Plasmolysis bays, induced in Escherichia coli by hypertonic treatment, are flanked by zones of adhesion between the plasma membrane and the cell wall. To test the proposition of Cook et al. (W. R. Cook, F. Joseleau-Petit, T. J. MacAlister, and L. I. Rothfield, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 84:7144-7148, 1987) that these zones, called periseptal annuli, play a role in determining the division site, we analyzed the positions of these zones by phase-contrast and electron microscopy. In situ treatment of cells grown in agar showed that the youngest cell pole was the most susceptible to plasmolysis, whereas the constriction site was resistant. Lateral bays occurred only at some distance from a polar bay or a resistant constriction site. Orienting cells with their most prominently plasmolyzed polar bay in one direction showed that the lateral bays were always displaced away from the polar bay at about half the distance to the other cell pole. If no poles were plasmolyzed, lateral bays occurred either in the centers of nonconstricting cells or at the 1/4 or 3/4 position of cell length in constricting cells. The asymmetric positions of lateral plasmolysis bays, caused by their abrupt displacement in the presence of polar bays or constriction sites, does not confirm the periseptal annulus model (Cook et al.), which predicts a gradual and symmetric change in the position of lateral bays with increasing cell length. Our analysis indicates that plasmolysis bays have no relation to the development and positioning of the future division site.  相似文献

Background: Intraspecific variations in floral traits of species over its geographic range can be associated with differences in pollinator assemblages and/or with environmental conditions.

Aims: We evaluated the area of elaiophores in different populations of Stigmaphyllon bonariense (n = 9) and S. jatrophifolium (n = 6), and we hypothesised a marked reduction in their size towards their southern limits of distribution, associated with different oil-collecting bee assemblages.

Methods: Area of elaiophores was calculated and we carried out linear correlations with floral size, pollinators, visitation rate and pollinator size along the latitudinal gradient of the plants’ distributions. Moreover, we examined the relative size relationships using allometric analyses, to verify this reduction.

Results: Floral elaiophore area decreased with latitude. However, for S. bonariense we observed an allometric reduction in elaiophore area with respect to floral size, while for S. jatrophifolium an isometric reduction was found. In both species, pollinator richness and visitation rate did not diminish with latitude, but pollinator size for S. bonariense varied.

Conclusions: Our results show a reduction in the size of elaiophores in both species along their distribution range, with dissimilar tendencies, suggesting that these species may have different selection pressures that cause variation of their phenotypic traits.  相似文献

According to current systematics, Festuca inops and F. gracilior are two distinct species. However, they are hardly distinguishable from each other on the basis of their morphological characters. Festuca inops is considered a diploid species endemic to Italy, while F. gracilior has a discontinuous distribution area, apparently related to chromosomal levels: diploid populations in Italy and south-east France, tetraploid populations in north-east Spain. The diploid populations of both taxa from Italy and south-east France are investigated in the present study. Nearly 1000 exsiccata were examined and morphometric analysis was carried out on macro- and micromorphological features of 119 specimens (including type-specimens) and on 20 natural populations (including loci classici ). All these data showed that the two species should be referred to a single taxon, for which the rank of species seems to be appropriate. This result is supported by karyological, ecological and chorological data and was confirmed by the results of ISSR analysis. To evaluate and assess the ontogenetic background for paedomorphosis in phocoenids, samples of 144 harbour porpoises, 81 white‐beaked dolphins, and 130 Commerson's dolphins were compared in terms of the development of epiphyseal fusion, cranial suture fusion, and ontogeny of cranial shape. Harbour porpoises and Commerson's dolphins terminated growth and development of all investigated traits sooner than white‐beaked dolphins, leading to lesser degrees of fusion of skeletal elements and less postnatal allometric development. The latter occurred even though shape in the two paedomorphic species developed at twice the rate relative to the size of white‐beaked dolphins. These observations imply that progenetic evolution has occurred convergently in phocoenid and Cephalorhynchus ancestors. The truncated ontogenies allow sexual maturity to be attained earlier and provide a greater reproductive potential. Both species inhabit similar temperate productive habitats and, hence, ecological factors are proposed to have supplied the selection pressures leading to progenesis. Constant prey availability must be a prerequisite for the observed phenomena because frequent food‐intake is necessitated by the limited capacity for energy storage and high heat‐loss entailed by the resulting small body sizes. Progenesis has rarely been proposed in mammal species. In recent years, the increased sampling of protein-coding genes from diverse eukaryotes has revealed that many aspects of each gene tree are at odds with other phylogenies. This has led to the belief that each gene tree has unique strengths and weaknesses, suggesting that an accurate picture of eukaryotic relationships will be achieved only through comparative phylogeny using several different genes. To this end, actin genes were characterized from two genera of chlorarachniophytes, Chlorarachnion and Lotharella, and three species of the cercomonad flagellate Cercomonas: Phylogenetic trees including these new actin genes confirm the recently proposed relationship between chlorarachniophytes and cercomonads (Cercozoa) and, more importantly, also show a close relationship between Cercozoa and Foraminifera. Both of these are major eukaryotic groups encompassing extremely diverse organisms, yet there is no strong evidence for the evolutionary position of either from morphological or molecular data. The union of Cercozoa and Foraminifera suggested by actin phylogeny represents a novel step in the long process of determining the broad relationships between all major eukaryotic groups.  相似文献

Due to ubiquitous eutrophication and fragmentation, many plant species are actually threatened in Europe. Most ecosystems face an overall nutrient input leading to changes in species composition. Fragmentation is effectively influencing species survival. We investigate if two different measures of species performance of 91 calcareous grassland species–rate of decline and rarity—are related to comparable traits and hence processes. On the one hand we expected that species rate of decline is mainly determined by the processes of eutrophication and fragmentation. On the other hand we hypothesized that the importance of site characteristics may overwhelm the effect of eutrophication and fragmentation for species rarity. Hence, we compared persistence traits responding to eutrophication, dispersal traits being related to fragmentation and ecological site factors for decreasing and increasing species and for rare and common species. The results suggest that increasing species had better means of long-distance dispersal and were more competitive than decreasing species. In contrast, there were hardly any differences in traits between rare and common species, but site characteristics were related to species rarity. Rare species were in the main those with ecological preferences for warm, dry, light and nutrient poor conditions. This study may represent a basis for the assessment of plant species threat. Applying the deduced knowledge about the life history of decreasing versus increasing species to habitat-scale approaches it is possible to predict which species may become threatened in the future simply from the combination of their trait values. Brain compartment size allometries may adaptively reflect cognitive needs associated with behavioral development and ecology. Ants provide an informative system to study the relationship of neural architecture and development because worker tasks and sensory inputs may change with age. Additionally, tasks may be divided among morphologically and behaviorally differentiated worker groups (subcastes), reducing repertoire size through specialization and aligning brain structure with task‐specific cognitive requirements. We hypothesized that division of labor may decrease developmental neuroplasticity in workers due to the apparently limited behavioral flexibility associated with task specialization. To test this hypothesis, we compared macroscopic and cellular neuroanatomy in two ant sister clades with striking contrasts in worker morphological differentiation and colony‐level social organization: Oecophylla smaragdina , a socially complex species with large colonies and behaviorally distinct dimorphic workers, and Formica subsericea , a socially basic species with small colonies containing monomorphic workers. We quantified volumes of functionally distinct brain compartments in newly eclosed and mature workers and measured the effects of visual experience on synaptic complex (microglomeruli) organization in the mushroom bodies—regions of higher‐order sensory integration—to determine the extent of experience‐dependent neuroplasticity. We demonstrate that, contrary to our hypothesis, O. smaragdina workers have significant age‐related volume increases and synaptic reorganization in the mushroom bodies, whereas F. subsericea workers have reduced age‐related neuroplasticity. We also found no visual experience‐dependent synaptic reorganization in either species. Our findings thus suggest that changes in the mushroom body with age are associated with division of labor, and therefore social complexity, in ants. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The presence of carotenoids in the Niphargus tatrensis Wrzesniowski and Niphargus aquilex schellenbergi Karaban has been investigated. In extracts separated by means of column and thin-layer chromatography, the following carotenoids were identified:
  1. in Niphargus tatrensis: β-carotene, astaxanthin ester, rubixanthin, celaxanthin and astaxanthin.
  2. in Niphargus aquilex schellenbergi: cantha-xanthin, astaxanthin ester, isozeaxanthin (only from Jeker), 4-keto-4′-hydroxy-β-carotene (only from Terzietebronbos), rubixanthin, celaxanthin and astaxanthin.

Heterostyly (i.e., reciprocal placement of anthers and stigmas between two or three floral morphs) is hypothesized to enhance outcrossing and reduce selfing. However, few studies have documented reciprocity among individual plants; instead, mean anther and stigma heights for floral morphs are usually reported, masking interindividual variation. We measured eight floral dimensions for individuals in five populations of three heterostylous Rubiaceae. The three methods used to quantify reciprocity yielded different conclusions regarding the degree to which populations conformed to expectations for heterostylous plants. Only Psychotria poeppigiana had stigma and, to a lesser degree, anther heights in discrete classes. Variation among plants of Bouvardia ternifolia and Psychotria chiapensis yielded a continuum of anther and stigma heights across populations. Comparison of distances between stigma and anthers indicated that only flowers of B. ternifolia had, as expected, a constant value for this distance. Finally, regression relationships between anther and stigma heights and corolla length showed that only in one population each of B. ternifolia and P. poeppigiana, and in P. chiapensis, was distance between anthers and stigmas the same across the range of corolla sizes for both floral morphs. Variation among these species in expression of heterostyly was not clearly linked to phylogenetic relationship or pollinator syndromes. Two approach herkogamous (AH) species were studied for comparison. Flowers of Psychotria brachiata were consistently AH, but flowers of P. pittieri were highly variable. Determining fitness consequences of population-level variation in sexual systems requires studies linking floral morphology to pollinator behavior and pollen transfer.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms that determine the development of a bilaterally symmetrical trait is crucial to the interpretation of patterns of fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Experimental and theoretical studies have indicated that feedback mechanisms both within and between developing traits, may participate in the developmental control of asymmetry. This study provides evidence that naturally occurring patterns of FA are affected by interactions between different traits. We found positive between‐trait correlations in signed FA values for tibia lengths on different legs, but not between wing and tibia FA in two moth species. Further research should investigate if trait functionality is related to this presumed correlated development. An extension of the Rashevsky–Turing model of morphogenesis further showed that correlations between the signed FA values can be generated by feedback mechanisms that regulate growth patterns between traits. We argue that such feedback mechanisms can be expected to be widespread and show that between‐trait correlations in the unsigned FA then become confounded with correlations in the signed FA. In addition, correlated development appeared to invalidate the use of the hypothetical repeatability to translate correlations between the unsigned FA values into correlations in the presumed underlying developmental instability. In conclusion, the presence of an organism‐wide asymmetry, which are most frequently found in morphologically integrated traits, may be even less common than previously thought. This study provides comprehensive documentation of silk production in the pest moth Helicoverpa armigera from gland secretion to extrusion of silk thread. The structure of the silk glands, accessory structures and extrusion apparatus are reported. The general schema of the paired silk glands follows that found for Lepidoptera. Morphology of the duct, silk press, muscle attachments and spigot are presented as a three-dimensional reconstruction and the cuticular crescent-shaped profile of the silk press is demonstrated in both open and closed forms with attendant muscle blocks, allowing advances in our knowledge of how the silk press functions to regulate the extrusion of silk. Growth of the spigot across instars is documented showing a distinctive developmental pattern for this extrusion device. Its shape and structure are related to use and load-bearing activity.  相似文献

Variations in seed characteristics observed in heteromorphic species may affect various stages of their life cycles, e.g. seed dormancy, germination characteristics or even adult plant performance. Highly specialised seed morphs – described as colonisers and maintainers – exhibit a trade‐off between colonisation capacity and competitive traits. The performance of distinct seed morph progeny under competitive conditions, and especially in multi‐species arrangements, had previously not been given much attention. In this study, we compared performance and response to competition among distinct seed morph progenies in two congeneric, co‐occurring species: the invasive Bidens frondosa and the non‐invasive Bidens tripartita. We hypothesised that maintainer seed morphs of both species would perform better under increased plant densities and within inter‐morphic mixtures, while coloniser morphs would show stronger responses to increased densities and perform relatively poorly in inter‐morphic mixtures. We conducted a growth trial and a greenhouse experiment, which revealed that seed morph progeny differed significantly in plant height when grown without competition, while under competitive conditions such differences became less apparent. The observed pattern was more strongly pronounced in B. frondosa, which showed a general predominance in stature and biomass over its non‐invasive congener. Although seed morphs performed equally well under competitive conditions, increased plant height and more rapid germination can favour the maintainer seed morph on sites where vegetation is already present.  相似文献

Amyloids are primarily known for their roles in neurodegenerative disorders, as well as in systemic diseases like diabetes. Evolutionary forces tend to maintain a healthy set of heritable characteristics, while eliminating toxic or unfavourable elements; but amyloids seem to represent an exception to this fundamental concept. In addition to their presence in mammals, amyloids also persist in the proteome of many lower organisms that may be linked with possible roles in survival, which are still unexplored. Herein, we address some unanswered questions regarding amyloids: are these well‐structured proteinaceous aggregates a by‐product of inefficient folding events, or have they been retained in our protein repertoire for as yet unknown functional roles; and how do protein misfolding and associated disorders originate, despite the presence of protein quality‐control systems inside the cells? This review aims to extend our current understanding about the multifaceted useful properties of amyloids and their functional interactions with other molecular pathways in various species; this may provide new insights to identify novel therapeutic strategies for ageing and neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

Previous studies of coastal river otters (Lontra canadensis)in Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA, documented atypical socialorganization for mammals. Social groups were composed largelyof males, but some males remained solitary year-round and mostfemales were asocial. Because, in carnivores, groups are usuallycomposed of highly related individuals but group living alsoprovides advantages unrelated to kinship, we concurrently evaluatedthe role of relatedness and ecological benefits in socialityamong coastal river otters. By using DNA microsatellite analysisand radiotelemetry, we were able to reject the hypothesis thatsocial groups of otters were kin based. In addition, we foundno indication of kin avoidance, as would be expected from lowdispersal and high local competition. Sociality conferred noreproductive benefits or costs to otters; number of offspringand number of relatives in the population did not differ betweensocial and solitary animals. Solitary males were not older orlarger than were social males, and there was no relation betweenmale size and number of offspring, indicating that sexual selectiondid not mask a potential relation between sociality and reproductivesuccess. Among coastal river otters in this region, socialitycould be explained by the benefits obtained from cooperativeforaging on high-quality schooling pelagic fishes. Such benefitsdid not require association with kin, resulting in no selectionpressure for kin-based groups. The prediction that the degreeof sociality in the population will fluctuate relative to theabundance of schooling pelagic fishes merits further investigation.  相似文献

In patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) the relation among exocrine pancreatic secretion, gastrointestinal hormone release, and motility is disturbed. We studied digestive and interdigestive antroduodenal motility and postprandial gut hormone release in 26 patients with CP. Fifteen of these patients had pancreatic insufficiency (PI) established by urinary para-aminobenzoic acid test and fecal fat excretion. Antroduodenal motility was recorded after ingestion of a mixed liquid meal. The effect of pancreatic enzyme supplementation was studied in 8 of the 15 CP patients with PI. The duration of the postprandial antroduodenal motor pattern was significantly (P < 0.01) prolonged in CP patients (324 +/- 20 min) compared with controls (215 +/- 19 min). Antral motility indexes in the first hour after meal ingestion were significantly reduced in CP patients. The interdigestive migrating motor complex cycle length was significantly (P < 0.01) shorter in CP patients (90 +/- 8 min) compared with controls (129 +/- 8 min). These abnormalities were more pronounced in CP patients with exocrine PI. After supplementation of pancreatic enzymes, these alterations in motility reverted toward normal. Digestive and interdigestive antroduodenal motility are abnormal in patients with CP but significantly different from controls only in those with exocrine PI. These abnormalities in antroduodenal motility in CP are related to maldigestion.  相似文献

The southern snow skink Niveoscincus microlepidotus is a viviparous alpine lizard with biennial reproduction, in which embryos are fully developed before winter but parturition is delayed until spring. We aimed to determine whether, in this species, in vitro uterine preparations are responsive to arginine vasotocin (AVT) and prostaglandin (PGF) in autumn and spring, and whether pre-treatment with the β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol decreases the effectiveness of AVT in stimulating uterine contractions. Using the spotted snow skink (Niveoscincus ocellatus), an annually breeding species, we aimed to determine influences of temperature and the β-adrenergic system upon the response to AVT in vivo. In both N. microlepidotus and N. ocellatus females are more responsive to AVT than to PGF, and that the response to AVT is decreased, but not prevented, by β-adrenergic stimulation. In N. microlepidotus, uteri are equally responsive in both seasons to the hormones administered. In N. ocellatus environmental conditions, specifically, temperature, modulate the response to AVT in vivo with the time to parturition increasing as temperature decreases. We conclude that in these viviparous squamates the endocrine cascade leading to parturition is modulated by the β-adrenergic system, and that this may reflect the mechanism by which the timing of parturition is tied to suitable environmental conditions.  相似文献

Scarce and controversial information on visual organs and their innervation in Onychophora currently do not allow a thorough comparison with Euarthropoda. Therefore, this study sets out to provide additional data on the architecture and morphogenesis of the onychophoran visual system and to explore similarities and differences between the visual organs of onychophorans and other arthropods. Based on the new data for Epiperipatus biolleyi (Peripatidae) and Metaperipatus blainvillei (Peripatopsidae), it is suggested that the compound eyes represent an autapomorphy of Euarthropoda since similarities with the onychophoran eyes are weak or absent. Instead, the innervation from a central rather than lateral part of the brain, the presence of only one (paired or unpaired) visual center, and a similar ontogenetic origin from an ectodermal groove rather than a proliferation zone suggest homology between the onychophoran eyes and the median ocelli of euarthropods. In conclusion, I suggest that the last common ancestor of arthropods bore only one pair of ocellus-like visual organs that were modified in several arthropod lineages. This hypothesis is supported by recent paleontological data.  相似文献
