Specimens of Phoxinus phoxinus (L.) were collected over a period of a year from September 1967 to September 1968 from Frongoch Lake, Cardiganshire, Wales. Of a total of 650 fish examined for helminth parasites, 32 % were definitive hosts for Macrolecithus papilliger , and 16·5% for Neoechinorhynchus rutili (Müller), both parasites of the alimentary canal. All the fish examined were second intermediate host for Diplostomum phoxini (Faust) in the brain and 1·67% for Ligula intestinalis (L.) in the coelom. An increase in incidence of infestation with M. papilliger in spring and autumn and with N. rutili in summer were evident. The sex of the fish had no apparent effect on worm burden whereas size was more significant. There was a decrease in incidence of infestation with M. papilliger and an increase with N. rutili together with an increase in intensity of infestation with D. phoxini as the fish became larger. The latter species accumulated in the brain as the host increased in age.  相似文献

The distribution of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis along the alimentary tract of several species of freshwaster fish was studied in both natural and experimental infections. The parasite exhibits a clear preference for a particular region of the alimentary canal, which differs from host species to host species, but it is capable of surviving in all regions of the intestine. In some species, but not in all, its growth rate may be reduced in regions outside of the preferred site. The parsite remains in the same site throughout the period of infection, emigrations occurring only preparatory to complete loss of the parasite from the host. The presence of cestodes in the region of the preferred site has no effect upon the distribution of the parasite. At high levels of infection the range of the parsite's distribution is extended. The feeding of larval parasites to fish by stomach tube also leads to an extension of range, whereas when fish are allowed to feed on cystacanths removed from their intermediate host the parasite establishes in a more anterior position than usual and in a site that it does not occupy to any extent in natural infections. It is concluded that the distribution of P. laevis in the alimentary canal of fish is determined primarily by the process of liberation, activation and establishment of the parasite, and that it normally attaches in the first available space and remains there. Unsuitable physico-chemical or feeding conditions affect only its growth, not the site that it occupies. It is suggested that P. laevis may be atypical in this respect.  相似文献

Houseflies caught on refuse dumps in six areas of Ibadan were dissected and the intestinal parasitic cysts and eggs which were found in their alimentary canal were similar to those found in the examined faeces of the community living in the environment. Strongly eggs were also found in the alimentary canal of Musca species which had fed on the faeces of an infected sheep. While the houseflies caught in the living quarters the high income group were free of parasites, some of these caught in and around low income group residential areas possessed various parasitic eggs and cysts. Musca domestica specimens were exposed in the laboratory to eggs of three intestinal parasites. Their ability to transmit these eggs by regurgitation was highest within 1/2 hour of ingestion and it decreased with time until it was lost after 2 hours.  相似文献

Three-hundred and thirty-two fish of eight species (5 Salmo salar , 68 Salvelinus fontinalis , 32 S. namaycush , 102 Coregonus clupeaformis , 1 Prosopium cylindraceum , 107 Esox lucius , 14 Catostomus catostomus , 3 Couesius plumbeus ) from the Smallwood Reservoir, Labrador, Canada, were examined for metazoan parasites, using conventional parasitological techniques.
Fifteen genera of parasites were recovered (two of Monogenea, two of Digenea, four of Cestoda, three of Nematoda, two of Acanthocephala and two of Copepoda), these including seven new host records.
Significant differences were noted in the prevalence of the various parasites which were common to the different species of fish examined. No differences were recorded in the parasite burden of male and female fish. There was no correlation between the number of parasite species per infected fish and host age except in the case of Salvelinus namaycush . Food items of the fish examined were also noted.  相似文献

Fifty specimens each of bream Abramis brama and roach Rutilus rutilus were examined for metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates; 25 specimens of each species were collected from the Kiel Canal, a man-made waterway, and a nearby freshwater lake, the Dieksee. This is the first detailed parasitological examination of A. brama and R. rutilus at these locations: 30 parasite species were found, comprising 4 protozoans, 4 myxozoans, 5 digeneans, 3 monogeneans, 2 cestodes, 6 nematodes, 2 acanthocephalans, 3 crustaceans and 1 hirudinean. The crustacean Caligus lacustris occurred in both habitats while 2 other crustacean species, 2 acanthocephalans and 1 hirudinean were recorded exclusively for the lake habitat. Larval as well as adult stages of the different parasite species were found, indicating that both fish species act as intermediate and final hosts in both habitats. The Kiel Canal (total of 17 parasite species) showed a lower parasite species richness for A. brama and R. rutilus (14 and 10 parasite species, respectively) than the lake (25 parasite species). A. brama had a higher parasite richness (22 species) than R. rutilus (16 species) in the lake habitat. Most parasites collected were of freshwater origin. Consequently, the observed infection pattern of both fish species in the waterway is mainly influenced by the limited salinity tolerance of freshwater parasites, which are negatively affected even by a salinity of 2.3 to 4.5. In the central Kiel Canal, neither fish species was infected with marine parasites of low host specifity. These parasites are either limited by the low salinity at this sampling site (<4.5 to 6.0) or they cannot enter the canal due to the environmental conditions prevailing in this artificial brackish water habitat. Thus, the canal may comprise a natural barrier preventing the distribution of North Sea parasites into the Baltic Sea. However, the brackish water Baltic Sea nematodes Paracuaria adunca and Cosmocephalus obvelatus were found in R. rutilus from the canal, demonstrating the ability of some parasite species to invade and extend their range of distribution through this man-made shipping route from the Baltic to the North Sea.  相似文献

Synopsis The acquisition, digestion, and assimilation of food is critical for the growth and survival of fish larvae; a fish larva either grows or it perishes. Fish larvae are characterized by digestive systems and diets that differ from adults. Larvae undergo a pattern of trophic ontogeny, changing diet with increasing size, and these changes result in differences in digestive requirements. At first feeding, the larval alimentary canal is functional, but is structurally and functionally less complex than that of adults. The larval alimentary canal remains unchanged histologically during the larval period before transformation. During transformation, major changes that result in the development of the adult alimentary canal occur. The ontogeny of the alimentary canal differs in different taxa, and experimental evidence suggests that functional differences exist as well. Assimilation efficiency may be lower in larvae than it is in adult fishes, due to a lack of a morphological and functional stomach in larvae, but the question of improving assimilation efficiencies during larval development before transformation remains unresolved.  相似文献

Non-indigenous species that become invasive are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. In various freshwater systems in Europe, populations of native amphipods and fish are progressively displaced by highly adaptive non-indigenous species that can perform explosive range extensions. A total of 40 Ponto-Caspian round gobies Neogobius melanostomus from the Rhine River near Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, were examined for metazoan parasites and feeding ecology. Three metazoan parasite species were found: two Nematoda and one Acanthocephala. The two Nematoda, Raphidascaris acus and Paracuaria adunca, had a low prevalence of 2.5%. The Acanthocephala, Pomphorhynchus tereticollis, was the predominant parasite species, reaching a level of 90.0% prevalence in the larval stage, correlated with fish size. In addition, four invasive amphipod species, Corophium curvispinum (435 specimens), Dikerogammarus villosus (5,454), Echinogammarus trichiatus (2,695) and Orchestia cavimana (1,448) were trapped at the sampling site. Only D. villosus was infected with P. tereticollis at a prevalence of 0.04%. The invasive goby N. melanostomus mainly preys on these non-indigenous amphipods, and may have replaced native amphipods in the transmission of P. tereticollis into the vertebrate paratenic host. This study gives insight into a potential parasite-host system that consists mainly of invasive species, such as the Ponto-Caspian fish and amphipods in the Rhine. We discuss prospective distribution and migration pathways of non-indigenous vertebrate (round goby) and invertebrates (amphipods) under special consideration of parasite dispersal.  相似文献

Linking ecology with parasite diversity in Neotropical fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A comparative analysis was performed to seek large-scale patterns in the relationships between a set of fish species traits (body size, type of environment, trophic level, schooling behaviour, depth range, mean habitat temperature, geographical range, ability to enter brackish waters and capability of migration) and the diversity of their metazoan parasite assemblages among 651 Neotropical fish species. Two measurements of parasite diversity are used: the species richness and the taxonomic distinctness of a fish's parasite assemblage, including all metazoan parasites, ectoparasites only, or endoparasites only. The results showed that, on this scale, the average taxonomic distinctness of parasite assemblages was clearly more sensitive to the influence of host traits than parasite species richness. Differences in the taxonomic diversification of the parasite assemblages of different fish species were mainly related to the fish's environment (higher values in benthic–demersal species), trophic level (positive correlation with increasing level), temperature (positive correlation with temperature in marine ectoparasites, negative in endoparasites; positive for all groups of parasites in freshwater fishes) and oceanic distribution (higher values in fish species from the Pacific Ocean than those of the Atlantic). The results suggest that, among Neotropical fish species, only certain key host traits have influenced the processes causing the taxonomic diversification of parasite assemblages.  相似文献

A crop adapted for an herbivorous diet of seeds has previously been documented in the Early Cretaceous birds Sapeornis and Hongshanornis. Here we report on several specimens of Yanornis that preserve a crop containing fish. One specimen preserves two whole fish in the oesophagus, indicating that Early Cretaceous birds shared trophic specializations with Neornithes for the increased energetic demands of flight – namely the storing of food for later consumption when the stomach is full. Whole fish also indicate that despite their presence, teeth were not used to orally process food, suggesting the hypertrophied dentition in this taxon were utilized in prey capture. The presence of macerated fish bones in the crop of other specimens indicates the highly efficient advanced muscular system of peristalsis responsible for moving ingested items between different segments of the alimentary canal was also in place. Despite the fact many features of the modern avian alimentary canal are inferred to compensate for the absence of teeth in birds (expandable oesophagus, grinding gizzard), the derived alimentary canal was apparently present in toothed Cretaceous birds. Although Yanornis was considered to have switched their diet from piscivorous to herbivorous, based on position and morphology we reinterpret the gastroliths reported in one specimen as sand impacted in the intestines, and reconstruct the taxon as primarily piscivorous. This is a novel interpretation for fossilized gastroliths, and the first documentation of this condition in the fossil record.  相似文献

The effect of pollutants on the intensity of infection of metazoan parasites in the Mayan catfish, Ariopsis assimilis was investigated. Data were collected on pollutants and metazoan parasites from 76 catfish from five localities in Chetumal Bay in October, 1996. Nineteen pollutants (pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) were found in the catfish livers. Heavy metal content was not determined. Nineteen metazoan parasite species were recovered. After controlling for fish length and sampling station, there was a significant negative linear relationship between the intensity of the larval digenean Mesostephanus appendiculatoides and 1,1,1,-trichloro-2,2-bis (4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) concentrations. This negative relationship may be explained either by the effect of the pesticide on the mortality of (i) free-living larval forms, (ii) metacercariae in the fish, (iii) infected fish or (iv) intermediate host snails. There were significant differences between fish parasitized and not parasitized with M. appendiculatoides with respect to their DDT concentrations. There were also significant differences between the variances of the mean Clark's coefficient of condition values between catfish parasitized and not parasitized by M. appendiculatoides, with the variance of non-parasitized catfish being significantly larger. The results provided statistical evidence that DDT has a detrimental effect on M. appendiculatoides infection intensity. Furthermore, the significantly larger variance value of Clark's coefficient for non-parasitized fish suggested that DDT affects both the parasite and general host condition.  相似文献

The sheatfish, Silurus glanis (L.), from the terminal part of River Po was examined for the presence of helminth parasites. Of 182 S. glanis specimens, 95 (52.2%) were infected with the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis. Mid-gut followed by fore-gut appeared to be the most infected portions of host alimentary canal. In 45 sheatfish of total length < or = 40 cm, specimens of P. laevis were found encapsulated in mesenteric and peritoneal tissues. A comparison between light and electron microscopy on features and stages of testis development in both encapsulated male P. laevis and intestinal male parasites showed that the encysted acanthocephalans were immature; mature spermatozoa were rarely found within the testis of worms from the alimentary canal. Among extraintestinal P. laevis specimens, the presumable eversion of parasite praesoma was observed and described. The results of the present survey suggest that small-size individuals of S. glanis could be used as paratenic host by P. laevis during its life cycle in the study area.  相似文献

Three hundred and twenty-three fish of six species (salmonids and coregonids) from four locations on the eastern coast of Labrador were examined for metazoan parasites, using conventional parasitological techniques. Twenty-four genera of parasites were recovered (3 of Monogenea, 8 of Digenea, 5 of Cestoda, 5 of Nematoda, 1 of Acanthocephala, 2 of parasitic Copepoda). Fifty-one new host records were noted. Fourteen genera of parasites were noted in Salmo salar L., while Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill) contained 21 genera; S. namaycush (Walbaum,) 12 genera; S. alpinus (L.), 16 genera: Coregonus clupeaformis (Mitchill), 11 genera; Prosopium cylindraceum (Pallas), 11 genera. It was found that the parasite burden of the various fish species examined was not homogeneous when sample areas and sex of the fish was considered. An increase in the number of parasite species per infected host with age was seen in the case of Salmo salar, Salvelinus fontinalis, S. namaycush, S. alpinus. In Coregonus clupeaformis and Prosopium cylindraceum no such correlation was seen, this difference being related to the ecology of the fish. The parasitofauna of the various salmonid species examined was not homogeneous, significant differences being noted in the number of certain species infected with specific parasites. Significant differences were also noted in the parasite burden of the Salmonidae when compared with the Coregonidae. Food items recovered from the fish autopsied were noted.  相似文献

Between October 2001 and March 2002, 103 specimens of A. tricolor from Angra dos Reis (23 degrees 01' S, 44 degrees 19' W), in the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed in order to study their metazoan parasite infracommunities. Ten species of metazoan parasites were collected: 4 digeneans, 1 cestode, 1 acantocephalan, 2 nematodes, 1 copepod, and 1 hirudinean; 77.7% of the fishes were parasitized by one or more metazoan, with a mean of 3.5 +/- 6.2 parasite/fish. Digenean was the most dominant with 4 species that accounted for 53.2% of the total parasites collected; Ergasilus sp. was the most abundant species. Abundance and prevalence of Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) were positively correlated with the total length of host. Relationships between total body length of fish and both total parasite abundance and mean parasite species richness were observed. Mean parasite diversity of species was correlated to host's total length, with significant differences found between male and female fishes. Two pairs of larval species showed significant positive association and covariation. The metazoan parasite infracommunities of A. tricolor presented dominance of larval endoparasites; correlation of parasite abundance, diversity, and species richness with host total length; and low number of parasite interspecific relationships. The parasite community of A. tricolor showed some similarities with the parasite community of another South American Atlantic engraulid.  相似文献

Fish parasites have been repeatedly reported to be a major threat to the developing industry of finfish mariculture in Indonesia, due to severe parasite and disease outbreaks. The aim of this study was to identify the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates that infect Lates calcarifer in a representative mariculture farm in Indonesia. Examined were 105 L. calcarifer (seabass) for the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates. Thirty‐five specimens each from the net cages of the National Sea Farming Development Centre (Balai Budidaya Laut, BBL) in Lampung Bay, South Sumatra, Indonesia were investigated in three consecutive seasons (two dry and one rainy season from 2002 to 2003). Nineteen parasite species were identified; all fish specimens were infected with two to 10 parasite species, demonstrating a species‐rich parasite fauna. Protozoans (1 species), myxozoans (1), digeneans (3), monogeneans (5), cestodes (3), nematodes (5) and acanthocephalans (1) were found, including 11 new host records in cultured L. calcarifer from Indonesia. Larval and adult parasite stages were isolated, demonstrating that this fish species, although kept inside the net cages, still functions as an intermediate and final host for marine fish parasites. During all seasons, the six detected monoxenous (single host life cycle) parasite species showed a higher prevalence than the 13 heteroxenous (multiple hosts) species. Most abundant were the fish pathogenic monogeneans Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli, Pseudorhabdosynochus lantauensis, Benedenia epinepheli and Neobenedenia melleni with a high prevalence. Most heteroxenous parasites (Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala) occurred with a low prevalence below 26%, caused by the specific culture conditions. Diversity of the heteroxenous parasites was higher in the dry seasons than in the rainy season. Though some seasonality could be observed for the fish pathogenic monogeneans, severe disease outbreaks of these ectoparasites cannot be excluded in either the dry or rainy season.  相似文献

解剖检查了 133尾捕自长江黄州江段的长须黄颡鱼 ,发现寄主感染长江丽棘虫的感染率为 4 8.9% ,感染强度为 5 .4 (虫 /尾 ) ,平均密度为 2 .6 (虫 /尾 ) ,感染鲇异棘虫的感染率为 2 1.8% ,感染强度为 5 .5 (虫 /尾 ) ,平均密度为1.2 (虫 /尾 ) ,两种棘头虫在长须黄颡鱼种群中均为聚集分布 ;当两种棘头虫共同寄生在宿主肠道内时 ,其感染强度和单独感染时相比没有显著差异 ,但是 ,各自的生态位宽度均变小 ;两种棘头虫的正关联关系显著。  相似文献

The morphology of Leishmania major parasites and their interactions with various regions of the alimentary canal of Phlebotomus papatasi were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Parasites were observed to undergo development initiated with the ingestion of amastigotes and culminating in a characteristic distribution of four distinct morphological forms in various parts of the alimentary canal: namely, large numbers of elongate nectomonads in the abdominal mid-gut, haptomonad forms attached to the cuticle of the stomodeal valve, small spherical forms attached to the esophagus and masses of short promastigotes, believed to be the infective forms, lying free in the anterior thoracic mid-gut and the esophagus.  相似文献

As aquatic habitats throughout the world are increasingly contaminated with toxic chemicals, toxicologist strive to determine what impact these substances will have an biological systems. So far, the effects of this type of pollution on fish parasites has received little attention, despite their important status as determinants of fish health. Robert Poulin discusses the many ways in which toxic pollution may affect infections of metazoan parasites in freshwater fish. Effects on fish immunity, parasites survival and intermediate host populations are not independent, and currently the outcome of toxic pollution and parasitism in fish is impossible to predict. Future research will have to answer several questions if we are to understand and forecast pollution-mediated changes in parasitism, an urgent challenge for ecotoxicologists and fish parasitologists alike.  相似文献

The metazoan parasites of four populations of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were analysed from two localities in the Atlantic Ocean (Madeira Islands, Portugal, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and two localities in the Pacific Ocean (Callao, Peru, and Antofagasta, Chile), collected during 2002 and 2003. A total of 373 fish specimens were studied and 34 metazoan parasite species were obtained. Parasites identified from the populations of chub mackerel studied could be separated into three categories: parasites with a wide distribution, present in the Pacific and Atlantic, parasites proper of the Pacific Ocean and parasites proper of the Atlantic Ocean. The analyses of some highly specific parasites of the genus Scomber ( i.e. monogeneans of the genus Kuhnia and didymozoid digeneans) strongly suggest the need for a revision of the taxonomic status of chub mackerels from the Atlantic and Pacific coast of America. The results demonstrated the usefulness of parasites as adequate tools to clarify the taxonomic status of their hosts.  相似文献
