The trail-following behavior of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), was evaluated by comparing the distance between cockroach movement paths and preapplied "trails" of fecal extract. For each cockroach group tested (adult males, females, gravid females, and late instars), the mean perpendicular distance of the cockroach from the trail was significantly less than the distance from a control trail. The results indicated that the German cockroaches did exhibit trail-following behavior. Trail- following accuracy varied among the cockroach groups. The mean distance from the fecal trail ranged from 18.45 to 110.05 cm with adult males < or = adult females < or = late instars < gravid females. Very dilute fecal extract could still induce trail-following behavior in adult male cockroaches. A 5.6% concentration of fecal extract in methanol was able to induce trail-following behavior in 50% of the cockroaches. Although German cockroaches have demonstrated trail-following behavior, fecal trails are still not thought to be actively deposited. Rather, the passive distribution of fecal material within the home range results in the accumulation of trails along frequently traveled routes (i.e., between resources and the cockroach harborage).  相似文献

We determined nonlethal physiological effects of hydroprene on the German cockroach, Blattella germanica L., and the effects of hydroprene exposure on German cockroach susceptibility to traditional insecticides. Live and dry weights of German cockroach adults exposed as nymphs to the juvenile hormone analog hydroprene increased significantly (6-35%) in both sexes. The change in weight was affected by hydroprene dose and time after adult emergence. Hydroprene treatment did not affect total body lipids and carbohydrates consistently. However, total body urates of males and females increased significantly. The susceptible and multiresistant German cockroach strains were significantly more susceptible to propoxur at the lower hydroprene application rate (0.697 mg per tub) than the untreated cockroaches. Hydroprene application also significantly lowered the LD50 for chlorpyrifos of the multiresistant strain at the lower hydroprene application rate. However, hydroprene failed to affect chlorpyrifos susceptibility of the susceptible strain.  相似文献

The relationship between the particle size of an inert silica dust, its up-take from different surfaces and the grooming behaviour of males, gravid females, and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of the German cockroachBlattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) (L.) was investigated. The normal grooming behaviour of gravid females, nymphs and males differed according to sex and age. The gravid females and nymphs exhibited greater grooming activity than the males, especially of the antennae and the legs. Gravid females, nymphs, and adult males exhibited increased grooming activity after exposure to dust in the size range 0.5–63 μm, but there was no significant difference in grooming behaviour from the control when cockroaches were exposed to dust sizes greater than 70 μm. Antennal grooming by males was greater than leg grooming when exposed to all dust sizes, except size particles ranging 4.5–7.5 μm. A dust pick-up experiment indicated that the average amount of dust transferred toB. germanica is affected by particle size, the porosity of the treated surface, and the sex and age of the cockroaches. Gravid females picked up greater amounts of dust than fifth and sixth instar nymphs, which in turn picked up more dust than males. Silica dust particles (0.5–7.5 μm) were picked up more effectively than larger particle sizes, by all three categories, males, females and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of cockroach on all three test surfaces plastic, ceramic and unpainted plywood. Plywood was the least effective surface for transfer of dust, of all sizes, to males, females and nymphs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Effects of early post-embryonic development and ageing on the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in the cockroach, Leucophaea maderae , were investigated. Cockroach nymphs (first to fourth instars) were found to exhibit a circadian rhythm of activity generally similar to that of adults, but there appeared to be a significant change in pacemaker period (τ) early in nymphal development, and nymphs exhibited regular fluctuations in activity level which may be related to the moulting cycle. Mean τ of adults was remarkably stable with age – no significant change was found in either males or females throughout the life span of the adult. There was, however, a small but significant difference between the average period (τ) of adult males (τ= 23.72 ± 0.12h) and adult females (τ= 23.84 ± 0.13 h). Lighting conditions during post-embryonic development were found to have major effects on τ of adults. Males raised in constant darkness had a significantly shorter period (τ= 23.52 ± 0.11 h) than males raised in LD 12:12, and adult males and females which had been raised in non-24-h light cycles (T = 22 h or 26 h) exhibited major differences in τ from animals raised in LD 12:12 which persisted for several months. Animals exposed as adults to non-24-h light cycles also showed 'after-effects' on τ, but the magnitude of the effect was much less than that exhibited by animals exposed as nymphs.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of feeding by the western conifer-seed bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, on seed production in developing cones of coastal Douglas-fir, Pseudostuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, with respect to seed bug life stage and sex (nymphs, adult females, and adult males) and timing of feeding (early, mid-, and late season cone development). Feeding by females on caged cones for a 2-wk period during late season cone development reduced the proportion of full seeds in cones by approximately 70% compared with caged control cones. There was no significant difference among nymphs, adult females, and adult males with respect to the proportion of empty or partially fed-upon seeds produced during the same feeding period. Feeding by nymphs for 2 wk early in the season resulted in a threefold increase in the number of unextractable seeds fused to cones compared with the control. Weight measurements of harvested seeds indicated that radiography is an accurate tool to distinguish among Douglas-fir seeds that have sustained light, moderate, or severe damage. Determining the full impact of L. occidentalis on conifer seed production will require the development of a reliable method to distinguish between naturally aborted seeds and seeds emptied through feeding by seed bugs.  相似文献

An experimental 2.15% imidacloprid gel bait containing approximately 44% water was evaluated in laboratory and field studies against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L). In continuous exposure tests, toxicity and presumably bait consumption varied with cockroach stage, deprivation of competitive food, and temperature. The LT50 values for cockroaches provided with competitive food ranged from approximately 0.9 h for adult females to 190 h for small nymphs. The LT50s for cockroaches not provided competitive food ranged from approximately 1.7 h for adult females to approximately 31 h for adult males. The LT50s decreased exponentially with temperature between 10 and 30 degrees C. Even though the bait was significantly more repellent (approximately 38%) than an untreated control (approximately 14%) when tested in Ebeling choice boxes, performance index values were positive and increased to nearly 100 (indicating high mortality and low repellency) after 14 d. When applied at 15-45 g per kitchen, the bait significantly reduced German cockroach trap catch in infested homes during a 4-wk period. There was a approximately 50% reduction after 1 wk and approximately 80% reduction 4 wk after treatment.  相似文献

Differences in the emergence, movement, and settling patterns of individuals during natal dispersal can provide testable hypotheses about the costs and functions of movement. Emergence, movement, and settling patterns were studied in desert isopods, Hemilepistus reaumuri. The young of this semelparous, monogamous, crustacean emerge from their natal burrows each spring and search for sites to establish new burrows or gain acceptance as mates in occupied burrows. Dispersal was measured in a long, narrow corridor into which individuals marked after emergence were monitored. Females emerged slightly earlier than males with substantial overlap. Size or condition varied with time before settling differently in males and females. Isopods in good or poor condition did not differ in distance traveled, but males in good condition took more time before settling. Small males were more likely to start new burrows and took less time before settling, suggesting they might be acting in anticipation of losing contests for female-initiated burrows. Larger females and those in higher condition were more likely to start new burrows and took less time before settling. The pattern in females could reflect male choice or constraints or costs associated with burrow establishment in females, which should be tested. Measures of dispersal based on recaptures of traveling or recently settled individuals may differ from the distribution of successful reproduction. In this study travelers were observed at shorter average distances than settlers, but successful settlers traveled less far than unsuccessful ones.  相似文献

Field metabolic rates and daily movement distances were measured in 26 individual kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis) over a 29-mo period in the southern Mojave Desert of California. Kit foxes traveled long distances (up to 32 km d(-1)), with males usually traveling farther than females. Daily movement distances were affected by season, since males traveled the greatest distances in spring and females traveled farthest in summer. Individual foxes tracked multiple times demonstrated repeatability of daily movement distance between nights, between summer and winter, and between consecutive winters. The field cost of activity per unit distance was estimated as 15.6 kJ km(-1) from the partial regression coefficient of a multiple linear regression model, a value not significantly different from the incremental cost of locomotion derived from laboratory measurements. The field cost of activity was not affected by season, despite the expectation of higher costs of activity in the winter with increased thermoregulatory expenditure. The large daily movement distances resulted in significant activity energy expenditure (11%-33% of field metabolic rate), with a mean of 21% of field metabolic rate expended in activity during nonreproductive seasons.  相似文献

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is the primary vector of the bacterium causing citrus huanglongbing (citrus greening), the most serious disease of citrus worldwide. Psyllids and other hemipterans produce large amounts of honeydew, which has been used previously as an indicator of phloem sap composition and insect feeding or metabolism. Behavioral, ultrastructural and chemical studies on ACP, its honeydew and waxy secretions showed important differences between nymphs, males and females, and suggested some mechanisms by which the psyllids, especially nymphs and adult females, can minimize their contamination with honeydew excretions. The anal opening in ACP, near the posterior end of the abdomen, is on the ventral side in nymphs and on the dorsal side in adult males and females. Video recordings showed that adult males produce clear sticky droplets of honeydew gently deposited behind their body on the leaf surface, whereas adult females produce whitish honeydew pellets powerfully propelled away from the female body, probably to get their excretions away from eggs and newly hatched nymphs. ACP nymphs produce long ribbons or tubes of honeydew that frequently stay attached to the exuviae after molting, or drop when feeding on the lower side of citrus leaves. Furthermore, honeydew excretions of both nymphs and adult females are covered with a thin layer of whitish waxy material ultrastructurally composed of a convoluted network of long fine filaments or ribbons. This material is extruded from intricate arrays of wax pores in the circumanal ring (around the anus) that is found in nymphs and females but not in males of ACP or other psyllid species. Infrared microscopy and mass spectroscopy revealed that, in addition to various sugars, honeydew excretions of ACP nymphs and females are covered with a thin layer of wax similar in profile to ester waxes.  相似文献

Summary Foraging strategies of a mantid, Paratenodera angustipennis de Saussure were investigated both in the laboratory and in the field to determine how mantids assess the profitability of their location, and based on it, how they switch their tactics. Although mantids are often considered to be ambush predators, nymphs and adult females changed their tactics from ambushing to active searching when they did not capture any prey for more than about 2 days (nymphs) and 3 days (adult females). Switching between the two tactics was such that the females and nymphs spent more searching effort in sites with higher prey density. As opposed to the females and nymphs, male mantids did not change their tactics according to their hunger level (in our definition, and the prey density in the hunting site. The males moved around more than twice as much as did the females. In the field, female mantids moved less frequently at higher female densities.  相似文献

1. A possible adaptive benefit of coprophagy was investigated in nymphs of the German cockroach Blattella germanica (L.). 2. Newly ecdysed first instars, given no source of food other than conspecific faeces, survived significantly longer than first instars deprived of faeces. The faeces of adult males and females may be of different quality, however, because nymphs given female faeces were more likely to moult into the second stadium than nymphs given male faeces. 3. In contrast to first instars, second instars provided adult faeces survived only slightly longer than starved counterparts. Faecal feeding is therefore stage‐specific, as is the benefit derived from it. 4. The relationship between the nutrient composition of faeces and the survival of nymphs was also examined. First instars fed the faeces of adults that had been maintained on a high (50%) protein diet, died more slowly than first instars fed the faeces of adults that had been maintained on medium (22.5%) and low (5%) protein diets. Chemical analysis of faeces showed that the concentration of protein in adult faeces increased with the level of protein in the diet. Moreover, food choice assays showed that first instars, unlike adults, ingested more of the high‐protein diets. 5. These data support the idea that coprophagy is a stage‐specific adaptive behaviour that permits first instars to moult into the second stadium with minimal foraging.  相似文献

Several insecticide bait formulations were evaluated for their attractiveness to cockroaches in olfactometer assays in the laboratory and in trapping experiments in the field. Included in the assays were bait stations, gels, pastes, and a powder that contained one of the following active ingredients: abamectin, boric acid, chlorpyrifos, or hydramethylnon. There were significant differences among the baits in their attractiveness to the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In trapping experiments, Avert powder (abamectin), Maxforce station and gel, and Siege gel (all hydramethylnon) were consistently attractive to B. germanica adults and nymphs. Laboratory olfactometer assays with adult males confirmed these results and showed that nymphs were as responsive as males whereas females were less responsive. Our bioassays also demonstrate that attractiveness of bait can be dramatically affected by the age of the bait. One week of aging significantly reduced the attractiveness of Avert powder in both laboratory and field assays. Aging, however did not diminish the attractiveness of Maxforce gel, indicating that the formulation may be critical for retention of attractiveness of baits. Baits that were most attractive to the German cockroach were also the most attractive to nymphs and adults of the brownbanded cockroach, Supella longipalpa (F.).  相似文献

The possibility of sex and nymph discrimination by males was investigated in the cockroach,Nauphoeta cinerea (Olivier). A sexually mature male takes a courting position toward a sexually mature female when he comes into contact with her and recognizes her through antennal contact. In contrast, males often behave aggressively toward each other: they bite at each others; wings and/or legs, chase each other and antennate mutually. The male, however, does not show conspicuous behavior (mating behavior or aggressive behavior) toward nearby nymphs. The male produces audible sounds when he courts a sexually mature but non-receptive female who does not respond to his courtship behavior. We found that the male also stridulates after he repeatedly courts immature teneral females, males and (last-instar) nymphs. After the bodies of teneral insects are sclerotized, the male shows courship and stridulation behavior toward sexually mature but non-receptive females but not toward mature males and nymphs. At this stage the male begins to behave aggressively toward other post-teneral mature males. We think that the variability of the sexually mature male's behavior toward other conspecifics (courtship behavior toward female, aggressive behavior toward male and no conspicuous response toward nymph) results from the male's recognition of adult and nymph.  相似文献

At 27 degrees C and 45% r.h. in the laboratory, the oriental cockroach Blatta orientalis (L.) developed to adulthood in seven to nine instars for males (66% had eight instars) and eight to ten instars for females (67% had nine instars) in mixed groups, with up to twelve instars for isolated females. Nymphal development lasted 185 +/- 2 days for males, 216 +/- 4 days for females, with 89% survival to adulthood. Adult longevity was significantly more for males than females in mixed groups. Virgin females lived for 135 +/- 6 days compared with 87 +/- 9 days for females kept with males. After an initial maturation time of 12.2-13.5 +/- 0.4 days for mated and unmated females, oothecae were produced, on average, every 6-7 (range 2-29) days. Ootheca viability was 68% from females kept with males, 32% from females kept apart from males. Numbers of nymphs emerging were 14.1 +/- 0.26 after 45 days from mated female oothecae 8.2 +/- 0.3 after 49 days from unmated females. With sexual reproduction the sex ratio of progeny reaching adulthood was 1.1 males per female (n = 443), whereas unmated females produced only female progency, which is consistent with parthenogenetic reproduction. Drawings of the ventral aspect of the terminalia are given to show features useful for instar determination and for distinguishing between male and female nymphs and adults of B. orientalis.  相似文献

Abstract

Populations of four species of thelastomatid nematode in six species of cockroach were regulated by a density- and sex-dependent mechanism. Regulation resulted in an underdispersed (regular) or random distribution of parasites. No cockroach contained more than one adult or juvenile male and rarely more than two adult females, and monogamy was common. Juvenile males were rare whereas juvenile females were relatively common, suggesting that males developed rapidly and were eliminated rapidly from hosts (leaving one). Prevalence of infection varied markedly between cockroach species.  相似文献

Day-night changes in rhabdom size of compound eyes were investigated in three groups of crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus): nymphs and adult males and females. In both adults and nymphs, the rhabdoms were larger at night than during a day. In adults, the mean rhabdom occupation ratios (RORs) of ommatidial retinulae at midnight were about two times greater than the values at midday. This change contributes to control of the photon capture efficiency (PCE) of the eye according to photic environment. The RORs of adult males at midnight were higher than those of both adult females and nymphs. This suggests that the PCE of the compound eye of adult males is the greatest of all groups. Under constant darkness, day-night changes in ROR were detected only in adult males, but neither in adult females nor in nymphs. On the other hand, no day-night changes were detected in any experimental group under constant light. These results suggest that the change in rhabdom size between day and night is an adaptation to the photic environment that is controlled mainly by the light-dark (day-night) cycle. However, the change in male adults is induced by an endogenous circadian clock.  相似文献

Summary Movements of milkweed beetles (Tetraopes tetraophthalmus and Tetraopes femoratus) were monitored using mark-release-recapture techniques to compare the within- and between-patch movement patterns of individuals in a naturally occurring population. Within-patch and between-patch movement patterns differ in both frequency and distance traveled for males and females of both study species. Males move farther than females and are more likely to move between patches. Individuals recognize and alter movement upon encountering patch edges. Results suggest that laboratory estimates of Tetraopes vagility give a misleading indication of actual dispersal.  相似文献

Topical and oral toxicity of sulfluramid (N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide) were determined for the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). The topical LD50 of sulfluramid was 175.6 micrograms/g for adult males, 117.8 micrograms/g for adult females, and 122.3 micrograms/g for gravid adult females. Ingestion increased toxicity approximately 1.4 times for adult male B. germanica. Twenty-four hours after topical treatment with 20 micrograms/insect sulfluramid, the percentage of female cockroaches that dropped their oothecae increased approximately 50% compared with controls treated with acetone. Sulfluramid also decreased oothecal hatch of both dropped and retained oothecae. Approximately 90% of oothecae from untreated females hatches, whereas less than 20% hatched from females treated with 20 micrograms/insect. Mean time for oothecal hatch increased linearly with increasing sulfluramid concentration. In arena studies in Ebeling choice boxes, LT50's ranged between approximately 2.3 and 3.9 d for a 0.331 mg/cm2 deposit and a 1.5% bait, respectively. Higher concentrations of sulfluramid were more repellent in both bait and residual formulations. Performance index values indicated excellent potential field efficacy. Field trials with 1.0 and 1.5% (AI) baits showed up to a 71.3% reduction in cockroach numbers. Baits controlled cockroaches throughout the 12-wk test.  相似文献

I examined sex differences in the ranging patterns of 3 female and 3 male wild spider monkeys. Each of the focal males used the home range widely, whereas each of the focal females used a distinct, restricted area of the home range. The males traveled longer distances than the females did. Although males were consistently in larger parties than females were, travel speed was affected by party composition rather than party size. All-male parties traveled faster than other party types did. Foraging manner also differed between sexes. Males spent more time feeding on fruits and less time on flowers and traveled longer distances between feeding trees. Both males and females used salados, where they ate soil and drank water. Salado location is likely to have affected the ranging pattern. Males used boundary areas more frequently than females did, often traveling along the boundary area in alliance with other males. Males also used areas that had been part of neighboring groups home ranges and were not used at all by females of the group. Greater travel distance of males is likely to be facilitated by consumption of a higher caloric diet. I compare the social structure of spider monkeys with that of chimpanzees, whose society is characterized by male-philopatry and female dispersion.  相似文献
