Laboratory microcosms were used to investigate the mud snail Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) bioturbation activities and behavioural changes in response to snail density, algal food, sediment moisture content, light regime and water cover conditions. Density-dependent kinetics of bioturbated muddy areas were described by von Bertalanffy equations, which provided reliable estimates of mud surface covering rates by snail tracks (m2 h−1 snail−1). Snails need a wet habitat to be active either covered by seawater or by moving in fluid layers for low-tide conditions. Light and microphytobenthic biomass, which are less potent to affect snail activity, are positively interrelated to increase covering rates in the tested chl a concentrations within the range of 1-15 μg g−1. Experimental results suggested us the relevance of microphytobenthos migration processes in affecting crawling activities of H. ulvae that appeared to adjust their foraging efforts in response to benthic algal biomass. Behavioural processes of H. ulvae, in terms of floating, crawling, burrowing and inactive snails, were described using a Markov model. Finally, an empirical model based on von Bertalanffy equations was proposed to describe kinetics of sediment covering by snail tracks under the influences of snail density, sediment moisture content, chl a concentrations and the four combinations of presence/absence of light and seawater. This model should provide a base for further development of a hydrosedimentary model to simulate the effects of H. ulvae bioturbation activities on the resuspension of the intertidal cohesive sediment-water interface for various in situ conditions. 相似文献

The effect of macroalgal blooms and the consequent disappearance of Zostera noltii meadows on Hydrobia ulvae population dynamics and production was studied in the Mondego estuary based on data obtained from January 1993 to September 1995. Sampling was carried out at a non-eutrophicated area, covered with Z. noltii, and also at an eutrophicated area, where seasonal Enteromorpha spp. blooms occur.Stable populations represented by individuals of all age classes were found only at the Z. noltii meadows throughout the study period. On the contrary, at the eutrophicated area, during most of the time, solely juveniles were present, with adults appearing only during the macroalgal bloom (>1.5 mm width).During the algal bloom (e.g. 1993), H. ulvae population density was clearly higher in the eutrophicated area due to the combined effect of stronger benthic recruitments (99% of veliger larvae newly recruited) and dispersion of juveniles proceeding from the Z. noltii meadows to this area. On the other hand, in the absence of macroalgae (spring of 1994), 98.9% of veliger larvae was recruited in the Z. noltii meadows. Therefore, H. ulvae seems to respond rapidly to macroalgal dynamics and its presence at the eutrophicated area depends on the existence of green macroalgae.H. ulvae presented the same benthic recruitment pattern at the two sampling areas, with new cohorts being produced in March, June, July and September. Depending on the time of the year in which the recruitment took place, cohorts showed different growth rhythms. However, after 12 months they reached a similar size.A three-generation life cycle involving a short-lived (16 months), fast growing spring generation, a medium growing (17-19 months) summer generation and a longer-lived (20 months) slower growing generation that overwinters is identified. As a general trend, productivity and mean population standing biomass were higher at the Z. noltii meadows, during the entire study, except for a short period, during the macroalgal bloom, when production was higher at the eutrophicated area. On the contrary, P/B? ratios were higher at the eutrophicated area. According to our results, H. ulvae population structure and yearly productivity are clearly affected by eutrophication, namely by the dynamics of macroalgal blooms. In the long run, we may infer that, following the disappearance of the Z. noltii meadows, due to eutrophication, H. ulvae would also tend to disappear, since reproductive adults were almost exclusively found in this area. 相似文献

Increasing recognition is being given to the concept of ‘ecosystem engineers’, which alter the physical nature of the environment and thereby influence other species by means that are neither competitive nor trophic. This paper examines a case study of such effects, in which negative correlations between the abundances of the sandprawn Callianassa kraussi and the eelgrass Zostera capensis imply mutual exclusion because Z. capensis stabilises sediment and inhibits burrowing by C. kraussi, whereas sandprawn bioturbation smothers eelgrass. To test this, we undertook manipulative experiments in which Z. capensis was transplanted into sandflats where C. kraussi was either left undisturbed or eliminated by defaunation. This demonstrated that (1) Z. capensis thrived and expanded in sandflats in the absence of bioturbation but deteriorated and disappeared if C. kraussi was present. (2) In the short term, introduction of Z. capensis reduced densities of C. kraussi, and in established beds of eelgrass, C. kraussi was rare. (3) The mudprawn Upogebia africana was largely restricted to treatments that contained Z. capensis, and its densities were greater in the absence of C. kraussi than in its presence. The presence of eelgrass and the exclusion of C. kraussi also diminished sediment penetrability, suspension of particles and surface burial rates compared to the situation in undisturbed Callianassa-dominated sandflats. These results confirm a mutually negative interaction between C. kraussi and Z. capensis and strengthen the belief that the underlying mechanisms are the antagonistic effects of bioturbation by C. kraussi versus sediment stabilisation by Z. capensis. U. africana seems to benefit directly from Z. capensis but possibly also benefits indirectly from the exclusion of C. kraussi by Z. capensis, since its filter-feeding mode of life requires sufficient sediment stability to maintain semi-permanent U-tubes. 相似文献

The majority of field experiments have been carried out on relatively small spatial and short temporal scales, but some of
the most interesting ecological processes operate at much larger scales. However, large-scale experiments appropriate to the
landscape, often have to be carried out with minimal plot replication and hence reduced statistical power. Here, we report
the results of such a large scale, un-replicated field experiment on the Mondego estuary, Portugal, which nevertheless provides
compelling evidence of the importance of habitat structure for invertebrate community composition and dynamics. In this estuary,
seagrass beds have suffered a dramatic decline over the last 20 years, associated with changes in invertebrate assemblages.
In addition, the most abundant species in the system, Hydrobia ulvae, displays distinctly different population structures in those sites. The aim of the field experiment was to test the hypothesis
that these differences are related to enhanced survival of snails due to protection from avian or fish predators so that they
can grow to larger body sizes in the more complex habitat provided by seagrass. We tested this hypothesis through a large-scale
experiment using artificial seagrass beds over a 12-month period. Adult snail densities were higher in the artificial bed
plots compared to controls. However, these differences emerged only slowly, related to snail growth rate. This suggests that
protection from epibenthic predators can have a significant effect on population structure and hence biomass and productivity
of key species in this system. However, the invertebrate assemblage in artificial seagrass plots and the natural seagrass
bed, remained statistically separate by the end of the experiment.

The effects of cell size of epipelic diatoms and sediment Chl a content (as an index of algal biomass) on the ingestion rate of Hydrobia ulvae adults and juveniles were investigated in experimental microcosms. Results showed that both adults and juveniles ingested small and large diatoms without exhibiting cell size selection behaviour. The functional response of H. ulvae, juveniles (<4 mm) and adults (>4 mm), over a wide range of sediment Chl a content, was characterized by an increase of the ingestion rate according to a power law. Ingestion rate varied from 0.75 to 10 ng Chl a ind−1 h−1 for juveniles and from 1 to 52 ng Chl a ind−1 h−1 for adults, in the range ca. 10-100 μg Chl a (g dry weight sediment)−1. The ingestion rate was about three times higher for adults than for juveniles. Based on these experimental results, we further proposed a mechanistic approach, using an individual based-model, to identify simple feeding mechanisms that might be involved in H. ulvae functional response. 相似文献

Precise temporal and spatial regulation of gene expression during Drosophila oogenesis is essential for patterning the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral body axes. Establishment of the anterior-posterior axis requires posterior localization and translational control of both oskar and nanos mRNAs. Establishment of the dorsal-ventral axis depends on the precise restriction of gurken mRNA and protein to the dorsal-anterior corner of the oocyte. We have previously shown that Glorund, the Drosophila hnRNP F/H homolog, contributes to anterior-posterior axis patterning by regulating translation of nanos mRNA, through a direct interaction with its 3′ untranslated region. To investigate the pleiotropy of the glorund mutant phenotype, which includes dorsal-ventral and nuclear morphology defects, we searched for proteins that interact with Glorund. Here we show that Glorund is part of a complex containing the hnRNP protein Hrp48 and the splicing factor Half-pint and plays a role both in mRNA localization and nurse cell chromosome organization, probably by regulating alternative splicing of ovarian tumor. We propose that Glorund is a component of multiple protein complexes and functions both as a translational repressor and splicing regulator for anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral patterning. 相似文献

The faunal composition of high-shore beds of eelgrass Zostera capensis versus unvegetated sandflats dominated by the sandprawn Callianassa kraussi was investigated by experimentally transplanting plots of eelgrass into sandflats where the sandprawn was either left unmanipulated or eliminated by prior faunal suffocation. After 12 months, multidimensional scaling defined five faunal clusters that were dictated primarily by the presence or absence of eelgrass rather than sandprawns. By 18 months, eelgrass and sandprawns played equal roles in defining faunal clusters. After 30 months, sandprawns had displaced the eelgrass transplants and faunal composition converged on that of sandflat control plots. Most species were either ‘eelgrass-associated’ or ‘sandflat-associated’, but three had unique responses to the treatments: two high-shore species (Assiminea globulus and Hydrobia sp.) that were abundant in eelgrass beds never appeared in the eelgrass transplants, whereas another eelgrass-occupant, Siphonaria compressa, became superabundant on the transplants for 18 months.Unexpectedly, the eelgrass fauna was never more rich or diverse than that of unvegetated sandflats, although abundance was greater in the eelgrass. As hypothesised, the sandflats were disproportionally populated by burrowers and eelgrass by non-burrowers, but a second hypothesis that these habitats should support mainly hard-bodied and soft-bodied animals respectively was rejected. The distinctively different faunas of eelgrass and unvegetated sandflats are seemingly respectively maintained by sediment stabilisation by eelgrass versus bioturbation by sandprawns. The transplants of eelgrass into sandflats developed an eelgrass-associated fauna provided sandprawns were excluded, but ultimately reverted to a sandflat fauna once sandprawns reinvaded. 相似文献

Evolutionary theory of plant defences against herbivores predicts a trade-off between direct (anti-herbivore traits) and indirect defences (attraction of carnivores) when carnivore fitness is reduced. Such a trade-off is expected in plant species that kill herbivore eggs by exhibiting a hypersensitive response (HR)-like necrosis, which should then negatively affect carnivores. We used the black mustard (Brassica nigra) to investigate how this potentially lethal direct trait affects preferences and/or performances of specialist cabbage white butterflies (Pieris spp.), and their natural enemies, tiny egg parasitoid wasps (Trichogramma spp.). Both within and between black mustard populations, we observed variation in the expression of Pieris egg-induced HR. Butterfly eggs on plants with HR-like necrosis suffered lower hatching rates and higher parasitism than eggs that did not induce the trait. In addition, Trichogramma wasps were attracted to volatiles of egg-induced plants that also expressed HR, and this attraction depended on the Trichogramma strain used. Consequently, HR did not have a negative effect on egg parasitoid survival. We conclude that even within a system where plants deploy lethal direct defences, such defences may still act with indirect defences in a synergistic manner to reduce herbivore pressure. 相似文献

Infective L3s (iL3s) of parasitic nematodes share common behavioural, morphological and developmental characteristics with the developmentally arrested (dauer) larvae of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. It is proposed that similar molecular mechanisms regulate entry into or exit from the dauer stage in C. elegans, and the transition from free-living to parasitic forms of parasitic nematodes. In C. elegans, one of the key factors regulating the dauer transition is the insulin-like receptor (designated Ce-DAF-2) encoded by the gene Ce-daf-2. However, nothing is known about DAF-2 homologues in most parasitic nematodes. Here, using a PCR-based approach, we identified and characterised a gene (Hc-daf-2) and its inferred product (Hc-DAF-2) in Haemonchus contortus (a socioeconomically important parasitic nematode of ruminants). The sequence of Hc-DAF-2 displays significant sequence homology to insulin receptors (IR) in both vertebrates and invertebrates, and contains conserved structural domains. A sequence encoding an important proteolytic motif (RKRR) identified in the predicted peptide sequence of Hc-DAF-2 is consistent with that of the human IR, suggesting that it is involved in the formation of the IR complex. The Hc-daf-2 gene was transcribed in all life stages of H. contortus, with a significant up-regulation in the iL3 compared with other stages. To compare patterns of expression between Hc-daf-2 and Ce-daf-2, reporter constructs fusing the Ce-daf-2 or Hc-daf-2 promoter to sequence encoding GFP were microinjected into the N2 strain of C. elegans, and transgenic lines were established and examined. Both genes showed similar patterns of expression in amphidial (head) neurons, which relate to sensation and signal transduction. Further study by heterologous genetic complementation in a daf-2-deficient strain of C. elegans (CB1370) showed partial rescue of function by Hc-daf-2. Taken together, these findings provide a first insight into the roles of Hc-daf-2/Hc-DAF-2 in the biology and development of H. contortus, particularly in the transition to parasitism. 相似文献

Field observations and experimental evidence have shown that bioturbation by the southern African sandprawn Callianassa kraussi may significantly influence the abundance and distribution of the filter-feeding bivalve Eumarcia paupercula and the grazing gastropod Nassarius kraussianus. It was hypothesized that (1) sediment reworking by C. kraussi negatively affects microalgal growth on the sediment surface, leading to a reduction in food intake by N. kraussianus, (2) sediment deposited by C. kraussi will also diminish the food uptake of E. paupercula by interfering with its filtration mechanism. To test these hypotheses, manipulative field and laboratory experiments were undertaken in which N. kraussianus and E. paupercula were added to treatments with and without C. kraussi, and their survival and gut chlorophyll-a content measured. The effects of C. kraussi on sediment erodability and on condition of E. paupercula (tissue mass/shell length) were determined in a second experiment. In the presence of C. kraussi, (1) microalgal consumption by both N. kraussianus and E. paupercula was halved; (2) condition and survival of E. paupercula were significantly reduced but survival of N. kraussianus was unaffected; and (3) sediment erodability was increased. A significant negative relationship was established between sediment erodability and condition of E. paupercula. Evidently C. kraussi exerts a strongly negative influence on the feeding of E. paupercula and N. kraussianus, and this may explain the scarcity of these organisms in areas containing high densities of C. kraussi. 相似文献

The impact of parasitism by Asobara tabida on Drosophila melanogaster larval development, survival features and larval activity has been investigated using two strains of the parasitoid. The successful parasitism rate of the A1 strain was four times greater than that of the WOPV strain. Both strains induced equivalent mortality rates but hosts parasitized by A1 predominantly died as pupae. The time necessary for the host pupariation and emergence, and the larval weight at 72, 96 and 120 h post-parasitization were measured. Parasitized larvae exhibited longer periods of development and lower weights than controls, especially when parasitized by A1. These results suggest that hosts underwent physiological costs varying with respect to the outcome of the parasitic relationship. Of the parasitoid factors possibly responsible for these costs, we examined venoms for their impact on host mortality. Artificial injections of WOPV venoms induced higher mortality rates than did A1 venoms. Venoms were also found responsible for the induction of a transient paralysis, naturally occuring after parasitization. Again, the strongest effect was observed after parasitization by WOPV or injections of its venoms. This study gives new insights into the intriguing features of A. tabida and constitutes the first report of the paralysing properties of the venoms. 相似文献

A modulation of the phagocytic activity of hemocytes from the common periwinkle Littorina littorea by secretory-excretory products (SEP) released by trematode rediae during axenic in vitro cultivation was studied. The SEP released by the parasites Himasthla elongata (Echinostomatidae) and Cryptocotyle lingua (Heterophyidae) were found to inhibit the phagocytosis of zymozan particles by periwinkle hemocytes. The specificity of SEP effects was assessed: SEP of Himasthla militaris and Cryptocotyle concavum, two trematodes belonging to the same genera but infecting another closely related prosobranch snail Hydrobia ulvae, were also shown to be able to suppress L. littorea hemocytes phagocytic activity. However, no decrease in phagocytosis rate was observed when SEP of H. elongata and C. lingua were applied to monolayers of hemocytes from the bivalve mollusc Mytilus edulis. SEP from H. elongata was fractionated; only those fractions containing proteins of molecular weight more than 50 kDa were shown to possess inhibitory activity. Different H. elongata SEP concentrations were tested in for their ability to suppress phagocytosis by L. littorea hemocytes. Even very low SEP concentrations were shown to retain their ability to decrease phagocytosis rate, the inhibitory effect being dose-dependent. Hemocytes derived from snails naturally infected with H. elongata were also found to have lower phagocytic ability as compared to healthy individuals. 相似文献

Function and regulation of Alx4 in limb development: complex genetic interactions with Gli3 and Shh 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The role of the aristaless-related homeobox gene Alx4 in antero-posterior (AP-) patterning of the developing vertebrate limb has remained somewhat elusive. Polydactyly of Alx4 mutant mice is known to be accompanied by ectopic anterior expression of genes like Shh, Fgf4 and 5'Hoxd. We reported previously that polydactyly in Alx4 mutant mice requires SHH signaling, but we now show that in early Alx4-/- limb buds the anterior ectopic expression of Fgf4 and Hoxd13, and therefore disruption of AP-patterning, occurs independently of SHH signaling. To better understand how Alx4 functions in the pathways that regulate AP-patterning, we also studied genomic regulatory sequences that are capable of directing expression of a reporter gene in a pattern corresponding to endogenous Alx4 expression in anterior limb bud mesenchyme. We observed, as expected for authentic Alx4 expression, expansion of reporter construct expression in a Shh-/- background. Total lack of reporter expression in a Gli3-/- background confirms the existence of Gli3-dependent and -independent Alx4 expression in the limb bud. Apparently, these two modules of Alx4 expression are linked to dissimilar functions. 相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are multifunctional components of the innate systems of both insect and mammalian hosts of the pathogenic trypanosomatids Leishmania and Trypanosoma species. Structurally diverse AMPs from a wide range of organisms have in vitro activity against these parasites acting mainly to disrupt surface-membranes. In some cases AMPs also localize intracellularly to affect calcium levels, mitochondrial function and induce autophagy, necrosis and apoptosis. In this review we discuss the work done in the area of AMP interactions with trypanosomatid protozoa, propose potential targets of AMP activity at the cellular level and discuss how AMPs might influence parasite growth and differentiation in their hosts to determine the outcome of natural infection. 相似文献

Population dynamics and the effects of intraspecific competition on limpet growth and maintenance of bare patches were investigated for the intertidal limpet Cellana ornata (Dillwyn) at a boulder-dominated site and on a rocky platform near Kaikoura (South Island), New Zealand. Distribution and abundance patterns of C. ornata were described in relation to other biota and tidal height. C. ornata occurred almost exclusively in patches devoid of macroalgae, particularly in the mid-tidal zone. Both adult and juvenile limpets were most abundant on the tops of boulders, where their numbers were positively correlated with barnacle cover, which averaged 77%. The size structure and growth patterns of C. ornata were different between populations. Mark-recapture studies showed that the slopes of annual growth increments regressed on initial sizes were similar at both sites but that the annual increments on the platform were about 6 mm greater than on boulders. Growth virtually ceased at 27 mm for limpets at the barnacle-dominated boulder site and at 40 mm at the platform site. Recruiting cohorts had 20% survival on boulders and 37% on the platform during their first year. The largest size classes at both sites had around 57% annual survival. To test the effects of varying limpet densities on the growth and mortality of limpets and the maintenance of bare patches, densities of C. ornata were experimentally increased at both sites. Beyond a density of 4 per 0.25 m2, sizes and survival of limpets were reduced at both sites, but the effect was more pronounced at the boulder site. Limpets at the boulder site were more effective at maintaining bare space than those on the reef platform. Enclosing limpets in plots with and without barnacles showed that C. ornata and a co-occurring species (Cellana denticulata (Martyn)) grazed more effectively and had greater growth in cleared plots. Overall, there was considerable variation in the demographics of C. ornata between populations driven by site-specific characteristics. 相似文献

Dinoflagellates include noxious microalgae responsible for the formation of toxic red tides and the poisoning of molluscs and crustaceans, resulting in important economic losses. As a consequence, the life cycle of these algae has been extensively studied, but the dormancy phase (cyst) in the sediment record is little known. In the intertidal zone, bioturbation, an important biological process resulting from the activities of benthic fauna, significantly influences the movement of particles in the sediments. Laboratory experiments have allowed comparing and quantifying the movements of fluorescent microspheres resulting from the activity of two polychaetes annelidae, Nereis virens and Nephtys caeca. The particles, which simulate 45 µm diameter dinoflagellate cysts, are deposited in flat aquaria at the surface or deep in the sediment. Photographs of the aquaria were taken at regular intervals, to observe, in a non-destructive manner, the movement of the particles and to calculate, using adapted software, the optical reworking coefficient (ORC) over time. A difference appears between the movements of the particles generated by both species of polychaetes. Nereis virens create “permanent” galleries that carry the microspheres deeply in the sediment during the digging, bioirrigation and feeding, and Nephtys caeca homogenize the particles in the first centimetres of sediment during its erratic movements. The study shows that the bioturbation generated by these organisms can modify the distribution of the 45 µm diameter dinoflagellate cysts in the sedimentary column, burying them or raising them back to the water-sediment interface. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to quantify the intensity of sediment mixing induced by the gallery-diffusor (functional bioturbation group) Hediste diversicolor as a function of density, using particles tracers (luminophores). In order to assess the impact of density on sediment reworking, a 1-D model was used to obtain sediment reworking coefficients such as Db (biodiffusion-like) and r (biotransport). Densities used in this experiment corresponded to population densities observed in the sampling area (Saint-Antoine Canal, Gulf of Fos, France): 144, 288, 577, 1153 indiv/m2. At first, results showed that neither luminophore maximum burying depth nor the more marked tracer accumulation areas were influenced by density. Thus density did not seem to have any influence on size of galleries or complexity of structure. Then, density-dependent relations with Db (biodiffusion-like mixing) and r (biotransport) were highlighted with an observed process intensity rate twice as high at highest worm density. On the other hand, Db and r per capita coefficients were negatively influenced by density. Db and r per capita at highest density were equal to ∼ 20% of individual Db and r obtained at the lowest density. Finally, this study showed the importance of density which appears to be a key parameter in the functioning of the sedimentary ecosystem. 相似文献
