Among microtine rodents, reaction to chemical cues from conspecifics is assumed to reflect social and spatial relationships. Generally, strong attraction of particular odours correlates with non‐aggressive behaviour and high spatial tolerance towards odour donors, whereas weak attraction correlates with greater levels of aggression and spatial segregation. In the present study, we examined whether winter odour preferences of the snow vole Chionomys nivalis, a rock‐dwelling microtine principally found at high‐mountainous regions, differ from that of other vole species, owing to their different social organization during overwintering periods. The social structure of C. nivalis over the winter period is relatively unusual among vole species in that they become nomadic and solitary. In odour choice trials under laboratory conditions, we found that both males and females avoided zones with conspecific odours of both sexes in comparison with unscented control zones or own odours. These results are consistent with the elevated levels of intraspecific aggression and spatial isolation of C. nivalis during overwintering periods. Furthermore, scent‐elicited self‐grooming increased when their own odour was offered against conspecific cues. This, in combination with an active avoidance of conspecific odours, might functionally contribute to minimize direct confrontations between solitary individuals, thereby reducing the risks of aggressive encounters during overwintering periods.

Crickets appear to rely less upon olfactory communication than do their non-acoustical relatives, but males and females of house (Acheta) and field (Gryllus) crickets can determine sex by odour, and males can distinguish odours of conspecific and heterospecific females. In the presence of female odours, female-deprived males groom more vigorously and are more aggressive.

Biological odours that convey cues regarding individual identity can provide valuable information mediating many aspects of mammalian social relationships such us dominance hierarchies, group memberships, territorial and mating activities. The ability of the subterranean rodent, tuco‐tuco (Ctenomys talarum), to discriminate between soiled shavings, urine and faeces from different individuals was investigated using the habituation–discrimination paradigm. Discrimination by both males and females was tested using scents obtained from same‐ and opposite‐sex individuals. Each test subject was habituated for three consecutive days to odour samples from the same individual; on the fourth day a scent from a novel individual was provided. For all odour sources, animals spent significantly less time investigating the habituation scent over successive trials, indicating that animals perceived the stimulus as familiar. For all stimuli, test subjects spent more time investigating the novel odour, rather than the familiar one. Animals spent more time investigating soiled shavings than urine or faeces. Both males and females discriminated novel from familiar odours in shavings and urine regardless of the gender of the odour donors. In contrast, test animals discriminated between familiar and novel odours in feces only when the fecal donors were of different sex from subjects. Possible territorial and reproductive functions of individual scent discrimination are discussed.

Sex recognition is based on colour signals in many species of lizards. However, olfactory stimuli are also clearly involved, and many species might rely more on chemoreception. We aimed to examine whether colour pattern or odours, or both, are used in sex recognition and which cues elicit courtship of females by males of the lizard Podarcis hispanica . We experimentally manipulated the coloration and odour of female P. hispanica , thereby creating groups with all combinations between coloration and odour of males and females. Using data from staged encounters, we compared the responses of resident males to manipulated and unmanipulated individuals (males and females). Responding males reacted significantly more aggressively to female intruders with male odours, independently of their coloration. Nevertheless, coloration seemed to be important in long-distance sex recognition since, in the first minutes, females painted as females received a lower number of aggressive responses. Both colour and odour were important in eliciting male courtship. However, females painted as females and with female odours were preferentially courted. Comparisons with unmanipulated male and female intruders agreed with these expectations. Therefore, at close range, odoriferous cues seem to be more important than colour patterns in sex recognition, but female coloration is also useful at long range to deter the aggressive response of males and to elicit courtship in conjunction with odours.

The relative contribution of genetic and environmental components to the colony-specific recognition odour was assessed for the ant Rhytidoponera confusa, using an aggression assay. Colonies maintained in the laboratory for 6 months were significantly less aggressive to each other than they were to colonies that had been collected from the field within the previous 48 h. Colonies tested 12–24 h after collection from the field showed significantly more aggression against laboratory ants than did the same colonies after they had been kept in the laboratory for 4–5 weeks. Both results indicate that environmental odours can contribute to the colony odour. Nestmates supplied with different diets and nest materials for 4–5 weeks were attacked more than the controls. Though slight, the increase in aggression was significant. This suggests that environmental odours, though significant when odour differences are extreme enough, may nevertheless be less important than genetic odours in nature. This and other studies suggest this pattern may be common in social insects generally.

This study demonstrates that ferrets can use variations in odours from anal sac secretions as a communication system. Odour preference tests showed that ferrets can discriminate between male and female ferret anal sac odours, between strange and familiar, familiar and their own, and fresh and 1-day-old odours. They did not discriminate between fresh and 2-h-old odours, nor did male ferrets discriminate between the odours of oestrous and anoestrous females. Ferrets were more attracted to the odours of the opposite sex than to those of their own sex. When faced by an opponent, male ferrets were more aggressive in the presence of their own rather than their opponent's odour, and less aggressive with their opponent's odour than with that of a known, dominant animal's odour. These results are consistent with both a sex attraction role and a territorial defence role for anal sac odours. A scent-matching mechanism for territorial defence is supported, although a neighbour-neighbour recognition/avoidance mechanism cannot be rejected. Gas chromatography revealed sexually and individually distinct profiles of volatile compounds in anal sac extracts, but no consistent seasonal trends. Females had high concentrations of 2,3-dimethylthietane and/or 3,4-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolane. Males usually had high concentrations of indole. 2-Propylthietane was an important constituent in most individuals. These differences in concentration were significant and could provide an olfactory recognition system of sex and individual identity.

Previous research, using habituation techniques with multiple rodent species as subjects, has demonstrated (from kin to across species) the greater perceptual similarity in the qualities of individual odours of more closely genetically related individuals ('odour–genes covariance', abbreviated 'OGC'). This predictable relationship between individual genotypes and individual odours has only been assessed in rodents in which the genetic similarities and dissimilarities are known either through laboratory breeding or by selecting odour donors from different populations or species. To study OGC within a natural population of rodents, we genotyped Spalax galili blind mole rats using ten microsatellite markers, and conducted pairwise genetic distance comparisons to estimate genetic similarity and to calculate the relatedness coefficient between pairs of individuals. We then used habituation-generalization techniques to assess whether perceived odour similarities covaried with the genetic similarities we had identified. Indeed, animals treated odours from genetically closer donors as more similar than odours from less genetically similar donors. The results suggest an accurate and subtle ability to resolve genetically determined odour distinctions among familially unrelated animals within a population. Graded differential responses to conspecific odours based on degrees of similarity between other individuals' odours and one's own have been demonstrated in kinship and species discriminations and preferences. The evidence presented here provides the basis for hypothesizing a similar process that could promote optimal outbreeding and inclusive fitness within populations of conspecifics. The evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 483–490.

Studies on subjective body odour ratings suggest that humans exhibit preferences for human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-dissimilar persons. However, with regard to the extreme polymorphism of the HLA gene loci, the behavioural impact of the proposed HLA-related attracting signals seems to be minimal. Furthermore, the role of HLA-related chemosignals in same- and opposite-sex relations in humans has not been specified so far. Here, we investigate subjective preferences and brain evoked responses to body odours in males and females as a function of HLA similarity between odour donor and smeller. We show that pre-attentive processing of body odours of HLA-similar donors is faster and that late evaluative processing of these chemosignals activates more neuronal resources than the processing of body odours of HLA-dissimilar donors. In same-sex smelling conditions, HLA-associated brain responses show a different local distribution in male (frontal) and female subjects (parietal). The electrophysiological results are supported by significant correlations between the odour ratings and the amplitudes of the brain potentials. We conclude that odours of HLA-similar persons function as important social warning signals in inter- and intrasexual human relations. Such HLA-related chemosignals may contribute to female and male mate choice as well as to male competitive behaviour.

Previous research using habituation techniques has demonstrated that greater genetic similarity between two individuals is associated with more similarity in the qualities of their individual odours ('odour-genes eovariance'). We assessed odour similarities across species in two pairs of genetically close species within the Mus species complex (M. musculus and M. domesticus; M. spicilegus and M. macedonicus). Subjects treated odours within each species pair as similar compared with an odour from the other species pair. Subjects also treated odours of M. spicilegus males from the same population as similar compared with the odour of M. spicilegus males from a different population. This confirms odour-genes eovariance across species and within populations and also supports previous findings that odour similarities are more salient than specific odour markers. When adult males were presented with odours of females from two different heterospecific species, subjects spent more time investigating the odour from his own species pair than the other species pair, indicating greater interest in the odour of the closer heterospecific and demonstrating that odour-genes eovariance is reflected in behavioural responses to odours. Implications of odour-genes eovariance as a basis for identifying degrees of genetic relatedness of unfamiliar individuals through similarities in individual odours are discussed.

Two models have been proposed for the transfer of genetically determined colony odour pheromones in social insects. The ‘Gestalt’ model suggests a complete transfer of pheromones amongst all nestmates whereas the ‘Individualistic’ model suggests no significant odour transfer with nestmates bearing individually distinct odours. In experiments with the ant Rhytidoponera confusa, colonies showed significantly more aggression (12% aggression) towards nestmates that had been kept in cages with non-nestmates than they did to nestmate controls (0% aggression). Colonies also showed significantly less aggression against non-nestmates that had been kept with nestmates in a separate cage (84% aggression) than they did to non-nestmate controls (100% aggression). A second experiment indicated that workers can absorb colony-specific odours from the nest materials of other colonies. However, whilst both experiments indicated a partial Gestalt component to the colony odour (ca. 28%), the Individualistic component seemed to be more important (ca. 72%).

Previous studies in animals and humans show that genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence individual odours and that females often prefer odour of MHC-dissimilar males, perhaps to increase offspring heterozygosity or reduce inbreeding. Women using oral hormonal contraceptives have been reported to have the opposite preference, raising the possibility that oral contraceptives alter female preference towards MHC similarity, with possible fertility costs. Here we test directly whether contraceptive pill use alters odour preferences using a longitudinal design in which women were tested before and after initiating pill use; a control group of non-users were tested with a comparable interval between test sessions. In contrast to some previous studies, there was no significant difference in ratings between odours of MHC-dissimilar and MHC-similar men among women during the follicular cycle phase. However, single women preferred odours of MHC-similar men, while women in relationships preferred odours of MHC-dissimilar men, a result consistent with studies in other species, suggesting that paired females may seek to improve offspring quality through extra-pair partnerships. Across tests, we found a significant preference shift towards MHC similarity associated with pill use, which was not evident in the control group. If odour plays a role in human mate choice, our results suggest that contraceptive pill use could disrupt disassortative mate preferences.

We investigated recognition and identification of wine-relevant odours as a function of domain-specific expertise. Eleven wine experts and 11 wine novices participated in tasks measuring olfactory threshold, odour recognition, odour identification, and consistency of odour naming. Twenty-four wine-relevant odorants were sampled orthonasally by each participant in the semantic (identification; consistency of naming) and episodic (recognition) memory tasks. Results showed superior olfactory recognition by expert wine judges, despite their olfactory sensitivity and bias measures being similar to those of novices. Contrary to predictions based on reports of an association between odour memory and semantic processing, wine experts did not perform better than novices on the verbal memory tasks. Further, ability to recognize odours and ability to name odours were not positively correlated, although the novices' data showed a trend in this direction. The results imply that the source of superior odour recognition in wine experts was not enhanced semantic memory and linguistic capabilities for wine-relevant odours. One interpretation of the data is that wine experts were less susceptible than wine novices to verbal overshadowing. When forced to identify the odorants, experts' superior perceptual skills protected them from verbal interference, whereas novices' generated verbal representations of the odours were emphasized at the expense of the odorant itself. This has implications for training in wine-evaluation skills.

Animal foraging and reproductive behaviour is influenced by other simultaneous demands such as predator avoidance. The trade-offs between these demands may depend on sex or mating experience. This study demonstrates that the olfactory-mediated foraging and mate-seeking behaviours in the silver Y moths, Autographa gamma , are affected by auditory cues mimicking their bat predators. Both males and females changed their foraging behaviour under simulated predation risk. Fewer moths reached the odour source following sound stimulation and the time to find the odour source increased by up to 250%. However, there were no significant differences between male and female ability to reach the plant odour source or the duration of the flight towards the source when stimulated with ultrasound. Hence females are not more cautious than males when observed in the same behavioural context. Risk-taking in males was independent of whether they were flying toward a flower odour or sex pheromones having equal attractive value. This indicates that the trade-off between olfactory and acoustic cues is independent the type of odour. Mated females were not as strongly affected by sound as non-mated, indicating that flower odours have a higher adaptive value for mated females, suggesting that some processes following mating experience influence the trade-off between flower odours and simulated bat sounds.

Plant diversity is known to affect success of host location by pest insects, but its effect on olfactory orientation of non-pest insect species has hardly been addressed. First, we tested in laboratory experiments the hypothesis that non-host plants, which increase odour complexity in habitats, affect the host location ability of herbivores and parasitoids. Furthermore, we recorded field data of plant diversity in addition to herbivore and parasitoid abundance at 77 grassland sites in three different regions in Germany in order to elucidate whether our laboratory results reflect the field situation. As a model system we used the herb Plantago lanceolata, the herbivorous weevil Mecinus pascuorum, and its larval parasitoid Mesopolobus incultus. The laboratory bioassays revealed that both the herbivorous weevil and its larval parasitoid can locate their host plant and host via olfactory cues even in the presence of non-host odour. In a newly established two-circle olfactometer, the weeviĺs capability to detect host plant odour was not affected by odours from non-host plants. However, addition of non-host plant odours to host plant odour enhanced the weeviĺs foraging activity. The parasitoid was attracted by a combination of host plant and host volatiles in both the absence and presence of non-host plant volatiles in a Y-tube olfactometer. In dual choice tests the parasitoid preferred the blend of host plant and host volatiles over its combination with non-host plant volatiles. In the field, no indication was found that high plant diversity disturbs host (plant) location by the weevil and its parasitoid. In contrast, plant diversity was positively correlated with weevil abundance, whereas parasitoid abundance was independent of plant diversity. Therefore, we conclude that weevils and parasitoids showed the sensory capacity to successfully cope with complex vegetation odours when searching for hosts.

There is growing evidence of correlated behaviours across time, situations and/or contexts (behavioural syndromes) in animals, and their link with fitness makes these studies mandatory to understanding the species’ behavioural and evolutionary ecology. Whereas the role of the social environment on behavioural syndromes is receiving increasing attention, experimental studies testing whether environmental fluctuations govern sex-dependent behavioural syndromes are scarce. I performed an experiment to test for the existence of sex differences in activity syndromes through a changing social environment. Males and females of Bosca’s newt (Lissotriton boscai) were faced with three social situations perceived through chemical cues (own odour, no odour and same-sex conspecific odours) to measure their activity levels. Comparisons of the activity levels showed that both males and females discriminated the odourless stimuli from newt odour (either their own or the conspecific stimuli). Whereas activity levels were positively correlated between their own and the odourless stimuli in both sexes, the association between the odourless and conspecific stimuli was positive in males but decoupled in females. This is the first experimental evidence of sex differences in activity syndromes of wild-caught animals in response to social changes.

The present study showed that parasites influence both the responses of uninfected females to males and the responses of female hosts to infected males. In female laboratory mice one of the consequences of exposure to the olfactory cues associated with an infected male was a reduction of the reactivity to a thermal surface, i.e. pain inhibition or analgaesia. Uninfected oestrous and non-oestrous female mice displayed marked analgaesic responses after exposure to the odours of males infected with either the enteric single-host nematode parasite, Heligmosomoides polygyrus, or the protozoan parasite, Eimeria vermiformis. The uninfected oestrous females distinguished between infected and physically stressed males, displaying a greater analgaesic response to the odours of infected males. These analgaesic responses and their anxiety/ fearfulness-associated behavioural correlates could elicit either a reduced interest in, or avoidance of, parasitized males by females. Oestrous female mice infected with H. polygyrus displayed a reduced analgaesic response to the odours of the infected males and differentially responded to the odours of males infected with either the same (H. polygyrus) or a different parasite (E. vermiformis). An exposure time of 1 min elicited minimal responses to the odours of males infected with the same parasite, H. polygyrus, and an attenuated, though significant, non-opioid peptide-mediated analgaesic response to males infected with E. vermiformis. An exposure time of 30 min elicited similar markedly reduced endogenous opioid peptide-mediated analgaesic responses to the odours of both of the categories of infected males. The responses to the odours of a stressed male were, however, unaffected by the parasitic infection. The reduced analgaesic responses of the parasitized females to the odours of infected males may involve either enhanced odour familiarity and responses to group odour templates and/or neuromodulatory shifts resulting in reduced fearfulness and potentially greater interest in the infected males.

Parasites can affect mate choice, with females preferentially selecting parasite-free males. Prior exposure to, or experience with, males has also been suggested to influence mate responses. Here, we examined the effects of an immediate, brief (1 or 15 min) pre-exposure to the urinary and associated odours of either an uninfected male house mouse,Mus domesticus , or a male infected with the natural murine nematode parasite, Heligomosomoides polygyrus, on the subsequent responses of female mice to the odours of infected and uninfected males. Using an odour preference test we found that females displayed a marked overall preference for the odours of uninfected males. Pre-exposure to the odours of a parasitized male decreased female preference for nonparasitized males and increased female preference for parasitized males. This ‘prior male’ effect was evident for both the total odour preference and initial odour choice. Females pre-exposed to the odour of a parasitized male displayed decreased choosiness and made no particular initial choice of a male, while still maintaining an overall preference for the odours of uninfected males. These shifts in initial choice and odour preference were not directly associated with either female stress responses or stress-related odour cues of the males. Our findings show that female mice can distinguish between parasitized and nonparasitized males on the basis of odour and suggest that a brief exposure to the odours of infected males influences females' immediate odour preferences, and their subsequent preference for and choice of males. This rapid, infection-associated ‘prior male’ effect may contribute to the reported variations in female mate preference and choice. ABSTRACT. In fourteen releases, most female D.radicum (L.) (Diptera, Anthomyiidae) flew upwind or at an angle to it of less than 77° regardless of the presence of host-plant odour. Females ready to lay eggs flew upwind without prior stimulation by odours from either a host crop or a trap releasing up to 3 ml/day of the attractant allylisothiocyanate. Upwind flight was more pronounced in flies from a diapause than from a continuous, non-diapause culture. Males from the non-diapause culture dispersed upwind and downwind in more or less equal numbers; old males flew mainly downwind. But, like the females, most males from the diapause culture flew upwind. Long-distance, odour-modulated anemotaxis did not appear to be used to locate distant host crops by either sex. It is concluded that the distances of insect orientation to plant odours recorded to date are only of intermediate range, and that long-range orientation to the odours of a host-plant still has to be proven. It is suggested that host-plant volatiles are involved not only in the final stage of host location but also in the first, and probably most important stage of host selection whilst the insect is still in flight.
