SUMMARY. The life histories of twelve abundant species in the River Coquet are given together with notes on certain scarce species. The life histories are compared with those recorded for other river systems and major differences in findings between studies are related to geographical location and temperature. Catastrophic mortalities noted for some populations coincided with the presence of slush-ice in the river bed and subsequent winter spates caused by meltwaters. Extended hatching periods are apparently adaptive and compensate for such losses. Life histories are also compared along the length of the R. Coquet. Hatching periods, growth rates and emergence periods show regional differences which are apparently dependent on altitudinal variations in temperature regime.  相似文献

Pike‐perch (Sander lucioperca L. 1758) is one of the freshwater species caught by professional fishermen in the Netherlands. The species is also popular with sport fishermen. Little is known about its migration and rehabilitation in large river systems. The aim of the present study was to obtain data on the movements of pike‐perch in the Dutch large river systems and investigate when and how far individual fish swim up‐ or downstream. Seasonal migration was expected. The second objective was to gain information on how many fish pass the Haringvlietdam when migrating downstream during high discharge, and ending up in the North Sea. The third objective was to gain data on how many fish were caught by the fishermen. NEDAP TRAIL System® transponders were surgically implanted in 286 pike‐perch between June 2007 and October 2008. Marked fish could be detected via several detection stations in the river systems throughout the Netherlands and one in the River Rhine station in Germany. Sport fishermen were asked to inform the organization when a marked fish was caught. Data collected between June 2007 and April 2010 indicate a pike‐perch home range of 30–40 km, with some individuals migrating up to more than 200 km. A regional approach regarding fisheries management is necessary. No seasonal patterns were found. Swimming activity was highest during darkness. Results showed pike‐perch around the Haringvlietdam swimming in the saltwater area on the sea side of the dam, and returning to the freshwater Lake Haringvliet, indicating that the structure of the dam is used for feeding, but also that the fish will die if the dam is closed when fish are still outside.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon straying from the River Imsa   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4  
Mean estimated straying rate for Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. leaving the River Imsa as smolts during 1976–1999 was 15% for hatchery fish and 6% for wild conspecifics. Hatchery Atlantic salmon selected for production traits during four or more generations strayed >50%. The straying rate was higher for Atlantic salmon staying 2 rather than 1 year at sea before attaining maturity. For spawning, 96% of the strays entered streams within 420 km from the River Imsa, and c . 80% entered streams within 60 km of the mouth of the River Imsa, whether the fish were wild or hatchery released. Within the 60 km zone, the number of strays caught in a river increased with the Atlantic salmon catch in that river, but there was no significant relationship between straying rate and water discharge or distance from the river to the River Imsa. The observed straying rate of hatchery Atlantic salmon decreased with increasing number of fish entering the River Imsa. Sexual maturation as parr did not influence the tendency to stray. The results suggest that the establishment of temporary zones, free of fish farms, outside important Atlantic salmon rivers by the fisheries authorities in Norway should be large, whole fjords, to be effective.  相似文献

Fisheries‐induced evolution can change the trajectory of wild fish populations by selectively targeting certain phenotypes. For important fish species like Atlantic salmon, this could have large implications for their conservation and management. Most salmon rivers are managed by specifying an angling season of predetermined length based on population demography, which is typically established from catch statistics. Given the circularity of using catch statistics to estimate demographic parameters, it may be difficult to quantify the selective nature of angling and its evolutionary impact. In the River Etne in Norway, a recently installed trap permits daily sampling of fish entering the river, some of which are subsequently captured by anglers upstream. Here, we used 31 microsatellites to establish an individual DNA profile for salmon entering the trap, and for many of those subsequently captured by anglers. These data permitted us to investigate time of rod capture relative to river entry, potential body size‐selective harvest, and environmental variables associated with river entry. Larger, older fish entered the river earlier than smaller, younger fish of both sexes, and larger, older females were more abundant than males and vice versa. There was good agreement between the sizes of fish harvested by angling, and the size distribution of the population sampled on the trap. These results demonstrate that at least in this river, and with the current timing of the season, the angling catch reflects the population's demographics and there is no evidence of size‐selective harvest. We also demonstrated that the probability of being caught by angling declines quickly after river entry. Collectively, these data indicate that that the timing of the fishing season, in relation to the upstream migration patterns of the different demographics of the population, likely represents the most significant directional evolutionary force imposed by angling.  相似文献

1. A 7‐year study was conducted in three hydrologically distinct sections within the highly regulated, lowland Campaspe River to investigate the influence of hydrology on temporal and spatial patterns in fish composition, abundance and recruitment. One section had 6 months, one section 2 months and one section no months of increased flow due to storage releases. The fish fauna of the less regulated, nearby Broken River served as a reference to which that of the Campaspe River was compared for the last 3 years of the study to allow insight into the relative effects of hydrology, barriers to movement and other environmental characteristics. The study included one high‐flow year, a moderate‐flow year and five low‐flow years. 2. A total of 16 fish species – 10 native and six alien – were caught in the Campaspe River, although of the native species, only three are considered to have self‐sustaining populations. The remaining species are either itinerants or a result of stocking. Alien species comprised approximately 64% of the total biomass of all fish caught. 3. Overall composition of the fish fauna did not differ significantly by year, but did by section of river. Species richness and the abundance of most of the dominant species also differed significantly by river section, but there was little inter‐annual variation in the abundance of any species, except for European perch and for common carp; the latter showing an increase in abundance following a high‐flow event during the spring of 2000 as a result of recruitment. 4. Overall faunal composition was not influenced by hydrology. However, multiple regression indicated that species richness, abundance of the dominant species and abundance of young‐of‐year (YOY) of golden perch, European perch and common carp all were influenced significantly by hydrological variables. The nature of the relationships was dependent on river section and hydrological season (‘winter’ or ‘spring/summer’). Of note was the result that the total abundance of fish and that of YOY common carp were significantly positively related to the number of spells above the threshold for movement upstream through the lower two weirs in the Campaspe River. Only one significant relationship between hydrological and fish‐related variables was found for the upper river section, whereas seven and five were found for the lower and middle sections respectively. 5. Comparisons with fish collected in the Broken River over 3 years suggest that the fauna of the Broken River is in a more natural state than that of the Campaspe River. Since the two rivers do not differ substantially in water quality, and since both contain significant weirs, which act as barriers to movement of fish, flow regulation is most likely to be the major reason for the poor state of the fauna in the Campaspe River.  相似文献

We studied spatial and temporal patterns in fish species composition and diversity at the upper Juruá River located in the west Brazilian Amazon. We collected with gillnet 822 fishes belonging to 90 species in the main Juruá River, its tributaries and the floodplain lakes during wet and dry seasons. Fish abundance and species richness were greater in the dry season. During that season, fishes may be concentrated due to the low water level, being caught more easily by gillnets. There has been a trend towards a greater fish biomass caught in lakes. This might be associated with a greater environmental stability as lakes may be less subject to large variations in water level. The fish communities differed between the two seasons and between lakes and the lotic environments (main river and tributaries). Fish species from the family Curimatidae were most abundant in the lakes, while Pimelodus spp. and Hypostomus spp. predominated in the main Juruá River. Seasonal variations in fish communities may be related to differences in the migratory behavior among fish species. Such spatial and temporal patterns influencing fish community structure at the Upper Juruá Extractive Reserve must be accounted for in management and conservation strategies.  相似文献

Fifty‐three one‐sea‐winter Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (45–63 cm L T) were radio‐tagged in the Tana fjord, Barents Sea, in 1995. Thirty‐seven fish (70%) entered the freshwater zone of the River Tana in an average of 3 days after release in the fjord. The migration speeds in the lowest river section below the first riffle area were significantly higher than in the subsequent river section below the second riffle area. Similarly, the observed time spent in the first riffle area was significantly lower than in the next riffle area. The majority of Atlantic salmon entered the river during the hours of high tide and the subsequent ebb tide. In addition, most river entries were recorded around midnight. No effects of river flow on the river entry or migration speed were detected, but the migration speed of Atlantic salmon in both river sections examined was greater at lower temperatures. Twenty‐eight fish (72%) were recaptured in the river, 71% of them with weirs and gillnets, and 29% by rod and line. Over half of the Atlantic salmon (54%) were recaptured within 3 weeks following river entry, and within the first 100 km of the river (56%). The results are discussed in relation to earlier studies on multi‐sea‐winter Atlantic salmon in the River Tana.  相似文献

The River Coquet is a clean, fast flowing, moderately calcareous river. It is young to mature in development and supports a typical torrential fauna. Marked trends in successional replacement along the river course are confined to the scarce species of Ephemeroptera and the absence of longitudinal zonation in the distribution of some common species is related to the topographical characteristics of the system. A distinct successional trend by one species is attributed to its intolerance to the lower temperatures at high altitudes. Major discontinuities in distribution are found between the Ephemeroptera of the main river and certain tributaries. The paucity of certain otherwise abundant species in one region is related to silt deposition resulting from sand and gravel excavation.  相似文献

Morphological and behavioral traits of Rasbora paviei from river and lake environments are studied. For investigations, the fish were caught from the middle reaches of the Cai River and from the inshore zone of the Kam Lam Reservoir (Khanh Hoa Province, Central Vietnam). Phenotypic differences are found in river and lake fish groups. Experimentally, differences in tactics and efficiency of defensive behavior are found in specimens from different habitats in the presence of a predator—Lepisosteus sp. (Lepisosteidae). In river specimens of Rasbora, the defensive reaction is more efficient in comparison with specimens from the reservoir. The river specimens of Rasbora used predominantly the tactics of group defense from the predator and stayed in a school longer than the lake specimens.  相似文献

This study was performed to observe the infection rate and infection intensity of fresh water fish such as pale chub (Z. platypus) and dark chub (Z. temminckii) with the metacercariae of C. armatus. The fish were caught in several rivers and streams from June to September, 1988 and examined by artificial digestion technique. Total 370 fish were caught at 19 rivers. The metacercarial (C. armatus) infection rate and average burden in Z. platypus were 86.8% and 224, and those in Z. temminckii were 78.5% and 131. The infection rate and burden per fish were 73.4% and 32 in the fish caught from the Han river, and 88.0% and 44 from the Youngsan river. All fish caught from the Keum and the Tamjin river were infected and their mean metacercarial density was 45 and 59 respectively. The infection rate and density in fish caught from the Seomjin and Nagdong rivers were 100% and 119, and 81.0% and 348 respectively. From this study, it is confirmed that C. armatus is widely distributed along 5 major rivers in Korea.  相似文献

A comparative study has been made of the haptoral morphology of four species of diplozoon (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) from the gills of fish exposed to different levels of water pollution in two river systems in eastern Europe. An examination of the haptors of Paradiplozoon homoion (Bychowsky & Nagibina 1959), Paradiplozoon ergensi (Pejcoch 1968) and Paradiplozoon megan (Bychowsky & Nagibina 1959) from chub caught in the River Morava, Czech Republic and of Diplozoon paradoxum (Nordmann 1832) from bream recovered from the River Volga, Russia has revealed abnormalities to the attachment clamps. Two abnormal conditions were found: structural alterations to the attachment clamps and changes in the number of attachment clamps; these occurred both singly and in combination. A higher frequency of abnormal attachment clamps was found in diplozoons from fish caught in the more polluted localities of both rivers. The abnormalities have been recorded and their morphology compared in the light of conditions of environmental stress.  相似文献

Over the past few decades, fish resources have declined severely owing to the river–lake disconnection within the Yangtze River floodplain. Studies on fish migrations between rivers and floodplain waters are imperative for fish resources restoration and lake management. However, few studies have as yet documented the migration rhythms of river–lake migratory fishes. Monthly investigations of the fish assemblage structure were conducted in three regions of the Dongting Lake, which is connected to the Yangtze River. Main results were: (i) Fish catches varied greatly, depending on the water level and area of the lake; (ii) Ten river–lake migratoty species were caught during the study, 80% of these during July–October when the water level was high. Species richness and relative abundance both decreased with increasing distance from the river, and the timing of peak abundance occurred later in the year; (iii) Abundance of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) peaked in July and August and were mainly composed of 0 + fishes. The results revealed that the key time for migration into the lake is July–August. Combining the results from previous studies, a comprehensive view is given of migration patterns of four domestic Chinese carps; (iv) Brass gudgeon (Coreius heterodon), appeared to migrate into the Dongting Lake as two separate shoals, differentiated by body size. They also appeared to remain close to the lake mouth area. Based on the above results, two recommendations can be made for river–lake migratory fish conservation in the Yangtze floodplain: prolonging the current fishing ban period of April–June to April–September; and opening sluice gates for as long as possible during April–September in order to maximize the opportunities for fish migration.  相似文献

The Shire River drains from Lake Malawi to the Lower Zambezi River. Annual flow is dependent mainly on lake level, partially controlled by the operation of a barrage at Liwonde to regulate flows for hydroelectricity generation in the escarpment reaches of the river. Downstream of the escarpment, the floodplains of the Lower Shire River support important subsistence fisheries that yielded on average 5 100 t y?1 between 1977 and 1993. Catches from the major fishery area, the Elephant Marsh, were positively correlated with mean annual flow for the same year. Since the target fish species (mainly clariid catfishes) were mostly caught in their second and third year, improved recruitment through higher breeding success at higher flow levels is less likely to explain interannual variation in catches than is greater upstream migration of fish from the Lower Zambezi River in high-flow years. In 1978 a sudden closure of Liwonde Barrage resulted in rapid drainage of stagnant water from the Elephant Marsh floodplain vegetation into the river, causing a mass fish mortality and thus a marked decline in catches from 1979, followed by gradual recovery by 1981. The delay in recovery contrasts with the annual direct catch/flow relationship, and raises questions about the most important influences on Lower Shire catch rates.  相似文献

Environmental parameters and ichthyofauna were investigated over a 2 years period in three regions along the 200 km length of Cross River. The objective of the study was to quantify the relative importance of local environmental conditions prevailing within sampling sites and the composition and abundance of the principal fish species in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the river. Vegetation cover, size of river, flow velocity, water level, temperature, transparency, and food availability explained the observed seasonal and spatial changes in fish abundance. Forty-six species and 28 genera of fish belonging to 16 families were recorded among the 14,466 fish caught. Three fish families (Cichlidae, Bagridae, and Clariidae) yielded highest number (41.3%) of species while Denticeptidae, Protopteridae, and Osteoglossidae had the least. Oreochromis niloticus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and Clarias anguillaris numerically dominated (46.4%) catch composition. Species richness was higher for the river stretch in forest area than in savanna, and it was correlated significantly with width of the reach, water transparency, depth, and flow velocity (P < 0.001) of the river. Wet season samples were more diverse (>0.6) and had higher richness (>9.7) than those for dry season. Wet season and forest regions were therefore critical in maintaining fish stock of Cross River.  相似文献

The behaviour of radio-tagged adult pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca (L.)) from two areas in the Danish River Gudenaa were recorded prior to, and during the spawning period. Eight of 13 tagged fish in the lower reaches of the river were located throughout the whole study. Five of these fish moved upstream to various sites in the river prior to spawning, which occurred from late April to June. The three remaining fish moved to the fjord. These movements were interpreted as a spawning migration, and it is suggested that the lower reaches of the River Gudenaa constitute an over-wintering area for pikeperch, which use different spawning areas. Ten pikeperch caught just downstream of an impassable hydropower plant were radio-tagged and translocated upstream of the dam to a reservoir. Within a week, half of the fish moved to a lake situated more than 30 km upstream the reservoir. This behaviour is hypothesised to be a homing response. The study reveals that the pikeperch is a highly mobile species with a complicated migration pattern, even in relatively small river systems.  相似文献

Three hundred and five Atlantic sturgeon caught in the Hudson River and Hudson Bight were examined for age, body size and gonadal development (histology). Sampled fish ranged in age from 1·5 to 43 years and fork length (LF) 48–244 cm, and included 144 females and 161 males. All young sturgeon (age 1·5–4 years) caught in the river had sexually differentiated gonads. Age and size distributions of subadults and adults at different stages of gametogenesis were sex-specific and conformed with von Bertalanffy growth curves. Males mature faster and at a younger age compared to the females. Females with mid-vitellogenic ovaries were not found and their absence may be related to fishing gear selectivity or out-migration into the ocean during ovarian recrudescence. Mature males and females caught during the spring spawning migration into the Hudson River, ranged in age from 12 to 19 and from 14 to 43 years, and LF 117–185 and 173–244 cm, respectively. Individual fecundity and diameter of fully grown ovarian follicles increased with age and body size, but this increase was dampened in older females. Three hermaphroditic fish were found and all exhibited sparse pre-vitellogenic ovarian follicles embedded in normally developing testicular tissue.  相似文献

We described five novel microsatellite loci for the piracema fish species Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes), endemic to South America and of extreme importance to both commercial and artisanal fisheries across its occurrence area. A primary, unenriched genomic library was constructed and radioactively screened for repetitive motifs. Positive clones were automatically sequenced and based on the design of new primers, polymerase chain reaction assays were carried out to determine optimum reaction and electrophoretic conditions for each characterized locus. We evaluated its usefulness in population genetic studies by determining Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, FIS and a jackknife estimate of the number of alleles for a sample of fish caught below the Funil Hydroelectric Power Plant dam (N = 95), Grande River, Brazil. The number of alleles varied from 3 to 21 and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.58 to 0.91. Two of five loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Jackknife estimates of the number of alleles were higher than the observed number of alleles for three loci and could provide a measure of sampling bias. These markers should provide important tools for the determination of genetic structure, stock delimitation and reservoir fish management in the Grande River as well as to improve hatchery practices for environmental mitigation measures and to help sustain fisheries in the river.  相似文献

The porthole shovelnose catfish, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, is the sixth largest pimelodidae of the Pantanal. Its age and growth were studied using pectoral fin-spines from fish collected in the Cuiabá river basin, Pantanal. The fish, which came from commercial and experimental fisheries, were all caught with hook and line. Growth-ring formation time could not be defined through the Kruskal-Wallis test on marginal increment (H = 4.142; p = 0.247). Nevertheless, decrease in the marginal increment index occurring as waters recede suggests this as the probable time when growth rings form. Estimation of the parameters of von Bertalanffy growth curve, adjusted through nonlinear regression to observed fork lengths, with L(infinity) fixed at 64 cm, were: k = 0.222 year(-1); t(o) = -2.149 years. Individual life span was estimated at 11.4 years. The results suggest that fork length is a good predictor of age for individuals of this species.  相似文献

The Rogue River, Oregon represents one of three important spawning systems for green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, in North America. In this paper we describe the spawning migration, spawning periodicity, and size at maturity for green sturgeon caught in the Rogue River during 2000–2004. Green sturgeon were caught by gill net or angling; 103 individuals were tagged with radio or sonic transmitters (externally or internally). Green sturgeon caught by gill net and angling ranged from 145 cm to 225 cm total length. Histological and visual examinations of gonad tissues indicated that most green sturgeon were spawning or post-spawning adults that entered the Rogue River to spawn. Ripe individuals were caught when water temperature was 10–18°C. Specimens carrying transmitters migrated 17–105 km up river; reaches consisting of likely spawning sites were identified based on sturgeon migratory behavior. Most green sturgeon remained in the Rogue River until late fall or early winter when flows increased, after which they returned to the ocean. Eight green sturgeon (males and females) returned to the Rogue River 2–4 years after leaving, entering the river during March, April, and May when water temperatures ranged from 9°C to 16°C. None of the 103-tagged individuals entered the Rogue River during successive years. There appear to be few known natural threats to adult green sturgeon in the Rogue River. However, our data suggest that a high percentage of adults that spawn in the Rogue River (particularly males) were susceptible to harvest by commercial, Tribal, and sport fisheries after leaving the system because they were not adequately protected by maximum size limits during the period of this study. The implications of maximum size limits (or lack of size limits) to green sturgeon are discussed, and recent actions taken by Oregon and Washington Fish and Wildlife Commissions to manage green sturgeon more conservatively are presented.  相似文献

Fishery is an important economic activity in the Pantanal. Among the regions species, the Pimelodidae catfish stands out as an important part of the annual catch. This study assesses the structure, exploitation and stock management of Hemisorubim platyrhynchos and Sorubim cf. lima, the sixth and seventh largest Pimelodidae of the Pantanal. The analysis is based on fish caught by commercial fishing in the Cuiabá river and landed at the "Ant?nio Moysés Nadaf" Market in the Cuiabá city, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The findings indicate that commercial fishing activities target several fish cohorts and that usually only individuals above mean length at first maturation are caught. Estimates of the instantaneous mortality coefficient show that the current fishing mortality is low. Simulations of relative yield-per-recruit model demonstrate that the current yield of two species could be greater if the fishery effort were increased, indicating that the stocks are underexploited. However, an increase in current fishery efforts should be viewed with caution, since the stock-recruitment relationship for the species is unknown. The results indicate that the current harvest of two species in the Cuiabá River Basin is sustainable.  相似文献
