To examine the influence of pulmonary blood flow (Qp) on spontaneous ventilation (VE), we isolated the systemic and pulmonary circulations and controlled the arterial blood gases and blood flow (Q) in each circuit as we measured VE. Each dog was anesthetized with ketamine and maintained with halothane. Systemic Q was drained from the right atrium and pumped through an oxygenator and heat exchanger and returned to the aorta. An identical bypass was established for the pulmonary circulation, draining blood from the left atrium and pumping it to the pulmonary artery. The heart was fibrillated, all cannulas were brought through the chest wall, and the median sternotomy was closed. The dog was then allowed to breathe spontaneously. The arterial O2 partial pressure (PO2) of both circuits was maintained greater than 300 Torr. Systemic Q was maintained at 0.080 l X min-1 X kg-1. Initially the arterial CO2 partial pressure (PCO2) of both circuits was set at 40 Torr as Qp was varied randomly between approximately 0.025 and 0.175 l X min-1 X kg-1. The average VE-Qp relationship was linear with a slope of 1.45 (P less than 0.0005). Increasing the arterial PCO2 of both circuits to 60 Torr elevated VE an average of 0.37 l X min-1 X kg-1 at each level of Qp (P less than 0.0005). Vagotomy abolished the effect of Qp on VE. Increasing Qp affected the systemic arterial PCO2-VE response curve by shifting it upward without altering its slope. These results demonstrate that increases in Qp are associated with increases in VE. This phenomenon may contribute to exercise hyperpnea.  相似文献

Laser Raman spectra of a mixture of yeast t-RNA's are examined as a function of temperature and after total alkaline hydrolysis to mononucleotides; the data are interpreted on the basis of extensive preliminary studies previously reported from this laboratory on the Raman spectral properties of numerous synthetic model compounds. Since the Raman intensities observed are extremely sensitive to conformational changes in the nucleic acid, much useful structural information can be obtained.  相似文献

The impact of the fish population on trophic properties of lake water, was experimentally studied in an oligotrophic Swedish forest lake. Biotic changes following fish removal resulted in a development in oligotrophic direction as shown by the drop in limnetic primary production, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and the increased transparency.  相似文献

The gill withdrawal reflex (GWR) to direct gill stimulation was studied in sexually mature Aplysia and in those older by at least two months. The GWR threshold in old Aplysia was five- to sevenfold higher than that in mature animals. In the habituation paradigm, the GWR amplitude decremented rapidly to zero in old animals whereas in mature animals it persisted for at least ten trials. The GWR could not be dishabituated in old animals. The GWR is an age-dependent behavior in that parieto-visceral ganglion suppression of the GWR appears to increase with age. Also the electrophysiological properties of two neurons in the parieto-visceral ganglion were compared in the two age groups: L7 a neuron which dishabituates the GWR in mature and not in old animals; and R2 which manifests cytological changes with age. In old animals L7′s input resistance was lower, the time constant was increased, and the size of the psp evoked by gill stimulation was smaller than those of mature L7s. Similar membrane changes with age were measured in R2. Soma size of L7 was approximately the same in the two age groups as was that of R2. The physiological parameters of neurons of known function continue to change during postmetamorphic life of Aplysia.  相似文献

Changes in bone structure as a function of age have been studied by simple inspection, x-ray imaging, stereo-photography, deep field optical microscopy, circularly polarised light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including both topographic and compositional backscattered electron (BSE) imaging modes. The study of bone as a three-dimensional object, rather than in thin sections, enables us to envisage modelling and remodelling processes in context. The study of ultra-flat block surfaces permits the acquisition of data from an effectively very thin layer in the block face, and to examine bone as a spectrum of tissue types varying in the degree of mineralisation. Particular attention has been paid in our earlier studies to the iliac crest, lumbar vertebral bodies, femoral mid-shaft, neck and head and parietal and frontal skull bones. Recently, we have compared findings from these sites with observations on the mandible. We conclude, from our new imaging data, that common generalisations about the changes in bone in ageing and osteoporosis are too simplified, and that the mandible differs sufficiently from post-cranial skeletal sites that it would be unwise to extrapolate from findings in the jaw to the circumstances elsewhere.  相似文献

The visible and near-uv absorption and circular dichroic spectra were determined for spinach and poplar plastocyanin under a variety of conditions. The visible spectra showed that the copper center was invariant to changes in species, chemical modification with ethylenediamine, and addition of high concentrations of salt [2.7 M (NH4)2SO4]. In contrast, the near-uv spectra were sensitive to these conditions. Reduction of plastocyanin also altered its near-uv absorption and circular dichroic spectra. It is unlikely that these spectral changes were due to charge transfer bands since the near-uv CD spectrum of apo-plastocyanin was almost identical to that of reduced plastocyanin. There were no corresponding changes in the far-uv spectra which monitor protein secondary structure. The most likely explanation is that the protein has a flexible tertiary conformation. Conformational changes may be important in regulating electron transport. If plastocyanin is a mobile electron carrier, differential binding of the oxidized and reduced forms of plastocyanin to its reaction partners cytochrome f and P700 could facilitate electron transport.  相似文献
