Male and female rats of the inbred August and Fischer strains were reared during two months after weaning either in a standard laboratory environment (controls) or in a more complex environment (treated animals). The performance of these rats was measured afterwards in an operant conditioning situation with positive reinforcement. The multiple reinforcement schedule used included CRF and extinction periods. The treated animals, regardless of their sex or strain, displayed a higher response rate than the controls in both the CRF and extinction periods. This difference, however, appears only after several conditioning sessions and does not seem to be linked with the level of locomotor activity as measured by photocell actographic recording. The implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Social contact during suckling, in an enriched social environment, can reduce the aggressive behaviours of piglets during regrouping at weaning, and improve their production performance and welfare. The aim of this study was to determine the possible impact of suckling social contact on gut microbes. We performed 16S rRNA sequencing to measure the faecal microbial structure and function in piglets experiencing social contact. Eighteen-litter piglets were allocated to two treatments: an early continuous social contact (CSC) group where piglets from adjacent pens shared a mutual pen starting at 14 days postpartum and a control (CON) group where piglets had no contact with individuals from adjacent pens during the suckling period. The piglets were regrouped at 36 days of age. The litter weights at 35 and 63 days of age were measured. Faecal samples were randomly collected at 16, 35, 42, and 63 days of age and faecal DNA was determined. The results showed that the litter weight of piglets in the CSC group was significantly decreased at 63 days compared with the CON group. Continuous social contact also significantly decreased the microbial richness at 16 and 35 days of age (P < 0.05). Firmicutes was the most abundant bacterial phylum in both groups at all detected time-points and the abundance increased with social contact. At the genus level, Lactobacillus was the most abundant bacterium after weaning and the abundance increased in the piglets with social contact. Compared with the faecal microbiota of control piglets, a total of 22 genera at 16 days, 20 genera at 35 days, 12 genera at 42 days, and 27 genera at 63 days in the faeces of CSC piglets were observed to be significantly different in abundance (linear discriminant analysis score > 3, P < 0.05). Furthermore, functional analysis of the microbial composition showed that the changes induced by early CSC mainly altered the relative abundance of metabolic and related pathways. The social contact notably had an effect on the abundance of microbial pathways for amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism. In conclusion, CSC changed the microbial composition in the faeces of piglets, which might have a negative effect on nutrient metabolism for the suckling-growing piglets. Our study provided new insight into the influence of social contact on the suckling-growing piglets.  相似文献

Neonatal piglets are often used in biomedical research applications that require artificial rearing. Social housing can be problematic because the piglets develop belly nosing, navel and ear sucking that can result in injury. Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of using feeding devices that provide various opportunities for sucking and nosing behaviour on reducing piglet-directed behaviour of group-housed laboratory piglets. Fifteen piglets were used in each of four trials. The piglets nursed their dam for approximately 72 h to obtain passive immunity before transfer to a laboratory facility where they were allotted, five per group, to one of three stainless steel isolator units. Each unit featured a different style of feeding system for the delivery of milk replacer: a plastic trough (T), a nipple (N) mounted on a smooth plexiglass wall, or a nipple mounted on a pliant bag of sterile water (artificial udder [AU]). Each system had five feeding spaces so that all piglets fed simultaneously. Milk was provided at 6-h intervals, and behaviour was recorded on alternate days for 12 days post-weaning. Although trough-fed piglets began to eat much sooner than those piglets fed from nipples, time spent nosing, chewing or sucking on pen-mates and belly nosing were markedly higher in T piglets than in either N or AU, overall (mean: P<0.05) and over time (quadratic: P<0.05). Over time, N piglets developed a stereotypic snout rubbing on the wall behind the nipples, while AU piglets massaged and often fell asleep in contact with the udder from day 2 of the trial. Resting patterns were also affected. N and AU piglets settled down to rest more quickly (P<0.01) and spent significantly more time resting in the hour following feeding than T piglets (P<0.05). A feeding device that accommodates both sucking and massage can significantly reduce piglet-directed behaviour and may facilitate social housing of artificially reared piglets.  相似文献

Alternatives to surgical castration are needed, due to stress and pain caused by castration of male pigs. One alternative is production of entire male pigs. However, changed behaviour of entire males compared with castrated males might adversely affect the welfare of entire males and changes in management procedures and production system might be needed. Elements from the organic pig production system might be beneficial in this aspect. The aim of this article is to investigate the effect of grouping strategy including social mixing and group size on levels of mounting behaviour and skin lesions, hypothesising that procedures that disrupt the social stability (e.g. regrouping) will have a larger negative effect in small groups compared with large groups. Approximately 1600 organic entire male pigs of the breed (Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc were reared in parallel in five organic herds, distributed across four batches in a 2×2 factorial design in order to test the influence of social mixing (presence or absence of social mixing at relocation) and group size (15 and 30 animals). Animals were able to socialise with piglets from other litters during the lactation period, and were all mixed across litters at weaning. A second mixing occurred at insertion to fattening pens for pigs being regrouped. Counting of skin lesions (1348 or 1124 pigs) and registration of mounting behaviour (1434 or 1258 pigs) were done on two occasions during the experimental period. No interactive effects were found between social mixing and group size on either skin lesions or mounting frequency. Herd differences were found for both mounting frequency and number of skin lesions. No association between skin lesions and mounting were revealed. Social mixing and group size were shown as interacting effects with herds on mounting frequency (P<0.0001), but with no consistent pattern across all herds. In addition, no effect of social mixing was found on mean number of skin lesions, but more lesions were observed in large groups (P<0.036). This could indicate that keeping entire male pigs in groups of 30 animals as compared with smaller groups of 15 may marginally decrease the welfare of these animals.  相似文献

In cattle, a gregarious species, the social group influences individual stress responses to fear-eliciting situations. As handling can be stressful for farm animals, it can be hypothesised that social partners modify individual responses to handling. The present experiment investigated the effect of the presence or absence of social partners on behavioural reactions of beef calves in a handling test. At the age of 10 months, 38 calves from two breeds (Salers and Limousine) were individually subjected to the docility test, once while in visual contact with four familiar peers, and once in the absence of peers, following a crossover design. The docility test procedure included physical separation from peers (30 s; period 1), exposition to a stationary human (30 s; period 2), and handling by human (30 s-2.5 min, according to the success in handling; period 3). In absence of human (period 1), calves in visual contact with their peers spent more time motionless than when peers were totally absent (P<0.001). The social environment also influenced the duration of handling (period 3); the human required more time to successfully handle calves when peers were present (P<0.05). In conclusion, the presence of peers affects individual calves' reactions to the docility test.  相似文献

Temporary crating may be a more acceptable housing system for lactating sows than permanent crating from an animal welfare point of view. It remains unclear whether opening the crate leads to changes in sow lying down behaviour and piglet activity that may pose an increased risk of injury to piglets. This study aimed to assess whether the lying down behaviour of lactating sows housed in temporary crating changed shortly after removal of confinement, whether it was influenced by piglets' behaviour and age and whether sows preferentially used some support during lying down after crate opening. Sows (n = 13) were crated from 5 days pre partum to 3 days post partum. Their behaviours were recorded on video over a 24-h period both preceding and following crate opening, as well as over a 24-h period on day 25. The following behaviours were analysed: position and activity of the piglets when the sow lie down, duration of the lying down events, use of pen walls or crate bars as support when lying down; and position of the sow in the pen when lying down. Piglet mortality was assessed every day. Data were analysed in SAS using GLM. The duration of lying down events did not differ between the 24-h periods before and after opening the crate but increased on day 25 (P < 0.01). Similarly, the percentage of piglets in the danger zone did not differ between the 24-h periods before and after opening the crate, but increased on day 25 (P < 0.0001). The percentage of piglets in the creep area increased temporarily the day after the crate opening (P < 0.0001). Sows frequently utilised support when lying down, but less over the 24-h period after the crate opening compared to the two other periods (P < 0.001). A higher percentage of piglets in the creep area resulted in longer lying down events where the sow's snout was in contact with piglets located in the creep area (P < 0.05). The present study shows that opening the crate does have an immediate impact on lying down behaviour and piglet behaviour, but it does not pose an increased risk to piglets. Our results also indicate that piglet behaviour changed with age and influenced sow lying down behaviour. Finally, our findings further suggest that some available lying down support may be a very important feature of the pen during the whole lactation period.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the influence of social isolation during infancy on learning behavior in rats. Rats, reared isolated (n = 55) or paired (n = 60) for a period of 50 days following weaning, were tested on different learning tasks in an operant conditioning chamber. Isolation rearing produced significantly better learning when the training period directly followed the different housing conditions. After a 28 day period of social isolation for the subjects raised paired during infancy no differences in learning between isolated and paired reared animals could be observed. The differences are discussed in relation to the effects of stimulus deprivation.  相似文献

In this study we tested if contact possibilities between non-littermate piglets and complexity of farrowing conditions affect the pre- and post-weaning behaviour, weight gain and skin lesions of piglets. Suckling sows were either kept in a group housing system (GH), in a single pen loose housing system (LH), or in conventional farrowing crates (FC). In the single pen systems a piglet door to the adjacent pen was opened on d 10 after farrowing in half of the pens so that piglets were able to enter the neighbouring pen (LH+ and FC+). For control, in the other half of single pens no piglet doors were opened (LH− and FC−). In the group housing system piglets also were allowed to freely move within the whole system on d 10 after farrowing. After weaning on d 28 piglets were kept in littered rearing pens in an open stable holding 20 piglets each. Piglets from contact pens were mixed with those they previously had contact to whereas piglets from control pens were mixed with unfamiliar litters. Data were obtained from 230 litters (113 sows with 1935 farrowed piglets). All piglets were scored for skin lesions immediately before and 4 days after opening the piglet doors, as well as immediately before and 4 days after moving into rearing pens. Behaviour (biting, fighting, drinking and laying) of piglets was recorded in the rearing pens in a 48-h period after weaning for 2 × 4 h. Treatments did not affect the level of skin lesions in the rearing period (H = 8.72, df 4, ns) nor daily weight gain until weaning (F4,216 = 1.21, ns). In the 48 h after moving to rearing pens, less intensive agonistic behaviour (fighting and biting) was observed in contact piglets (H = 53.36, df 4, P < 0.0001). Four days after weaning control piglets showed significantly higher numbers and more severe skin lesions than contact piglets and, in addition, lesion scores of piglets from the larger single farrowing pens with straw bedding were significantly lower compared to the single farrowing crate (H = 33.86, df 4, P < 0.0001). The latency for lying in the new rearing pen was decreasing (F4,93 = 25.76, P < 0.001) and the latency for drinking (F4,81 = 3.43, P = 0.01) was increasing with decreasing complexity and space allotment of the housing system but were not related to whether the piglets have had contact to other litters before weaning. Five weeks after weaning weight gain (F4,204 = 7.01, P < 0.0001) and BW (F4,207 = 5.34, P < 0.001) were higher in treatments offering contact. Our results show that familiarising piglets from different litters 10 day post partum by establishing contact possibilities through a piglet door reduces social stress at weaning and increases weight gain after weaning. Farrowing pens with straw bedding and enlarged space as offered in the farrowing pens and the group housing system can further decrease the level of harmful agonistic interactions after mixing unacquainted litters at weaning and can improve the adaptation of piglets towards the new environment of the rearing pen.  相似文献

The maternal behaviour of domestic sows in intensive husbandry has been studied in relation to their social rank during the second half of pregnancy when they were kept in groups. The sows dominant during pregnancy were more active immediately before farrowing but not after it. The low-ranking sows showed much more restlessness from the early days after farrowing and many stereotyped/redirected patterns. Those sows voluntarily interrupted nursing in the early days of lactation more often, while the dominant sows were more likely to allow piglets to suckle freely.  相似文献

In marmosets, social synchrony between circadian profiles of activity is stronger in animals that cohabit in a family. The activity of three breeding pairs was recorded by actiwatches to investigate the mechanisms involved in the synchrony between the circadian activity profiles during cohabitation in marmoset reproductive pairs. The dyads were submitted to LD 12:12 (21 days) and LL: 1) cohabitation (24 days), 2) removal of the cage mate (20 days), 3) reintroduction of the mate into the cage of the 1st situation (30 days) and 4) removal of the cage mate (7 days). Next, they were rejoined and maintained in LD 12:12 (11 days). In conditions involving cohabitation of pair, the general and maximum correlation indexes between circadian profiles were higher in cage mates compared to animals of the same or different sex with which they maintain only acoustic and olfactive contact. This strong synchrony between rhythms was accompanied by a stable phase relationship at the activity onset and offset, with identical circadian periods between mates. When the pairs were separated, there was a break in stability in the phase relationships between activity profiles with different circadian periods and a greater phase angle difference between rhythms of cage mates. During separation, two females and one male progressively anticipated the activity onset and offset in a phase similar to that in previous conditions, expressing entrainment to the mate. During the first reintroduction, two pairs exhibited signs of masking in rhythm. Although modulation in the rhythm of some animals has been observed through acoustic cues from animals outside the colony, we suggest that cohabitation favors strong synchrony between the circadian activity profiles of marmoset reproductive pairs involving synchronization by entrainment and masking. Further studies in the absence of external social cues are necessary to clarify the role of these mechanisms on social synchronization in marmosets.  相似文献

The periods of development individual behavior in beluga calves are described. During these periods, calves form locomotor skills and interrelations with other individuals, and this determines the overall social structure of a pod. The formation of behavior in White Sea beluga calves passes through a number of stages. New types of social interactions arose in the following sequence: the imprinting period, the first abandoning of the mother without contact with other members of the pod and accumulation of new locomotive elements, first contacts with other young-of-the-year calves, and the complication of interaction types through game activities. Calves usually formed pairs with coevals or elder calves that possessed a richer locomotor repertoire. New motions appeared as a result of imitation of adult animals. These periods do not have distinct terms and depend on the individual qualities of the calves. Some changes in the belugas’ behavior were seen under the conditions of the active development of managed ecotourism in the area around Solovetsky Island, the animals showed adaptation to the presence of man.  相似文献

Periods of isolation during which animals have no social contact are common in the design of behavioral experiments. They are used, for example, to test memory and recognition responses, or to ensure a baseline condition before experimental manipulations commence. We investigated the effect of isolation periods on the aggressive behavior of matched pairs of the crayfish Cherax destructor in two contexts. The first experiment tested the effects of a period of isolation between two encounters. The second experiment tested the effects of isolation before an encounter by pairing one crayfish from a communal living environment with another crayfish from an isolated one. Fight outcome and aggression levels were analyzed, resulting in three conclusions about the social biology of C. destructor. First, encounters between familiar opponents are influenced by the outcome of the familiarization fight for about 2 weeks. Second, the level of aggression and the outcome of an encounter are affected over different time frames. Third, individuals that are isolated before an encounter can be disadvantaged. These data suggest that isolation, or events that occur during periods of isolation, affect multiple elements of social behavior in C. destructor. This suggestion has implications for the interpretation of previous results and future studies in crustaceans and other taxa.  相似文献

Effects of feeding cycles on circadian rhythms in squirrel monkeys   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were housed singly in cages equipped with a tree for climbing to measure locomotor activity, and with a movable food cup that could be arrested automatically. The animals were kept in continuous dim illumination (LL), twice interrupted by several weeks of entrainment by a light-dark (LD) 12:12 cycle. Apart from three control sections in which the food cups were unlocked continuously (ad libitum feeding), food was accessible for 3 hr per day only, with interfeeding intervals varying from 23 to 26 hr (periodic restricted feeding, or RF). During LD entrainment, the imposition of an RF schedule resulted in anticipatory behaviors, represented by increased tugs at the food cup and a pause in locomotor activity preceding the feeding time. In LL, the animals showed free-running circadian rhythms of locomotor and "feeding" activity that nearly always persisted when ad libitum feeding was replaced by RF. The period (tau) of the free-running rhythm was slightly modulated in relation to the varying interfeeding intervals (T), but entrainment was never achieved except in one test with an animal whose tau was very close to T. It is concluded that periodic availability of food represents an extremely weak zeitgeber, if any, for the circadian pacemaker of squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

Plant secondary metabolites (PSM) are one of the promising options to control gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep and goats. The objective of this study was to assess the abilities of sheep and goats to self-medicate with tannin-rich sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) (SF) when infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, using a cafeteria and an operant conditioning trial. Hypotheses were that parasitized (P) lambs and goat kids would show greater intake and preference for SF than their non-parasitized (NP) counterparts, that kids would eat more SF than lambs (due to their lower resistance against parasites and their greater ability to consume PSM), and that SF intake would increase over time for P animals. We used 20 female kids and 20 ewe lambs aged 3 months. Half of the animals per species (n = 10) were experimentally infected with 170 L3 larvae of Haemonchus contortus/kg of BW (P). The other half were free from parasites throughout the study (NP). Five weeks after infection, animals were exposed to a 24-day cafeteria trial (three 8-day periods) offering a free choice between two legume pellets: SF (3.8% condensed tannins) and alfalfa (ALF, Medicago sativa; no tannin). Subsequently, animals were involved in an operant conditioning trial of two 4-day long sessions, to assess in short-term tests their motivation to walk for a SF reward when offered in choice with freely available ALF. In the cafeteria trial, SF preference was greater in kids than in lambs, particularly in the first two periods. We did not observe a greater preference for SF in P animals, which was even greater in NP animals for periods 1 and 2. Sainfoin intake increased through periods for P animals, which led to similar SF preferences for all groups during period 3. In the operant-conditioning trial, motivation to get the SF reward was similar between P and NP animals. These results support the hypotheses that goats are more willing to consume tanniferous feeds than sheep, and that P animals increased SF intake through time. However, the emergence of a curative self-medicative behaviour was not supported, as P individuals did not show greater SF intake, preference, nor a greater motivation to get SF than NP animals, regardless of animal species. These findings are discussed with previous results and some explanations are presented.  相似文献

Cognitive problems frequently accompany neurological manifestations of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, during screening of preclinical candidates, assessments of behaviour in mouse models of MS typically focus on locomotor activity. In the present study, we analysed cognitive behaviour of 9 to 10-week-old female C57Bl/6J mice orally administered with the toxin cuprizone that induces demyelination, a characteristic feature of MS. Animals received 400 mg/kg cuprizone daily for 2 or 4 weeks, and their performance was compared with that of vehicle-treated mice. Cuprizone-treated animals showed multiple deficits in short touchscreen-based operant tasks: they responded more slowly to visual stimuli, rewards and made more errors in a simple rule-learning task. In contextual/cued fear conditioning experiments, cuprizone-treated mice showed significantly lower levels of contextual freezing than vehicle-treated mice. Diffusion tensor imaging showed treatment-dependent changes in fractional anisotropy as well as in axial and mean diffusivities in different white matter areas. Lower values of fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity in cuprizone-treated mice indicated developing demyelination and/or axonal damage. Several diffusion tensor imaging measurements correlated with learning parameters. Our results show that translational touchscreen operant tests and fear conditioning paradigms can reliably detect cognitive consequences of cuprizone treatment. The suggested experimental approach enables screening novel MS drug candidates in longitudinal experiments for their ability to improve pathological changes in brain structure and reverse cognitive deficits.  相似文献

The preferences of sheep or calves for light or darkness have been examined by placing animals in light-proof chambers in which they could turn the lights on or off by interrupting an infrared beam switch with their muzzles. Sheep spent an average of 77% of each 24 h period in light while the calves spent an average of 67% of each 24 h in light. The experiments show that sheep and calves prefer light to darkness. The strength of their motivation for light was examined by means of an operant task in which they were rewarded with only 40 s of light for each interruption of the i.r. beam. Sheep then obtained an average of 1.5 h of light per 24 h and calves 1.0 per 24 h. Finally, the animals were subjected to a situation in which the light only remained on for as long as the i.r. beam was interrupted. In this experiment sheep obtained 4.8 min of light per 24 h and calves 3.2 min per 24 h. Quantitative operant methods can provide an objective means for measuring environmental preferences in farm animals.  相似文献

Due to their aggressive nature, male mice are less frequently used than female mice in biomedical research. When aggressive males are being used, individual housing is common practice. The question arises whether this is an acceptable housing for a social species. The present study was designed to gain more insight into the nature of inter-male social contact and into the potential of a form of environmental enrichment (nesting material) to compensate for the lack of social contact. In a series of tests, we analysed whether male mice of different ages preferred to spend time (1) near a familiar cage mate versus an empty cage, or (2) near to a familiar cage mate versus direct contact with nesting material (tissues). Dwelling time in each of the test cages and sleeping sites was recorded, as was the behaviour of the test mice. Results indicated that when other conditions were similar, male mice preferred to sleep in close proximity to their familiar cage mate. Furthermore, the need to engage in active social behaviour increased with age. Tissues were used to a large extent for sleeping and sleep-related behaviour. It is concluded that single housing in order to avoid aggression between male mice is a solution with evident negative consequences for the animals. When individual housing is inevitable due to excessive aggressive behaviour, the presence of nesting material could partly compensate for the deprivation of social contact.  相似文献

A study concerning an operant conditioning of albino rats over a period of 6 months showed that different subjects progressively adopted a highly stable behaviour which could be called a ‘strategy’. Each one of these ‘strategies’ enables the subject to obtain, in a defined manner, a certain number of reinforcements within a given period; despite their different efficiencies, each one of these ‘strategies’ can be considered as ‘correct’. We have shown here that the duration of the conditioning session and the mean yield per stimulus depend on the choice of a given ‘strategy’.  相似文献

It is known that tactile stimulation (TS) during ontogeny modifies brain plasticity and enhances the motor and cognitive skills. Our hypothesis was that early handling including TS would increase play and exploratory behaviour in commercial pigs under standardized test conditions. Piglets from 13 litters were subjected to three handling treatments from 5 to 35 days of age: all the piglets were handled (H), none of the piglets were handled (NH) or half of the piglets in the litter were handled (50/50). At 42 days of age, the pigs’ behaviour was observed in pairs in a novel pen with a ‘toy’ (tug rope). The main results were that more locomotor play was performed by pigs from litters where all or half of them had been handled, whereas social exploratory behaviour was more pronounced in pigs from litters where half of them had been handled. Although behaviour was affected by the interaction of treatment with sex or with weight category, we propose that the handling procedure does seem to have acted to increase locomotor skills and that handling half of the piglets in the litter may have triggered a series of socio-emotional interactions that were beneficial for the whole group.  相似文献
