An experiment was conducted at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India during 1982 wet season (June–July) to study the root activity and rooting pattern of IR-20 rice as influenced by urea insecticide combinations by a32P absorption technique. The treatments involved a factorial combination of four levels of N (0, 60, 90 and 120 kg N/ha) as urea and three levels of insecticides (no insecticide, carbofuran @ 0.75 kg a.i./ha and phorate @ 1.0 kg a.i./ha). The root activity measured in terms of the amount of32P absorbed by the plant, increased considerably by the application of urea and insecticides (carbofuran or phorate) as well as due to their interactions. The root activity increased upto 120 kg N ha−1. Carbofuran or phorate application increased root activity and the effect of carbofuran was greater than that of phorate. Nitrogen-insecticide interaction was positive on root activity upto 120 kg N ha−1 and the effect was more marked with carbofuran and N combinations. But the percentage distribution of active roots of rice could not be influenced by levels of N, insecticides or their interactions. About 80 percent of the roots of IR 20 rice forage within 10 cm from the surface. The enhanced root activity due to application of N and insecticides (carbofuran and phorate) increased the uptake of major and micro-nutrients. the phytotonic effects of carbofuran and phorate on rice works by triggering the root activity of the crop.  相似文献

Factorial experiments in 1976–1979 investigated the effects of sowing date, fungicides (ethirimol seed treatments and tridemorph sprays) and insecticides (phorate applied to the soil, and menazon or dimethoate sprays) on powdery mildew, aphids, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and grain yield of spring barley (cv. Julia in 1976 and 1977; cv. Wing in 1978 and 1979). Late sowing usually increased the severity of powdery mildew, numbers of aphids and incidence of BYDV and generally decreased yield. Responses to pesticides were commonly greater on the late-sown than on the early-sown barley. Response to fungicides are principally attributed to the control of powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei; the target species) but responses to insecticides cannot be attributed to virus control and seem unlikely to be due solely to control of aphids, whose numbers were relatively small. There were some effects of fungicides on aphids and insecticides on mildew, but they were inconsistent and too small to affect crop protection strategies.  相似文献

Fentinhydroxide and benomyl sprayed on to sugar-beet root crops in July, August and September frequently increased yield of tops. Sugar yield was increased only if either powdery mildew or virus yellows was prevalent, when on average a single fentinhydroxide spray at 0·7 kg a.i./ha increased sugar yield by 8% and yield of tops by 13%. The mildew specific fungicide fluotrimazole also increased yield, but it could not be determined whether this was due to controlling powdery mildew or secondary parasitic fungi attacking yellows-infected plants. Repeated sprays of both fentinhydroxide and fluotrimazole, but not benomyl, appeared to be phytotoxic when applied in hot dry weather.  相似文献

Effects of combinations of insecticides and herbicides on the growth and yield of cauliflower plants (cvs No. 110, Garant and Strong) were determined in two field experiments with seed drilled to give a stand of c. 300000 plants/ha. Granular formulations of chlorfenvinphos or fonofos were applied by the bow-wave method at 2 kg a.i./ha to control cabbage root fly (Delia brassicae). Weeds were successfully controlled with combinations of trifluralin, incorporated into the soil at 0·6 or 1·2 kg a.i./ha before drilling, and propachlor, applied pre-emergence at 2·2 or 4·4 kg a.i./ha. Fonofos, with and without herbicides, significantly lessened (P < 0·01) numbers of seedlings that would survive to harvest. Herbicides and chlorfenvinphos generally did not significantly affect the emergence of healthy seedlings of any cultivar. Combinations of herbicides and chlorfenvinphos were compatible for control of target species. Chlorfenvinphos reduced root damage by at least 50% but did not significantly increase (P > 0·05) the total or marketable weight of curds. Numbers of curds were not usually affected and consistent effects of treatments on maturation periods of the three cultivars were not detected.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in eastern Scotland in 1976-78 to test the ability of granular insecticides, applied to soil at planting, and of insecticide sprays applied to the foliage, to control aphids and spread of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) in potatoes. The three years provided contrasting opportunities for virus spread. In 1976, the main vector of PLRV, Myzus persicae, arrived in early June and multiplied rapidly in untreated plots, and PLRV spread extensively. In 1977, M. persicae arrived 4–6 wk later than in 1976 and most spread of PLRV, which was less than in 1976, occurred after the end of July. In 1978, few M. persicae were recorded but the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, arrived early and very large populations developed in untreated plots. However, little spread of PLRV occurred in 1978, supporting other evidence that M. euphorbiae is an inefficient vector of PLRV in field conditions. In each year, granular insecticides decreased PLRV spread to a quarter or less of that in control plots. Thiofanox gave somewhat better and longer-lasting control of aphid populations than disulfoton, especially of M. persicae, but did not give greater control of PLRV spread. Application of three (1976) or five (1977) sprays of demeton-S-methyl to plots treated with granular insecticides further improved the control of M. euphorbiae but had less or no effect on M. persicae, especially where organophosphorus resistant aphids (R1 strain) were found. These supplementary sprays of insecticide did not further improve the control of PLRV but, in 1978, four sprays of demephion or pirimicarb to plots not treated with granular insecticide decreased PLRV spread. These data, together with previous findings, indicate that the amount of virus spread depends on the date of arrival and rate of multiplication of M. persicae in relation to the timing and effectiveness of removal of PLRV sources in crops. It is concluded that in Scotland insecticide granules should be used routinely only in crops of the highest grade of seed potato. Their use for other grades need be considered only in years following mild winters, when aphids can be expected to enter crops earlier and in larger numbers.  相似文献

To study the effects of plant density on populations of the cabbage root fly (Erioischia brassicae), cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprout and swede were each planted in plots with twenty-four concentric circles of plants at spacings ranging from 10 to 90 cm between the individual plants. Plants treated with a root drench of chlorfenvinphos and untreated plants were each sampled at ten plant densities which ranged from 1–5 to 68-3 plants/m2. In the absence of insecticide, the numbers of overwintering cabbage root fly pupae produced ranged from c. four per m2 at the lowest plant density to 200 per m2 at the highest. The number of pupae per m2 was proportional to plant density to the powers 0–98,0-77,0–69 and o-6i for the swede, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprout crops, respectively. The magnitude of each cabbage root fly population was determined mainly by plant density but also by the cultivar used as host plant. The results suggested that, in a given locality, when changing from low to high plant density crops during a growing season it should be unnecessary to apply insecticide to control cabbage root fly; conversely, a change from high to low plant densities would necessitate an extremely efficient application of insecticide.  相似文献

Mildew decreased grain yield by decreasing ear number and grain size (but not grain number/ear), the damage depending on the earliness and severity of mildew. In 1971 when mildew was early and severe, ethirimol seed dressings at 0.22 kg a.i./ha, which gave only early protection, increased yield more than did ethirimol sprays applied to protect the flag leaf and ear. In 1972 sprays were better than seed dressings at this rate because mildew was less severe during the seedling stages.  相似文献

Foam-rubber, carpet-underlay discs placed in position around the base of the stem directly after transplanting were as effective as certain recommended insecticides in protecting brassica plants from damage by cabbage root fly (Delia radicum). The three factors that contributed to the overall effectiveness of the discs were that only half as many eggs were laid around plants protected with discs as around unprotected plants, that predatory ground beetles preferred to aggregate in the humid microhabitat beneath the discs and consequently ate proportionally more fly eggs/larvae and that the discs acted as a mulch, conserving water around the roots of the plants, and thereby permitting them to tolerate greater amounts of damage. Application of the repellent benzyl benzoate to the discs improved effectiveness but 12 other insect repellents and two sticky compounds gave no improvement and most were phytotoxic. Root drenches of the insecticide chlorfenvinphos were repellent, reducing oviposition by approximately 25%. The costs of protecting brassica transplants with either discs or insecticide were similar and discs thus appear to be a reasonable method of cabbage root fly control for small-scale use.  相似文献

A series of trials from 1981–85 investigating the amount of damage caused by larvae of the turnip root flyDelia floralis (Fallen) to cultivars of Swedish turnipBrassica Napus (L.) of varying percentages of dry matter indicated that those of high dry matter were damaged less than low dry matter cultivars. Surveys in 1974–75 in which 20 plants were examined in each of 105 fields showed that cabbage stem weevil was widespread on spring oilseed rape in the south of England, the larvae sometimes infesting a large percentage of plants and reducing vigour and yield. In replicated field trials during 1974–77, infestations were reduced by seed treatments of gamma-HCH or sprays of gamma-HCH, azinphos-methyl, azinphos-methyl + demeton-S-methyl sulphone, chlorpyrifos or triazophos. In some experiments treatments significantly improved plant growth or yield, or both. Granules of carbofuran or phorate also reduced larval infestations and damage, but both thiofanox granules and dimethoate sprays were ineffective. Sprays of gamma-HCH or azinphos-methyl + demeton-S-methyl sulphone which were effective against stem weevil could also in some years give improved control of blossom beetles (Meligethes spp.)  相似文献

From 1978 - 1985, 14 trials were conducted, mainly in Northern England, to assess the efficacy of different insecticides, formulations and application times for the control of frit fly (Oscinella frit) on winter cereals (13 on winter wheat and one on winter barley). Treatments were compared by assessing shoot damage in December-January, numbers of healthy tillers in April and harvested yield. A chlorpyrifos spray to the grass before ploughing or at crop emergence gave the most consistently good results, significantly reducing damage and increasing yield by 0·61 and 0·31 t/ha respectively when taken over all trials. Sprays or granules of other insecticides applied from before drilling to 8 wk after emergence gave variable but sometimes good control and enhanced yield. Chlorpyrifos applied from crop emergence to 8 wk after emergence was generally more effective than other insecticides. Cypermethrin at emergence or 2wk later gave promising results in the two trials where it was used. Of the seed treatments fonofos was the most effective though it did not match the spray treatments. In additional trials, where insecticides were applied after damage occurred, sprays of chlorpyrifos and pirimphos-methyl reduced damage and increased yield.  相似文献

Benomyl, pyrazophos (HOE 2873), triarimol, triforine and the non-systemic fungicide diethyl phthalimidophosphonothionate (Dowco 199) were sprayed at c. 200 gal/acre (2250 1/ha) at 14-day intervals from pink bud (late April/early May) on seven apple cultivars including Cox's Orange Pippin, Golden Delicious and Jonathan. Compared with binapacryl or dino-cap (and with elemental sulphur on the sulphur-tolerant cv. Golden Delicious), these compounds were more phytotoxic without substantially or consistently improving the control of Podosphaera leucotricha; fruit russet was increased and the crop and fruit size of some cultivars were reduced in some trials. In 1969 the inclusion of bis(dimethylthiocarbamoylthio)-methylarsine (44 ppm) as Urbacid(R) in the sprays reduced russeting by benomyl and Dowco 199 so that these fungicides became as safe as captan on several cultivars; Dowco 199 was also safened by captan (500 ppm). Urbacid(R) (88 ppm a.i.) safened benomyl and triarimol on fewer cultivars in 1970 when russet was less severe. The addition of Urbacid(R) did not prevent yield losses caused by sprays in either year. The crop is most sensitive to spray damage from pink bud until late June. This is a crucial period for the control of mildew, and unless new fungicides are less phytotoxic, palliatives may become necessary adjuvants.  相似文献

Carrot, cauliflower and radish seedlings raised in sand culture and treated with aqueous suspensions containing chlorfenvinphos, diazinon, iodofenphos or triazophos were planted into the field in 1982 and 1983 to compare the performance against cabbage root fly and carrot fly of these treatments with that of bow-wave applications of granular formulations at sowing. Initial residue concentrations were up to 4100 mg kg-1 in the seedlings at planting. Thereafter the amounts of insecticides per root system declined. Residue concentrations in mature carrot and radish roots were smaller when plants had been treated as seedlings rather than by bow-wave application. Chlorfenvinphos was the most effective insecticide against both pests. Amounts of insecticide applied in transplanted seedlings were < 5% of the amounts applied by the bow-wave method but short-term control of cabbage root fly on radish was similar. Carrot fly damage was reduced by 60% by some of the seedling treatments after 16 wk in 1982 but in 1983 they were less effective. Pot experiments with chlorfenvinphos showed that most of the insecticide in the seedlings was transferred rapidly into the surrounding soil and it was concluded that the bioactivity resulted mainly from uniform distribution of the released insecticide between and around individual plants.  相似文献

Reliable options to control the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L., are lacking in many countries as restrictions on insecticide use have tightened due to environmental concerns. Although microbial control agents are often considered as a sustainable alternative, their application in agriculture is constrained by inconsistent efficacy owing to low field persistence. To stimulate naturally occurring beneficial microbes, soil amendment with the residual streams of insect production has been suggested as an alternative to synthetic fertilization and a new approach to microbial crop protection. In a set of greenhouse experiments, exuviae and frass of black soldier fly larvae, Hermetia illucens L., house crickets, Acheta domesticus L. and exuviae of mealworms, Tenebrio molitor L., were added to soil from an organically managed field. Exuviae and frass treatments were compared to treatments with synthetic fertilizer. Brussels sprouts, Brassica oleracea L., plants were grown in amended soil for 5 weeks before being infested with cabbage root fly larvae. Insect and plant performance were assessed by recording cabbage root fly survival, biomass and eclosion time and seed germination and plant biomass, respectively. Whereas soil amendment with black soldier fly frass or exuviae reduced cabbage root fly survival and biomass, respectively, amendment with house cricket or mealworm residual streams did not negatively affect root fly performance. Furthermore, seed germination was reduced in soil amended with house cricket exuviae, while amendment with either residual stream derived from black soldier fly larvae or house crickets resulted in lower plant shoot biomass compared with the synthetic fertilizer treatment. Amending soil with black soldier fly residual streams could become a novel and low-cost tool to be integrated in cabbage root fly management programmes, especially where methods currently available are insufficient. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying the effects of insect-derived soil amendments described here should be the focus of future research.  相似文献

Three formulations of the systemic fungicide metalaxyl were tested in various seed treatments for the control of pearl millet downy mildew in three field experiments with downy mildew-susceptible pearl millet hybrid NHB-3. Uniform, high levels of sporangial inoculum of the causal fungus, Sclerospora graminicola, were provided throughout the growth of the test crops from inoculated infector rows of NHB-3, planted earlier between the test plots. Significant reductions in downy mildew were obtained with all fungicide treatments. Best control was obtained when seed was soaked in a 0.5% aqueous solution of a liquid formulation (mean infection index of 9.8% compared with 94.8% in the untreated check). The degree of control with the wettable powder formulations was directly related to fungicide dosage, and there were no significant effects of application method. Simple dusting of seed at 2 g a.i./kg, a rapid and simple operation requiring small quantities of fungicide and no special application equipment, gave a high level of control (infection index of 12.6% compared with 78.9% in the untreated check). In two experiments grain yields from all the treated plots were significantly greater than from the untreated plots (means of 1234 and 1534 kg/ha for treated plots compared with 485 and 743 kg/ha, respectively), and in the third, the treatment with the least downy mildew gave significantly more grain than the untreated check (1228 compared with 727 kg/ha).  相似文献

Mixtures of methyl esters of fatty acids (‘Off-Shoot O’) and mixtures of fatty alcohols (‘Off-Shoot T’), applied during the late autumn (November), eradicated apple powdery mildew (caused by Podosphaera leucotricha) from infected buds. Applications in the spring at bud-burst were less effective. The autumn sprays caused little damage to the cultivars Bramley's Seedling, Cox's Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious but on Worcester Pearmain 50% of the buds were killed by a 5% Off-Shoot O spray. The bud-burst sprays were damaging and reduced yield on the Cox and Bramley trees. A 5% a.i. mixture of nonanol/lissapol applied to a range of commercial cultivars was effective in eradicating powdery mildew but was more phytotoxic than the Off-Shoot compounds. Spraying Cox trees later in the winter failed to reduce the damage. Eradication of the overwintering stage of the disease resulted in low spore concentrations during the following spring and early summer, enabling some economies to be made in the summer mildew fungicide programme.  相似文献

Disulfoton or phorate granules or demeton-S-methyl, menazon and vamidothion sprays, applied once in early June as preventive treatments before heavy aphid colonies developed, gave good control of Aphis fabae Scop, on field beans. Phosalone gave relatively poor results and DDT was ineffective. Applications in June to crops sown in February and early March were made with minimal wheel damage to the crop and are known to be less harmful to bees than sprays at flowering time. Eradicant treatments with demeton-S-methyl and dimethoate sprays or with disulfoton or phorate granules on heavily infested plants during flowering were also effective, but menazon was less satisfactory. These eradicant sprays are likely to be harmful to bees, and wheel damage in late June reduced yield by 1–2 cwt/acre (125–250 kg/ha). Peak populations of 3000 aphids/plant in early July reduced yield by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) in one trial.  相似文献

Omethoate, formothion, monocrotophos and carbaryl were the most effective of a number of insecticides evaluated as foliar sprays for the control of Empoasca lybica on eggplant. The duration of insecticidal activity was about 20 days, three sprays being required during the season. Disulfoton, carbofuran and terbufos granules applied to the soil at the rate of 0.1 g a.i./plant c. 1 month after transplanting gave control of jassid throughout the season and a significant yield response.  相似文献

Field experiments on the effect of residues of aldrin and dieldrin in the soil on the beetle predators of the cabbage root fly, showed that populations of adult carabid and staphylinid predators were altered by aldrin/dieldrin residues at concentrations of 0.06 p.p.m. and above. The lower insecticidal concentrations were aged residues which had become intimately mixed with the soil. Although the residues reduced the numbers of trapped Aleochara spp., concentrations below 0.5 p.p.m. increased the numbers of Bembidion lampros, probably because their movement was stimulated by the insecticide. Harpalus spp. and Feronia spp. were unaffected by residues below the concentration toxic to cabbage root-fly eggs and larvae. The reductions of the predators implied by the trapping records increased the survival of the cabbage root-fly eggs and larvae, thus leading to augmented damage to cauliflowers, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, which resulted in reductions in yield of up to 70%. Larval and pupal parasitism by Aleochara spp. and Idiomorpha rapae were also reduced by the insecticide residues, although concentrations of 0.2 p.p.m. and above were required to decrease parasitism by I. rapae.  相似文献
