The pelagic eggs, yolk-sac and pelagic larvae of the macrourid fish, Coryphaenoides marginatus, from Suruga Bay in southern Japan, are described. The identification of the pelagic eggs based on 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences agreed with that obtained from morphological analyses. The spherical eggs, 1.14–1.30 mm in diameter, contained a single oil globule 0.30–0.38 mm in diameter, and had hexagonally patterned ornamentation on the chorion, 0.025–0.033 mm in width. Many melanophores were present on the anterodorsal region of the embryo after the caudal end had detached from the yolk. Within a day after hatching, each of the yolk-sac larvae had a body axis that was bent slightly at the anterior trunk region, many dorsal and lateral melanophores on the trunk plus several on the gut, and small irregular wrinkles on the dorsal and anal fin membranes. The pelagic larvae had a short caudal region in comparison to other known congeners (length 2.0–3.2+ times head length vs. 4–7, respectively), a short stalked pectoral fin base, and no elongate first dorsal and pelvic fin rays. They were further characterized by the presence of numerous very dense melanophores from just behind the eye to the anterior part of the caudal region at 5.1 mm head length (25.8+ mm total length). The significant difference in vertical distribution between the pelagic eggs and larvae (dominant depths ca. 200–350 m vs. ca. 10–100 m, respectively), with no subsequent collection of pelagic larvae with greater than 6 mm head length, indicate two stages (rising and falling) of ontogenic vertical migration.  相似文献

Pelagic eggs and larvae of the macrourid fish Coelorinchus kishinouyei, collected from Suruga Bay, southern Japan and subsequently identified by 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences, are described. The spherical eggs, 1.18–1.31 mm in diameter, contained a single oil globule, 0.28–0.33 mm in diameter, and had hexagonally patterned ornamentation on the chorion, 0.017–0.022 mm in width. Melanophores were present on the embryo, yolk and oil globule after the blastopore had closed. Within 1 day after hatching, the body axis of the yolk-sac larvae was bent slightly at the anterior trunk region. During this stage many melanophores formed on the head, trunk, tail, yolk and oil globule, along with small irregular wrinkles on the dorsal and ventral finfolds. Pelagic eggs (after the caudal end of the embryo had detached from the yolk) and yolk-sac larvae also developed xanthophores on the embryo and yolk, and head, trunk, dorsal and ventral finfolds just before tail tip, and yolk, respectively. The pelagic larvae had a short tail, stalked pectoral-fin base and no elongate first dorsal and pelvic-fin rays. Three clusters of melanophores were present on the tail (anterior two embedded to muscle and one just before tail tip subsequently lost with development) and a cluster around the anus (beyond 3.9 mm head length). Nucleotide sequence analyses of comparative adult specimens appeared to confirm a previous proposal that C. productus is a junior synonym of C. anatirostris.  相似文献

One specimen of leptocephalus larva, measuring 16.0 mm in total length, was collected from the northern part of Suruga Bay (34°56′N, 138°39′E) by the T/V Bosei Maru II of Tokai University on November 7, 1982. This larva is identified asConger myriaster because of having melanophores under the eye, simple gut with melanophores, 142 total number of myomeres and the position of the last vertical blood vessel at the 52nd myomere. Judging from the body length, appearances of teeth and fins, and disposition of the anus, the present larva belongs to the preleptocephalus stage. The presence of this early larva in this area suggests that one of the spawning grounds ofC. myriaster exists in or near Suruga Bay in autumn.  相似文献

Two larvae [17.4 mm standard length: SL (postflexion stage)] and 26.1 mm SL (transformation stage)] and a juvenile (31.7 mm SL) of a phosichthyid, Polymetme elongata, from Suruga Bay and offshore waters, central Japan, are described. These specimens had an elongate body with relatively short preanal length (53–63% SL), long anal fin base (2.6–3.4 times dorsal fin base length), and anal fin origin below dorsal fin base, and were further characterized by a blackish flap on each eye and internal clusters of melanophores (e.g., along caudal myosepta around midlateral line and on ventral margin of caudal peduncle). The short preanal length and larval melanophore pattern were very similar to those of another phosichthyid, Yarrella blackfordi, from the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

A new species of marine hatchetfish,Polyipnus surugaensis, is described based on a specimen collected from Suruga Bay, Japan. This species is distinguished from congeners by the following character combination: the 3rd supra-abdominal photophore is higher in position than the 2nd; the predorsal dark pigmented area does not reach to the median line of the body and is separated from the subdorsal dark pigmented area; the posterior vomerine shaft is toothless.  相似文献

Preflexion to postflexion larvae (2.1–8.0 mm) of Diagramma pictum (Haemulidae) occur in coastal Tosa Bay, Japan from May to September. They can be distinguished from the other haemulid larvae by head spination, location of anus, and melanophore patterns. Compared with larvae identified as the same species from Australia, there are significantly morphological differentiations between the two areas. Thus, these significant differences are likely a reflection of subspecific differences.  相似文献

Three pelagic larvae [5.1–5.9 mm in head length (80+ to 101+ mm in total length)] of a macrourid fish, Ventrifossa garmani, from Suruga Bay and offshore waters of central Japan are described. The specimens were characterized by a remarkably elongate caudal region (caudal region length >15.6 times head length), the longest known to date among macrourid larvae and juveniles. Other characteristics included a short snout, first dorsal and pelvic fin rays not elongated, external melanophores on most of the body and posteriorly on the anal fin membrane, and six or seven rectangular clusters of internal melanophores laterally on the anterior caudal region.  相似文献

A total of 211 larval and juvenileNibea mitsukurii (4.0–19.0 mm SL) was collected with a small seine in surf zones of Tosa Bay during the period of May 1981 to June 1984. They had morphological characteristics common to the larvae and juveniles of Sciaenidae, but were distinguished from the others by the distribution pattern of melanophores on body and spines at the anterior tip of maxillary. They occurred only in surf zone of Tei out of three locations facing Tosa Bay from middle May to middle August. Temperatures and salinities at the place when they were collected ranged from 21.7 to 29.5°C and from 24.5 to 31.3‰, respectively. Good catches were observed when minute dusts floated abundantly in the surf zone. In past studies using traditional larval nets or minnow-nets in coastal or shallow waters of Tosa Bay, larval and juvenileN. mitsukurii were not reported. It seems that they occur in association with minute dusts in extremely shallow waters such as surf zones.  相似文献

A pelagic juvenile (43.0 mm standard length) of the deep-sea gadiform fish Halargyreus johnsonii was collected by a larva net towed at depths from 200 m to 90 m at Suruga Bay, Japan. The specimen had an elongate body, eyes located dorsally on the head, a depressed anal fin, small bony tubercles on the lower jaw symphysis, elongate pelvic fin rays, and a pointed caudal fin. The body was silver with numerous small black spots. The gut was filled with a copepod, Pareuchaeta russelli, that is characterized by a surface to mesopelagic distribution. Phoronid larvae were found in planktonic samples from the northern coast of Terpeniya Bay. In some samples, their density was up to 220 specimens/m3. Larval stages having 10, 12, 16, 20, and 22 tentacles are described. Larvae were identified as Actinotrocha branchiata and belong to the species Phoronis muelleri Selys-Longchamps, 1903. However, unlike the Ph. muelleri larvae described in the literature, the larvae we found are smaller (not more than 900 μm) before metamorphosis and have fewer tentacles (24). They lack paired vacuolated diverticula of the stomach, which are characteristic of Ph. muelleri larvae. However, judging by all other characters, namely transparency, the absence of coelomic cylinder in the preoral lobe, and the presence of adult tentacle primordia, one pair of blood cell aggregations, and a pyriform organ, these larvae are similar to the previously described larvae of Ph. muelleri. Adult forms of Ph. muelleri were previously found in Terpeniya Bay and described by Mamkaev (1962) and Emig (1984).  相似文献

The vertical distribution of Alexandrium tamarense/ catenella (hereinafter Alexandrium spp.) cysts was investigated with special attention to living cysts filled with fresh protoplasm and empty cysts. In addition, based on the incubation experiments of Alexandrium spp. cysts, the germination ability of the cysts was examined. A sediment core 63 cm in length, collected from Kure Bay of the Seto Inland Sea, West Japan, in September 2000, was provided for an analysis on the vertical distribution of Alexandrium spp. cysts. Samples from every 1 cm interval depth from the top down to 13 cm depth of the same core were taken to examine the germination ability of the cysts. Results show that Alexandrium spp. cysts were continuously observed from 59 to 60 cm depth to the top. The cyst densities in the upper parts of the core (from 9 to 10 cm depth to the top) were much more abundant those that in the lower parts (below 10–11 cm depth). The relationship between living and empty cysts in each depth did not reveal a positive correlation with the sediment depth. Based on the sedimentation rate of the core sediment (approximately 1.6 cm/year), Alexandrium spp. cysts have been produced since 1962, and a remarkable increase of these cysts was observed from ca 1993. Such a rapid increase of Alexandrium spp. cysts has probably been as a result of dense blooms of A. tamarense occurring since 1992 in Hiroshima Bay, including Kure Bay. The germination of Alexandrium spp. cysts was observed in samples collected from the top to 12–13 cm depth of the core. It suggests that the Alexandrium spp. cysts can keep the germination ability for more than 8 years.  相似文献

Larval developments ofPempheris xanthoptera andP. japonica were described on 31 (6.45–22.40 mm SL) and 5 (10.35–35.70 mm SL) specimens, respectively, with particular attention to cartilaginous development. Comparison between the two species indicated thatP. xanthoptera was discriminated fromP. japonica by the following key characters: two supracleithral spines (one inP. japonica); longer pectoral fin; shorter ventral fin; and absence of melanophore on mid-ventral part of lower jaw and anterolateral region of trunk, and web of ventral fin.  相似文献

Cell densities of toxic phytoplankton species responsible for diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) were monitored at a sampling site in Mutsu Bay, Japan, in 1995.Dinophysis fortii almost completely dominated the toxic phytoplankton community. Okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) contents in bothD. fortii cells and midgut glands of scallops collected at the same sampling site were determined by HPLC — fluorometry. DTX1 was detected fromD. fortii and scallops. The contents of DTX1 inD. fortii changed markedly during the experimental periods (5–252 pg cell–1). The highest concentration of DTX1 in the midgut glands of scallops coincided with the period of relatively high cell densities ofD. fortii with the highest content of DTX1 (252 pg cell–1). The results demonstrate that toxin content in the cells is an important factor affecting the toxicity of shellfish.  相似文献

Bacteria were readily isolated from the hemolymph of a majority (88%) of the blue crabs collected from Galveston Bay, Texas. The hemolymph of most crabs contained moderate (greater than 10(3) bacteria/ml) to heavy (greater than (10(5) bacteria/ml) infections. Large variances were observed in the bacterial number associated with individual crabs, but no significant difference was observed between the mean bacterial levels in the hemolymph of crabs collected during different seasons of the sampling year. Vibrio spp. were the predominant bacterial types in the hemolymph of infected crabs and increased in number significantly during the summer season. Warmer water temperatures were thought to be responsible for this increase. Bacterial numbers and the percentage of Vibrio spp. were highest in the interior of the crab bodies, especially in the digestive tract. The exterior of the crabs did not appear to be the source of the hemolymph's bacterial flora. Bacteria taxonomically identical to Vibrio cholerae. V. vulnificus, and V. parahaemolyticus were routinely isolated from the crab hemolymph and external carapace. V. parahaemolyticus was the most prevalent of the pathogenic Vibrio spp. and was isolated from 23% of the hemolymph samples. V. vulnificus (7%) and V. cholerae (2%) occurred less commonly in the hemolymph. The incidences of V. parachaemolyticus and V. vulnificus were related and increased in the summer months. Both organisms were frequently isolated from the same crab.  相似文献
