Aim
To determine whether novobiocin resistance strategy could be used to attenuate a virulent Aeromonas hydrophila AH11P strain and to characterize the growth and pathogenic differences between the novobiocin‐resistant strain and its virulent parent strain AH11P.Methods and Results
A novobiocin‐resistant strain AH11NOVO was obtained from a virulent Aer. hydrophila strain AH11P through selection of resistance to novobiocin. AH11NOVO was found to be avirulent to channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), whereas AH11P was virulent. When AH11NOVO vaccinated channel catfish were challenged with AH11P at 14 days postvaccination, relative per cent of survival of vaccinated fish was 100%. The cell proliferation rate of AH11NOVO was found to be significantly (P < 0·05) less than that of AH11P. In vitro motility assay revealed that AH11NOVO was nonmotile, whereas AH11P was motile. AH11NOVO had significantly (P < 0·05) lower in vitro chemotactic response to catfish mucus than that of AH11P. Although the ability of AH11NOVO to attach catfish gill cells was similar to that of AH11P, the ability of AH11NOVO to invade catfish gill cells was significantly (P < 0·05) lower than that of AH11P.Conclusions
The novobiocin‐resistant AH11NOVO is attenuated and different from its parent AH11P in pathogenicity.Significance and Impact of the Study
The significantly lower chemotactic response and invasion ability of AH11NOVO compared with that of its virulent parent strain AH11P might shed light on the pathogenesis of Aer. hydrophila. 相似文献7.

Background
Helicobacter pylori has undergone considerable adaptation to allow chronic persistence within the gastric environment. While H. pylori‐associated diseases are driven by an excessive inflammation, severe gastritis is detrimental to colonization by this pathogen. Hence, H. pylori has developed strategies to minimize the severity of gastritis it triggers in its host. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is well known for its role in protecting against oxidative attack; less recognized is its ability to inhibit immunity, shown for SOD from mammalian sources and those of some bacterial species. This study examined whether H. pylori SOD (HpSOD) has the ability to inhibit the host immune response to these bacteria.Materials and Methods
The ability of recombinant HpSOD to modify the response to LPS was measured using mouse macrophages. A monoclonal antibody against HpSOD was generated and injected into H. pylori‐infected mice.Results
Addition of HpSOD to cultures of mouse macrophages significantly inhibited the pro‐inflammatory cytokine response to LPS stimulation. A monoclonal antibody was generated that was specific for SOD from H. pylori. When injected into mice infected with H. pylori for 3 months, this antibody was readily detected in both sera and gastric tissues 5 days later. While treatment with anti‐HpSOD had no effect on H. pylori colonization at this time point, it significantly increased the levels of a range of pro‐inflammatory cytokines in the gastric tissues. This did not occur with antibodies against other antioxidant enzymes.Conclusions
SOD from H. pylori can inhibit the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokine during in vivo infection. 相似文献13.

The physiological mechanisms that allow for sleeping in a vertical position, which is primordial for arboreal primates, have not been studied yet.Methods
A non‐invasive polysomnographic study of 6 spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) was conducted. The relative beta power of the motor cortex and its linear relation with muscle tone in the facial mentalis muscle and the abductor caudae medialis muscle of the tail during wakefulness and sleep stages were calculated.Results
A strong negative linear relationship (r = ?.8, P = .03) was found between the relative power of the beta2 band in the left motor cortex and abductor caudae medialis muscle tone during delta sleep.Conclusions
The left motor cortex, through beta2 band activity, interacts with abductor caudae medialis muscle tonicity during delta sleep. This interaction takes part in the mechanisms that regulate the sleep postures. 相似文献14.

Aims
The present study was carried out to screen the phylloplane bacteria from tea for antagonism against grey blight caused by Pestalotiopsis theae and blister bight caused by Exobasidium vexans and to further evaluate the efficient isolates for disease control potential under field condition.Methods and Results
A total of 316 morphologically different phylloplane bacteria were isolated. Among the antagonists, the isolates designated as BMO‐075, BMO‐111 and BMO‐147 exhibited maximum inhibitory activity against both the pathogens under in vitro conditions and hence were selected for further evaluation under microplot field trial. Foliar application of 36‐h‐old culture of BMO‐111 (1 × 108 colony‐forming units ml?1) significantly reduced the blister blight disease incidence than the other isolates. The culture of BMO‐111 as well as its culture filtrate effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of various fungal plant pathogens. The isolate BMO‐111 was identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi based on the morphological and 16S rDNA sequence analyses.Conclusions
It could be concluded that the biocontrol agent O. anthropi BMO‐111 was effective against blister blight disease of tea.Significance and Impact of the Study
Further study is required to demonstrate the mechanism of its action and formulation for the biocontrol potential against blister blight disease of tea. 相似文献17.
