Sporocycts of the "pygmaeus" microphallides (Microphallus piriformes) are localized in hepatopancreas and gonads of Littorina molluscs causing total parasitic castration. A histological study of penial glands in Littorina saxatilis and L. obtusata males infested with trematodes M. piriformes has been made. Copulatory organs of noninfested molluscs, molluscs after recent contamination (with not completely formed daughter sporocysts), and molluscs containing mature metacercariae inside daughter sporocysts were examined. Based on the data obtained, probable dynamics of the histological structure of infested glandular apparatus was established. It was shown, that the trematode infestation have an influence on the muscular and secretory parts of penial glands. The wall of the penial gland muscular capsule becomes more fine in infested L. saxatilis. On the contrary, this wall is vastly thicker in infested L. obtusata, as compared with noninfested individuals. Glandular cells of the molluscs' penial glands decreases the amount of granular secret in both species. In L. obtusata the number of secretory cells is shown to be reduced up to their total disappearance. The above pathological changes probably prevent normal function of penial glands.  相似文献

Summary The functional morphology of the mammiliform penial glands ofLittorina saxatilis has been investigated with both light and electron microscopy. These penial glands line the ventral edge of the penis and orient with the female mantle during copulation. Secretions are released from the penial glands to this interface where they probably function in adhesion. The penial gland secretions comprise heterogeneous granules as well as apocrine and mucous secretions. The heterogeneous granules are produced in separate multicellular glands arranged in a series of lobes that lie outside a thick smooth muscle layer enclosing the lumen. Each glandular lobe is surrounded by a thin layer of smooth muscle. Secretions are transported in individual cellular processes that pass through the thick smooth muscle layer and empty into the lumen. Surrounding the lumen is an epithelium containing apocrine secretory cells as well as occasional goblet-type, mucous cells. The combined action of the muscles forces secretions out of the lumen through the penial papilla, onto the external surface of the mammiliform penial gland. Longitudinal muscles extend into the penial papilla enabling its protrusion or retraction. Retraction of the penial papilla following secretion release is thought to create negative pressure beneath the penial gland producing suction adhesion. The visco-elastic properties of the penial gland secretion are qualitatively different from foot mucus and may represent specialization to an adhesive function.  相似文献

In this paper, adaptations and microanatomic changes in the branchial chamber, as well as influence of parasitosis on the reproductive function of shrimp, are analyzed. Probopyrus cf. oviformis was observed in the branchial chamber of shrimps of both sexes, with an infestation rate of 29%. The infestation frequency in relation to sex and size was not uniform, and two trends were observed: a higher frequency in bigger males in contrast to females, with less infestation frequency in older individuals. This aspect was related to changes in the sex ratio of shrimps, infested and noninfested, with the following conclusions: (1) Sexual inversions were not observed in females of P. argentinus; (2) male infestation with P. cf. oviformis showed tertiary sexual rate bias. It occurred because the metabolic parasite-host relationship led to an increase in size. These infested males were incorporated into a normal population characterized by females being bigger than males. The morphological and functional changes observed were (1) branchial chamber reduction, slendering of the cephalothorax lateral wall, together with local injury (oxygen consumption was below the normal values; and (2) the ovaries of infested females of P. argentinus remained stationary in incipient maturity (secondary vitellogenesis was not observed).  相似文献

Competition for fertilisation in hermaphroditic animals seems to have led to many odd behaviours and complex morphologies involved in the transfer of accessory-gland products to the partner. Terrestrial slugs of the genus Deroceras show remarkably elaborate and interspecifically diverse penis morphologies and mating behaviours. Most species have an appending penial gland, which in Deroceras panormitanum consists of a few long fingers that are everted after sperm exchange and laid onto the partner’s back. To investigate whether this gland transfers a secretion onto the partner’s skin, we killed slugs at different mating stages and studied their penial glands and skin histologically. Two types of secretion granules appeared at a very early stage of courtship, and the penial gland was already filled 15 min into the courtship. At copulation, the gland everted this secretion onto the partner’s body, where it remained for at least 50 min. No lysis of skin tissue or other effects on the skin were observed. The slugs tried to lick the received secretion off their own body, and some droplets were observed to be shed with the body mucus. Our results indicate the external application of a glandular substance that could function as either a pheromone or allohormone. The behaviours of the recipients suggest sexual conflict, although mutual interest cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Age at first reproduction is an extremely important life-historytrait. Several factors such as nutritional state and age-specificfecundity have been shown to influence time to sexual maturity;however, little work has been done in insects. We addressedthis in a stalk-eyed fly (Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni), by testingthe hypothesis that time to sexual maturity is associated withthe development of male internal reproductive structures. Wefound that sexual maturity was attained after an increased rateof growth in the accessory glands, several days after maturesperm bundles, and motile sperm were observed in the testes.Although testis development is essential, the results suggestthat accessory gland growth is more closely associated withthe time taken to reach sexual maturity than is testis growth. When we manipulated the growth of testes and accessory glandsvia a dietary manipulation, we found that delayed growth ratesincreased the time taken to reach sexual maturity. Among thedelayed individuals, sexually mature males had larger accessoryglands, but not testes, than did immature males. In adult males, mating frequency was significantly positively correlated withaccessory gland size, but not with testis length or body size.We conclude that accessory gland size is a critical determinantof sexual maturity and male mating frequency in this species.  相似文献

This study was aimed to investigate the functional morphology of copulation and sperm transfer in the invasive snail Pomacea canaliculata. Three-dimensional renderings of the male copulatory apparatus were made and showed elaborate systems for innervation and for hemolymph supply and drainage. A key component of the male copulatory apparatus is the penial sheath, which shows three specialized glands; the medial and distal glands may participate in adherence to the mantle cavity wall of the female during copulation. The outer gland has an epithelium composed of columnar cells with branched microvilli, mucous goblet cells and large granular secretory cells containing intragranular crystalloids, which produce an exocrine secretion during copulation. The interaction of male/female copulatory organs was studied in dissections of snap-frozen pairs. Sperm are left in the sperm pit, at the end of the pallial spermiduct. Afterwards, the muscular action of the penial bulb takes the sperm up to the vermiform penis, which slides from the penial pouch into the central groove of the penial sheath, and it later emerges through a T-shaped sulcus of this structure and enters the female vagina. Then, it climbs through the capsule duct, and its tip reaches the proximity of the seminal receptacle. A model of copulation and sperm transfer is presented on the basis of the new findings and on published literature.  相似文献

Generation glands are holocrine epidermal glands occurring on the ventral aspect of the thigh of cordylid lizards. In most species these glands seemingly start to differentiate with the onset of sexual maturity, but macroscopic signs of generation gland activity were noted in neonates of the large-scaled girdled lizard, Cordylus macropholis. The glands of neonatal, subadult, and adult individuals were examined microscopically using standard histological techniques. The glands of the five neonatal specimens examined, including both males and females, all had the same basic structure and displayed two layers of mature glandular material. In subadult and adult specimens, the number of layers varied from seven to nine. The structure of the generation glands of C. macropholis is similar to that of the few other Cordylus species that have been described to date. They are of the protruding kind with multiple mature glandular generations. Juveniles of an additional 12 cordylid species have been examined for the presence of active generation glands. Active glands were found to be present in neonates of C. tasmani and C. tropidosternum, both of which are, like C. macropholis, terrestrial species. In C. cordylus and C. coeruleopunctatus, active generation glands are absent in neonates, but differentiate soon after birth. In other cordylid species, generation glands apparently differentiate only with the onset of sexual maturity. J. Morphol. 235:177–182, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to clarify the importance of humoral antibody in host resistance to ticks, in the present work we studied the immunological response of rabbits infested with larvae, nymphs or adults of Rhipicephalus sanguineus , using extracts of eggs (EE), larvae (LE), nymphs (NE), male salivary glands (MSGE), male midguts (MME), female salivary glands (FSGE) and female midguts (FME). When serum from rabbits infested with larvae or nymphs was tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, no reactions were observed with any of the extracts including the homologous LE or NE. In sera from rabbits infested with adult ticks, the reactions were observed in both homologous (MSGE, MME, FSGE and FME) and heterologous (EE, LE and NE) system. However, differences were seen regarding the type of antigen used. When the experiment was carried out using extracts from adults higher responses were found. With FSGE and FME antigens, antibody levels were systematically higher than those observed when MSGE and MME were used.  相似文献

Summary Growth from hatching to the onset of lay (sexual maturity) was studied in White Plymouth Rock pullets from lines selected for high (HN) and low (LN) 56-day body weight, their reciprocal F1 crosses, an F2 cross, and two dwarf populations originating from the HN and LN parental lines. The highest R2s for describing growth for all populations except HN were obtained when body weight was expressed relative to body weight at sexual maturity. Modes of inheritance differed depending on whether patterns of growth were expressed in a chronological time frame or on a physiological basis. Heterosis observed for age at sexual maturity and for body weight after the age when selection was made was not in evidence when ages and weights were expressed as a proportion of those at sexual maturity. This research was supported, in part, by BARD Project No. US-675-83C  相似文献

Morpho-dynamic aspects of the frog (Rana esculenta) heart were correlated to seasonal and sexual traits. The statistical analysis of the data (696 frog specimens: 448 males and 248 females), collected during 8 years of routine research on frog cardiac physiology, indicated that cardiac biology is characterised by sexual dimorphism. The relative cardiac weight of males was higher than that of females of similar size. With respect to the males of similar size, female frogs revealed an increased relative ventricular weight and ventricular contractile capacity. The morphometric analysis showed that the ventricular growth was achieved through significant myocardial enlargement accompanied by a reduction of the lacunary spaces. This is more pronounced in females during the breeding period. The correlation between sexual maturity and ventricular morpho-functional changes revealed that in male frogs sexual maturity correlates with a remarkable increment of the ventricular weight associated with higher values of pulse pressure. This data indicate that sex and season-related factors influence cardiac morpho-dynamics in R. esculenta.  相似文献

In this study, semi-thin sections stained with histochemical techniques and transmission electron microscopy were used to obtain new data about the morphology and function of the male copulatory apparatus of the cephalaspidean gastropod Bulla striata. The apparatus comprises a vestibule, a penial papilla and a prostate consisting of a coiled unbranched tube ending in a blind caecum. The penial papilla and the coiled tubular prostate are enclosed by a muscular sheath, which is continuous with the muscular tissue of the vestibule. The epithelium lining the lumen of the vestibule is formed by ciliated and mucus-secreting cells. Two new types of subepithelial secretory cells were discovered in this region. The penial papilla is a muscular structure without secretory cells in the epithelium lining the narrow lumen. The tubule that constitutes the prostate possesses a muscular wall and can be divided in three distinct regions: a non-secretory duct connected to the penial papilla, a glandular region rich in large secretory cells and the terminal caecum containing just a few small secretory cells. In the terminal blind caecum, the muscular sheath is fused with the muscular wall of the tubular prostate. Large numbers of spermatozoa were found in the glandular region and in the terminal caecum of the prostate. A new functional mechanism is proposed to explain penial eversion during copulation. This differs from a previous hypothesis in two main aspects: (1) existence of a permanent penial papilla in mature animals acting as a functional penis and (2) functional role of vestibule during copulation, which everts and surrounds the penial papilla, while the latter protrudes outwards.  相似文献

Clasper gland morphology and development in Potamotrygon magdalenae and its relation with the acquisition of reproductive maturity is described in males of different developmental stages (embryos, neonates, juveniles, and reproductively active and resting adults). The glands are subcutaneous masses in the proximal base of each clasper. They are partially bilobate organs with a ventral groove that bears a row of papillae. Glands tend to be asymmetric, the left gland has a larger size, a trend that has been observed in other organs of elasmobranchs. Glands are formed by radially organized tubular secretory units lined with a simple columnar epithelium with basal nuclei and granular eosinophilic cytoplasm; vascularized loose connective tissue surrounds the gland units. The gland is covered by two layers of striated muscle tissue in circular and longitudinal arrangement. The clasper glands begin to develop in neonates and their secretory activity begins in juveniles. The active secretion of the clasper gland is observed in mature males, it includes glycoproteins and sulfated mucopolysaccharides. The size of the glands has a positive and direct relationship with body size, measured as disc width. Significant differences in clasper gland size were found between mature (active and resting) and immature (neonates and juveniles) males, suggesting that the acquisition of the sexual maturity involves the increase in the size of the gland due to a highly augmented secretory activity. Therefore, clasper glands are clearly associated with the reproductive activity of males and their secretion should have an endocrine control as other sexual secondary organs. J. In the highly organized and complex process of mammalian spermatogenesis, the development of an undifferentiated diploid germ cell into a fully differentiated and mature spermatozoon is orchestrated in a time frame unique for each species including man. If the various hormonal signals including environmental cues that play a critical part in initiating these events are not properly executed, various deficiencies including delay in sexual maturity or puberty are likely. In this study we have followed testicular development and spermatogenesis in the FSH receptor knockout (FORKO) mice from Day 7 onward by using histology and quantitative DNA flow cytometry. The drastic reduction in testicular weight and shrinkage of seminiferous tubules that occurred at this early age persisted into the adult stage in the FORKOs, suggesting inhibition of the initial developmental processes. The round spermatids that were clearly abundant on Day 21 in the wild-type and heterozygous males were few and present only in some tubules of the FORKOs. There were no elongated spermatids in FORKO males on Day 35. The sperm produced by Day 49 FORKOs were already aberrant, a feature that persisted into adulthood in these animals. As all these changes occurred in a background of normal circulating testosterone levels, we may conclude that the delay in testicular development is a consequence of the loss of FSH-receptor signaling. The delay in sexual maturity of FORKOs was accompanied by reduction in fertility as evidenced by mating studies. Based on these data we suggest that the FORKO mouse might be a useful experimental model to define the molecular mechanisms that underlie the delay in puberty.  相似文献

The present study deals with the morphology of the rat parotid gland and its changes after Trypanosoma cruzi infection. The glands of control and infected animals were analyzed by histologic and histoquantitative methods. After 18 days of infection with T. cruzi, a significant reduction of the density of the volume of the acini and duct system, as well as a significant increase in the amount of connective tissue was noted. In addition, these animals displayed an increase in the number of cells undergoing mitosis. In the 45 day infected rats, there was return to the normal pattern. It is suggested that in the infected animals the decrease in body weight could be responsible for retarded sexual maturity, leading to the lower level of testosterone. It can be assumed that decreased levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and neural growth factor (NGF) caused by the lack of testosterone in infected animals also contribute to the atrophy of the parotid gland and to the proliferation of the connective tissue.  相似文献

Mammogenesis of rabbits was studied in dynamics, including periods of sexual maturity (3-6 months old), pregnancy, lactation and involution. A characteristic of histological structure of mammary gland of rabbits in different physiological periods was done. Variation in maintenance of glandular tissue of mammary gland during mammogenesis was analyzed. It has been shown that the share of parenchyma tissue is increased with the pregnancy onset and achieves its maximum value by the 25-30 th days of pregnancy. The increase in densities of mammocyte nucleus in this period and also in the period preceding the sexual maturity was observed that is associated with the active proliferation of cells. It is shown that an in vitro cell culture, derived during the period preceding the sexual maturity, has a great grown potential, whereas a culture devired in the course of lactogenesis is characterized by the presence of highly specific lactocytes and has a low proliferative activity.  相似文献

The development of gerbil uterine glands has been described. Gland formation starts about day 6 postnatally (p.n.). At day 10 p.n. the glandular lumen contains already some fluid, and the glandular cells are in an activated state. The apical shape of the glandular cells depends mainly on the width of the lumen. Secretory vesicles in early developmental stages are electron-lucent. As sexual maturity is reached, secretory granules become electron-dense. This change in secretory granular structure indicates a change in the quality of uterine gland fluid.  相似文献

Soldatenko, E.V., Shatrov A.B. and Shumeev, A.N. (2010). Stylet formation in Anisus vortex (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gastropoda: Planorbidae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 377–382. The detailed stylet morphology and stylet formation during postembryonic development in the pulmonate mollusk Anisus vortex (Linnaeus, 1758) are described using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and histological methods. The stylet begins to develop in the lumen of the copulatory apparatus and then assumes its final position inside the penial sac. The developing stylet lying between two epithelial layers is undergoing chitinization mediated by secretion of the secretory epithelium of the penial sac that completes on the 80–120th day after hatching of mollusks from the egg masses. The stability of the characters of stylet morphology and their significance for the systematics of Planorbidae are discussed.  相似文献

Some morphometric relationships were studied in the hermit crab Paguristes erythrops to describe its relative growth and the size at which sexual maturity is reached, as well as the shell influence on this process. Individuals were collected monthly from January to December/1999, by SCUBA diving and 12 different characters were measured on males and females. Sexual size dimorphism was observed in length and width of left cheliped. Size at sexual maturity was estimated between 2.8 and 3.5 mm shield length based on the left cheliped relations of the males and on the endopod and exopod of the second pleopod of the females. Differences in the allometry of individuals occupying different shell species were observed. The present work demonstrated the importance of characterizing the type of growth of some parts (pleopods) not yet used in other studies on relative growth of hermit crabs that may correspond to indicators of the size at sexual maturity.  相似文献

The accessory reproductive glands of the male desert locust were studied with the electron microscope from the time of adult emergence until full sexual maturity was attained (10 days). Observations on the changes in the nucleus and the cytoplasm of the glandular epithelium, particularly those organelles involved in the elaboration of cell secretions, were made during the maturation of the accessory glands. Cells of gland 16 (the functional seminal vesicle) exhibit numerous ribosomal aggregates, have a concentration of mitochondria along their luminal surface, and show some secretory activity, even at the time of adult emergence. On the other hand, all other accessory glands show very little development of the secretory apparatus (rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, polyribosomes, Golgi elements, elaborate mitochondria, etc.) until after the fifth adult day. These changes parallel changes in the secretory activity of the adult corpus allatum; and it is suggested that the corpus allatum hormone regulates the maturation of the truly glandular accessory glands of the locust, but not that of the functional vesicle.  相似文献
