A recent example is the debate on the possible introduction of genetically modified crops into the United Kingdom. The concept of death has evolved as technology has progressed. This has forced medicine and society to redefine its ancient cardiorespiratory centred diagnosis to a neurocentric diagnosis of death. The apparent consensus about the definition of death has not yet appeased all controversy. Ethical, moral and religious concerns continue to surface and include a prevailing malaise about possible expansions of the definition of death to encompass the vegetative state or about the feared bias of formulating criteria so as to facilitate organ transplantation.  相似文献

In this Perspective article, I consider ways in which the contemporary arts and sciences can interact with each other, and I outline the current opportunities for funding in the United Kingdom. I examine the view that, in an art-science collaboration, it is the artist who benefits most, and I cautiously suggest that this is an oversimplification. Evidence from interviews with scientists who have been involved in these collaborations shows that artistic experience and skills are of value in the scientific research process.  相似文献

Consanguineous marriage is customary in many societies, but leads to an increased birth prevalence of infants with severe recessive disorders. It is therefore often proposed that consanguineous marriage should be discouraged on medical grounds. However, several expert groups have pointed out that this proposal is inconsistent with the ethical principles of genetic counselling, overlooks the social importance of consanguineous marriage and is ineffective. Instead, they suggest that the custom increases the possibilities for effective genetic counselling, and recommend a concerted effort to identify families at increased risk, and to provide them with risk information and carrier testing when feasible.  相似文献

Nearly 4 years after launching the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP), the rice genome sequence is almost completed. This is the second plant genome after Arabidopsis thaliana and one expect that it is more representative of other cereal genomes. Indeed, no more than 4 sequences have been independently reported as a result of a tough competition between economy, politics and media. The efficiency and impact of this way of managing a large scale project is questionable. This paper reports the various phases in sequencing rice genome as well as what we start to learn.  相似文献

In 2005, the economic gap between developing and developed countries is bigger than ever, and this has consequences for public health. So, to sustain education and research in the most resource-constrained regions, it is necessary to promote local teaching of the immunology of infectious diseases. This Perspective article reviews the use and expected efficiency of current Internet-based tools for higher education in the biomedical sciences in developing countries. We also discuss other approaches to improve access to updated training in immunology for students in the poorest countries.  相似文献

In February 1975, in Pacific Grove, California, the Asilomar Conference took place, sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and convened by the Academy's Committee on Recombinant DNA Molecules, of which Paul Berg was the Chairman. This conference recommended guidelines for recombinant DNA research, and the history of subsequent sets of guidelines formed the major theme of six articles that appeared in Vol. 1 of BioEssays, authored by Dewitt Stetten, Jr, with the collaboration of William Gartland and Bernard Talbot and entitled ‘The Road to Asilomar: Reminiscences of the Recombinant DNA Story’.1 The U.S. National Research Council recently commissioned for its News Report (volume XXXV, March 1985, 1A–16A) a retrospective article on Asilomar, written by Susan Walton.
