remains in the stomach contents over the year and, on average, the mice daily consumed 45 g (dry mass) ha-1 of those invertebrates at the mire and 194 g ha-1 at the biotic site. Moth larvae made up a substantial proportion of these amounts; average daily consumption was 30 g ha-1 at the mire and 107 g ha-1 at the biotic site. In terms of the amount consumed in relation to biomass, the heaviest impact of mice at both sites was on weevil adults; at the biotic site mice daily consumed 13% of weevil adult biomass in autumn and nearly 6 times the annual average biomass over the year. At the mire, slightly more than the annual average weevil adult biomass was consumed over the year. The consumption of invertebrates by mice found in this study (1992/1993) was about 20% greater than in 1979/1980. The most striking changes in annual average consumption rate between 1979/1980 and 1992/1993 were for weevil larvae (increased nearly fourfold) and earthworms (increased sixfold at the biotic site and threefold at the mire). In contrast, the consumption of spiders at both sites decreased between 1979/1980 and 1992/1993.  相似文献

Summary Traditionally, the adaptive value of mammalian white fat stores is considered in relation to longterm needs such as providing protection against the vagaries of winter or signalling the reproductive system when energy reserves are sufficient to risk pregnancy. As shown here, the fat stores of young house mice could not serve such needs. Despite prolonged acclimation and excess nesting material, food deprivation at 10°C significantly lowered the fat stores of peripubertal female house mice in only 12 h, and would exhaust them in 30 h. Even close to thermoneutrality (24°C) the calculated time to exhaustion was only 70 h. The fat stores of a young house mouse are obviously too meager to offer any meaningful protection over a winter of several months duration, or even over a 5–6-week cycle of pregnancy and lactation. Furthermore, in a wild habitat where food availability and ambient temperature can vary rapidly and greatly, such fat stores would be too labile to effectively coordinate puberty with somatic development.  相似文献

At the Prince Edward Islands, temperatures have increased by approximately 1°C over the past 40 years, accompanied by a decline in precipitation. This has led to a reduction in the peat moisture content of mires and higher growing season warmth. The temperature-and moisture-sensitive sedge, Uncinia compacta R. Br. (Cyperaceae), has consequently increased its aerial cover on Prince Edward Island, but harvesting of seeds by feral house mice (up to 100% removed) has prevented this from happening on Marion Island. Such extensive use of resources suggests that prey switching may be taking place at Marion Island. Scat analyses revealed that mice are·not only eating ectemnorhinine weevils to a greater extent than found in previous studies of populations at Marion Island, but that they also prefer larger weevils (±6 mm). A decrease in body size of preferred weevil prey species [Bothrometopus randi Jeannel and Ectemnorhinus similis C.O. Waterhouse (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)] has taken place on Marion Island (1986–1992), but not on Prince Edward Island. This appears to be a result of increased predation on weevils. In addition, adults of the prey species, E. similis are relatively more abundant on Prince Edward Island than adults of the smaller congener E. marioni Jeannel, and could not be found on Marion Island in the late austral summer of 1991. These results not only provide support for previous hypotheses of the effect of global warming on mouse-plant-invertebrate interactions on the Prince Edward Islands, but also provide limited evidence for the first recorded case of predator-mediated speciation. They also show that the interaction of human-induced changes operating at different scales may have profound consequences for local systems.  相似文献

Whilst there is good evidence for negative impacts of introduced rat species on island ecosystems, the effects of house mice (Mus musculus) are generally less well documented. In some situations, introduced house mice can exert severe impacts, particularly where this is the only introduced mammal. Here, we examine the distribution, relative abundance and breeding success of small burrowing seabirds on Steeple Jason Island, Falklands, in relation to habitat types and the distribution of house mice which is the sole introduced mammal species, and we make comparisons with seabird distribution and densities on the neighbouring island of Grand Jason where mice are absent. Grey-backed storm-petrel (Garrodia nereis) and Wilson’s storm-petrel (Oceanites oceanicus), which due to their extremely small size are likely to be the most vulnerable to mouse predation, were considerably more abundant on mouse-free Grand Jason than on Steeple Jason. Grey-backed storm-petrel, which are typically associated with tussac grass, avoided this habitat on Steeple Jason where it is associated with high levels of house mouse activity (assessed from the proportion of wax baits gnawed overnight), whereas on mouse-free Grand Jason, there was no such avoidance. Wilson’s storm-petrel nesting on Steeple Jason suffered high rates of egg and chick loss. Whilst we found evidence for detrimental impacts of house mice on the two small storm-petrel species, there was no relationship between relative mouse activity levels and the distribution or abundance of the larger thin-billed Prion (Pachyptila belcheri).  相似文献

Since its introduction into eastern North America in the 1940s, the eastern population of house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) has become partially migratory, unlike its nonmigratory source population in southern California (Able and Belthoff in Proc. R. Soc. Lond. 265 (1410), 2063–2071, 1998; Belthoff and Gauthreaux in Condor 93, 374–382, 1991). The infectious disease mycoplasmal conjunctivitis (pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum or “MG”), which has been monitored in the house finch population since its appearance around 1993 (Dhondt et al. in J. Wild. Dis. 34 (2), 265–280, 1998), may induce higher mortality rates among populations in more northerly latitudes relative to more southerly populations. Here, we investigate the potential impact of this differential disease mortality on the migratory structure of the eastern house finch population using an epidemic modeling approach. Analytical and computational results suggest the ongoing MG epidemic in the eastern house finch could lead to increases in the percentage of and the total number of migrating individuals in a population despite overall population declines, assuming relatively high winter mortality rates in the north eastern part of their range. These results also suggest that empirical evidence of such a change in migratory structure would be most noticeable in northerly inland populations that showed significant declines following the initial outbreak of MG in the east.  相似文献

Although it is broadly accepted that small mammals often climb trees, only few studies explore arboreality in woodland rodents systematically. Here, we investigate the three-dimensional habitat use of wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus and bank voles Myodes glareolus at three different sites in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, under varying environmental conditions. A total of 12 trapping sessions was carried out between March and September 2003 and 2004. During each session, 100 Longworth live-traps with shrew escape holes were set in a 25-point-grid for 3 succeeding nights. Each time, 50 traps were placed on the ground, and 50 in surrounding trees at heights of 30–250 cm. Wood mice were significantly more arboreal than bank voles, and male wood mice spent significantly more time in trees than did females. Arboreality in bank voles occurred only under high population densities and food shortage, and both species were significantly more arboreal in woodland with dense understorey. Thus we conclude that while arboreality is predominantly a result of inter- and intra-specific competition, of the two species we studied, only wood mice, being more agile, can afford to utilize trees without getting caught by predators, and that sex differences are due to male territoriality. Estimates of population sizes and distribution, as well as studies of inter-specific interactions and socio-spatial behaviour are presumed to be affected by these results, and are currently likely to underestimate rodent numbers considerably.  相似文献

Between November 1963 and October 1965 the long distance movements of Bank voles and Wood mice within an almost isolated 26 ha deciduous woodlot were studied by live trapping at approximately monthly intervals. Dispersal was most marked in juvenile Bank voles where most of the males and about half the females under 13 g, when released and later recaptured, had dispersed.
Dispersal of juvenile Wood mice did not occur after September, before which time the evidence was sparse and inconclusive. It was estimated that about 6% of adult maleand 2% of adult female Bank voles dispersed. Little dispersal of adult Wood mice took place.
The term 'transient' is discussed. True transients in the "once-caught' category are thought to be few. There was no evidence that the trappable population of either species included a significant number of non-resident individuals.  相似文献

Sedge Warbler breeding was studied at a site in Greater Manchester, UK, during 1991 and 1993. Birds were individually colour-ringed and, in the 2 years of the study, 18 pairs and 38 nesting attempts were observed. In both years, the majority of pairs (> 90%) attempted a second brood after successfully raising their first. Overall nest survival was 44% and the median reproductive output of individual males was 6.5 fledglings in each year (range 0–10 and 0–15 in 1991 and 1993, respectively). After fledging, one or both parents continued to feed the young for up to 15 days (median 11, range 0–15 days). One male was apparently bigamous in 1991 and in 1993, raising four broods successfully in 1993 and 25 fledglings over the 2 years. These observations suggest that double brooding is the normal strategy for Sedge Warblers in this population and that polygyny may be common, although easily overlooked.  相似文献

Studies on island populations of house mice (Mus domesticus) and their viruses reveal insights into viral persistence in isolated communities. We surveyed the ectoparasites, endoparasites, and antiviral antibodies for 11 murine viruses and two bacteria of house mice inhabiting two islands off Australia. House mice on Boullanger Island were seropositive to two viruses, murine cytomegalovirus and epizootic diarrhea of infant mice. On subantarctic Macquarie Island, house mice were seropositive for five viruses: murine cytomegalovirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, mouse parvovirus, epizootic diarrhea of infant mice, and Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus. The diversity of antiviral antibodies was lower among populations of house mice on islands than those inhabiting mainland Australia. The decreased diversity of viruses in island populations of house mice may be a function of which agent the founder mice transfer to the island and related to the low densities which the host population may periodically reach over time.  相似文献

Abstract The regulation of reproductive performance in small mammals may be determined by extrinsic or intrinsic parameters. In a large‐scale, replicated field experiment we monitored the seasonal fluctuation in food availability and tested the effects of food addition on the reproductive performance of wild house mice (Mus domesticus) in south‐eastern Australia. Ovulation rates and litter size increased during spring and peaked in October/November. Ovulation rate was consistently higher than litter size by approximately 1.2 embryos (19%). None of the extrinsic parameters measured (food quality and quantity, mouse abundance) had an impact on reproductive performance. The addition of food did not prevent the mid summer decrease in ovulation rates nor did it alter the difference between ovulation rates and litter size. While the number of previous pregnancies did not affect reproductive performance, the age of mice did: older mice tended to have higher ovulation rates than younger mice. The effect of age‐dependent changes in ovulation rates on population growth rates of house mice seemed to be of limited importance. We conclude that the reproductive output in wild house mice is determined by ovulation rates and not by litter size. The regulation of ovulation rates through an intrinsic factor (age) seems evident but the importance of food availability and house mouse abundance for ovulation rates is low.  相似文献

1. A single injection technique for GFR (14C-methoxyinulin clearance) was adapted for use in small mammals and applied to wild house mice (Mus musculus). 2. GFR in controls was 247 +/- 14(SE) microliter/min while that of mice acclimated to water shortage was reduced some 44%.  相似文献
