Potentially some of the biggest gaps in our knowledge about the ecology of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) relate to juvenile animals. We investigated the at-sea distribution of five male and five female fur seal pups post-weaning.
The study was carried out at Bird Island, South Georgia during two successive winters using satellite-linked platform transmitter
terminals (PTTs). Our results are analysed in relation to pup sex and the physical environment and productivity of those 2 years,
as well as in the context of our present knowledge of where post-breeding females and males forage. The available physical
and biological data during both of the winters of this study suggest that both years were not unusual. We report marked differences
between the sexes with male pups foraging significantly further away from land and their birth site than do females. The pups
foraged in areas to the East of Bird Island seldom reported as foraging areas for the adult population. Also as winter progressed
they showed a more oceanic distribution leaving the continental shelf, possibly to exploit a different prey source that was
more readily available in the upper water column. 相似文献

Large numbers of pups of the Antarctic fur seal were weighed at regular intervals through their rearing period in six seasons between 1972 and 1981 at South Georgia. Growth rates and birth and weaning weights were estimated from linear regressions of mean weight on mean age. Female pups had significantly lower growth rates and weaning weights than males, but higher variances for all growth parameters. This may reflect the importance to males of polygynous species of attaining high body weight. Except for an inverse relation between growth rate and birth weight there were no systematic relationships between growth parameters. Seasonal differences in growth rates were substantial and there was no indication that the continuing rapid population increase was affecting pup growth rates. The use of these data in detecting seasonal variations in local food availability is discussed. Preliminary estimates of the energy costs of pup rearing indicate that pup existence metabolism consumes c. 80% and mass gain to weaning only c. 15% of the energy provided by the female. 相似文献

Summary Relationships between size, body condition, age and feeding-attendance patterns during pup rearing of female Antacrtic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and their effects on the timing of birth and weaning, pup weight, growth and condition were studied at South Georgia in 1981–1982. Twenty-seven (6 male, 21 female) mother-pup pairs were followed from birth to weaning. The analysis of maternal effects was limited to female pups because of the small sample size of male weaners. High weaning weight was associated with those female pups whose mothers spent more time ashore attending their offspring. Weaning weight showed no relationship with perinatal duration, number of feeding trips to sea, days at sea or date of weaning. A further 63 mother-pup pairs were analysed for the effects of maternal body condition (weight/length), age and timing of birth on offspring body weight and condition. Pup weight and condition were weakly correlated with maternal age in female pups. Male pups born earlier in the season were heavier and in better condition. Maternal and offspring body weight and condition were unrelated. For the Antarctic fur seal population at South Georgia where the food supply was apparently not limiting in summer, maternal condition and foraging time were subordinate to maternal care on land (as expressed by attendance duration) in determining offspring weight at weaning. 相似文献

Summary The number of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) in the area of the Scotia Sea has been increasing. Observation of their distribution on the breeding grounds are important to help design and interpret censuses. These seals are highly polygynous. In the study area at Bird Island, South Georgia, females give birth and are mated in densely packed colonies located along the shore close to the tideline. Males establish territories in this area, but are also found further inland. This study examined the density-dependent processes regulating the instantaneous size of the male breeding population; the distribution of males in relation to space and the number of females available to be mated and the effect of gregarious behaviour of females on male dispersion. Males were only territorial on the beaches in the areas where most females gave birth and subsequently had their post-partum oestrus. There was an apparent lower (19–20 m2) and upper (40 m2) limit to territory size. Males were excluded from the beach areas when the average density on the beaches was greater than 5 males per 200 m2. An asymptotic density of 10–11 males per 200 m2 was reached on the beaches and 4–5 males per 200 m2 elsewhere. These two asymptotic densities may represent the upper and lower limits of density for a territorial system of dispersion. A model of the temporal changes in female numbers suggested that the total number of females occupying an area of beach during the mating period was approximately twice the number at the peak of the season. There was no indication that males compensated for low female density by increasing territory size. Females and pups became more dispersed after the end of the mating period. It is suggested that one function of gregariousness in females is as a mechanism for mate selection. This study also has implications for methods used to measure population size. 相似文献

The diet of the Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus gazella at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) was investigated at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, by the analysis of 18 and 33 scats collected during
February 1996 and 1997 respectively. Overall, fish were the most frequent prey (74.5%) and predominated by mass (54.4%), whereas
krill predominated by number (94.2%). This coincides well with the pattern observed in 1997, but in 1996 krill was the most
important prey by number and mass (50.2%). The importance of the remaining taxa represented in the samples (octopods, hyperiids
and bivalves) was negligible. Among fish, myctophids represented 85.2% of the fish mass, with Gymnoscopelus nicholsi and Electrona antarctica being the main prey. These two species predominated in 1997, whereas the channichthyid Cryodraco antarcticus and the nototheniid Gobionotothen gibberifrons were dominant in 1996. The importance of the myctophids as prey of the Antarctic fur seal is discussed.

The arrival of Antarctic fur seals at a breeding beach on Bird Island, South Georgia, was studied over five consecutive breeding seasons, 1983 to 1987. Experienced bulls arrived first and established breeding territories on the beaches in anticipation of the arrival of the cows. Male arrival, which is less synchronous within years than female arrival, was significantly later in 1987 than in any other year. Female arrival, estimated by pup birth date where necessary, was highly synchronous; it usually started when 80% or more of potential territory sites were occupied by males. Cows arrived significantly later in 1984 and 1987 than in 1983, 1985 or 1986. The late arrival of both males and females in 1987 is attributed to unusually severe climatic conditions during the preceding winter. The late arrival and reduced fecundity of females in 1984 is attributed to markedly reduced food availability during the austral winter and summer of 1983. Males were not affected in 1984 because they could move away from the area of reduced food availability earlier than females and because they have a more varied diet. Factors influencing the winter distribution, the timing and pattern of arrival and the breeding of male and female Antarctic fur seals are discussed. 相似文献

The diet of Antarctic fur seals,Arctocephalus gazella, during the summer-autumn period at Mossman Peninsula,Laurie Island (South Orkneys) 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Summary From mid January to April 1988 a total of 105 faecal samples of non breeding male fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was collected at Mossman Peninsula, Laurie Island. Examination of scats containing prey remains showed that fur seals fed mainly on krill, occurring in 100% of samples but fish were also a common food item (78.8%). Myctophids constituted more than 90% of fish taken by fur seals. Squid beaks occurred in 34.3% of scats, being more common in the autumn period. 相似文献

The extent and causes of pup mortality in the Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella , were investigated at sites of high and low density at South Georgia. Mortality was greater at the high density site, (17—31% of annual pup production) than at the low density site (36%). The main causes of death, starvation and skull injury, occur more frequently at the high density site. Most starvation was caused by failure of the mother-pup bond to form, often caused by disturbance induced by the activities of breeding bulls. In some seasons starvation of older pups may be influenced by reduced food availability but this was usually of minor importance. Injury to the skull resulted from bites inflicted by females either accidently during birth or when pups tried to suck from females other than their mother. Trampling of young pups by bulls was probably responsible for the appreciable incidence of ruptured livers. Infectious disease and drowning played minor roles in pup mortality. Pups born late in the season suffered disproportionately greater mortality which may relate to female age and condition. Food availability (both during and prior to the breeding season) and weather are likely to account for year to year variation in pup mortality rates but the basic rate is primarily determined by breeding density. Further population increase and colonization of new beaches is expected until food resources during the summer, or more probably the winter, become limiting. 相似文献

The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at the Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula, by the analysis of 31 and 149 scats collected from January to March 1998 and 2000, respectively. Overall, fish and krill, followed by penguins and squids, were the most frequent prey and constituted the bulk of the diet. The importance of the remaining taxa represented in the samples (octopods, gastropods, bivalves, isopods, polychaetes and poriferans) was negligible. Among fish, channichthyids constituted the bulk of the diet, with Chionodraco rastrospinosus and Chaenodraco wilsoni, followed by the nototheniid, Pleuragramma antarcticum, being the main prey. The myctophid, Electrona antarctica, was the most frequent and numerous fish prey. The results are discussed and compared with those reported for the South Shetland Islands, the closest area for which similar information is available. 相似文献

The number of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella hauled out at Signy Island in the South Orkneys was monitored annually between 1977 and 2008. Over the study period seal
abundance showed a tenfold increase, from a minimum of 1,643 seals in 1978 to a maximum of 21,303 in 1994. The majority of
individuals observed were young adult males, likely to be migrants from South Georgia, with small numbers of female seals
and only 65 pups recorded during the survey period. Variability in counts showed a similar pattern to Laurie Island, also
in the South Orkneys archipelago, suggesting a similar annual immigration of seals to these two islands. The date of first
seal arrival was correlated with the date of fast-ice breakout at Factory Cove, Signy Island, and years in which break out
was exceptionally late (>21 December) corresponded with years of reduced seal abundance. While the presence of fast-ice during
the early breeding season may currently inhibit the establishment of a major breeding population of fur seals at Signy Island,
it is important that routine monitoring should continue, particularly in the light of current patterns of climate warming
in the Antarctic. 相似文献

The fish component in the diet of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands from mid January to April 1988. Fish otoliths occurred in 78.8% of faecal droppings. Most of the otoliths extracted from scats belonged to Myctophid fish (93.4%), mainly Electrona antarctica and Gymnoscopelus nicholsi. These two fish species thus constituted the bulk of the diet. A greater percentage of the otoliths from G. nicholsi (31.1%) in this study were considered suitable for measurement in comparison with 10.3% from scats at Heard Island in 1990 and 11.4% at Macquarie Island in 1988/89. This lesser degree of erosion would suggest that foraging areas of fur seals during this study were closer to land than during previous studies. During the period studied, the commercial fishery around the South Orkneys was not based on Myctophid fish so there was no direct competition for fish between the fur seals and fisheries. 相似文献

Growth of upper canine teeth of male Antarctic fur seals ( Arctocephalus gazella ) which died of natural causes at Bird Island, South Georgia, was quantified from measurements of annual layers in longitudinal sections of teeth. Mean age at death was 7.69±0.07 years and this showed a small but significant increase through the period when samples were collected (1972/73–1988/89). There were significant correlations between morphometrics of teeth and those of seals, suggesting that tooth growth provided an indication of body growth. Tooth growth rate was lowest in seals which died early (age 4 years) and increased with age at death. Changes in the growth pattern of teeth suggested that fur seals which became sexually mature early also died early. Tooth growth layers deposited in each calendar year were compared with the expected layer depth based on a linear relationship between layer depth and age at which each layer was deposited. There was significant variation in the depth of tooth growth layers deposited in different years, suggesting that growth was greater in some years than others. No trends in cohort strengths were detected, but particularly poor years for growth were closely related to years in which reproductive performance was also observed to be low. Variations in growth from 1967/68 to 1987/88 were correlated significantly (P < 0.008) with the Southern Oscillation Index of climatic variation. 相似文献

In February 1992, 34 faecal samples from non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, were collected at Stranger Point, King George Island, South Shetlands. Fish constituted an important part of the diet, occurring
in 90% of those scats containing prey remains. From 1162 otoliths found in the faeces, 1086 were identified to at least family
level. Myctophids and nototheniids represented together almost 90% of the fish eaten. The dominant species were Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Pleuragramma antarcticum and Electrona antarctica, contributing 33.3%, 30.8% and 12.0% of the otoliths respectively. The standard length of these three species was estimated
from otoliths with little or no signs of erosion. This study showed that fur seals fed mainly on pelagic fish species that
are often associated with krill. These findings are corroborated by fur seal diving patterns.

The vocal repertoire, structure, and behavioral context of airborne vocalizations produced by Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) are described using recordings made at a breeding colony on Kanowna Island, Bass Strait, Australia. The study identified six different call types: three produced by males (bark, guttural threat, and submissive call); five produced by females (bark, guttural threat, submissive call, growl, and pup attraction call) and the female attraction call produced by pups and yearlings. Vocalizations were compared according to age and sex classes. The overall structure and function of the pup attraction and female attraction call produced by females, yearlings, and pups, was similar. However, while similar in their overall appearance, certain call types have a lower fundamental frequency when compared with other fur seals. In addition, the male bark call alters in rate of production according to the context used, where calls are slower when males are stationary and advertising their territorial status and faster when males are involved in confrontations with other males or actively herding females. Further research is required to investigate changes in environmental conditions and their effects on shaping the call structure and communication in Australian fur seals. 相似文献

The composition of Antarctic fur seal prey was assessed through analysis of scats collected in March 1994 on Ile de Croy,
Iles Nuageuses. Fish remains predominated in samples, occurring in 95% of droppings. A total of 968 otoliths allowed the identification
of 16 fish species. Myctophid fish (12 species) dominated the diet both by number (94% of the otoliths) and by fish reconstituted
mass (76%). Three fish species constituted together 87% of the reconstituted mass: the myctophids Gymnoscopelus nicholsi (52%) and G. piabilis (12%), and the channichthyid Champsocephalus gunnari (23%). Prey distribution suggests that during late summer seals forage in upper slope waters in the northeast of the Kerguelen
Archipelago.

The influence of two sampling protocols on diet determination of two marine predators, the gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) and Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella), was investigated. The collection of diet samples on three occasions over a 2-week period was compared with collecting all
samples during a single session, as current CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme protocols recommend. Some differences in
the mass of food recovered from penguins were found but this was attributed to the mass of penguin sampled. There were no
differences in diet composition between protocols and although body mass was a significant determinant of the mean length
of krill Euphausia superba recovered from penguins, there were no differences between sampling protocols. This study has shown that differences between
sampling frequencies are small and a variety of sampling protocols can produce results acceptable for inter-annual monitoring.
The mass of sampled individuals can account for significant variation and should be recorded, especially if sampling frequencies
and sizes are low.

The Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella, in the eastern South Pacific Ocean, first reported on Hoste Island, Cape Horn in 1973, and then on the Juan Fernandez Archipelago
in 1982 and 1983, was recorded again in October and December 2009 on the southern coast of Chile. Three different individuals
were seen simultaneously on a single day at Punta Dungenes, Magellan Strait, and a fourth individual was sighted at the northeastern
coast of Almirantazgo Sound, Tierra del Fuego. These records represent the first sightings of live Arctocephalus gazella in southern Chile. Although it is difficult to establish both their origin and rationale for dispersion outside of their
distribution range, the substantial breeding population recovery in South Georgia and food shortages during the breeding and
post-breeding season are suggested as possible explanations. 相似文献

Interannual variation in aspects of the breeding biology of Antarctic prions was studied for three summers (1989–1992) at Bird island, South Georgia. Egg size, mass and incubation period remained constant. Laying, hatching and fledging were significantly delayed and less synchronous in 1991/92 (range of laying dates 51 days compared to 10–15 days in the two other seasons). This was due to an unusually cold and protracted winter, with ice blocking burrows into the spring, restricting availability of nest sites. Brooding lasted longer in 1991/92 but the overall fledging period was unchanged. Skeletal growth rates did not vary amongst years; growth in mass was slower in 1989/90 but fledging mass was similar in all three years. In 1989/90 and 1991/ 92 later hatched chicks grew (in mass) faster. The survival of chicks from hatching to fledging did not vary amongst years or with hatching date. Feeding frequency was similar between years, once allowance had been made for starlit nights. Thus late and asynchronous breeding in 1991/92 did not result in reduced breeding success either through predation or starvation.
Crustaceans formed 98–99% of the mass of the identifiable portion of regurgitated food samples. Significant annual variation was found within these crustaceans with the presence of krill (least in 1990/91) being inversely related to that of amphipods and copepods. There was no relationship between diet composition and chick growth or survival. Other seabird species, lacking the morphological specialization for feeding on copepods and amphipods, had very low breeding success in 1990/91, when krill was scarce. 相似文献
