Owing to Saudi Arabia's high-income economy many Saudi families hire foreign housemaids. However, since the housemaids are potential carriers of intestinal parasites, hiring them increases the risk of transmission to the Saudi community. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in foreign housemaids in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Using direct wet mount and concentration by flotation, the stool samples of 169 housemaids were examined, and eleven parasite species, six helminths and five protozoans, were detected. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection was 20.11% (34/169). Twelve cases were infected with one intestinal helminth, 12 were infected with one intestinal protozoan, and 10 had polyparasitism. The most common intestinal parasites were Cryptosporidium spp. (n = 10), hookworms (n = 7), and T. Trichiura (n = 7). The findings highlight that intestinal parasites present an important public health concern for foreign housemaids in Saudi Arabia. More vigilance is thus required, and periodic follow-up should be exercised throughout foreign housemaids' stay in the country. 相似文献

A total of 292 randomly selected subjects belonging to two indigenous Arab tribes (Harbi and Ghamid) and two immigrant tribes (Mograbi and Mowallad), residents in Western Saudi Arabia, have been tested for genetic variants of six blood groups, four serum proteins, and five red cell enzyme systems. The distribution of the polymorphic systems was different between indigenous and immigrant tribes, and the present Arab population shows a considerable degree of admixture from the surrounding countries, in particular Africa. 相似文献

Background & objectivesCOVID-19 is an emerging pandemic that necessitates the implementation of effective infection prevention and control steps. The knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of healthcare professionals toward COVID-19 affect their compliance to prevention and control initiatives. During the evolving pandemic, we examined the KAP among healthcare professionals against COVID-19 in this research.Materials and methodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted among Riyadh region health care professionals from the beginning of December 2020 to the end of February 2021 using a validated self-administered questionnaire. The knowledge questionnaire contained questions about COVID-19 clinical characteristics, prevention, and management. The evaluation of attitudes and practices included questions regarding actions and adjustments in COVID-19 response activities. Knowledge scores were measured and compared using demographic characteristics, as well as attitudes and practices toward COVID-19. Using SPSS-IBM 25, bivariate statistics were done to analyze the data.Results146 healthcare professionals completed the survey. Physicians were the most prominent party in the survey, accounting for 74 (51 percent), followed by nurses 44 (30 percent) and pharmacists 28 (19 percent). The participants' average age was 39.69 ± 8.48 years. The participant's mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 11.43 ± 1.34, 3.89 ± 0.93, and 3.85 ± 0.81, respectively. With a positive attitude, the mean knowledge score was 11.52, and with proper practice, it was 11.32. With an improvement in knowledge, the attitude score increased significantly (r = 0.172, P = 0.001). Besides, there was a greater association between attitudes and practices (r = 0.170, P = 0.029). A significant enhancement in the practice score of the professionals was noted with an increase in knowledge score (r = 0.095, P = 0.010), an indicator for a positive correlation between practice and knowledge scores.Interpretation & conclusionHealthcare practitioners have a good understanding of COVID-19. Improved knowledge and a positive attitude toward COVID-19 infection are linked to appropriate practice. There is a need for more manpower, better COVID-19 management training, and strategies to reduce anxiety among healthcare professionals. 相似文献

ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to compare the association between mental well-being between obese (classes 1 and 2), over-weight and non-obese population-based individualsMethodsA population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia. A total of 1019 Saudi nationals aged ≥ 18 years participated in the survey. BMI scores were used to categorize participants into three groups: Obese, overweighted and non-obese/non-overweight. Mental well-being was evaluated by using the validated Arabic version of the General Health Questionnaire version 12 (GHQ-12).ResultsWe used total GHQ score (Mean=12; SD=5.23) to compare mental well-being between the four BMI class categories. The overall one-way ANOVA model was statistically significant (F = 7.018, d = 6, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, after adjusting for sociodemographic variables, diabetes and smoking statuses we found that higher psychological distress (as evident by a higher total GHQ score) was associated with higher BMI. The unstandardized Beta regression coefficient = 2.627; P = 0.034). Females were more likely to have higher psychological distress than males (unstandardized Beta = 1.466, P = 0.003). Job status whether being unemployed or ‘civilian’ (civil worker) was significantly associated with higher psychological distress (unstandardized Beta = 1.405, P = 0.041). Being diabetic has a 1.6 times higher risk of psychological distress (unstandardized Beta = 1.604, P = 0.027).ConclusionThe study highlights the public health implications of psychological distress amongst individuals with overweight and obesity in Saudi Arabia. Future longitudinal studies should explore the temporality of this relationship. 相似文献

BackgroundThe prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Saudi Arabia is predicted to exceed 30% by 2030. NAFLD leads to liver fibrosis, thus increasing morbidity and health care burden. Obesity and diabetes have been strongly associated with NAFLD in different cities in Saudi Arabia.ObjectivesTherefore, we aim to determine the prevalence rate of NAFLD and specific risk factors for NAFLD among patients of tertiary care hospital of Taif city.Material and methodsWe retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients for two years, between Feb 2017 and Feb 2019, (n = 100) referred to the hepatology clinic at King Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital in Taif. The diagnosis of NAFLD was based on the radiology report for patients who were aged >20 years old. Other parameters including fasting blood glucose (FBG), platelets count, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and total bilirubin were statistically analyzed.ResultsWe found that 40% (P < 0.05) of all patients had NAFLD. The results revealed that a significantly high number of patients with NAFLD have high FBG levels (75%, P < 0.0001) and total bilirubin (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, platelet count was significantly reduced in patients with NAFLD (P < 0.05).ConclusionNAFLD can be a serious health problem in the Taif region. In addition, high FBG is a significant specific risk factor for NAFLD. Health care providers should pay more attention to limiting the prevalence of NAFLD and its risk factors. 相似文献

BackgroundIn late 2019, cases of severe pneumonia with unidentified etiology began to emerge in Wuhan, China, before progressively spreading first nationally and then globally. The current study sought to investigate the seroprevalence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among blood donors in Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia. To our knowledge, this is the first study in Saudi Arabia to screen blood donors who were not known to be previously infected with SARS-CoV-2.MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional study to assess individuals who donated blood to the central blood bank in Al-Madinah between mid-May and mid-July 2020. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was designed and established to detect antibodies directed against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in serum samples. A total of 1,212 healthy blood donors participated in this study. The donors were males and met the requirements for blood donation during the COVID-19 pandemic period in Saudi Arabia.ResultsThe SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among blood donors in Al-Madinah was 19.31% (n = 234/1212; 95% confidence interval: 17.12%–21.64%). No statistically significant difference was identified in seropositivity according to age. However, significant differences (p < 0.001) were identified according to ABO blood groups, with those with type A blood presenting the highest rate of seropositivity (29.18%) compared with the other blood groups (12.65% for type B, 16.36% for type AB, and 15.11% for type O).ConclusionA high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was detected among blood donors in Al-Madinah, which indicated a high level of exposure to the virus within the population. This further suggested that as high as one-fifth of the population may have acquired innate immunity against the virus. 相似文献

Unexpected antibodies, also called irregular antibodies, are not known to exist in a person's serum before testing. This research aims to assess the prevalence of unexpected antibodies and their correlation with several clinical conditions. This cross-sectional prospective study, undertaken from June 2019 to June 2020, included ABO, Rh grouping, cross-matching, and antibody screening. Antibody identification was performed only on patients who tested positive in the screening test. From a total of 9764 participants who were screened for unexpected antibodies, 107 (1.1%) tested positive. The Rh blood group system antibodies were the most frequent, particularly anti-D. There was also a significant correlation between the unexpected antibodies and history of transfusion, pregnancy, and autoimmune diseases as P ≤ 0.05. The most prominent unexpected antibodies in the study belong to the Rh system (Anti-D). Moreover, as a result of the strong correlation between the unexpected antibodies as well as the history of transfusion, pregnancy, and autoimmune diseases, the highest safety criteria must be followed during the transfusion of blood to patients with these clinical conditions. 相似文献

BackgroundThe patients who require transfusion are prevalent in the Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. Therefore, it is essential to know the frequency of blood group antigens in such a population. The Kidd blood group system (JK) has two antithetical antigens, Jka and Jkb. Antibodies to these antigens may result in delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions. The present study investigated the frequencies of Jka and Jkb and the phenotypes among Saudi blood donors living in the Jazan Province.MethodsOne hundred and forty-three samples from anonymous Saudi volunteer blood donors in the Jazan Province were serotype to detect Jka and Jkb using gel card technology and determine the phenotypes of the JK blood group system.ResultsThe prevalence of Jka and Jkb antigens were 90.64% (n = 126) and 69.40% (n = 93), respectively. The JK phenotypes were 34.96% Jk(a + b ? ) (n = 51), 12.59% Jk(a ? b + ) (n = 18), 52.45% Jk(a + b + ) (n = 75), and 0% Jk(a ? b ? ). The frequencies of the JK phenotypes in the Jazan population were significantly different from those in the Asian population (P < 0.05).ConclusionsWe reported the frequencies of the Jka and Jkb antigens and the distribution of the JK phenotypes in a group of Saudi blood donors in the Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. The phenotype Jk(a + b + ) was the most common among the study population. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the significance of identifying the frequency of JK antigens and phenotypes in the provinces of Saudi Arabia. 相似文献

BackgroundBabies to women eligible for trial of labor after a cesarean (TOLAC) are sometimes delivered by cesarean section (CS). To obtain clinicians’ attitudes and beliefs about TOLAC, this study was designed to investigate the views of clinicians when advising TOLAC-eligible pregnant women about TOLAC, and to explore their reasons in favor of or against TOLAC.MethodsInterviews were carried out individually (face-to-face) with clinicians using a specially designed questionnaire to collect data from obstetricians in the Western Region of Saudi. Regression analysis was used as appropriate.ResultsAmong the 183 obstetricians included in the current study, approximately 79.2% were against offering TOLAC. However, most of the physicians (89.1%) were in favor of offering TOLAC to patients who had had a successful vaginal birth after CS. significant associations were found between physicians’ opposition to TOLAC and medical and most non-medical factors.ConclusionClinicians should recognize that the critical role they play in the delivery decision-making process and in boosting women’s confidence in TOLAC may be key to increasing the rate of TOLAC. 相似文献

Papio hamadryas was surveyed throughout its range in Saudi Arabia and was observed at altitudes ranging from 0 to 2300 m.
Wild populations occur along the whole range of altitude, while commensal populations are only found above 850 m altitude.
No variation in group size was found with altitude. Comparison of wild and commensal populations showed the following. (1)
Their composition in terms of age and sex classes, overall adult sex ratios, and group size does not significantly differ.
(2) Groups of both populations include, in similar proportions, three types of parties: one-male units (>70%), two-male units
(>13%), and a few other units of variable composition. (3) The mean size of commensal parties is significantly larger than
in the wild population; specifically one-male units are larger in the commensal population due to a larger number of females
per male. Thus, female distribution in commensal groups is more inequitable than that in wild groups. (4) Finally, the number
of females included in two-male units increases with altitude. These differences are discussed in terms of food availability
and predator pressure and are compared with results obtained on other Arabian and Ethiopian populations. 相似文献

Factor XII (FXII) deficiency is a rare genetic blood disorder. It can lead to a higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis or acquired thrombotic disorders than the general population. This retrospective study evaluated patients who opted for surgery and were found to have abnormal clotting profiles and clotting factors on preoperative routine blood. Patients were included regardless of whether they were symptomatic or asymptomatic. The cohort comprised 115 patients with a mean FXII level of 128.04 ± 36.93%. Two (1.79%) patients, both of whom were women, had FXII levels <60%. The mean FXII level was 58 ± 1.41 (range, 57–59%) in this group. The present study shows the prevalence of FXII in the asymptomatic Saudi population. The results provide the normal range for FXII. The findings of our study provide the basis for diagnosing F XII deficiency in the asymptomatic Saudi population. 相似文献

SynopsisSevere Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus2 (SARS-CoV2) provoked alertness globally. Existing pandemic eruption of infections with SARS-CoV2 has been phrased as coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19). Worldwide pneumonia outburst attributable to new SARS-CoV2 alleged to be originated in Wuhan city of China and has affectation of enormous danger regarding civic wellbeing. As of 11 March 2020, international death toll owing to outburst of new coronavirus was approximately 3,800, and about 110,000 have been declared as confirmed cases. The novel SARS-CoV2 demonstrated competence with respect to human to human communication; therefore depicted exponential intensification of cases. As of March 23, there are 374,513 collective cases of global infections; more than 16,350 deaths and number of recovered cases is 101,554. Now Europe has turn out into new epicenter of lethal coronavirus.More than one third of the covid 19 cases are currently outside China. Presently Italy is one of worst hit countries followed by Spain. The rapid global widespread of novel covid-19 viruses lead to World Health Organization (WHO) to declare outbreak as pandemic. Given to seriousness of present scenario an accurate and rapid classification of noxious pathogenic virus is important which will lend a hand in opting for best fitting drugs. The screening program will aid saving people’s lives and help to put off the pandemic situation. The scientists and researchers should collaborate nationally and internationally to win the battle against novel covid-19. We aimed to represent covid 19 outburst scenario in general and Saudi Arabia in particular. This short review report very briefly highlights covid-19 syndromes; propagation; Middle East outburst, natural products as cure for viral diseases, probable psychosomatic effects, protective measures and Islamic wisdom. SARS-CoV2 is subsequent coronavirus outburst that perturbs Middle East, after SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV which has been originated in kingdom of Saudi Arabia in year 2002 and 2012 respectively. The report covers information and developments till 23rd of March 2020 on basis of current published data and studies published on different scientific web-pages. 相似文献

AimThe potential effects of heavy metals on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remain unknown. We investigated the sex-specific relationships of blood lead (BPb), mercury (BHg), and cadmium (BCd) levels with hepatic steatosis (HS) and fibrosis (HF).MethodWe included 4420 participants from the 2016–2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. High-risk alcoholics and patients with chronic hepatitis B or C infections or liver cirrhosis were excluded. We calculated the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) values; we defined the presence of HS and HF as an HSI ≥ 36 and FIB-4 score >2.67, respectively. We adjusted for age, smoking and alcohol consumption statuses, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, and BPb, BHg, and BCd levels.ResultIn males (n = 1860), the HSI was correlated negatively with the BPb level and positively with the BHg level (both p < 0.01). The FIB-4 score was correlated positively with the BPb and BCd levels (both p < 0.01). In females (n = 2560), the HSI and FIB-4 score were correlated positively with the BPb, BHg, and BCd levels (all p < 0.01). After adjustments, the BHg level increased the risk of HS in both males (OR = 1.065, p = 0.003) and females (OR = 1.061, p = 0.048), and the BCd level increased the risk of HF in females (OR = 1.668, p = 0.012).ConclusionBlood heavy metal levels were generally correlated positively with the HSI and FIB4 score, more so in females than males. The BHg level was associated with HS in males and females, and the BCd level was associated with HF in females. Further studies on NAFLD progression according to heavy metal status and sex are warranted. 相似文献

Preeclampsia is a serious medical complication during pregnancy. In response to an increasing number of preeclamptic cases and scarcity of data concerning the interrelation between trace element levels and preeclampsia, we carried out a hospital based case–control study in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to study the correlation between levels of serum trace elements and risk of preeclampsia. One hundred and twenty pregnant women were enrolled in this study and divided into three groups of 40 each—Control group, HR group (women at high risk of preeclampsia) and PET group (Preeclampsia group). Serum trace element levels were estimated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer. The analysis found that mean values of Ca, Mg and Zn were 90.08 ± 6.38, 19.33 ± 3.32 and 1.30 ± 0.83 mg/L respectively in normotensive control and 77.85 ± 4.47, 15.44 ± 1.43 and 0.98 ± 0.63 mg/L respectively in the HR group. The mean values of Ca, Mg and Zn in the preeclamptic group were 70.37 ± 4.66, 13.58 ± 1.98 and 0.67 ± 0.59 mg/L, respectively. Interelement analysis reflected a negative correlation between Ca and Mg and between Mg and Zn whereas positive correlation between Ca and Zn in preeclamptic women. However the correlation was not statistically significant. In conclusion, our study suggests that decreased levels of these trace elements in serum may act as predisposing factors in pathogenesis of Preeclampsia. 相似文献

The conservation of biological diversity is gaining an increasing amount of global attention. In particular, in Saudi Arabia, conservation actions have become a topic of focus, with many successful initiatives being implemented. Despite these efforts, several wild animal species in Saudi Arabia still require special attention to ensure their long-term conservation and survival. If not effectively controlled, certain challenges could threaten the conservation status of local wildlife. Various conservation strategies are employed in Saudi Arabia to control these challenges, minimize their influence, and promote conservation action. Such strategies have proven to be effective; however, further efforts are still required, particularly outside protected areas. The conservation of species in critical situations primarily depends on the creation of protected areas and human intervention. Wildlife conservation is a collaborative effort; every individual has a role to play in protecting wild animals in each unique ecosystem to ensure their survival and the sustainability of their habitats for future generations. 相似文献

The cryostoring of embryogenic tissue of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L. cv. Sagai) was examined through dehydrated-encapsulation, vitrification, and vitrification-encapsulation. The most extreme regeneration rate (53.33%) of epitomized, cryostored liquid nitrogen (+LN) treated embryos was observed when pre-embryonic masses were hatched with 0.5 M sucrose for 48 h pursued by 6 h air drying out. The most noteworthy survival rate (80.0%) of epitomized, cryopreserved embryonic cluster came about when calli were hatched with 0.3 or 0.7 M sucrose for 48 h pursued by four hours of lack of hydration, or with 0.5 M sucrose for 48 h without air drying out or with 2 h of air drying out. Following cryopreservation utilizing the embodiment vitrification convention, the most astounding survival (86.7%) as well as the greatest growth (46.7%) was accomplished when the typified vitrified, cryopreserved calli were treated with Vitrification Solution 2 for plants (PVS2) for 60 min at 25 °C. Cryopreservation utilizing the vitrification convention brought about the most extreme recuperation of 53.3%, when vitrified-cryopreserved calli were subjected to PVS2 solution for 30 min at 25 °C. Most extreme (40%) regeneration of vitrified, cryopreserved embryonic calli was seen when these calli were treated with PVS2 solution for 60 min at 25 °C. The outcome got amid this investigation of regrowth after cryopreservation of the cv. Sagai was over the base suitable for a cryo-germplasm bank. Recovery and regrowth were above 30% for all the techniques developed for the cv. Sagai. 相似文献

BackgroundPatient’s awareness of their clinical and laboratory parameters is an indicator of the degree of involvement in achieving their management goals. This investigation aimed to identify awareness of patients affected by chronic non-communicable diseases of their clinical and laboratory parameters and factors associated with the awareness.MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional investigation conducted in the Jazan region, between January and August 2020. Data was collected during phone interviews utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to estimate the likelihood of awareness of each clinical and laboratory parameter according to the measured demographic variables.ResultsThe total number of recruited patients was 675. The mean age of participants was 53.7 years and the 28.7% of patients were illiterate. About 17% of the patient do not attend follow-up visits to any healthcare provider. When patients were asked about their parameters, 87% of them were able to report their body weight and 74% were able to report their height. However, less than half of patients were aware of their glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c) (271/675 patients) and systolic blood pressure (BP) level (329/ 675 patients), and a minority were aware of their total cholesterol level (71/675 patients). Being female, resident in a rural area, illiterate, and older than 53 was strongly associated with high odds of limited awareness about their own clinical and laboratory parameters (P values < 0.05).ConclusionAwareness of patients affected by chronic non-communicable diseases of their own clinical and laboratory parameters in the Jazan region is sub-optimal where this limited awareness is likely to be associated with the lower engagement of patients with achieving their desired management targets. 相似文献
