The co-digestion of residues from the pre-treatment process of waste vegetable oil (OW) and pig manure (PM) was performed under different OW/PM feed ratios (1:0, 1:1 and 1:3 v/v) and at organic loading rates ranging from 0.25 to 3.1 kg VS m?3 day?1 in lab-scale single-phase (SP) and two-phase (TP) systems. From the experiments, it was observed that digestion of OW alone was inhibitory for the anaerobic degradation. Mixing OW with PM neutralized the negative effects of lipids accumulation and high VS removal efficiencies were realized in both systems (63 and 71 % in SP system and 69 and 72 % in TP system, at 1:1 and 1:3 OW/PM mixtures, respectively). Under the same operational conditions, the methane yield was 0.30 and 0.22 m3 CH4 kg?1 VS removed for the SP anaerobic digester and 0.30 and 0.27 m3 CH4 kg?1 VS removed for the TP configuration. Additionally, TP digestion presented more stable operation and higher treatment capacity.  相似文献

Studies on the performance of a laboratory scale upflow anaerobic solids removal (UASR) digester were carried out using sand-laden cow manure slurries having total solids (TS) concentration as 50 and 100 g/l. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) was maintained as 32.4 days, which resulted in the volatile solids (VS) loading rates of 1 and 1.64 g/l d. The UASR system was designed to remove sand from the manure slurry, while anaerobically digesting biodegradable solids inside a single reactor. To enhance the contact of microorganisms and substrate, the liquor from the top of the digester was recirculated through the bed of settled solids at its bottom. Volatile solids reduction through this process was observed to be 62% and 68% in the case of feed slurries having TS concentration as 50 and 100 g/l (referred in the text as 5% and 10% feed slurries), respectively. The methane production rates were observed to be 0.22 and 0.38 l/l d, while methane yield was 0.21 and 0.27 l CH4/g VS loaded, for 5% and 10% feed slurries, respectively. This indicates that the increase in the VS loading had a positive impact on methane production rate and methane yield. It would be of interest to study the performance of a UASR digester at higher solids loadings and with longer solids retention times. Nonetheless, the presented study showed that sand-laden manure slurries can be successfully digested in a UASR digester producing methane energy equivalent to 4 kW h per m3 of digester volume per day.  相似文献

Many beer breweries use high-rate anaerobic digestion (AD) systems to treat their soluble high-strength wastewater. Biogas from these AD systems is used to offset nonrenewable energy utilization in the brewery. With increasing nonrenewable energy costs, interest has mounted to also digest secondary residuals from the high-rate digester effluent, which consists of yeast cells, bacteria, methanogens, and small (hemi)cellulosic particles. Mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) lab-scale, low-rate continuously-stirred anaerobic digestion (CSAD) bioreactors were operated for 258 days by feeding secondary residuals at a volatile solids (VS) concentration of ∼40 g l−1. At a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 15 days and a VS loading rate of 2.7 g VS l−1 day−1, the mesophilic bioreactor showed an average specific volumetric biogas production rate of 0.88 l CH4 l−1 day−1 and an effluent VS concentration of 22.2 g VS l−1 (43.0% VS removal efficiency) while the thermophilic bioreactor displayed similar performances. The overall methane yield for both systems was 0.21 l CH4 g−1 VS fed and 0.47–0.48 l CH4 g−1 VS removed. A primary limitation of thermophilic digestion of this protein-rich waste is the inhibition of methanogens due to higher nondissociated (free) ammonia (NH3) concentrations under similar total ammonium (NH4 +) concentrations at equilibrium. Since thermophilic AD did not result in advantageous methane production rates or yields, mesophilic AD was, therefore, superior in treating secondary residuals from high-rate AD effluent. An additional digester to convert secondary residuals to methane may increase the total biogas generation at the brewery by 8% compared to just conventional high-rate digestion of brewery wastewater alone. A multi stage high rate biomethanation process with novel self mixed anaerobic digester (SMAD) was developed in the present study to reduce the hydraulic residence time (HRT), increase the volatile solids (VS) loading rate, improve the VS destruction efficiency and enhance the methane yield. Specific design features of SMAD were useful in mixing the digester contents without consuming power and de-alienated the problem of scum formation. In the first phase, poultry litter having 10% total solids (TS) was subjected to high rate biomethanation in multi stage configuration (SMAD-I and II in series with UASB reactor). It was observed that gross VS reduction of 58%, gross methane yield of 0.16 m3 kg−1 (VS reduced) and VS loading rate of 3.5 kg VS m−3 day−1 at HRT of 13 days was obtained. In the second phase SMAD-II was bypassed from the process scheme keeping the other parameters same as in the first phase. The results obtained were not as encouraging as in the first phase. The study showed that multi stage configuration with SMAD design improved the anaerobic digestion process efficiency of poultry litter.  相似文献

Cow manure with bedding is renewable organic biomass available around the year on dairy farms. Developing efficient and cost-effective psychrophilic dry anaerobic digestion (PDAD) processes could contribute to solving farm-related environmental, energy, and manure management problems in cold-climate regions. This study was to increase the organic loading rate (OLR), fed to a novel psychrophilic (20 °C) dry anaerobic digestion of 27 % total solid dairy manure (cow feces and wheat straw) in sequence batch reactor (PDAD-SBR), by 133 to 160 %. The PDAD-SBR process operated at treatment cycle length of 21 days and OLR of 7.0 and 8.0 g total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)?kg?1 inoculum day?1 (5.2?±?0.1 and 5.8?±?0.0 g volatile solids (VS)?kg?1 inoculum day?1) for four successive cycles (84 days) produced average specific methane yields (SMYs) of 147.1?±?17.2 and 143.2?±?11.7 normalized liters (NL)?CH4?kg?1 VS fed, respectively. PDAD of cow feces and wheat straw is possible with VS-based inoculum-to-substrate ratio of 1.45 at OLR of 8.0 g TCOD kg?1 inoculum day?1. Hydrolysis was the limiting step reaction. The VS removal averaged around 57.4?±?0.5 and 60.5?±?5.7 % at OLR 7.0 and 8.0 g TCOD kg?1 inoculum day?1, respectively.  相似文献

Pistia stratiotes, an aquatic weed, was investigated as a substrate for biogas production. Experiments were carried out as batch runs in laboratory-scale digesters with the addition of inoculum (digested cattle manure). Gas yields were in the range of 533–707 litres kg−1 VS (STP), respectively, 21–28 litres kg−1 fresh weight of P. stratiotes, with 30 days digestion time at temperatures of 29·5, 33·0 and 37·5°C. The average methane content was 58–68%. Due to its high biodegradability (approximately 83–99% of VS) Pistia stratiotes is very suitable as a substrate for biogas production.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in the growth chamber to quantify the biomass production, N removal and N2 fixation from a synthetic medium by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Anabaena flos-aquae. Nitrogen was supplied at a concentration of 100 mg liter−1 of NO315N and NH4+15 (3·5 atom %), respectively. After 21 days Chlamydomonas reinhardtii removed an average of 83·8 and 78·7 mg N liter−1 as NO3 and NH4+, respectively. Averages of 0·89 and 0·71 g liter−1 (first batch), 1·63 and 0·95 g liter (second batch) algal biomass were collected from NO3 and NH4+ media, respectively. Uptake rates of 0·11 mg 15N g−1 algae day−1 from NO3 medium and 0·10 mg 15N g−1 algae day−1 from NH4+ medium were calculated. Algal cells grown in NO3 and NH4+ medium contained 71 and 65 g N kg−1 (first batch), 39 and 58 g N kg−1 (second batch), respectively. Anabaena flos-aquae produced averages of 0·58 and 0·46 g liter−1 (first batch), 0·55 and 0·48 g liter−1 (second batch) after 14 days of growth from NO3 and NH4+ media, respectively. Blue-green algal biomass contained higher N (81–98 g kg−1) than green algae. Isotope dilution method for determining N2 fixation indicated that 55% and 77% of total N of blue-green algae grown in NO3 and NH4+ media, respectively, was derived from the atmosphere.  相似文献

A central composite design circumscribed method was used to define the experimental conditions that improve the methane production rate (kCH4, liters of methane per kilogram of VS of waste added and per day) and the cumulative methane production (cMP, liters of methane per kilogram of VS of waste added) of the co-digestion of sewage sludge (SS) with crude glycerol (cGly) and waste frying oil (WFO). Three factors were selected, i.e., SS concentration, global co-substrate concentration, and mass fraction of cGly (xcGly) in a mixture of cGly and WFO (in chemical oxygen demand, COD). SS digestion without co-substrate reached a cMP of (294?±?6) L·kg?1 and a kCH4 of (64?±?1) L·kg?1·d?1, at standard temperature and pressure conditions and expressed relatively to the initial volatile solids. After statistical analysis, SS and co-substrate concentrations of 4.6 g·L?1 and 8.8 g·L?1 (in COD), respectively, with xcGly of 0.8, were defined to simultaneously boost cMP (91 % more) and kCH4 (3-fold increase). Application of these conditions would yield 214 MWh more in electricity per 1000 m3 of SS digested.  相似文献

Summary The influence of trace elements (Co2+, Ni2+ and Fe3+) in varying concentrations and combination, was studied in 1.5 m3 Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) digesters for biogas generation from mangopeel. Addition of these trace metals enhanced the biogas yield and methane content moderately, the maximum being with the iron fed digester. The digesters were always found to be stable without much variation in total volatile fatty acids (VFA), pH, total alkalinity and other parameters. A methane content of 62% and biogas yield of 0.49 m3/kg VS added was obtained with 4000 mg/L FeCl3 supplemented mangopeel fed digester as compared to control having biogas yield of 0.22 m3/kg VS added with a methane content of about 48–50%.  相似文献

An anaerobic digester receiving food waste collected mainly from domestic kitchens was monitored over a period of 426 days. During this time information was gathered on the waste input material, the biogas production, and the digestate characteristics. A mass balance accounted for over 90% of the material entering the plant leaving as gaseous or digestate products. A comprehensive energy balance for the same period showed that for each tonne of input material the potential recoverable energy was 405 kWh. Biogas production in the digester was stable at 642 m3 tonne−1 VS added with a methane content of around 62%. The nitrogen in the food waste input was on average 8.9 kg tonne−1. This led to a high ammonia concentration in the digester which may have been responsible for the accumulation of volatile fatty acids that was also observed.  相似文献

Nitrogen from poultry manure (PM) and ammoniacal fertilizers undergoes rapid nitrification upon addition to soils, making it highly susceptible to leaching and thus creating a potential for groundwater contamination by nitrate-N. Any management technique that could delay nitrification would be desirable. A laboratory incubation study was conducted to determine the effect of thiosulfate, a known nitrification inhibitor, on nitrification in a loamy sand soil amended with five N sources, including two poultry manures and three N fertilizers [(NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, CO(NH2)2]. The manures or fertilizers were added to a soil-sand mixture alone or in combination with Na2S2O at a rate of 100 mg N kg-1 for the inorganic N sources and 147 mg N kg-1 and 122 mg N kg-1 for PM-1 and PM-2 respectively. All treatments were incubated for 12 weeks and analyzed periodically for NO3-N and NH4-N.Thiosulfate was most effective with NH4NO3, maintaining 100% inhibition of nitrification throughout the 12 week study, and with (NH4)2SO4 (89% inhibition at 12 weeks). Thiosulfate also inhibited nitrification from urea and poultry manure, but the inhibitory effect diminished later in the incubation. Urea had 81% inhibition of nitrification after eight weeks, decreasing to 26% by week 12, while the manures averaged 89% inhibition after four weeks and 20% at week 12. Net mineralization of organic N from PM was also reduced by the use of thiosulfate, particularly for PM-1 where the percentage of organic N mineralized decreased from 42% after four weeks incubation to 3% at week 12. Therefore, while thiosulfate can reduce nitrification from manures, and thus the potential for nitrate leaching, the timing of manure application will influence the effect of thiosulfate on the availability of manure N for plant uptake or leaching.  相似文献

In this study, dual-cylindrical anaerobic digesters were designed and built on the pilot plant scale for the improvement of anaerobic digestion efficiency. The removal efficiency of organics, biogas productivity, yield, and microbial communities was evaluated as performance parameters of the digester. During the stable operational period in the continuous mode, the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand and total solids were 74.1 and 65.1%, respectively. Biogas productivities of 63.9 m3/m3-FWW and 1.3 m3/kg-VSremoved were measured. The hydrogenotrophic methanogen orders, Methanomicrobiales and Methanobacteriales, were predominant over the aceticlastic methanogen order, Methanosarcinaceae, probably due to the tolerance of the hydrogenotrophs to environmental perturbation in the field and their faster growth rate compared with that of the aceticlastics.  相似文献

Different mixtures were digested in a single-stage, batch, mixed, laboratory scale mesophilic anaerobic digester at the Biomass Research Centre Laboratory (University of Perugia). The yield and the composition of biogas from the different substrates were evaluated and the cumulative curves were estimated. Two experimental campaigns were carried out, the first on three mixtures (chicken, pig and bovine manures), the second on animal and vegetal biomasses (chicken and cow manure, olive husk) with different inocula (rumen fluid and digested sludge). In the first campaign pig manure mixture showed the maximum biogas production (0.35 Nm3/kg) and energy content (1.35 kWh/kg VS); in the second one the differences in produced biogas from the different inocula were analyzed: olive husk with piggery manure anaerobically digested as inoculum showed the higher biogas (0.28 Nm3/kg VS) and methane yield (0.11 Nm3/kg VS), corresponding to an energetic content of 1.07 kWh/kg VS. All data obtained from the laboratory scale anaerobic digester are comparable to the values in literature for several biomass and in particular for olive husk, dairy manure and chicken manure.  相似文献

Studies of uptake of ionic sources of N by two hydroponically grown rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars (paddy‐field‐adapted Koshihikari and dryland‐adapted Kanto 168) showed that the magnitude of the nitrogen isotope fractionation (?) for uptake of NH4+ depended on the concentrations of NH4+ and cultivar (averaging –6·1‰ for Koshihikari and –12·0‰ for Kanto 168 at concentrations from 40 to 200 mmol m?3 and, respectively, –13·4 and –28·9‰ for the two cultivars at concentrations from 0·5 to 4 mol m?3). In contrast, the ? for uptake of NO3? in similar experiments was almost insensitive to the N concentration, falling within a much narrower range (+3·2‰ to –0·9‰ for Koshihikari and –0·9‰ to –5·1‰ for Kanto 168 over NO3? concentrations from 0·04 to 2 mol m?3). From longer term experiments in which Norin 8 and its nitrate‐reductase deficient mutant M819 were grown with 2 or 8 mol m?3 NO3? for 30 d, it was concluded that the small concentration‐independent isotopic fractionation during absorption of this ion was not related to nitrate reductase activity.  相似文献

Three configurations for a dual digestion system were examined. The units were based on three 5 l completely stirred tank reactors (CSTR). A first-stage thermophilic digester was used to provide the feed to each of the two second-stage mesophilic (35°C) digesters. Using a mixture of sewage sludge and strong confectionery waste, the thermophilic digester was operated at 55°C with a hydraulic retention time of 4 h. The mesophilic digesters were operated at hydraulic retention times of 8, 12 and 15 days. In terms of the reduction of volatile solids (VS), the three dual digestion configurations were similar but were more effective than the single-stage reactor which was used as a control. However, based on the specific methane yield (m3 CH4/kg VS removed), the configuration with a first stage operating at 55°C and a secondary digester at 35°C with a hydraulic retention time of 12 days was the most effective. This configuration also maintained a more stable pH, irrespective of the quality of the feed sludge.  相似文献

Biogas production has been shown to be inhibited by branched chain fatty acids (isobutyric, isovaleric) produced in the digester by cellulolytic organisms. Performance of these mixed cellulolytic cultures isolated at 25°C (C25) and at 35° (C35) in a batch digester using cattle manure confirmed that C35, which forms mainly straight chain fatty acids from cellulose was more suitable for use as an inoculum than C25 which formed predominantly branched chain fatty acids. Reconstitution of cellulolytic culture C35 and mixed methanogens M35 almost doubled both the amount and rate of methane production. Cellulolytic culture was useful in pretreatment of water hyacinth prior to its use as a substrate for methane generation A method for preservation and transportation of mixed cellulolytic culture for use as an inoculum in the digester is described.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of tomato, cucumber, common reed and grass silage was studied in four separate two-stage reactor configuration consisting of leach bed reactor (LBR) and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB). LBR studies showed that COD solubilization for cucumber and grass silage was higher (50%) than tomato (35%) and common reed (15%). Results also showed that 31-39% of initial TKN present in tomato and cucumber was solubilized in the leachates and 47-54% of the solubilized TKN was converted to NH4-N. The corresponding values for common reed and grass silage were 38-50% and 18-36%, respectively. Biomethanation of the leachates in UASB reactors resulted in methane yields of 0.03-0.14 m3 CH4 kg−1VSfed for the studied crop materials. Thus, high COD solubilization, high nitrogen mineralization and solubilization rates were feasible during anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic materials in a two-stage LBR-UASB reactor system.  相似文献

In many forests of Europe and north-eastern North America elevated N deposition has opened the forest N cycle, resulting in NO3 ? leaching. On the other hand, despite this elevated N deposition, the dominant fate of NO3 ? and NH4 + in some of these forests is biotic or abiotic immobilization in the soil organic matter pool, preventing N losses. The environmental properties controlling mineral N immobilization and the variation and extent of mineral N immobilization in forest soils are not yet fully understood. In this study we investigated a temperate mixed deciduous forest, which is subjected to an average N deposition of 36.5 kg N ha?1 yr?1, but at the same time shows low NO3 ? concentrations in the groundwater. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the turnover rate of the mineral N pool could explain these low N leaching losses. A laboratory 15N pool dilution experiment was conducted to study gross and net N mineralization and nitrification and mineral N immobilization in the organic and uppermost (0–10 cm) mineral layer of the forest soil. Two locations, one at the forest edge (GE) and another one 145 m inside the forest (GF1), were selected. In the organic layers of GE and GF1, the gross N mineralization averaged 10.9 and 11.1 mg N kg?1 d?1, the net N mineralization averaged 6.1 and 6.8 mg N kg?1 d?1 and NH4 + immobilization rates averaged 3.8 and 3.6 mg N kg?1 d?1. In the organic layer of GE and GF1, the average gross nitrification was 3.8 and 4.6 mg N kg?1 d?1, the average net nitrification was ?25.2 and ?31.3 mg N kg?1 d?1 and the NO3 ? immobilization rates averaged 29.0 and 35.9 mg N kg?1 d?1. For the mineral (0–10 cm) layer the same trend could be observed, but the N transformation rates were much lower for the NH4 + pool and not significantly different from zero for the NO3 ? pool. Except for the turnover of the NH4 + pool in the mineral layer, no significant differences were observed between location GE and GF1. The ratio of NH4 + immobilization to gross N mineralization, gross N mineralization to gross nitrification, and NO3 ? immobilisation to gross nitrification led to the following observations. The NH4 + pool of the forest soil was controlled by N mineralization and NO3 ? immobilization was importantly controlling the forest NO3 ? pool. Therefore it was concluded that this process is most probably responsible for the limited NO3 ? leaching from the forest ecosystem, despite the chronically high N deposition rates.  相似文献

In this study, combination of a partial nitritation reactor, using immobilized polyethylene glycol (PEG) gel carriers, and a continuous stirred granular anammox reactor was investigated for nitrogen removal from livestock manure digester liquor. Successful nitrite accumulation in the partial nitritation reactor was observed as the nitrite production rate reached 2.1 kg-N/m3/day under aerobic nitrogen loading rate of 3.8 kg-N/m3/day. Simultaneously, relatively high free ammonia concentrations (average 50 mg-NH3/l) depressed the activity of nitrite oxidizing bacteria with nitrate concentration never exceeding 3% of TN concentration in the effluent of the partial nitritation reactor (maximum 35.2 mg/l). High nitrogen removal rates were achieved in the granular anammox reactor with the highest removal rate being 3.12 kg-N/m3/day under anaerobic nitrogen loading rate of 4.1 kg-N/m3/day. Recalcitrant organic compounds in the digester liquor did not impair anammox reaction and the SS accumulation in the granular anammox reactor was minimal. The results of this study demonstrated that partial nitritation–anammox combination has the potential to successfully remove nitrogen from livestock manure digester liquor.  相似文献
