We describe the social organization, mating system, and social structure of a group of hybrid baboons (Papio anubis×P. hamadryas) in Ethiopia's Awash National Park. The group contained elements of both hamadryas and anubis societies. Overall, the group was a multimale, multifemale group that lacked cohesion and frequently formed subgroups. Subgroup formation was more strongly associated with predation risk than food availability. Although there were several hamadryas-like one-male units OMUs within the group, there was no evidence of a hamadryas multilevel society. Male and female members of OMUs were phenotypically more hamadryas-like than non-OMU individuals. The group contained substantial variation in the strength of inter- and intrasexual bonds: some females primarily groomed males while other females primarily groomed females, and the patterns were consistent with the OMU substructure. Despite some promiscuous mating, mating was biased towards the hamadryas condition for all group members. Additionally, rates of immigration and emigration were very low, and mean pairwise relatedness within the group is rising. For measures of intersexual bonding, all members of the group were intermediate between anubis and hamadryas individuals in less hybridized groups. The group was phenotypically and behaviorally more intermediate than it was in the 1970s (Sugawara, K. (1988). Recent data reveal that high-ranking males are unable to monopolize sexual access to fertile females, suggesting the potential evolutionary significance of alternative strategies across many taxa. We examined a well known behavior, “following” of a consortship by adult male olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis), that has received little empirical attention. Four consort takeover tactics have been suggested, for both follower and nonfollower males: takeover of an abandoned consort female, individual aggressive challenge to oust the consort male, coalitionary challenge to oust the consort male, or an opportunistic consort takeover relying on the consort male being distracted. We addressed the following questions: 1) How does the behavior of followers differ from nonfollowers? 2) Is following an effective alternative mating strategy? 3) What tactics do followers use to obtain access to fertile females? 4) Do dominance rank and female cycle day influence tactic expression? We studied two habituated groups of olive baboons from September 2009 to July 2010 in Kenya. Followers had a higher rate of agonistic interactions with the consort male and affiliative interactions with other followers. Overall, 74% of consort takeovers were executed by follower males of the targeted consortships. Each of the four consort takeover tactics were used by both follower and nonfollower males, although followers used the individual aggressive challenge and coalitionary challenge tactics more often than nonfollowers. Dominance rank, but not female cycle day, influenced the expression of consort takeover tactics. Our findings indicate that following provides males with sexual access to females.  相似文献

Preeclampsia is a common disease of pregnancy characterised by maternal hypertension and proteinuria. Abnormal placentation in early pregnancy and abnormal cytokine and anti-angiogenic factor expression are thought to contribute to the clinical syndrome of endothelial dysfunction evident in the second half of gestation. The mechanisms underlying both the placental pathology and its translation to the maternal clinical syndrome are not fully understood. A model of preeclampsia manifest by clinically evident endothelial dysfunction (increased blood pressure and proteinuria) was induced by administration of low-dose TNF-α for 2 weeks at mid-gestation in pregnant baboons (Papio hamadryas). Blood pressure was monitored continuously and remotely by intra-arterial radiotelemetry. Following TNF-α infusion, there was an increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and development of proteinuria in pregnant treated animals, but not in pregnant saline controls nor in non-pregnant TNF-α treated animals. The treated pregnant animals also developed elevated plasma soluble FMS-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1) and increased placental mRNA expression of sFLT-1 and soluble endoglin (sEng). These results clearly demonstrate that the cytokine TNF-α can induce the clinical and biochemical features of human preeclampsia. The results identify a link between cytokines, placental dysfunction and endothelial dysfunction resulting in a loss of maternal blood pressure control.  相似文献

To evaluate differences among poplar clones of various ploidies, 12 hybrid poplar clones (P. simonii × P. nigra) × (P. nigra × P. simonii) with different ploidies were used to study phenotypic variation in growth traits and photosynthetic characteristics. Analysis of variance showed remarkable differences for each of the investigated traits among these clones (P < 0.01). Coefficients of phenotypic variation (PCV) ranged from 2.38% to 56.71%, and repeatability ranged from 0.656 to 0.987. The Pn (photosynthetic rate) photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) curves of the 12 clones were S-shaped, but the Pn-ambient CO2 (Ca) curves were shaped like an inverted “V”. The stomatal conductance (Gs)-PPFD and transpiration rate (Tr)-PPFD curves had an upward tendency; however, with increasing PFFD, the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci)-PPFD curves had a downward tendency in all of the clones. The Pn-PPFD and Pn-Ca curves followed the pattern of a quadratic equation. The average light saturation point and light compensation point of the triploid clones were the highest and lowest, respectively, among the three types of clones. For Pn-Ca curves, diploid clones had a higher average CO2 saturation point and average CO2 compensation point compared with triploid and tetraploid clones. Correlation analyses indicated that all investigated traits were strongly correlated with each other. In future studies, molecular methods should be used to analyze poplar clones of different ploidies to improve our understanding of the growth and development mechanisms of polyploidy.  相似文献

N-(4-fluorobut-2-yn-1-yl)-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4'-tolyl)nortropane (PR04.MZ, 1) is a PET radioligand for the non-invasive exploration of the function of the cerebral dopamine transporter (DAT). A reliable automated process for routine production of the carbon-11 labelled analogue [(11)C]PR04.MZ ([(11)C]-1) has been developed using GMP compliant equipment. An adult female Papio anubis baboon was studied using a test-retest protocol with [(11)C]-1 in order to assess test-retest reliability, metabolism and CNS distribution profile of the tracer in non-human primates. Blood sampling was performed throughout the studies for determination of the free fraction in plasma (f(P)), plasma input functions and metabolic degradation of the radiotracer [(11)C]-1. Time-activity curves were derived for the putamen, the caudate nucleus, the ventral striatum, the midbrain and the cerebellum. Distribution volumes (V(T)) and non-displaceable binding potentials (BP(ND)) for various brain regions and the blood were obtained from kinetic modelling. [(11)C]-1 shows promising results as a selective marker of the presynaptic dopamine transporter. With the reliable visualisation of the extra-striatal dopaminergic neurons and no indication on labelled metabolites, the tracer provides excellent potential for translation into man.  相似文献

Eight multiparous non-lactating pregnant Holstein cows at 198 ± 35 d of gestation, weighing 608 ± 24 kg, were confined to wooden metabolic cages in an electric and magnetic field chamber with a 12:12 h light:dark cycle. Subarachnoidal catheters were installed 5 d before the activation of the electric and magnetic fields. The cows were exposed to electric and magnetic fields (60 Hz, 10 kV/m and 30 T) continuously except for the feeding and cleaning time for an average of 21.44 ± 1.4 h per day for a period of 30 d. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected on three consecutive days before an exposure period of 30 d, on the last 3 d of the exposure period, and for 3 d starting 5 d after the exposure period. The concentrations of -endorphin, tryptophan, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, homovanillic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol and quinolinic acid in cerebrospinal fluid were determined. There was a significant increase in quinolinic acid, and a trend towards an increase in tryptophan, findings consistent with a weakening of the blood-brain barrier due to exposure to the electric and magnetic fields.  相似文献

In the dry season, baboons traveled purposefully to spatially predictable foods that provided a relatively large number of grams per minute of preparation (e.g., economical foods), but not to predictable foods that merely accounted for a large proportion of feeding time (Pochron in Int J Primatol 22:773-785, 2001). In this paper, I examined the generality of those findings across seasons and applied the same methods to baboons eating a lush-season diet. I hypothesized that baboons should travel quickly and directly (i.e., purposefully) only to economical foods. The change in diet brought about by season provided an important comparison. In the lush season, none of the spatially predictable foods provided a relatively large number of grams per minute of preparation, so baboons were predicted to travel purposefully to no lush-season food. In short, baboons who traveled quickly and directly to some foods in the dry season were expected to use indirect and/or slow travel for all lush-season foods. The hypothesis was supported—baboons traveled quickly and directly to no lush-season food. Detailed comparisons between the dry- and lush-season characteristics of baobab fruit show that the foods economic value relative to other foods predicts concurrent fast and direct travel, or the lack thereof, in both seasons.This revised version was published online in April 2005 with corrections to the cover date of the issue.  相似文献

Radiographic and histological studies of baboon (Papio hamadryas, P. anubis) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) permanent tooth development have found that periods of molar crown mineralization overlap markedly in chimpanzees but are staggered in baboons. Here we test the hypothesis that these intertaxon differences in molar initiation are primarily due to the space available in the mandibles of each species for these teeth. This study includes radiographic, linear measurement, and three-dimensional (3D) coordinate landmark data taken from baboon (Papio anubis n=51) and great ape (Pan paniscus n=43, P. troglodytes n=60) mandibles and permanent molars across a broad developmental range for each taxon. Unexpectedly, 3D multivariate statistical shape analysis of the molar crypt, crown, and root data shows that all three species trajectories of molar row shape change are indistinguishable from each other. Qualitative analysis of these 3D data reveals subtle and inconclusive intergeneric differences in the space maintained between adjacent molars during growth. The space distal to each newly initiated molar is slightly greater in the baboon. Bivariate analyses comparing molar row and mandibular corpus proportions in Papio and Pan fail to show clear or consistent taxonomic differences in the ratio of space afforded developing molars in the alveolar bone. Thus, there is a poor correlation between mandibular proportion and both intermolar spacing and 3D molar development pattern. Contrary to earlier studies, these results suggest that pattern of molar crown initiation and temporal overlap of adjacent mineralizing crowns is not significantly different between Papio and Pan. This may be due in part to the inclusion here of not only 3D molar crown data but also 3D molar crypt data. This study strongly refutes the hypothesis that space available in the mandible directly underlies different times of permanent molar crown initiation between Papio and Pan.  相似文献

Transformation and loss of natural habitat to urbanization and agriculture provide new opportunities for primates to feed on anthropogenic food sources. Currently, mitigation strategies fail to target the individuals responsible for initiating and maintaining this behavior. As primates mainly forage on crops in groups, we investigate the crop-foraging behavior of a group of 40 chacma baboons in Zimbabwe from the perspective of collective movements, i.e., when a group of animals move together in the same direction, thus resulting in a change of location. We collected data on 110 crop-foraging events during 35 days in March–April 2014. We recorded baboon movement and behavior with a camcorder and obtained further information through video analysis. Most crop-foraging events involved less than 20% of the troop and lasted less than 3 min. Although crop-foraging parties were composed of all age–sex classes, adult females and particularly adult males initiated most crop-foraging events and made direct movements (without stopping on the road) more often than nonadult participants. Baboons made up to five successive attempts to crop forage in a single crop-foraging event. Neither the number of participants nor the success of the crop-foraging events increased over the successive attempts. Finally, crop-foraging events were more successful and more frequent in unguarded areas than in guarded areas. These results suggest that group members are highly synchronized and that crop-foraging is based on a collective decision such as classical foraging movements. In addition, the short duration of the crop-foraging events might prevent detection of baboons by farmers. The more frequent initiation of crop-foraging by adults compared to nonadults might be explained by greater energetic needs or a greater tendency of adults to take risks. These preliminary data can help inform long-term strategies for farmers to reduce crop losses to baboons, as guarding helps reduce damage but does not prevent it.  相似文献

Evidence from isozyme analyses indicates thatPotamogeton ×suecicus is the hybrid betweenP. pectinatus andP. filiformis. The hybrid appears to have arisen on several occasions. The isozyme profiles of this hybrid from the Rivers Wharfe and Ure in Yorkshire, south of the present limit of distribution ofP. filiformis, suggest that each population is a single clone; these clones may be relics from the Weichselian glacial period. Populations of the putative hybrid from the Rivers Tweed and Till are notP. ×suecicus but probably haveP. vaginatus andP. pectinatus as parents. If so, this is a remarkable example of a pondweed hybrid persisting vegetatively in an area outside the distributional range of one of its parents.  相似文献

Speciation is always a contentious and challenging issue following with the presence of gene flow. In Gossypium, there are many valuable resources and wild diploid cotton especially C and B genome species possess some excellent traits which cultivated cotton always lacks. In order to explore character transferring rule from wild cotton to upland tetraploid cotton, the [G. capitis-viridis × (G. hirsutum × G. australe)2] triple hybrid was synthesized by interspecies hybridization and chromosome doubling. Morphology comparisons were measured among this hybrid and its parents. It showed that trispecific hybrid F1 had some intermediate morphological characters like leaf style between its parents and some different characters from its parents, like crawl growth characteristics and two kind flower color. It is highly resistant to insects comparing with other cotton species by four year field investigation. By cytogenetic analysis, triple hybrid was further confirmed by meiosis behavior of pollen mother cells. Comparing with regular meiosis of its three parents, it was distinguished by the occurrence of polyads with various numbers of unbalanced microspores and finally generating various abnormal pollen grains. All this phenomenon results in the sterility of this hybrid. This hybrid was further identified by SSR marker from DNA molecular level. It showed that 98 selected polymorphism primers amplified effective bands in this hybrids and its parents. The genetic proportion of three parents in this hybrid is 47.8% from G. hirsutum, 14.3% from G. australe, 7.0% from G. capitis-viridis, and 30.9% recombination bands respectively. It was testified that wild genetic material has been transferred into cultivated cotton and this new germplasm can be incorporated into cotton breeding program.  相似文献

Allium fistulosum harbours a number of desirable agronomical traits for the breeding of onions. However exploitation of A. fistulosum for onion breeding via direct sexual hybridization is problematic. Therefore, we examined if a bridge cross, using A. roylei as a bridging species, might provide an alternative. By means of genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) we showed that each of the three parental genomes can be distinguished from the others in interspecific hybrids, suggesting that these genomes contain sufficiently different repetitive DNA families. We succeeded in carrying out multi-colour GISH to metaphase spreads of a first-generation bridge-cross individual [A. cepa× (A. fistulosum×A. roylei], which is composed of three parental genomes. Recombination between the genomes of A. fistulosum and A. roylei took place to a large extent: 7 recombined chromosomes were observed, and it could be shown that the proximal regions of the recombined A. fistulosum/A. roylei chromosomes belonged to the former, whereas the distal parts belonged to the latter. The high percentage of bound bivalent arms in metaphase I of pollen mother cells of a fertile bridge-cross individual suggests the introgression of A. fistulosum genes, mediated by A. roylei, into the genome of A. cepa. However, the presence of univalents reflects decreased pairing and recombination between the three genomes. Pollen fertility and pollen-tube growth of the first-generation bridge-cross individual seem to be sufficient to produce a second generation bridge-cross (A. cepa×first-generation bridge cross) progeny. Intergenomic F1 hybrids between L. auratum x L. henryi and their BC1 progeny were investigated through genomic in situ hybridization technique (GISH) to determine their potential value in lily breeding. We confirmed that F1 intergenomic hybrids possessed a set of chromosomes (x=12) from both parents and that flowers of the F1 auratum × henryi hybrid showed an intermediate morphological phenotype. Pollen size, viability and germination ability were measured through microscopic observations. F1 intergenomic hybrids produced a relevant frequency of 2n-gametes, which were successfully used to perform crosses with Oriental hybrids, resulting in the triploid Oriental Auratum Henryi (OAuH) hybrid. Twenty BC1 plants were generated by crossing between four different Oriental hybrid cultivars and F1 AuH hybrids using an in vitro embryo rescue technique, after which the genome constitution and chromosome composition were analyzed by GISH. All plants were triploid, showing 12 from female parents (diploid Oriental hybrid) and 24 from male parents (diploid F1 AuH hybrid). Overall, 16 out of 20 BC1 progeny possessed recombinant chromosomes with 1-5 crossover sites per plant. Cytological analysis of 20 BC1 plants by GISH verified that the occurrence of 2n pollen formation in all F1 AuH hybrids was derived from the FDR (first division restitution) mechanism, in which the genome composition of all BC1 plants possess 12 Oriental + 12 L. auratum + 12 L. henryi chromosomes. Allotriploids derived from the AuH hybrid were used as female for crossing with the diploid Oriental hybrid cultivar ''Sorbonne'' and considerable numbers of plants (0-6.5 plants per ovary) were only obtained when female OAuH (BC1) triploids were used. Taken together, the results of this study indicate that production and analysis of F1 AuH hybrids and their progeny through sexual polyploidization can be useful for efficient creation of important horticultural traits.  相似文献

We recently showed that aposporous apomixis, a form of gametophytic apomixis, is controlled by a single apospory-specific genomic region (ASGR) in both Pennisetum squamulatum and Cenchrus ciliaris. We present evidence that in a reciprocal cross between sexual pearl millet (P. glaucum) and an apomictic F1 (P. glaucum× P. squamulatum) the ASGR is not transmitted at the same rate. When pearl millet was used as the female parent and the apomictic genotype as the pollen donor, the ASGR was transmitted at a rate of 0.41 in a progeny of 57 plants, indicating a slight transmission ratio distortion. However, in a population of 52 rare sexual progenies characterized among a large progeny of a quasi-obligate apomict (an F1 hybrid of P. glaucum×P. squamulatum), the transmission rate of ASGR was only 0.12. This strong segregation distortion may have occurred at four different levels: (1) female meiosis, (2) during female gametophyte maturation, (3) upon fertilization with differential survival of embryos being a consequence of differential gene expression controlled by parent-of-origin specific effects (imprinting) and (4) at a later developmental stage of the embryo through an embryo/endosperm genetic incompatibility system. Pelargonium incarnatum is a tetraploid species (2n = 40) andP. patulum is diploid (2n = 22). A natural hybrid, collected at the same locality as the parent species, has 2n = 42 chromosomes. The meiosis of the hybrid is practically normal and its pollen fertility corresponds to that ofP. incarnatum. The flavonoid patterns of the parent species and the hybrid are very similar. The origin and phylogenetic implications of this intersectional hybrid are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of organic (Fe-EDTA and Fe-EDDHA) and inorganic (FeCl3) iron substances on rooting of the rootstock GF-677 (Prunus amygdalus × Prunus persica) in vitro was studied. Full rooting (100 %) was observed in explants nourished with Fe-EDDHA, while less rooting was found in the absence of iron or in the presence of FeCl3. On the contrary, no root formation was observed in explants nourished with Fe-EDTA, which showed extremely lower chlorophyll and high iron contents at the end of the experiment.
