Sarcoptes mange is an important disease that affects the health, mobility and longevity of bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus) in Australia. We measured the activity patterns of wombats infected with varying levels of mange in an agricultural riparian environment using motion-sensing cameras. Over a 10 month period we observed a greater increase in nocturnal activity of mange-free wombats than those with mange on six or more body sections. The percentage of mange-infected wombats was greater during the day, but in the 6 h after midnight, wombats were detected with fewer mange-infected segments. Air temperature at the time of wombat detections was generally higher for individuals with mange than those without mange. Our results show that diurnal activity of wombats is likely to increase with higher levels of infection by sarcoptes mange. Increased diurnal activity is likely to present serious problems for the persistence of sustainable populations of wild wombats.  相似文献

Wombats belong to Australia's unique marsupial species. Two of the three remaining species, the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus) and the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) are abundant. The third species, the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) has only about 115 individuals left in the wild. This study aimed to gain further insight into the basic reproductive biology of wombat species and evaluate the value of faecal progesterone metabolites and behavioural patterns as a means for non-invasive monitoring of the oestrous cycle in common and the southern hairy-nosed wombats. In an initial study, three different faecal steroid assays showed that 20alpha-OH-pregnanes were the main progesterone metabolites. These metabolites were examined in captive female common wombats (n = 5) and southern hairy-nosed wombats (n = 2). In one female common wombat 11.7 days with a follicular phase of 25.6 +/- 6.3 days and a luteal phase of 28.2 +/- 12.7 days. The data for faecal pregnanes obtained in the southern and in one male common wombat oestrous related behavioural data were obtained. Individual cycling females exhibited a significant relationship between plasma progesterone and faecal pregnanes. In the common wombat, the values for faecal pregnanes showed an oestrous cycle length of 55.1 +/- hairy-nosed wombat during the breeding season gave an oestrous cycle length of 41.1 +/- 12.8 days with a follicular phase of 27.9 +/- 12.3 days and a short luteal phase of 13.3 +/- 1.1 days. The behavioural data show that the faecal sniffing behaviour of the male, tended to increase around the time that oestrous was found. In conclusion, monitoring of 20alpha-OH-pregnanes in wombat faeces could be a useful methodology to monitor reproductive cycles in the wombat, and can possibly be applied to monitor the endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat.  相似文献

Sarcoptic mange has been identified as the most significant infectious disease affecting the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus). Biochemistry and haematology values for wild common wombats have not been published previously. A 35% of the wombat population were exhibiting clinical signs of the disease. Significant changes in blood haematology and biochemistry parameters were observed in affected animals. A seasonal variation in numbers of animals affected was demonstrated. Females appeared to be more commonly affected than males although the reason for this is not forthcoming.  相似文献

Four mature female wombats (Vombatus ursinus) were experimentally infected per os with 10,000 viable eggs of Taenia hydatigena. One wombat was killed and examined on each of days 7, 14, 28 and 56 post-inoculation (PI). Subcapsular haemorrhagic and healing tracks were found in the livers on each day, and on day 56 PI a granuloma, probably a reaction to a degenerating larvae, was evident. There were no signs of further development in the peritoneal cavity and it was concluded that the wombat is probably an aberrant host for this cestode. Similar lesions in the livers of three of seven wombats examined in South Gippsland, Victoria suggested strongly that these had been caused by migrating T. hydatigena larvae.  相似文献

Generalizations about sociobiology require investigations of species with diverse ecological roles and phylogenetic affiliations. The southern hairy-nosed wombat ( Lasiorhinus latifrons ) is valuable here, in that it is a marsupial of semi-arid habitat, and one of the largest burrowing herbivores (commonly attaining 26 kg). Its sociobiology is poorly understood because the species is nocturnal, shy, and difficult to observe or capture nondisruptively. To investigate aspects of the species' sociobiology in continuous habitat, we applied high-intensity, temporally replicated, noninvasive sampling and genotyping of hairs to identify individuals and their sex. Spatial relatedness (kinship) structure was estimated, and related to patterns of burrow-use. To understand the association of kinship with burrow/warren-sharing and preferential colocation between wombats, > 100 genetically 'tagged' individuals at Brookfield Conservation Park (Murraylands, South Australia) were 'tracked' through multiple seasons between 1999 and 2001. Dispersal was female-biased, and may be performed by females after breeding. Conversely, males were philopatric. Male kin relationships were characterized by preferential burrow- and warren-sharing among closely related males, often in associations lasting for years. In contrast, females under-associated with their close female relatives and did not form matrilineal groupings with potential for favourable kin interactions. This fundamental departure from the predominant mammalian pattern raises questions about the origins and maintenance of the system, which is now known from all three species of wombat. The present study provides starting points to address those questions by adding to our knowledge of longitudinal spatiotemporal associations and habitat use of a marsupial with the unusual system of female-biased dispersal, and by outlining robust methodologies.  相似文献

Geographically widespread species present challenges for conservation assessment. We used long-term spotlight surveys to assess spatiotemporal dynamics of bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), encompassing 34 years of surveys for the Tasmanian mainland sub-species (V. u. tasmaniensis, 1985–2018) and 25 years for the Flinders Island sub-species (V. u. ursinus, 1994–2018). Wombat populations increased on the Tasmanian mainland by 2.59 times and on Flinders Island by 3.51 times ( = 1.05 and 1.1 times increase/yr, respectively). At smaller spatial scales on mainland Tasmania, increases in wombat counts generally occurred within meteorological regions and regional zones, except for the Central North (West Tamar) region where a decrease in wombats is linked to a sarcoptic mange disease epizootic. We used generalized additive models to assess relationships between variables and wombat counts. The most supported variables at the mainland Tasmania scale were (in order of importance) year, positive associations with time-lagged minimum temperature, Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) counts, and moonlight, and a negative association with time-lagged rainfall. Among meteorological regions, variables associated with wombat counts exhibited some heterogeneity, with temperature and rainfall the most frequently associated variables. Our long-term, large-scale, and ecologically diverse analysis of bare-nosed wombats supports spotlight monitoring as a valuable, relatively simple, and affordable survey method in Tasmania and beyond. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The highly endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is extremely difficult to study in the wild, and its numbers correspondingly difficult to estimate. Disturbance to the animals caused by trapping and radio-tracking may not only constitute an excessive risk to the population's viability, but may also yield biased data. The results of a pilot study are presented, which clearly show noninvasive genotyping to be a highly feasible and reliable alternative censusing method for L. krefftii. The protocol can identify individual wombats from single hairs collected remotely at burrow entrances, using: (i) a panel of microsatellite markers giving individual-specific genotypes; and (ii) a Y-linked sexing marker in combination with a single-copy X-linked amplification control. Using just the eight most variable microsatellites (of 20 available), only one in 200 pairs of full-sibs are predicted to share the same genotype. From 12 wombat hair samples collected on tape suspended over burrow entrances, three known female, two known male and an unknown wombat of each sex were identified. The approach will allow censusing of individuals that evade capture, and will also reveal some otherwise problematic aspects of the behaviour of this elusive animal.  相似文献

Seven common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) were exposed and two of these were re-exposed to Sarcoptes scabiei var. wombati (Acari: Sarcoptidae). For wombats exposed for the first time, five exposed to 5,000 mites on their shoulder developed moderate to severe parakeratotic mange after 11 wk compared with two given 1,000 mites that developed mild clinical signs of mange after 11 wk. For re-exposed wombats, one of two given 5,000 mites developed mild parakeratotic mange and the other developed severe parakeratotic mange. Initial signs of mange were erythema followed by parakeratosis, alopecia, excoriation and fissuring of parakeratotic crust and skin. Erythema usually became apparent within 14 days after exposure (DAE) or within 24 hrs of re-exposure. Parakeratosis was visible 14-21 DAE and alopecia first occurred 35-77 DAE. Clinical signs increased in severity over time and lesions spread slowly from the site of exposure. Mangy wombats scratched excessively, lost weight, and exhibited a significant neutrophilia compared with control wombats. Treatment of mange with three injections of ivermectin, 300 micrograms/kg, 10 days apart led to complete resolution of clinical signs. However mites were not entirely eliminated until wombats received a second regime of treatment.  相似文献

1. A host specialist parasitoid is thought to have greater efficiency in locating hosts or greater ability to overcome host defence than a generalist species. This leads to the prediction that a specialist should locate and parasitise more hosts than a generalist in a given arena. The work reported here tested these predictions by comparing the host‐searching behaviour of Diadegma semiclausum (a specialist) and Cotesia plutellae (an oligophagous species), two parasitoids of larval Plutella xylostella. 2. Both parasitoids employed antennal search and ovipositor search when seeking hosts but D. semiclausum also seemed to use visual perception in the immediate vicinity of hosts. 3. Larvae of P. xylostella avoided detection by parasitoids by moving away from damaged plant parts after short feeding bouts. When they encountered parasitoids, the larvae wriggled vigorously as they retreated and often hung from silk threads after dropping from a plant. 4. These two parasitoids differed in their responses to host defences. Diadegma semiclausum displayed a wide‐area search around feeding damage and waited near the silk thread for a suspended host to climb up to the leaf, then attacked it again. Cotesia plutellae displayed an area‐restricted search and usually pursued the host down the silk thread onto the ground. 5. Diadegma semiclausum showed a relatively fixed behavioural pattern leading to oviposition but C. plutellae exhibited a more plastic behavioural pattern. 6. The time spent by the two parasitoids on different plants increased with increasing host density, but the time spent either on all plants or a single plant by D. semiclausum was longer than that of C. plutellae. Diadegma semiclausum visited individual plants more frequently than C. plutellae before it left the patch, and stung hosts at more than twice the rate of C. plutellae. 7. The results indicated that the host‐location strategies employed by D. semiclausum were adapted better to the host's defensive behaviour, and thus it was more effective at detecting and parasitising the host than was C. plutellae.  相似文献

The northern hairy-nosed (NHN) wombat is perhaps Australia's most endangered mammal. Being fossorial and nocturnal as well as rare, NHN wombats are difficult to observe in the wild. Hence little is known of their social biology, such as their mating and dispersal systems. A hypothesis has been advanced that adult females of the species disperse post-breeding, leaving their young to inhabit the natal burrow. Female-biased dispersal is expected to result in higher relatedness amongst males in a burrow cluster than amongst females in a burrow cluster. The usefulness of a panel of microsatellite markers in estimating the relatedness structure, and in reconstructing pedigrees for, the sole known population of NHN wombats was assessed. Microsatellite genotypes at eight or nine loci were obtained from 58 of the 85 known individuals, and used to estimate pairwise individual relatedness using Queller & Goodnight's (1989) RELATEDNESS 4.2. Our analysis gave the unexpected result that both males and females were significantly more closely related to their same-sex burrow cluster mates than random, while opposite-sex animals sharing burrows were only slightly (nonsignificantly) more related than random. This raises the possibility of dispersal patterns which lead to association of same-sex relatives. The observed relatedness structure is not expected to make likely a high incidence of inbred matings, as close relatives of the opposite sex are not significantly associated in space. Parentage analysis was attempted using genetic exclusion and LOD likelihood ratios, but proved difficult because of low genetic variation, incomplete sampling of potential parents, and paucity of ecological data such as known mother/offspring pairs and ages of individuals.  相似文献

Wombats are large, fossorial, herbivorous marsupials exhibiting physical and behavioural characteristics indicative of extreme energy conservation. Previous energetics studies have been limited to their basal metabolism under laboratory conditions; little is known of the energetics of free-living wombats. We measured seasonal field metabolic rates (FMR) and water fluxes in the three species of free-living wombat using the doubly labelled water technique, to further investigate the extent of energy conservation in the Vombatidae. Measurements were taken during the wet and dry annual extremes of their characteristically harsh environments, which corresponded to seasonal extremes of food and water availability. Seasonal FMRs for all wombat species were lower than that recorded for other marsupials and well below that predicted for herbivorous mammals. Dry-season FMR of Lasiorhinus kreftii was 40% of that predicted for a mammal. Wombats maintained energy balance during the poor season by reducing FMR to about half that of the good season. Water flux rates during the dry season for the arid-adapted Lasiorhinus are amongst the lowest recorded for mammals, being only 25% of that predicted for a similarly sized herbivorous mammal. These low water flux rates enable wombats in semi-arid areas to maintain water balance without drinking. Estimated food and nitrogen intake rates were also low. We conclude that the energetically frugal lifestyle of the Vombatidae is amongst the most extreme for mammals.  相似文献

Understanding the relationship between disease transmission and host density is essential for predicting disease spread and control. Using long-term data on sarcoptic mange in a red fox Vulpes vulpes population, we tested long-held assumptions of density- and frequency-dependent direct disease transmission. We also assessed the role of indirect transmission. Contrary to assumptions typical of epidemiological models, mange dynamics are better explained by frequency-dependent disease transmission than by density-dependent transmission in this canid. We found no support for indirect transmission. We present the first estimates of R0 and age-specific transmission coefficients for mange in foxes. These parameters are important for managing this poorly understood but highly contagious and economically damaging disease.  相似文献

1. Epidemiological theory predicts that vector preference for hosts differing in infection status (i.e. healthy or infected) affects disease dynamics. 2. Numerous studies have documented strong vector preference for or discrimination against infected hosts. However, the significance of these behaviours for pathogen transmission and spread has been poorly described. 3. We conducted a series of choice assays to evaluate orientation preference, feeding preference, and movement rates of an important group of vectors, the sharpshooter leafhoppers, based on host infection status for the generalist plant pathogen, Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al. 4. Sharpshooters did not discriminate between healthy versus infected‐but‐asymptomatic grapevines, but they oriented preferentially to healthy grapevines more frequently than either symptomatic vines or those artificially coloured to mimic disease symptoms. 5. In a field trial three sharpshooter species showed different movement rates and preferences for feeding site, but all species exhibited similar and significant preference for healthy hosts. 6. Although there was no significant difference in acquisition efficiency among vector species, those individuals that spent more time on healthy hosts tended to be less likely to acquire the pathogen. 7. These results suggest that sharpshooters discriminate against infected grapevines, which are likely to be of poorer quality, with visual cues playing a role in host selection. Preference by these vectors may affect pathogen acquisition, which could affect disease spread in the field.  相似文献

We studied the behaviors of four species of sympatric fiddler crabs on Kaledupa Island, Indonesia. Species differences in activity level, grooming, burrowing and feeding were related to their habitat and food. Uca chlorophthalmus, living in muddy mangrove areas, were inactive and spent most of the time feeding in place. Females fed 50% faster than males and spent more time feeding. U. vocans was the dominant species at the beach in silty sand and was very active. Its feeding rate was about twice that of the former species, females fed more rapidly than males, and many crabs of both sexes fed in droves at the water’s edge during ebb tides. During ebb tides, they spent most of their time feeding, while at flood tide they engaged in a greater variety of activities, including burrow maintenance. They frequently walked while feeding and interacted aggressively. U. tetragonon lived in a pebbly band along one edge of the beach, by a quay. Their feeding rate was comparable in both sexes and slower than that of U. vocans; they fed largely on filamentous algae growing on the quay, which provides better food, and fed faster during flood tide than ebb tide. They spent more time in waving and other sex-related activities, and were seldom aggressive, except during the week of the full moon. Burrowing activities included placing excavated mud balls some distance away from their burrows and re-arranging them. U. dussumieri inhabited the other end of the beach in muddier substrate. They did not have sex differences in feeding rates and their rate of scooping food into their mouths was slow, but feeding claws made multiple pinches of the substrate, thus accumulating more material in each clawful of food.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti feeding on chickens infected with Plasmodium gallinaceum take less blood and lay fewer eggs than those feeding on uninfected hosts. Both activities show an inverse correlation with the degree of parasitemia. Mosquitoes feeding on infected chickens ingest blood in amounts directly proportional to the length of time spent on the hosts, whereas there is no relationship between host contact and blood meal size for mosquitoes feeding on uninfected hosts. Feeding and probing choice experiments demonstrate that infected chickens are less attractive to Aedes aegypti than uninfected chickens.  相似文献

Burrows of the northern hairy-nosed wombat were arranged in loose clusters, each of which was used in common by a group of up to 10 wombats. However, individual wombats rarely used the same burrows on the same days and feeding ranges tended to be separate within each sex. The incidence of breeding dispersal among females was quite high (at least 50%); dispersal distances ranged up to almost the full extent of the population's range. Dispersal by adult males was rare, and no juvenile males were observed to disperse.  相似文献

Although ticks are known to exhibit preferences among host species, there is little evidence that ticks select hosts within a species based on physiological condition. It may be beneficial for ticks to choose hosts that are easier to feed upon if the ticks can perceive indicative chemical or other signals from the host. For example, if ticks can detect host hematocrit they may choose hosts with high hematocrit, facilitating a faster blood meal. It may similarly be adaptive for ticks to avoid anemic hosts because it may be difficult for them to obtain an adequate meal and feeding duration may be extended. We tested the hypothesis that larval western black-legged ticks (Ixodes pacificus) detect host hematocrit using external cues and choose healthy over anemic hosts, allowing them to feed more quickly. We presented groups of larval ticks with pairs of healthy and anemic male western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis), allowed them to select a host, and measured the feeding duration of the ticks. We found that the ticks did not exhibit a statistically significant preference for healthy over anemic lizards, but that the ticks fed to repletion significantly faster on healthy hosts than on anemic hosts. Larval ticks may not be able to detect external cues indicating the health of the host, at least not in terms of their hematocrit. The extended feeding duration likely reflects the extra time needed for the ticks to concentrate the blood meal of their anemic hosts.  相似文献

Lifetime fitness is directly influenced by the decision to use resources for either current or future reproduction. Thus, females should weigh the costs and benefits of each reproductive opportunity and allocate resources accordingly. Here, we explore decision-making and the time spent handling hosts of different instars in the parasitoid Haplogonatopus hernandezae, which uses a single planthopper host to either oviposit (i.e., current reproduction) or feed (i.e., future reproduction). Our results indicate that manipulation time in attacks that led to either oviposition and feeding increased with host instar and size. Consequently, attacks were less successful on older host instars than younger ones. Similarly, attack and handling time during oviposition was greater when manipulating fifth instar nymphs compared to younger ones, but oviposition time was similar. Surprisingly, host grasping by the chelate forelegs differed between oviposition and feeding events, and the specific chelate foreleg morphology of H. hernandezae facilitates the specific grasp of the clypeus and gena of the host. We also link this previously undescribed host grasping and differential handling behavior in this species to the final decision to oviposit or feed. Given the differences in handling time and effort among different host instars, we found that older hosts were more often chosen for consumption than younger hosts, and younger hosts were chosen more often for oviposition. Our study suggests that the tradeoff between current and future benefits is influenced by the investment in handling hosts of different instars, and the assessment of host suitability for successful offspring survival.  相似文献

2010年5—11月,在古尔班通古特沙漠南部采用焦点动物取样法研究了大沙鼠(Rhombomys opimus)的昼间洞道利用机制(地面活动强度、进洞频率)以及地面行为时间分配。结果表明:大沙鼠在春夏秋三季地面活动时间占总观察时间的77.62%、66.13%和80.93%,进洞频率分别为0.50、0.31和0.19次.min-1,地面活动强度和进洞频率均具有明显的季节性变化;在其地面行为中,摄食是大沙鼠任一季节最主要的行为,不同季节摄食比例均超过50%;储食是大沙鼠春季两秋两季次重要的行为,其时间比例分别达到了17.19%和25.46%;夏季大沙鼠修饰行为比例明显升高(27.78%),而储食行为比例明显下降(7.1%)。本研究结果说明,食物因子是促使大沙鼠进行地面活动的重要因素之一;另外,温度、生理周期、捕食风险可影响大沙鼠地面活动强度、进洞频率以及地面行为时间分配。  相似文献

Debate over the origins of burrowing in the Vombatidae has continued since the discovery of the remains of the largest of all wombats, Phascolonus gigas, in the nineteenth century. In this paper, we argue that the largest of the ancestors of extant wombats did not burrow due to physical and physiological limitations of burrows. Further, we suggest that the burrowing characteristics of the extant wombats were derived from an ancestor of similar body size (20–40 kg) that is presently not represented in the fossil record.  相似文献
