The flight behavioral responses of males and females of Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) to corn kernel volatiles, in a wind tunnel, and the determination and identification of the active compounds of corn kernel volatiles were investigated. A wind tunnel bioassay was carried out to test the response of males and females to 15, 30, 60, and 120 g equivalents of corn kernel volatiles. Gas chromatography-electroantennography was used to determine which components in corn kernel volatiles elicited an EAD response using male and female antennae. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique was used to identify the active compounds of corn kernel volatiles. A 60-g equivalent of corn kernel volatiles elicited attractant behavior of unmated males to landing near the source. Mated males and virgin females were not attracted to corn kernel volatiles. The number of mated females landing was significantly higher in 60- and 120-g equivalents of corn kernel volatiles, compared to the other concentrations and the control. The antennae of males and females responded to four active compounds of corn kernel volatiles. Three of these compounds were identified, namely nonanal, decanal, and geranyl acetone. It is suggested that host finding and selection by S. cerealella is associated with its host volatiles.  相似文献

Pioneer herbivorous insects may find their host plants through a combination of visual and constitutive host‐plant volatile cues, but once a site has been colonized, feeding damage changes the quantity and quality of plant volatiles released, potentially altering the behavior of conspecifics who detect them. Previous work on the pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), demonstrated that this insect can detect and orient to constitutive host plant volatiles released from pepper [Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae)]. Here we investigated the response of the weevil to whole plants and headspace collections of plants damaged by conspecifics. Mated weevils preferred damaged flowering as well as damaged fruiting plants over undamaged plants in a Y‐tube olfactometer. They also preferred volatiles from flowering and fruiting plants with actively feeding weevils over plants with old feeding damage. Both sexes preferred volatiles from fruiting plants with actively feeding weevils over flowering plants with actively feeding weevils. Females preferred plants with 48 h of prior feeding damage over plants subjected to weevil feeding for only 1 h, whereas males showed no preference. When attraction to male‐ and female‐inflicted feeding damage was compared in the Y‐tube, males and females showed no significant preference. Wind tunnel plant assays and four‐choice olfactometer assays using headspace volatiles confirmed the attraction of weevils to active feeding damage on fruiting plants. In a final four‐choice olfactometer assay using headspace collections, we tested the attraction of mated males and virgin and mated females to male and female feeding damage. In these headspace volatile assays, mated females again showed no preference for male feeding; however, virgin females and males preferred the headspace volatiles of plants fed on by males, which contained the male aggregation pheromone in addition to plant volatiles. The potential for using plant volatile lures to improve pepper weevil monitoring and management is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  Wind tunnel and vertical open Y-shaped olfactometer studies are used to test whether volatile cues from the host plant ( Vicia faba ), from conspecific bugs, and from a plant–conspecifics combination, would elicit behavioural responses in mated males and females of Lygus rugulipennis . In the olfactometer, females move towards volatiles from healthy plants but they do not respond to volatiles released by oviposition- and/or feeding-damaged plants without conspecifics, nor to conspecifics alone. Both in the wind tunnel and olfactometer, females respond to volatiles emitted by the plant–insect complex. By contrast, in the wind tunnel, both sexes move significantly towards damaged host plants, even if the presence of conspecifics on these plants enhances only the female response. However, the presence of eggs from conspecifics on host plants reduces the responses of both sexes in the wind tunnel. Finally, males, as well as females, are less responsive to conspecifics alone compared with damaged plants, especially when conspecifics are present on the host plants (host plant– Lygus complex). The results suggest that volatiles emitted by plants and conspecifics influence L.   rugulipennis behaviour, giving information to both sexes on the presence of suitable host plants that have been colonized by other conspecifics acting as pioneers, or providing information on the presence of an already exploited host plant (presence of eggs), thus preventing competition. Males also can use this information to increase the probability of encountering mature females.  相似文献

The responses of females of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) to volatile and contact chemicals from its host Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer and under open arena conditions. In the Y-tube tests, volatiles from virgin males and from females in a preovipositional state attracted T. basalis females, while volatiles from host virgin females did not. In an open arena, traces left by N. viridula adults in different physiological conditions function as contact cues inducing the wasps to remain longer in the arena and to change the pattern of their walking behavior. However, only contact kairomones from N. viridula mated females in a preovipositional condition induced an arrestment response characterized by an increase in patch searching time and turning rates and a reduction in linear speed. The chemical ecological implications of these results on this host–parasitoid association are discussed.  相似文献

The behavioral responses of Hylamorpha elegans L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) to the semiochemicals released from conspecific individual adults were studied, with particular attention paid to female attraction of males. Odors released from virgin females significantly attracted male conspecifics in both the field and laboratory olfactometer and wind tunnel bioassays. However, females did not attract other females, and males attracted no one. The response of male H. elegans to (1) compounds (1,4-hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone) released only by unmated females; (2) the essential oil of the secondary host (Nothofagus obliqua); and (3) the blend of 1,4-hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone with N. obliqua essential oil was studied. The blend of 1,4-benzoquinone mixed with essential oil at the trial concentration was attractive with males. The same response was found with 1,4-hydroquinone alone. The essential oil did not have the expected attractant effect on conspecific males. These results suggest that, when combined with essential oil, 1,4-benzoquinone may function in the sexual behavior of males and females. These findings are discussed in terms of the ecological role of this putative sexual pheromone and its potential use in a strategy of control of this pest.  相似文献

The oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, occurs in Southern Brazil throughout the year, and migrates from peach to apple orchards. Because moths rely on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the host-location process, variations in the emission of these compounds during fruit maturation can influence the time of infestation and preference of the moths for a particular genotype. The aim of this work was to identify VOCs emitted by the apples “Eva” and “Gala” at different stages of development and to determine the behavioral and electrophysiological responses of G. molesta to these compounds. For this purpose, VOCs from immature, maturing, and mature fruits of both cultivars were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The response of the antennae of virgin males and females and mated females to volatiles released by the three fruit stages was registered by gas chromatography coupled to an electroantennography. A dual-choice behavioral test for the different combinations of insect groups and fruit stage was also performed. Amongst the volatiles released by mature fruits, twelve compounds elicited a response. The antennae of the oriental fruit moth did respond to isoamyl hexanoate and α-farnesene emitted by “Eva” maturing fruits. In general, virgin females did not respond to volatiles in olfactometer bioassays and mated females were attracted to volatiles released by mature fruits. Our results show that the variation in the emission during the maturation of fruits can influence the orientation of G. molesta.  相似文献

Finding mates is frequently problematic for parasitoid wasps. In some parasitoid species, males rely on volatile, airborne sex pheromones for locating mates, while in others they rely on contact, trail sex pheromones. This study sought to shed light on the mate finding mechanism of males of Aphytis melinus. Specifically, the goal was to determine whether A. melinus males use airborne or contact pheromones, or both, for locating mates. The study showed that A. melinus males rely on a contact, trail sex pheromone for locating mates: A. melinus males responded to substrate-borne cues left by virgin females, while they did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females. Specifically, males more frequently encountered virgin females when the females walked across an arena to a fixed encounter point compared to when they were manually placed at the encounter point, and spent greater than expected time on surfaces previously visited by virgin females compared to control surfaces not visited by females. In contrast, males did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females in an airflow olfactometer nor to traps baited with virgin females in the field, and spent similar lengths of time on surfaces visited by newly-mated or 24-h mated females versus control surfaces not visited by females. The main effect of the trail sex pheromone on the behavior of A. melinus males was to direct their search and, so, increase the likelihood of encountering mates. This effect apparently is not preceded by longer-range attraction of males via an airborne female sex pheromone. Overall, the results of this study support a hypothesis in which A. melinus males searching on substrates on which females may be present rely exclusively on a trail sex pheromone to locate mates.  相似文献

Chemical communication was shown to play a role in the pear psylla, Cacopsylla bidens. Electrophysiological (EAG) and behavioral responses were investigated in males and females pear psylla . Males were found to be attracted to females, and especially to those on host plants, but not to males, uninfested host plants, or plants infested with conspecific larvae. On the other hand, females were not attracted to males or females but displayed some attraction to host plants. Furthermore, females showed a preference for uninfested pear versus plants infested with conspecific larvae. The antennae of males gave highest electroantenographic response to volatiles from pears infested with females but not males, while females, responded also toward the volatiles of pear alone. These results indicate that females of C. bidens emit sex pheromones that are attractive to the males and suggest that, host volatiles may play a role in host selection by pear psylla females.  相似文献

Tamarixia radiata Waterston (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is an effective idiobiont ectoparasitoid of the psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), vector of the huanglongbing (HLB). We examined the olfactory responses of T. radiata to volatiles emanating from D. citri or plant volatiles using a custom designed T-maze olfactometer and open arena bioassays. We also examined the behavioral response of male and female T. radiata to conspecifics of the opposite sex to determine whether olfactory signals mediate mate location. T. radiata adults exhibited a sexually dimorphic response to volatiles emanating from D. citri and citrus. Female T. radiata responded positively to the odors emanating from D. citri nymphs in both olfactometer and open arena bioassays. However, female wasps showed no response to odors emanating from D. citri adults, D. citri honey dew secretions, intact citrus or orange jasmine leaves. Odors emanating from D. citri damaged citrus were not attractive to T. radiata females but stimulated attraction of wasps to D. citri on damaged plants. T. radiata females were not attracted to D. citri immatures when they were presented as visual cues. Male T. radiata did not show attraction to D. citri nymphs or other putative odors that were attractive to female T. radiata. In olfactometer bioassays, more male T. radiata responded to the odor of female conspecifics than blank controls in the absence of associated citrus host plant volatiles. Odors emanating from female T. radiata were not attractive to male T. radiata. Male or female T. radiata were not attracted to the odors emanating from same sex conspecifics. Both male and female T. radiata adults showed positive phototactic behavior. Collectively, our results provide behavioral evidence that: 1) female T. radiata use volatiles emanating from D. citri nymphs to locate its host and: 2) female T. radiata release a volatile pheromone that attracts male conspecifics.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to study the orientation of adult cigarette beetles,Lasioderma serricorne (F.), to plant volatiles in a walking bioassay. Seven out of sixteen test materials that displayed attractive responses were further studied for (1) responses to whole extracts from three types of solvents and (2) the effects of sex and mating status of L. serricorne on responses to plant volatiles. Bioassays with extracts revealed that responses of L. serricorne varied among the type of solvent extract. Volatiles from different Capsicum products attracted significantly more adult beetles than did volatiles from other materials. When virgin males, virgin females and mated females were bioassayed, mated females responded significantly more than the other groups to plant volatiles. Semiochemical-based pest management methods may be developed for L. serricorne with plant volatile-based attractants that may be identified and used alone or combined with a synthetic sex pheromone to manipulate beetle behavior. The Large Pine Weevil, Hylobius abietis, is one of the most important pests in European coniferous forests. The ectoparasitoid Bracon hylobii is known to cause around 50% larval mortality. Chemical volatiles are among the most important stimuli involved in the host location. In the present study, a 4-arm olfactometer and a 2-choice wind-tunnel were used to test the behavioural responses of B. hylobii females to four odour sources from the host-plant/host-insect complex. For each odour, the behaviour of twenty virgin females was individually recorded in an olfactometer, whereas twenty virgin and twenty mated females were individually tested in a wind-tunnel. The following behavioural parameters were analysed: a) time spent walking; b) time spent stopped; c) total time spent in each arm; d) total speed; e) net speed; f) the rate of turning per unit distance walked; g) rate of turning per second. Comparison between odours shows clear differences in the behavioural parameters analysed. In particular, the bark disc/larva complex is the only odour source able to elicit behavioural responses of both naive and mated females. As strong responses were obtained only using experienced females, this suggests that previous searching activities increase the ability of B. hylobii to find its host.  相似文献

The response of the generalist egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) to host-related chemical cues from tomato plants, Solanum lycopersicum L., and adults of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was investigated in laboratory-based no-choice and paired-choice tests. In Y-tube olfactometer experiments, when female wasps were exposed to volatiles from plants in different conditions, they were attracted only to volatiles produced by N. viridula adult-infested tomato plants. When female wasps were exposed to adults of N. viridula, they were attracted to volatiles from virgin males, and, at a lower level, to volatiles from mated females in preoviposition state. Finally, studies in open arena showed that chemical footprints left by adults of N. viridula did not induce arrestment responses in wasp females. These results are discussed in terms of extrinsic competition with other beneficial egg parasitoids that in field can compete for the same egg mass, since intraguild interactions may affect the success of a biological control program.  相似文献

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is an important worldwide pest of citrus. It vectors three phloem-restricted bacteria in the genus Candidatus Liberibacter that cause huanglongbing (citrus greening disease). Studies were conducted to examine the behavioral responses of male and female D. citri to conspecifics of the same and opposite sex, with and without associated citrus host plants, in both open-air arena choice assays and Y-tube olfactometer assays. Virgin and mated male D. citri colonized citrus plants that were currently or had been previously colonized by virgin or mated female D. citri in greater numbers than control plants without females. However, males or females did not accumulate more on plants colonized by conspecifics of the same sex compared to uninfested plants, and females showed no preference for plants pre-infested with males compared with uninfested controls. In complementary Y-tube olfactometer assays, virgin and mated males chose arms with odor sources from mated females compared with blank controls in the absence of associated citrus host plant volatiles. In both behavioral assays, mated female D. citri appeared more attractive than virgin females. The vibrational calling behavior of male D. citri was reduced when males were challenged by the odors of conspecific mated females relative to when males were challenged by the odor of other males. Collectively, our results provide behavioral evidence for a female-produced volatile sex attractant pheromone in D. citri . Future identification and synthesis of a sex attractant pheromone will be an important contribution to current monitoring and management practices for D. citri .  相似文献

The grape weevil, Naupactus xanthographus Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a polyphagous insect which is a cause of important damage to several economically relevant crops, including grape (Vitis vinifera) and avocado (Persea americana), in several countries of Latin America. The larvae cause damage to the roots and rootlets of plants, and adults feed on leaves of their host plant. Despite its economic importance, there are few reports on the behavioral and nutritional ecology of this weevil. In this context, laboratory feeding and olfactometer bioassays with N. xanthographus were performed. The feeding performance was evaluated by measuring the weight variation of the insects after 1 and 6 h of feeding on grape or avocado leaves, respectively. After 1 h of feeding, insects showed no significant differences in weight increase. However, after a period of 6 h of feeding, males had continued feeding on grape leaves, but not on avocado leaves. Bioassays using a Y-tube olfactometer showed that males are attracted to volatiles of both host plants. Furthermore, starved males and females showed no preference to volatiles of grape or avocado. However, non-starved males and females preferred grape volatiles over avocado volatiles. Based on the combined results of the assays, we conclude that grape is preferred over avocado for N. xanthographus. Furthermore, this is the first report on the effect of starvation on the attraction to host plant volatiles in Curculionidae.  相似文献

The behavioural responses of Apanteles taragamae, a larval parasitoid of the cucumber moth Diaphania indica, to the volatiles of cucumber plants was investigated in a four-arm olfactometer. Females and males were given a choice between several odour sources that included (1) clean air, (2) uninfested, (3) host-infested, and (4) mechanically damaged cucumber plants. Females and males showed different preferences for volatiles emanating from these plants. Females responded significantly longer to the volatiles from uninfested plants than clean air, and to host-infested plants than uninfested plants. There were no significant differences in female responses to the volatiles from mechanically damaged and uninfested plants. Males responded significantly longer to clean air rather than uninfested plants. The volatiles from both uninfested and host-infested cucumber plants may play important roles in host habitat location of A. taragamae females.  相似文献

The classic obligate pollination–seed consumption mutualism between yuccas and yucca moths has been thought to be mediated by chemical cues, but empirical data on pollinator attraction to host floral volatiles in this association have been lacking. Here we show that the scent from virgin flowers of the host Yucca glauca is sufficient to attract its obligate pollinator Tegeticula yuccasella in Y‐tube olfactometer tests. Interestingly, both sexes of moths were attracted to the scent stimulus. Because yucca moths mate inside host flowers, the attraction of both females and males to host floral volatiles is likely to increase encounter rates. In a second test, female moths did not discriminate between virgin and hand‐pollinated flowers, indicating no post‐pollination change in scent production by the host that would lead to a reduction in pollinator attraction and thereby limit exploitation of the available seeds in host flowers. However, other mechanisms that could stabilise the mutualism between T. yuccasella and its yucca hosts have already been documented, i.e. selective abortion of heavily infested flowers, and a female‐derived host‐marking pheromone. Headspace collection and GC–MS were used to identify the blend of floral volatiles emitted by Y. glauca, which was found to be very similar to those of two other allopatric capsular‐fruited species, Y. elata and Y. filamentosa, revealing strong conservation of this trait within Yucca section Chaenocarpa.  相似文献

The ability to learn plant volatiles in Cotesia kariyai females was examined by wind tunnel bioassays. Searching experience on a host-infested corn plant increased subsequent flight responses of females to the infested plant. Females experiencing host by-products together with the volatiles extracted from infested leaves one time showed an increased response. However, such behavioral changes were not observed in females which experienced only the host by-products or the volatiles. Thus, the increased response is considered to be preference learning. Multiple experiences of C. kariyai with host by-products together with the volatiles did not increase their flight response to the volatiles. Furthermore, this learned response gradually decreased within 2 days. These behavioral modifications based on experience would be advantageous for C. kariyai to locate their polyphagous hosts efficiently.  相似文献
