Case records of 683 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) submitted to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (Georgia, USA) for diagnostic purposes from 1971 to 1989 were reviewed for the occurrence of pyogenic infections of the central nervous system, specifically intracranial abscessation or suppurative meningoencephalitis. These conditions, either alone or in combination, were diagnosed in 24 of 683 (4%) deer. Thirteen genera of bacteria were isolated; the most frequent species was Actinomyces pyogenes. The disease was strongly sex biased (P less than 0.01); 88% of the cases occurred in males. Cases were more prevalent (P less than 0.05) in older bucks; the median age of infected bucks was 3.2 yr, and 71% of these were greater than or equal to 2.5-yr-old. Intracranial abscessation/suppurative meningoencephalitis cases accounted for 20% of the diagnoses among 56 bucks greater than or equal to 3-yr-old. Cases were seasonal, occurring only from October to April. Characteristic necrosis, erosion, and pitting of skull bones were common, and this bone damage may be useful in determining cause of death when only skeletal remains are found. Males, especially older bucks, apparently are predisposed to intracranial abscessation/suppurative meningoencephalitis because of the cycle of antler development and behavioral traits associated with reproduction. The strong bias toward prime age bucks suggests that these infections could specifically hinder management strategies designed to produce populations with older buck age structures.  相似文献

Leukoencephalomalacia similar to equine leukoencephalomalacia occurred in a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from North Carolina. The deer was recumbent and stuporous when presented for examination. It was believed that the disease resulted from ingestion of moldy field corn, infected with Fusarium moniliforme.  相似文献

Two Theileria cervi SSU rRNA gene sequence Types, F and G, from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and elk (Cervus elaphus canadensis) isolates in North America were confirmed. Previously, nucleotide sequencing through a single variable (V4) region showed the presence of SSU rRNA gene Types F and G in T. cervi isolates from white-tailed deer and an elk. In this study, both sequence types were found in four T. cervi isolates (two from deer and two from elk). Microheterogeneity only appeared in the Type G gene, resulting in Subtypes G1, G2 and G3. Subtype G1 was found in two elk and one white-tailed deer T. cervi isolate; Subtypes G2 and G3 were found in a white-tailed deer T. cervi isolate. The Type F SSU rRNA genes were identical in nucleotide sequence in both elk and white-tailed deer T. cervi isolates. The high degree of conservation in the Type F variable regions may be exploited to design specific oligonucleotide primers for parasite detection by the polymerase chain reaction in cervine or tick hosts.  相似文献

Four species of ticks were collected from 537 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), examined during the hunting seasons (November to January) of 1988-89 and 1989-90 at selected locations in Alabama (USA). Ixodes scapularis was the most common tick recovered (2,060 specimens) and infested 54% of the deer. Dermacentor albipictus was the second most frequent tick (1,253 specimens) and infested 15% of the deer. Amblyomma americanum was the third most frequent tick (315 specimens) and infested 24% of the deer; this was the only species of tick collected from deer at all sampling locations. Amblyomma maculatum was an infrequent parasite (five specimens) and infested only 1% of the deer; this tick species was only recorded during the 1989-90 season. Year-to-year and geographical differences in tick infestation parameters were noted. The data are compared with those reported for previous surveys of ticks infesting white-tailed deer in Alabama and adjacent states.  相似文献

Experimental infection of white-tailed deer fawns with Salmonella meleagridis was accomplished. The fawns suffered clinical illness, similar to spontaneous cases observed in the field. This disease may be an important factor in fawn survival in wild herds based on the frequency with which Salmonellae could be isolated in wild fawns. The clinical disease was acute, characterized by rapid depression and dehydration. Death ensued in three of eight experimental cases. The survivors suffered clinical illness.  相似文献

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were successfully infected with Haemonchus contortus of sheep origin. Individual deer in each of three groups were inoculated with 0, 25,000, and 100,000 larvae respectively. Severity of infection was related to dose and signs of infection were most obvious in the heavily inoculated animals. Infected deer were weak, emaciated, and anemic, similar to the clinical response in sheep. Hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and total serum protein values for both infected groups were significantly lower than for the controls. Inhibition of larval growth was noted in both infected groups, but was most pronounced in the group which received 100,000 larvae. Inhibition of egg production was also noted in this group. The potential importance of H. cortortus in deer populations was discussed.  相似文献

Twin white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns captured in Morris County, New Jersey, displayed papular, darkly pigmented scabs principally on the skin overlying the nasal bones, dentary, commissure of the lips and ears. Histopathological and bacterial examinations revealed Dermatophilus congolensis. The epidermitis caused by this bacterium apparently had developed within the first 12 to 14 days after birth and had begun to regress by one month of age. The location of the lesions suggested transmission during nursing from an infected doe. This is believed to be the first confirmed report of this zoonotic disease in white-tailed deer, with isolation of the etiologic agent, outside the State of New York. Epizootiological considerations are discussed.  相似文献

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.  相似文献

For many plant species in eastern North America, short observed seed dispersal distances (ranging up to a few tens of meters) fail to explain rapid rates of invasion and migration. This discrepancy points to a substantial gap in our knowledge of the mechanisms by which seeds are dispersed long distances. We investigated the potential for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimm.), the dominant large herbivore in much of eastern North America, to disperse seeds via endozoochory. This is the first comprehensive study of seed dispersal by white-tailed deer, despite a vast body of research on other aspects of their ecology. More than 70 plant species germinated from deer feces collected over a 1-year period in central New York State, USA. Viable seeds included native and alien herbs, shrubs, and trees, including several invasive introduced species, from the full range of habitat types in the local flora. A mean of >30 seeds germinated per fecal pellet group, and seeds were dispersed during all months of the year. A wide variety of presumed dispersal modes were represented (endo- and exozoochory, wind, ballistic, ant, and unassisted). The majority were species with small-seeded fruits having no obvious adaptations for dispersal, underscoring the difficulty of inferring dispersal ability from diaspore morphology. Due to their broad diet, wide-ranging movements, and relatively long gut retention times, white-tailed deer have tremendous potential for effecting long-distance seed dispersal via ingestion and defecation. We conclude that white-tailed deer represent a significant and previously unappreciated vector of seed dispersal across the North American landscape, probably contributing an important long-distance component to the seed shadows of hundreds of plant species, and providing a mechanism to help explain rapid rates of plant migration.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at  相似文献

The heads of 137 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were collected on the opening day of the 1996 Missouri (USA) fire-arms deer season and surveyed for the presence of meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis). Eighteen percent of the deer examined were infected. Mean intensity of infection was 2.0 (range 1-7). There were no significant differences of infection or mean intensity when deer were classified and compared according to sex or age class.  相似文献

Nine white-tailed deer and six sheep were experimentally exposed to the California BTV-8 strain of bluetongue virus. The infections were fatal for seven of the nine deer. An additional deer died from exposure to an isolate of bluetongue virus from bighorn sheep. Clinical signs and lesions of bluetongue in deer were described. The incubation period, signs and lesions of bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease of deer appear to be similar. Virus isolations were made from the blood and a variety of tissues of exposed deer and identified as bluetongue virus. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in all of the convalescent sera.  相似文献

Silastic rods containing either melengestrol acetate (MGA) or levonorgestrel (LN) were placed in anestrous white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis) does to evaluate the contraceptive efficacy of the implants over a 2 yr period. Implants of MGA were placed in five does during mid-pregnancy to evaluate the effect of this treatment on pregnancy, parturition and lactation. Pregnancies were not observed in the five animals implanted with MGA during anestrus. Three of five does implanted with LN became pregnant in the first season. Pregnancy was not interrupted in the five pregnant does implanted with MGA and it was necessary to remove the implants and treat the does with an estrogen to achieve parturition. One of five fawns was delivered alive and was raised by the doe. MGA was effective for 2 yr as a contraceptive in white-tailed deer, LN was ineffective as used, and MGA placed in pregnant does delayed or prevented normal parturition and thus should not be used in pregnant deer.  相似文献
