选用郑单958(ZD958)和先玉335(XY335)为试验材料,在砂培和大田条件下设置3、5、7和9 cm 4个播种深度,并在大田条件下以不同播种深度混播作为对照(CK),研究播种深度对夏玉米幼苗性状和根系特性的影响.结果表明: 随着播种深度的增加,夏玉米的出苗率下降,出苗时间延长.ZD958和XY335播深9 cm的出苗率较3 cm的分别降低9.4%和11.8%,出苗时间较3 cm的均延长1.5 d.随着播种深度的增加,幼苗长度及幼苗整齐度显著降低,中胚轴长度显著增加,胚芽鞘长度差异不显著;初生胚根长度逐渐减小,次生胚根总长度逐渐增加,总根长度差异不显著;幼苗与中胚轴的总干质量增加,总根干质量差异不显著.随播种深度的增加,种子萌发时幼苗各部位可溶性糖含量增加,营养物质消耗量增加,幼苗根系生长速度增加,根系活力降低,总节根数及节根层数增加.播深增加后出苗率及幼苗活力的降低导致收获穗数的显著降低,最终影响产量形成.此外,播深一致有利于群体整齐度的提高和群体性状的改善,从而提高产量.  相似文献

Seedling emergence and subsequent survival and growth are vital for natural forest restoration or plantation establishment by means of seeds. Such information is lacking for the African bamboo species. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse to evaluate the influence of seed orientation and sowing depth of the lowland bamboo Oxytenanthera abyssinica on seedling emergence, survival and growth. A randomised complete block design was used. Seedling emergence in the seed orientation experiment followed the order embryo-end-up>lay-flat>embryo-end-down. Survival rate after 62 days decreased in the order lay-flat>embryo-end-down>embryo-end-up. Mean seedling height and number of leaves per seedling followed a similar pattern. Seeds sown on top of the soil surface and at 2.5 mm depth achieved faster and higher seedling emergence than those sown at 5 and 10 mm depths. However, mean seedling height and number of leaves per seedling were higher in 5 and 2.5 mm depths than surface and 10 mm depths. There were significant quadratic relationships between sowing depth and seedling height (p=0.034) as well as number of leaves per seedling (p=0.032), both peaking around 5 mm soil depth. Lay-flat orientation, which is the most frequent position in broadcast sowing, is recommended at 5 mm sowing depth for the lowland bamboo based on overall performance in seedling emergence, survival and growth.  相似文献

Morphological and histological studies were made on the mesocotyl and the emergence of seedlings of a nondormant strain (CS40) of wild oats (Avena fatua L.). The elongation of the mesocotyl was primarily responsible for the emergence of seedlings from deeper levels of soil. The mesocotyl of the seedling is here interpreted as the hypocotyl. The functionally suctorial scutellum together with coleoptile constitutes the first cotyledon and the first true-leaf is regarded as the second cotyledon. The development of tillers from scutellar and first-leaf buds depends on the depth at which level the seeds (caryopses) germinated and the seedlings emerged above the soil surface. The first-leaf axillary buds, regradless of depths, develop into dominant tillers. The scutellar buds, especially at greater depths, remain inhibited. At shallower levels, however, they develop into tillers. The scutellar buds, at deeper levels, behave as reserve ramets which feature adds to the success of the species as a weed in the agricultural prairies.  相似文献

The mesocotyl is an embryonic organ present in Poaceae that plays an important role in seedling emergence. The elongation of this first internode contributes decisively to the coleoptile reaching the soil surface. This study examines the process of mesocotyl elongation under controlled conditions in three caryopsis collection sites of Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. originating from Spain (Barcelona and Girona) and Argentina that may have two patterns of germination: radicular or coleoptilar. The frequencies of the two germination patterns varied significantly depending on the origin. Light inhibited the elongation of the mesocotyl drastically, resulting in maximum lengths of 3.5 mm, while in darkness the maximum length was 57 mm. The time-course evolution displayed under dark conditions was quite similar for all sites of origin and both germination patterns; the growth rate ranged from 0.23 to 0.30 mm h? 1. Within localities, caryopses with a coleoptilar pattern of germination showed a lower growth rate than those with a radicular one.  相似文献

Seeds of 201 species of 83 genera in the Gramineae were collected from the tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, and the temperate region of China. Pure live seeds of each species were sown in plastic pots, which were filled with the mixture of sand and bits of rotted wood (4:1). Seeded pots were kept in greenhouse at temperature of 20—25°C , and were arranged at random with four replications in each of the two treatments of sowing depth, 10 mm and 0 mm. The seedlings were taken as samples for examining 60 morphological and microscopic characters (Appendix), when they grew to the three-leaved stage. Cluster analysis was made using 60 seedling characters with the 201 species as OTUs. As a result, four clusters are recognized as follows. Cluster 1. Festucoid: The group consisted of all the species of the subfamily Festucoideae, the species of the genera Stipa, Achnatherum, Danthonia and Aristida in the subfamily Arundinoideae, and those of the genus Microlaena in the subfamily Bambusoideae. The seedling mesocotyl elongated or not, but not elongated when grew under light. Mesocotyl roots absent. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots or coleoptile node roots dominant. The first leaf narrowly linear, erect, acute at the apex, twisting clockwise or counterclockwise; blade and sheath 3—5-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 61.65 on an average; The second and third leaves narrowly linear, acute or acuminate at the apex. The coleoptile 13.04mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the third leaf emerged. Cluster 2. Panicoid: All the species of the subfamily Panicoideae, the species of the genera Eriachne and Monachather in the subfamily Arundinoideae, and the genus Enneapogon in the subfamily Eragrostidoideae were included in this group. The seedling mesocotyl elongated, even if growing under light. Mesocotyl roots present and dominant. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots absent. The first leaf oblong-lanceolate, oblong-oblanceolate or spathulate, ascendent or horizontal, acuminate or obtuse at apex, not twisting; blade and sheath over 7-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 8.95 on an average. The second and third leaves linear-lanceolate, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex. Coleoptile 5.29mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the fifth leaf emerged. Cluster 3. Bambusoideae: This group included the species in the subfamily Bambusoideae except those in the genus Microlaena. The first and second leaves without blade in the supertribe Bambusanae. The mesocotyl not elongated. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots, and coleoptile node roots completely absent, only primary root developed. The mesocotyl elongated, mesocotyl roots absent and coleoptile roots dominant in the supertribe Oryzanae. The blade of the first leaf suppresed, but the second and third leaves both with blade and sheath. Cluster 4. Eragrostidoid: The cluster contained the species in the subfamily Eragrostidoideae except those in the genus Enneapogon. The seedling mesocotyl elongated, but not elongated when grew under light. The mesocotyl roots mostly absent, while the coleoptile node roots dominant. The first leaf linear, almost ascendent, acute at the apex, not twisting, blade and sheath 5—7 (9)-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 11.69 on an average. The second and third leaves linear, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, acuminate at the apex. The coleoptile 2.60 mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the fifth leaf emerged. The species of the subfamily Arundinoideae were divided into four clusters. The results showed that the Arundinoideae could be considered as primitive member of the family, from which the subfamilies Panicoideae, Eragrostidoideae and Festucoideae are derived and specialized. With exception of a few cases, species in a genus were generally clustered into one unit and grouped into a subcluster unit. Seedling characters, like other taxonomic characters, are of importanttaxonomic significance, and could be used in classification of the Gramineae.  相似文献

飞播固沙作为一项快速而有效的现代化治沙措施,已成为毛乌素沙地植被恢复与重建的重要手段。但此项技术仍存在一些问题,如飞播后成苗率较低等。以毛乌素沙地优势植物柠条(Caragana korshinskii)、羊柴(Hedysarum laeve)、油蒿(Artemisia ordosica)与籽蒿(Artemisia sphaerocephala)为研究对象,人工控制7个沙埋深度和9个水分梯度,研究4种植物种子萌发和幼苗出土对沙埋和单次供水的响应,阐明多大的单次降雨才能保证种子萌发与幼苗出土及出土幼苗的维持时间。结果表明,对于柠条和羊柴质量相对较大的种子而言.种子主要在供水量10.20mm,埋藏深度为0.5.2cm的条件下出苗,但在埋藏深度为5cm时这两个物种仍有少量种子能够出苗;而对于油蒿和籽蒿质量相对较小的种子而言,种子主要在供水量10.20mm,埋藏深度为0.5cm时出苗,当埋藏深度为1.5cm和2cm时不能顺利出苗。沙埋深度0.5cm条件下,4个物种具有最高的出苗率和出苗速率。在试验期内(30d),柠条、羊柴和油蒿出土幼苗分别在单次供水量为5、7.5mm和7.5mm时全部死亡,在单次供水量高于15mm时4个种的出土幼苗死亡率大多低于50%,且随供水量的增加出土幼苗死亡率降低。结合毛乌素沙地降雨特点与本次实验结果,0.5cm的沙埋及7.5mm以上的单次降雨是上述4种植物自然条件下出苗较好的重要条件。  相似文献

On the beach strand, seedlings of Cakile edentula, Elymus canadensis, and Corispermum hyssopifolium emerged from mean depths of 3.4, 3.5 and 3.0 cm, respectively. The frequency distribution of the depth of seedling emergence was 1) significantly leptokurtic for C. edentula and slightly platykurtic (not significant) for C. hyssopifolium and E. canadensis, and 2) significantly skewed to the right for C. edentula and E. canadensis but not for C. hyssopifolium. The total germination was not influenced by the burial of seeds at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cm depths except in Ammophila breviligulata in which the germination decreased with increasing depth of burial. The rate of emergence and total emergence decreased with increased sowing depth for all four plant species. Species with larger seeds emerged from deeper burial treatments than those with small seeds. The order of ED50 (the planting depth from which 50% of the seedlings emerged) and EDmax (the maximum depth from which a seedling emerged) was C. edentula (upper seeds) > E. canadensis > C. edentula (lower seeds) ≖ C. hyssopifolium > A. breviligulata and it coincided with weight per seed.  相似文献

The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf. 该文在玻璃温室内的遮阴环境下,采用盆播方法研究了辽东栎种子特征(大小和种皮)和播种深度(0、3、6、10 cm)对种子萌发和幼苗生长的影响。结果表明:(1)辽东栎大种子萌发率、萌发速率、萌发值和萌发指数在所有播种深度均高于小种子。其中非去皮种子萌发率、萌发速率和萌发指数在0 cm播种深度的不同大小种子间差异显著,去皮种子所有萌发参数在6和10 cm播种深度的不同大小种子间均差异显著;去皮可促进大种子萌发,但抑制小种子萌发;不同大小种子所有萌发参数均在0 cm播种深度最大,在10cm播种深度最小。(2)不论有无种皮,大种子萌发幼苗的叶片数、单株叶面积、总干物质质量和根冠比在所有播种深度均大于小种子萌发幼苗;去皮种子萌发幼苗的株高、基径、叶片数、单株叶面积和总干物质质量在所有播种深度均不同程度地小于非去皮种子萌发幼苗,但前者根冠比在0、3、6 cm播种深度大于后者;随着播种深度增大,幼苗株高、叶片数、单株叶面积、总干物质质量和根冠比等生长参数均呈减小趋势,但基径随播种深度增大而增大。  相似文献

The effects of differential soil crusting, as achieved by varying the raindrop size, and depth of sowing on seedling emergence of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) and pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides L.) were investigated. Three drop diameters: 2.75, 1.65 and 0.93 mm and four depths of sowing: 2, 4, 6, and 8 cm were studied. Mean time of emergence increased with increase in raindrop size and depth of sowing. Crops differed in their emergence capacity under adverse soil conditions from delay in the emergence of chickpea to complete failure in the case of pigeonpea. Pearl millet was not significantly affected by drop size but was found to be sensitive to depths beyond 4 cm. Within the chickpea crop, the variety H 208 was observed to have better emergence qualities than Pusa 209. Other parameters like epicotyl diameter, swelling index, and the area of crust broken by the emerging seedling were measured.  相似文献

种子出苗对种间关系和群落组成具有重要影响。种内研究表明种子质量与种子出苗之间存在正相关关系, 但这种关系很少在物种水平进行检验, 尤其是在不同土壤埋藏深度条件下。为此, 该文开展了一个因子实验(10种植物和5种土埋深度(0、1、2、4和8 cm))以检验是否在不同土层中“种子质量-种子出苗之间的正相关关系”始终存在。该文在不同土埋深度播种50粒种子(重复5次), 连续30天观测种子出苗, 并提出了一个耐土埋性指标。结果表明: (1) 10种植物的最适出苗深度为0-2 cm土层; 6种植物的最大出苗率发生在1 cm土埋深度。(2)种子质量与耐土埋性之间存在显著的正相关关系, 种子质量越大耐土埋性越强, 适宜出苗的土层越深。(3)当土层较深(4或8 cm)时, 种子出苗率和持续出苗时间随种子质量增加而增大, 种子出苗率与持续出苗时间之间存在正相关关系; 这些关系在较浅土层(0、1或2 cm)并不存在。这些结果有助于进一步理解种子大小与出苗之间的关系, 以及种子出苗过程中的策略。  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Air seeding has long been regarded as a quick and successful measure for vegetation rehabilitation in China. However, seedling emergence of often-used species including Agriophyllum squarrosum, Artemisia sphaerocephala, Artemisia ordosica, Hedysarum fruticosum, Caragana korshinskii and Medicago sativa is low. Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions to study the effects of sowing depth and water supply on seedling emergence, in order to understand the requirements for increasing seedling emergence. METHODS: Seeds were exposed to different environments of burial and water supply regimes in PVC pots (7 cm in diameter and 11 cm in height) under the same light intensity and alternating temperature regimes in a growth chamber. KEY RESULTS: Seedlings of three species (Agriophyllum squarrosum, Artemisia sphaerocephala, Artemisia ordosica) with relatively light seeds emerged well at a 0.5 cm sowing depth under a 7.5 and 10 mm water supply regime. However, few seedlings of these species emerged when the sowing depth was over 1 cm or when water supply was 5 mm. Seedlings of Caragana korshinskii, Hedysarum fruticosum and Medicago sativa emerged from sowing depths of 0.5-4 cm, 0.5-3 cm, and 0.5-4 cm, respectively, under both 7.5 and 10 mm water supply regimes. Under a 5 mm water supply regime, seedlings of these species also emerged at over 1 cm sowing depth. Seeds of all six species sown on the surface of sand did not germinate, and seedlings did not emerge when they were sown at depths greater than 6 cm. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these experiments, a 0.5 cm sowing depth resulted in the highest seedling emergence and it is concluded that this is the optimal sowing depth for seedling emergence of all six species.  相似文献

Seedling emergence of 12 selected northern jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Smith) forest species were investigated to assist Alcoa of Australia Ltd. in maximizing the establishment of topsoil species in rehabilitated bauxite mining sites. The species, which encompassed a range of seed weights (0.024 mg to 87 mg), plant families, seed-storage types, life forms, and germination requirements, were placed on the soil surface and at depths of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 cm under controlled conditions in a glasshouse. Ability to emerge from deep burial was found to depend on seed size for species that annually release their seed to the topsoil but not for species that store their seed on the plant. All selected species were capable of emerging from 2 cm depth of burial, but eight of the 12 species were either unable to emerge from 5 cm or showed a significant reduction in emergence from 5 cm depth of burial compared to optimally buried seed. This group included two small-seeded species, Stylidium calcaratum and Chamaescilla corymbosa; the major forest dominant, Eucalyptus marginata; the serotinous canopy-borne seed of Hakea amplexicaulis; and the wind-dispersed seed of Xanthorrhoea gracilis. A few seeds of the legume species Kennedia coccinea, Acacia pulchella, and Bossiaea aquifolium established seedlings from depths of 15 cm. Currently, Alcoa removes the upper 15 cm of topsoil separately from the underlying soil prior to the commencement of mining. This topsoil is respread at a similar depth following mining as part of the rehabilitation procedure. It is recommended that Alcoa continue to strip topsoil to a depth of 15 cm but investigate the option of re-spreading topsoil onto rehabilitated pits at a shallower depth to maximize establishment via the soil seed bank.  相似文献

Two isolates of cocksfoot mild mosaic virus obtained from cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) in Scotland differed in symptomatology, and apparently in host range, from isolates obtained in Germany and Wales. They were serologically more closely related to a Dutch isolate from cocksfoot, and to a Scottish isolate from timothy (Phleum pratense), than was the German isolate from cocksfoot. The Scottish isolate from timothy was somewhat more virulent than, but serologically closely related to a Welsh isolate from timothy. Particles of Scottish isolates from cocksfoot and timothy were best preserved for electron microscopy by fixation with osmium tetroxide. In 1.0 m KCl or 0.01 m ethylene diamine tetraacetate they were stable at pH 5.2–5.3 but unstable above pH 7; they were disrupted by 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate. The particles contained major and minor RNA components of mol. wt c. 1.5. 106(RNA-1) and 0.5. 106(RNA-2) respectively, together with polydisperse RNA of intermediate mol. wt and protein of mol. wt c. 27 000. In CsCl gradients, major and minor nucleoprotein components of density 1.39 and 1.38 g/ml respectively were distinguished. The less dense particles contained a larger proportion of intermediate-sized RNA molecules and of RNA- 2 , and a smaller proportion of RNA- 1 , than did the denser particles. Particles seem to contain either RNA-1 or various combinations of smaller RNA molecules. Despite the differences in antigenic constitution, symptomatology and particle stability between virus isolates obtained from cocksfoot and timothy in different countries, these isolates seem sufficiently similar to be considered one virus.  相似文献

We develop a geometric model predicting that maximum seedling emergence depth should scale as the cube root of seed weight. We tested the prediction by planting seeds from 17 species ranging in weight from 0.1 to 100 mg at a variety of depths in a sand medium. The species were spread across 16 genera and 13 families, all occurring in fire-prone fynbos shrublands of South Africa. Maximum emergence depth was found to scale allometrically with seed weight with an exponent of 0.334, close to the predicted value. We used the allometry to predict recruitment response to experimentally simulated variation in fire intensity. Five species with small (<2 mg) seeds and five with large (>10 mg) seeds were planted at ≤20-mm and 40-mm depths and exposed to low and high heat treatments and a control. The allometric equation predicted that species with large seeds would be able to emerge from a depth of 40 mm but those with small seeds would not. Only 1% of 481 seedlings from small-seeded species emerged from the 40-mm planting compared with 40% of 626 seedlings from the large-seeded group. The simulated fire treatments killed seeds in shallow, but not deeper, soil layers. At simulated high fire intensities, seedling emergence was poor in small-seeded species but good in large-seeded species, with most seedlings emerging from the 40-mm planting depth. Seed size could be a useful general predictor of recruitment success under different fire intensities in this system. Field, laboratory and glasshouse experiments were carried out to measure effects of seed treatments with captan or thiram on growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Field-sown captan- or thiram-treated seed gave twice as many seedlings as untreated seed. Spaced plants growing from fungicide-treated seed produced almost 6 times more dry matter 16 weeks after sowing than those from untreated seed. This effect, though diminishing with time, was still apparent more than a year after sowing. Fungicides in sterile agar growth medium were phytotoxic to seedlings at concentrations of 10μg/ml and greater. Seedlings grown from treated seeds sown from 5 to 15 mm away from developing colonies of the virulent seedling pathogenFusarium oxysporum Schlecht. were more than 4 times larger than those grown from untreated seeds. Captan-treated seed sown into pots containing field soil produced more and larger seedlings than untreated seed. Methyl bromide fumigation of the same soil also increased both number and size of seedlings. Fungicidal, rather than direct chemical effects, at early stages of seedling growth, account for increased growth of plants from fungicide-treated seed.  相似文献

Sediment deposition is a common phenomenon in the estuary area. Pot control experiments were conducted to evaluate the interaction effects of sediment burial depth and salt stress on the seed germination and early seedling growth of Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall., an pioneer species of tidal wetland near the Yellow River Delta. The results showed that the percentage of seedling emergence, seedling emergence rate, seedling height, branch number, shoot biomass and root biomass were all significantly affected by salt stress and sediment burial depth. While the interaction of salt and burial depth significantly influenced the branch number, leaf biomass, shoot biomass and total plant biomass. Only 5 cm burial depth without salt stress should 6.25 ± 3.61% seedlings emergence. With the increasing of sediment burial depth and salt stress, percentage of seedling emergence, seedling emergence rate and plant height decreased significantly. However, under the salt treatment of 0 and 1%, the branch number increased dramatically with the increasing of sediment burial depth from 0 to 3 cm. The ratio of leaf to total biomass increased with increasing of burial depth, on the contrary, the ratio of root to total biomass decreased. 0–1 cm sediment burial depth was proved the suitable depths for seed germination of S. salsa in the coastal wetland of the Yellow River Delta. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of how to improve the seedling establishment of S. salsa under the dynamic changes of sediment deposition and salinity in the coastal wetland of the Yellow River Delta.  相似文献

The green revolution was based on genetic modification of the gibberellin (GA) hormone system with “dwarfing” gene mutations that reduces GA signals, conferring shorter stature, thus enabling plant adaptation to modern farming conditions. Strong GA-related mutants with shorter stature often have reduced coleoptile length, discounting yield gain due to their unsatisfactory seedling emergence under drought conditions. Here we present gibberellin (GA) 3-oxidase1 (GA3ox1) as an alternative semi-dwarfing gene in barley that combines an optimal reduction in plant height without restricting coleoptile and seedling growth. Using large-scale field trials with an extensive collection of barley accessions, we showed that a natural GA3ox1 haplotype moderately reduced plant height by 5–10 cm. We used CRISPR/Cas9 technology, generated several novel GA3ox1 mutants and validated the function of GA3ox1. We showed that altered GA3ox1 activities changed the level of active GA isoforms and consequently increased coleoptile length by an average of 8.2 mm, which could provide essential adaptation to maintain yield under climate change. We revealed that CRISPR/Cas9-induced GA3ox1 mutations increased seed dormancy to an ideal level that could benefit the malting industry. We conclude that selecting HvGA3ox1 alleles offers a new opportunity for developing barley varieties with optimal stature, longer coleoptile and additional agronomic traits.  相似文献

The effect of self-pollination compared with open-pollination on leek seed weight, and subsequent seedling emergence and growth were observed for two years of seed production. Open-pollination gave higher mean seed weights and lower seedling losses during plant establishment than self-pollination. Depending upon the year, the individual plant and pollination method, between 2. 4 and 56.6% of the variation in seedling weight c. 4–5 wk after sowing under controlled conditions was accounted for by differences in seed weight and time of seedling emergence. In 1984 but not 1983, a greater proportion of the variation in seedling weight was accounted for by seed weight and time of seedling emergence in open than self-pollinated seeds.  相似文献

To elucidate the seed–seedling conflict and the process of habitat choices during the expansion of S. alterniflora, densities of seeds and seedlings in three different habitats, foreland, Spartina meadow, and canopy gap patch, were measured. Statistical analyses of these measurements were performed to investigate the interaction between seeds or seedlings and environmental factors. Also, the process of habitat choice during the expansion of S. alterniflora was explored. The results show that, in the upper soil seed bank (0–5 cm), both the ratio of germinated seeds and the ratio of survival seedlings to total seeds do not differ significantly among the three habitats. However, in the lower soil seed bank (5–10 cm), these ratios differ significantly, suggesting the seed–seedling conflict of S. alterniflora generally occurs in the lower soil seed bank. The remarkable conflict occurs in the meadow habitat. Greenhouse experiments indicate that the germination rate decreases significantly and the mortality of pre-emerged seedlings increases significantly with increasing burial depth. The maximal burial depth of emerged seedlings varies with sediment types. Comparisons of burial depth effects on seedling height, mesocotyl length, coleoptile length, and root length show that the major responses of S. alterniflora pre-emerged seedlings to the burial treatments are the elongation of coleoptiles and mesocotyls, which favor seedling survival by enhancing aeration and accelerating emergence. These results suggest that burial treatment is a key selection factor, which leads to the seed–seedling conflict in recruitment of S. alterniflora population, and directly affects the expansion rate and the area infected by S. alterniflora.
