Foliar application of Phosfon D at 50–100 ppm stimulates the growth of Salvia officinalis (sage) and moderately retards the growth of Mentha piperita (peppermint), while increasing the essential oil yield of both species by 50–70 % Phosfon D increases the proportions of (−)-3-isothujone and (+)-3-thujone in sage oil and decreases the level of (−)-β-pinene and (+)-camphor, whereas this growth retardant increases the proportions of (+)-isomenthone and (+)-neoisomenthol in peppermint oil and decreases the level of(−)-menthone and (−)-menthoL Foliar application of Cycocel at 250–500 ppm slightly stimulates growth and essential oil formation in peppermint, and retards growth of sage with little effect on oil yield. The influence of Cycocel on sage oil composition was the opposite of that of Phosfon, with a tendency to increase the level of (−)-β-pinene and decrease the level of (−)-3-isothujone under severe stunting. The effect of Cycocel on the composition of peppermint varied with concentration. The influence of growth retardants on essential oil composition and yield are most readily explained by alterations in the levels or activities of the relevant enzymes.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the essential oils from Mentha piperita L., Mentha crispa L., Origanum vulgare L., Dracocephalum moldavica L., and Hyssopus officinalis L. cultivated under the conditions of the Western Siberia Region was studied using the chromatography-mass spectrometry approach. The results on the composition of the cultivated O. vulgare, D. moldavica, and H. officinalis are comparable with the data for wild plants, and for M. piperita and M. crispa, with the plants grown in the Southern regions of Russia. The data on the chemical composition of the essence oil, or attar, from M. crispa (Inna breed) were obtained for the first time, and the data for H. officinalis were substantially extended.  相似文献

Foliar application of a wide range of herbicides provided suggestive evidence for a direct correlation between growth and essential oil production in sage (Salvia officinalis) grown under controlled environmental conditions. Conversely, foliar application of the growth regulators AMO-1618 and DCPA indicated that moderate stunting of growth was associated with an increase in essential oil yield. Quantitative changes in the principle monoterpenes of sage oil, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, 3-isothujone and camphor, were also observed in response to the various treatments. However, attempts to correlate the changes in oil composition with alteration in growth or oil yield also failed to establish any definitive relationships. Since the four monoterpene components examined arise by independent routes from a common precursor, the changes in oil composition observed indicate that the applied bioregulators exert a direct effect on terpene metabolism by a means independent of growth or development.  相似文献

Foliar application of Daminozide at 1000 ppm reduces the growth of Salvia officinalis (sage) and decreases essential oil yield, but increases both growth and essential oil yield of Mentha piperita at the same concentration. Ethephon at 250 ppm reduces the growth and essential oil yield of peppermint and slightly increases growth and essential oil content of sage. Both growth regulators markedly reduce the level of menthone and menthol in peppermint oil and increase the level of isomenthone and neoisomenthol. Both growth regulators decrease the level of camphor and increase the level of β-pinene in sage oil. Changes in essential oil composition induced by these growth regulators are most readily explained by alterations in the levels or activities of the relevant biosynthetic enzymes.

Salicylic acid (SA) may reduce the negative impact of water deficit on growth and metabolite yield of Thymus daenensis Celak subsp. daenensis Celak. The effect of foliar application of SA and reduced irrigation on growth, oil yield, chemical components, and antibacterial and antioxidant activities of T. daenensis in field condition were investigated. Treatments comprised 0.0, 1.5 and 3.0 M SA applied to plants under normal irrigation and stressed conditions. Results indicated that irrigation regime had a significant effect on growing degree days (GDD) required to reach early and full flowering. Foliar application of SA influenced GDD from early growing stage to 50 % and full flowering, minimum radius and canopy diameter. The highest values of oil content (3.2 % v/w) and yield (14.9 g m?2) were obtained from application of 3.0 M SA. Percentage of some chemical constituents in the essential oil extracted from the plants under stress was higher than non-stressed plants. Thymol content was significantly reduced under stressed conditions. Foliar application of SA significantly improved carvacrol, α-thujene, α-pinene and p-cymene contents in the oils, but reduced thymol and, β-caryophyllene amounts. Our results showed that foliar application of SA reduced the negative effect of water deficit on thymol content in the essential oil of T. daenensis. The essential oils of T. daenensis exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities when plants were sprayed with 1.5 and 3.0 M SA, respectively.  相似文献

Rosmarinus officinalis is a dominant shrub species of calcareous Mediterranean communities that has increased its presence in wide areas due to fire frequency increase and field abandonment. We aimed to study the capacity of adult shrubs to respond to nutrient pulses such as those produced by fires and human driven eutrophycation. In a 5 years old post-fire Mediterranean shrubland we conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of irrigation and N and P fertilisation on the growth, nutrient status and flowering effort of adult plants of the dominant shrub R. officinalis in a post-fire shrubland. The responses were monitored during the immediate 3 years after fertilisation. P fertilisation increased plant growth, produced a great increase in P aerial mineralomass and P concentration in leaf and stems and had a slight positive effect on flowering effort. Irrigation increased plant growth, but did not have significant effects on nutrient contents and flowering. The results show that adult individuals of the Mediterranean shrub R. officinalis have a notable capacity to positively respond in growth and in nutritional status to a sudden increase of the limiting nutrient, in this case P, and in a lesser extent, to an increase of water supply. These capacities may be important under the more unpredictable nutrient and water availability conditions expected for the near future; they will allow to take advantage of the pulses of higher nutrient and water availability in the middle of dry periods, thus increasing the community capacity to improve the nutrient retention in the ecosystem.  相似文献

Global climate change and increased population caused significant depletion of freshwater especially in arid and semi-arid regions including Saudi Arabia. Saline water magnetization before irrigation may help in alleviating the adverse effects of salinity on plants. The current study aimed to examine the potential beneficial effects of water magnetization and soil amendments on growth, productivity, and survival of Calendula officinalis L. plants. Three types of water (tap water “control”, well water, and magnetized well water) and two types of soil amendments (Fe2SO4 and peat moss) were examined. Our results showed that irrigating C. officinalis plants with saline well water (WW) adversely affected growth and flowering as compared to tap water (TW). However, plants irrigated with magnetized water (MW) showed significant enhancement in all the studied vegetative and flowering growth parameters as compared to those irrigated with WW. Furthermore, mineral contents and survival of C. officinalis plants irrigated with MW were higher than those irrigated with TW. Irrigation with MW significantly reduced levels of NA+ and Cl ions in leaves of C. officinalis plants indicating the role of magnetization in alleviating harmful effects of salinity. The current study showed that water magnetization enhanced water quality and increased plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. Further studies are needed to examine the possibility of irrigating food crops with magnetized water.  相似文献

In our study, one-month-old Melissa officinalis plants were subjected to Fe-deficiency treatments, such as 10 µM Fe (as direct iron deficiency, DD), and 30 µM Fe + 10 mM NaHCO3 + 0.5 g l?1 CaCO3 (as indirect iron deficiency, ID), and 30 µM Fe (as control) for 14 d. Both Fe-deficiency types reduced plant growth, photosynthetic pigment contents, an active Fe content in roots and leaves, root Fe(III)-reducing capacity, Fe-use efficiency, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, a ratio of variable to basic fluorescence, and activities of antioxidant enzymes, while they increased lipid peroxidation and a H2O2 content in leaves. These effects were more pronounced in plants exposed to ID with bicarbonate than those of DD plants. We showed that sodium nitroprusside (SNP), as NO donor, could ameliorate the adverse effects of bicarbonate on above traits. The methylene blue, as NO blocker, reversed the protective effects conferred by SNP in the ID-treated plants as well as DD plants. These findings suggests that NO protects photosynthesis and growth of IDtreated plants as well as DD plants by contribution in availability and/or delivery of metabolically active iron or by changing activities of reactive oxygen species-scavenging enzymes.  相似文献

The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus deserticola (Trappe and John) on plant growth, nutrition, flower yield, water relations, chlorophyll (Chl) contents and water-use efficiency (WUE) of snapdragon (Antirhinum majus cv. butterfly) plants were studied in potted culture under well-watered (WW) and water-stress (WS) conditions. The imposed water stress condition significantly reduced all growth parameters, nutrient contents, flower yield, water relations, and Chl pigment content and increased the electrolyte leakage of the plants comparing to those of nonstressed plants. Regardless of the WS level, the mycorrhizal snapdragon plants had significantly higher shoot and root dry mass (DM), WUE, flower yield, nutrient (P, N, K, Mg, and Ca) and Chl contents than those nonmycorrhizal plants grown both under WW or WS conditions. Under WS conditions, the AM colonization had greatly improved the leaf water potential (??w), leaf relative water content (RWC) and reduced the leaf electrolyte leakage (EL) of the plants. Although the WS conditions had markedly increased the proline content of the leaves, this increase was significantly higher in nonmycorrhizal than in mycorrhizal plants. This suggests that AM colonization enhances the host plant WS tolerance. Values of benefit and potential dry matter for AM-root associations were highest when plants were stressed and reduced under WW conditions. As a result, the snapdragon plants showed a high degree of dependency on AM fungi which improve plant growth, flower yield, water relations particularly under WS conditions, and these improvements were increased as WS level had increased. This study confirms that AM colonization can mitigate the deleterious effect of water stress on growth and flower yield of the snapdragon ornamental plant.  相似文献

Melatonin  has been identified as a signal molecule that regulates plant responses to different abiotic and biotic stresses. Melatonin (MT) and its precursor tryptophan (Try) have a major role in improving plant stress tolerance to different environmental stresses such as water deficiency. The rapid increase in the Egyptian population caused insufficient protein sources, especially those of animal origin, in their diet. The possible solution is to augment the diet with legumes such as white lupine which are relatively rich in protein. Thus, the current experimental work was carried out to find changes in growth, biochemical aspects and yield quantity and quality of white lupine plant with spraying of both MT and Try at different concentrations on plant shoot under water deficit stress conditions. Results showed that water deficit (75 or 50% of water irrigation requirements; WIR) caused significant reduction in growth, photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid and yield compared with those received 100% WIR. Seed yield significantly decreased (p < 0.05) by 26.98 and 41.64% by decreasing WIR to 75 and 50%. The decrease was accompanied by significant increase in phenolic contents, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation and some antioxidant enzymes, while nitrate reductase enzyme was decreased. However, external application of either MT or Try significantly alleviated the adverse effects of water deficit (growth suppression), since MT or Try-treated plants recovered more quickly than untreated plants. Moreover, MT or Try—treated plants had higher photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid, phenolic, as well as yield quantity and quality under the three WIR as compared with untreated plants. Melatonin treatment at 100 µM and Tryptophan at 200 µM increased weight of seeds/plant by 78.29 and 52.19%, 71.49 and 43.78% and 41.21 and 13.07% in plants irrigated with 100, 75 and 50% WIR, respectively. Exogenous MT and Try significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content, while markedly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and nitrate reductase under different WIR. Finally, the current study concluded that MT and Try treatments alleviated the detrimental effects of water deficiency and accelerated the recovery mainly via improving white lupine plants tolerance in forms of enhancing photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid, phenolic and antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

Background and aims

Salt stress is an increasing problem in agricultural soils in many parts of the world, and salt tolerant cropping systems are in great demand. We investigated the effect of co-inoculation of Galega officinalis with Rhizobium galegae and two plant growth promoting Pseudomonas species on plant growth, nodulation, and N content under salt stress.

Methods

The effect of inoculation with R. galegae sv. officinalis HAMBI 1141 alone and in combination with the root-colonizing Pseudomonas extremorientalis TSAU20 or Pseudomonas trivialis 3Re27 on the growth of G. officinalis exposed to salt stress (50 and 75 mM NaCl) was studied under gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions.

Results

The growth of goat’s rue was reduced at 50 and 75 mM NaCl both in the gnotobiotic sand system and in low-fertilized potting soil in the greenhouse. Co-inoculation of unstressed and salt-stressed goat’s rue with R. galegae HAMBI 1141 and either P. extremorientalis TSAU20 or P. trivialis 3Re27 significantly improved root and shoot growth and increased nodulation of plant roots in both growth systems compared with plants inoculated with R. galegae alone. The nitrogen content of co-inoculated plant roots was significantly increased at 75 mM NaCl in potting soil. Co-inoculation of G. officinalis with either of the two plant growth promoting (PGPR) Pseudomonas strains also improved root tip-colonization by R. galegae cells.

Conclusions

The co-inoculation of goat’s rue with Rhizobium and PGPR Pseudomonas strains alleviated salt stress of plants grown in NaCl-amended gnotobiotic sand systems and in potting soil in the greenhouse.  相似文献

The effect of organic (poultry and cattle manures) and biological (effective microorganisms, EM) fertilizers on growth, essential oil yield and its compositions, endogenous phytohormones content and antibacterial activity of peppermint plants grown in pot over 12 weeks was studied. Application of organo- and bio-fertilizers greatly affected on growth, essential oil production and other estimated parameters of peppermint plants. Slight stimulation effect was happened due to soil application of organic manures. Soil application of EM alone or in combination with organic fertilizers significantly increased growth, yield and components of essential oils, endogenous hormones of peppermint as compared to other treatments. Using disc diffusion method, the extracted oil of peppermint plants amended with organic and biofertilizers recorded the highest antibacterial activity against tested pathogenic bacteria like Klebsiella pneuumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.  相似文献

Effect of penconazole (PEN) on the expression level of two genes in the biosynthesis pathway of monoterpenes, isopiperitenone reductase (iPR) and pulegone reductase (PR), and essential oil (EO) compounds were studied at flowering stage of Mentha pulegium L. under drought stress. Plants were grown with different levels of field capacity (100 and 50 %) with or without PEN (15 mg l?1). Results showed that drought stress decreased the growth and productivity parameters. PEN treatment to drought-stressed plants decreased the negative effects of drought stress on these parameters. The EO yield increased by about 1.6 times under drought stress, and the highest amount of EO was obtained in drought-stressed with PEN. Drought stress increased pulegone and decreased menthone percentage, and the highest pulegone percentage (78.2 % of total constituents) was obtained in drought-stressed with PEN treatment. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed drought stress increased the expression level of iPR and PR genes. PEN treatment promoted the impact of drought stress on iPR gene expression and repressed PR gene expression. Our results suggest that PEN may be a useful tool for the regulation of monoterpene metabolism in M. pulegium under stress condition.  相似文献

Abstract

Salicylic acid (SA) treatment reduces the damaging action by water deficit on growth and accelerates a restoration of growth processes. The aim of the present work was to study the physiological and biochemical alteration induced by SA in lemongrass plants under stress conditions. Therefore, a pot culture experiment was conducted to test whether SA application at concentration of (10?5 M) through foliar spray could protect lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus Steud. Wats.) varieties (Neema and Krishna), subjected to drought stress on the basis of growth parameters and biochemical constituents, proline metabolism and quality attributes including citral content. The treatments were as follows: (i) 100% FC + 0 SA; (ii) 75% FC + 0 SA; (iii) 50% FC + 0 SA; (iv) 75% FC + 10?5 M SA; and (v) 50% FC + 10?5 M SA. The growth parameters were significantly reduced under the applied water stress levels; however, foliar application of salicylic acid (10?5 M) improved the growth parameters in stress-affected plants. The plants under water stress exhibited a significant increase in activities of nitrate reductase and carbonic anhydrase, and electrolyte leakage, proline content, free amino acid and in PEP carboxylase activity. Content and yield of essential oil also significantly decreased in plants that faced water stress. Thus, it was concluded that variety Neema is the more tolerant variety as compared to Krishna on the basis of content and oil yield and well adapted to drought stress conditions.  相似文献

Application of Microcoleus vaginatus, a blue-green alga (Cyanobacterium) at different levels along with Meloidogyne incognita, second stage larvae, in the rhizosphere of tomato plants; showed that the plant growth as well as yield of tomato were increased and gall formations and nematode populations decreased with the increase in inoculum level of M. vaginatus. An inoculum level of 20 ml endospores suspension of M. vaginatus (2.4 × 106 endospores per ml) per plant was optimum to reduce nematode attack with a population density of 1000 larvae per kg soil. Plant growth and yield of fruits were greatly suppressed and gall formations on roots, and nematode populations in soil were increased when M. incognita larvae added five days prior to M. vaginatus inoculation. On the other hand, when M. vaginatus inoculated ten days before nematode inoculation, suppressive effect of M. incognta on plants was reduced and their population density as well as gall formations were also decreased significantly. The efficacy of simultaneous inoculation of both nematode and M. vaginatus was lied in between two treatments discussed above.  相似文献

To evaluate the dose-response effects of endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on Medicago plant growth and dry weight production, we increased the synthesis of IAA in both free-living and symbiosis-stage rhizobial bacteroids during Rhizobium-legume symbiosis. For this purpose, site-directed mutagenesis was applied to modify an 85-bp promoter sequence, driving the expression of iaaM and tms2 genes for IAA biosynthesis. A positive correlation was found between the higher expression of IAA biosynthetic genes in free-living bacteria and the increased production of IAA under both free-living and symbiotic conditions. Plants nodulated by RD65 and RD66 strains, synthetizing the highest IAA concentration, showed a significant (up to 73%) increase in the shoot fresh weight and upregulation of nitrogenase gene, nifH, compared to plants nodulated by the wild-type strain. When these plants were analyzed by confocal microscopy, using an anti-IAA antibody, the strongest signal was observed in bacteroids of Medicago sativa RD66 (Ms-RD66) plants, even when they were located in the senescent nodule zone. We show here a simple system to modulate endogenous IAA biosynthesis in bacteria nodulating legumes suitable to investigate which is the maximum level of IAA biosynthesis, resulting in the maximal increase of plant growth.  相似文献

The present greenhouse study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of co-inoculating methylotrophic Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20 along with nitrogen-fixing Azospirillum brasilense CW903 or a phosphate solubilizing bacterium Burkholderia pyrrocinia CBPB-HOD on the growth and nutrient uptake of tomato, red pepper and rice. Seed inoculation and soil/foliar application of the bacterial strains alone or under dual inoculation increased the plant growth in terms of shoot or root length and increased the nutrient uptake in the plants studied compared to uninoculated control plants. Co-inoculation of M. oryzae CBMB20 with A. brasilense CW903 or B. pyrrocinia CBPB-HOD improved the N and P concentration of plants, while the results varied among the plant species tested. Also, co-inoculation of the bacterial strains increased the activity of nitrogenase, urease and phosphatase enzymes in soil when compared to uninoculated control or individual inoculations. Though the inoculation effects were analyzed at an early stage of plant growth, the results conclusively suggest that M. oryzae being compatible with other microorganisms in the rhizosphere can potentially be used as individual inoculant or co-inoculated with other plant growth promoting bacteria to increase the production in sustainable agricultural systems.  相似文献

Responses of Cymbopogon martinii and C. winterianus to drought stress and chlormequat chloride and IAA application are compared. These two species are important source of essential oil production in drought regions. For both species and their cultivars relative water content (RWC), herbage yield and oil amount decreased under drought, while oil biosynthesis increased. Oil concentration increased significantly under drought in C. winterianus while peroxidase activity increased in C. martinii. Amount of geraniol increased under drought stress in C. martinii while citronellal and geraniol accumulation decreased in C. winterianus. Ameliorative effects of chlormequat chloride and IAA were observed in drought stressed plants of both species. Herbage yield increased significantly in chlormequat chloride and IAA treated stressed plants of C. winterianus, while oil concentration increased in C. martinii. Ameliorative effect of IAA in increasing oil yield was significant in drought stressed plants of both the species. Changes in various morpho-physiological traits indicated that chlormequat chloride and IAA can partially alleviate the detrimental effect of drought in these aromatic grasses.  相似文献
