This study attempts to evaluate the effects of deviation of external nose to nasal airflow patterns. Four typical subjects were chosen for model reconstruction based on computed tomography images of undeviated, S-shaped deviated, C-shaped deviated and slanted deviated noses. To study the hypothetical influence of deviation of external nasal wall on nasal airflow (without internal blockage), the collapsed region along the turbinate was artificially reopened in all the three cases with deviated noses. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out in models of undeviated, original deviated and reopened nasal cavities at both flow rates of 167 and 500 ml/s. The shape of the anterior nasal roof was found to be collapsed on one side of the nasal airways in all the deviated noses. High wall shear stress region was found around the collapsed anterior nasal roof. The nasal resistances in cavities with deviated noses were considerably larger than healthy nasal cavity. Patterns of path-line distribution and wall shear stress distribution were similar between original deviated and reopened models. In conclusion, the deviation of an external nose is associated with the collapse of one anterior nasal roof. The crooked external nose induced a larger nasal resistance compared to the undeviated case, while the internal blockage of the airway along the turbinates further increased it.  相似文献

One Health is an effective approach for the management of zoonotic disease in humans, animals and environments. Examples of the management of bacterial zoonoses in Europe and across the globe demonstrate that One Health approaches of international surveillance, information-sharing and appropriate intervention methods are required to successfully prevent and control disease outbreaks in both endemic and non-endemic regions. Rapid developments in sensor technology have facilitated the production of devices--known as electronic noses--that can detect and discriminate the production profiles of volatile compounds from microbial infections in situ. Such qualitative and semi-quantitative approaches could have a significant role in the early diagnosis and detection of microbial diseases. Using artificial intelligence and web-based knowledge systems, electronic noses might also have a valuable role in monitoring disease epidemiology.  相似文献

This work examines the use of Hybrid Intelligent Systems in the pattern recognition system of an artificial nose. The connectionist approaches Multi-Layer Perceptron and Time Delay Neural Networks, and the hybrid approaches Feature-Weighted Detector and Evolving Neural Fuzzy Networks were investigated. A Wavelet Filter is evaluated as a preprocessing method for odor signals. The signals generated by an artificial nose were composed by an array of conducting polymer sensors and exposed to two different odor databases.  相似文献

We have developed an improved method of straightening DNA molecules for use in optical restriction mapping. The DNA was straightened on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-coated glass slides using surface tension generated by a moving meniscus. In our method the meniscus motion was controlled mechanically, which provides advantages of speed and uniformity of the straightened molecules. Variation in the affinity of the silanized surfaces for DNA was compensated by precoating the slide with single-stranded non-target blocking DNA. A small amount of MgCl2 added to the DNA suspension increased the DNA-surface affinity and was necessary for efficient restriction enzyme digestion of the straightened surface-bound DNA. By adjusting the amounts of blocking DNA and MgCl2, we prepared slides that contained many straight parallel DNA molecules. Straightened lambda phage DNA (48 kb) bound to a slide surface was digested by EcoRI restriction endonuclease, and the resulting restriction fragments were imaged by fluorescence microscopy using a CCD camera. The observed fragment lengths showed excellent agreement with their predicted lengths.  相似文献

Robots are needed to locate the sources of toxic chemical plumes. Lobsters, which track odor plumes for many ecologically crucial activities, can provide inspiration for robot designers. Before accurate search strategies for robots can be developed, how odor molecules are captured by the lobster's chemosensors must be understood. A recent study by Koehl et al. shows how lobster olfactory antennules alter the patterns of concentration in turbulent odor plumes during odor sampling.  相似文献

The use of synthetic materials for biomedical applications still presents issues owing to the potential for unfavourable safety characteristics. Currently, there is increasing interest in using natural, marine-derived raw materials for bone tissue engineering. In our study, the endoskeleton of the mollusc Sepia, i.e. cuttlebone (CB), was used with regenerated cellulose (RC) to prepare three-dimensional composite bone grafts. CB microparticles were mechanically immobilised within a cellulose gel, resulting in a macroporous structure upon lyophilisation. The interconnected porous structure of the regenerated cellulose/cuttlebone (RC/CB) composite was evaluated by micro-computed tomography. The porosity of the composite was 80%, and the pore size predominantly ranged from 200 to 500 μm. The addition of CB microparticles increased the specific scaffold surface by almost threefold and was found to be approximately 40 mm?1. The modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of the RC/CB composite were 4.0?±?0.6 and 22.0?±?0.9 MPa, respectively. The biocompatibility of the prepared RC/CB composite with rat hepatocytes and extensor digitorum longus muscle tissue was evaluated. The obtained data demonstrated that both the composite and cellulose matrix samples were non-cytotoxic and had no damaging effects. These results indicate that this RC/CB composite is a novel material suitable for bone tissue-engineering applications.  相似文献
