Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is one of the oldest living tree species and has been widely used in traditional medicine. Leaf extracts of ginkgo, such as the standardized extract EGb761, have become one of the best-selling herbal products. However, no bioactive compound directed at plants has been reported in this species. Therefore, we investigated possible allelopathic activity and searched for allelopathically active substances in ginkgo leaves. An aqueous methanol leaf extract inhibited the growth of roots and shoots of garden cress (Lepidium sativum), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), timothy (Phleum pratense) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) seedlings. The extract was purified by several chromatographic runs and an allelopathically active substance was isolated and identified by spectral analysis to be the novel compound 2-hydroxy-6-(10-hydroxypentadec-11-enyl)benzoic acid. The compound inhibited root and shoot growth of garden cress and timothy at concentrations greater than 3 μM. The activity of the compound was 10- to 52-fold that of nonanoic acid. These results suggest that 2-hydroxy-6-(10-hydroxypentadec-11-enyl)benzoic acid may contribute to the allelopathic effect caused by ginkgo leaf extract. The compound may also have potential as a template for the development of new plant control substances.  相似文献

Hundreds of aromatic plant species are growing naturally around Mediterranean. Plant essential oils are incorporated in aromatic plant material and follow the litter fall. During litter degradation, the presence of essential oils can affect soil microorganisms. Mycorrhizal fungi have never been investigated so far under the presence of volatile oils. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of aromatic Laurus nobilis L. on development of two mycorrhizal species Glomus deserticola and Glomus intraradices. The response of fungi colonization and host growth were monitored under different concentrations of L. nobilis leaves and essential oil. The major compounds of L. nobilis essential oil were 1,8-cineole (49.6%), sabinene (7.8%), ??-pinene (6.0%), eugenole (5.6%), ??-terpinyl acetate (5.2%) and ??-pinene (5.1%). Both mycorrhizal fungi colonized successfully the host plants whose growth was positively influenced by mycorrhizal fungi. G. deserticola presented higher infection level than G. intraradices. The addition of L. nobilis leaves in the soil resulted in mycorrhiza inhibition. The level of inhibition was positively correlated with the added amount of aromatic leaves in the soil. The essential oil presented a little higher inhibition than the leaves. The presence of this aromatic plant in many different ecosystems could contribute in mycorrhiza inhibition and it is suggested, when it’s possible, reduction of laurel litter before reforestation programs.  相似文献

Alfalfa is a host of Pratylenchus penetrans and P. neglectus, whereas crested wheatgrass is a host of P. neglectus but not of P. penetrans. In a 120-day greenhouse experiment at 24 ñ 3 C, P. neglectus inhibited the growth of ''Lahontan'' alfalfa and ''Fairway'' crested wheatgrass. There were no differences in persistence and plant growth of alfalfa and crested wheatgrass, or reproduction of P. neglectus, in single plantings of alfalfa (AO) or crested wheatgrass (CWO), or in interplanted alfalfa and crested wheatgrass (ACW) treatments. On alfalfa, P. penetrans inhibited growth and reproduced more than did P. neglectus. Inhibition of plant growth and reproduction of P. penetrans was greater on alfalfa in AO than in ACW treatments. Pratylenchus penetrans did not reproduce on crested wheatgrass, but inhibited growth of crested wheatgrass in interplanted treatments and was avirulent in single planted treatments. Results were similar in a controlled growth chamber experiment at 15, 20, 25, and 30 C. Both nematode species inhibited alfalfa growth at all temperatures, and P. penetrans was more virulent than was P. neglectus to alfalfa at all temperatures and treatments. Plant growth inhibition and reproduction of P. penetrans on alfalfa in single and interplanted treatments were similar at 15-20 C, but were greater in single than in interplanted treatments at 25-30 C. Pratylenchus penetrans was avirulent to crested wheatgrass in the single planted treatments at all temperatures, but inhibited growth of crested wheatgrass in interplanted treatments at 20-30 C. Plant growth and reproduction of P. neglectus on crested wheatgrass was similar in single and interplanted treatments at 20-30 C and 15-30 C, respectively.  相似文献

The moss Rhynchostegium pallidifolium (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, which often forms large pure colonies on soils and rocks, inhibited the hypocotyls and root growth of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) seedlings when R. pallidifolium and cress were incubated together on agar medium. The inhibition of cress was greater at the close position from the moss than at the far position from the moss. 3-Hydroxy-β-ionone was found in the medium and concentration of 3-hydroxy-β-ionone in the medium was greater at the close position than at the far position from R. pallidifolium, suggesting that R. pallidifolium may secrete 3-hydroxy-β-ionone into the medium. Exogenously applied 3-hydroxy-β-ionone inhibited the growth of hypocotyls and roots of cress at concentrations greater than 1 and 3 µM, respectively. Considering the growth inhibitory activity and concentrations found in the medium, 3-hydroxy-β-ionone was estimated to be able to cause 46–64% of the observed growth inhibition of cress hypocotyls and roots by R. pallidifolium. Therefore, 3-hydroxy-β-ionone may play an important role in the allelopathic activity of R. pallidifolium and may help competition with neighboring plants resulting in the formation of pure colonies.Key words: allelopathy, growth inhibitor, 3-hydroxy-β-ionone, phytotoxicity, Rhynchostegium pallidifoliumBryophytes are almost free from attack by micro-organism and insects, and their herbarium specimens usually do not need special treatment against insects and micro-organism. In addition, many bryophyte species have their own particular odors and tastes.1 These bryophyte characteristics are probably attributed to chemical constituents inherent in their structures. In fact, many biologically active substances, such as phenolics and terpenoides, have been isolated from bryophytes.25Several higher plants can not grow well in places where some bryophytes occurred. Some bryophytes dominate plant communities and form large pure colonies on soils and rocks on sunny places of lowland to upland areas including marshy places.1,6,7 Therefore, allelopathic chemical interactions may play an important role in the domination of bryophytes in these plant communities. In contrast to higher plants, however, there only was a preliminary study on allelopathy of bryophytes. The moss Rhynchostegium pallidifolium (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, which belongs to Brachytheciaceae family of Bryopsida (moss) class, Bryophyta division, also forms large pure colonies and possesses strong allelopathic activity. An allelopathic substance of the moss was recently isolated and identified as 3-hydroxy-β-ionone.8  相似文献

Understanding the history of forests and their species'' demographic responses to past disturbances is important for predicting impacts of future environmental changes. Tropical rainforests of the Guineo-Congolian region in Central Africa are believed to have survived the Pleistocene glacial periods in a few major refugia, essentially centred on mountainous regions close to the Atlantic Ocean. We tested this hypothesis by investigating the phylogeographic structure of a widespread, ancient rainforest tree species, Symphonia globulifera L. f. (Clusiaceae), using plastid DNA sequences (chloroplast DNA [cpDNA], psbA-trnH intergenic spacer) and nuclear microsatellites (simple sequence repeats, SSRs). SSRs identified four gene pools located in Benin, West Cameroon, South Cameroon and Gabon, and São Tomé. This structure was also apparent at cpDNA. Approximate Bayesian Computation detected recent bottlenecks approximately dated to the last glacial maximum in Benin, West Cameroon and São Tomé, and an older bottleneck in South Cameroon and Gabon, suggesting a genetic effect of Pleistocene cycles of forest contraction. CpDNA haplotype distribution indicated wide-ranging long-term persistence of S. globulifera both inside and outside of postulated forest refugia. Pollen flow was four times greater than that of seed in South Cameroon and Gabon, which probably enabled rapid population recovery after bottlenecks. Furthermore, our study suggested ecotypic differentiation—coastal or swamp vs terra firme—in S. globulifera. Comparison with other tree phylogeographic studies in Central Africa highlighted the relevance of species-specific responses to environmental change in forest trees.  相似文献

The allelopathic effects of the two sesquiterpene lactones, costunolide and parthenolide, isolated from the leaves of Magnolia grandiflora L. were evaluated on the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and onion (Allium cepa L.). Seed germination of the test species was significantly reduced at 500 μg/ml by both compounds. Both sesquiterpenes showed pronounced inhibition of root length of the test species and the inhibitory effect was concentration-dependent. In addition, shoot growth of the four species was significantly inhibited at all the concentrations tested (10–500 μg/ml). Parthenolide reduced germination and inhibited seedling growth more than costunolide. Inhibition of root growth was generally greater than that of shoot growth. The results encourage the use of these sesquiterpenes as models for development of new herbicides.  相似文献

The fern Gleichenia japonica is one of the most widely distributed fern and occurs throughout East to South Asia. The species often dominates plant communities by forming large monospecific colonies. However, the potential mechanism for this domination has not yet been described. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that allelochemicals are involved in the formation of G. japonica colonies. An aqueous methanol extract of G. japonica inhibited the growth of seedlings of garden cress (Lepidium sativum), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and timothy (Phleum pratense). Increasing extract concentration increased the inhibition. These results suggest that G. japonica contain allelopathic substances. The extract was then purified by several chromatographies with monitoring the inhibitory activity and two growth inhibitory substances causing the allelopathic effect were isolated. The chemical structures of the two substances were determined by spectral data to be a novel compound 3-O-β-allopyranosyl-13-O-β-fucopyranosyl-3β-hydroxymanool (1) and 18-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl-13-epitorreferol (2). These compounds inhibited the shoot and root growth of garden cress, lettuce, alfalfa (Medicago sativa), timothy, ryegrass and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) at concentrations greater than 0.1–1.0 mM. The concentrations required for 50% growth inhibition of root and shoot growth of these test plants ranged from 0.72 to 3.49 mM and 0.79 to 3.51 mM for compounds 1 and 2, respectively. Concentration of compounds 1 and 2 in soil under the pure colony of G. japonica was 4.9 and 5.7 mM, respectively, indicating concentrations over those required for 50% growth inhibition are potentially available under monocultural stands of these ferns. Therefore, these compounds may contribute to the allelopathic effects caused by presence of G. japonica and may thus contribute to the establishment of monocultural stands by this fern.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Litter is a key factor in structuring plant populations, through positive or negative interactions. The litter layer forms a mechanical barrier that is often strongly selective against individuals lacking hypocotyle plasticity. Litter composition also interacts with plant growth by providing beneficial nutrients or, inversely, by allowing harmful allelopathic leaching. As conspicuous litter fall accumulation is often observed under deciduous forests, interactions between tree litter and understorey plant populations are worthy of study.

Methods

In a 1-year ex-situ experiment, the effects of tree litter on the growth of Anemone nemorosa, a small perennial forest geophyte, were investigated. Three ‘litter quantity’ treatments were defined, representative of forest floor litter (199, 356·5 and 514 g m−2), which were crossed with five ‘litter composition’ treatments (Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Carpinus betulus, Q. petraea + F. sylvatica and Q. petraea + C. betulus), plus a no-litter control. Path analysis was then used to investigate the pathways linking litter characteristics and components of adult plant growth.

Key Results

As expected, the heavier the litter, the longer the petiole; rhizome growth, however, was not depreciated by the litter-induced petiole lengthening. Both rhizome mass increment and number of initiated buds marginally increased with the amount of litter. Rhizome mass increment was in fact determined primarily by leaf area and leaf life span, neither of which was unequivocally correlated with any litter characteristics. However, the presence of litter significantly increased leafing success: following a late frost event, control rhizomes growing in the absence of litter experienced higher leaf mortality before leaf unfolding.

Conclusions

The study questions the role of litter as a physical or chemical barrier to ground vegetation; to better understand this role, there is a need for ex-situ, longer-term experiments coupled with in-situ observations in the forest.  相似文献

采用盆栽试验,研究了核桃(Juglans regia)凋落叶分解对小麦(Triticum aestivum)生长及抗氧化酶系统、渗透调节物质含量的影响。试验设置A1(30 g/盆)、A2(60 g/盆)、A3(90 g/盆)和对照(CK)4个凋落叶水平,将各处理的凋落叶分别与8 kg土壤混合后装盆。

Orthosiphon stamineus (Java tea) has been widely used as traditional herb and several bioactive compounds against animal cells have been isolated. However, no bioactive compound against plants has been reported. Therefore, we investigated possible allelopathic properties and substances in O. stamineus. Aqueous methanol extracts of O. stamineus inhibited root and hypocotyl growth of cress (Lepidium sativum) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedlings. Increasing the extract concentration increased the inhibition, which suggests that O. stamineus may have allelopathic properties. When the extract was divided into an ethyl acetate and an aqueous fraction, the ethyl acetate fraction showed the stronger inhibitory effect. Thus, the ethyl acetate phase was further purified, and the main allelopathic substance was isolated and identified as 13-epi-orthosiphol N, a novel compound, by spectral data. 13-epi-Orthosiphol N inhibited root and hypocotyl growth of cress and lettuce at concentrations greater than 10 μmol/L. The concentrations required for 50% inhibition ranged from 41 to 102 μmol/L. These results suggest that 13-epi-orthosiphol N may be an allelochemical and main contributor to the growth inhibitory effect of O. stamineus and may have potential as a template for the development of new plant control substances.  相似文献

The nematicidal activities of ammonium sulfate, chicken litter and chitin, alone or in combination with neem (Azadirachta indica) extracts were tested against Meloidogyne javanica. Soil application of these amendments or the neem extracts alone did not reduce the root galling index of tomato plants or did so only slightly, but application of the amendments in combination with the neem extracts reduced root galling significantly. Soil analysis indicated that the neem extract inhibited the nitrification of the ammonium released from the amendments and extended the persistence of the ammonium concentrations in the soil. In microplot experiments, tomato plants were grown in pots filled with soils from the treated microplots. The galling indices of tomato plants grown in soil treated with ammonium sulfate or chicken litter in combination with the neem extract or a chemical nitrification inhibitor were far lower than those of plants grown in the control soil or in soil treated with chicken litter, neem extract or nitrification inhibitor alone. However, plants grown in the microplots showed only slight reductions in galling, probably because the soil amendments were inadequately mixed compared to their application in the pot experiments. The extended exposure of nematodes to ammonia as a result of nitrification inhibition by the neem extracts appeared to be the cause of the enhanced nematicidal activity of the ammonia-releasing amendments.  相似文献

Second-stage juveniles (I2) of Meloidogyne arenaria consumed more oxygen (P ≤ 0.05) than M. incognita J2, which in turn consumed more than M. javanica J2 (4,820, 4,530, and 3,970 μl per hour per g nematode dryweight, respectively). Decrease in oxygen consumption depended on the nematicide used. Except for aldicarb, there was no differential sensitivity among the three nematode species. Meloidogyne javanica had a greater percentage decrease (P ≤ 0.05) in oxygen uptake when treated with aldicarb, relative to the untreated control, than either M. arenaria or M. incognita. Meloidogyne javanica J2 had a greater degree of recovery from fenamiphos or aldicarb intoxication, after subsequent transfer to water, than did M. incognita. This finding may relate to differential sensitivity among Meloidogyne spp. in the field. Degree of respiratory inhibition and loss of nematode motility for M. javanica after exposure to the nematicides were positively correlated (P ≤ 0.05).  相似文献

Background and Aims

The most plausible explanation for treeline formation so far is provided by the growth limitation hypothesis (GLH), which proposes that carbon sinks are more restricted by low temperatures than by carbon sources. Evidence supporting the GLH has been strong in evergreen, but less and weaker in deciduous treeline species. Here a test is made of the GLH in deciduous–evergreen mixed species forests across elevational gradients, with the hypothesis that deciduous treeline species show a different carbon storage trend from that shown by evergreen species across elevations.

Methods

Tree growth and concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in foliage, branch sapwood and stem sapwood tissues were measured at four elevations in six deciduous–evergreen treeline ecotones (including treeline) in the southern Andes of Chile (40°S, Nothofagus pumilio and Nothofagus betuloides; 46°S, Nothofagus pumilio and Pinus sylvestris) and in the Swiss Alps (46°N, Larix decidua and Pinus cembra).

Key Results

Tree growth (basal area increment) decreased with elevation for all species. Regardless of foliar habit, NSCs did not deplete across elevations, indicating no shortage of carbon storage in any of the investigated tissues. Rather, NSCs increased significantly with elevation in leaves (P < 0·001) and branch sapwood (P = 0·012) tissues. Deciduous species showed significantly higher NSCs than evergreens for all tissues; on average, the former had 11 % (leaves), 158 % (branch) and 103 % (sapwood) significantly (P < 0·001) higher NSCs than the latter. Finally, deciduous species had higher NSC (particularly starch) increases with elevation than evergreens for stem sapwood, but the opposite was true for leaves and branch sapwood.

Conclusions

Considering the observed decrease in tree growth and increase in NSCs with elevation, it is concluded that both deciduous and evergreen treeline species are sink limited when faced with decreasing temperatures. Despite the overall higher requirements of deciduous tree species for carbon storage, no indication was found of carbon limitation in deciduous species in the alpine treeline ecotone.  相似文献

Integrins regulate cellular adhesion and transmit signals important for cell survival, proliferation and motility. They are expressed by glioma cells and may contribute to their malignant phenotype. Integrin inhibition may therefore represent a promising therapeutic strategy. GL-261 and SMA-560 glioma cells grown under standard conditions uniformly detached and formed large cell clusters after integrin gene silencing or pharmacological inhibition using EMD-121974, a synthetic Arg-Gly-Asp-motif peptide, or GLPG0187, a nonpeptidic integrin inhibitor. After 120 h, the clusters induced by integrin inhibition decayed and cells died. In contrast, when cells were cultured under stem cell (sphere) conditions, no disaggregation became apparent upon integrin inhibition, and cell death was not observed. As poly-HEMA-mediated detachment had similar effects on cell viability as integrin inhibition, we postulated that cell death may result from detachment alone, which was confirmed using various permissive and nonpermissive substrates. No surrogate markers of apoptosis were detected and electron microscopy confirmed that necrosis represents the dominant morphology of detachment-induced cell death. In addition, integrin inhibition resulted in the induction of autophagy that represents a survival signal. When integrins were inhibited in nonsphere glioma cells, the TGF-β pathway was strongly impaired, whereas no such effect was observed in glioma cells cultured under sphere conditions. Cell death induced by integrin inhibition was rescued by the addition of recombinant transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and accelerated by exposure to the TGF-β receptor inhibitor, SD-208. In summary, cell death following integrin inhibition is detachment mediated, represents an atypical form of anoikis involving necrosis as well as autophagy, and is modulated by TGF-β pathway activity.  相似文献

The ‘tree lobsters’ are an enigmatic group of robust, ground-dwelling stick insects (order Phasmatodea) from the subfamily Eurycanthinae, distributed in New Guinea, New Caledonia and associated islands. Its most famous member is the Lord Howe Island stick insect Dryococelus australis (Montrouzier), which was believed to have become extinct but was rediscovered in 2001 and is considered to be one of the rarest insects in the world. To resolve the evolutionary position of Dryococelus, we constructed a phylogeny from approximately 2.4 kb of mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data from representatives of all major phasmatodean lineages. Our data placed Dryococelus and the New Caledonian tree lobsters outside the New Guinean Eurycanthinae as members of an unrelated Australasian stick insect clade, the Lanceocercata. These results suggest a convergent origin of the ‘tree lobster’ body form. Our reanalysis of tree lobster characters provides additional support for our hypothesis of convergent evolution. We conclude that the phenotypic traits leading to the traditional classification are convergent adaptations to ground-living behaviour. Our molecular dating analyses indicate an ancient divergence (more than 22 Myr ago) between Dryococelus and its Australian relatives. Hence, Dryococelus represents a long-standing separate evolutionary lineage within the stick insects and must be regarded as a key taxon to protect with respect to phasmatodean diversity.  相似文献

The growth inhibitory effect of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants after crop harvested was investigated. Aqueous methanol extracts of the cucumber plants inhibited the growth of roots and shoots of cress (Lepidium sativum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), timothy (Pheleum pratense L.), crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.), Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv and Echinochloa colonum (L.) Link, and increasing the extract concentration increased the inhibition. These results suggest that cucumber plants may possess allelopathic activity. The aqueous methanol extract of cucumber plants was divided into ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions, and the growth inhibitory activity of ethyl acetate fraction was greater than that of aqueous fraction. Thus, ethyl acetate fraction was further purified and a main allopathically active substance in the fraction was isolated and determined as (S)-2-benzoyloxy-3-phenyl-1-propanol by spectral data. This substance inhibited root and shoot growth of cress seedlings at concentrations greater than 10 μM, and the concentration required for 50% inhibition of root and shoot growth was 21 and 23 μM, respectively. These results suggest that (S)-2-benzoyloxy-3-phenyl-1-propanol may contribute to the growth inhibitory effect of cucumber plants and may play an important role in cucumber allelopathy. Thus, cucumber plants may be potentially useful for weed management in a field setting. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

The interaction between Meloidogyne incognita and Criconemella xenoplax on nematode reproduction and growth of Lovell peach was studied in field microlots and the greenhouse. Meloidogyne incognita suppressed reproduction of C. xenoplax in both field and greenhouse experiments. Tree growth, as measured by trunk diameter, was reduced (P ≤ 0.05) in the presence of M. incognita as compared with C. xenoplax of the uninoculated control trees 26 months following inoculation. A similar response regarding dry root weight was also detected in greenhouse-grown seedlings after 5 months. The presence of C. xenoplax did not affect Lovell tree growth. A synergistic effect causing a reduction (P ≤ 0.05) in tree growth was recorded 26 and 38 months following inoculation. The presence of M. incognita increased levels of malonyl-1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid content in leaves of trees grown in field microplots 19 months after inoculaoon. Meloidogyne incognita appears to be a more dominant parasite than C. xenoplax on Lovell peach.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis with symptoms of congenital neurological and ocular diseases and acquired lymphadenitis, retinochoroiditis, and meningoencephalitis. Small molecules which block the activity of protein kinases were tested in in vitro culture of T. gondii to find new therapeutic drugs of safer and more effective than the combined administration of pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine that sometimes provoke lethal Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Among them, Gefitinib and Crizotinib inhibited intracellular growth of T. gondii in HeLa cells by counting the number of T. gondii per parasitophorous vacuolar membrane whereas Sunitinib did not. Gefitinib inhibited the growth of T. gondii in a dose-dependent manner over 5 µM up to the tolerable concentration of HeLa cells and halted the division of the parasite immediately from the time point of treatment. Gefitinib inhibition suggests that tyrosine kinases of EGFR family or other homologous kinases of the parasite itself may be the target to cause the block of T. gondii growth.  相似文献
