A fully normal meiosis was found inAllium sativum L. by means of PMC analysis. Quadrivalents were formed only in several cultivars. The cultivation of inflorescence stem (after the exstirpation of bulblets) in a tetracycline solution of 900 i.u. induced a formation of fertile flowers. The first pollen mitosis was studied and the pollen parameters compared with those ofAllium cepa L. Evidence for the pollen sterility was given by crossings on sterile types. The life cycles, programme of energy expenditure and allocation to reproduction, and the reproductive efforts of three wildAllium species, i.e.,A. Victorialis ssp.platyphyllum, A. monanthum, andA. Grayi, all native to Japan, were studied and compared. Furthermore, their adaptive strategies were discussed from the point of view of life history strategy. First, the reproductive systems, number of male and female gametes borne, and the number and size of propagules produced were critically investigated. In order to estimate the crude reproductive efficiency (sensu Harper and Ogden, 1970) of these species, sequential harvests were taken and the plants were divided into their component structures, dried and weighed. The quantity of dry weight allocated to sexual or vegetative reproduction was obtained by weighing the seeds, bulbils, or bulblets produced at the end of the season. A. Victorialis ssp.platyphyllum showed a rather low reproductive effort. However, the mean seed output per plant was 34.8±16.8 and the productivity appeared very constant every season. Thus, in the natural populations young plants are borne and recruited every season by means of sexual reproduction. A. monanthum was found to be characterized by annual type dry matter economy. The sexuality and reproductive systems of this species turned out to be extremely complex, and ten different reproductive types were distinguished. The exceedingly low efficiency of sexual reproduction in this species is apparently supplemented by vegetative propagation. The dry matter allocation to daughter bulbs at final harvest was very high; whereas the allocation to sexual reproduction was extremely low. InA. Grayi (a polyploid complex of 4X, 5X, and 6X), a surprisingly high amount of the total annual net assimilate is allocated to the bulbils and bulblets. On the other hand, sexual reproductive effort in this species is exceedingly low, even in obligate amphimictic plants. Thus, the recruitment of individuals in a population of this species appears to be largely dependent on vegetative reproduction. Considering the number of bulbils produced in the scape heads, their dispersibility, germinability, and rapid growth after sprouting, the bulbils evidently possess a function almost comparable to seeds. This species no doubt possesses an adapative strategy to unstable, open habitats exposed to frequent disturbances. It is concluded that the life history strategies of plants, as characterized here in this paper for three wildAllium species, have doubtlessly differentiated by adapting to the respective ecological backgrounds of their habitats.  相似文献

The influence of two esterase loci, each possessing two alleles (Est1 s ,Est1 f andEst2 s ,Est2 f ), on the rate of reproduction in haploid yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) during the vegetative phase, as well as on the rate of meiosis and on the vitality of spores was investigated. Alleles of theEst1 locus had no apparent effect on the rate of vegetative reproduction. In contrast, genotypes with theEst2 f allele possessed a definite selective advantage. Whereas theEst2 locus had no demonstrable influence on meiosis,Est1 s /Est1 s homozygotes, in contrast to the other two genotypes, exhibited an increased rate of meiosis. A connection between spore lethality and those esterases in question could not be demonstrated.  相似文献

Bioactive natural compounds from garlic and onions have been the focus of researches for decades, firstly due to their pharmacological effects, and secondly due to their defence properties against plant diseases. In fact, garlic and onion, belonging to Allium genus, are among the oldest food plants known since ancient times and used as ingredient of many recipes and for therapeutic properties. These plants are well known to produce bioactive apolar sulphur compounds but less is known about their polar natural compounds, such as phenols, sapogenins and saponins, that are more stable to cooking, So, we continued our work on the discovery of polar bioactive metabolites from Allium with the isolation of a number of sapogenins and saponins from the wild onion species Allium elburzense, Allium hirtifolium, Allium atroviolaceum, and Allium minutiflorum, and, more recently, from the cultivated white onion, Allium cepa, and garlic, Allium sativum. In particular, the sapogenins and saponins isolated from A. elburzense and A. hirtifolium, named elburzensosides and hirtifoliosides respectively, exhibited significant antispasmodic properties. In addition, the saponins named minutosides isolated from A. minutiflorum showed promising antimicrobial activity. More recently the phytochemical analysis of A. cepa and A. sativum has been undertaken and afforded the characterization of saponins, phenols and N-cynnamic amides which showed significant antifungal activity.  相似文献

Structure and behaviour of the underground organs ofIris vartani were investigated in connection with the vegetative reproduction of this species. Under favourable conditions, well developed mature plants give rise to two replacement bulbs and to several propagation bulblets each year. In spite of this considerable vegetative propagation, no crowding occurs at the natural habitat. Controlled experiments show that as soon as a small group is formed, each bulb produces only one replacement bulb and not two as before. Moreover, the bulblets do not sprout while they are attached to the respective mother bulbs, but rather die and disintegrate, remaining as empty peels. In contrast, detached bulblets, sown individually in separate pots, germinate readily. Consequently, the aggregates ofI. vartani do not increase to any great extent and thus ensure their survival “in situ” for many years.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific hybrids between Allium cepa and Allium sativum were obtained using the fertile clone A. sativum as the male parent. The nascent embryos which formed shortly in interspecific hybridization between A. cepa and A. sativum were rescued by ovule culture at an early stage. The zygotes or proembryos developed in Murashige and Skoog medium containing 5.7×10-8 M indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Once developed, the embryos were taken out of the ovule and cultured on embryo culture medium where they regenerated into whole plants. The hybridity of the plants obtained was examined by morphological observation, chromosome analysis, and ribosomal RNA gene analysis. The analyses proved that the plants were mature sexual hybrids between A. cepa and A. sativum. Each hybrid plant had keeled but fistulose leaves and formed a bulb resembling that of A. cepa. The hybrids produced not only S-propenyl-l-cysteine sulfoxide, which is the major flavor precursor in A. cepa, but also S-allyl-l-cysteine sulfoxide (alliin), which is characteristic of A. sativum.  相似文献

Living populations of Gymnodinium baicalense Ant. from Lake Baikal were studied. It has been shown that G. baicalense var. minor Ant. is a life stage of G. baicalense, whose species size is smaller than it is given in the diagnosis. Morphology of the living vegetative cells of G. baicalense is close to that of G. wigrense Wolosz. These species share ecological features. The vegetative cells form endogenous resting cysts. The sexual reproduction takes place in the period of the mass development of the species. The author believes that it is a relict species, which formed in the Ice age.  相似文献

The chromosomes of different strains of the top or tree onion, ofAllium cepa andA. fistulosum, as well as of cloned progenies from reciprocal crosses between these two taxa have been studied by application of Feulgen- or aceto carmine-, Giemsa- and silver staining. It was possible to differentiate between the satellite chromosomes and 2–4 other chromosome pairs ofA. cepa andA. fistulosum. The phylogenetic origin of the top onions [A. ×proliferum (Moench)Schrad.] from hybridization ofA. cepa andA. fistulosum is substantiated, taking into consideration the variability in size and position of satellites and of active NORs.  相似文献

Two viviparous strains of common onion (Allium cepa) denoted asAllium cepa var.viviparum (syn.Allium ×proliferum), traditionally cultivated in the seaside regions of Croatia were found to be diploid (2n = 2x = 16) and triploid (2n = 3x = 24), respectively. The triploid cultivated onion Ljutika has not been previously reported in Europe. Using Feulgen and Giemsa C-banding methods both karyotypes were shown to be of hybrid constitution. Results obtained in this work indicate that Dalmatian viviparous onions arose from spontaneous hybridization ofA. cepa withA. fistulosum.  相似文献

Changes in mitotic activity and frequency of spontaneous chromosomeaberrations have been determined for primary roots of Zea muys,Pisum sativum, Vicia faba var. green Windsor and var. minor,and Allium cepa. Mitotic activity was found to decline withage in all root apices. In the primary root apices immediately after germination, therewas a high frequency of spontaneous chromosome aberrations whichdeclined with time after germination. Neither the incubation of the flower scapes of garlic (Allium sativum L.) in tetracycline solution nor the extirpation of the bulblets from the inflorescences led to the development of fertile binuclear pollen. Higher tetracycline concentrations than 125 mg per litre showed a clearly phytotoxic effect. The removal of the bulblets from the inflorescences improved the survival of flowers but it enabled only the initial stages of seed development. The seeds obtained were defective and not able to germinate. The hypothesis on infectious nature of the factors causing sterility in garlic is discussed.  相似文献

Lilium candidum L., commonly known as the Madonna lily, is a wild Lilium species with medicinal properties and excellent potential as an ornamental crop, but one that has been scarcely investigated. The aim of this research was to study (1) tissue culture propagation of L. candidum bulblets, (2) early bulblet development, and (3) the effect of temperature and bulblet weight on bulblet and plant growth and meristem development. An investigation of the effect of explant type and temperature on in vitro bulblet propagation showed that scales were the most efficient explants for in vitro propagation and that exposing the regenerating bulblets to 15°C for 4 wk increased bulblet weight but reduced the number of bulblets produced. For bulblets planted in soil after 12 wk of exposure to 15°C or 25°C, the fastest growth was observed in the bulblets that had been exposed to 15°C and that had a larger initial size. Histological examination showed that young in vitro-grown bulblets had a rudimentary meristem comprising few cells with no layer organization. After 12 wk of growth, all bulblets showed a layered meristem, regardless of bulblet size or exposure to 15°C. However, an increased amount of leaf primordia was detected in larger bulblets. Furthermore, the histological examination revealed that in L. candidum, as opposed to other lily species, there had been no real "phase change" in the meristem and that the phase change from juvenile to vegetative adult occurred at a much later stage in L. candidum than in other species.  相似文献

The selective forces imposed by agricultural practices have resulted in the evolution of agricultural races of weeds or agroecotypes. Some agroecotypes are intimately associated with a specific crop. Such associations can involve a system of mimicry, whereby the weed resembles the crop at specific stages during its life history and, as a result of mistaken identity, evades eradication. Mimetic forms of weeds are most likely to be selected by handweeding of seedlings or by harvesting and seed cleaning procedures. A striking example of morphological and phenological resemblance is found in the cultivated rice mimic,Echinochloa crus-galli var.oryzicola, a native of Asian rice fields but now widely distributed in rice-growing areas of the world. Comparative studies of the growth, devel-opment and patterns of phenotypic variation of cultivated rice,E. crus-galli var.oryzicola andE. crus-galli var.crus-galli demonstrate that the crop mimic is more similar to rice in many attributes than it is to its close relative. It is proposed that intense handweeding practices in Asia constitute the main selective force favoring the evolution of rice mimicry inE. crus-galli var.oryzicola.  相似文献

This paper examines the cost of meiosis in a species with an alternation of sexual and asexual generations (e.g. Daphnia), by means of calculations of the survival probabilities of mutant genes causing patterns of wholly asexual reproduction. It is shown that the survival probabilities of such mutations are lower with an alternation of sexual and asexual generations than with an initial population which reproduces exclusively sexually. The survival probabilities decrease as the number of asexual generations within each reproductive cycle increases. It is argued that these results imply a lower than usual cost of meiosis when there is an alternation of generations, and that asexual reproduction cannot simply be equated with vegetative growth of a single multicellular organism.  相似文献

The extent of changes in basic physiological and demographic traits associated with reproduction was investigated in the highly cultivated haploid–diploid red alga, Gracilaria chilensis. Sixty individuals bearing vegetative and reproductive fronds collected in the natural population of Niebla (39°52′?S, 73°23′?W), in Chile, were cultivated under controlled culture conditions. Our results demonstrated that vegetative fronds have a higher survival rate and a better growth rate than reproductive ones irrespective of the type of individual analyzed (male gametophyte, female gametophyte, and tetrasporophyte). Moreover, the reproductive fronds clearly showed a decrease in photosynthetic activity compared to non-reproductive ones. In males and tetrasporophytes, the photosynthetic reduction in reproductive individuals could be explained by a physical effect of reproductive structure development as well as spores release, disrupting the continuity of the photosynthetic cortical tissues. Translocation of photoassimilates from nearby vegetative tissue or the previous accumulation of photosynthetic products seems to be a prerequisite for reproductive structure development in this species. Altogether, these results document for the first time in G. chilensis that reproduction has a strong physiological effect on male, female, and tetrasporophyte fronds. This trade-off between reproduction, growth, and survival suggest the existence of reproductive costs in the life history of G. chilensis.  相似文献

Quantitatively evaluated C-banding karyograms are presented forAllium carinatum, A. carinatum ssp.pulchellum, andA. flavum of the sectionCodonoprasum Reichenb. Accurate measurements revealed that constitutive heterochromatin (C-bands) is probably additional chromosomal material. The distribution of the C-heterochromatin follows the principle of the equilocal heterochromatin-distribution byHeitz (1933). Furthermore, the pattern shows a relationship to the relative arm-length of the chromosomes in the karyotype. Fluorochrome banding revealed various heterochromatintypes. The C-band patterns ofAllium cupani (sect.Scorodon Koch) andA. vineale (sect.Allium), which are also rich in heterochromatin, are described.  相似文献

Frequency and position of chiasmata at diplotene were studied in pollen mother cells and megaspore mother cells of the same plants of two wild Allium species (A. consanquineum and A. kachrooi) and two cultivated species (a. cepa and A. nigrum), all diploid with 2n=16. Contrary to most reports on sex differences in recombination, chiasma frequencies were higher in male than in female meiosis in all cases. To better understand the genetic diversity and relationships of the two cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea and Japan, we evaluated the genetic variations of 56 accessions by assessing five morphological characteristics and 18 SSR markers. The two cultivated types of var. frutescens and var. crispa were clearly distinguished by seed size, whereas most accessions of cultivated and weedy types of var. crispa cannot be distinguished strictly by seed characteristics. A total of 165 alleles with the SSR analysis were detected with an average number of 9.2 alleles per locus among the 56 Perilla accessions. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two for KWPE-56 and KWPE-39 to 21 for GBPFM-204. Additionally, the genetic diversity of each locus ranged from 0.497 at KWPE-56 and KWPE-39 to 0.959 at GBPFM-204, with an average of 0.692. The average genetic diversity values were 0.549, 0.685, 0.451 and 0.557 for cultivated and weedy types of var. frutescens and for cultivated and weedy types of var. crispa, respectively. The weedy type accessions of var. frutescens and var. crispa evidenced greater variation than the corresponding cultivated type accessions. The accessions of the cultivated and weedy types of var. frutescens and var. crispa from Korea exhibited greater SSR diversity than those of Japan. An UPGMA phylogenetic tree revealed three major groups, which was congruent with their morphological characteristics except for a few odd accessions. SSR markers clarified the genetic relationships between var. frutescens and var. crispa and helped improve our understanding of the genetic diversity of the two cultivated types of P. frutescens and their weedy types in Korea and Japan.  相似文献

Divergent wild and endemic peas differ in hybrid sterility in reciprocal crosses with cultivated pea depending on alleles of a nuclear ‘speciation gene’ involved in nuclear–cytoplasmic compatibility.

Background

In hybrids between cultivated and wild peas, nuclear–cytoplasmic conflict frequently occurs. One of the nuclear genes involved, Scs1, was earlier mapped on Linkage Group III.

Results

In reciprocal crosses of seven divergent pea accessions with cultivated P. sativum, some alleles of Scs1 manifested incompatibility with an alien cytoplasm as a decrease in pollen fertility to about 50 % in the heterozygotes and lack of some genotypic classes among F2 segregants. Earlier, we defined monophyletic evolutionary lineages A, B, C and D of pea according to allelic state of three markers, from nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial genomes. All tested representatives of wild peas from the lineages A and C exhibited incompatibility due to Scs1 deleterious effects in crosses with testerlines of P. sativum subsp. sativum (the common cultivated pea) at least in one direction. A wild pea from the lineage B and a cultivated pea from the lineage D were compatible with the testerline in both directions. The tested accession of cultivated P. abyssinicum (lineage A) was partially compatible in both directions. The Scs1 alleles of some pea accessions even originating from the same geographic area were remarkably different in their compatibility with cultivated Pisum sativum cytoplasm.

Conclusion

Variability of a gene involved in reproductive isolation is of important evolutionary role and nominate Scs1 as a speciation gene.  相似文献
