Plants perceive and respond to a profusion of environmental and endogenous signals that influence their growth and development. The G-protein signalling pathway is a mechanism for transducing extracellular signals that is highly conserved in a range of eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Evidence for the existence of G-protein signalling pathways in higher plants is reviewed, and their potential involvement in plant hormone signal transduction evaluated. A range of biochemical and molecular studies have identified potential components of G-protein signalling in plants, most notably a homologue of the G-protein coupled receptor superfamily (GCR1) and the G alpha and G beta subunits of heterotrimeric G-proteins. G-protein agonists and antagonists are known to influence a variety of signalling events in plants and have been used to implicate heterotrimeric G-proteins in gibberellin and possibly auxin signalling. Antisense suppression of GCR1 in Arabidopsis leads to a phenotype which supports a role for this receptor in cytokinin signalling. These observations suggest that higher plants have at least some of the components of G-protein signalling pathways and that these might be involved in the action of certain plant hormones.  相似文献

Phytohormones not only orchestrate intrinsic developmental programs from germination to senescence but also regulate environmental inputs through complex signalling pathways. Despite building an own signalling network, hormones mutually contribute several signalling systems, which are also essential for plant growth and development, defense, and responses to abiotic stresses. One of such important signalling cascades is G-proteins, which act as critical regulators of a wide range of fundamental cellular processes by transducing receptor signals to the intracellular environment. G proteins are composed of α, β, and γ subunits, and the molecular switching between active and inactive conformation of Gα controls the signalling cycle. The active GTP bound Gα and freed Gβγ have both independent and tightly coordinated roles in the regulation of effector molecules, thereby modulating multiple responses, including hormonal responses. Therefore, an interplay of hormones with G-proteins fine-tunes multiple biological processes of plants; however, their molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Functional characterization of hormone biosynthesis, perception, and signalling components, as well as identification of few effector molecules of G-proteins and their interaction networks, reduces the complexity of the hormonal signalling networks related to G-proteins. In this review, we highlight a valuable insight into the mechanisms of how the G-protein signalling cascades connect with hormonal responses to regulate increased developmental flexibility as well as remarkable plasticity of plants.  相似文献

Genetic screens have been extremely useful in identifying genes involved in hormone signal transduction. However, although these screens were originally designed to identify specific components involved in early hormone signalling, mutations in these genes often confer changes in sensitivity to more than one hormone at the whole-plant level. Moreover, a variety of hormone response genes has been identified through screens that were originally designed to uncover regulators of sugar metabolism. Together, these facts indicate that the linear representation of the hormone signalling pathways controlling a specific aspect of plant growth and development is not sufficient, and that hormones interact with each other and with a variety of developmental and metabolic signals. Following the advent of arabidopsis molecular genetics we are beginning to understand some of the mechanisms by which a hormone is transduced into a cellular response. In this Botanical Briefing we review a subset of genes in arabidopsis that influence hormonal cross-talk, with emphasis on the gibberellin, abscisic acid and ethylene pathways. In some cases it appears that modulation of hormone sensitivity can cause changes in the synthesis of an unrelated hormone, while in other cases a hormone response gene defines a node of interaction between two response pathways. It also appears that a variety of hormones may converge to regulate the turnover of important regulators involved in growth and development. Examples are cited of the recent use of suppressor and enhancer analysis to identify new nodes of interaction between these pathways.  相似文献

Plant hormones are signal molecules, present in trace quantities, that act as major regulators of plant growth and development. They are involved in a wide range of processes such as elongation, flowering, root formation and vascular differentiation. For many years, agriculturists have applied hormones to their crops to either increase the yield, or improve the quality of the commercial product. Nowadays, the knowledge of hormone biosynthesis, degradation and signaling pathways has allowed the utilization of biotechnological tools to further improve the main agricultural crops. Natural or artificial mutants, with impaired functioning of the corresponding genes, have been adopted because of their superior phenotype in specific agricultural traits. In addition, transgenic plants have been generated to regulate internal hormone levels, or their signaling pathways, resulting in some crops that have revolutionized agriculture.  相似文献

Plant growth and development are intimately attuned to fluctuations in environmental variables such as light, temperature and water availability. A broad range of signalling and dynamic response mechanisms allows them to adjust their physiology so that growth and reproductive capacity are optimised for the prevailing conditions. Many of the response mechanisms are mediated by the plant hormones. The hormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays a dominant role in fundamental processes such as seed dormancy and germination, regulation of stomatal movements and enhancing drought tolerance in response to the osmotic stresses that result from water deficit, salinity and freezing. Whereas plants maintain a constant vigilance, there is emerging evidence that the capacity to respond is gated by the circadian clock so that it varies with diurnal fluctuations in light, temperature and water status. Clock regulation enables plants to anticipate regular diurnal fluctuations and thereby presumably to maximise metabolic efficiency. Circadian clock-dependent gating appears to regulate the ABA signalling network at numerous points, including metabolism, transport, perception and activity of the hormone. In this review, we summarise the basic principles and recent progress in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of circadian gating of the ABA response network and how it can affect fundamental processes in plant growth and development.  相似文献

Plant thioredoxins are key actors in the oxidative stress response   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Thioredoxins are ubiquitous disulfide reductases that regulate the redox status of target proteins. Although plant thioredoxins display a striking diversity not found in other organisms, many of their physiological roles have yet to be determined. Based on recent publications investigating thioredoxin targets and genetically modified plants, thioredoxins appear to play a fundamental role in plant tolerance of oxidative stress. They are involved in oxidative damage avoidance by supplying reducing power to reductases detoxifying lipid hydroperoxides or repairing oxidized proteins. Furthermore, other lines of evidence indicate that thioredoxins could act as regulators of scavenging mechanisms and as components of signalling pathways in the plant antioxidant network.  相似文献

Hormone balance and abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Plant hormones play central roles in the ability of plants to adapt to changing environments, by mediating growth, development, nutrient allocation, and source/sink transitions. Although ABA is the most studied stress-responsive hormone, the role of cytokinins, brassinosteroids, and auxins during environmental stress is emerging. Recent evidence indicated that plant hormones are involved in multiple processes. Cross-talk between the different plant hormones results in synergetic or antagonic interactions that play crucial roles in response of plants to abiotic stress. The characterization of the molecular mechanisms regulating hormone synthesis, signaling, and action are facilitating the modification of hormone biosynthetic pathways for the generation of transgenic crop plants with enhanced abiotic stress tolerance.  相似文献

Higher plant antioxidants and redox signaling under environmental stresses   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Main antioxidants in higher plants include glutathione, ascorbate, tocopherol, proline, betaine, and others, which are also information-rich redox buffers and important redox signaling components that interact with biomembrane-related compartments. As an evolutionary consequence of aerobic life for higher plants, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed by partial reduction of molecular oxygen. The above enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in higher plants can protect their cells from oxidative damage by scavenging ROS. In addition to crucial roles in defense system and as enzyme cofactors, antioxidants influence higher plant growth and development by modifying processes from mitosis and cell elongation to senescence and death. Most importantly, they provide essential information on cellular redox state, and regulate gene expression associated with biotic and abiotic stress responses to optimize defense and survival. An overview of the literature is presented in terms of main antioxidants and redox signaling in plant cells. Special attention is given to ROS and ROS-antioxidant interaction as a metabolic interface for different types of signals derived from metabolism and from the changing environment, which regulates the appropriate induction of acclimation processes or, execution of cell death programs, which are the two essential directions for higher plants.

The G protein signalling pathway is one of the most highly conserved mechanisms that enables cells to sense and respond to changes in their environment. Essential components of this are cell surface G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that perceive extracellular ligands, and heterotrimeric G proteins (G proteins) that transduce information from activated GPCRs to down-stream effectors such as enzymes or ion channels. It is now clear from a range of biochemical and molecular studies that some potential G protein signalling components exist in plants. The best examples of these are the seven transmembrane receptor homologue GCR1 and the Gα (GPA1) and Gβ (Gβ1) subunit homologues of heterotrimeric G proteins. G protein agonists and antagonists are known to influence a variety of signalling events in plants and have been used to implicate G proteins in a range of signalling pathways that include the plant hormones gibberellin and auxin. Furthermore, antisense suppression of GCR1 expression in Arabidopsis leads to a phenotype that supports a role for this receptor in cytokinin signalling. This review considers the current evidence for and against functional G protein signalling pathways in higher plants and questions whether or not these might be involved in the action of certain plant hormones.  相似文献

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria are commonly found in the rhizosphere (adjacent to the root surface) and may promote plant growth via several diverse mechanisms, including the production or degradation of the major groups of plant hormones that regulate plant growth and development. Although rhizobacterial production of plant hormones seems relatively widespread (as judged from physico-chemical measurements of hormones in bacterial culture media), evidence continues to accumulate, particularly from seedlings grown under gnotobiotic conditions, that rhizobacteria can modify plant hormone status. Since many rhizobacteria can impact on more than one hormone group, bacterial mutants in hormone production/degradation and plant mutants in hormone sensitivity have been useful to establish the importance of particular signalling pathways. Although plant roots exude many potential substrates for rhizobacterial growth, including plant hormones or their precursors, limited progress has been made in determining whether root hormone efflux can select for particular rhizobacterial traits. Rhizobacterial mediation of plant hormone status not only has local effects on root elongation and architecture, thus mediating water and nutrient capture, but can also affect plant root-to-shoot hormonal signalling that regulates leaf growth and gas exchange. Renewed emphasis on providing sufficient food for a growing world population, while minimising environmental impacts of agriculture because of overuse of fertilisers and irrigation water, will stimulate the commercialisation of rhizobacterial inoculants (including those that alter plant hormone status) to sustain crop growth and yield. Combining rhizobacterial traits (or species) that impact on plant hormone status thereby modifying root architecture (to capture existing soil resources) with traits that make additional resources available (e.g. nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilisation) may enhance the sustainability of agriculture.  相似文献

Sugars are involved in many metabolic and signalling pathways in plants. Sugar signals may also contribute to immune responses against pathogens and probably function as priming molecules leading to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP)-triggered immunity and effector-triggered immunity in plants. These putative roles also depend greatly on coordinated relationships with hormones and the light status in an intricate network. Although evidence in favour of sugar-mediated plant immunity is accumulating, more in-depth fundamental research is required to unravel the sugar signalling pathways involved. This might pave the way for the use of biodegradable sugar-(like) compounds to counteract plant diseases as cheaper and safer alternatives for toxic agrochemicals.  相似文献

Sugar and hormone connections   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Sugars modulate many vital processes that are also controlled by hormones during plant growth and development. Characterization of sugar-signalling mutants in Arabidopsis has unravelled a complex signalling network that links sugar responses to two plant stress hormones--abscisic acid and ethylene--in opposite ways. Recent molecular analyses have revealed direct, extensive glucose control of abscisic acid biosynthesis and signalling genes that partially antagonizes ethylene signalling during seedling development under light. Glucose and abscisic acid promote growth at low concentrations but act synergistically to inhibit growth at high concentrations. The effects of sugar and osmotic stress on morphogenesis and gene expression are distinct. The plasticity of plant growth and development are exemplified by the complex interplay of sugar and hormone signalling.  相似文献
