Several interpretations concerning the relationships of the Psilotaceae are discussed. The conclusion that the Psilotaceae are filicalean ferns is defended. New evidence which has appeared since earlier papers on the subject confirms this basic conclusion.  相似文献

Correlations between habitat and seed size suggest that this character is adaptive. Mean seed size is a relatively invariant species characteristic and seed size has marked effects upon fitness. These observations have previously led to the conclusion that seed size is under stabilizing selection. This conclusion, originally based mainly on evidence from crop plants grown in controlled environments, is questioned here on the grounds that recent studies of wild plants show marked phenotypic plasticity and low heritability of seed size. If seed size is not readily altered by natural selection in the wild, then its effects on fitness are evidence that this character is a constraint on habitat distribution. Constancy of mean seed size may be due to developmental canalization to a size set by previous selection, rather than a continuing process of stabilizing selection.  相似文献

There is mounting evidence that MHC class I peptide ligands are predominantly generated from defective ribosomal products and other classes of polypeptides degraded rapidly (t1/2 < 10 min) following their synthesis. The most direct evidence supporting this conclusion is the rapid inhibition of peptide ligand generation following cycloheximide-mediated inhibition of protein synthesis. In this study, we show that this linkage is due to depleting the pool of rapidly degraded proteins, and not to interference with other protein synthesis-dependent processes. Our findings indicate that in the model systems used in this study, MHC class I peptides are preferentially generated from rapidly degraded polypeptides relative to slowly degraded proteins. This conclusion is supported by the properties of peptide presentation from slowly degraded (t1/2 = 4 h) defective ribosomal products generated artificially by incorporation of the amino acid analog canavanine into a model viral Ag. We propose that specialized machinery exists to link protein synthesis with class I peptide ligand generation to enable the rapid detection of viral gene expression.  相似文献

Ruminate endosperm is characterized by its uneven and enlarged surface. A list of 58 angiosperm families in which this trait is known to occur is presented. The simultaneous presence of different rumination types in angiosperms and even within single families leads to the conclusion that ruminate endosperm has originated several times in parallel. Therefore, the mere occurrence of rumination does not provide evidence for phylogenetic hypotheses. Nevertheless, rumination features can provide valuable characters for taxonomic purposes, if structural and ontogenetic evidence is considered.  相似文献

In this article, sex differences in nonhuman primate social grooming are reviewed. In general, female nonhuman primates groom more than do males. Abstract It is widely believed that there is a growing body of evidence that sieve plate pores in functioning phloem are open and quite free from obstruction. The arguments used to establish this idea are critically examined one by one and the conclusion is reached that it has very little foundation in published work. On the contrary, the view that sieve plate pores are delicately-occluded with P-protein in the angiosperms has much more evidence to substantiate it. Since ‘open’ and ‘occluded’ are physiologically defined this means that the pressure-flow hypothesis must be regarded as seriously in doubt.  相似文献

Age was determined in three anuran species inhabiting a temperate oceanic climate ( Rana temporaria, Bufo calamita and Bufo bufo ) by means of the histological structure of the phalanges. Narrow, haematoxylinophilic lines were visible in these, and evidence from the examination of subadults and frog ( R. temporaria ) recaptures showed the lines to be annual. The validity of using the lines as age indicators was tested most extensively on natural frog populations and the effects of endosteal resorption were not found to be significant. The evidence for this conclusion was provided directly by recapture data and indirectly by an analysis of histological measurements made on the phalanges.  相似文献

This review summarizes the types of evidence that can be invoked in order to demonstrate that a virally encoded protein possesses ion channel activity that is intrinsic to the life cycle of the virus. Ion channel activity has been proposed to be a key step in the life cycle of influenza virus, and the protein responsible for this activity has been proposed to be the M2 protein encoded by the virus. This review contrasts the evidence supporting the conclusion that the A/M2 protein of influenza A virus has intrinsic ion channel activity with the evidence that the 3AB protein encoded by the human rhinovirus possesses intrinsic ion channel activity.  相似文献

In this paper we address the question: How do replicating mammalian cells remember with high fidelity their proper state of differentiation? Several possible mechanisms for cell memory are discussed, and it is concluded that only mechanisms involving DNA methylation are supported by strong experimental evidence. This evidence is reviewed. The establishment and modulation of methylation patterns are discussed and a hemimethylation model for stem cells is presented. The overall conclusion is that, although little is yet known about the details, there should be little doubt about the existence of a methylation system functioning at least to aid cell memory.  相似文献

This paper discusses the new national guidelines for a systematic screening programme to detect sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in the population of people with diabetes in England. A review of the literature examines the evidence base to support screening interventions and effective management and treatments in diabetic retinopathy. The current evidence supports the establishment of a digital retinal photography system using pupil dilation. A Policy Advisory Group has been formulated by the National Screening Committee to guide the meeting of this target in England. A conclusion is made that with increased effort and organisation, health care professionals can ensure that the screening programme is successfully implemented and rates of visual impairment and blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy can be reduced significantly.  相似文献

This paper documents the evidence that the large oligomeric glycoprotein complexes of unknown function first isolated as 22S particles from sea urchin embryos are the sole agents responsible for the adhesive integrity of sea urchin blastula embryos. The conclusion rests on the demonstration that polyclonal IgG (as serum or monovalent Fab) against whole membranes or butanol-solubilized components of membranes, as well as against the purified particle itself, completely blocks reaggregation of dissociated blastula cells and that this inhibition is reversed by neutralization of the inhibitory antibodies with purified 22S antigen. An essential aspect of the evidence is the combination of quantitative endpoint titrations in microtiter wells with the qualitative parameters of morphogenesis. The new data complement previous evidence that morphogenesis is mediated by a general class of particles, toposomes, responsible for mechanical linkage between cells and their positional guidance in embryogenesis.  相似文献

Two lines of evidence have been cited to support the assertion that the root cap is the sole site of graviperception in the root. The first evidence is based on surgical removal of the cap, which abolishes the response to gravity. This is sufficient to conclude that the cap is involved in gravitropism, but not to conclude that the cap is the site of graviperception. The second is based on the results of centrifugation experiments, in which different parts of the plant are subjected to different centrifugal forces. The data from such experiments have been cited to support the conclusion that the perception of gravity is limited to the rootcap. However, these data actually support the conclusion that gravity is perceived throughout the root tip, and not only in the root cap. We believe that the data support the conclusion that the root cap is involved in root gravitropism, but that there is inadequate evidence to conclude that the cap is the sole site of graviperception.  相似文献

This brief review considers the potential role of melatonin in the processes of aging, the prolongation of life span and health in the aged. Studies completed to date generally suggest that exogenously administered melatonin may serve to extend life span in invertebrates, but evidence supporting this conclusion in mammals is less compelling. Thus, any conclusion regarding a role for melatonin in extending normal longevity, particularly in mammals, would be premature. With regard to deferring the signs of chemically-induced neurodegenerative conditions in experimental animals, the data are remarkably strong and there is a modicum of evidence that in humans with debilitating diseases melatonin may have some beneficial actions. Indeed, this should be one focus of future research since as the number of elderly increases in the population, the frequency of costly age-related diseases will become increasingly burdensome to both the patient and to society as a whole.  相似文献

Susceptibility to drug toxicity is influenced by a variety of factors, both genetic and environmental. The focus of this article is the evidence addressing the hypothesis that inflammation is both a result of and a susceptibility factor for drug toxicity, with an emphasis on liver as a target organ. Results of studies suggesting a role for inflammatory mediators in the hepatotoxicity caused by acetaminophen or ethanol are discussed. For several drugs, the evidence from animal models that concurrent inflammation increases injury is presented. In addition, the occurrence of adverse drug reactions in people with preexisting inflammatory diseases is considered. The special case of idiosyncratic drug reactions is discussed and the potential raised for development of animal models for this type of drug toxicity. The conclusion is that inflammatory factors should be considered as determinants of sensitivity to adverse drug reactions.  相似文献

A previous study with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints found no evidence of genetic impoverishment in the endangered Centaurea borjae and recommended that four management units (MUs) should be designated. Nevertheless, the high ploidy (6x) of this narrow endemic plant suggested that these conclusions should be validated by independent evidence derived from non-nuclear markers. Here, the variable trnT-F region of the plastid genome was sequenced to obtain this new evidence and to provide an historical background for the current genetic structure. Plastid sequences revealed little genetic variation; calling into question the previous conclusion that C. borjae does not undergo genetic impoverishment. By contrast, the conclusion that gene flow must be low was reinforced by the strong genetic differentiation detected among populations using plastid sequences (global FST = 0.419). The spatial arrangement of haplotypes and diversity indicate that the populations currently located at the center of the species range are probable sites of long-persistence whereas the remaining sites may have derived from a latter colonization. From a conservation perspective, four populations contributed most to the allelic richness of the plastid genome of the species and should be given priority. Combined with previous AFLP results, these new data recommended that five, instead of four, MUs should be established. Altogether, our study highlights the benefits of combining markers with different modes of inheritance to design accurate conservation guidelines and to obtain clues on the evolutionary processes behind the present-day genetic structures.  相似文献

Although substantial evidence supports the conclusion that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase is the major regulatory enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, the molecular events involved in the in vivo regulation of this enzyme have remained obscure. In order to study this problem, rats received a single meal consisting of either rat chow or rat chow containing 2% cholesterol. The rats were killed 60 or 120 min after the beginning of feeding, and liver microsomes were prepared by ultracentrifugation. Two phases of inhibition of microsomal HMG-CoA reductase were observed. The first phase of inhibition, observed 60 min after the beginning of cholesterol feeding, was completely reversed by preincubation of the microsomes with purified phosphoprotein phosphatase. The second phase of inhibition, observed 120 min after the beginning of cholesterol feeding, was not reversed by phosphoprotein phosphatase. These results are consistent with the conclusion that phosphorylation of HMG-CoA reductase is the first step in a series of in vivo regulatory events which produce inactivation and ultimately degradation of the enzyme.  相似文献
