One population from each of six plant species along both sides of the Juyong-guan Great Wall, together with one population from each of five species along both sides of a path on a mountain top near Juyong-guan, were selected to study the effect of the Great Wall as a barrier on genetic differentiation between two subpopulations using RAPD markers. Significant genetic differentiation was found between the subpopulations on both sides of the Great Wall. A wind-pollinated woody species, Ulmus pumila, showed less genetic differentiation than four insect-pollinated species: Prunus armeniaca, Ziziphus jujuba, Vitex negundo, and Heteropappus hispidus. Cleistogenes caespitosa, a wind-pollinated perennial herb, displayed more genetic differentiation between subpopulations than the insect-pollinated species because of its propagation strategy. Although AMOVA analysis showed that subpopulations divided by a mountain path had diverged genetically, the variance component between the subpopulations on both sides of the Great Wall was significantly larger than that between the subpopulations at the control site. Therefore, it is reasonable to deduce that the Juyong-guan Great Wall has served as a physical barrier to gene flow between subpopulations separated for more than 600 years.  相似文献

Little is known about men's role in the adoption of family planning. Recent studies suggest that men may be a barrier to women's use of family planning. However, it is not clear whether husbands represent a true or a perceived barrier. Using the 1992 Morocco Demographic and Health Survey data, this study examines (1) whether women and men report concordant fertility desires, discussions, and contraceptive use; (2) the accuracy of women's perceptions of their husbands' fertility desires; and (3) whether husbands are a barrier to women's family planning use. The results demonstrate that, controlling for women's own fertility desires, husbands' true fertility desires are associated with family planning use. Likewise, women who perceive their husbands to want fewer children than they want are more likely to use family planning. Future fertility and family planning programs need to include men to reduce their role as both perceived and true barriers to family planning use.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of deleterious mutations in a hybrid zone maintained by selection against hybrids. In such zones, linkage disequilibria among hybrid depression loci, resulting from a balance between migration and selection, are crucial in maintaining the barrier because they allow each locus, in addition to its own selection coefficient, to cumulate indirect selective effects from other loci. Deleterious alleles produce heterosis and increase by this means the effective migration rate in structured populations. In a hybrid zone, they therefore contribute to decrease linkage disequilibria as well as the barrier to gene flow imposed by hybrid depression. However, deleterious mutations have no effect: (i) when selection against hybrids is weak, because linkage disequilibria are small even without heterosis in this case, or (ii) when selection against hybrids is so strong that it overwhelms heterosis. On the other hand, with moderate selection against hybrids, the decrease in the strength of the barrier due to heterosis may reach detectable levels, although it requires relatively small population sizes and/or migration rates. The effect is expected to be small and only within small genomes where loci are tightly linked can it become strong. Nevertheless, neglecting mutational load may to some extent obscure the estimations of selective parameters based either on artificial F1 crosses or on cline characteristics.  相似文献

This study examined factors affecting juvenile recruitment in the tuatua Paphies donacinaon an exposed surf beach in Pegasus Bay, South Island New Zealand between October 1994 and April 1997. Tuatua recruitment followed female gonad maturation with a delay of approximately 2 months. Juveniles (1–10 mm shell length) occurred throughout the study except during June and July 1995 (winter). Average densities (m–2 ) were 28 in winter, 230 in spring, 174 in summer and 108 in autumn. There was high juvenile mortality and/or emigration and the maximum average density of (741m–2 ) was recorded in November 1996. Recruit densities were similar between years except during winter. Adult tuatua populations were dominated by modal shell lengths greater than 70 mm.There was no significant relationship between adult and juvenile recruit length. Recruit length decreased with recruit density suggesting density dependent competition for space or food resources. Juvenile density increased following increases in food availability (chlorophyll a concentration) but average length of juveniles did not correlate directly with any of the environmental variables. Recruit density decreased as the modal adult length increased and recruit length reduced when adult populations had a high condition index. Because larvae, juveniles and adult are mobile the beach population is characteristic of an open system with adults and juveniles from the resident population affecting post-settlement density- dependent processes.  相似文献

Using specific antisera, neuropeptide F (NPF)-related peptides have been identified immunocytochemically as widespread and abundant in the nervous systems of all invertebrate taxa examined so far. To date, four NPFs have been isolated and sequenced: from the cestode, Moniezia expansa and the turbellarian, Artioposthia triangulata, and from the molluscs, Helix aspersa and Aplysia californica; a related nonapeptide has been sequenced also from Loligo vulgaris. These peptides all display structural characteristics of the vertebrate NPY superfamily of peptides and appear, therefore, to represent invertebrate members of this superfamily. In this respect, invertebrate NPFs most likely represent the precursors of the vertebrate NPY superfamily. Homologies between the gene structure of human NPY and molluscan NPF (A. californica) support the view that the NPY/NPF gene is of ancient lineage. Although NPF (A. californica) has been found to inhibit the activity of the abdominal ganglia in Aplysia, its widespread expression in this mollusc would suggest multiple functions; the physiological role(s) of NPFs in other invertebrates awaits examination. The abundance and apparent ubiquitous nature of NPF-related peptides establishes them as evolutionarily-ancient molecules that likely serve important physiological functions in invertebrate neurobiology.  相似文献

The intracellular protease calpain, abundant in endothelial cells (EC), is assumed to be inactive under physiological conditions but may account for Ca2+ -linked pathophysiological events. However, nonstimulated EC contained autolyzed, activated calpain. Adding 12-48 microM calpain inhibitor I (CI) or 0.5-1 microM of the novel, membrane-permeable conjugate of calpastatin peptide-penetratin (CPP) caused rapid rounding and retraction of cultured EC (phase contrast, capacitance) and translocation of Syk, Rac, and Rho to the membrane, signifying activation upon inhibition of calpain. Isolated hearts (guinea pig) perfused with 12 microM CI or 0.5 muM CPP developed coronary leak. We conclude that calpain is constitutively active in EC and regulates vascular permeability by governing cell-cell attachment.  相似文献

1. Natural experiments, in the form of disturbance from spates, were used to study the resistance and resilience of interstitial communities. Investigations were conducted in a by-passed section of the Rhône River characterized by an artificial hydrology with frequent spates separated by regular minimum discharge of 30 m3 s–1. 2. Three areas of a bar were studied, upwellings at the head of the bar (stations 1 and 2), and downwelling at the tail of the bar (station 3). In the head of the bar the substratum was characterized by stable cobbles, while mobile gravels dominated in the tail of the bar. At each station, samples were derived from four depths (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 m below the surface of the substratum). Fifteen spates occurred during the study period whose peak discharge ranged from 50 to 1640 m3 s–1. Temporal variations of the fauna were studied by comparing the spate effect observed 1 day (resistance), 7 days (resilience) and 17 days after the spate. Within-class correspondence analysis was used to compare the temporal variability of the fauna within each class {station/depth}. 3. The fauna differed markedly between the three stations, and the relative density of stygobionts (i.e. hypogean fauna) decreased from 55% at station 1 to 4% at station 3. The spatio-temporal variability increased dramatically from station 1 to station 3. 4. The results suggest that the hyporheic zone acts as a patchy refugium: the stations were more or less active refugial zones, depending on hydrology (upwelling or downwelling), substratum stability and spate amplitude. 5. The downwelling station was the main refugium area for benthic taxa. Important migrations of benthic groups (e.g. Gammarus, Cladocera) or hyporheic taxa (e.g. Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida) were observed deep into the sediment (2 m). Vertical movements of stygobionts (Niphargus, Niphargopsis) were also observed at high amplitude spates. These movements were very important (great numbers of individuals migrated) at low and medium magnitude spates, but were unimportant at high discharge, when the threshold of sediment instability was exceeded. In this case the substratum became mobile and induced drift of benthic organisms. 6. Conversely, in the upwelling stable stations, accumulation was less important (lower number of species and lower densities) but more constant with increasing discharge, suggesting that substratum stability is also a key factor. 7. Generally recovery was rapid at all stations (within 7 days) but no relationships were found between resilience (rate of recovery) and the amplitude of spates.  相似文献

Many types of bioactive peptides that inhibit angiotensin I, angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) and Ang II type 1 receptor (AT1) in the cardiovascular system contribute to the prevention and treatment of hypertension. These inhibitory peptides are derived from many food proteins or artificial synthetic products. Further research examining the bioavailability of ACE inhibitory peptides will lead to the development of more effective ACE inhibitory peptides and foods. Our research also demonstrates that ACE inhibitory peptide LAP may lower blood pressure with no adverse effects.  相似文献

Geographical information system (GIS)‐based cluster analyses and comparative ecological approaches were applied to unravel the hitherto controversially discussed role of the Mekong River as a biogeographical barrier to the amphibian fauna in Indochina. Referring to the unique and independent history of the Lower Mekong, south of the Lao–Cambodian border, this approach focused on the amphibians of southern Indochina and adjacent parts of eastern Thailand. To date, 131 amphibian species have been recorded from this region. In concordance with previous studies, our GIS‐based analyses revealed that the amphibian fauna of the Cardamom Mountains, west of the Mekong, possessed no closer affinity to the herpetofauna of the Southern Annamites. In addition, a statistical comparison of ecological characters showed an occurrence of ecological differentiation among amphibians across the Lower Mekong. Our results suggest that the Lower Mekong serves as, or at least coincides with, a biogeographical barrier in southern Indochina. Grass frogs, Rana pipiens, will detour around a barrier to reach prey on the other side. However, if the distance between prey and barrier is short, frogs attempt to push through the barrier and reach the prey directly. The relationship between the probability of detouring and the distance between prey and barrier is the same whether the frog's starting position is 4 cm or 8 cm from the barrier. This suggests that frogs measure the absolute separation between the two objects. To discover whether the retinal elevation of the bottom of the barrier contributes to measuring this distance, the relationship between the frequency of detouring and barrier-prey distance was examined in several experiments in which the retinal position of the bottom of the barrier was manipulated. No evidence was obtained that the barrier's retinal elevation helps in gauging distance.On the other hand, retinal elevation influences strongly how far a frog lunges to reach its prey. It is suggested that different cues to distance are applied to the two classes of object because, under natural circumstances, it is difficult to judge where a barrier emerges from the ground. A barrier may be hard to detect below the horizon because of the low contrast between it and the ground, or because vegetation and ground litter mask where the barrier meets the ground. In contrast, the prey's movements make it easily detectable against a stationary background and the prey's short height means that partial occlusion will have little effect on its apparent vertical position in the visual field.  相似文献

Empirical impact evidence exists for few of New Zealand’s environmental weeds. Financial constraints prevent managers examining all impacts of all weeds. Therefore it is useful to seek generalisable rules which allow managers to predict impacts of new invasions. Invasive weeds may indirectly affect fungivorous invertebrates through mechanisms such as altered litter-fall, decomposition rates, and microclimate, all of which may alter fungal activity. I tested the hypothesis that fungivorous invertebrates would be consistently affected by three invasive weeds, and that this effect would be more pronounced than for other invertebrate functional groups. Using pitfall traps, I compared invertebrates beneath climbing asparagus, tradescantia and ginger with invertebrates of uninvaded lowland forest. Five out of six Coleoptera taxa which differed in abundance between invaded and uninvaded sites were fungivores; the remaining taxon was a saprophage. At least two taxa of fungivorous Coleoptera responded to each of the three weed species. Acari (mainly Oribatids, some of which are fungivores), Isopoda and Amphipoda (decomposers) were the only taxa to respond to the presence of all three weed species. These results provide some support for the hypothesis that fungivores are particularly responsive to ground-cover weed invasion, but suggest this could be extended to include decomposers as well. However, the direction of effect differed among weed species. Therefore, while changes in fungivore and decomposer abundance may be predicted as one of the more likely consequences of ground-cover weed invasion in New Zealand low-land forest, site- and taxa-specific effects make it difficult to predict the direction of effect.  相似文献

When newly hatched larvae of P. rapae were transferred to cowpea foliage, they readily accepted this non-host as food, whereas later instars that had fed on cabbage rejected cowpea. However, when cowpea leaf discs were treated with aqueous extracts of cabbage foliage, they were accepted by cabbage-reared larvae. Experiments were conducted to determine whether larvae reared on one host plant would be stimulated to feed by extracts of other hosts. Larvae reared on Brassica juncea, Cleome spinosa, Tropaeolum majus, Sinapis alba, Alliaria petiolata, Barbarea vulgaris and cabbage (Brassica oleracea) were offered extracts of each of the other host plants on cowpea discs in choice assays. Larvae were generally stimulated to feed by extracts of all the alternate hosts, but quantitative differences in consumption occurred. In most cases, levels of discrimination between treatment and control cowpea discs showed no significant preference for extracts of the previously experienced plant. Since the test plants (and their extracts) contain glucosinolates of widely different structures, a general addiction to glucosinolates was suggested. A single glucosinolate, sinigrin, was sufficient to elicit feeding by cabbage-reared larvae. The time required for individual neonates to become addicted to glucosinolates as they fed on cabbage, as measured by refusal of cowpea, varied from 6 to 30 hours. Bioassays of cowpea extracts failed to show any deterrent activity and, therefore, supported the conclusion that addiction to glucosinolates is responsible for the fixation of P. rapae larvae on their host plants.  相似文献

The northeast Indian passageway connecting the Indian subcontinent to East/Southeast Asia is thought to have been a major corridor for human migrations. Because it is also an important linguistic contact zone, it is predicted that northeast India has witnessed extensive population interactions, thus, leading to high genetic diversity within groups and heterogeneity among groups. To test this prediction, we analyzed 14 biallelic and five short tandem-repeat Y-chromosome markers and hypervariable region 1 mtDNA sequence variation in 192 northeast Indians. We find that both northeast Indian Y chromosomes and mtDNAs consistently show strikingly high homogeneity among groups and strong affinities to East Asian groups. We detect virtually no Y-chromosome and mtDNA admixture between northeast and other Indian groups. Northeast Indian groups are also characterized by a greatly reduced Y-chromosome diversity, which contrasts with extensive mtDNA diversity. This is best explained by a male founder effect during the colonization of northeast India that is estimated to have occurred within the past 4,000 years. Thus, contrary to the prediction, these results provide strong evidence for a genetic discontinuity between northeast Indian groups and other Indian groups. We, therefore, conclude that the northeast Indian passage way acted as a geographic barrier rather than as a corridor for human migrations between the Indian subcontinent and East/Southeast Asia, at least within the past millennia and possibly for several tens of thousand years, as suggested by the overall distinctiveness of the Indian and East Asian Y chromosome and mtDNA gene pools.  相似文献

To assess the extent to which the Nile River Valley has been a corridor for human migrations between Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa, we analyzed mtDNA variation in 224 individuals from various locations along the river. Sequences of the first hypervariable segment (HV1) of the mtDNA control region and a polymorphic HpaI site at position 3592 allowed us to designate each mtDNA as being of "northern" or "southern" affiliation. Proportions of northern and southern mtDNA differed significantly between Egypt, Nubia, and the southern Sudan. At slowly evolving sites within HV1, northern-mtDNA diversity was highest in Egypt and lowest in the southern Sudan, and southern-mtDNA diversity was highest in the southern Sudan and lowest in Egypt, indicating that migrations had occurred bidirectionally along the Nile River Valley. Egypt and Nubia have low and similar amounts of divergence for both mtDNA types, which is consistent with historical evidence for long-term interactions between Egypt and Nubia. Spatial autocorrelation analysis demonstrates a smooth gradient of decreasing genetic similarity of mtDNA types as geographic distance between sampling localities increases, strongly suggesting gene flow along the Nile, with no evident barriers. We conclude that these migrations probably occurred within the past few hundred to few thousand years and that the migration from north to south was either earlier or lesser in the extent of gene flow than the migration from south to north.  相似文献

Cerebral malaria is a major killer in the developing world, but we still know very little about the causes of this disease. How does Plasmodium falciparum cause such a devastating neurological disease while it is in the brain vasculature? Why do some patients die, whereas others survive? What processes contribute to disease in the brain, and can we reverse them? Here, the latest evidence from post-mortem, in vitro and animal studies is reviewed to highlight the role of blood-brain barrier breakdown in cerebral malaria. Blood-brain barrier integrity is disturbed during severe malaria, causing leakage of cerebral vessels. Understanding how this happens and how it contributes to the pathogenesis of coma may provide new opportunities for the treatment of cerebral malaria.  相似文献
