Long-term changes in distribution and taxonomic composition of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes in two water storage reservoirs in The Netherlands were studied. A succession among the chironomid species was observed. In the last 10–15 years chironomid densities varied. Compared with other lakes chironomid densities were high. Densities of chironomids were higher in the littoral zone than in the profundal zone. The opposite was found for oligochaetes. Densities and composition of the chironomid fauna in the two reservoirs were similar.Procladius, Tanytarsus andHarnischia dominated at all depths. However, pupal exuviae samples showed some differences in chironomid taxonomic composition between the two reservoirs. Orthocladiinae, rarely found in bottom samples, abounded in pupal exuviae samples.  相似文献

Oligochaeta from profundal zones of Spanish reservoirs   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The profundal benthic fauna of 63 Spanish reservoirs was studied during 1972–75. Samples were taken in the deepest part of each reservoir with a modified Van Veen grab. The fauna was dominated by tubificid worms and chironomids. Sixteen species of Oligochaeta were found, two of them new for the Spanish fauna (Potamothrix heuscheri and Haber pyrenaicus). This was the first time H. pyrenaicus was found since the species was described in 1974 from the Pyrenees. Four species were frequent in the reservoirs (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Tubifex tubifex, L. claparedeianus and Dero digitata) but only the first two were abundant as mature individuals. Another interesting fact is the high abundance of immature animals in all samples, accounting for more than 80% of the total individuals examined. The geographical distribution of all species in Spain and their relationship with the typology of Spanish reservoirs are discussed. There seems to be a correlation between the throphic status of the reservoirs and the relative proportion of L. hoffmeisteri as compared to T. tubifex, the number of individuals of the first species increasing with water eutrophication.  相似文献

The sedimentary benthos of a series of shallow, eutrophicated lakes, the Norfolk Broads is, in general, low not only in number of species but unexpectedly in number of individuals. In two of the lakes, Hudsons Bay and Hoveton Great Broad, chironomids and oligochaetes dominated the fauna. Hudsons Bay has an extensive stand of water lilies (Nuphar lutea); Hoveton Great Broad does not. There were significant relationships between number of chironomids and of Potamothrix hammoniensis with organic content of the sediments, but these were due not to food availability but to the structure imparted to the otherwise fluid sediment by the organic matter. Sediment stabilised in plastic bowls developed much larger populations of oligochaetes than found in the unrestricted sediment. Protection of the community from fish predation resulted in a further major increase in numbers. Sediment stability and predation rather than food supply were the major determinants of these benthic populations.  相似文献

A technique, which uses environmental data to predict the macroinvertebrate fauna of running water sites, was used to investigate the response of faunal communities to flow regulation below a set of upland reservoirs in Great Britain. Five variables (total oxidised nitrogen, alkalinity, chloride, substratum type and site distance from stream source) were used to predict family presence and abundance at 30 regulated sites. The predictions were compared with the observed fauna recorded in samples taking in spring, summer and autumn. Of the 37 commonly occurring families 22 showed statistically significant trends. Twelve of these occurred at lower abundances than predicted and the effect was greatest in Heptageniidae, Simuliidae, Elminthidae, Perlodidae and Rhyacophilidae. Ten families were more more abundant than predicted and these included Polycentropodidae, Sphaeriidae, Sialidae and some groups of chironomids and oligochaetes. Fifteen families showed no significant trends. Most families showed little difference in the observed and expected frequency of occurrence in the 30 sites but Taeniopterygidae and Perlidae amongst others occurred at less than the expected number of sites and Hydridae, Prodiamesinae and Muscidae occurred more commonly than expected. These faunal responses are discussed in relation to environmental changes arising from flow regulation. The possible uses of the predictive technique in simulating and assessing the effects of regulation on downstream fauna are outlined.  相似文献

Highly specific environmental factors such as the presence of strongly mineralized water, oxygenation of the water down to 10 m, a low trophic status of the water and low organic matter content in the bottom sediments, were found in the studied post-exploitation Lake Piaseczno. Of the 42 macroinvertebrate taxa found, Oligochaeta (Tubificidae) and Chironomidae predominated. Almost exclusively ubiquitous species were found, except for some chironomid taxa recorded for the first time in Poland. The most diversified faunal communities occurred at 1 m water depth whereas the highest densities were found at 5 m. At the deepest points studied only oligochaetes and Chaoborus flavicans were found. There was no correlation between organic matter content and macrofauna densities. Differences in inhabitation at the studied transects could result from various environmental factors such as the degree of macrophyte cover and protection from the wind. Undisturbed transects overgrown by macrophytes had a similar community composition and higher faunal densities than those which were less protected.  相似文献

The horizontal distributions of the benthic stages of Chaoborus flavicans and Cyclops vicinus were studied in a eutrophic stratified lake in the Massif-Central (France) over one year, at 5 stations from the shore to the centre of the lake. Their distribution was investigated in relation to temperature, dissolved oxygen, sediment grain-size and other benthic organisms. The dominant taxa of the benthic fauna of Lake Aydat were dipterans, crustaceans and oligochaetes and their distributions were independent of the grain size. In contrast to chironomids which preferentially inhabited the sublittoral zone, chaoborids and crustaceans were more numerous in the profundal zone. The sediment-dwelling oligochaetes remained numerous in both zones, according to the season. The fourth copepodite stages of Cyclops and Tubifex are tolerant to low oxygen concentrations in contrast to the fourth instar larvae of Chaoborus whose distribution was positively correlated with oxygen. The guts of these dipteran larvae were found to be empty and we assumed that, in contrast to the chironomids and oligochaetes, the resting stages of Cyclops vicinus and the benthic stages of Chaoborus flavicans did not use benthic resources. The former are activated at the autumn overturn, while the latter escape from the bottom at the start of the spring oxygen depletion. This suggests that physical factors are largely responsible for their reactivation. Both animals suffered of the effects of starvation and probably lost weight. The reactivation of the copepod at the autumn overturn would be facilitated by fluid mechanical disturbance. In addition, after the spring overturn, a small increase in temperature near 4 °C would be a reliable environmental signal for the dipteran. Food limitation does not occur, invertebrate predation pressure seems to be negligible and the predation by fish on the macrobenthic fauna and by chance on the meiofauna, clearly remains limited in both space and time. Epibenthos of the southeastern Chukchi Sea, inclusive of Kotzebue Sound, was sampled in 1976. Crustaceans dominated abundance while echinoderms, mainly sea stars, dominated biomass. Spatial distribution of fauna was determined by cluster analysis. Scavenger-predators were dominant trophic groups, although suspension feeders dominated some regions. Unexpected high abundance and biomass under Alaska Coastal Water and factors related to presence and distribution of fauna are discussed. Dissimilarities between the benthic systems of the southeastern and northeastern Chukchi Seas are attributed to more complex water mass and flow patterns in the southern system. Entrained particulate organic carbon disperses through the area to support an abundant and apparently highly productive benthic fauna, which sustains resident and transient populations of demersal fishes and marine mammals. Epibenthos was sampled again in 1998 and, although little change was apparent in community composition, many taxa had higher abundance and biomass than 22 years earlier, a trend similar to findings observed in the northeastern Bering Sea.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

Human activities are radically changing natural land cover and increasing the delivery of soil, organic compounds, nutrients, toxic agrochemicals and other contaminants to aquatic ecosystems. The eutrophication of streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs and costal zones is one of the most important consequences of human activities. In this study we assessed the trophic status of 28 wadeable stream reaches of the Santa Lucía basin, an important economic region of Uruguay. We developed a Trophic State Index of Benthic Invertebrates (TSI-BI), the first of its kind for South American lotic systems. The methodological approach consisted of determining the ambient trophic gradient via canonical correspondence analysis based on the benthic invertebrate abundance matrix and an environmental variable matrix. The rescaled site scores served as environmental variables in the weighted averaging model (WA), to weight the benthic abundances and then find the optimum and tolerance of each of the sampled genus. These data were used to estimate the TSI-BI scores. These scores, in conjunction with the total phosphorus concentrations (TP), were used to group the study reaches when running a cluster analysis. The basic statistical parameters of the defined groups serve as an input to identify the threshold values of TP and TSI-BI corresponding with the different trophic states. The boundaries of TSI-BI and TP demarcating mesotrophic and eutrophic states were 8 and 71 μg/l, respectively, and can be considered the limits between impaired and less altered reaches. The results also indicated that the trophic status of the reaches is related to land use intensity. A change in land use management seems to be critical for the preservation of one of the most important water supply systems in Uruguay.  相似文献

A water quality survey was conducted from June, 1977 to May, 1978 on Pine Island and Little Pine Island Bayous of southeast Texas. Generally, good water quality was found. At four locations in the streams, brine seepage was indicated. This tended to improve stream conditions by decreasing turbidity and suspended solids. The benthic fauna was dominated by oligochaetes and chironomids. The greatest number of total and insect taxa occurred at the station with lowest turbidity. Below a sewage outfall the diversity decreased. However, stream conditions did not improve downstream due to increased turbidity. This research was funded in part by the National Park Service and Lamar University  相似文献

The life cycle of Thelohanellus hovorkai (Myxozoa), the causative agent of haemorrhagic thelohanellosis of carp Cyprinus carpio, involves the alternate oligochaete host Branchiura sowerbyi, which plays the role of vector in the parasite's transmission. Field investigations in carp farms suggested that oligochaete fauna were closely associated with the substrate type of the pond. The pond bottom in the enzootic farm consisted of clay soil and soft sediments comprised of organic mud, in which B. sowerbyi dominated in high densities, with a maximum of 5.6 ind. kg(-1) soil. In another case, in a carp farm with no previous history of the disease, the pond bottom was sandy soil, in which small-sized oligochaetes, composed mainly of Limnodrilus socialis, dominated. Laboratory studies on the substrate preference of oligochaetes proved that B. sowerbyi prefers mud to sand, whereas L. socialis has no tendency to substrate tropism. The delicate body surface of B. sowerbyi was subject to damage by rugged-edged sand particles, which inflicted severe injuries to the worms. Transmission experiments showed that L. socialis, which are non-susceptible to T. hovorkai, suppressed the production of T. hovorkai actinospores in B. sowerbyi in a mixed assemblage of oligochaetes. Field and experimental evidence in this study imply that substrate replacement in culture ponds might regulate the benthic oligochaete communities, resulting in minimization of the impact of haemorrhagic thelohanellosis. We propose that ecological control of oligochaete fauna by environmental management is a promising strategy against myxozoan diseases.  相似文献

We studied the distribution and seasonal abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates from July 1975 through September 1976 in a hypereutrophic lake in subtropical Florida. The benthic community was comprised principally of oligochaetes (56.1%), chironomids (37.1%), and chaoborids (5.7%). Numbers of taxa and mean densities correlated negatively with depth and positively with mean grain size of the substratum and dissolved oxygen concentration at the mud-water interface. Seasonal abundances and life history information obtained for the predominant species of Chironomidae (Polypedilum halterale, Glyptotendipes paripes, Chironomus crassicaudatus, Cryptochironomus fulvus, C. blarina, Cladotanytarsus sp., Procladius culiciformis, and Coelotanypus concinnus) indicated that all of these species are multivoltine with rapid generation times. Larval lengths of life at summer temperatures, 27–31 °C, ranged from 14–22 days indicating that sampling in subtropical lakes should be at short intervals (approximately 3 days) if the life cycles, ecology, and function of the components of the benthic community is to be understood.

All the main trophic groups of invertebrates are presented in the compositions of dominant assemblages of zooperiphyton in the studied waterbodies and watercourses. The strong pollution of water by suspended solids of anthropogenic origin in the water of the upper Volga reservoirs leads to the suppression of typically sessile filter-feeding invertebrates (sponges, bryozoans, and Dreissena) able to form the highest biomass of zooperiphyton using natural food items. The conditions of the disturbed structure of food resources are favorable for the development of detritivores-gatherers. In small rivers receiving industrial wastewaters, excessive amounts of food in the water column and in the form of sediments on the substrates suppresses invertebrates-biofowlers and facilitates the expansion of the benthic larvae of chironomids of g. Chironomus (combining the filtration and gathering of food particles on the substrates) to the vacant spatial niches. At the same time, the role of nematodes and oligochaetes with prevailing detritophages increases. In the acidified lakes of the Darwinsky National Reserve, the decrease in the total species diversity of zooperiphyton is accompanied by decreases in the role of filter-feeding invertebrates. The chironomid larvae and oligochaetes prevailed in the poor zoocenoses. The roles of predatory caddisfly larvae, black gnats, and nematodes increased. The labile structural characteristics of zooperiphyton with the conservation of the historically formed methods of foraging are the main modern way that biofouling communities adapt to changes in the quality and quantity of food resources upon modern anthropogenic pollution of the aquatic environment.  相似文献

The complexity of the relations between the organisms and the environment are reflected through the energy content. So we tested the hypothesis on body energy content variation in invertebrates and its relation with some environmental factors (season, habitat type, trophic status and trophic guild). We expected higher energy values for phytophilous fauna, rainy season, in reservoirs with higher trophic levels and for herbivorous invertebrates. The results showed the influence of seasonality and trophic status of the reservoir on the energy content of invertebrates, which was higher in the rainy season and in the mesotrophic reservoirs, due to the input of allochthonous material during this season, confirming our initial prediction. A higher caloric content was recorded for carnivorous and detritivorous invertebrates. The differences between the trophic guilds were primarily related to the opportunistic feeding behavior, which may be considered as one of the main factors controlling the energy flow of benthic and phytophilous invertebrates. Subfossil biotic assemblages in lakes’ surface sediments have been used to infer ecological conditions across environmental gradients. Local variables are usually the major drivers of assemblage composition, but in remote oceanic islands biogeographic filters may play a significant role. To assess the contribution of local and regional filters in the composition of subfossil diatom and chironomid assemblages in surface sediments, 41 lakes in Azores archipelago were studied and related to environmental variables. Ordination techniques were used to identify the forcing factors that best explain the composition of these assemblages. Both assemblages are influenced by multiple limnological variables (conductivity, pH and nutrients). However, diatom assemblages differed mainly in the proportion of planktonic versus benthic species along lakes’ depth gradient while chironomids differed significantly among islands but not among lake depths. Thus, biogeographic filters play an important role in shaping islands’ freshwater communities, particularly insect ones, more influenced by geographic variables. Results demonstrate the accuracy and potential of biotic remains in sediments for applied studies of lake ecology, trophic status, climatic trends and ecological reconstruction and evolution of lakes. In the Azores, the application of this information for the development of inference models is envisaged as a further step to accomplish these goals.  相似文献

The diversity of beetle assemblages in different habitat types (primary forest, logged forest, acacia plantation and oil palm plantation) in Sabah, Malaysia was investigated using three different methods based on habitat levels (Winkler sampling, flight-interception-trapping and mist-blowing). The overall diversity was extremely high, with 1711 species recorded from only 8028 individuals and 81 families (115 family and subfamily groups). Different degrees of environmental changes had varying effects on the beetle species richness and abundance, with oil palm plantation assemblage being most severely affected, followed by acacia plantation and then logged forest. A few species became numerically dominant in the oil palm plantation. In terms of beetle species composition, the acacia fauna showed much similarity with the logged forest fauna, and the oil palm fauna was very different from the rest. The effects of environmental variables (number of plant species, sapling and tree densities, amount of leaf litter, ground cover, canopy cover, soil pH and compaction) on the beetle assemblage were also investigated. Leaf litter correlated with species richness, abundance and composition of subterranean beetles. Plant species richness, tree and sapling densities correlated with species richness, abundance and composition of understorey beetles while ground cover correlated only with the species richness and abundance of these beetles. Canopy cover correlated only with arboreal beetles. In trophic structure, predators represented more than 40% of the species and individuals. Environmental changes affected the trophic structure with proportionally more herbivores (abundance) but fewer predators (species richness and abundance) in the oil palm plantation. Biodiversity, conservation and practical aspects of pest management were also highlighted in this study.  相似文献

In the small Latka River, which is characterized by a high heterogeneity of abiotic characteristics and a rich fauna composition, a high diversity of developing zooperiphyton structures was recorded consisting of invertebrates with short life cycles: the larvae of chironomids, caddisflies, mayflies, oligochaetes, nematodes, and other animals. One distinctive feature of seasonal and interannual zooperiphyton succession is the annual prevalence in abundance of spreading chironomid larvae of age I, which belong to the most representative dominating group of amphibiotic invertebrates, including species adapted to different saprobic conditions. The taxonomic and quantitative domination of chironomids make it possible to consider the family Chironomidae a key group in the formation of the zoocenosis structure. Under disturbed habitat conditions (pollution, rainfall floods, and the press of omnivorous invertebrates), the restoration of typical structures occurs rather quickly due to the particular features of biology in species short life cycles. However, no relative stabilization in communities was observed. This is the main difference between the sequence of succession processes in the Latka River and that observed in large water bodies (lakes and water reservoirs), where there are no strict limitations on living-space volume or food availability and abiotic conditions are more stable, thus allowing filter-feeding sessile animals (sponges, bryozoans, and zebra mussels) to develop on solid substrates. These species are able to develop multispecies consortia and form relatively stable long-term communities.  相似文献

1. We investigated trophic interactions between benthic heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and oligochaetes and microcrustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) transferred from a silty, littoral freshwater habitat to laboratory microcosms. With a newly adapted experimental design we were able to compute (i) predation rates on benthic HNF by the tested metazoan organisms and (ii) growth rates of the natural benthic HNF population when losses because of this predation were excluded. 2. The experiments covered a temperature range of 4–27 °C and a fivefold variation of predator densities (September 2000–February 2002). For 60% of these experiments, significant predation of oligochaetes and microcrustaceans on benthic HNF was revealed. Predation rates on HNF ranged from 0 to 0.256 day?1. Growth rates of the benthic HNF assemblage varied from ?0.098 to 0.353 day?1; they were used to estimate the significance of the measured losses in comparison with possible other loss factors. 3. The data suggested that during the major part of the year a high percentage of the HNF production was consumed in the surficial sediment of the investigated system, resulting in a relatively constant and low HNF standing stock and an uncoupling of benthic bacteria and their protistan grazers. Top–down control by microcrustaceans and oligochaetes was identified as one significant, frequently prevailing regulatory factor, while other parameters responsible for the control of benthic HNF densities remain to be examined.  相似文献

In this study, we assessed the impact of bleachedkraft pulp mill effluent (BKME) on the distributionand composition of benthic communities at JackfishBay, Lake Superior. Sediment samples were collectedfrom 44 stations from which several environmentalvariables (extractable organic chlorine [EOCl],metals, organic carbon, particle size, secchi depth, and water depth) and benthic community compositionwere determined. Relationships between environmentalvariables and benthic community structure wereassessed using canonical correspondence analysis(CCA). CCA revealed two distinct biological gradientsat Jackfish Bay, the first associated with degradedbottom sediments and nutrient enrichment and thesecond associated with water depth. Both gradientsrevealed three distinct regions at Jackfish Bay: 1) anarea of highly degraded sediments, located 300–1200 mbelow the outfall, 2) a small, mesotrophic (nutrientenriched) area adjacent to this zone, and 3) remainingareas of Jackfish Bay, including the internalreference sites in Tunnel Bay. Sediments in theimpaired region contained high concentrations oforganic matter (7–21% as loss on ignition [LOI]) andEOCl (up to 5200 mg/kg dw); together these variablesaccounted for 73% of the variation associated withthe first canonical axis of the CCA. This region wasdominated by the oligochaetes Tubifex tubifexand Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (64–100% of thebenthic community). Sediments in the second regionwere characterized by an abundant and diverse benthiccommunity comprised of benthic harpacticoids,Chironomidae, and oligochaetes. Stations outside ofthese two regions were characterized by a benthiccommunity similar in composition to that expected foroligotrophic Lake Superior waters, including Diporiea sp., Stylodrilus heringianus, Mysis relicta, Sphaerium, Pisidium and benthicharpacticoids. Based on a Monte Carlo significancetest, benthic community structure was significantly(p = 0.01) related to the environmental variablescomprising the first axis of the CCA. Water depth wasthe most important explanatory variable associatedwith the second axis of the CCA; both taxa richnessand abundance declined significantly with increasingdepth. The comprehensive approach employed in thisstudy clearly delineated the occurrence and degree ofimpact on the benthic environment and may be useful infuture risk assessments of sites affected byanthropogenic activity.  相似文献

Community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates was studied in six first- through fourth-order streams in northeast France, to elucidate changes in richness, abundance, diversity and evenness of mesohabitat assemblages as a function of environmental conditions. Patch samples were subjected to multivariate analyses to determine: (i) relationships among seven indices describing community structure (structure parameters); (ii) relationships among seven environmental variables; (iii) the relationship between community structure and environmental characteristics of patches. Faunal data showed that indices measuring the distribution of individuals among taxa (evenness, dominance) and richness are prominent in describing the structure of macroinvertebrate communities of mesohabitats. The analysis of environmental data demonstrated a major differentiating ability of current velocity and strong inter-relations among in-stream hydraulic-dependent parameters in structuring the mesohabitat environment. The co-structure (= relationship) between community organization and environmental variables indicated that substrate may be a primary determinant of community structure. Current velocity and water depth emerged as secondary factors. Trends in community structure were closely related to the spatial variability of mesohabitats. Species richness increased with habitat heterogeneity. Total abundance increased with trophic potentialities of patches. Equitability and diversity seemed to increase with patch stability.
