After larval settlement, juvenile bivalves may rapidly re-enter the water column and attain secondary dispersal by byssus-drifting. In order to estimate the quantitative importance of byssus-drifting, the abundance of drifters in the water column, their re-entry into the sediment, and their density in the ambient sediment were measured simultaneously over 3 months on a tidal flat in Königshafen near the Island of Sylt in the North Sea. Turnover of juvenile clamsMacoma balthica and cocklesCerastoderma edule was more than once per week in summer, showing strong short-term variability because of semi-lunar rhythms of drifting activity. While there is currently no evidence for active habitat selection in settlingM. balthica andC. edule larvae, it is suggested that habitat selection occurs following postlarval migrations.  相似文献

The responses of the burrowing bivalves Macoma balthica and Cerastoderma edule to chemical cues emitted by feeding shore crabs Carcinus maenas were investigated. M. balthica held in the laboratory and exposed to chemical signals in effluent water discharging from tanks containing C. maenas fed 20 M. balthica day− 1 reacted by increasing their burial depths from approximately 30 mm to depths of > 60 mm, over a period of several days. When the signal was removed the bivalves gradually returned to their original depth over 5 days. C. edule similarly exposed to effluent from crabs feeding on conspecifics showed no response. In an attempt to identify the signal inducing this burrowing response, M. balthica were exposed to a variety of chemical signals. Crabs fed M. balthica elicited the strongest response, followed by crabs fed C. edule. There were also small responses to effluent from crabs fed on fish, crabs previously fed on M. balthica and to crab faeces, but no responses to starved crabs, crushed M. balthica, or controls. We conclude that increased burrowing depth of M. balthica is induced by some as yet unidentified chemical cue produced by feeding crabs and is strongest when the crabs were fed on M. balthica. Unexpectedly, neither the presence of crabs themselves, nor of damaged conspecifics, was effective in eliciting a burrowing response. The mortality rates of M. balthica and C. edule selected by crabs when burrowed at normal depths and after exposure to effluent from feeding crabs were different. Crabs selected 1.5 times more C. edule than M. balthica when both species were burrowed at their normal depths, but 15 times more after the tanks had been exposed to effluent from feeding crabs for 5 days. The burrowing response of M. balthica thus appears to reduce mortality significantly by displacing predation pressure on to the more accessible C. edule.  相似文献

Variability in infaunal bivalve abundance in the Wadden Sea is largely determined by recruitment variability. Post-settlement, but pre-recruitment bivalve mortality is high and related to the occurrence of their most abundant predator, the brown shrimp Crangon crangon. To investigate if the mortality patterns of newly settled bivalves can be explained by the foraging behavior of brown shrimp, we carried out experiments on shrimp functional response to three size classes of juveniles of the Baltic Tellin Macoma balthica. The functional response curves for all three prey sizes (0.62 mm, 0.73 mm, and 0.85 mm) were the hyperbolic Holling's type II. The attack rate was highest for the smallest prey size (a = 0.31, medium and large prey a = 0.22); the handling time was longest for the largest prey size (Th = 29 s, small and medium prey Th = 15 s). Thus, a large body size is advantageous for the bivalves over the whole density range. Knowledge of individual foraging behavior is needed to model predation mortality of bivalves. The consumption rates in the experiment were theoretically high enough to account for M. balthica mortality in the field.  相似文献

This study comprises a comparative taphonomic analysis of three endobenthic bivalves (Mya arenaria, Cerastoderma edule, and Macoma balthica) derived from a mass accumulation of mainly vertically packed shells from the “Wurster Watt” in Lower Saxony’s Wadden Sea, German Bight. Bulk samples from two transects were analyzed with respect to taxonomic composition, left/right valve presence, counts and weight percentages of taxa, and size-frequency distributions. Taphonomic features including abrasion, fragmentation, encrustation and bioerosion were subjected to a semi-quantitative analysis. Taphonomic results show significant differences with respect to bivalve taxa as well as between transects. Mya arenaria, a large endobenthic bivalve, shows the greatest amount of fragmentation and is often encrusted by balanids and bryozoans. The smaller and more robust Cerastoderma edule has the greatest values for bioerosion especially by the polychaete Polydora ciliata. Macoma balthica, which has the thinnest valves, shows the highest values for abrasion, but low values for the rest of the measured taphonomic features. Taphonomic differences between the taxa, samples and transects are related to (1) the origin of the bivalves (from living populations or exposed colonization horizons), (2) the different size and morphology of the valves (themselves related to mode of life), (3) the taphonomic trajectories of the different bivalves, as well as (4) the varying depositional environment of the two transects.  相似文献

Many soft-bottom benthic invertebrates display sediment-associated patterns of dispersion. Habitat selection experiments have shown that the larvae of some species can choose to settle in favourable habitats, and this process could establish patterns observed in the field. However, many soft-bottom infauna, including the bivalves Cerastoderma edule and Macoma balthica, show postlarval relocation. Such movements could obviate patterns established at initial settlement, and active habitat selection in these postlarval stages may be responsible for adult distributions. We investigated sediment selection in postlarval stages of these bivalves on an intertidal mudflat using a field survey and experiment. Our 1225 m2 grid survey showed a strong spatial correlation between the smallest individuals of both species, which showed no correlation with sediment characteristics. Larger size groups showed increasingly strong associations with sediment type: C. edule with sandy sediments and M. balthica with muddy. In our sediment choice experiment, the numbers of bivalves recruited into muddy, sandy and muddy depression (to detect small-scale hydrodynamic effects) treatments after 2 days in the field were recorded. There were no significant treatment effects in either C. edule or M. balthica. All bivalves were too large to be initial settlers; they were thus relocating individuals. Neither the survey nor the experiment provided any evidence that relocating individuals of these two species could choose the sediment in which they alight. The sediment-related patterns observed in adults of these species must therefore be due to other mechanisms, possibly postsettlement predation by Carcinus maenas and/or an ability to leave less-preferred sediments in a series of migrations until the preferred habitat is found.  相似文献

Background

The Baltic/Wadden Sea eider Somateria mollissima flyway population is decreasing, and this trend is also reflected in the large eider colony at Christiansø situated in the Baltic Sea. This colony showed a 15-fold increase from 1925 until the mid-1990''s, followed by a rapid decline in recent years, although the causes of this trend remain unknown. Most birds from the colony winter in the Wadden Sea, from which environmental data and information on the size of the main diet, the mussel Mytilus edulis stock exists. We hypothesised that changes in nutrients and water temperature in the Wadden Sea had an effect on the ecosystem affecting the size of mussel stocks, the principal food item for eiders, thereby influencing the number of breeding eider in the Christiansø colony.

Methodology/Principal Finding

A positive relationship between the amount of fertilizer used by farmers and the concentration of phosphorus in the Wadden Sea (with a time lag of one year) allowed analysis of the predictions concerning effects of nutrients for the period 1925–2010. There was (1) increasing amounts of fertilizer used in agriculture and this increased the amount of nutrients in the marine environment thereby increasing the mussel stocks in the Wadden Sea. (2) The number of eiders at Christiansø increased when the amount of fertilizer increased. Finally (3) the number of eiders in the colony at Christiansø increased with the amount of mussel stocks in the Wadden Sea.

Conclusions/Significance

The trend in the number of eiders at Christiansø is representative for the entire flyway population, and since nutrient reduction in the marine environment occurs in most parts of Northwest Europe, we hypothesize that this environmental candidate parameter is involved in the overall regulation of the Baltic/Wadden Sea eider population during recent decades.  相似文献

Macroparasite community in molluscs of a tidal basin in the Wadden Sea   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2  
We provide a quantitative inventory of macroparasites in intertidal molluscs from a tidal basin in the Wadden Sea (eastern North Sea). Gastropods and bivalves contained a species rich macroparasite community consisting of trematodes (26 species), turbellarians (1), nematodes (1), copepods (2) and polychaetes (1) in 3,800 host individuals from 10 host species. Highest parasite burdens were observed in the gastropods Hydrobia ulvae and Littorina littorea and in the bivalves Cerastoderma edule and Mytilus edulis. In contrast, only one parasite species and no trematodes were found in Crepidula fornicata. The parasite community in the molluscs was similar to other Western European localities but some parasite species showed obvious differences, related to the large-scale distribution of intermediate and final hosts. Parasitism seems to be a common phenomenon in molluscs of the Wadden Sea and hence the detrimental effects observed in experiments can be expected to frequently happen in the field.  相似文献

A sensitive HPLC method is presented for the determination of the imino acids alanopine and strombine, anaerobic metabolites that are formed in muscle tissue of several species of invertebrates. The separation of alanopine and strombine was achieved using the Alltech OA 2000 cation-exchange column. The analysis of the two opines does not require any complicated derivatization and can be performed in a pH neutralized sulphuric acid solution. The sensitivity of this method is in the range of 100 pmol at least 10 nmol for both investigated opines. For the first time opines were demonstrated in the bivalves Macoma balthica and Cerastoderma edule.  相似文献

A strain affiliated with the Roseobacter clade and producing a new antibiotic named tropodithietic acid (L. Liang, Ph.D. thesis, University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, 2003) was isolated from the German Wadden Sea. The compound showed strong inhibiting properties with respect to marine bacteria of various taxa and marine algae. Antibiotic production was found to occur during the complete growth phase. Strain mutants without antagonistic properties appeared several times spontaneously.  相似文献

Intertidal mussel beds were severely damaged by scouring ice floes during the winter of 1995/96. Aerial surveys before and after the winter showed that more clusters of mussel beds vanished in a region with a higher areal share of tidal flats and a lower salinity, suggesting that the amount of ice present determined the magnitude of the disturbance on beds of Mytilus edulis. Nehls and Thiel [(1993) Neth J Sea Res 31:181–187] observed a strikingly similar spatial pattern of disturbances caused by severe storms in the Wadden Sea. Areas on mussel beds mechanically undisturbed by ice showed no reduced abundance and biomass of mussels, indicating that temperature alone was of little importance as a lethal factor. Conversely, Cerastoderma edule was strongly affected by low temperature. On average 80% died during the winter with extinctions up to 100% in the high tidal zone. At the lowest tidal level, surviving cockles were larger than those killed by the frost. A reinvestigation of sampled sites in autumn revealed that substantial further mortality had occurred during spring and summer which may constitute a time-lag effect of the preceding winter. There was no increased mortality in juvenile and adult Mya arenaria during the winter of 1995/96, confirming that this clam is a hard-winter species like Macoma balthica. The bivalve Macoma balthica is a common species in the Wadden Sea and North Sea. Juveniles temporarily use nurseries in the high intertidal. To explain this nursery use, predation pressure was examined for both juvenile and adult Macoma at low and high tidal flats. The study was carried out in the eastern Dutch Wadden Sea.Shrimps Crangon crangon, adult crabs Carcinus maenas, gobies Pomatoschistus and juvenile flatfish were more abundant and larger on low than on high tidal flats, but 0-group Carcinus was more abundant on the high tidal flats. Crangon and 0-group Carcinus stomachs frequently contained Macoma remains. These predators selectively preyed on small 0-group Macoma, both in the field and in laboratory experiments. The effect of predation by epibenthic animals and birds, on the low and high tidal flats, was examined in exclosure experiments (2 mm mesh). There was no effect of epibenthos exclosure on adult Macoma. For 0-group Macoma, densities were higher in exclosures than in the controls where predators had normal access. The density reduction by epibenthic predators was much larger in the low than in the high intertidal. We found no effect of bird predation on densities of 0- and 1+group Macoma.Thus, 0-group Macoma is under high predation pressure by epibenthos in the low intertidal, especially by shrimps, while they are relatively safe in the high intertidal. However, most of the shellfish outgrow their epibenthic predators during their first summer. Therefore, it becomes safe for the bivalves to redistribute to locations where epibenthic predators are abundant, during their first winter. On the other hand, it did not become clear from this study why many of the larger Macoma leave the high intertidal. Concluding, the nursery use of Macoma-spat in the high intertidal is probably, at least partly, an adaptation to avoid epibenthic predation.  相似文献

Macrofauna density and bioturbation intensity (measured with X-ray radiography), were studied in the Dutch Wadden Sea near Ameland and in Mok Bay, Texel, in September 1988. The bivalveMacoma balthica and the polychaeteHeteromastus filiformis were widely distributed in the areas studied. The cockleCerastoderma edule and the polychaeteScoloplos armiger did not occur in areas with high clay content, while the molluscsHydrobia ulvae andMya arenaria preferred fine sediments. The polychaeteNereis diversicolor preferred the higher parts of the intertidal. In the Ameland area disturbance of primary sediment structures was highest near the shore and near the middle of the tidal confluence where physical reworking was low. The sheltered Mok Bay sediments were completely reworked by deposit-feeders. Bioturbation intensity and deposit-feeder (bioturbator) density were, however, not highly correlated. A number of stations showed higher bioturbation towards the surface and this may be related to the high abundance of near surface dwelling macrofauna, due to eutrophication and organic enrichment of the sediments in recent years.  相似文献

High recruitment of the bivalves Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Macoma balthica and Mya arenaria in summer after severe winters is an often reported phenomenon in the Wadden Sea. After the severe winter of 1995/96 however, only Cerastoderma and Mytilus followed this pattern in the Sylt-R?m? Bight. Repeated sampling of Cerastoderma, Macoma and Mya following a severe (1995/96), a moderate (1996/97), and a mild winter (1997/98) revealed that early recruitment was highest after the mild winter. In Cerastoderma the eventual high recruitment at the end of summer 1996 was caused by reduced benthic mortality. Low recruitment of Macoma and Mya after the severe winter may have been caused by a higher susceptibility to epibenthic predation and/or a higher susceptibility to passive re-suspension than in Cerastoderma and Mytilus. Seasonal patterns of changes in length and weight during their second year of life were studied in two intertidal populations of the tellinid bivalve Macoma balthica (L.), viz. in The Netherlands (Wadden Sea) and in France (Seine estuary). The Wadden Sea population showed a single and short annual period of growth in spring (March through June), followed by a long annual period of nearly stagnant length growth and loss of weight of the soft parts. The Seine population started to grow earlier in the year (February), likewise retarded growth in summer, but restarted in autumn, thus showing a dual annual growing season with periods of rapid gain of length and weight both during spring and in October.The timing and the presence and absence of a second annual growing season are discussed in relation to temperature and feeding conditions in the various habitats.  相似文献

The North American spionid polychaeteMarenzelleria cf.wireni was first recorded in the North Sea by Scotland in 1982.Marenzelleria cf.viridis was first found in the Baltic Sea in 1985. Tentative routes of dispersal since then are presented in this paper. In the Netherlands, a biological monitoring programme has revealed populations ofM. cf.wireni in the Ems estuary, Wadden Sea, and in the SW Netherlands. In the Dollard (Ems estuary) a large population has developed (2000–3000 individuals m?2; 8–16 g ash-free dry weight m?2). Since the introduction, the macrozoobenthic community has changed from being dominated (by biomass) by bivalves, to domination by polychaetes. The pre-spawning condition of adult bivalves is influenced by quantity and quality of available food. For bivalves, the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) 20:5(n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 22:6(n-3) are presumed to determine the nutritional value of algae. Macoma balthica kept on a broodstock diet supplemented with PUFAs spawned a larger number of eggs (average 22220) per female and larger sized eggs (106.7 μm) compared to adults kept on a diet without PUFA supplementation (962.5 eggs with average size 99.8 μm).Larvae of M. balthica from the same parental pool however did not profit from a diet where a part was replaced with PUFA spheres. Instead, larvae reared on Isochrysis sp. showed lower mortality and higher growth rates than larvae fed on the same algae supplemented with lipid spheres. Crassostrea gigas larvae showed no clear response to a PUFA supplemented diet.  相似文献

The anaerobic metabolism of Mytilus edulis, Cardium edule, Scrobicularia plana and Macoma balthica was investigated. On exposure to the atmosphere, all of these species were found to be able to utilise 14CO2. This suggests that these species gape during exposure to the atmosphere. A comparative study on the pattern of 14C incorporation suggests that there is a similarity between M. edulis and S. plana in the extent of the utilization of the succinate pathway during exposure to air. However C. edule and M. balthica were also similar in the extent of utilizing the succinate pathway, even though there were significant species differences between the similar animals. It is suggested that exposure in S. plana represents a stressful situation and that this species might react to this stress by utilizing the succinate pathway. A higher incorporation of radiocarbon into alanine by M. balthica could be due to high activity of the enzymes that control the reactions leading to production of radioactive pyruvate.  相似文献

Near the East Frisian island of Norderney two sites are investigated permanently in order to study long-term fluctuations of macrozoobenthos: one transect (since 1977) at the northern side in shallow subtidal waters and another one (since 1976) at the sheltered southern side in the intertidal area of the Wadden Sea. Since 1980 the investigations have been continued in the frame of COST-47, sedimentary intertidal programme (including the shallow subtidal habitats colonized by the Macoma balthica community).The results up to 1984, respectively to 1985, are presented and the changes of abundance of the dominant species are discussed. Discussed are also the influences of water temperatures and sediment disturbances caused by wave action. There is evidence that the intertidal variety of the Macoma balthica community shows a greater stability than the subtidal variety.  相似文献

Population dynamics are typically affected by a combination of density-independent and density-dependent factors, the latter of which have been conceptually and theoretically linked with how variable population sizes are over time—which in turn has been tied to how prone populations are to extinction. To address evidence for the occurrence of density dependence and its relationship with population size variability (pv), we quantified each of these for 126 populations of 8 species of Salmoniformes. Using random-effects models, we partitioned variation in the strength of density dependence and the magnitude of pv between and within species and estimated the correlation of density dependence and population size variability at both the between- and within-species levels. We found that variation in the strength of density dependence was predominately within species (I 2 = 0.47). In contrast, variation in population size variability was distributed both between and within species (I 2 = 0.40). Contrary to theoretical and conceptual expectations, the strength of density dependence and the magnitude of population size variability were positively correlated at the between species level (r = 0.90), although this estimate had 95 % credibility intervals (Bayesian analogues to confidence intervals) that overlapped zero. The within-species correlation between density dependence and population size variability was not distinguishable from zero. Given that density dependence for Salmoniformes was highly variable within species, we next determined the joint effects of intrinsic (density-dependent) and extrinsic (density-independent) factors on the population dynamics of a threatened salmonid, the Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi). We found that density-dependent and -independent factors additively contributed to population dynamics. This finding suggests that the observed within-species variability in density dependence might be attributable to local differences in the strength of density-independent factors.  相似文献

Ocean acidification is causing severe changes in the inorganic carbon balance of the oceans. The pH conditions predicted for the future oceans are, however, already regularly occurring in the Baltic Sea, and the system might thus work as an analogue for future ocean acidification scenarios. The characteristics of the Baltic Sea with low buffering capacity and large natural pH fluctuations, in combination with multiple other stressors, suggest that OA effects may be severe, but remain largely unexplored. A calcifying species potentially affected by low pH conditions is the bivalve Macoma balthica (L.). We investigated larval survival and development of M. balthica by exposing the larvae to a range of pH levels: 7.2, 7.4, 7.7 and 8.1 during 20 days in order to learn what the effects of reduced pH are on the larval biology and thus also potentially for the population dynamics of this key species. We found that even a slight pH decrease causes significant negative changes during the larval phase, both by slowing growth and by decreasing survival. The growth was slower in all reduced pH treatments compared to the control treatment. The size of 250 µm that is considered indicative to imminent settling in our system was reached by 22% of the larvae grown in control conditions after 20 days, whereas in all reduced pH treatments the size of 250 µm was reached by only 7–14%. The strong impact of ocean acidification on larvae is alarming as slowly growing individuals are exposed to higher predation risk in response to the longer time they are required to spend in the plankton, further decreasing the ecological competence of the species.  相似文献
