Mechanical interpretations of Neandertal skeletal robusticity suggest extremely high activity levels compared to modern humans. Such activity patterns imply high energy requirements; yet it has been argued that Neandertals were also inefficient foragers. The present study addresses this apparent conflict by estimating energy needs in Neandertals and then evaluating those estimates in the context of energetic and foraging data compiled for contemporary human foragers and nonhuman primates. Energy demands for Neandertals were determined by first predicting basal metabolic rates (BMR) from body weight estimates using human standards developed by the World Health Organization [FAO/WHO/UNU (1985) Energy and Protein Requirements. Report of the Joint FAO/WHO/UNU Export Committee, Geneva: WHO]. Total daily energy expenditure (kcal/day) was then estimated assuming high levels of physical activity (i.e., 2--3 x BMR), comparable to those observed among subsistence-level populations today. These estimates of energy requirements (ranging from 3000--5500 kcal/day) were then used to determine Neandertal foraging efficiency assuming (1) minimal survival-level foraging returns, and (2) daily foraging times longer than those observed among any contemporary foraging group and comparable to a nonhuman primate. Even with these extremely conservative parameters, estimates of Neandertal foraging efficiency (approximately 800--1150 kcal/h foraged) were comparable to those observed among living hunter-gatherers. These results indicate that if Neandertals did have heavy activity levels, as implied by their skeletal robusticity, they would have required foraging efficiencies within the range observed among modern groups. Thus, Neandertals could have been either highly active or poor foragers, but they could not have been both.  相似文献

We compared the accuracy of two physical activity recall questionnaires and a motion detector in 45- to 84-yr-old women (n = 35) and men (n = 32), using doubly labeled water (DLW) in conjunction with indirect calorimetry as the criterion measure. Subjects were administered the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS) and Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (LTA). Physical activity energy expenditure was determined over a 10-day period by using a Caltrac uniaxial accelerometer and DLW in conjunction with indirect calorimetry. In older women, Minnesota LTA (386 +/- 228 kcal/day) and Caltrac (379 +/- 162 kcal/day) underestimated physical activity by approximately 55% compared with DLW (873 +/- 244 kcal/day). No difference was observed between daily physical activity measured by the YPAS (863 +/- 447 kcal/day) and DLW in older women. In older men, Minnesota LTA (459 +/- 288 kcal/day) and Caltrac (554 +/- 242 kcal/day) underestimated daily physical activity by approximately 50-60% compared with DLW (1,211 +/- 429 kcal/day). No difference was found between physical activity measured by the YPAS (1,107 +/- 612 kcal/day) and DLW in older men. Despite no difference in mean physical activity levels between YPAS and DLW in women and men, Bland and Altman (Lancet 1: 307-310, 1986) analyses demonstrated poor concordance between DLW and YPAS (i.e., limits of agreement = -1,310-1,518 kcal/day). Our data suggest that the Minnesota LTA recall and Caltrac uniaxial accelerometer may significantly underestimate free-living daily physical activity energy expenditure in older women and men. Although the YPAS compares favorably with DLW on a group basis, its use as a proxy measure of individual daily physical activity energy expenditure may be limited in older women and men.  相似文献

Considerable attention has been devoted to variation in levels of energy expenditure between and within populations; these are commonly evaluated following international guidelines for grading light, moderate, and heavy physical activity levels (PAL). This study presents activity profiles by season and sex for subsistence agro-pastoralists in Nepal, comparing data for a sample of 20 men observed four times across the year with previously published data on women. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was estimated from direct minute-by-minute observation (totaling 1,679 h for men, 3,601 h for women) and measures of the energy cost of single tasks (117 for men, 168 for women). PAL were calculated and graded as multiples of predicted basal metabolic rate (BMR). Despite an explicitly egalitarian organization of labor, men achieved higher PAL than women (P < .0001), although according to international gradings, both men and women assume moderately heavy PAL in the winter and very heavy PAL in the monsoon. PAL were 1.88 and 2.22 × BMR for men in respective seasons (P < .005; TEE, 11.8 MJ/d and 13.9 MJ/d) and 1.77 and 2.0 × BMR for women (TEE, 9.1 MJ/d and 10.5 MJ/d). High TEE values result from time-consuming work in subsistence tasks, most of which are of moderate energy cost. Results show that the international guideline (FAO/WHO/UNU [1985]) for grading levels of energy expenditure, which adopts discrepant sex-specific values to define thresholds for moderate or heavy PAL, can mask significant gender variation. Male/female ratios of PAL values are suggested instead for population-level comparisons. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Measurements of incubation energetics can vary depending on the method used to measure metabolism of an incubating bird. Therefore, we evaluated the energy expenditure of six male and four female wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus) using doubly labeled water (DLW), the rate of mass loss, and estimates of metabolic water production derived from water influx rate (WIR). Incubation metabolic rates (IMR) determined with DLW (169+/-21 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) SD) were significantly lower than estimates derived from mass loss (277+/-46 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) SD) and WIR (males=289+/-60 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) vs. females=400+/-69 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) SD). Estimates of IMR from mass loss and WIR were similar to IMR (305+/-39 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) SD) determined by respirometry in a previous study, and IMR from DLW was similar to estimates based on heart rate (HR; 147+/-26 kJ x kg(-1) x d(-1) SD) determined in another study. Applying the different measurements of IMR to construct an energy budget, we estimate that a breeding pair of wandering albatrosses spends 124-234 MJ to incubate the egg for 78 d. Finally, IMRs determined with DLW and HR were similar to estimated basal metabolic rates derived from six different allometric equations, suggesting that heat production from adult maintenance metabolism is sufficient to incubate the egg.  相似文献

The energy expenditures (EE) of 23 adult male Marines were measured during a strenuous 11-day cold-weather field exercise at 2,200- to 2,550-m elevation by both doubly labeled water (2H2 18O, DLW) and intake balance methods. The DLW EE calculations were corrected for changes in baseline isotopic abundances in a control group that did not receive 2H2 18O. Intake balance EE was estimated from the change in body energy stores and food intake. Body energy-store changes were calculated from anthropometric [-1,574 +/- 144 (SE) kcal/day] and isotope dilution (-1,872 +/- 293 kcal/day) measurements made before and after the field exercise. The subjects kept daily logbook records of ration consumption (3,132 +/- 165 kcal/day). Mean DLW EE (4,919 +/- 190 kcal/day) did not differ significantly from intake balance EE estimated from food intake and either anthropometric (4,705 +/- 181 kcal/day) or isotope dilution (5,004 +/- 240 kcal/day) estimates of the change in body energy stores. The DLW method can be used with at least the same degree of confidence as the intake balance method to measure the EE of active free-living humans.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess and quantify the health outcomes associated with a moderate-intensity (50% VO2R) exercise program designed to achieve the American College of Sports Medicine net caloric expenditure guideline of 1,000 kcal x wk(-1). Fifteen apparently healthy but sedentary premenopausal women with the baseline characteristics (mean +/- SD age, height, weight, body composition, and VO2max: 37.4 +/- 6.3 yr, 166.2 +/- 6.2 cm, 72.1 +/- 11.2 kg, 32.5 +/- 5.8%, and 34.8 +/- 5.8 mL x kg(-1) x min(-1), respectively) participated in and completed the study. Exercise training was performed 3-4 days per week for 10 weeks in a progressive manner at moderate intensity (50% VO2R). There were significant (P < 0.05) improvements in VO2max (+2.5 mL x kg(-1) x min(-1)), systolic (-13.7 mm Hg) and diastolic (-6.4 mm Hg) blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (+3.2 mg x dL(-1)), fasting blood glucose (-4.9 mg x dL(-1)), and percent body fat (-1.6%). Although the American College of Sports Medicine specifies that the energy expenditure goal should be a net caloric expenditure of 1,000 kcal x wk(-1) and classifies relative moderate intensity as 40-59% of heart rate reserve or VO2R, we are unaware of any previous investigations that have examined the specific health outcomes associated with an exercise program fulfilling these requirements. Results indicate that significant health benefits will be conferred to previously sedentary, premenopausal women who engage in a moderate-intensity, 10-week exercise program designed to fulfill the net energy expenditure guideline of 1,000 kcal x wk(-1).  相似文献

The energy cost of subsistence activities and the daily time and energy budgets of Tatuyo women were assessed as part of a village energy flow study. The Tatuyo are swidden horticulturalists relying on bitter manioc (Manihot esculenta) as a staple crop. Except for the actual felling of new gardens, women are responsible for most of the horticultural work and food preparation. Time budgets were assessed using 24-hour activity diaries. Rates of energy expenditure in typical activities were measured by indirect calorimetry using a Max-Planck respirometer. Daily energy expenditure was calculated using these rates in conjunction with the activity diaries. Rates of energy expenditure in standard activities were moderate and broadly comparable to published values for other populations living in tropical environments. The mean daily energy expenditure was 2,133 kcal (8.9 MJ). This value is similar to that reported for other subsistence horticulturalists and close to the FAO recommendation for energy intake for moderately active individuals.  相似文献

Total free-living energy expenditure (TEE) was measured in 9 normal weight controls and 5 obese women using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method. Resting energy expenditure (REE) and the thermic effect of food (TEF) were measured by indirect calorimetry and the energy cost of physical activity (PA) calculated by deduction, in order to quantify the components and identify determinants of free-living TEE. Although REE was quantitatively the major component of TEE in both groups, PA best explained the variability, contributing 76% to the variance in free-living TEE. The obese women had elevated values for TEE (12397+/-2565 vs. 8339+/-1787 kJ/d, mean+/-SD; p<0.00S), compared with the control women. PA (5071+/-2385 vs. 2552+/-1452; p<0.0S) and REE (6393+/-678 vs. 5084+/-259; p<0.000S) were also raised in the obese, whereas TEF was not significantly different between the groups, accounting for 7.6% of energy expenditure for the obese and 8% for the control subjects. Body weight was the single best determinant of mean daily free-living TEE across both groups. We conclude that PA and body weight are the main determinants of free-living TEE .  相似文献

The long-term effect of early life undernutrition on late gestation energy expenditure (EEgest) was investigated in sheep. Ewes were fed either adequate (100%) or restricted (60%) energy and protein during late foetal life as well as during last trimester of gestation later in life, resulting in three groups: Adequate-Adequate (AA, n = 5), Adequate-Restricted (AR, n = 5) and Restricted-Restricted (RR, n = 5). At two weeks pre-partum, EEgest were calculated from respiratory gaseous exchange and nitrogen excreted in urine and further it was partitioned to energy expenditure for conceptus development (EEconceptus) and homeorhetic adaptations in maternal metabolism (EEhomeorhetic). Late gestational energy and protein restriction reduced the EEgest in the AR ewes (4.1 MJ x d(-1)) but not in the RR ewes (5.2 MJ x d(-1)) compared with the AA ewes (6.8 MJ x d(-1)). Based on conceptus-weight, no significant difference was found in EEhomeorhetic among the groups; 172, 175 and 169 kJ/kg x d(-1) in AA, AR and RR ewes, respectively. However, EEconceptus was significantly lower in AR (135 kJ/kg x d(-1)) in comparison with AA (298 kJ/kg x d(-1)) and RR (252 kJ/kg x d(-1)) ewes. In conclusion, exposure nutrient restriction in early life impairs the ability of ewes to respond to nutritional restriction in terms of energy expenditure of gestation.  相似文献

Weight gain is common among postobese individuals, providing an opportunity to address the cost of weight regain on energy expenditure. We investigated the energy cost of weight regain over 1 yr in 28 women [age 39.5 +/- 1.3 (SE) yr; body mass index 24.2 +/- 0.5 kg/m(2)] with recent weight loss (>12 kg). Body composition, total energy expenditure (TEE) using doubly labeled water, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and thermic effect of a meal (TEM) were assessed at 0 and 12 mo. Metabolizable energy intake (MEI) was calculated from TEE and change in body composition. Fourteen women had a weight gain of 13.2 +/- 2.1 kg. Twelve-month cumulative excess MEI, calculated as the intake in excess of TEE at month 0, was 749 +/- 149 MJ. Of this, 462 +/- 83 MJ (62%) were stored as accrued tissue, and 287 +/- 72 MJ (38%) was increased TEE. Expressed per kilogram of body weight gain, the energy cost of weight gain was calculated to be 54.8 +/- 4.6 MJ/kg. Interestingly, weight regain time courses fell into three distinct patterns, possibly requiring varying countermeasures.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of two approaches (mathematical transformation and statistical procedures), used to account for body composition [body mass or fat-free mass (FFM)], on associations between two measures of physical activity and energy expenditure determined by doubly labeled water (DLW). Complete data for these analyses were available for 136 African American (44.1%) and Hispanic (55.9%) women (mean age 50 +/- 7.3 yr). Total energy expenditure (TEE) by DLW was measured over 14 days. Physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) was computed as 0.90 x TEE - resting metabolic rate. During week 2, participants wore an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days and completed a 7-day diary. Pearson's product-moment correlations and three statistical procedures (multiple regressions, partial correlations, and allometric scaling) were used to assess the effect of body composition on associations. The methods-comparison analysis was used to study the effect of body composition on agreement. The statistical procedures demonstrated that associations improved when body composition was included in the model. The accelerometer explained a small but meaningful portion of the variance in TEE and PAEE after body mass was accounted for. The methods-comparison analysis confirmed that agreement with DLW was affected by the transformation. Agreement between the diary (transformed with body mass) and TEE reflected the association that exists between body mass and TEE. These results suggest that the accelerometer and diary accounted for a small portion of TEE and PAEE. Most of the variance in DLW-measured energy expenditure was explained by body mass or FFM.  相似文献

During doubly-labelled water (DLW) experiments, blood collection by venous puncture may traumatize animals and consequently affect the animals' behaviour and energy budget. Recent studies have shown that blood-sucking bugs (Triatominae; Heteroptera) can be used instead of conventional needles to obtain blood from animals. In this paper, we validate the bug method in captive nectar-feeding bats, Glossophaga soricina, for water budget analysis by comparing the daily water flux estimated with the DLW method with values measured by an energy balance method. As the mean daily water flux of the DLW method was not significantly deviating from the expected value, blood-sucking bugs may substitute more invasive methods of blood collection in DLW experiments. Based on the DLW estimates, daily energy and water intake rates were calculated and compared to values measured with the energy balance method. The DLW method and the energy balance method yielded on average similar results regarding the daily energy intake (DLW method: 48.8+/-14.2 kJ d(-1) versus energy balance method: 48.1+/-9.9 kJ d(-1)) and daily water intake (DLW method: 13.7+/-2.4 mL d(-1) versus energy balance method: 14.7+/-3.0 mL d(-1)). Based on the calculated water and sugar intake per day, we estimated the sugar concentration of ingested nectar to equal on average 16.2+/-2.4% (mass/mass), which fell close to the measured sugar concentration of 17% (mass/mass) bats fed on during the experiment. We conclude that it is possible to extrapolate mean daily energy and water intake for animal groups, populations and species based on DLW estimates, but due to the large variance of results (low accuracy), it seems inadequate to calculate values for single individuals.  相似文献

The thermic effect of feeding (TEF: increase in energy expenditure following acute energy intake) is an important physiological determinant of total daily energy expenditure and thus energy balance. Approximately 40% of TEF is believed to be mediated by sympathoadrenal activation and consequent beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation of metabolism. In sedentary adults, acute administration of ascorbic acid, a potent antioxidant, augments the thermogenic response to beta-adrenergic stimulation. We hypothesized that acute ascorbic acid administration augments TEF in sedentary overweight and obese adults. Energy expenditure was determined (ventilated hood technique) before and 4 h after consumption of a liquid-mixed meal (caloric equivalent 40% of resting energy expenditure (REE)) in 11 sedentary, overweight/obese adults (5 men, 6 women; age: 24 +/- 2 years; BMI: 28.5 +/- 1.0 kg/m(2) (mean +/- s.e.)) on two separate, randomly ordered occasions: during continuous intravenous administration of saline (placebo control) and/or ascorbic acid (0.05 g/kg fat-free mass). Acute ascorbic acid administration prevented the increase in plasma concentration of oxidized low-density lipoprotein in the postprandial state (P = 0.04), but did not influence REE (1,668 +/- 107 kcal/day vs.1,684 +/- 84 kcal/day; P = 0.91) or the area under the TEF response curve (33.4 +/- 2.4 kcal vs. 30.5 +/- 3.6 kcal; P = 0.52) (control vs. ascorbic acid, respectively). Furthermore, acute ascorbic acid administration had no effect on respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate, or arterial blood pressure in the pre- and postabsorptive states (all P > 0.64). These data imply that the attenuated TEF commonly observed with sedentary lifestyle and obesity is not modulated by ascorbic acid-sensitive oxidative stress.  相似文献

Metabolic equivalent: one size does not fit all.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The metabolic equivalent (MET) is a widely used physiological concept that represents a simple procedure for expressing energy cost of physical activities as multiples of resting metabolic rate (RMR). The value equating 1 MET (3.5 ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) or 1 kcal x kg(-1) x h(-1)) was first derived from the resting O2 consumption (VO2) of one person, a 70-kg, 40-yr-old man. Given the extensive use of MET levels to quantify physical activity level or work output, we investigated the adequacy of this scientific convention. Subjects consisted of 642 women and 127 men, 18-74 yr of age, 35-186 kg in weight, who were weight stable and healthy, albeit obese in some cases. RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry using a ventilated hood system, and the energy cost of walking on a treadmill at 5.6 km/h was measured in a subsample of 49 men and 49 women (26-45 kg/m2; 29-47 yr). Average VO2 and energy cost corresponding with rest (2.6 +/- 0.4 ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) and 0.84 +/- 0.16 kcal x kg(-1) x h(-1), respectively) were significantly lower than the commonly accepted 1-MET values of 3.5 ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) and 1 kcal x kg(-1) x h(-1), respectively. Body composition (fat mass and fat-free mass) accounted for 62% of the variance in resting VO2 compared with age, which accounted for only 14%. For a large heterogeneous sample, the 1-MET value of 3.5 ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) overestimates the actual resting VO2 value on average by 35%, and the 1-MET of 1 kcal/h overestimates resting energy expenditure by 20%. Using measured or predicted RMR (ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) or kcal x kg(-1) x h(-1)) as a correction factor can appropriately adjust for individual differences when estimating the energy cost of moderate intensity walking (5.6 km/h).  相似文献

To determine whether female athletes have unusually low energy requirements as suggested by many food intake studies, energy expenditure (EE) and intake were assessed in nine elite distance runners [26 +/- 3 (SD) yr, 53 +/- 4 kg, 12 +/- 3% body fat, and 66 +/- 4 ml.kg-1.min-1 maximal O2 uptake]. Subjects were admitted to a metabolic ward for 40 h during which 24-h sedentary EE was measured in a respiratory chamber. Free-living EE was then assessed by the doubly labeled water method for the next 6 days while the women recorded all food intake, daily body weight, and training mileage (10 +/- 3 miles/day). Energy intakes estimated from free-living EE (2,826 +/- 312 kcal/day) and body weight changes (-84 +/- 71 g/day) averaged 221 +/- 550 kcal/day in excess of those calculated from food records (2,193 +/- 466 kcal/day). The energy cost of training (1,087 +/- 244 kcal/day) was calculated as the difference between free-living EE and 24-h EE in the respiratory chamber (1,681 +/- 84 kcal/day) corrected for the thermic effect of food of the extra energy intake. These data do not support the hypothesis that training as a distance runner results in metabolic adaptations that lower energy requirements in women.  相似文献

Because the effect of exercise on leptin was not established, we controlled energy intake (I) and exercise energy expenditure (E) to distinguish the independent effects of energy availability (A = I - E) and exercise stress (everything associated with exercise except its energy cost) on the diurnal leptin rhythm in healthy young women. In random order, we set A = 45 and 10 kcal. kg lean body mass(-1) (LBM) x day(-1) for 4 days during the early follicular phase of separate menstrual cycles in sedentary (S, n = 7) and exercising (X, n = 9: E = 30 kcal x kg LBM(-1) x day(-1)) women. Low energy availability suppressed the 24-h mean (P < 10(-6)) and amplitude (P < 10(-5)), whereas exercise stress did not (both P > 0.2). Suppressions of the 24-h mean (-72 +/- 3 vs. -53 +/- 3%, P < 0.001) and amplitude (-85 +/- 3 vs. -58 +/- 6%, P < 0.001) were more extreme in S vs. X than previously reported effects on luteinizing hormone pulsatility and carbohydrate availability. Thus the diurnal rhythm of leptin depends on energy, or carbohydrate, availability, not intake, and exercise has no suppressive effect on the diurnal rhythm of leptin beyond the impact of its energy cost on energy availability.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in energy intake or energy expenditure that distinguish overweight/obese women with and without binge eating disorder (BED). Seventeen overweight/obese women with BED and 17 overweight/obese controls completed random 24-h dietary recall interviews, and had total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) assessed by the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique with concurrent food log data collection. Participants received two baseline dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans and had basal metabolic rate (BMR) and thermic effect of food (TEF) measured using indirect calorimetry. Results indicated no between group differences in TDEE, BMR, and TEF. As in our previous work, according to dietary recall data, the BED group had significantly higher caloric intake on days when they had binge eating episodes than on days when they did not (3,255 vs. 2,343 kcal). There was no difference between BED nonbinge day intake and control group intake (2,233 vs. 2,140 kcal). Similar results were found for food log data. Dietary recall data indicated a trend toward higher average daily intake in the BED group (2,587 vs. 2,140 kcal). Furthermore, when comparing TDEE to dietary recall and food log data, both groups displayed significant under-reporting of caloric intake of similar magnitudes ranging from 20 to 33%. Predicted energy requirements estimated via the Harris-Benedict equation (HBE) underestimated measured TDEE by 23-24%. Our data suggest that increased energy intake reported by BED individuals is due to increased food consumption and not metabolic or under-reporting differences.  相似文献

Accelerometers are a promising tool for characterizing physical activity patterns in free living. The major limitation in their widespread use to date has been a lack of precision in estimating energy expenditure (EE), which may be attributed to the oversimplified time-integrated acceleration signals and subsequent use of linear regression models for EE estimation. In this study, we collected biaxial raw (32 Hz) acceleration signals at the hip to develop a relationship between acceleration and minute-to-minute EE in 102 healthy adults using EE data collected for nearly 24 h in a room calorimeter as the reference standard. From each 1 min of acceleration data, we extracted 10 signal characteristics (features) that we felt had the potential to characterize EE intensity. Using these data, we developed a feed-forward/back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) model with one hidden layer (12 x 20 x 1 nodes). Results of the ANN were compared with estimations using the ActiGraph monitor, a uniaxial accelerometer, and the IDEEA monitor, an array of five accelerometers. After training and validation (leave-one-subject out) were completed, the ANN showed significantly reduced mean absolute errors (0.29 +/- 0.10 kcal/min), mean squared errors (0.23 +/- 0.14 kcal(2)/min(2)), and difference in total EE (21 +/- 115 kcal/day), compared with both the IDEEA (P < 0.01) and a regression model for the ActiGraph accelerometer (P < 0.001). Thus ANN combined with raw acceleration signals is a promising approach to link body accelerations to EE. Further validation is needed to understand the performance of the model for different physical activity types under free-living conditions.  相似文献

A follow-up study was conducted to re-evaluate a group of obese middle-aged women (n = 13), eight of whom had completed an 18-wk supervised (3 d/wk) plus unsupervised (2 d/wk) conditioning intervention program (at least 90 min per day) as the exercise plus diet group; while five of the remainder served as the control group. Each session had included a 25- to 45-min jog/run at intensities between the heart rate (HR) corresponding to lactate threshold (LT) and that slightly above the HR @ LT. During 1 year following the program, the women participated in self-controlled training such as running, aerobic dancing, or jazz dancing 2.6 +/- 1.1 d/wk. Dietary intake averaged approximately 1736 +/- 152 kcal/d at the pre-treatment, 1404 +/- 124 kcal/d at the post-treatment, and 1645 +/- 147 kcal/d 1 year after the post-treatment. Interestingly however, oxygen uptake corresponding to LT (VO2 @ LT), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), weight, systolic blood pressure, and the ratio of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to total cholesterol (HDLC/TC) observed 1 year after the post-treatment were significantly different from the original pre-treatment and/or mid-treatment values. For instance, the significant 42% increase (14.7 +/- 2.4----21.3 +/- 4.2 ml/kg/min) in VO2 @ LT and 18% increase (0.284 +/- 0.106----0.335 +/- 0.093) in HDLC/TC from the pre-test to post-test were maintained throughout the 1-year follow-up period, suggesting no detrimental effect either on a cardiorespiratory fitness factor or on an anti-atherogenic factor. These findings indicate that physiologic status of obese middle-aged women engaged in a conditioning intervention program may not regress to pre-treatment status for at least one year after completion; provided they continue to participate in a 2.6-d/wk self-controlled training program with dietary intake of 1600-1700 kcal/d. Another interesting finding was that significant relationships existed between individual changes (delta) in training frequency and individual changes (delta) in physiologic variables (i.e., delta VO2max, delta VO2 @ LT, delta WT, delta fat, and delta HDLC/TC) during the follow-up study. It is concluded that, although the improved physiologic status of obese women can be maintained fairly well during 1 year following the conditioning program; continuation of training (3 d/wk or more) should be critical, either supervised or self-controlled, for successful maintenance of lost weight (8.2 +/- 2.9 kg) and improved fitness.  相似文献

Aerobic dance has been purported to help with weight management; however, it is not known if various forms of dance are as effective as traditional modalities. This study estimated energy expenditure by heart rate for 28 women participating in 4 modes of aerobic dance (Bodycombat [i.e., TAEBO]; Pump; Step; and RPM [i.e., spinning]) compared to 2 running speeds. Pump had significantly (p < 0.01) lower energy expenditure (8.0 +/- 1.6 kcal.min(-1)) compared to the other classes (RPM: 9.9 +/- 1.9 kcal.min(-1); Step: 9.6 +/- 1.8 kcal.min(-1); and Bodycombat: 9.7 +/- 2.0 kcal.min(-1)) and running at 8.05 km.h(-1) (9.16 +/- 1.53 kcal.min(-1)). Also, Step (p < 0.01), Bodycombat (p < 0.01), and RPM (p < 0.01) had significantly higher caloric expenditures than running at 8.05 km.h(-1) but significantly lower than running at 8.37 km.h(-1) (10.30 +/- 1.72 kcal.min(-1)). In conclusion, RPM, Bodycombat, and Step aerobics were equally as effective as jogging between 8.05 and 8.37 km.h(-1), and they met American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for weight modification and maintenance. Additionally, heart rate assessment provided a quantitative method for estimating energy expenditure and the effectiveness of different aerobic programs.  相似文献
