Nocturnal and siesta resting ecology and behaviour of 24 Egyptian mongooses were studied. Mongooses mainly used underground dens (rabbit warrens and badger setts) and thickets in both periods. Tree hollows were occasionally used. Twenty-one individuals used 338 different nocturnal resting sites on 672 occasions. Mean number of resting sites per individual was 16.1, though resting sites used by each individual increased when sample size did. Mean re-use rate was 1.99 nights/site. The majority of nocturnal resting sites were only used once, and very few more than five times. Nocturnal resting sites used two or more times were significantly more often inside than outside home range core areas, whereas resting sites used once were significantly more often outside than inside. Mean distance between consecutive nocturnal resting sites was different among classes of individuals, and annual variations were detected. Eighteen mongooses used 133 different resting sites on 171 occasions during siesta periods. Mean number of different sites used and re-use rate were 7.4 and 1.29, respectively. Types of resting sites used during siesta periods changed throughout the year with underground dens predominating in summer. Re-use rates remained constant for the whole year. The impacts of social structure and summer high temperatures on mongoose resting behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

In the dive tourism industry, shark provisioning has become increasingly popular in many places around the world. It is therefore important to determine the impacts that provisioning may have on shark behaviour. In this study, eight adult whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus were tagged with time-depth recorders at Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, Australia. Tags collected time and depth data every 30?s. The absolute change in depth over 5-min blocks was considered as a proxy for vertical activity level. Daily variations in vertical activity levels were analysed to determine the effects of time of day on whitetip reef shark behaviour. This was done for days when dive boats were absent from the area, and for days when dive boats were present, conducting shark provisioning. Vertical activity levels varied between day and night, and with the presence of boats. In natural conditions (no boats present), sharks remained at more constant depths during the day, while at night animals continuously moved up and down the water column, showing that whitetip reef sharks are nocturnally active. When boats were present, however, there were also long periods of vertical activity during the day. If resting periods during the day are important for energy budgets, then shark provisioning may affect their health. So, if this behaviour alteration occurs frequently, e.g., daily, this has the potential to have significant negative effects on the animals?? metabolic rates, net energy gain and overall health, reproduction and fitness.  相似文献

We recorded 30 24-h monitoring periods with 10-min sampling intervals on seven (three female; four male) Global-Positioning-System-collared adult free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus), from June 1999 to December 2000, in the Parc National des Cévennes, France. We observed the duration of resting bouts (n = 385) and then microhabitat variables (aspect, slope, presence of edge and litter, visibility, abundance of vegetation consumed or not) at 178 resting places. Resting bouts were shorter during the night than during the day from June to October but did not vary between sexes. Resting place visibility was lower during the day, especially in August. Daytime resting places generally offered more litter. Females used steeper slopes than males. We found higher variability in visibility and slope during the night. Aspect used did not vary from month to month or between day and night. Observed differences between day and night resting place characteristics suggest that red deer were probably facing a tradeoff between feeding and cover. Use of cover prevailed during the daytime whereas night resting place characteristics were more variable, indicating less constrained behaviour. Thus, cover (as a protection from disturbance), as well as food, is an important factor in red deer habitat use (at least during the day in disturbed areas) and should not be neglected in forest carrying capacity management.  相似文献

This experiment deals with the effects of two different light-dark regimes on general activity, behavioural patterns and sleep in domestic hens (Gallus domesticus). The light-dark schemes were composed of a traditional 14 h light-10h dark period and the Biomittent Lighting Program (BMLP), which consists of only 15 min light during every hour of the traditional 14 h photoperiod. Although it was found that hens are more active during the day than during the night, they were much less active under the BMLP-regime compared to the traditional regime. More specifically, there is considerable lowering of their activities during the dark portions of the day; behavioural observations revealed that they spend these periods not with resting behaviour, but with passive wakefulness. They more or less concentrate their daily activities during the 15-min light periods. Under the night period of the BMLP-regime, hens appeared to be more restless. Sleep recordings showed that sleep tended to decrease in favour of more drowsiness.

It was concluded that circadian rhythmicity of the hens is maintained under both lighting schemes, although the BMLP-regime imposes more passive wakefulness during the day and slightly more activity during the night.  相似文献

Field observations on the behaviour of adult Galapagos giant tortoises ( Geochehne elephantopus ) on the islands of Santa Cruz (Indefatigable) and Pinzon (Duncan) were made by the 1972 Expedition, and on Santa Cruz by the 1973 Expedition. The animals (in all 14 on Santa Cruz and three on Pinzon) were observed continuously throughout the day for periods of 3–14 days so that their main non-reproductive activities (feeding and walking) could be quantitatively recorded. The period of potential activity was between about 08.00 hrs and 16.00–18.00 hrs, but the pattern of behaviour was extremely variable, both in a given individual and between one individual and another; it seemed little influenced by the relatively slight fluctuations of temperature and climate which occurred during the period of study (July-September) on Santa Cruz. The tortoises on Pinzon, a much more arid island, were less active, and one showed a strongly bimodal activity pattern with a resting period during the middle of the day. The animals studied in 1972 showed a strong disposition to return after several days to the same sleeping place, but this homing tendency was not observed in 1973. This discrepancy can perhaps be attributed to the fact that the two expeditions worked in different areas under different weather conditions. Observations on the plants eaten, on the association between tortoises and certain birds, and on some other aspects of tortoise behaviour such as walking speed and responses to sounds are also described.  相似文献

This is the third of a series of three papers which report on maintenance behaviour of individual Shorthorn cows observed over 24-hour periods at fortnightly intervals for two years in central Australia. In this part, sequences of activities are analysed using Markov chain methods, and this is followed by an integrated discussion of the results of all three papers in the series. Temporal grazing patterns, distance travelled, elimination and watering frequencies, and distribution of the cattle in the available plant communities at daybreak were examined in Part I. The continuously-recorded data on grazing, walking, ruminating, resting, and drinking were analyzed in Part II using multivariate and univariate statistical techniques to relate duration and incidence of activities to several environmental factors. The sequences of activities of cows exhibit five basic patterns: summer day and night, autumn night, winter/spring night and autumn/winter/spring day. Kinetograms, diagrams showing activity sequences, were used to give a graphical representation of the dynamic way in which the activities are structured under each of these conditions. A major feature was that during the day, standing resting is a “pivotal” activity and many of the other activity changes pass through this; in particular an occurrence of standing resting of considerable duration tends to separate active behaviours (grazing, walking) from passive behaviours (especially those involving lying). At night, in contrast, bouts of grazing perform this pivotal role. The seasons differed largely in the way activities following grazing were performed, with cattle in summer being more likely to go directly from grazing to ruminating rather than from grazing to standing to ruminating as they do in other seasons. The overall discussion brings out the way in which the animal structures many different aspects of its behaviour in coping successfully with the periodically stressful environment of central Australia. All analyses showed that there was some adjustment of activity as seasons changed, but that no single environmental factor had a major influence. Behavioural patterns differed from day to night, but moonlight nights were not used differently from those without moonlight. Somewhat surprisingly, little influence of forage condition on behaviour was found. In particular, it appeared that, within the range of conditions observed in the study, the cows did not need to adjust the length and number of bouts of grazing to cope with varying forage quantity and quality, although they did seem to have to graze more widely as forage became scarcer. The main behavioural adjustment seemed to be an increase in frequency and length of bouts of ruminating in summer. Comparison with other studies suggests that cattle behaviour is particularly robust under a wide variety of conditions.Several management recommendations follow from the discussion; in particular the use of smaller paddocks and possibly of breeds which have less energy loss due to rumination in summer are suggested.  相似文献

Radio-collared coyotes (Canis latrans) were relocated every 15 min during continuous 24-h sampling periods. The data were used to estimate patterns of home-range use by coyotes. Utilization of the the home range was found to vary spatially and behaviourally. Spatial use was determined by relative amounts of time coyotes spent and amounts of distance they travelled within each are of their home ranges. Behavioural use was based on identification of three types of movement patterns that werew postulated to represent three general kinds of behaviour: (1) resting behaviour, (2) hunting or investigative behavour, and (3) ranging or traveling behaviour. Spatial and behavioural uses of the home range area were found to be interrelated; core areas in which animals spent most of their time were also used primarily for resting or hunting. In areas in which animals spent little time, coyotes exhibited primarily ranging behaviour. Use patterns were postulated to be the result of coyotes' selection of areas due to unique vegetal, faunal, or physiogfaphic characteristics. Temporal variatrions in home-range use were found and were postulated to result from seasonal and diel changes in coyote behaviour due to the annual reproductive cycle, the seasonal and diel cycle of temperature, possible cycles in prey behaviour.  相似文献

The population dynamics and behaviour of the larid assemblage of a Mediterranean coastal wetland, the Vourkari inlet in Greece, were studied during the winter of 2008–2009. More black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) were seen in the inlet in December, more Mediterranean gulls (Larus melanocephalus) were present from mid-January to mid-February, while little variation was observed in yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) numbers throughout winter. Bird numbers remained stable through the day for the yellow-legged gull, but fewer black-headed and Mediterranean gulls were present in the late morning than the other periods. Diurnal activity patterns showed that feeding was the primary behaviour for yellow-legged gulls and resting and sleeping for black-headed and Mediterranean gulls, with locomotion being equally important for all species. All larids were primarily feeding in the late morning period, but yellow-legged gulls were doing so in much higher proportions. These contrasting patterns suggested that the Vourkari inlet was more important as a day roost for black-headed and Mediterranean gulls and a preferred feeding ground for yellow-legged gulls. Furthermore, results suggested that resting and sleeping were interchangeable activities and all other activities had more or less the same time demands on a daily basis, and also a consistent pattern across species in sleeping proportions that might indicate cross-species synchrony in sleep patterns; however future research is needed to resolve these issues. This study provided important new information on the winter ecology of three larids and revealed patterns of wetland use by these species that could help assess the importance of certain areas and improve coastal habitat management strategies to benefit birds.  相似文献

The daily routine of a population of wild Barbary macaques is described. The day journey is mainly on the ground with the animals taking to the trees only for sleeping, resting, avoiding predators and, during some seasons, for feeding. Two methods (based on individual activity records and on social interactions) were used to measure the diurnal distribution of behaviour. In the summer, feeding was bimodally distributed with peaks morning and afternoon. The initiation of social interactions peaked at the same time, owing to the frequent use of agonistic behaviour to maintain individual distance while feeding. The reduction in feeding at midday was accompanied by an increase in allogrooming and resting and in the proportion of animals in the trees. Peaks of friendly approaches and in the initiation of interactions involving unweaned monkeys (excluding play, maternal behaviour and agonistic behaviour) occurred on either side of the midday rest period and in the evening. In the winter, there was no midday rest period; grooming decreased throughout the day while feeding increased. Sexual behaviour was rare during the summer.  相似文献

Rhopaloceran butterflies are well known to visit distinct species of flowers in order to extract nectar, normally leaving again after a short time to continue their foraging flights. Females of Agapetes galathea, however, often show a different behaviour, which is the subject of the following analysis. The dynamics of sugar production by flowers and the foraging pattern of the galathea- ♂♂ have been studied under natural conditions. Special consideration is given to the aggressive behaviour of the females towards approaching insects during their flower resting periods.  相似文献

We examined the resting behaviour during pairing and egg-laying of bred female Biston betularia (L.) after they were set free at wooded sites in Somerset and Cardiff. Moths were not released immediately on emergence but were held for three nights to overcome an initial period of flight activity. Females (N= 257) were placed on trunks, and on large and small branches of trees, especially oaks, over periods of several weeks in 1984, 1985 and 1986. Releases were not made within 50 m of any known survivor. One hundred and thirty-one pairings were observed. We also examined oviposition behaviour in a cage experiment using different types of branches. Our observations support Mikkola's earlier conclusion from cage experiments with male moths that the species rests predominantly on branches and shows an appropriately specialized resting attitude, demonstrated here in a series of photographs. Many moths will rest underneath, or on the side of, narrow branches in the canopy. Once released females had settled and paired they only moved quite short distances, but positioning and egg-laying were profoundly influenced by the presence of foliose lichens. Females of all phenotypes show a strong preference to oviposit beneath a thallus of foliose lichens. Their tendency to rest against or close to the lichen during the day could markedly influence their crypsis. In the absence of foliose lichens, eggs are laid in cracks in the bark. The survivorship of released females both in different pairing combinations and during their whole reproductive life-span is analysed. These preliminary data suggest that bird predation can give rise to differential mortality of different pairing combinations and of the phenotypes. This technique provides a powerful method of measuring the relative crypsis and differential mortality of phenotypes with living females in natural resting sites. The significance of our observations on resting behaviour is discussed with regard to the role of air pollution and epiphytes in industrial melanism. Particular attention is given to the causal mechanisms underlying recent declines in the frequency of carbonaria melanics in parts of Britain. One important factor is the new growth made by trees since the marked reduction in particulate air pollution in the 1960s. It is emphasized that we need to know much more about the interactions between pollution, epiphytes and resting backgrounds, especially in the canopy, before we can be confident of our understanding of the evolution of industrial melanism.  相似文献

While group housing (GH) is mandatory in the European Union for the greater part of pregnancy, single housing in farrowing crates (FCs) during lactation that restrict sows in most of their natural behaviour patterns is still practised on a large scale. Research is urgently needed to develop alternative farrowing systems that improve sows’ welfare. Therefore, sows in three different farrowing systems – pens with FC, loose housing (LH) pens and GH for six sows – were compared regarding the level of skin injuries and their active and resting behaviour. A skin injury score was assessed for 15 body parts of 102 sows in six batches on 3 days (days 1, 14 and 34). In total, the active and resting behaviour of 77 sows in six batches was examined on 3 days (days 18, 25 and 32) between 0700 h and 1900 h by means of a scan sampling method. The suckling behaviour and the level of cross-suckling were analysed in GH by means of direct observation in four batches during three 4-h sampling periods (days 17, 24 and 31). No significant differences were found in total skin injuries when the sows entered the systems (day 1), but GH sows showed significantly higher total skin injuries compared to FC and LH sows in the middle (day 14) and at the end (day 34) of the lactation period. A significant difference between FC and LH sows was never seen. Differences were found for the proportion of different body postures between the three systems. The odds for lying in lateral recumbency versus standing and sitting versus standing were significantly higher for FC and LH sows compared to GH sows. Additionally, sows were significantly more likely to be standing as opposed to lying in lateral recumbency as the lactation period progressed. Cross-suckling was a frequent behaviour in GH, seen in 35.0% of all successful suckling bouts. However, only an average of 0.56 piglets per successful suckling bout was observed cross-suckling, suggesting only a few piglets were engaged in cross-suckling. In conclusion, the skin injury score was only moderately increased in GH compared to FC and LH and comparable to pregnant group-housed sows, both free farrowing systems seemed to be an environmental enrichment for lactating sows and good management cannot prevent the occurrence of cross-suckling in a GH system, but can probably reduce it.  相似文献

Environmental factors have strong influence on activity of alpine ungulates. However, the presence and activities of people in high mountains have been growing rapidly and have led to the advent of human-induced factors, which may modify the time budget. In this study, we examined the influence of natural and human-induced factors on the daytime budget of Tatra chamois Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica. On average, chamois spent 46% of their time foraging, 40% resting, 13% moving around and 1% on social behaviour. The amount of time devoted to particular categories of behaviour was influenced by the time of day, herd size, weather conditions and human disturbance. Human disturbance and the time of day had the highest effect on the proportion of foraging in the daytime budget, which increased as the day progressed and at greater distances from the nearest hiking trail. These two factors also increased the amount of time spent resting, which peaked during the afternoon hours and at greater distances from the nearest trail. The time spent moving around decreased with increasing herd size, distance from the nearest trail and as the day progressed. Males devoted less time to foraging and more to resting and moving around than females. The intensity of human-induced factors is particularly important for a population inhabiting a small, isolated area, as is the case with strictly high-mountain species.  相似文献

To investigate the functional significance of the behaviour of large mammals in hot, arid conditions, field observations were made of the behaviour of red kangaroos. The behaviour of individual animals was recorded in detail during hot summer days and measurements of the prevailing temperature and radiation environment were made. Changes in the postures adopted by animals during the day are described in relation to environmental conditions; and the occurrence of certain postures and behaviours at periods of greatest heat stress is reported.  相似文献

1. Activity patterns of Aphytis lingnanensis Compere (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) females were determined. Females have a preovipositional period of 2–6.5 h and oviposit daily until they die. The average lifetime fecundity was 191 eggs (n = 10 females), with a maximum of 13 eggs per day, but usually far fewer. Females do not lay eggs at night as low light levels reduce the propensity to oviposit. 2. Aphytis lingnanensis females showed a repeatable pattern of activity during the course of the day, ovipositing actively during the first 1.5 h of their 7 h exposure to hosts. Thereafter, activity levels decreased sharply and females spent relatively long intervals resting. Activity occurred in fairly discrete bouts, with long periods of inactivity, ranging from 12 to 231 min between bouts. 3. Each day, females laid most eggs during their first bout of oviposition, with availability of mature eggs in the ovaries dictating the duration and intensity of ovipositional bouts. Once females completed a bout of oviposition in the laboratory, they moved away from the hosts even though many suitable hosts remained. They stood immobile, sheltering, until they matured more eggs. 4. These results suggest how general biological control models and dynamic state variable models of behaviour can be made more realistic. In particular, the behaviour of females does not remain constant over extended periods, particularly because of egg depletion, which suggests that the interaction between the ovipositional history of the individual and its physiological capabilities dictates the response of females to particular circumstances, and thus contributes to patterns of parasitism in the field. 5. It is predicted that A. lingnanensis females in the field are inactive at night and begin ovipositing when it becomes light enough in the morning. Egg depletion is likely if enough hosts are available, but should occur later in the day than was recorded in the laboratory. Egg-depleted females are likely to shelter while they mature more eggs, but may undertake interpatch movement.  相似文献

Abstract. Larval holometabolous insects show changes in behaviour (e.g. start of wandering and spinning) in specific periods of the moulting cycle in relation to definite ratios of juvenile hormone and moulting hormone (ecdysone). In hemimetabolous insects no such changes in behaviour are known. It should be investigated whether the cockroach Periplaneta americana shows changes in locomotor activity and in food and water consumption in relation to periods of ecdysone production during the last larval stage. Within a mean duration of the last larval stage of 30 days there were two periods of reduced locomotor activity: on day 9 and between days 13 and 17. From days 12–13 food consumption decreased by c . 40% up to the day 18. Water consumption decreased between days 9 and 18 by about 55%. Peaks of ecdysone production appeared after these changes of behaviour in each case. Therefore in larval Periplaneta ecdysone seems not to trigger these behavioural changes.  相似文献

One of the fundamental questions in animal ecology concerns the activity pattern of animals and the environmental and intrinsic factors that influence such dynamics. This study tested the hypotheses that activity time budgets of the African buffalo appeared to vary by season and times of day and predicted that buffalo would express unequal proportion of time for different activity patterns during the wet and dry seasons in Chebera Churchura National Park (CCNP). An investigation on the diurnal activity budget of the African buffalo was carried out during the wet and dry seasons of 2012–2014 in the Chebera Churchura National Park, Ethiopia, using focal‐animal sampling method. Buffalo spent a greater proportion of the time in feeding and resting/ruminating activities in both the wet and dry seasons. Feeding and resting (lying down and standing) were the predominant activities (87.14% of the diurnal active period), 48.95% time spent feeding during the dry season and 44.91% during the wet season. There was a significant decrease in feeding and an increase in resting from dry seasons to wet seasons. Daytime grazing and resting periods during the wet season were estimated to be 5.39 h and 4.98 h, respectively. Morning and the late afternoon activity peaks were more pronounced during the dry season than the wet season. Therefore, feeding and resting time was influenced by the time of day and the seasons. But there were no significant difference in time allocation for other activities in both the wet and dry seasons. The study has implications for understanding animal activity budget across species, particularly relationships between temperature and season.  相似文献

Many animals lower their resting metabolism (metabolic depression) when fasting or consuming inadequate food. We sought to document this response by subjecting five Steller sea lions to periods of: (1) complete fasting; or (2) restricting them to 50% of their normal herring diet. The sea lions lost an average of 1.5% of their initial body mass per day (2.30 kg/d) during the 9-14-day fast, and their resting metabolic rates decreased 31%, which is typical of a "fasting response". However, metabolic depression did not occur during the 28-day food restriction trials, despite the loss of 0.30% of body mass per day (0.42 kg/d). This difference in response suggests that undernutrition caused by reduced food intake may stimulate a "hunger response", which in turn might lead to increased foraging effort. The progressive changes in metabolism we observed during the fasts were related to, but were not directly caused by, changes in body mass from control levels. Combining these results with data collected from experiments when Steller sea lions were losing mass on low energy squid and pollock diets reveals a strong relationship between relative changes in body mass and relative changes in resting metabolism across experimental conditions. While metabolic depression caused by fasting or consuming large amounts of low energy food reduced the direct costs from resting metabolism, it was insufficient to completely overcome the incurred energy deficit.  相似文献

Mouse hepatocytes from healthy control mice and from Ehrlich ascites tumour-bearing mice were used for tracer-kinetic studies of purine catabolism of liver cells during different periods of tumour growth. The dynamics of the radioactive tracers were modelled mathematically by a system of differential equations. Computer simulations, i.e. direct fitting of numerical solutions of these equations to the observed time-courses of metabolites and specific radioactivites, enables one to estimate unknown kinetic parameters of a simplified model of pathways of hepatic purine catabolism in tumour-bearing mice. There occurred great differences of metabolic flux rates between control hepatocytes, hepatocytes of mice during the proliferating period of tumour growth (6th day after inoculation of the tumour) and hepatocytes of mice during the resting period of tumour growth (12th day after inoculation of the tumour). The final purine degradation of hepatocytes prepared during the proliferating period was lower in comparison with that of control hepatocytes, but it was markedly higher in hepatocytes prepared during the resting period of tumour growth. The changes in hepatocyte purine catabolism during the proliferating period of tumour growth argue for transitions which aim at the maintenance of high purine nucleotide levels in the liver itself rather than for an increased nucleoside and nucleobase supply for the tumour. This suggestion is in accordance with the increased ATP level of the liver during the proliferating phase of tumour growth. The drastic acceleration of the final steps of hepatic purine catabolism forming uric acid and allantoin during the resting period of tumour growth was predominantly due to increased flux rate from xanthosine and guanine in accordance with increased catabolism of monophosphorylated nucleotides.  相似文献

We compared the diurnal activity budgets of four syntopic species of African browsing ruminant that differ widely in body size. These were concurrently studied through all phases of the seasonal cycle, in the same area, using the same methods. We tested five predictions from the literature on how body size is expected to influence the behaviour of tropical ungulates: the smallest members of the browsing ruminant guild exhibit (1) the lowest allocation of diurnal time to activity; (2) the greatest hour-to-hour variation in activity and resting time; (3) the greatest reduction in activity time during the hottest days; (4) the least change between wet and the dry seasons in the ratio of feeding: ruminating time; and (5) the greatest time budget allocation to vigilance. Prediction 1 was supported in that the smaller species spent less time being active during the day. Prediction 2 was also supported in that the smaller species were more variable in their relative allocations of time to activity and resting through successive hours of the day. Contrary to Prediction 3, however, the greatest reduction in activity with increasing temperature was found for the largest guild member. The smaller species can achieve their daily food intake requirements by feeding at night and in the cool hours of the day, while the larger species have to feed during all hours of the day and are thus more susceptible to thermoregulatory constraints on foraging. Prediction 4 was partially upheld in that the largest species (giraffe) displayed the widest variation in feeding: ruminating time through the seasonal cycle. Prediction 5 was not supported, indicating that multiple factors interact with body size in determining vigilance behaviour.  相似文献
